Are You Ready for Some Football? Canton Kickoff Weekend Sept. 10-13 The Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival fun continues with two NEW events in downtown Canton this month! CANTON KICKOFF CELEBRATION - THU-FRI-SAT, SEPT. 10, 11, and 12 This three-day event, “Canton’s Ultimate Kickoff Party,” coincides with the first game of the NFL season on Thursday night! Enjoy footballthemed family fun, including delicious food, beverages, activities and live music from 11:00 am to 10:30 pm daily. It’s all happening downtown - along Market Avenue North from 2nd to 4th Streets, in the parking area on the corner of 4th and Cleveland Avenue, as well as the 4th Street Arts District. The area was recently enhanced by the installation of the second of “The Eleven” pieces, this one known as “The NFL Draft.” Thursday evening will showcase several Gold Jacket/Hall of Famers and a special activity that we hope to become an annual tradition, (continued on page eight)
Chamber Opposes Proposed Ohio Amendment to Legalize Marijuana

The Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce is announcing its opposition to a proposed Ohio constitutional amendment that would permit growing, processing and sale of marijuana for recreational and medicinal use. The organization promoting this amendment calls itself ResponsibleOhio. The Canton Regional Chamber opposes the amendment out of concern for member businesses that strive to hire and maintain a drug-free workforce. The Chamber also is announcing its support for a constitutional amendment brought forth by the Ohio Legislature that would make
it difficult to use the Ohio Constitution for creation of a business monopoly. The Chamber believes that the ResponsibleOhio proposal is attempting to create a business monopoly by using the state Constitution to limit commercial growing of marijuana to 10 specific sites, one of them in Alliance. Both the marijuana amendment and the anti-business monopoly amendment will be presented to voters in the Nov. 3 election. Regardless of the outcome of the November vote in Ohio, marijuana would remain illegal under federal law.

“In our strategic plan, we are dedicated to helping foster a qualified, competent workforce for business success, which leads to job growth,” said Canton Regional Chamber President and CEO Dennis P. Saunier. “Our opposition to ResponsibleOhio is based on workforce concerns: qualifying new employees for a drug-free workplace, maintaining a drugfree workplace, and unclear consequences for employers who have workers with medicinal marijuana prescriptions from physicians.” Though many of the largest employers among the Canton Regional Chamber’s 1,600 members have concerns about ResponsibleOhio’s marijuana proposal, Saunier said that the concerns are likely to be greater for small and medium-sized businesses because they do not have large human resources and legal departments to deal with this issue. Over the last few months, the Chamber consulted with representatives of both large and small businesses. It surveyed business leaders associated in various ways with the Chamber. Finally, Chamber leaders
met three times with representatives of ResponsibleOhio in an attempt to clearly understand their proposal. The Canton Regional Chamber will speak and write in opposition to ResponsibleOhio’s proposal between now and the Nov. 3 vote. It also will urge voters to support the effort to put severe limits on well-funded campaigns that would create business monopolies within the state’s Constitution. The investors in ResponsibleOhio who would control the 10 growing sites are prepared to spend $20 million to persuade Ohio voters to approve their amendment. ResponsibleOhio’s television campaign began during the broadcast of the Republican presidential debate in Cleveland last month. OIL & GAS September Oil and Gas News Rover Pipeline LLC has updated its economic impact estimates for Ohio, and it’s good news. The pipeline is expected to purchase more than $85 million in goods and services from Ohio businesses as its builders create an underground route for gas from the Utica and Marcellus shale gas fields to Michigan and Ontario. The route will pass in a west-northwest direction through Harrison, Carroll, Tuscarawas, Stark and Wayne counties on its way to Defiance, Ohio, where it will change its main direction northward toward Michigan.

Natural gas is in favor with the Obama Administration, relatively speaking. the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recently announced its Clean Power Plan, which is bad news for the coal industry and for coal-fired power plants. The Ohio companies that have signed contracts to supply and service the Rover work include: Ariel Corp., Industrial Piping Specialists, Emerson Process Management Automation, Port of Cleveland, Tiger Sand & Gravel, Pioneer Pipe, and Lincoln Electric. In addition, Rover will create 6,500 Ohio construction jobs, pay local landowners almost $100 million in easement payments, generate $135 million in Ohio ad valorem taxes, and support $147 million in property tax revenue during the first year of service.

Tiger Swing Band received second place honors, and North Canton Hoover High School Band placed third in the competition. Each also will receive Zampino gift certificates valued at $300 and $200, respectively. The Battle of the Bands, an integral part of the TimkenSteel Grand Parade, is open to any high school band participating in the parade. Performances are evaluated on tone, intonation, ensemble execution and musical content by three judges with extensive marching band experience, and who are not directly associated with any participating marching band. DRUM CORPS INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION The 2015 Drum Corps International Competition was an exciting show featuring seven of the best drum corps in America. The corps were at their peak performance levels just days before the world championships, and final scores were as follows: 7th Place: 87.800 – The Cavaliers (Rosemont, IL) 6th Place: 88.300 – Phantom Regiment (Rockford, IL) 5th Place: 89.500 – Blue Knights (Denver, CO) 4th Place: 91.750 – Santa Clara Vanguard (Santa Clara, CA) Tied for 2nd Place: 94.650 – The Cadets (Allentown, PA), and Bluecoats (Canton, OH) 1st Place: 95.050 – Carolina Crown (Ft. ENSHRINEMENT FESTIVAL It Was Indeed a One of a Kind Celebration of Excellence! Thanks to everyone who played a part in planning and staging the 2015 Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival! The staffs at the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce and Pro Football Hall of Fame proudly joined with 4,500 extraordinary community volunteers to plan and stage a wide variety of events over two and a half weeks for the enjoyment of nearly 700,000 people. It was indeed a “ONE OF A KIND CELEBRATION OF EXCELLENCE!” Our community is a special place, filled with special people, and never is it more evident than during the Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival, one of the most spectacular traditions in all of sports. Nowhere can fans see so many of the greatest heroes of the game in one place, at one time, including the Class of 2015 and a large contingent of returning Gold Jackets/ Hall of Famers. What a thrill it was to be in the national spotlight with vast exposure including print, radio, and television, especially with the expanded broadcast of the Enshrinees’ Gold Jacket Dinner on NFL Network, and broadcast of the Enshrinement Ceremony and the NFL/Hall of Fame Game which kicked-off the NFL’s 96th season.

There are two areas featuring great food. Taste of the Hall of Fame City will be located along Market Avenue North between 2nd and 3rd or 4th Streets, featuring “small bites” from area restaurants. The EMP End Zone Tailgate Lot will feature a casual tailgate atmosphere in the parking lot bordered by Cleveland and Court Avenues/4th and 5th Streets. It’s not a tailgate without burgers, beers, brats, and more, so vendors will bring their football flare and show everyone how to host a “hall of fame worthy” tailgate party.

BIZ BITZ Barbara J. Stankowski, owner, president and CEO of AMTIS Inc. and a retired U.S. Navy captain, will present Organizational Culture as the keynote address for the Entrepreneur Experience on Tuesday, Oct. 6 from 7:30 - 9:30 a.m. at Kent State University at Stark’s Conference Center, 6000 Frank Avenue NW in Jackson Township. The event is sponsored by the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) and the Stark Entrepreneurship Alliance. The Entrepreneur Experience series, presented by the SBDC at Kent State Stark, is designed to encourage the professional practices of entrepreneurs at all levels. The proceeds from these events benefit the Small Business Development Center Scholarship Fund. Westfield Bank, a regional community bank with eight locations in northeastern Ohio, has announced the hiring of Michelle Del Rio-Keller as vice president, commercial loan officer, and Thomas J. Heidy as vice president, treasury management officer. In her new position, Del Rio-Keller will focus on generating new commercial loan business and building long-term customer relationships in the Stark and Wayne county markets. A Massillon native and currently serving as a board member for numerous non-profit organizations throughout Stark County, she comes to Westfield Bank with more than 28 years of banking experience. Heidy arrives at Westfield Bank with outstanding industry credentials garnered from more than 25 years of financial experience. In his new role, he is responsible for leading the treasury management efforts of the Bank in the Stark and Wayne county markets by cultivating relationships with existing customers and developing new business opportunities. Heidy is a Certified Treasury Professional (CTP) and Accredited ACH Professional (AAP) and is currently pursuing a Master of Business Administration degree at Walsh University. Biery Cheese, a fourth-generation cheese producer headquartered in Louisville, Ohio, recently dedicated its cheese production facility in Plover, Wisconsin, with a ribbon cutting ceremony held August 1. The award-winning cheese producer acquired the Kickapoo Valley Cheese Company, located in Sherry, WI, in November 2013 and followed up that acquisition with the purchase of Basic American Foods’ production facility in Plover, WI in April 2014. Since the acquisitions, Biery has been making capital improvements at that plant, which is now officially known as Biery – Plover.
Innis Maggiore has announced two additions to the agency’s web development team to help it further its growing number of client digital projects. Jason Henry of Canton joined the agency’s staff of associates as a senior web developer and Joseph Chenevey of Akron was hired as a web developer. Henry earned a bachelor’s degree in computer science from Kent State University. He most recently worked in software development for OEC, and prior to that, FirstMerit, bringing to the agency a wealth of experience on the .NET platform and MVC framework. Chenevey comes to Innis Maggiore from Informediate, Inc. where he honed his extensive programing skills and developed business intelligence solution applications and a warehouse management system. He earned a degree from Kent State University and is working on another degree in technology. The local and state demand for more medical assistants and other positions in hospital settings and physician offices will be met thanks to a $386,616 Sector Partnership National Emergency Grant from the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) that the Workforce Investment Board of Stark and Tuscarawas Counties has received. The local Board will provide funding for eligible dislocated workers for both classroom and on-the-job training for medical assistants and other healthcare in-demand positions that are paid above the entry level rate of pay for the region. The purpose of the National Emergency Grant is to assist states and local workforce boards to provide in-demand career pathways for the dislocated workers. The grant is designed to effectively and efficiently re-employ dislocated workers, so those eligible for the program must be dislocated workers who have been unemployed for at least 27 weeks, unemployment insurance claimants likely to exhaust their benefits, or eligible veterans. The Malone University Wellness Council will host the eighth annual Malone University 5K and Pump & Run -- in honor of Coach Jack Hazen’s 48 years (and counting) of service to the running community – Saturday, October 3, 2015, on the home turf of the Pioneer cross country teams. Participants may compete in the 5K run only, or combine a bench press (the pump) and a 5-K (the run). Runners will earn a deduction from their race time relative to the amount of repetitions they were able to pump. Overall and age group prizes will be awarded as well as t-shirt giveaways and more. Participants who wish will receive free admission to the Malone zoo room and illusionist show taking place on the campus later that day. The pump will begin at 7 a.m.; the run will begin at 8:30 a.m. Walkers, families, kids, and competitors are all welcome!
Aultman Hospital is searching for wellbehaved dogs of all sizes and their dedicated owners to participate in Happy Tails, a dog visitation program that exposes patients, family, visitors and staff to the positive experience of interacting with an animal. With the help of volunteers, the Aultman Hospital Happy Tails program provides a positive psycho-social experience and alternative therapy for patients. Research shows that spending time with a pet can reduce blood pressure and stress, normalize heart rate and improve circulation. The next Pet Partners Handler Course is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 3 at 8 a.m. The fee for this course is $50 and includes lunch, snacks, handler’s book and handouts. The course will be held in the Morrow House Auditorium at Aultman Hospital. Registration is required by Friday, Sept. 25. You must complete this course to evaluate with your dog. Pet Partners evaluations will be held by appointment only on Saturday, Oct. 17 at Aultman Hospital. The deadline to register for evaluations is Saturday, Oct. 3. On August 1 The Sidewalk Museum opened in downtown Louisville, OH. It consists of 15 giant 4 by 8 foot paintings mounted vertically on the side walk along Main Street. Eight of the paintings, which celebrate specific moments in Louisville history, are by teacher Ben Miller’s Louisville High School art students: Rachel Archer, Adriana Beaver, Paige Davis, Celia Keefe, Sami Keefe, Erin Kelly, Alexis Pochubay, and Alexis Springer. Seven are by professional artist Tommy Morgan. “We’re trying out The Sidewalk Museum for the first time anywhere in Louisville,” says ArtsinStark CEO Robb Hankins. The outdoor exhibit of temporary public art is part of 20/20 Vision and will be up for just three months. It is sponsored by ArtsinStark, the City of Louisville, and the Louisville Area Chamber of Commerce.
