Outgoing Message from 2013 Board of Directors Chairman Karen Brenneman: “Not Goodbye” I have entitled this a “not goodbye” message because I am confident I will never say goodbye to the Canton Chamber and its members. Once this organization gets into your blood and you see the impact of the work that Denny Saunier and his staff have on this community, you want to always be a part of its success. My mother told me in my teenage years not to wish my time away because as you get older time goes faster. As a teenager with some logic skills, I thought she was crazy. Turns out, as usual, she knew exactly what she was talking about. I must be “older” now because I can hardly believe that 12 months have passed this quickly. I am very proud of all the work the Chamber was able to provide to its membership during 2013, and I believe that the best is yet to come! (continued on page 12)

Huntington Bank to Present “The Utica Capital Series” in 2014 by David Kaminski, Director of Energy and Public Affairs

Join us for our first Oil & Gas event of 2014:

Vice Chairman - Brian Belden The Belden Brick Company

Stir After Hours networking event at Bender’s Tavern Presented by Huntington Bank

The Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce is beginning its third year of programming to encourage the oil and gas economy here in the Utica Capital. We are moving forward in 2014 with a strong partner at our side. We are pleased to announce plans for four energy events in 2014 to be known as “The Utica Capital Series Presented by Huntington Bank.” Huntington’s Greater Akron-Canton Region, under the leadership of President William Shivers, approached the Chamber and offered assistance in our oil and gas business development program this year. With Huntington as the presenting sponsor for each event, we open the series with a business after-hours networking event on Jan. 23 at Benders Tavern. Watch for details in an upcoming membership e-mail and other marketing messages. The series will continue with a business luncheon featuring an energy speaker in March, a business development seminar in May and a meeting with a broader energy theme in August. As we develop the details of these programs, we will announce those details to members and other followers of our energy programs in the community, in other locations throughout Ohio and in neighboring states. With Huntington’s support, we have created a program of events at specific times throughout the year, which other potential sponsors and members can anticipate. Through the first two years of our oil and gas business development work, we offered seminars as opportunities arose. We think that in this third year you should expect a specific work plan, and we are happy to offer it.

Our goal from the outset in early 2012 has been to help our members and friends understand what is going on in Utica Shale oil and gas exploration and see where business growth opportunities lie. The Utica Capital Series Presented by Huntington Bank will help us stay true to that goal.

Corporate Secretary - Steven J. Katz Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce

We thank our members and business friends who helped us close 2013 with an oil and gas business luncheon on Dec. 9 that featured Ohio Department of Natural Resources Director James Zehringer and ODNR’s chief oil and gas regulator, Rick Simmers. Guests at the luncheon heard details of ODNR’s program of expanding its inspection and regulation team to keep up with the accelerating pace of exploration in the Utica. In two years, ODNR has tripled the size of its oil and gas regulatory staff. It now numbers 110 people, with plans to add another 45 people. As you know if you follow the oil and gas industry, the Ohio Department of Natural Resource is the state agency that applies and enforces uniform regulations for oil and gas exploration throughout the state. That uniformity is a great economic development asset for Ohio because it means that oil and gas exploration companies can operate within a predictable regulatory environment anywhere in the Buckeye State. Our thanks to Director Zehringer and his staff for bringing the department’s message to Canton. Thanks also to Malone University, which provided a fine venue for the meeting.

CHAIRMEN LET TER Chairman letter, continued ... I am happy to report that many individuals have worked very hard to develop a strategic plan for the Chamber. This plan will serve as our guidance for the next three to five years. As a member you should know that the strategic planning professional we had guide us through the process expressed that the Canton Regional Chamber is the most sophisticated and community-involved chamber that he has ever seen. An organization such as this thrives only if it has three things: leadership, strategy and execution. Our Chamber has great leaders, starting with the talents of Denny and extending to next year’s chairman of the board, Phil Fracassa, as well as the entire board. Our goals have now been set and approved by all of you in the community through the strategic plan. The execution will be the responsibility of the very capable and proven chamber staff as they work with community volunteers and partners. I don’t know how to properly express the pride that I have and how fortunate I have been to be a part of such a decisive year. To all my “blood” brothers and sisters in this community, thank you for allowing me to see the Canton Regional Chamber, a top-notch asset in our business community, from a wonderful vantage point.

Dr. Shreffler is a graduate of the 18th Class of Leadership Stark County’s Signature Program which is a year-long look at the many facets of Stark County’s economy, education, social services, community assets, legal and government systems, and the arts. Graduates are encouraged to get involved in one of these areas to ensure Stark County’s future success. Dr. Shreffler, describe your leadership style: Surround yourself with good people and then be a mentor to them. Always be flexible, fair and use those around you to help problem-solve. Stand by people, but help them learn from mistakes. Why did you decide to participate in Leadership Stark County? The program came highly recommended by a colleague. How has your experience in the program affected your service and leadership roles in the community? The Signature Program helped me to collaborate with those who are in the private sector and look at the business aspects of education. Even though schools are very different from businesses, there are similarities. It also helped me connect with people in the community who were part of non-profits or groups with interests similar to mine. It made me understand that I needed to be more involved in the greater community, In your career, how have you used what you learned during the Leadership program? There are still people from my class in the private sector that I collaborate with on issues, especially issues that affect our community. In addition, the program helped me to understand how diverse Stark County really is in many aspects. It has helped me to connect people I serve to organizations that can help them. Provide an example of how your Signature Class training has transferred into your workplace? I have used the “shoe box” exercise that we did at our Cultural Diversity Day session many times! Seriously, the training has made me become much more involved in non-profits in the community and it helped me to know how to encourage others to connect with non-profits as well.

in our state and in our nation, and we as a community of leaders need to focus on solutions to issues and problems. • Ohio’s biggest issue is loss of population. We need to be open minded about how we can keep and attract people from all walks of life. • We need to make sure we are ready to take care of the many baby boomers who are rapidly becoming senior citizens. What nonprofit organizations do you serve and in what capacity? I am the co-founder and President of the Board of ORMACO (Ohio Regional Music Arts and Cultural Outreach) and on the board of the YMCA of Canal Fulton. I am past president of the Stark County Italian American Foundation and currently chair a committee. What is your most significant memory from your Leadership Stark County experience? The Opening Retreat - it was absolutely the best way to begin. I felt that it was perfectly structured with different activities and with down-time to think and to really get to know others in the class. I’m still friends with the people I played cards with on the night of the retreat almost 10 years ago! What would you say to someone considering applying to the Signature Program? I would say you absolutely need to do it, but if you are going to do it, you need to commit to it 100%. You can’t get the full benefits of the program if you think you are going to select only parts of it. How have you remained involved in Leadership Stark County since your graduation? I have been on the Education Day Committee since I participated in the program. I co-chaired Education Day for about 6 years. Is there anything else you would like to add? Through working with non-profits and then having a chance to work in another county for a short time, I have had the opportunity to see other “Leadership” programs at work. I think they are all good, but I think ours is the best. I truly believe that the essence of the success of the program in Stark County is that the program is set up to accept and recognize a largely diverse group of people. This program has made many realize that sometimes our differences can be the very thing that ultimately connects us and makes us grow stronger as a community of leaders.

What issues do you think future leaders should focus on? • Education—Education in Ohio is in serious trouble. If we want to keep our best and brightest in Stark County, every citizen needs to try to understand what is happening with education

YSTARK! PROFILE Editor’s note: In keeping with the ystark!’s mission – to attract and retain talented young people in Stark County – ACTION will feature a monthly profile of an individual who represents the group (ages 20-40) that ystark! is targeting. Name: Drew Pelger Age: 28 Occupation/Title/Place of work: Insurance Sales / Account Executive / The Pelger Agency Why are you interested Canton’s Young Professionals initiative? The current members of ystark! are the future leaders of Canton. ystark! provides an outlet for members to interact in a social setting and form relationships that will benefit them in future business endeavors. What is your impression of ystark!, what do you think of their events, etc.? ystark! is a great organization. People are always surprised how much we have accomplished through service projects. I have had a wonderful time participating in the Mother Gooseland cleanup, the Yuletide bike giveaway, and the Bowl for Kids’ Sake. Plus it’s always fun to see peoples’ faces when I tell them I play in the ystark! dodgeball league. Where did you grow up? In what cities have you lived and worked? I grew up in Canton (Ridgewood), went to The College of Wooster, moved back to Canton, worked in Wooster, and am now back working and living in Canton. I know Route 30 quite well.

18

Why have you chosen to live in Canton? My wife, Mandy, and I are both from Canton and wanted to start our family here. I’ve also had the opportunity to start an insurance agency with my father located in downtown Canton. Our goal is to build a quality agency that provides insurance solutions for individuals and businesses throughout Stark County. What type of dwelling do you live in? What do you think of the housing choices for YPs in the Canton area? My wife, daughter, and I live in a home in Market Heights. We love the familyfriendly feel and there are several parks within walking distance. What do you like MOST about Canton? It’s amazing how many great things are in the works in Canton. The city has done a great job with the addition of all of the walking trails and park upgrades. I also like the commitment to revitalize downtown. There are some good new restaurants, and I’m excited to see the development in the southern part of downtown. What do you like LEAST about Canton? It would be nice to see the city focus more on its connection to football. We have a huge asset with the Hall of Fame, and I think that we can bring awareness to what makes Canton great through its affiliation with football. What are the opportunities for YPs in Canton when it comes to career opportunities, cultural access, leadership or community involvement opportunities? Whether it’s business, science, or arts, there are great opportunities in many industries. I have many friends with very different backgrounds and educations and we all have found the ability to build our careers here.

What’s missing from Canton that would attract more YPs? Canton has a lot more to offer than most people realize. You can probably find whatever you are looking for within a 20 mile radius. I think to attract more people to the area we should all just do a better job of promoting the city and its benefits. What do you do in the evenings or on the weekends for fun in Canton? My wife and I love to take walks with our daughter and our dog in the evenings. In the summer, there are plenty of golf courses to try to squeeze nine holes in after work. We also like to go out and root on the Browns on Sundays at the new Winking Lizard in North Canton. What would you change about Canton if you could? I would just like to see Canton stay the course. Many of the things that will help the city are on the way, but will take some time, i.e., trails, dog parks, more downtown restaurants, etc. Could you see yourself spending your lifetime in Canton? That’s the plan right now. I work downtown, my wife is a teacher for Canton City Schools, and our daughter will be starting school in a few years. What would cause you to want to leave Canton? What other cities in the United States would be appealing to you as a home base? Why? Every day brings new opportunities. I don’t plan on leaving anytime soon, but as our company continues to grow, there could be opportunities to expand outside of Canton. I have always found Columbus to be an exciting city for young people and would welcome the opportunity to live there.

AC-3 FORM Chamber’s Workers’ Compensation Group Rating saves significant premium dollars–submit your AC-3 today It’s time to begin planning for your workers’ compensation future. You are likely receiving information from many companies about their group rating programs, and how much money they can save your business. While they may be able to save you money in the short term, these companies often lack the quality, comprehensive customer service and program stability that helps to ensure continued long-term group rating discounts. If your company is interested in group rating, you should be considering the program that supports your local economy. As a member of the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce, it’s important to note that the Chamber has a partnership with CareWorks Consultants Inc. and the Buckeye Workers’ Compensation Alliance. Our Chamber program is one of the most competitive available. In addition to offering significant premium discounts up to the BWC maximum discount, CareWorks Consultants Inc. provides comprehensive cost control services designed to help maintain your group rating status.

Your Chamber membership may already qualify you for this group rating program. Long-term discounts, high savings, program stability and comprehensive quality services could save you significantly by switching your program to CareWorks Consultants. Any company interested in applying, whether a Chamber member or not, should complete the AC-3 Group Rating Application Form on the next page and return it via fax to Denise Burton, director of membership and sales, at (330) 489-6005. For more information about the Group Rating Program from CareWorks Consultants, please contact Bob Nicoli at (330) 452-1050 ext. 14, or Denise Burton at deniseb@ cantonchamber.org.
