A message to our members from the President & CEO The Canton Regional Chamber’s very mission is to inspire growth and business development in our community. This was a difficult mission to fulfill in 2009. This past year was perhaps one of the most challenging in our history and all of our members faced formidable decisions Denny Saunier about the direction of their businesses. As a result, our role as your business advocate has taken on even greater importance. We believe that 2010 will still pose significant issues for local business, but we are seeing economic indicators that suggest cautious optimism as we embark in 2010. As we try to anticipate what the future holds, here are some of the key elements that we’re working to bring to our business members and the community this year:
Generating Economic Development As we prepare to sign our first tenant to Mills Business Park, a 141-acre park located in the city of Canton, it is further confirmation that we now have one of the finest Class A business parks in Northeast Ohio. We will work in 2010 to attract additional developments to our area while helping established companies to retain and grow their businesses in Stark County. Developing New Opportunities for Small Business While we will continue to deliver your favorite networking and educational programs, such as AultCare Fast Break Breakfasts and our semi-annual NETWORK programs, we’ve just unveiled a NEW event – Stir After Hours – perfect for small businesses to expand their networks locally. Also in the works is a major networking opportunity for this fall that we’ll be sharing details on soon. (continued on next page)

Likewise, because we know that education is the foundation for strong business now and in the future, we work alongside local and regional educators to make sure that the voice of local business is represented. Collaborating for Center City Revitalization We are seeing more people in downtown Canton than ever before. We know that a strong region needs a strong center city, and we’re working to ensure the city’s prosperity. We have

welcomed new businesses to the center city and we have helped with the growth of Canton’s Arts District. Thanks to our downtown Canton events, including First Fridays, Taste of Canton, Zing in the City, Canton Blues Fest, Vintage Canton and Light Up Downtown, tens of thousands of people in our community are enjoying downtown Canton. Increasing Travel and Tourism for Stark County Travel and tourism to the region is on the forefront of our minds, and we’re working to bring another 20 years of the OHSAA State Football Championships to Canton. We’re also looking forward to welcoming the new class of Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinees, football heroes including guard Russ Grimm, linebacker Rickey Jackson, cornerback Dick LeBeau, running back Floyd Little, defensive tackle John Randle, wide receiver Jerry Rice and running back Emmitt Smith, to Canton at the 47th annual Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival this summer. Expect to see new market access, training and selling seminars, and many opportunities in 2010. For a full look at our 2010 Strategic Plan, please visit: CantonChamber.org/StrategicPlan. Sincerely,

Young Entrepreneur Snapshot proud GlenOak and Malone grad. Lake Township is a peaceful place to raise a family. How have the amenities of Stark County contributed to your success? Most of my clients are in NE Ohio, so my location near the Akron-Canton Airport provides perfect access to the I-77 corridor, which connects me to the north and south. It’s an affordable place to do business and I can draw new talent from many local universities.
Editor’s note: In keeping with ystark!’s mission – to attract, retain and ENGAGE talented young people in Stark County – ACTION will feature monthly snapshots of outstanding young entrepreneurs throughout 2010.
Why is having a strong YP community important for your business? In my business, creativity and fresh ideas are our lifeblood, so I need to infuse my business with young, driven, creative folks. More importantly, I have three children who I would like to see thrive in this region. The YP community of today builds the foundation for the YP community of tomorrow.
What are your thoughts on ystark!? I wish I wasn’t on the top end of the age limit! It’s a fabulous resource for my young team members and a group that gets things done. I’m impressed with the number of young professionals joining non-profit boards and diving in to solve issues in our community. What advice would you give to YPs who share your entrepreneurial streak but are just getting started? Remain teachable. Talk to as many entrepreneurs as possible. You’ll glean nuggets of wisdom from each one. Don’t burn any bridges. Be transparent and honest – with your clients and your employees. And find a trustworthy attorney and accountant. I’ve found these two resources invaluable over the years. What’s next for you? Every day is a new adventure! Grabowski & Co. has grown dramatically in the last few years, so I’ve spent time managing that growth. This year, I am focused on setting our course for the next decade.

I worked in several positions to hone my writing, project management and strategy skills then gathered talented people around me before going on my own in 1997. Which attributes best define you as an entrepreneur? I’m a bit of a risk-taker, willing to say yes to nearly any project that comes my way. I’m also a bridge builder, so as I meet people and learn about their strengths, I try to connect them with others who need that skill. Why have you chosen Canton as your home base? Subsidized Employment Program may help local businesses and unemployed The Stark County Department of Job & Family Services (SCDJFS) is providing new opportunities to local employers. Funding recently became available to offer assistance to local employers to hire unemployed or under-employed individuals. The Subsidized Employment Program (SEP) is designed to financially assist local employers with increasing their workforce at a reduced cost to their bottom line. SCDJFS will pay 75 percent of new employee wages and medical/dental/ vision benefits. The hired individual must be at or below 200 percent of the poverty level and have a

minor child. Local employers may utilize this funding through Aug. 21, 2010. “SEP should provide a boost for some of our local employers. Our goal is to help families attain selfsufficiency,” said Tom Thompson, SCDJFS Deputy Director of Human Services. Under the program, SCDJFS pays the 75 percent subsidy until Aug. 21, while the employee continues to work and earn a living. Employers are responsible for just 25 percent of the new employees’ wages and medical/dental/vision benefits.
