Collaboration is the Name of The Game in Workforce Ask almost any business what is the main issue impeding business growth and almost all will say finding and retaining workforce. In these economic times just finding reliable and competent entry level staff is a trial.

• MentorStark.org

Industry sector partnerships are a new way for our community to coordinate workforce issues. These partnerships are employer led and therefore the priorities and goals are established by the employer partnerships.

• The Stark Education Partnership

The collaboration piece is through the efforts of employers working together and through the support of the many established organizations that are part of the talent pipeline. For instance, addressing the immediate Stark County manufacturing employer needs to fill the hundreds of vacant entry level production opportunities depends on intentional communication and coordination with programs with the following: • Ohio Means Jobs • the high school career tech programs • Every high school Business Advisory Council • communication with the 17 school superintendents, high school principals and counselors • The higher education colleges and universities serving Stark County

• Strengthening Stark • The Stark County Educational Service Center

• Veteran organizations • Organizations serving formerly incarcerated • Faith based organizations • Minority organizations Each organization has a separate focus, but all converge with the goal of getting people employed in viable career pathways. The manufacturing employers hope to establish systems that will sustain a robust manufacturing talent pipeline. At this time, the Chamber along with SEDB and MAGNET is taking the lead to help the manufacturing employers execute the marketing, communication and collaboration with these organizations. As noted, collaboration is the name of the game in workforce development. By: Barbara Hammontree Bennett, PE, PS, LEED-AP Vice President of Education and Workforce

How to Hire Successfully As your business grows, so too will your need to add staff. Hiring is a huge investment and costly to get wrong. Before making your next hire, here are three hiring tips from SCORE CEO Bridget Weston. At some point along the way, small business owners realize that they can’t do it all themselves and still do it all well. Running a business is a challenging undertaking, and the more your business grows, the more you’re going to need to rely on a trusted set of employees to maintain a quality product or service. Hiring, however, introduces a new variable to running a business, especially when you’re used to running a company of one. Hiring the right talent comes down to honestly assessing the skills and talents your business needs most, being diligent and having patience in your search. There’s a lot at stake. In its latest estimate, the U.S. Department of Labor has reported the estimated cost of a bad hire is about 30-percent of an employee’s annual compensation. Needless to say, most small businesses can’t afford to make the wrong hiring decision. Making smart hiring decisions is less of a science than an art. Ms. Weston recommends that small business owners focus on refining the three primary areas of their hiring process to find the best candidates.

400 South Main St. North Canton, Ohio 44720

Clarify the Role. Make the position you’re hiring crystal clear to potential applicants so you can attract qualified candidates and avoid having to weed through irrelevant resumes. Write a detailed job description that identifies responsibilities and required skills and expertise. The more accurate your description, the more effective you’ll be at attracting the right talent right off the bat. Find Qualified Applicants. Half the battle of hiring the best talent is finding the best talent. Posting a job description to a job board is a good start, but to find great talent, do some work to put the opportunity into the right hands. Leverage your network of professionals and ask who they may know who could be a good fit. Use social media platforms, particularly LinkedIn, and do some homework to uncover other potential candidates. More and more people are finding jobs via social media and it’s now a hiring pool that employers can’t ignore.

Even if you’re a sole proprietor, don’t make hiring decisions in a vacuum. Consult trusted industry partners or mentors as you go through the hiring process and get additional insight to round out your thinking. One such way to make the right hiring choice: Use the guidance of a SCORE mentor. Your SCORE mentor will become familiar with your business and help you through your hiring from start to finish so you hire the best talent for your business. You can reach Canton Region SCORE chapter at cantonscore@gmail.com or 330.880.4004. Check out our upcoming webinars at https://canton.score.org/content/takeworkshop-143

Choose the Best Employee. The key here is taking your time. Review resumes and speak with top candidates. It may take two or three rounds of interviews to get a solid understanding of which candidates are best for the job. When interviewing, don’t undervalue the softer attributes that aren’t as easy to identify on a resume, like cultural fit and the candidate’s ability to communicate clearly with clients or customers. Finally, check references. They

can help you learn more about how the candidate performed in past roles and whether they’d make a good fit within your organization.

What do you see as valuable opportunities for YPs in Stark County when it comes to career opportunities, cultural access, leadership or community involvement opportunities? Just continuing to have access opportunities and the ability to connect and learn. These being available through varying organizations and lines of work is key, and also making sure all of our agencies are talking to each other - across non-profit, private sector, governmental, corporate, etc.

Name: Julia Abiecunas

What would attract more YPs to Stark County? Continuing to grow and diversify, and add to the tourism scene.

SHAPE THE FUTURE OF CANTON/STARK COUNTY! EACH MONTH, WE’LL INTRODUCE YOU TO A YP WHO IS LIVING OR WORKING, BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY, THRIVING IN

Occupation/Title/Place of work: Chief Executive Officer, JRC Age: 37 Why are you interested in Stark County’s Young Professionals initiative? Connecting, collaborating, and continuously learning. These three items are important in my philosophy for how I approach my professional and personal growth, and all provided through this initiative.

What do you do in the evenings or on the weekends for fun in Stark County or NE Ohio? First Friday, eating at many of the great restaurants, Maize Valley, Gervasi, visiting friends and family I have here - there is lots of things to do outside as well! Could you see yourself spending your lifetime in Stark County and if not, what would cause you to leave? Yes, I would love to stay here!

What would you share to encourage other people to join? Besides the reasons I am interested and participating, YP is also always ahead of the curve with coming up new ideas, so opportunities are relevant, meaningful, and current - which is a huge benefit. Did you grow up in Stark? If so, where? If not, where did you move from and why? I went to Lake and resided in Stark County. I currently live outside of Stark, but work here. Why do you stay in Stark County, from both a personal and professional point of view? I am new to working in Stark County, but absolutely love it. I have been welcomed into the area and see a lot of synergy and collaboration in the partner agencies I am working with. I have also been intrigued to see how much the county has grown from years ago when I lived here. From a personal point of view, there is so much more to do now and the county is rapidly growing and adding as we speak. What do you like MOST about Stark County? I feel it is a growing area, but remains a welcoming area and people focused. It is great to feel you are a part of positive change and expansion, but also still feel connected to the roots of community.

What would you change about Stark County if you could? I think just making sure Stark County continues to market itself, and bring external people in. I don’t know if we are always doing this to the highest ability we could be doing so.
