The CAN team consists of a diverse group of trained staff, experienced support workers and dedicated volunteers who administer programs in safe and supportive environments.

CommunityWorks Canada® (ages 15-21)
The CommunityWorks Canada® program provides opportunities for teens with autism ages 15-21, to volunteer alongside typical peers in a variety of community settings while developing work skills and building communication and social skills. The program is funded in part by the Government of Canada's Opportunities Fund for Persons with Disabilities Program, and is offered by the Canucks Autism Network as part of a new federally funded national project called Worktopia. Previous sessions have been at Science World, Union Gospel Mission, Canuck Place, and community gardens.

I CAN Get Fit
(ages 16-30)
The purpose of the I CAN Get Fit program is to offer teens and adults with autism the opportunity to participate in a fitness class designed to promote physical and social development in a safe and supportive environment. Program Structure & Supports Each session of the fitness program consists of 90-minute fitness lessons, once per week, for multiple weeks. Fitness lessons will focus on aerobic endurance, strength, and flexibility and will include individual, partner, and group exercises. Sessions for this program takes place three times during the year; fall (mid-October to late November), winter (late January to early March), and spring (mid-April to late May). At Canucks Autism Network, we strive to meet the needs of each participant and welcome parent collaboration. Our staff receive training on a variety of support strategies to assist individuals with autism. Please do not hesitate to speak with the program coordinator about strategies to use with the participant (e.g. visual schedules, first-then boards, token systems, social stories, etc.).

The purpose of family events is to provide families with opportunities to enjoy a variety of fun activities in a safe, supportive, non-judgmental environment. Canucks Autism Network offers a range of activities throughout the year that are open to the entire family, with all ages welcome. Due to the family nature of the events 1:1 support is not available; however, each family event is supported by many helpful volunteers.

I CAN Do Gymnastics
(ages 3-12)
The purpose of this program is to teach gymnastics skills to children and youth with autism in a safe and supportive environment. Through a variety of activities the program will focus on basic gymnastics skills, as well as general gym safety. Participants will be able to gain exposure to all of the typical equipment found in a gymnastics facility, such as floor, beam, bars, rings and trampoline.
Program Structure & Supports Each session of the I CAN Do Gymnastics program consists of 45-60 minute lessons, once per week, for multiple weeks. Lessons include circuit style activities, individual or small group skill practice, and group games. Sessions for this program takes place three times during the year; fall (midOctober to late November), winter (late January to early March), and spring (mid-April to late May). Participants are supported by trained program coaches, experienced support workers, and dedicated volunteers. Canucks Autism Network strives to meet the needs of each participant and encourages parents to speak with the program coaches and staff about useful support strategies for their child such as visual schedules, first-then boards, token systems, social stories, etc. Canucks Autism Network (CAN) is excited to be providing this program in partnership with Cameron Recreation Centre, Delta Gymnastics Society and Kerrigan Gymnastics Academy. Each facility will provide qualified gymnastics coaches to oversee the lessons and work in collaboration with CAN to make adaptions to curriculum to ensure the success of participants. To assist participants enrolled in the gymnastics program better prepare for their experience, the Canucks Autism Network has prepared this Gymnastics Social Storybook. I CAN Be Active
(ages 3-6)
A gym based introduction to movement and sports skills (formerly known as the Physical Literacy program) The purpose of the I CAN Be Active program is to teach children with autism, and their siblings, fundamental movement skills in a safe and supportive environment. Learning fundamental movement skills such as running, jumping and balancing helps children build the confidence necessary for a lifetime of sport and physical activity. This program is designed to give children the opportunity to be active and work on their physical literacy through games.
Program Structure & Supports Each session of the I CAN Be Active program consists of 45 minute lessons, once per week, for multiple weeks. Sessions for this program takes place three times during the year; fall (mid-October to late November), winter (late January to early March), and spring (mid-April to late May). I CAN Play Sports
(ages 7-15)
An introduction to soccer, basketball, and gym based games (formerly known as the Basketball and Soccer Programs) The purpose of the I CAN Play Sports program is to provide children with autism, and their siblings, a fun introduction into the world of sports! Participants will enjoy games and drills that work on fundamental movement skills, specifically those used in the sports of soccer and basketball. This program is designed to provide a fun, safe and supportive environment for all those taking part.
Program Structure & Supports Each session of the I CAN Play Sports program consists of 60 minute lessons, once per week, for multiple weeks. Sessions for this program take place three times during the year; fall (mid-October to late November), winter (late January to early March), and spring (mid-April to late May). Each week, lessons will include a mix of individual practice and group games that work on skills relating to physical literacy, soccer and basketball. These activities will help to develop basic movement skills that are used in a variety of sports settings. At Canucks Autism Network, we strive to meet the needs of each participant. The program will be supported by trained coaches, experienced support workers and dedicated volunteers. Our staff receive training on a variety of support strategies for children and youth with autism. Outdoor Rec Rec - lower mainland Outdoor (ages 16-30)
The purpose of the Outdoor Rec program, in partnership with Power to Be, is to offer teens and adults with autism the opportunity to enjoy a variety of outdoor activities in a safe and supportive environment.
Program Structure & Supports The Outdoor Rec program is led by Power to Be, and participants are highly supported by trained CAN staff and dedicated volunteers. Activities may include hiking, kayaking, snowshoeing, geocaching, and more. CAN and Power To Be will be working in collaboration to provide high quality, outdoor recreation activities in a safe and fun environment. For more information about Power NOTE: The Lower Mainland program has been restructured from previous years. Monthly Outdoor Rec Program (September-February) Activities will change on a monthly basis, and participants will register for each month they are interested in attending. Social Group for siblings of individuals with autism
(ages 8-13)
The purpose of this program is to provide siblings of individuals with autism the opportunity to meet other siblings in a safe and supportive environment. Siblings have the opportunity to discuss their experiences with other siblings through various discussion activities. In addition, siblings have the opportunity to engage in fun, recreational activities with their peers. This program is led by staff and volunteers, the majority of whom are siblings of individuals with autism.
Program Structure & Supports Events are planned once per month from Sept-June (with the exception of Dec.). Please check this page and/or the newsletter for the monthly events. Participants are supported by a Coach, two Support Workers, and two volunteers.

Social Group: for teens & young adults
(ages 13-30)
The purpose of the social group is to offer the opportunity for teens and young adults with autism to get together and have a good time in a safe and supportive environment. The events change each month to offer a range of fun, age appropriate activities for participants to experience with their peers.
Program Structure & Supports Events are planned once per month. Please check this website and/or the newsletter for this month’s event. Participants are supported by a Program Coordinator, four Support Workers and Volunteers. Past events have included: Bowling, sports events, charity events, art classes, dinners, laser tag, beach BBQ, water sports, snow sports, dance class and more! At Canucks Autism Network, we strive to meet the needs of each participant through parent and participant collaboration. Our staff receive training on a variety of support strategies for individuals with ASD. Social Group: for kids with autism (ages 9-12)
The purpose of the monthly social group is to offer the opportunity for children and pre-teens with autism between the ages of 9-12 to get together and have a good time in a safe and supportive environment. The events change each month to offer a range of fun, age appropriate activities for participants to experience with their peers.
Program Structure & Supports Events are planned once per month. Please check this website and/or the newsletter for this month’s event. Participants are supported by a Program Coordinator, four Support Workers and Volunteers.
Past events have included: Art/music classes, snow tubing, Lego party, circus school, Xtreme Air Park, Vancouver Aquarium, Playland, riding trains, rock climbing, laser tag and more! At Canucks Autism Network, we strive to meet the needs of each participant through parent and participant collaboration. Our staff receive training on a variety of support strategies for individuals with ASD. Please do not hesitate to speak with our staff about strategies that should be implemented (e.g., visual schedules, first-then boards, token systems, social stories, etc.)

I CAN Skate: i & ii (ages 3-15)
The purpose of the I CAN Skate program is to teach skating skills to children and youth with autism in a safe and supportive environment.
I CAN Skate I (3-6yrs, 7-15yrs) The Skate I program focuses on basic skills such as moving forward, gliding and stopping.
I CAN Skate II (7-15yrs) The Skate II program introduces more advanced skills such as crossovers, backwards skating, and pivoting. Skate II is intended for participants who are confident moving forward, gliding and stopping, and would like to build on their skating skills.
Prerequisites for Skate II program: Participants eligible for the Skate II program are able to complete the following on the ice: get up unassisted, glide forward for 2ft, glide forward while touching knees or toes 2ft, stop by snow plow and with hockey stop, striding forwards, jumping from standing, and pivoting frontwards and backwards.
Program Structure & Supports Each session of the skate program consists of 30 minute lessons, once per week, for multiple weeks. Lessons include choice time, individual or small group skill practice, and group games. Participants are supported by trained program coaches, experienced support workers, and dedicated volunteers. The Canucks Autism Network strives to meet the needs of each participant and encourages parents to speak with the program coaches and staff about useful support strategies for their child. This includes visual schedules, first-then boards, token systems, social stories, etc.

I CAN Swim (preschool-young adult) (ages 3-30)
The purpose of the I CAN Swim program is to teach basic swimming and water safety skills to children, teens and young adults with autism in a safe and supportive environment. The objective of this program is to help participants develop swim and water safety skills that will assist them in enjoying a lifetime of water recreation pursuits.
Program Structure & Supports Each session of the I CAN Swim program consists of lessons once per week, for multiple weeks. Sessions for this program take place three times during the year; fall (mid-October to late November), winter (late January to early March), and spring (mid-April to mid-June). Each lesson consists of a small group of participants with a high ratio of support provided by a certified swim instructor, trained support workers and dedicated volunteers. Lessons include skill development and water safety awareness in a fun environment. *With a high ratio support provided parents and other family members are asked to remain in the waiting area while the program is taking place . At Canucks Autism Network, we strive to meet the needs of each participant and encourage parent collaboration. Our staff receive training on a variety of support strategies for children and youth with autism. Kids Swim (ages 7-12)
The purpose of the I CAN Swim program is to teach basic swimming and water safety skills to children, teens and young adults with autism in a safe and supportive environment. The objective of this program is to help participants develop swim and water safety skills that will assist them in enjoying a lifetime of water recreation pursuits.
Level 1 (Previously levels 1,2,3): This program focuses on foundational skills, while building swimmers confidence. Participants will work on skills including entering the water, shallow water movement, bubbles, submersions, rhythmic breathing, floats, glides and front swim for a distance of 5 meters. *Prerequisite: No previous swim experience required, participants who previously were enrolled in the 2015-16 CAN swim level I, II, or II program.
Level 2 (Previously level 4): This program will continue to build on the foundational skills completed in level 1, focusing on glides (front, back and roll over). Participants will continue to work on swim endurance with a distance of 10 meters. An introduction to deep water activities and lifejackets will also be included. *Prerequisite: Participants who are confident in the skills that are worked on in Level I, and/or who have previously completed CAN's Level III swim during the 2015-16 year. Level 3 (Previously level 5): This program will continue to expand on skills completed in level 2, adding in front glide/side glide combination, and increasing swim distance to 15 meters. Swimmers will spend a significant amount of time in the deep water practicing safety skills, as well as being introduced to sitting dive and deep water support. *Prerequisite: Participants who are confident in their ability to perform the skills outlined for Level II, and/or who have previously completed CAN's See next page for Winter location and times.

Participants are supported by trained program coaches, experienced support workers, and dedicated volunteers.
