A 44-year-old Burnaby man was among eight people arrested recently after the RCMP’s federal drug enforcement branch conducted an investigation that also led to the seizure of tons of dangerous chemicals, a large amount of cash and three cars. On April 4, the RCMP’s Greater Vancouver drug section, with the assistance of members of the Burnaby and Surrey RCMP, searched six Lower Mainland homes. During the investigation, police seized $250,000 in cash, three cars, approximately 20 kilograms of cocaine, one kilogram of methamphetFor a video of amine, two kilowhat police grams of mariseized, go to juana, two tons www.burnabynow.com of a highly toxic, highly flammable, extremely corrosive chemical which could be used for the production of ecstasy and a large pill press. Police also found other dangerous chemicals stored in an East Vancouver home near a local restaurant. Among the eight arrested were three men on federal parole, including the 44-year-old Burnaby man. He, along with the other two parolees, has since been returned to prison. The eight people arrested in this investigation will likely be facing new charges for offences under the controlled drugs and substances act. The police are continuing their investigation to determine the scope of operations for this group from both a geographic and volume perspective. Translating wishes into action ‘Hope Letters is in the business of hope raising’ Jennifer Moreau staff reporter

Like countless others around the world, former Burnaby resident David Chan was deeply moved by the devestating earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan last month. As messages of consolation came pouring in online from across the globe, Chan realized something: most were written in English. People were reaching out to the Japanese victims, but their messages weren’t getting through. That’s when he came up with Hope

Letters, a project where people send wellwishes to earthquake survivors, and volunteers translate the sentiments into Japanese and distribute them on the ground. While the letters may not fix a crumbled home or provide medical care, they are empathic expressions of caring at a time of great emotional upheaval. “I can help by donating money, or I can go through relief work, but both of them, it’s a different nature,” Chan says. “Hope Letters is in the business of hope raising. It’s not to do with money, it’s not to do with basic supplies – it’s to raise hope.” And besides, not everyone can donate money, especially children and teens. Hope Letters gives them a way to reach out regardless, he says.

Chan set up a website, www.hopeletters.org, and he’s recruited about 50 volunteers from across Canada and the U.S., mostly through social media. Anyone can write a letter and submit it online, and volunteers will translate them into Japanese. The notes will be sent abroad for distribution through a network of volunteers – mostly English teachers in Japan’s public schools, who can share them with their students. Roughly 3,000 letters have been collected so far, Chan says. Volunteers in Japan can also print batches of letters for distribution to people in evacuation centres. “For the students, many have relocated Letters Page 8

LAST BINGO HALL IN CITY

Under the c for closed

Patron recalls days when the bingo hall on Kingsway was packed Janaya Fuller-Evans staff reporter

It was the playground of Burnaby’s over-50 set. Burnaby’s last bingo hall, which opened in 1999, has closed down and at least one former patron considers it a major loss. “It was a sad day when they closed it down,” said Sandy Chartier, who was a regular at the hall for years. “It’s a big letdown.” For Chartier and her husband, Boardwalk Gaming Centre was not just a place to play bingo, but a big part of their social life. “The sad thing about it is, you don’t see your friends anymore,” she said in a phone interview. They didn’t exchange phone numbers, she explained, or visit each other’s homes. They met at the hall. “It was a fun time,” Chartier said. Chartier hadn’t been to the hall in about a year, she said. “We all knew each other,” she said. “I don’t see them anymore.” Things slowed down after the Blue Boy machines – small computers for choosing bingo numbers and types of games – were removed and the hall went back to paper cards, Chartier added. But it was packed in the 550capacity hall when the machines were available, the Metrotown resident said, and she often had to go at 3 p.m. to play a 6 p.m. game. “People were being turned away from it,” she said. She used to go two to three times a week, Chartier added. When she heard that economic conditions, and factors such as the smoking ban were listed as reasons behind the closure, she disagreed. “Every seat was packed,” Chartier said, adding that when the computers were removed, “people stopped Bingo Page 5

Cash machines set for city sites The city is moving forward with an ATM pilot project at city hall. After receiving requests for an automated teller machine to be installed at city facilities for about 15 years, the city is moving forward with a pilot project in three locations. The proposed locations are the Bonsor Recreation Complex, the Shadbolt Centre

for the Arts and city hall, because each is a high-traffic facility, according to a report from the finance department. The city plans to install independently owned and operated ATM units at these locations for a minimum of three months. If the project is deemed a successful revenue generator, it could be expanded to other facilities.

Volunteers have to pack and seal all the casserole dishes before they can be shipped. What makes the meals unique is that they can be shipped anywhere in the world, and different cultures can add different flavours to the meal. For example, the Japanese recipients of the packages can add wasabi or soya sauce to create a more traditional Japanese meal. Last November, EA helped package enough meal packets to feed 42,000 people, but for that initiative, it was to help local Lower Mainland communities. When the earthquake and tsunami hit Japan, some of EA’s employees had families impacted by the disaster.

“We have a lot of Asian employees and this was something all our employees wanted to contribute to,” said Harlow. While EA donated its gym space to the cause, employees gave their time to help pack the food. Shipping company AMJ Campbell has stepped forward to take care of the shipping and if all goes well, the food will be in Japan by the end of April. “Our hearts go out to the people of Japan,” said Harlow. “It could easily have been us if an earthquake hit the Lower Mainland. ... Not only did our employees come out to help, they brought their wives and kids to help too.” By Alfie Lau, staff reporter twitter.com/AlfieLau

going.” She wrote to the B.C. Lottery Corporation about it, she said, but never received a response. The place was especially busy during the holidays, and was able to charge $100 for tickets for New Year’s events, according to Chartier. The hall, which closed in March, is being replaced by Club 16, the fitness club co-owned by Trevor Linden. Chartier feels this is a poor fit for the HighGate neighbourhood, as seniors in the area won’t go there instead of the bingo hall. “What do these pensioners do?” she said. Some bought condos above the bingo hall after it moved from Middlegate to HighGate in 2004, she said, and no longer have the community connection in their area. Burnaby is full of sports clubs and fitness centres, Chartier said, but there are few places seniors can go to enjoy themselves. There are no other bingo halls in Burnaby, and haven’t been for 10 years, according to Tasha Schollen, public affairs officer for the Ministry of Public Safety and the Solicitor General. The information comes from the B.C. Lottery Corporation, which monitors bingo halls in the province, she stated. Boardwalk Gaming and Entertainment did not respond to repeated phone calls and emails about the reasons for the closure before press time this week.

to decide what they’d like to do with the opportunities presented by all those political fishing expeditions heading their way on May 2. But first, let’s throw out all the red herrings mixed up in this exercise. First there are the “contempt” charges, which appear to carry a lot of ominous weight, but in political terms, they really mean that the government did not follow process appropriately – and angered Members of Parliament. Even redder is the budget herring

– obviously formulated for an election call, it has nothing to do with the real world. A post-election budget will be the real thing. Another red herring is swimming about in a supposed “coalition.” Coalition is not a dirty word. On the contrary, when a coalition does form, it’s just parliamentary democracy working as it should. Finally, it doesn’t matter “who caused the election.” It’s happening, and it’s an opportunity, a duty and a responsibility. We need to take it seriously.

oday we’re going to talk about xenarthrans. No, xenarthrans aren’t the aliens that told L. Ron Hubbard to start a celebrity-ensnaring scam church. Nor does it refer to a new group of erectile dysfunction drugs. It’s a clade, a large group of living things that share a common ancestry. Everyone knows that humans are classed among the great apes (chimpanzees, bonobos, gorillas, orangutans) and the primates (apes, monkeys). Then we’re more distantly related to groups like bats, shrews, rodents, various hoofed animals, bears and so on. Xenarthrans are about the most distantly related group of mammals there is. The next branch of our family tree bears the marsupials, like the opossum or the kangaroo. But most of us can name the three groups of xenarthrans off the top of our heads: anteaters, sloths and armadillos. The modern animals are all pretty interesting, but let’s take a quick look back in time. The

whole clade probably split off from the rest of the mammals around 60 million years ago, while the dinosaurs were a notso-distant memory, at least on a geological timescale. They mostly developed on their own in South America, where the ancestors of animals we know so well from the old world (elephants, deer, horses, and carnivores like canines, bears, and cats) didn’t get a foothold. Then, three million years ago or thereabouts, Central America slammed into South America, a big ongoing collision brought to you courtesy of continental drift. Animals started wandering back and forth, including xenarthrans. Those travellers include giant ground sloths the size of elephants, and glyptodontids, armoured relatives of armadillos, about the size and shape of a Volkswagen Beetle. They came complete with a giant spiky tail club, suitable for crushing the skulls of sabre-toothed cats. There were also extinct sloth relatives that had evolved to live in the oceans. They resembled vegetarian seals, with paddlelike arms and teeth designed to munch on kelp or other underwater plants. Sadly, the really big species died out over the last few thousand years. The last ground sloths may have gone extinct just 500 years ago in the Caribbean.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR An unintended vote for the Bloc? Dear Editor:

Are coalitions good or bad? I say, it all depends on which parties are involved. Would you vote for the NDP or the Liberals if you knew that the only way they could form a government would be to include the Bloc Québécois in a coalition? Current polls suggest that the election is not likely to result in much change in the standings in Parliament. All four parties will keep roughly same share of seats as they did before the election. If that turns out to be true, the parties currently in opposition – the NDP, the Liberals and the Bloc – will attempt to govern by forming a coalition. Without the cooperation of the Bloc, the NDP and Liberals

cannot command a majority in Parliament. What do you think the Bloc will want in return for helping an NDP-Liberal coalition? The Bloc has demonstrated that it only cares for one province. It doesn’t take much imagination to predict that the Bloc would hold any Liberal-NDP coalition hostage to their demands. Thus, a vote for the NDP is really a vote for the Bloc Québécois. untapped green energy sources B.C. has. With massive wind, solar, biomass, geothermal, wave and tidal energy potential, on top of the province’s considerable hydroelectric resources, B.C. really is the energy envy of the world. B.C. now has a couple of operational wind farms, with more due to come on line over the next couple of years. But it was only very recently that B.C.’s considerable wind energy potential was finally tapped into. Biomass energy is also poised to contribute significantly to B.C.’s green energy supply. And B.C.’s potential for solar, wave and tidal energy are also being explored seriously. But what about geothermal energy? B.C. has Canada’s greatest potential for geothermal energy due to its location along the Pacific Rim ring of fire. Numerous hot springs around the province attest to B.C.’s geothermal potential. B.C.’s hydroelectric potential is a great and wonderful thing, and there is more of it than can ever be used to meet B.C.’s own needs. But let’s not forget about the rest of B.C.’s massive and equally wonderful green energy potential. South of the border, the Americans are already tapping geothermal energy along their west coast and producing a considerable amount of electricity. Why not B.C., too? Donald Leung, Burnaby

Don’t blame the city

Dear Editor:

Re: Mayor is failing on homelessness, Burnaby NOW, March 5. While no one can disagree with G. Bruce Friesen that it’s a disgrace to live in such a wealthy country and still have people who are homeless, it’s important to remember that helping those who are homeless and at risk of homelessness remains the responsibility of senior governments. The feds downloaded some of this responsibility to the provinces (with no additional funding), and this province, through its limited action, is “downloading” that responsibility to municipal governments. Here’s the thing – municipal governments only get about eight cents of every tax dollar collected, and they are required by statute to balance their budgets. With that paltry amount, municipalities have to deliver those services that affect us most on a daily basis: water, sewer, garbage, roads, police and fire departments and more. So if Mayor Corrigan and council are refusing to allow the province to “download” the cost of care for people who are homeless, I say good on them and thank you for looking after Burnaby’s interests. Like Mr. Friesen and most other Burnaby residents, I too am concerned about the lack of help for Burnaby’s most needy residents. But let’s direct our criticism where it belongs – to our member of the legislative assembly and his cabinet. Peter Cech, Burnaby

Which may mean that some early European explorers actually laid eyes on them. And then probably shot and ate them. Their modern relatives still have some odd tricks up their sleeves. Giant anteaters are the size of large dogs (professional artist/weirdo Salvador Dali actually had one as a pet and took it for walks on a leash – brave considering their massive claws evolved to cut through concrete-like termite mounds) with fur patterned in striking

grey, brown, black, and white streaks. They subsist entirely on insects, scooped up with a long sticky tongue. They have some treedwelling relatives called tamanduas, with soft brown and white patterned fur. They’re so adorable I’m shocked Disney hasn’t turned them into a seven-movie animated franchise and animatronic ride. Several species of armadillos only give birth to identical quadruplets. And despite their reputation for being found dead at

the side of the road, the nine-banded armadillo has managed to expand its range from Texas all the way through the southern U.S. to Florida over the past 100 years. The more I learn about these animals, the more I get that pleasant sense of wonder feeling. I love that the world still has living things in it that can show me the strangeness that life and evolution have produced. across Japan. They may have lost family. As kids, that’s a real shock to know their hometowns are gone,” Chan says. “They may wonder what’s next for them.” Chan got two local high schools onboard, Burnaby Mountain and Burnaby Central, with dozens of students participating. Grade 10 student Kayla Jeong is studying Japanese at Burnaby Mountain and participated in the letter-writing project. “I thought it was pretty nice, since I heard a lot of people in Japan were under emotional distress, as well as physical stress,” she says. For her letter, she sent a message of hope. “I wished the person that’s reading well and that us people who are here in Canada are also praying for them and for them not to give up hope,” she says. For Kayla, the project allowed her to help without donating money.

“I felt it was a really good way of putting a personal thing into this entire project, so it made me feel really good inside,” she says. “I think that the people in Japan that are in shelters right now mostly need physical help, but being here and not being able to help that much, expect for donating money, this is the most that we can do, give them emotional strength, knowing that someone else out there is wishing the best for them. I think if it were me, it would make my worries seem a little lighter.” Chan has not received any direct feedback yet from Japanese recipients, but he has heard from his volunteers. “They have told me that Japan traditionally has a very insular culture, and many students are wondering: Does the world know and care about us?” he says. “They’ve said these letters are very much needed because the students are trying to figure out what the world is thinking.” For more information, or to write your own letter, go to www.hopeletters.org.

Torn: Ken Low, Liberal candidate for Burnaby Douglas, is upset that his campaign signs were trashed recently.

Politics or vandalism? Jennifer Moreau staff reporter

Liberal candidate Ken Low is upset that some of his campaign signs have been torn down, and he’s questioning whether it was a politically motivated attack or simple vandalism. Low is running in the Burnaby Douglas riding for the May 2 federal election. He

had about 10 campaign signs along the Burnaby side of Boundary Road, just north of Kingsway. Apparently on Monday evening, someone had wrecked, torn down or knocked over all of them, and some were tossed in the road. “I was pretty disappointed,” Low said, adding he doesn’t know if it’s a partisan Vandalism Page 11

attack or simple vandalism. Low’s volunteers reported that NDP and Conservative signs in the area were left intact. “We do not know who tore down the signs, and our campaign is not accusing any individual or group,” Low said. “Whether or not the individuals who destroyed my signs are officially or unofficially associated to one of my opponents isn’t that important. I would hope that my opponents (Conservative) Ronald Leung and (New Democrat) Kennedy Stewart would agree that this behaviour is despicable and uncalled for.” Nick Kvenich is working with Leung’s campaign, and he said that in any given election, one can expect to lose about 10 per cent of campaign signs. Leung’s campaign has seen about half a dozen signs

vandalized. “I feel sorry for Ken Low, but there’s obviously someone that doesn’t like the Liberals. But more than likely, it’s kids trying to have some fun,” Kvenich said. Election signs get stolen because people use the wire frames in their gardens or the wooden posts for building, he added. He also pointed out that the City of Burnaby has prohibited election signs on public property and will remove them. “We know we’re not supposed to put signs there,” Kvenich said. But Low said that his signs were on private property. Most were attached to the fences of homes on Boundary, and that the residents gave permission to post the signs. Ken Low’s campaign members are trying to replace the signs as quickly as possible.

Candidates’ meeting set The Iranian Canadian Congress of Western Canada is holding a Burnaby-New Westminster all candidates’ meeting at the Cameron rec centre on April 30. “We’re trying to mobilize our community as a minority,” said Sherry Shaghaghi, chair

of the congress. “There’s a ton of Iranians in that area in Burnaby-New Westminster.” The meeting is Saturday, April 30 at 4 p.m. The centre is at 9523 Cameron St. All are welcome to attend, and there will be an interpreter available. Candidates will get to

talk for 2.5 minutes each, followed by a question and answer period. Seating is limited to 75 people. Shaghaghi said the congress is hoping to get more people from the Persian and Iranian community well-informed and out to vote. editorial@burnabynow.com

Indoor cycling track is attracting top athletes Membership with the Burnaby Velodrome Club has increased steadily in the past decade since the indoor cycling track was put in at Harry Jerome Sports Centre, according to club president Scott Laliberte. This was one of the points in his presentation to council on April 4, updating the city on the club’s initiatives over the past few years. Started on an infrastructure grant, it is now a viable facility in the city, he said, adding that some of B.C.’s top athletes train there. Laliberte mentioned the club’s youth cycling program, for ages eight to 19, and the masters training for people ages 50 to 78, as well as coached and elite training at the facility. The track hosts Friday night racing and seasonal weekend racing, as well, Laliberte said. The 200-metre track hosted the Canadian National Track Championships on 2008 and 2009. The club’s four-day race is its marquee event, he said. The club is also working on an aboriginal youth program, Laliberte added, and a high school summer and hockey program. SECTION COORDINATOR Jennifer Moreau, 604-444-3021 jmoreau@burnabynow.com

Burnaby woman helps animals abroad Reporter Jennifer Moreau caught up with Joyce Gomes, who is collecting vet supplies to help animals overseas Jennifer Moreau: Please introduce yourself: Joyce Gomes: My name is Joyce Gomes. I have lived in Burnaby for about 40 years. After 37 years in federal civil service, I have recently retired. I am originally from Guyana in South America. For a number of years now I have been involved in animal welfare and rescue, primarily in Guyana. Moreau: What are you doing to help the animals? Gomes: Currently, I am collecting veterinary and non-prescription medical supplies, pet accessories and pet food from various sources. I ship these to Guyana and Trinidad and occasionally wire transfer cash to an animal activist to pay for having animals spayed, neutered and treated for the underprivileged pet owners. Moreau: Why are you doing this? Gomes: When I visited Guyana six years ago, I was appalled to see the abuse and suffering so many abandoned and neglected animals endure every day on the streets. The animals were suffering from malnutrition, infestation of fleas, ticks, mange and other infectious diseases, some of which can be transmitted to humans. Dogs are often observed with traumatic injuries including broken legs, hips or other traumatic injuries. There are packs of dogs wandering about the cities not being tended to, fed or cared for. Often they may become injured or diseased and may be left to die from their injuries. Moreau: What types of things do you send abroad? Gomes: I have sent used equipment such as surgical tables, ECG (electrocardiography) machines, surgical instruments, medical supplies such as sterile gloves, sutures, surgical tools and nonprescription medications. Needed items include dog and cat food, leashes and collars, shampoos, eye, ear and dental care items, wormers, vaccines, multivitamins, flea and tick control items – sprays and collars – and dog crates.

Larry Wright/burnaby now

Animal lover: Burnaby resident Joyce Gomes collects veterinarian supplies to help animals overseas. Moreau: Where do you get them from? Gomes: Extra donations from the Wildlife Rescue Association, various animal shelters in the Lower Mainland and medical supply companies. Moreau: Who do you send them to? Gomes: The supplies are shipped to Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago. In Trinidad and Tobago, a veterinarian named Dr. Raymond Deonanan has established a charitable organization to provide free veterinarian services in the poor, rural areas of Trinidad and Tobago. Dr. Deonanan also travels to Guyana two to three times a year to provide free vet services, largely spaying and neutering. In Guyana, I ship the medical supplies to Dr. Mark Pierre in order for him to provide as much low cost or free vet services as possible. The non-medical supplies are shipped to an animal activist, Syeada

Manbodh, who distributes them to poor animal owners. She also feeds and tends to strays on the streets and rescues animals. Moreau: Why is there no help for animals in Guyana and Trinidad? Gomes: Guyana is a very poor country, one of the poorest in the Western Hemisphere. Consequently, with a myriad of other social issues, animal welfare is a low priority. Horses and donkeys are still used as dray animals. These animals suffer from over use, over loading, neglect and abuse. Dogs are commonly physically abused by beatings, having scalding liquids thrown on them. There is an SPCA in Guyana, but they are under-funded and under-staffed and simply do not have the resources to deal with the magnitude of the problem. They have stated that their

mandate does not include dealing with stray dogs and cats. The various levels of government seem to be unable or unwilling to take the issue in hand because Guyana is a poor country and simply lacks the resources to deal with animal welfare issues. Moreau: Do you need anything from the community? Gomes: Anyone who wishes to contribute or would like to volunteer their time and expertise in veterinary care in Guyana may contact me at joyce.gomes@telus.net or 604-432-1563 for more information. The task at hand is really enormous. ◆ For more on this story, see Jennifer Moreau’s blog, Community Conversations at www.burn abynow.com. Warning: The images Joyce Gomes sent us of animal neglect are very disturbing.

Students confront stereotypes at Human Library day HERE & NOW

B

Jennifer Moreau

y the time you read this, it will already be over. But as I write this column, I have yet to visit Moscrop Secondary for a very inter-

esting project: the Human Library. I have been invited, along with a host of other local figures, to be a live “book.” What’s the Human Library, you ask? It’s a project that started in Norway in 2000, and Moscrop Secondary was the first high school in Canada to hold one. People act as live books, and readers can come “check them out” and chat face-to-face.

The library includes titles such as ex-convict, refugee, HIV positive, and transgendered. The idea is to dismantle stereotypes and prejudices by meeting real people that carry those labels. Each person can have more than one title. For instance, I’m billed as a journalist and feminist. (While I’m familiar with stereotypes about feminists, I’m not so sure what they are for journalists,

although I’m sure to find out!) The students have classroom discussions before they meet us, reviewing typical stereotypes associated with the titles, and they are encouraged to ask tough, uncomfortable and impolite questions. For this library there are more than 20 people on loan, each of us with our own station. You may recognize

some of the characters. Local MLA Kathy Corrigan has billed herself as the “desk-thumping politician.” Marilyn Rushton, whom I’ve interviewed for this paper, is listed as blind from birth, teacher and musician. An interesting title that caught my eye was Jim Mandelin, ex gang member, recovering addict and alcoholic and former bully, whose father was

in the infamous Ku Klux Klan. The Moscrop Human Library is Thursday, April 14, and I will be writing about the experience for an upcoming feature. There are hundreds of students coming through the library doors all day, and I hear they are very excited to check us out. Keep an eye on upcoming editions of the Burnaby NOW for my full story. jmoreau@burnabynow.com

His first novel, Chanting Denied Shores, was published by Bayeux Arts in November 2010. Spring concert

Let There Be Music! That’s not just a random outburst on my part, it’s actually the title of a concert – the Burnaby school district’s spring honour concert on Monday, May 2 at the Michael J. Fox Theatre at 7 p.m. The concert is set to coincide with the nationwide celebration of Music Monday, and it will feature all five school district honour choirs, including the Burnaby Children’s Choir, Burnaby Youth Choir and three handbell choirs – Pacific Ring, Sound Wave and Northern Spirit Ringers. Tickets are $5, and the concert is set to start at 7 p.m. Sadly, I can’t be there because there’s this whole federal election thing going on, and I’ll be on

election duty that night. I do, however, have two free tickets to offer up to anyone who’s interested. First person to email me (jmaclellan@burnaby now.com) with the subject line Let There Be Music will get the tickets!

EDMONDS EXPRESS XPRESS COMMUNITY DRIVEN NEWS FOR THE RESIDENTS & BUSINESSES OF BURNABY-EDMONDS

Spring clean-up

Learn something new Are you a budding artist? Have you always wanted to take up yoga or learn to ballroom dance? Whatever catches your fancy, Edmonds Community Centre has a variety of new options for the 55-and-up crowd this spring. Starting in May, you can enjoy a number of artistic courses - including Drawing: An Introduction with Betty Woo, starting May 4; and a ballroom

Theresa McManus EDMONDS EXPRESS Planning is underway for an event designed to spruce up Edmonds Street in time for spring. The Edmonds Business and Community Association's annual spring cleanup will take place on Saturday, May 7 starting at Gordon Presbyterian Church. The cleanup takes place each spring and fall. "We clean up Edmonds Street," said Ryan Meadows, the association's president. "It's to bring the community together. It's to clean up Edmonds, promote businesses." Volunteers are invited to help pick up garbage along Edmonds Street as part of the event. The event attracts community members of all ages, including local students and cadets. Cadets from Division 389c - the Florence Burwell Division - will be among those helping out on cleanup day. One of the group's focuses for 2011 is on community outreach, so they'll be participating in the cleanup, as it's a good way of giving back to the community. Burnaby firefighters get involved by providing a barbecue for participants. Anyone wanting to participate in the cleanup can meet at the church at 7457

dance class in merengue starting May 19. For those looking to get fit, there are a number of options: Stretch and Breathe, starting May 9; OsteoFit and Osteo fot Life, starting May 10; and Adapted Weight Training, for those with a wheelchair or mobility challenges, starting on May 7 and again on May 17. A Hatha Yoga course begins May 26. The centre also offers a

number of special events, such as Victoria's High Tea on May 18 and an Edmonds Entertainers Music Hall on May 11. There are a number of ongoing clubs and groups on offer as well, including a computer club, snooker games, carpet bowling, social dances, a needlework club and more. For more about the centre, call 604-525-1671 or stop by 7282 Kingsway.

CLEANUP TIME: Kevin Chung, left, and Nathan Chen, are cadets from Division 389c - the Florence Burwell Division, who will be among those helping participating in the May 7 spring cleanup in the Edmonds neighbourhood. PHOTO Theresa McManus Edmonds St. Registration is at 9:45 a.m., the cleanup runs from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., and the barbecue takes place at 12 p.m.

Getting fit with Trevor Janaya Fuller-Evans EDMONDS EXPRESS If you're looking to get fit in Edmonds, you can get a little help from a celebrity athlete. Former Vancouver Canuck Trevor Linden recently announced plans to open his second fitness club in HighGate Village. Linden and partner Chuck Lawson opened the first Club 16 - named for Linden's retired jersey number with the Canucks - in Coquitlam in February. The Burnaby location will be his second. Linden has a specific goal in mind: Making fitness more accessible to everyone. "I'm super passionate about fitness for all ages and all levels," Linden says, adding that the intention of Club 16 is to provide a comfortable, approachable atmosphere for people of every shape, size and fitness level. The Burnaby location, which is scheduled to open in June, is designed to include a She's Fit! club inside and a fitness gear retail space, as well. Linden, who is involved

Treat bulbs with care GREEN SCENE Anne Marrison

O

pportunities for planting never end in gardening, but summer-flowering bulbs are among the plants that may stay with us for many years – provided we store them properly over the winter. Among the most flamboyant are tuberous begonias. Most varieties have huge double camellia or rose-type blooms in reds, yellows, oranges, whites and pinks. One can choose plants with serrated-edge blooms or ruffled ones and upright or pendula growth habits. For early flowers, it’s best to start the tubers inside during late February or March in containers or flats and cover them shallowly with potting mix. The indentation that produces shoots should be on top. The rounded side where the roots will emerge should face down. You can start them later – unsold tubers often go

on sale in April. Begonias can’t be put outside till frost season is over anyway. They can be fussy to grow. Begonias hate heavy soil. They need good drainage, rich feeding, and the kind of sunless shade that has lots of light. Constantly moist conditions please them, but moisture on their leaves can cause disease. Some gardeners can keep the same tubers for years with a flower display that gets bigger and better each summer. When they die back following cool fall nights, they can be lifted and dried off a little. Then the stems can be cut back and the tubers stored in dry peat or vermiculite. Gardeners who love bringing cut flowers into the house often plant gladioli corms each year – though the flower garden isn’t always the best place for them. Large-flowered varieties tend to lean unless staked, they need full sun and space and once cut leave an unsightly stump behind. The vegetable garden is often a better spot because after being cut, the leaves can die back without causing esthetic problems. Gladioli do well in most

soils, and in the vegetable garden they can easily share in the good drainage, rich nutrition and weekly watering. The beautifully scented Gladiolus callianthus (formerly acidanthera) is another lovely cut flower, not unlike a narcissus with white petals and central maroon splotches. It likes the same sun, soil, feeding, watering and storage that other gladioli do. It will flower for six weeks if you keep it cut. Eucomis (Pineapple Lily) also flowers for many weeks and is beginning to be available in more colourful varieties. All retain the tuft of leaves crowning the flower stem, but Leia (the Aloha Lily) has very large pink flowers, Sparkling Burgundy has bronze purple leaves and pink flowers, Montana has white florets with dark purple anthers, and Vandermerwei has ruffled green leaves with purple spots and purple flowers. All like rich, welldrained soil, bright filtered light and lots of water in the growing season. They should be stored inside and given very little water over the winter. Send gardening questions to Anne, amarrison@shaw.ca.

When it comes to a full-bodied coffee experience, Caffè Artigiano is in a league of its own.

Regarded as North America’s premier coffee-house chain, Caffè Artigiano launched in Vancouver in December 1999 with a vision of an Italian-style coffee house and bistro that offered superior coffee, excellent food and a lively-yet-comfortable atmosphere. Today, the company famous for its stunning ‘latte art’—a unique rosetta, tulip or heart atop each cappuccino and latte served—offers a warm atmosphere rich with rustic-meets-contemporary Italian flare. Of course, it all starts with the best beans. Caffè Artigiano sources and purchases only the finest coffee beans from select farms around the world, ensuring superior-quality coffee, espresso and lattes. Caffè Artigiano is proud to have won numerous accolades over the years for its team of highlyskilled professional baristas, who ensure that each cup of coffee is poured to perfection. We have placed in the top seven in the world for seven consecutive years. Kyle Straw, Canadian Barista Champion in 2009, placed 7th in June 2010 in London, England. We held the title from 2003 through 2009. What does this mean? The best espresso you can get anywhere in the world. Caffè Artigiano offers an array Italian-inspired caffè fare made with only the highest-quality ingredients available. The menus includes made-to-order panini sandwiches, along with specialty baked goods such as fresh pastries, muffins and scones. Now that summer has arrived, there’s no better time to pull up a chair outside, sit back with a heart-topped cappuccino and a golden panini, and let yourself be transported to a bustling sidewalk bistro in Italy (passport not required). the road and feeling very much like an extension of the driver’s will. It offers a relaxed and natural onroad experience that makes it very rewarding to drive. There’s a word for this, of course: fahrvergnügen. Translating roughly as “driving enjoyment,” it’s a term that VW hasn’t used in advertising for years, but its spirit is thankfully alive and well in the automaker’s engineering efforts.

Design

While there’s nothing particularly wrong with the Tiguan’s plain exterior, there’s just nothing to get emotional about. As a result, the SUV blends into its surroundings entirely too well, completely failing to stand out on a busy street. All of the exterior design elements seem borrowed

Whereas other SUVs drive like family sedans and minivans, the Tiguan is closer to the Golf hatchback on which it’s based: nimble, quick and fun to drive. In a market dominated by the Ford Escape, Honda CR-V, and Toyota RAV4, the Volkswagen Tiguan is refreshingly different. Unlike its more-established competitors, the VW is still in its first generation, having only been introduced in 2008. It’s the youngster of the group, and it wears that badge with pride. While the RAV4 and CR-V really set the bar for compact SUVs in the late 90’s, the current models are hard to see as “compact” – they’ve grown with each generation. In contrast, the Tiguan retains a compact feel. Mind you, the Tiguan isn’t really much smaller than the rest – it just feels like it. And that’s due to two factors: perception and performance. Part of our perception of the Tiguan as a compact SUV comes from the fact that we don’t have a previous model with which to compare it. We see the Tiguan for what it really is – a vehicle that has yet to experience a generational growth spurt. That being said, perception is only worth so much – a far more important con-

from other VW cars. Some improvements have been made for 2011, but the overall impact remains the same as before. Inside, the Tiguan’s styling is functional and efficient but far too simple and spartan to really grab attention.

Performance

A turbocharged 2.0L inline-four powers every Tiguan, producing 200-hp and 207 lb.-ft. of torque. It’s the same setup found in the Golf GTI, and it’s used to great effect. The potent engine provides excellent power with minimal turbo lag, making the Tiguan extremely responsive at all times. The Tiguan can be had with a six-speed manual or six-speed TIPTRONIC automatic transmission, as well as front- or all-wheel drive (automatic only). Overall, the powertrain is very well-developed, contributing significantly to the SUV’s class-leading driving experience. Handling is responsive and there’s lots of feedback from the slightly heavy steering, enabling drivers to intuitively sense and react to road conditions.

Environment

Although the Tiguan doesn’t seem as big inside as competing vehicles, it doesn’t feel at all cramped. VW did a good job optimizing the available space to maximize interior room. Equipped with an eight-position adjustable seat, the Tiguan puts the driver in a

ARTHRITIS SELF-MANAGEMENT PROGRAM

tall seating position that affords a great view of the road. The rear seats have a well-designed, one-touch folding mechanism and split 40/20/40, with the middle section providing a wide, plastic armrest with cupholders, while allowing easy access to the cargo area. Up front, the large map pockets, glove box, and small bins are great, but the smallish centre-console compartment could be improved.

When the first settler of the south-east Ontario town now known as Hanover, Ont. staked his claim, he was said to have exclaimed, “It is good to be here.” Today, one of its townsfolk is saying the same thing about the city of Burnaby. “Twenty-three has been the best year of my life. It’s been incredible,” said Patrick Switzer, who moved to the Lower Mainland to pursue his passion for longboarding. The B.C. Institute of Technology mechanical engineering student is currently riding a wave of good fortune on his 40inch longboard, both at home and on the world cup circuit. Not only did Switzer finish second behind fellow Canadian Kevin Reimer in overall points on the International Gravity Sports Association World Cup series last season, he is also at the forefront of what he describes as the fastest growing section of skateboarding right now. “Not only are we doing something exciting, fun and amazing, we’re getting those vibes out to the rest of the world to see some of what we do,” said the 23-year-old Burnaby resident. When Switzer earns his engineering diploma at BCIT next month, he will return to the World Cup circuit that spans five continents, including stops in Europe, South America, Australia and possibly South Africa. “After that, I don’t know,” he said. “I’ll be

to be perceived by those with whom they share the road. It’s all about respect, he said. Switzer likes to greet onlookers with a smile and a greeting of “Hi, I’m your neighbourhood longboarder. I want you to want me to be here.” But while longboarding hasn’t yet reached the acceptability of the modern bicycle, Switzer said

Burnaby Lake lost a game but earned enough points to send it through to the quarter-finals of the B.C. Rugby premier league. The Lakers clinched the sixth and final playoff berth following a 39-38 loss to the defending Rounsefell Cup champion University of Victoria Vikes. The loss earned Burnaby a crucial two bonus points, edging them one point better than Bayside in the eight-team loop. Burnaby Lake led twice in the contest but trailed for most of the match. UVic took an early 19-0 lead before Gareth Marsden crashed over the line for Burnaby’s first try. Jeke Gotegote kept up the momentum, taking two defenders with him as he bulled over for the home team’s second score. Mike Gough converted both tallies to shave the deficit to 19-14 at the half. Burnaby Lake took its first lead on the ensuing restart. Doug Breadon forced a turnover and Anthony Luca took the ball to the 15-metre line before Nate Mantle finished off the play with the scoretying try. Gough’s conversion put Burnaby ahead 21-19. The two teams then traded the lead, with Joe Dolesau putting Burnaby in the lead for a second time in the half, dazzling the crowd with his seventh try of the season.

looking into the sport and seeing what makes more sense to me in the sport.” That could mean coming back to the West Coast, which he considers the current hub of a sport just waiting to blow up. “It was a reason I came west,” Switzer added. Two years ago, Switzer started up a longboarding club at BCIT that teaches rider-friendly skills in the communities of East Vancouver, Burnaby and New Westminster.

The school returned the favour by becoming his largest sponsor outside of those companies involved in the industry. He is also currently developing a specialized skate tool with his engineering know-how to further the needs of those who enjoy the sport. Like many, Switzer first got into longboarding as a means of transportation. While living in Toronto, he learned how to ride a longboard and met his mentor

Rob Sydia. Now, he’s one of the world’s best, hurtling down mountain passes on a thin piece of wood and four small wheels at top speeds of up to 100 kilometres per hour. “I ride on one of the smallest wheelbases in the IGSA. I do it to prove that, yes, I can. I wanted to prove you can ride on something a little sketchy.” But there is nothing dodgy about how Switzer, and others like him, want

Giants to Rock for Canadian midget hockey history Tom Berridge sports editor

Five teams stand in front of the Northwest Giants winning their first-ever Telus Cup when the national midget hockey championship begins Monday. The Giants face a formidable host in the St. John’s Privateers hockey club. St. John’s boasts a 34-5 overall record in regular and post-season play this year. However, the Privateers were denied the opportunity to win back-to-back Atlantic regional

titles, falling 4-3 to the Halifax Titans in the regional championship game. Still, there is a lot of Maritime pride riding on the outcome of this month’s Telus Cup. A gold medal by the Privateers would make St. John’s the first host team since Calgary in 1991, and the first Atlantic team ever, to win a national midget title. Any medal would also make the Privateers the first Atlantic team to ever win a medal in consecutive years. The St. John’s Fog Devils placed third at last season’s Telus Cup.

The Halifax Titans have Atlantic Canada’s largest city back in the national final six for the first time since 1994. A Halifax team last earned a berth into the semifinals back in 1980, when the Halifax McDonald’s lost a bronze-medal matchup to the North Shore Winter Club in 1980. An Atlantic region team has also failed to make an appearance in the gold-medal game in the past nine years. One of the pre-tournament favourites are the Winnipeg Thrashers, who are returning to

the Telus Cup for the third time in four seasons. Although the Thrashers have just one silver medal in 2008 to show for it, a West region team has dominated the national championship tournament in all but two of the last nine championship years. The last regional team to break the West’s dominance at the Telus Cup was the Sudbury Nickel Capital Wolves from the Central region in 2008. The London Junior Knights, a five-time runner-up in the Central regionals, is finally get-

ting its chance to vie for what would be its first-ever national midget title. The only other regional champion to hoist a Telus Cup in the past decade were two teams from Quebec. The Gouverneurs de Ste-Foy in 2001 and Cantonniers de Magog won back-to-back cups for the Quebec region to begin the millenium. The Lions du Lac St-Louis hopes to make it a third time for Quebec. GOLF

Burnaby student wins again on links

Kevin Vigna won his second junior golf tournament in as many weeks. The 15-year-old St. Thomas More student held off a 32-player field in the boys’ 15-to-19 age division, shooting a two-round 143 at the Canadian Junior Golf Association Canada Cup qualifying tournament at Greenacres Golf Course on April 10. Vigna, who last week earned a qualifying spot at the world junior championships in San Diego, shot a four-under-par 67 in the opening round on Saturday. He followed up with a 76 under wet and windy conditions to win by three strokes. STM schoolmate Lucas Gatto of Burnaby finished tied for ninth spot with a seven-over 149 on the 6,022yard Richmond course.

Late-inning dinger gives Clan softball women a win Kelsey Haberl of Burnaby and Leah Riske provided the lategame heroics in Simon Fraser University’s 10th-inning win over St. Martin’s University in women’s softball on April 12. Riske homered home Haberl to give the Clan an 8-6 win over St. Martin’s in the first half of a suspended Great Northwest con-

ference doubleheader at Lacey, Washington. The second game also went to extra innings, but was suspended in the ninth inning due to darkness. The game will be continued at a later date. “We showed great character coming back today,” said SFU head coach Mike Renney in a Clan

press release. “It was good to see our bats going.” In the 10th inning, Haberl drove in the go-ahead run to give SFU a 6-5 advantage. Riske then homered to centre field. St. Martin’s responded with a single run in the bottom of the inning. Kelsie Hawkins earned the

win, coming on in relief of Cara Lukawesky, who went nine innings. The Clan trailed 2-0 until the sixth inning, when Brittany Mayers singled to score Carly LePoutre. SFU scored four more runs in the top of the seventh when LePoutre and Sammie Olexa both slapped two-run singles.

You snooze, you lose sale.

Giants: continued from page 29

The Lions are seeking a fourth national title. The team won three previous Canadian midget titles, spanning 1981 and 1992. The Northwest Giants shares a common history with the London, Ontario club. The major midget Giants came within a single goal of qualifying for the Telus Cup in two previous Pacific regional bestof-three championships series. The Burnaby-based club swept last year’s champion from Red Deer, Alta. in straight games last month. “It’s been a goal from the beginning of the year,” said the Giants leading scorer Alex Kerfoot. “I personally have never played in a national championship. If we keep it up and keep playing like we are now, I think we can get it done.” It is the Giants’ second appearance at the Telus Cup. They finished fourth in 2007, when host Red Deer won the regional title over a Giants’ squad. The last time a B.C. team won a medal at a Canadian midget championship tournament was North Kamloops Lions in 1996. Burnaby Winter Club won gold in 1982.

COASTAL CUP PLAYDOWNS

South Burnaby alive in soccer cup semifinals Tom Berridge sports editor

Three South Burnaby Metro Club soccer teams advanced to their respective Coastal B Cup semifinal matches. The South Burnaby Snipers eked out a 1-0 victory in overtime over the West Vancouver Spuraways to move into the final four of the under-16 boys’ B Cup on Alexandro Castelblanco’s OT winner. After a scoreless 80 minutes of regulation time, midfielder Zach Orr made an excellent run down the left side and crossed a ball to the onrushing Castelblanco, who confidently struck the ball past the outstretched hands of the West Van keeper. Snipers goalie Robert Wright made several diving stops to keep the Spuraway forwards off the scoresheet. The Snipers take on Coquitlam Metro-Ford Liverpool on Sunday at Byrne Creek turf, beginning at 12:30 p.m. The u-17 SBMC Spitfires

also pulled out a late victory, beating the North Coquitlam Blue Devils 2-1 on a breakaway goal by Daniel Aguilar. South Burnaby dominated the first half everywhere but on the scoresheet. Jonathon Louie finally broke the deadlock for the Spitfires, heading in a loose ball in a goalmouth scramble early in the latter half. North Coquitlam equalized 20 minutes into the period. With 10 minutes left to play, Alex Golshan sent Aguilar on a clear breakaway with a perfect through ball. The Spitfires advance against the West Van Spuraways 94 following the u-16 cup semi at Byrne Creek. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. The u-18 Brilliant will be travelling to Chilliwack this weekend following a 4-1 victory over the North Fraser Selects United A team. Jacey Zerb scored a pair of goals to lead the Burnaby club, including the gamewinning tally late in the

first half. Brennan Zerb opened the scoring on a nice feed from striker Botond Jakab. The two teamed up on a give-and-go for Brilliant’s third goal, with Jakab getting the strike that gave South Burnaby a 3-0 lead. North Fraser spoiled Tyler Degan’s opportunity for a shutout on a scramble from a late free kick. In other Coastal Cup playdowns, the u-14 Burnaby Royals take on Vancouver FC in a Coastal A Cup semifinal at Burnaby Lake Sports Complex-West Saturday at 10 a.m. The Burnaby Selects, 6-2 upset winners over the Burnaby Royals last week, face the North Shore Selects in an u-18 A Cup semi at Burnaby Lake-West on Sunday. Kickoff is at 4 p.m. The Cliff Avenue United Synergy is the only Burnaby girls club still alive in Coastal Cup play. The Synergy, 2-1 winners of the Surrey Selects last week, face the home team Victoria Capitals on Sunday.

Just enough: Jeke Gotegote, with ball, scored a try for Burnaby Lake in a 39-38 bonus-point loss to the University of Victoria last weekend.

Rugby: Play Old Boys at Jericho Pk. But UVic rallied with back-to-back scores to lead by eight points late in the game. Gough made it close, converting his own try to draw Burnaby Lake to within a point. Burnaby Lake will take on the UBC Old Boys at Jericho Park on Saturday. Kickoff

is at 2:45 p.m. In first division play, Burnaby Lake claimed second place overall following a 28-19 win over UVic. Fuku Viklani, Matt Campbell and Isaac Bainivalu scored tries for the winner. Carlos Periera added a convert and four penalty goals. The third team fell 20-17 to Simon Fraser University.

his group is doing everything it can to do things the right way. “I’m happy with how the sport is right now. We’re taking it in the right way. Respect is a huge thing,” he said, adding all race courses have marshalls and medical personnel on site. But longboarding will always appeal to the zen in every boarder, said Switzer. “You get into the mode of what you’re doing, you’re in tune with your board as if it’s an extension of you. The biggest rush is coming up to the corners, your buddy is five metres behind you and you’re following someone five metres ahead of you, and you have to slow down,

but you make it through clean, and laugh. It’s quite the feeling to be able to ride very comfortabley on a board and the thrill of the curve.” But to Switzer, an equally amazing thrill comes with every opportunity he gets to pass along what he’s learned to others. “Now, I’m that guy teaching those young kids,” he said. “We want everyone to keep it safe and to pass on that knowledge of safety and etiquette when on the open road.” Social media is also having a big impact on bringing the sport to a wider audience. “It’s also inclusive,” Switzer added. “And that’s huge for a sport these days. We want people to be involved.”

Clan split field pair Simon Fraser University split a pair of field lacrosse matches with ranked opponents last week. The Clan club team fell 22-14 to No. 15 University of Oregon in a Pacific Northwest conference game held on April 8. The following day, SFU upset No. 7 Cal Poly 17-15, claiming its first top-10 victory of the season. Calvin Craig led the way, scoring six goals in each of SFU’s matches. He now leads all Clan scorers with 49 tallies. Colton Dow added three goals in the loss. He added seven more points, including four markers in the win over Cal Poly.

CAREER COACH Career Change After 40

"How old would you be if you didn't know how old you are?"This quote was by Satchel Paige, who was documented in the Guinness Book of Records as being the oldest baseball player, making his last Chris Newell pitch from the mound when he was 59! Phyllis Diller started her career as a comedienne, actor and author at 37! Colonel Sanders (of KFC fame), started actively franchising his chicken business at 65! There are many stories of people who have started or pursued a 'career' later in life. Clients we meet in our program (which is open to adults 2060+yrs) are where we learn of most of them. We see more people over 40 making a career transition than ever before. Different circumstances have contributed to this such as: losing a job because of company restructuring, burnout or health concerns; re-entering the workforce because of family or marital changes; dissatisfaction in previous jobs; or necessity of earning an income to prepare for retirement, which is still a long way off because of insufficient funds, sometimes due to adult children who are borrowing money because they cannot afford to support themselves. Looking at ones' career or job prospects for the next term of our lives involves careful planning and gradual implementation. It also involves letting go of outdated attitudes and perceptions of what the world of work was, or 'should' be. Today, security comes not from an external source, but from an internal one – ourselves. Managing our life and work is true security and requires organization, commitment, responsibility, flexibility and resourcefulness. Included in this is learning how you can reposition your skills and set up a career portfolio – which is a process of accessing several potential streams of income instead of relying on just one job. Making a career change when you are over 40 can be daunting, and you need not try to figure it out alone. Consider contacting a career coach to help you with the process. The Transitions Program, a free 3-week career exploration program, is available to all unemployed people in the Lower Mainland. For information call 604-434-1177 or 604-681-2774.

April 30 - May 1, 2011

Hellenic Community Centre, 4500 Arbutus, Vancouver

Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections Aries March 21 - April 19: Your energy, charisma and luck remain high. But you face many nudges to change – your ethics, life philosophy, legal approach, culture, your raison d’etre; to change your goals and hopes, friends and entire connection to mankind, to change your career and ambitions, even your close relations – these urges race through your days and your being. Ignoring or fighting them can make you say, “I’m unlucky!” If you embrace them, you’ll ride an exhilarating breeze of providence. Sunday/Monday show your limits; midweek, your immense horizons. The month ahead accents earnings, spending. Taurus April 20-May 20: Start nothing new before April 23. Recent weariness and solitude are due to lift partially from Wednesday through late May, as your energy and charisma rise. Then by June a whole year of luck and expansion will begin! Meantime, proceed carefully Sunday (work, health) and Monday (relationships) – you might suffer a loss of enthusiasm about something essential, or meet a legal roadblock. Wait until Tuesday, when new ideas and renewed affection make dealings, love and work, brighter and better. Lucky intimate and financial opportunities exist Wednesday/Thursday. Sweet wisdom late week. Gemini May 21-June 20: Start nothing new before April 23.An exhilarating month of smiles, hopes, social openings, flirtations and entertainment meets an obstacle Sunday/Monday – another’s reluctance to involve deeply with you is a reflection of your own hidden reluctance. Romance in 2011 and 12 demands deep commitment and sacrifice, or forget it. Wednesday/Thursday you have a (big!) chance to commit, sign, relocate, marry. But Wednesday also starts a month of quietude, retreat and weariness. If you recently launched big things, now handle the consequent obligations. A life wish will soon come true!

Cancer June 21-July 22: Start nothing new before Friday. But do push forward with ongoing or past projects, especially in career, prestige and business zones, and in relations with bosses, parents, VIPs and authorities. Your luck in these areas continues brightly to early June. Don’t waste this time! From Wednesday onward, your popularity and optimism rise, and social networking will increase the results of your ambitious efforts. A wish might come true in the weeks ahead. Romance lures but disappoints Monday/Tuesday. Tackle chores midweek. Relationships excite Friday, but present dilemmas Saturday. Leo July 23-Aug. 22: Before April 23, stick with ongoing projects, people, or re-start ventures, relationships from the past. You’ll feel sluggish Monday/Tuesday – rest, realize a recent travel, legal, love or cultural “push” is subsiding briefly. New trends in these areas arise late April to early June, and will be as lucky as those of the last three months. Wednesday begins a month of ambition, status-seeking, and relations with VIPs, authorities, bosses and parents. All’s smooth here, but do work hard, as your worth, talents, will be “examined.” Romance, creative urges soar midweek! To work, Friday. Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: Start nothing new before April 23. Sunday/Monday might deal a minor blow to your sexual, financial or “new lifestyle” projects. If you’ve already accomplished much in one of these areas the last several months, early week merely brings doubts. But if you’ve spent past weeks building up to a magnificent act, and haven’t performed that act (sexual, financial or lifestyle) yet, this week could disappoint. Whatever happens, you still have seven weeks of huge luck in these arenas. All could be solved by mid-week! If not, wait until after the 23rd, then launch your efforts anew.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: Avoid new starts before April 23. Significant events might have occurred with an “ex” during the last few weeks, yet if this person pursues you now (early week) you might softly reject him/her, mostly due to doubts about your passion, or about the long-range security of the relationship. (This can happen in business, also, e.g., in contract negotiations.) Don’t despair – solutions occur Tuesday to Thursday. Luck still swells relationships, relocation and agreements to June. Wednesday begins a month of significant sexual and financial choices, lifestyle changes. Home, late week. Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: A long, wearying month of work and health concerns ends now, but “significant work” lasts until early June. Don’t weep – this period offers substantial monetary compensation. If you’re handling two people’s jobs, ask for at least one and a half people’s pay – but do it Wednesday/ Thursday, or before the work ends (early June). Work, health, machinery run into a barrier Sunday/Monday. Your energy is high Monday, so try to leap over this hindrance. If you can’t, make an adjustment Tuesday (might involve sweet-talking a sweet person) and go on. Start no new projects before April 23. Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: Romance, a creative project or dealings with children hit a snag early week. Look at your long-term future – this will tell you how you should react. That hindrance might be a hidden blessing. You still have seven weeks of splendid luck in romance, speculation, games/ sports, kids, creativity, pleasure, beauty – and a major prize might await, especially if you’re seeking love! (Remember, pursue noting, no one new before April 23.) Sunday’s optimistic, joyous. Your energy fades Monday/Tuesday, but returns, with clout, charisma and luck, Wednesday/Thursday. Work looms – soon.

Apr. 17 - April 23 Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: You might have sewn up a great security, real estate or business territory deal (or severance package) during the last few months, Cap. If not, you have seven weeks still to accomplish this. Don’t ignore it – it will be one of the significant turning points of your life. Plan, delegate rather than “slave.” Your efforts might hit a temporary snag Sunday/Monday; the core of this obstacle is your own desire to gain status. The true gains now will be made at the opposite extreme: be humble, forget fighting to be top of the heap. Start nothing new before April 23. Soon, romance! Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: An active, talkative, friendly, travel-filled period partly ends Wednesday (though it lingers luckily in many ways to early June). A legal, educational, cultural, travel or other obligation or restriction arises Sunday/Monday. There’s a message here: the long is stronger than the short. The month ahead features land, security, home, territory, family, gardening, soul and nutrition. In June, a year of huge luck in these zones begins, so use late April and May to investigate, plan, to get ready. But don’t jump (e.g., buy a home) before June 4! Joy and friends come, midweek! Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: A lucky financial month is about to end, although your money luck will continue to a large degree until early June. The weeks just past emphasized money connected to work and industry; the seven weeks ahead emphasize money connected to career, ambition and prestige. This “switch” is partly signaled by an obstacle or sobering event Sunday/Monday, in which your future, or your social connections, prove stronger than your pure monetary desires. (Going forward, it’s not what you did, but who you will know.) Your career is beautifully favored Wednesday/Thursday – charge ahead! timstephens@shaw.ca • Reading: 416-686-5014
