Canton Rangers Football Festival | Cantonian High School | 13th / 14th June 2015

FORWARD FROM THE CHAIRMAN On behalf of Canton Rangers, I would like to welcome you all to Cantonian High School for our annual Mini & Junior football festival. Today would not be possible without the help of our coaches, club volunteers, parents and senior team players, so I thank those that have, in some way, made a valuable contribution to our club. I would also like to thank the businesses that are supporting our festival, whether by placing an advert in this programme, pitching display tents or running stalls. The generous support of Darlows is really appreciated also. Thank you. Our club’s members have worked continually and tirelessly since 2013 to make this ground our home, from painting the schools changing rooms, seeding, groundwork and installing new showers for pupils and our members to use. Over the past 24 months we have seen the completion of the first & second phase of our ground development. We are now looking forward to the start of phase three, in partnership with the school and other community groups. All funds raised from today will help achieve this. There will be a lot of talented youngsters playing today from all over Wales, and we hope everyone benefits from a ground widely considered one of the best venues for mini and junior football in Cardiff. We really hope you enjoy yourselves; not just from the football on display, but the other activities going on. We have a range of stalls, bouncy castles and a selection of major trophies waiting for your pictures with them. Again, from all at Canton Rangers, we thank you for taking part. We hope to see you at next year’s mini and junior festival in June 2016...

Andrew

CANTON RANGERS FOOTBALL FESTIVAL A LOOK BACK AT 2014 Eyelids were heavy after a late Friday night setting up tents, cutting grass, painting lines, roping off safe areas, ensuring portaloos were in place and checking the PA system. It was safe to say that no stone was left unturned before our very first mini football festival. Despite the tiredness, our excitement was mounting after the many months of planning. Invitations had gone far and wide; 60 teams were attending from as east as Newport and as west as Llanelli.

Just some of the feedback we received last year… “We have played in a couple of festivals since the season finished and thought this one was the best. They all loved the day and the pictures with the trophies and during matches was a great idea” Ian, Ty Celyn (Cardiff)

When Saturday comes… Dawn had just broken when the festival committee, friends, family and other volunteers gathered at the Registration tent at Cantonian High. Little did the regular flock of seagulls know what was in store as they pecked away on the empty pitches under a slowly-clearing sky. However, little did we know what to expect as high visibility jackets, walkie-talkies, bags of float money, registration forms, car parking stickers and many other items were handed out to key people. As this was our first festival, we could only estimate how many adults and friends would attend with their teams. However, we knew our excellent facilities and the copious amount of land would cope with the demands. And so it began… The morning registration opened at 8:45am, but by 8:30 nobody had arrived. Worried frowns were etched on the faces of the committee, but there was no need to fret. A few minutes later, the on-site car park was already half full. Club coaches were greeted by three volunteers on the registration tent to swiftly complete the registration process. Meanwhile, excited groups of boys and girls, aged between 5 and 10, used our safe area to change in to their club strips; all eager to show off their footballing skills. Owing to excellent planning by the committee all teams were ready, with matches kicking off on time. The sun blazed down and we could never have predicted that one of our main concerns throughout the day would be that the teams had enough to drink and avoided sunburn. By 1.30 all morning players received their mementos. It was now over to the older afternoon teams, all of whom had arrived, registered and prepared for their 1:45 start.

"We are all used to receiving letters of complaint for this that or the other. That is why I hope this is a pleasant surprise. I was hugely impressed! The planning emails, organisation, the timing, the pitch sizes, the programme, and the behaviours of parents and coaches. Thank you for an amazing day. Considering this is your first, I certainly hope it’s the first of many." Matt, Brynawel (Swansea)

“On behalf of Seaside AFC I would like to thank you for a great day. The organisation was first class, lovely pitches to play on and in a friendly / fun atmosphere. We thoroughly enjoyed the day and will be returning next year.” Stuart, Seaside AFC (Llanelli)

Canton Rangers Football Festival | Cantonian High School | 13th / 14th June 2015

A day for all to remember… Walking around, it was great to see so many families enjoying our facilities and the activities we provided. There really was something for everyone; a bouncy castle, face painting, photograph sessions, a chance to have a picture next to the World Cup, bric-a-brac stalls, sweets and cakes, and refreshment vans selling a variety of food, drink and ice creams. The final matches finished at 5.30 and, after the afternoon’s memento presentation, boys and girls with happy faces climbed back into their cars to make their way home. As the festival committee and stallholders packed everything away, the sun was going down and shadows lengthened over the emptying fields. Peace had returned, and so had the seagulls.

So what did we learn? Everyone connected with our club was delighted with the day and how it surpassed our wildest dreams. We received excellent feedback from several teams during the day, all stressing how much they enjoyed taking part and would like to attend the next festival. This positivity was furthered by the messages received via social media and email. We were also thrilled that Cantonian High School, St John’s Ambulance and South Wales Police were very pleased with the event too. We could not have hosted our first festival without the vision and hard work of the festival committee, our festival sponsors, Darlows, and the school. Most importantly, a huge thank you has to go to the 60 participating teams and 1,500 people that came on the day. What we’ve done this year… Festivals are an invaluable way of providing fun and enjoyable football over the summer. However, it also enables us to generate much-needed funds, which are used to ensure our continued survival and the provision of football to our 254 members. Our main aim was to ensure more people, children and teams could enjoy the 2015 festival. This year caters for a mini football festival (Under 6 – Under 11) for boys and girls on Saturday, followed by our first ever junior festival (Under 12 – Under 16) for boys on the Sunday. We have an amazing 136 teams from across South Wales attending this weekend. Pleasingly, this includes 28 Canton Rangers teams across every age category. Please let us know what you think of the festival on Facebook and Twitter. We thank those returning to our festival this year – and hope teams attending for the very first time have a great experience. We hope you’ll join us – and the seagulls – at Cantonian in June 2016!

SPICE IS A SOCIAL ENTERPRISE THAT SUPPORTS ORGANISATIONS TO DEVELOP TIME CREDIT SYSTEMS. Starting in Wales in 2009, we work with hundreds of organisations across the UK, supporting thousands of people to give time to their communities and services. We work with schools, housing associations and health services. SPICE SCHOOLS works with schools across South Wales developing and integrating time credit systems. Students and parents can earn a time credit for going the extra mile; they can then spend this time credit in various organisations in the UK. For more information about Spice Schools and how to get involved with time credits contact: Steven Williams – Steve@justaddspice.org The Spice Schools project is kindly funded by Interreg IVB Northwest Europe as part of the Community Currencies in Action project.
