Avera, a Houston-based construction and investment company, has completed its construction of the GE Oil and Gas facility at the Mills Business Park on Faircrest Street SW in Canton. GE Oil and Gas could be expected to begin operations in Canton in the next few weeks.

Mills Business Park is approximately one mile west of the Faircrest Street interchange with Interstate 77, which gives the park superior connections to the highway transportation system throughout Stark County. Current businesses at the park include Medline and Old Dominion Freight Lines.

The new facility is 28,000 square feet on five acres. GE Oil & Gas offers advanced technology equipment and services for all segments of the oil and gas industry. GE is the first oil-andgas business to choose the Mills Business Park in Canton as its Utica base of operations. It is estimated that GE Oil & Gas will create about 34 area jobs.

The Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce and the DeHoff Family Foundation are partners in ownership of the Mills Business Park. For more information, contact Steve Katz, senior vice president, at katzcrcc@cantonchamber.org.

I’ve worked in nine American cities; this is the best Chamber of any of them. The Chamber has helped us transform 100,000 sq. ft. of vacant downtown property for new uses, and create 50 new part and full time jobs. We started with only one art gallery and not a single artist studio. Partnering with the Chamber, today we have a Canton Arts District with 26 art galleries and studios. Networking through the Chamber has opened doors for us to the most influential business leaders in the region. Their ability to work effectively with city and county government has accomplished remarkable things.

OIL AND GAS UPDATE Oil & Gas Developments Monthly Report by David Kaminski, Director of Energy and Public Affairs We at the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce had a few conversations in the last month with leaders in real estate. We were interested in how Utica Shale activity was affecting their business. Apparently there is a great effect. We say apparently because we have yet to find statistics that break out real estate transactions involving oil and gas people from real estate transactions involving everyone in the market.

WHAT OUR MEMBERS ARE SAYING ...

Great effect No. 1: The apartment market is strong and has been for two to two and onehalf years, in the view of Donald N. DeVille, president and CEO of DeVille Apartments

& Builders Inc. His 1,200 apartments are maintaining a very high occupancy rate — in the high 90 percent range. The oil and gas tenants have caused DeVille Apartments to adjust practices, such as more short-term leases, and more fully furnished units, “right down to the napkins on the table,” DeVille said. His company has served both blue-collar and executive tenants, and when oil and gas tenants move on, it is often to higher-value apartments. This activity shows that Canton and Stark County can be the Utica Capital for the housing needs of the oil and gas industry.

OIL AND GAS UPDATE

DIRECTORS EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE

(continued ...)

Chairman of the Board - Karen M. Brenneman Hall, Kistler & Company LLP

Compared with the oil fields of Texas and Oklahoma, “an hour drive to Kensington (one work site where a gas processing plant is being built) is not a big deal,” DeVille said.

to $1,400. Executive homes are renting for $2,500 to $3,000 per month.

Though the news is good now, it probably will get better. “There has been a limited amount of drilling to date. People are investing in infrastructure,” DeVille said. “We have not felt the full effect, or the overall impact on housing.”

Great effect No. 3: Linda DeHoff, president of DeHoff Realtors, says her firm is experiencing similar growth. “The selling market is very healthy, very firm, not only in the oil and gas but also in the ancillary businesses.” DeHoff Realtors is involved both in home sales and home and apartment rentals.

Great effect No. 2: Jim Camp, a co-owner and the principal broker with Cutler Real Estate, said this about the state of business: “I can’t ever remember the real estate market being as strong as it is right now,” and Camp has been a licensed real estate agent in Ohio since 1973. People are coming to the area with Chesapeake Energy and with various oil and gas supply and service companies, and they are expecting to be here for a number of years.

And the DeHoffs have demonstrated that there is growing potential in the market for new construction. Linda’s husband, Bob DeHoff, and his partner, Bill Lemmon, recently announced plans to turn Edgewood Golf Course, just north of Easton Street NE on Market Avenue N, into a new housing subdivision under their partnership, McKinley Development. They plan single-family homes and multifamily units for senior residents.

That is not to say that oil and gas is the only reason business is good. Substantial companies such as The Timken Company and Marathon Petroleum bring a steady stream of new people to the market. Like other real estate companies, Cutler doesn’t really quantify how many customers they have from one market segment compared with another. Most of Cutler’s good feeling about the oil and gas market is anecdotal, “a matter of feel,” Camp said.

As impressed as Linda DeHoff is with the increased business activity, she also is impressed with the enrichment of the community by new residents in the energy economy.

The oil and gas business has given birth to a rental division at Cutler. It does not own or manage rental properties the way DeVille Apartments does, but it helps owners find qualified tenants.

“This says these people are interested in longer-term relationships with the community,” Linda DeHoff said. “They are building a more vital community, and adding their knowledge base to the community.”

Tricia Reed heads that operation for Cutler, and she says it is hard to find rental homes in this market. When the rental division opened, she said about 80 percent of the inquiries involved oil and gas workers. “Now it’s maybe 60 percent,” she said, “But the phone is still ringing off the hook.” Workers bringing their families are choosing the Canton area for the shopping, the schools and the other amenities that support their families. “They are open to an hour or hour-and-a-half drive to work,” she said.

LEADERSHIP STARK COUNT Y Leadership Stark County Profile Name: Darren J. Faye Title: Vice President Company: Leonard Insurance Services Leadership Program and Class: 18th Class of the Signature Program Why did you decide participate in the program? I decided to apply for the program for two reasons: first, to learn more about the community that I have lived my whole life in, and second, to meet like-minded business leaders. Describe what you learned about your leadership style during the program: I learned that my leadership style was energetic and out-ofthe-box. I also try to think three steps ahead of any decision and tend to ask a lot of questions to make sure I thoroughly understand the subject at hand. How have you used what you learned during the program in your career or in the workplace? I’ve absolutely used it in my career! The individuals that I have met (and continue to meet) make up a very strong network for me. The program itself opened my mind to my leadership style and how I can best utilize it. The alumni network continues to provide me the ability to pick up the phone and contact someone from industries ranging from construction to nonprofit needs. The program itself might only be 10 months long, but its benefits are life long.

What is your most significant take-away or memory from the program? The most significant takeaway from the program has to be the fact that I had no idea how diverse our community actually is or how many top-notch leaders there are around me. Leadership Stark County has exposed me to these leaders and I have definitely benefited from that exposure. What would you say to someone considering applying to the program? I would tell them that if they are looking for ways to better themselves both professionally and personally, and to better the community around them, then they should apply for the program. How have you remained involved with Leadership Stark County since your graduation? I have remained involved. In addition to currently serving my second term on the board, I have also served on the golf outing, finance/fundraising, and selection committees. What issues do you think future leaders should focus on? I am a firm believer that we are only as good as the team we work with. As Leadership Stark County has developed hundreds of leaders in our community, imagine a company or organization full of devoted, driven, individuals all working towards a common goal. If tomorrow’s leaders are focused and open-minded, then we will all leave this community better than we found it.

How has your experience in the program influenced your service and leadership roles in the community? My experience in the program has definitely opened some doors for me in other non-profits that I have served in the past. I feel more confident when serving—I can more easily relate to the challenges and opportunities that the organization or our community at large are facing. This shortens the learning curve when coming on to a new board and allows me to take a more immediate leadership role after getting involved. What nonprofit organizations do you serve and in what capacity? I am currently the vice chair of Leadership Stark County, the vice chair of the Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival Ribs Burnoff Committee, and I also serve on the board of Catholic Charities serving Portage and Stark Counties.

ENSHRINEMENT FESTIVAL A One of A Kind 50-Year Celebration! It all began on December 9, 1959, when an article appeared in The Canton Repository heralding a home for pro football. The article made the argument for our community—the birthplace of professional football—but to make the Hall of Fame a reality in Canton, the article called for “a combined Herculean effort on the part of civic and sports leaders, industry, and perhaps more important, just plain fans.” Our community answered that challenge, and just three months later, Canton, Ohio, was named the official site of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame opened its doors to the public on September 7, 1963, along with the induction of the inaugural class of 17, ushering in what would become 50 years (and counting) of honoring the legends of professional football. The Enshrinement Festival has grown from just four events that first year to 19 events today, experienced over two and half weeks by nearly 700,000 people, and resulting in an economic impact of nearly $32 million for Canton/Stark County, and $56 million for the State of Ohio. The Herculean effort called for back in 1959 still exists today on an annual basis, with 4,200 extraordinary community volunteers and the professional staffs of the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce and Pro Football Hall of Fame planning and staging the events that surround the central focus of the entire celebration: the Enshrinement of football players, coaches, and contributors into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Join us this year for what is sure to be a “One of a Kind 50-Year Celebration” in the community that started it all.

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS Balloon Classic/Jackson-Belden Food Fest and Fireworks (Fri., July 19 through Sun., July 21): Join in the fun and excitement as 58 hot air balloons take flight! This awesome spectacle delights approximately

YSTARK! Young Professional Profile Editor’s note: In keeping with the ystark!’s mission—to attract and retain talented young people in Stark County— Action Newsletter will feature a monthly profile of an individual who represents the group (ages 20-40) that ystark! is targeting. Name: Matt Conneely Age: 29 Occupation/Title/Place of work: Senior Metallurgical Quality Assurance Engineer, The Timken Company Why are you interested Stark County’s Young Professionals initiative? I think the younger portion of the workforce stands to gain a lot of knowledge and experience by sharing, learning and working together among the wide varieties of industries and employers here. And if we are prepared in those ways, it will lead to a good future for the whole area. What is your impression of ystark!, what do you think of their events, etc.? I like the wide variety of events that ystark! puts together, from the career-oriented sessions to social and recreational activities. There is something for everyone. Where did you grow up? In what cities have you lived and worked? I grew up in Jackson Township. I lived in Columbus during college and briefly lived in Akron after I started working. Why have you chosen to live in Canton/Stark County? It’s central to everything I need. My commute is easy, there are good places for food all over, and I can go to the nearby parks for sights and sounds or other recreation. And if I can’t find something I want in the immediate area,

there’s both the bigger cities and rural areas fairly close by. What type of dwelling do you live in? What do you think of the housing choices for YPs in the area? I live in an apartment. I think there could be more options for types of apartments in the area. The market is better for those who want to own a condo or home. What do you like MOST about Canton? I always have a good time when I go to the McKinley Monument and the parks there. I run there frequently when the weather’s good, not to mention it’s a good place to people watch. My sister even had her wedding photos taken there. What do you like LEAST about Canton? The standard set of complaints for all of Ohio: weather, road work and politics. What are the opportunities for YPs in the area when it comes to career opportunities, cultural access, leadership or community involvement opportunities? I have volunteered a number of times through United Way since they are connected to many community organizations. For culture and arts, the Canton Symphony is always good, and there’s a wide variety of shops in the arts district of downtown. I honestly don’t know the career opportunities since I haven’t had needed to look at them while I’ve been here.

What do you do in the evenings or on the weekends for fun in Canton? I spend most of my time off just trying to relax at home. I do like sampling the different local restaurants in the area. What would you change about Canton if you could? I would add bike lanes. You shouldn’t have to own a car or rely on SARTA to get around safely. Could you see yourself spending your lifetime in Canton? I don’t think I could spend my whole life in just one city. I may move away at some point but I would never hesitate to come back if the circumstances were right. What would cause you to want to leave Canton? What other cities in the United States would be appealing to you as a home base? Why? If a good job opportunity were available for me elsewhere I would take it. I really enjoyed living in Columbus during college and I’ve visited Seattle and Portland before and could see myself living in that region as well. I have family in all of those cities and that is a big plus for me.

What’s missing from Canton that would attract more YPs? Nightlife. It seems like the options for dining, drinking and entertainment are somewhat spread out, making “nights out on the town” more difficult. There are few places that seem to cater specifically to younger crowds.
