“Get in on the Buzz” The Abbotsford Mission Times has asked federal candidates in both local ridings to answer a short list of questions that embrace a few of the issues that matter most in advance of the May 2 election. Candidates have generously responded to help provide readers with some insight on their individual and party’s position. Today we present the Abbotsford riding candidates. Look for party nominee responses from the Pitt Meadows – Maple Ridge – Mission riding in our Friday edition.

■ 1. What issue do you think is the top concern for Abbotsford/ Mission voters, and how will you/ your party address it? At the moment water is the most important issue, specifically the proposed P3 development of a new water source. My party wants to make sure that water remains entirely in the hands of the public and that we don’t set precedents for private ownership, even of a fraction of a basic necessity. The federal government should never force a municipality to choose between P3 or no funding.

■ 1. What issue do you think is the top concern for Abbotsford/ Mission voters, and how will you/ your party address it? I believe the top issue for Abbotsford voters is jobs and ensuring that Canada’s economy continues to lead the world in emerging from the world economic crisis. Critical to that effort is controlling federal spending and keeping taxes on individual Canadians and businesses low. Sadly, the opposition parties have proposed billions of dollars of new taxes on iPods, the Internet, carbon emissions and businesses. We will not do so.

■ 1. What issue do you think is the top concern for Abbotsford/ Mission voters, and how will you/ your party address it? Everyone is worried about the economy, inflation and personal debt. In the last five years, the middle class in Canada has been shrinking. Good-paying jobs are going offshore. Young Canadian males are twice as likely to be unemployed than any other group. Two-income families are working harder and longer than they were five years ago but they aren’t getting ahead. Liberals know middle-class families and small business are the bedrock of our economy. A thriving middle class will make Canada more competitive and productive. The fully costed Liberal platform can support families without raising their taxes and without raising taxes for small business. The youth hiring incentive helps small business and youth by establishing a full EI holiday for three years on new youth hires.

■ 1. What issue do you think is the top concern for Abbotsford/ Mission voters, and how will you/ your party address it? The people of Abbotsford share a number of equally important concerns. They are worried that they might not keep or find a family sustaining job, and worry for their children. They like our public health care system, and want it to flower, not wither from under funding. They are concerned about our environmental future, doing what they can at home, but looking for leadership, not denial from our members of parliament. They are worried about the absence of affordable housing, and are hoping they can afford post-secondary education for their children. They feel gouged by the banks and need their life to be more affordable. See our entire platform at www.ndp.ca/ platform

■ How do you/your party propose to support families, particularly given the impacts of the recent economic recession? Income splitting for ALL families, increase child benefit subsidies, more funding for childcare facilities and overall reduction of income taxes. And most importantly, we want to create a Guaranteed Livable Income so that no one is below the poverty line. This money is easily found by removing corporate tax breaks and subsidies. ■ A) How would you rank the following issues: Affordable housing/homelessness ( 1), healthcare ( 2 ), education ( 3 ), the environment (***).

■ How do you/your party propose to support families, particularly given the impacts of the recent economic recession? Our recent budget provided for increased tax credits for children enrolled in arts and sports programs. Our government was the one that introduced the Universal Child Care Benefit, reduced the GST from 7 to 5 per cent, and introduced a family tax credit for those with children under the age of 18. Indeed, our Conservative government has reduced the tax burden on the average Canadian family of 4 by $3,000 over the last 5 years. That is a record I am very proud of!

■ How do you/your party propose to support families, particularly given the impacts of the recent economic recession? Rescuing Canadian’s from Harper’s biggest-ever Canadian deficit and getting public finances under control goes hand-in-hand with responsible

■ How do you/your party propose to support families, particularly given the impacts of the recent economic recession? Jack Layton and the NDP have tabled a bill to restore accountability to the credit card industry by giving cardholders the information they need to make decisions about their own credit.

Fraser Valley set for ‘robust’ growth in 2011

BRIAN MORTON Vancouver Sun

G

rowing confidence in the Fraser Valley’s industrial real estate market adds up to ‘robust’ growth in the sector this year, according to a report released recently. The report, which looked at Abbotsford, Surrey, Langley, and Chilliwack, concluded that while rent levels throughout the Fraser Valley industrial zones are starting to rise, overall vacancy levels continue to decline.

“With deal velocity and the pace of land sales in the Fraser Valley increasing, and rental rates facing upward pressure, early indications are pointing to an active industrial real estate market in 2011.” Indicative of the activity is a major new industrial park in Pitt Meadows — which recently opened its first building — that its developers say will eventually be the secondlargest industrial park in the province, after Richmond’s Kingswood Industrial Park. “We’re seeing a big change from ’09 and ’10 when things were fairly muted,” Avison Young broker Michael Farrell, who specializes in Fraser Valley industrial property sales and leasing, said in an interview of their report, its first “sub-market” report on Metro Vancouver industrial real estate released in 2011. The report followed an earlier 2010 year-end report focusing on the entire Metro Vancouver region that concluded there was a substantial increase in industrial real estate investment last year.

“Tenants are more confident and landlords are more willing to give inducements to allow those tenants to take on more space,” Farrell said of the latest report, called Avison Young’s Spring 2011 Fraser Valley, BC Industrial Report. According to the latest report, transaction volumes stabilized in 2010, setting the stage for 2011 growth. “With deal velocity and the pace of land sales in the Fraser Valley increasing, and rental rates facing upward pressure, early indications are pointing to an active industrial real estate market in 2011,” the report said. According to the report by Avison Young — a full-service commercial real estate company operating across Canada and the U.S. — Fraser Valley industrial real estate sale transactions and dollar volume in 2010 exceeded 2009 levels. Citing RealNet Canada, the report said that in 2010, the market witnessed 155 transactions with a total value of $194 million versus 146 transactions with a total value of $191 million in 2009 (148 transactions worth $219 million in 2008). It said activity in 2010 was moderated by a lack of available quality product. Although the report predicted “robust” 2011 growth, no specific dollar or percentage projections were included. However, it concluded that total Fraser Valley industrial real estate sale transactions from October 1, 2010 to March 31 (greater than $1 million) totalled $94.67 million. The report cited the Beedie Group as a “very active developer of large-bay industrial strata projects,” including recent buildings in Campbell Heights Business Park in Surrey and Tilbury Industrial Park in North Delta, both of

The new business centre is part of the new South Fraser Perimeter Road network of developments, connecting bridges with transportation infrastructure at ports in Vancouver and Delta as well as with trains. The efficiency, time and fuel consumption savings will be a huge benefit for tenants, Onni says. Middleton said that more than anything the new park represents Onni’s increased confidence in the B.C. economy. According to Onni, the new business centre hopes to cater to big businesses, like Canadian Tire and Target.

day. The PAC is hoping for a 90 per cent turn out. One parent for each of the approximately 500 students at Reimer can vote, said Stroszyn. Parents with children from feeder schools slated to attend Reimer next year will also be asked to vote. The vote is the result strong interest in uniforms by a number of parents, particularly

those who have emigrated from South Asia, said Stroszyn. “It’s the cultural heritage of a number of students that are attending the school,” she said. However, a variety of parents support the idea of uniforms for a number of reasons. “I wouldn’t be against it myself because it’s generally more cost-effective,” said Stroszyn, who has two children at Reimer. “[Wearing uniforms] also sends the message you are proud to be part of a school, and it increases a sense of

Still time for serious discussion K

im Campbell famously said an election was no time to discuss serious policy issues. Evidently the current crop of political leaders in Canada concurs. You would never know from listening to our leaders on the campaign trail that Canada is currently engaged in two military conflicts. More than 150 Canadian men and women have sacrificed their lives in Afghanistan over the last decade, and our leaders have nary a word to say about it. And now we have joined the fray in Libya. The intervention in Libya flows from the doctrine known as “the responsibility to protect” or R2P. When citizens are in danger from their own governments, the doctrine of R2P mandates that the international community should come to the rescue. The doctrine is well-intentioned, but it is not so easy to put into practice. Have we learned nothing from our experience in Afghanistan? Are there no lessons to be learned from the American experience in Iraq – a war that Stephen Harper and Michael Ignatieff both supported? Without reflecting on these experiences, the major parties – including the NDP – simply agreed to send our fighter jets into Libya. What are we to conclude? Will Canada always participate in military interventions when the United Nations invokes the R2P doctrine? If not, how will we decide when to participate and when to sit out? None of these questions are being asked in

HAMISH TELFORD

Be Our Guest this election. While Canada has acquitted itself well in Afghanistan, Canada has not performed well on other world stages. Last year, Canada failed to win a coveted seat on the United Nations Security Council. Just how far have we fallen? We lost the vote to Portugal. Forty years ago, Canada was the greatest peace-keeping nation in the world, and Portugal was a brutal colonial power in Africa. In the UN vote, the nations of the world, including most in Africa, voted for Portugal rather than Canada. What do our politicians plan to do to salvage Canada’s global reputation? Canada has similarly become an environmental pariah in the eyes of the world. The Chrétien government signed Canada onto the Kyoto Protocol on climate change, but it failed to follow through with any meaningful actions. Greenhouse gas emissions have continued to soar, and none of the traditional parties has a credible plan to bring them under control. The Green Party platform includes a massive carbon tax plan. It wants to raise about $34 billion per year in carbon taxation, with corresponding tax

reductions in other areas, primarily reductions in EI and CPP contributions. While many economists believe that putting a price on carbon is the most effective way to reduce green house gases, the Green Party has not spelled out in its platform how much more Canadians will have to pay for fossil fuels. So, how much tax will the Greens put on a litre of gasoline? And what do the other parties plan to do to tackle climate change? In fact, we need some straight talk from all parties on basic fiscal matters. Our leaders are promising us the world: they will balance the budget and preserve social programs without increasing personal taxes. It is not possible. We are rapidly approaching a point of no return. Either we make the necessary investments in our social programs, or they will gradually whither away. Or maybe the system of social programs built up in the last century is no longer sustainable. Maybe we need a smaller state with a low tax regime in order to compete in the global economy. Fine. But our politicians are leading us to believe that we can have it all. We can’t. We need a real debate on these issues, and we need real answers from our politicians. This is an election campaign after all. ■ Hamish Telford, head of UFV‘s political science department, specializes in Canadian politics.

hile both violent crime and crime in general continue to decline from year to year, the public’s perception that there is more crime and more violent crime continues to grow. It’s understandable. The media, in general, plays up violent crime and down plays any news when things get better. So, it’s no wonder that Stephen Harper continues to count on “tough on crime” sloganeering to gain support. After all, who wants to be seen to be pro-crime? We almost expected to see a rerun of the infamous Willie Horton campaign ad featured in the U.S. presidential election of 1988. Political history buffs may recall Horton was a convicted murderer allowed out on furlough who then raped a woman. Harper might have been tempted to use Allan Schoenborn as Canada’s Willie Horton. Schoenborn, who killed his three children in 2008, was set for escorted day passes before public outrage triggered a review. We suspect anyone promising to keep Schoenborn in his pyjamas for life would gain support. The Conservatives promise to increase sentences for those criminals we all detest: pedophiles, etc. And they also promise to have more drug testing in prisons. In fact, the Conservatives are all about prisons in their platform. But there is little or no mention of increasing policing or even following recommendations from police organizations. Voters deserve more than platforms intended to appeal to their fears. They deserve real reforms to the justice system that will put the victims of people like Schoenborn first, and they also need politicians to listen to those who are on the street fighting crime.

Here’s hoping for the leader we deserve Editor, the Times:

We have an overwhelming problem with this election. While we are fortunate to be able to vote, who do we vote for? Everyone of the candidates does nothing but bad mouth the other three and we should have a fifth candidate for the Green Party but even though they got almost as many votes as the Bloc (who has 49 seats in the House of Commons) they don’t even have one seat! We need to change the Constitution, or house representation as Bill C12 touted. It’s tough for seniors to decide how to vote, but imagine how hard it is for young people who have just reached the voting age. They must be thoroughly disgusted listening to all the barbs being tossed from one politician to another. They behave like kindergarten children, and it’s about time they started using common sense and started thinking about all Canadians and not of themselves. We have a beautiful

country now lets hope we get a good leader. Marilyn Alexander Abbotsford

Conservatives are Canada’s best choice Editor, the Times:

I find the ranting, raving and arrogance of Michael Ignatieff somewhat difficult to swallow. Both he and the Liberal Party of Canada have only one objective and that is to become government once again, and they will do anything to achieve that end. That has been proven by their previously failed attempt to form a coalition by getting the other opposition parties to come along side. We do not know what commitments were made to try and bring that about, but this clearly shows the Liberal Party will do anything to get back into power. They make much ado using the invented phrase “contempt of parliament” while brushing aside their own total contempt of the citizens of Canada as proven by the sponsorship

scandal – a subject that they will do everything in their power to avoid. The Liberal Party of Canada cares nothing for individual Canadians and I trust all Canadians will see through their smoke screen. I do not in any way claim that the Honourable Steven Harper and his Conservative party are or have been doing a perfect job, as we have no concept of perfection in this world. Undoubtedly mistakes have and are being made, but there is absolutely nothing that could compare with the sponsorship scandal. The Conservative government has done much to restore the economy and keep taxes in line and have shown great – not perfect – integrity in doing so. They deserve a chance to govern, and to achieve that end all Canadian voters need to support them and

give them a majority. Having stated this I must say that I would normally wish for a strong opposition, but considering the actions of the other parties under the veiled leadership of Michael Ignatieff and his predecessor in trying to form a coalition to defeat the Conservatives, the other parties have shown Canadians they will not work with or support the party that has been given the support of Canadians. While the United States system of government is far from perfect, they do have one thing that is right, and that is fixed elections every four years. The two parties are forced to work together for a fixed period in the interest of the citizens. Michael Ignatieff and the Liberal Party of Canada, as well as the other opposition parties, know the high cost of this election and they should focus

their attention on supporting our government rather than doing all in their power to destroy it. Considering the record of past Liberal governments, they should never again have the opportunity to form a government in this country. Frank Wirrell Abbotsford

Conservative support in a nutshell Editor, the Times:I’m vot-

ing Conservative this election because a vote for the Conservatives is a vote for lower taxes, stiffer sentences for repeat and violent offenders, an end to taxpayers being forced to foot the bill for political parties, and hopefully, an end to the draconian long gun registry. Even if the Conservatives accomplish none of the aforementioned things, the fact they have already purchased new military helicopters for our ground forces, and are planning to purchase the stealth F35 fighter bombers is in and of itself reason enough for me to vote Conserva-

tive in this election. If we send brave young men and women into battle they deserve to be provided with the very best in technology and firepower that we can afford to give them. Everything else pales in comparison. Gary Tupper New Westminster

Another Moose call for the AESC Editor, the Times:

There has been a lot of talk about how the Heat are loosing money and how council is refusing to tell the people of Abbotsford the true cost of running AESC. Here is a proposal with all the talk about Winnipeg getting a NHL team. Buy the Heat owner out. Give him whatever deal is needed to get rid of the Calgary farm team. Once that is done, bring the Moose to Abbotsford. This city will support them hands down. Corporate sponsorships will go up thus the people will no longer have to support a money-losing cause. Dohm suggested Lemna could have dealt with Disbrow in a more appropriate manner, such as moving her into the back of a police car. However, the tapping motion Lemna used with his foot to successfully quiet Disbrow “cannot be said to be excessive,” he said. Dohm stressed the officer who mentioned the incident to her superiors had taken the correct action and should not be the subject of any criticism. Lemna, who has served with the APD for more than 20 years, is also one of two officers facing a public hearing by the Office of the Police Complaint Commissioner (OPCC). The hearing will examine if Lemna and Const. Daryle Young committed an abuse of authority during an arrest Oct. 9, 2009 that was videotaped and later posted on YouTube.

belonging.” The Abbotsford board of education recently reduced the percentage of votes that a school needs to adopt uniforms. Schools making the change must hold a referendum on the issue. The board now requires that 66 per cent parent approval is necessary, down from 75 per cent in the past. The board stated it lowered the threshold due to growing parent interest in school uniforms in schools, particularly in the west of the district. A number of Abbotsford traditional and private schools have uniforms, but Harry Sayers Elementary is the only public school in the district to already have a

dress code in place. Principal Jim Hardington says the dress code – dark blue pants, a white collared shirt and plain blue sweater or hoodie – was implemented in 2003 and parents love it. “It just puts everyone on a level playing field,” said Hardington. “It eliminates some of the socioeconomic hierarchy out there.” Stroszyn said that if voter turnout at Reimer isn’t as high as desired, parents would be contacted by phone in coming weeks. ◗ One parent for each student who wants vote on whether to implement a uniform at Eugene Reimer can attend the school at 3433 Firhill Drive from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 27.

umas Prairie was not awash with springtime colour as was hoped when Minister of Agriculture Don McRae paid a visit to the tulip fields at Nick Warmerdam’s Flora Farms Wednesday. “Tulips are symbolic of new beginnings and they remind us that the beautiful spring weather we’re known for in B.C. is indeed finally here,” said McRae. That statement may be a bit premature, as cold, rainy weather, mixed with snow continues to blanket the Fraser Valley and those tight tulip buds won’t be opening until warmer weather arrives in about two weeks said Warmerdam. The ag minister was in Abbotsford to trumpet the tulip industry, with B.C. being the largest producer of cut tulips and bulbs in Canada. Tulip market sales account for more than a quarter of B.C.’s entire cut flower industry (21 million tulip stems were hand harvested in 2009), and contributed to nearly $41 million to the provincial economy in 2009.

Nick Warmerdam, owner of Flora Farms on Sumas Prairie, left, chats with Minister of Agriculture Don McRae last week. The field tulip season is only three to four weeks long, and tulip farmers like Warmerdam are busy harvesting the closed flower stems and shipping their products throughout B.C. and also stateside. Local retailers are also carrying many varieties of local tulips just in time for the Easter weekend.

B.C. Classic & Custom Car Show SHOW, from page B5 of the weekend when he chops the roof on a 1948 Ford Businessman’s Coupe as part of another new feature for 2011, the ‘Custom Car Classroom’. If you’re a custom car enthusiast you won’t want to miss this excellent opportunity to learn from a master craftsman. Brett, George and Gene will be appearing at the show all weekend, Friday through Sunday signing autographs and posing for photos with fans. Once again we are pleased to have The Electric Garage on board as the official Auction House of the BC Classic & Custom Car Show. These guys have a solid reputation for hosting first class Collector Car Auctions throughout western Canada and we are confident that their auction will be, once again, a big success and a great addition to the show. So if you’re looking to buy or sell a Classic or Custom car you will want to register early at www.theelectricgarage.com as their previous auctions have proven to be extremely popular. Our ‘Fuel & Fire’ event continues to be a big hit with race fans and thanks to our sponsor, Lordco Auto Parts and Eagle Motorplex, it’s been expanded to two nights featuring more Nitromethane powered ‘Fuelers’ than ever before! We’ve got Nitro Dragsters, Funny Cars and Fuel Altereds all firing up their 3500+ horsepower engines thrilling the fans with their ‘Thunder In The Pipes’ in what can only be described as Nitro Madness! And as if that’s not enough, Team Fire 4 Hire and their Jet engine powered Funny Cars and Dragsters will be competing in a Burner Bang Shootout, generating 30’ long flames from their afterburners, in an awesome display of raw power that you’ll just have to see to believe. Catch all the action Friday and Saturday night starting at 8 p.m. Continuing with our live motorsport dem-

onstrations, the Westwood Karting Association will once again be staging an exhibition race featuring the Shifter Karts on Saturday and Sunday. These exciting pocket rockets can reach speeds up to 75 mph and will have you on the edge of your seat as their drivers battle it out in wheel-to-wheel action on the mini-roadcourse. Don’t forget to bring your camera, because you’re going to want to get a shot with the beautiful Hot Rod Hotties! (visit their website at www.hotrodhotties.ca). Thanks to their sponsor Hot Rod’s Restos, the entire team of eight motorsport models will be on site at the show handing out hero cards, signing autographs and posing for photos with fans. You can also hook up with friends at the beer gardens and enjoy live entertainment on the Rock 101 / A&W stage with classic rock provided by our house band ‘Hamilton Harvey’, a guest appearance by contemporary rock artists ‘Rhythmfysh’ along with a very special encore performance by Canadian Idol finalist and CMT recording artist, Karen Lee Batten courtesy of JR Country. And while you’re at the show make sure to drop by the Rock 101 booth and say hello to B.C.’s number one radio personality ‘Brother Jake’, who will be broadcasting live, on location Saturday, April 30 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. See it all, ONLY at the BC Classic & Custom Car Show. It’s ‘Cars, Stars & Guitars!’ Friday through Sunday April 29 to May 1 at the Tradex Convention Centre in Abbotsford. Show times are Friday 5- 10 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tickets are available at the door - $17 for adults, $15 for Seniors, $8 for youth 6-12 years old and free for kids 5 and under. Also available are 2 day Adult passes for $30 and 3 day Adult weekend passes for $40. Indeed, Canada was recently been referred to as an “economic super star”. Without a growing, dynamic economy, we will not have the financial resources necessary to address some of the other pressing issues such as health care, homelessness, education and the environment. B) See above.

Liberals will bring economic stability to Canadian families by helping them with the cost of higher education—post-secondary students who get into university receive $4,000 over four years, or $6,000 per over four years for low-income families. A new Liberal government will bring a renewed commitment to the Canada Health Act. Lions rugby pride roars Yale senior boys team wins three last week

Abbotsford uses the homerun in four-game split

B

CAM TUCKER camtuckertimes@gmail.com

T

he Yale Lions senior boys rugby team is on a roll these days, and to a man they’re hoping it continues right through to provincials. Easier said than done, of course. The Lions nipped off three wins last week, defeating cross-town rivals W.J. Mouat by a score of 31-19, then laying the boots to Semiahmoo 43-12 before travelling to the interior for a date against the No. 10-ranked Kelowna Senior Secondary squad. The Lions won that game too, and rather convincingly at 42-12. Not bad for a team that isn’t even seeded among the Top 10 teams in B.C. “We’re playing better every single game,” said head coach Doug Primrose. “For us, the Mouat game was a bit ugly but we played well against [Semiahmoo] and Kelowna was a pretty tough opponent but that was the best we played all year.” Heading into what might be their toughest part of the schedule, the Lions believe their winning ways can persist. A Thursday match against the Robert Bateman Timberwolves, ranked No. 8 in B.C. as of Monday, will prove to be one of the Lions’ biggest tests of the season. But there’s more to this highly anticipated showdown than just a win. The Abbotsford Cup, given to the best local high school rugby team during the regular season, is up for grabs, which should add to what is already a fierce rivalry. “They’ve got a good, solid team,” said Primrose of Bateman.

– JEAN KONDA-WITTE/TIMES

Nathaniel Silva of the Yale Lions senior boys rugby team carries the ball during Thursday’s match against Semiahmoo Senior Secondary at Yale Secondary in Abbotsford. Silva scored one try, as the Lions rumbled their way to a 43-12 victory. “It’s usually a good rivalry because the two schools are so close together and we beat them last year quite handily so I’m sure they’ll be looking for some revenge.” The Lions won the Abbotsford Cup last year, and are on the verge of a repeat. The only thing standing in their way is Bateman. “It should be a good game,” said the coach. Looking further ahead, the Lions face Earl Marriott one

week from today. The Lions should be motivated for that match, especially since Marriott knocked off Yale in the Fraser Valley championships last year in the lead up to the B.C. tournament in Abbotsford. Consider the impending rematch just another obstacle on the road to what Primrose expects should be a top four or five finish at the 2011 B.C. High School Rugby Championship, once again to be held in Abbotsford.

The road to riches is far more grueling than it sounds, however. Last year it was injuries that riddled down the Lions, who had to settle for an eighth place finish after losing to – of all teams – Robert Bateman by a score of 18-11. By the time the tournament was over, seven starters from the Lions squad had been forced to the sidelines with injuries. Primrose is hoping for bet-

ter fortune in 2011. “Depth is always an issue if we get into injury trouble, but if we stay healthy there’s no reason why we couldn’t compete with the top teams in the province,” he said. But for right now, there’s a little matter of getting past Robert Bateman with hometown bragging rights on the line. randon Todoruk and Gabe Gomez offered a glimpse into the calibre of offence the Abbotsford Cardinals are truly capable of this season. Both hit their first homeruns of the season over the weekend, as the Cardinals split their four-game weekend schedule against two tough opponents in the Nanaimo Pirates and Vancouver Cannons. Todoruk, who led the B.C. Junior Premier Baseball League in six offensive categories last season, blasted a three-run shot in a 5-3 win Saturday over the Pirates. Gomez followed that up the next day as he belted his first long ball of the season in Sunday’s 1-0 win over the Vancouver Cannons. He joined Todoruk, and 10 others in the B.C. Premier Baseball League to record a homerun early in the 2011 season. Gomez followed up his blast just a few hours later, smacking in three runs in what turned out to be an 8-5 loss in the back half of Sunday’s double-header against Vancouver. Ty l e r D o b o s a l s o h a d a standout weekend for Abbotsford, as he pitched a one-hit shutout on Sunday against Vancouver. The results from this weekend give the Cardinals four wins on the season. They currently sit 10th in the BCPBL with a 4-7 record, but are just 4.5 games back of the first place Parksville Royals. Abbotsford completes its five-game homestand tonight against the Fraser Valley Chiefs, beginning at 7 p.m. at DeLair Park. – CAM TUCKER/TIMES HTTP://TWITTER.COM/CAMABBYTIMES

Slaying the dragon

S

udden Impact paddlers from Abbotsford and Chilliwack proved they were a force to be reckoned with at the Deep Cove Dash for Charity dragon boat sprints in North Vancouver on April 16. The youth team, Liquid Silver, made it to the mixed C final, where they captured the bronze medal with a time of 1:03.20. “We had an awesome first regatta,” said team leader Emma Graham. “We worked well together as a team and went out and proved that we can beat adult teams and give them a good race. Being the only junior team there, we made a name for ourselves.” Sister team Blue Impact had the race of their lives, just nipping Liquid Silver at the line to grab the silver medal with a time of 1:02.95.

“I’m very proud of how my team did,” said captain Neena Hill of Blue Impact. “It’s a good start to the season and we have room for improvement.” Sudden Impact Black paddled hard to a first place finish in the Consolation A final, with a time of 59.48. “This event proved to be an excellent start to an exciting season for this crew,” said Pam Jones. “With some [new] players on the roster, the four races allowed the team to work on their race strategy and come together to work as one. There was some excellent competition on the water and S.I. Black proved themselves ready, coming in fifth overall.”

Demand for Graphic Design Technology Specialists

A19

Spurs New CDI College Program Abbotsford program prepares grads to use advanced design software Technologies used in the graphic design industry have become increasingly complex over the past several decades. With new design software emerging all the time, employers are demanding specialists who can stay on top of trends and technologies. CDI College’s Graphic Design Technology Specialist program trains students to become experts with industrystandard software like Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, Fireworks, and After Effects at its Abbotsford campus. It teaches students to use industry-standard design software applications, create digital images, and develop editing and processing skills. Students become experts in using technology to digitally manipulate photos, layout designs with QuarkXpress and Adobe InDesign, create website prototypes and application interfaces, and produce interactive digital media projects, including motion graphics. Students in this program are trained for roles in multimedia and digital support, such as visual information/ multimedia specialists,

web and graphic design specialists, design software specialists, or other roles in the digital media and graphics field. “CDI College continues to meet the increased demand for skills-based training in British Columbia,” says Dr.Bohdan Bilan, Vice President of Academics for CDI College. “This program was developed with input from professionals within the graphic design and multimedia industries, which means our students learn to master the most relevant tools, techniques and technologies used in the job market today.” A variety of employers are seeking employees with specialized expertise who can bring their unique perspective to all digital design projects, who are good at multi-tasking, and who have strong problem-solving skills within and across applications. CDI College’s Graphic Design Technology Specialist diploma program graduates excel in all of these areas. “This program meets the demands of the growing multimedia design industry in British Columbia and across Canada,” says Randy Cox, President and CEO, CDI College. “Increasingly, employers are demanding workers who have the specialized software skills this program teaches.” CDI College offers the Graphic Design Technology Specialist program at its Surrey and Abbotsford campuses. These two communities are both growing rapidly and offer expanding employment opportunities in a number of fields. Both are close to the hustle and bustle of Vancouver, but provide a

quieter alternative to the big city. CDI College’s Surrey and Abbotsford campuses are easily accessible by the public transit system or by car. CDI College is Canada’s largest career training institute with 19 campuses in five provinces across the country. For more than 40 years, CDI College has been a leading career training institution helping thousands of students achieve career goals and aspirations. The college offers dozens of specialized diploma programs in the fields of business, technology and health care, which feature realworld training from experienced instructors, small class sizes, flexible schedules and career placement assistance. Programs are created with industry input, ensuring curricula is current, relevant and practical. Are you interested in building a career in multimedia and digital support? Pet Commandments

1. My life is likely to last 10-15 years. Any separation from you will be very painful. 2. Give me time to understand what you want from me. 3. Place your trust in me – it's crucial for my well-being. 4. Don't be angry with me for long, and don't lock me up as punishment. You have your work, friends, entertainment. I HAVE ONLY YOU! 5. Talk to me. Even if I don't understand your words, I understand your voice. 6. Be aware that however you treat me, I'll NEVER forget it.

From here. To career. The Shortest Path To Your Health Care Career

7. Before you hit me, remember I have teeth that could easily crush the bones in your hand, but I choose not to bite you. 8. Before you scold me for being lazy or uncooperative, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I'm not getting the right food, or my heart may be getting old and weak. 9. Take care of me when I get old. You, too, will grow old. 10. Go with me on difficult journeys. Everything is easier for ME if you are there. Remember, I love you.

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
