Robbery drama unfolds Alfie Lau and Brent Richter

Five men are in custody following a botched robbery and dramatic police takedown in Burnaby. Police officers swarmed around the entrance to the business complex at 3430 Brighton Ave. and the Production Way SkyTrain station on Wednesday afternoon. Police say some North Vancouver RCMP plainclothes investigators were in the “right place at the time,” when the suspects attempted to rob a Pacific CoastCom Telus store around 1:30 p.m. “North Van was working an unrelated problem that was multi-jurisdictional, and they came across a vehicle of interest in another matter, and as they were in the process of coordinating a traffic check of that vehicle, these individuals did a robbery right in front of them,” said Burnaby RCMP Sgt. Andy LeClair. “Right now, we have five in custody. As far as what charges will be laid, I can’t speak to that. Nobody’s been charged yet. We’re just in the complete beginnings of this.” Several eyewitnesses reported seeing police take the suspects down with guns drawn in the lower parking lot behind the Burnaby NOW offices. Meanwhile, police were also on scene across Lougheed Highway at the Production Way SkyTrain station. Eyewitnesses told the Burnaby NOW that at least one suspect was taken into custody at that location. “It’s one of those things that unfolded quickly. But I can tell you right now, just on the front end of it, I’m pretty pleased with the fact that these guys are in custody,” LeClair said. LeClair said at least two of the suspects were already known to police. LeClair said police have recovered a replica handgun from one of the suspects, but it had not been converted to fire live ammunition.

One immediate action would be to support the delivery of increased social housing dollars to provincial and municipal governments through the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation. Get back into funding co-operative housing, and the renovations of older homes and buildings to be more energy efficient. That would also help with job creation. What is your party’s track record on dealing with that issue? Since we’ve not had the chance to prove ourselves, I can only say that this is one of my own priorities.

Market at the village Janaya Fuller-Evans staff reporter
The Burnaby Village Farmers’ Market is scheduled to open outside the Burnaby Village Museum on Saturday, May 7. The market is moving to its new location this year during the Burnaby Village Museum’s 40th anniversary season. There will be room for more vendors at the new site, according to Isabelle Bottin, who called the NOW on behalf of Artisan Markets. There will also be free parking in the area, she said, and free admission to the museum, as part of the anniversary celebrations this season. The opening day celebration will include music all day long, a kids’ table, face painting and games, and market manager Lyn Hainstock will be in attendance, Bottin added. All the regular vendors are returning, Bottin said. “There’s a huge variety of new vendors coming in as well,” she added.
There is also a book exchange, she said. The market is comprised of tables for farmers, prepared food vendors and crafters. There is also a kids’ play area and a community area for non-profit groups, as well as weekly entertainment. Past products for sale included jam, jelly, vinegar, salsa, sauces, baking, honey, maple syrup, tea, eggs, beef, pottery, woodwork, jewelry and soap. A cooking competition is scheduled for the first Saturday of the month at noon, starting in June. Competitors should bring their best dessert, with recipe, for June 4. Family days will also be held for Mother’s Day, on May 7; Father’s Day, on June 18; Canada Day, on July 2; B.C. Day, on July 30; Labour Day, on Sept. 10; and Thanksgiving, on Oct. 8. The market is scheduled to run on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. from May 7 until Oct. 29. For more information, go to www.arti sanmarkets.ca.

Marijuana dispensary: Ryan Steplock, Britney Anne and Jordan Kuyvenhoven at the newly opened Metrotown Medicinal Society.
Medical marijuana dispensary opens Janaya Fuller-Evans
staff reporter
Burnaby’s first medical marijuana dispensary opened at 10 a.m. on April 15, and so far, things are going well, according to Metrotown Medicinal Society director Britney Anne. “It’s been great,” she said in a phone interview the afternoon it opened. “We’ve got five members so far.” The society invited the Burnaby RCMP to the opening to address any concerns law enforcement might have, she said, but officers did not attend. But Burnaby RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Brenda Gresiuk said compassion clubs and dispensaries aren’t legally entitled to sell marijuana under Canadian law. “To date, there’s no legal mechanism for that,” she said. She would not comment on whether or not action would be taken by the RCMP
against the dispensary. Health Canada does not license such organizations to possess, produce or distribute marijuana for medical purposes, according to a government press release. The release was put out last June and sent to the NOW this week in response to queries about the Burnaby dispensary by Olivia Caron, a media relations officer for Health Canada. The federal Marihuana Medical Access Regulations only provide three options for individuals to obtain legal medical marijuana: access to Health Canada’s supply, obtaining a licence to produce it from Health Canada, or obtaining a licence from Health Canada to designate someone to grow it on the individual’s behalf. A letter or document from a physician alone does not give legal authorization for an individual to possess marijuana, the release stressed. Marijuana Page 8

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Who will expand CPP benefits? Dear Editor:
Elections are in the air, and I am concerned about the future of my retirement security, along with the majority of Canadians. With reports that only one in five private sector workers belong to an employer plan; that most people can’t save, let alone afford an RRSP; that seniors, single women, First Nations and those living with disabilities are living in poverty; and that our children won’t have access to the same job market that we once did, how is this sustainable? The provinces have a role to play, and with an election coming, I’ll be supporting politicians who support me and my family. I want an expansion of the CPP benefits on a fully funded go-forward basis, starting right now. This would bring equality and dignity for all, not just a privileged few. country. There are huge differences in the programs of the political parties, and yet in the last federal election, less than 60 per cent of eligible voters even bothered to vote! This is the lowest participation rate in Canadian history, and it seems to be part of a general trend over the past two decades. As long as so many Canadians refuse to participate in the political process in any meaningful way, unscrupulous people will continue to run the show. This is why over 1,000 people were arrested at the 2010 G20 demonstrations, and it is why 300,000 Canadians are homeless. Criminalization of dissent and mass poverty are serious issues, and we continue to head in the wrong direction on these and many other issues. But it’s going to get worse. Much, much worse. The price of gasoline is now more than $1.30 a litre, and we can expect to see large increases in the price of food real soon. Peak oil is a reality, and the price of fuel will continue to rise. Climate change and population explosion are realities, and the price of food will continue to rise. These are extremely serious problems, and unless they are addressed immediately by all of us working together and by our governments, all of us are going to be wishing that we had brought along a spare paddle. Of course, when that happens, it will be far too late. Federal election, 2011: Figure out what the parties stand for, and then, get out and vote! Victor Finberg, Burnaby
Parking solutions sought Dear Editor:
Re: Heights merchants want traffic solution, Burnaby NOW, April 13 I can agree with the Heights Merchants Association that “a neighbourhood with cars racing through it is not a successful
shopping district,” but I disagree with their opposition or “worry” to the city’s suggestion that employees and business owners park in parking lots. I have the perk of living close to the shops along Hastings, but with it comes the headache of having employees and business owners of the Heights parking in front of my home all day. I have spoken with city staff regarding this all-day parking, and unfortunately the solutions offered are not satisfactory, and I am told that resident parking only is not an option. I have even spoken with the people who park in front of my house all day, and all I get is a shrug of the shoulders and a: “I don’t have anywhere else to park.” Why wouldn’t the merchants want to take advantage of the city’s offer of parking? It is not stated, but even if there is a cost to it, is this not a part of business that can be written off? Is the cost not worth making the residents of the Heights happy? Please remember that you have a business in this neighbourhood, but we live here. G. Jinto, Burnaby

Re: An unintended vote for the Bloc?, Letters to the editor, Burnaby NOW, April 16 As usual, Mr. Gary Mauser’s letter was bang-on. Permit me to put another little twist on the situation. The Bloc gets 53 seats. As a result of Ignatieff’s performance, the NDP gets 52 seats and the Liberals end up with 51 seats. Going along with Mr. Mauser’s musings, that makes Gilles Duceppe prime minister, Jack Layton minister of finance and Michael Ignatieff minister of foreign affairs or minister of defence … It won’t be a pretty picture! You’ll never recognize Canada! Ziggy Eckardt, Burnaby
Election: Changes needed But I can’t pick and choose from the policies of the parties. All I can do is make one vote, for one potential MP, who may or may not win, may or may not sit on the back benches, may or may not cave in and compromise the second Parliament convenes. ◆ Negativity and personality: As I write this, the four main party leaders are scrapping on TV about
ethics and leadership ability and coalitions that may or may not exist. When policy does get mentioned in campaigns, it tends to be “X is a strong leader who can provide a stable economy,” or “X cares about families.” The last time I checked, strength of character was not enough to stave off a recession, and if I wanted a leader to care about me personally, I’d have friended him on Facebook

Heritage signs get boost from city
Burnaby city council has approved plans to renew two signs in the Burnaby Heights neighbourhood and repair five Trans-Canada Trail signs. The work got the go-ahead at Monday night’s council meeting. An interpretive sign, previously located with the Swinging Girl sign in the Heights, is being recreated with
an update on the story of the restoration and the civic landmark. Another interpretive sign, located at MacDonald Avenue and Hastings Street, was originally created to celebrate the original Regent Theatre in the neighbourhood. As the 1926 Regent Theatre Block has recently been renovated, the city
plans to relocate the sign to the building at 4142 Hastings St. In addition, the city plans to repair and reinstall the Crabtown interpretation sign stand on the TransCanada Trail, and clean up, paint and repair the four other signs located in Burnaby. – Janaya Fuller-Evans

Marijuana: New dispensary near SkyTrain station continued from page 5
The dispensary only accepts members who have a doctor’s recommendation or confirmation of a serious illness, which is in line with other dispensaries in B.C., Anne said. “We aren’t selling to just anybody,” she said, but added that the dispensary has an unlimited capacity to serve any valid patients who wish to apply. “We do follow correct procedures.” The society was originally looking at setting up shop in New Westminster but chose the Burnaby property at 4927 Kingsway based on its central location and proximity to the Metrotown SkyTrain station, Anne said. There are two dispensaries in Vancouver, but patients from Coquitlam, New Westminster, Surrey and other suburbs have difficulty travelling that distance, she explained.
“We serve a lot of disabled patients,” Anne said, adding that not all of the members are able to drive. The Metrotown dispensary is the first to be located near a SkyTrain line, she said. The society is considering expanding to New Westminster next, Anne added. Dana Larsen, who was a candidate in the recent B.C. New Democrat leadership race, is a director with the society and operates the Vancouver Medical Cannabis Dispensary with two locations in Vancouver. The first is in East Vancouver and the second opened about a year ago in Vancouver’s West End, he said. “It’s gone very smoothly,” he said of the two dispensaries, adding the society serves about 3,000 patients. The East Vancouver dispensary has a very good relationship with the nearby Ray-Cam Co-operative Centre, he said, and just received a

letter of thanks for a food drive done on behalf of the centre. Larsen is also on the board of a society that opened a dispensary in Maple Ridge, he said. There, people were initially concerned about the effect the dispensary might have on a neighbourhood where drug crime had only recently been reduced, according to Larsen. “Within a couple of weeks, we won our detractors over,” he said, adding the dispensary’s director is now a Block Watch captain in his neighbourhood. “They see how important we are to the community.” He expects the same reception in Burnaby, he said. The Metrotown Medicinal Society is located at 4927 Kingsway and is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. from Monday to Friday, and from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends. www.twitter.com/janayafe

On the other hand, it’s a huge financial decision. What will happen with rates? Should I take a fixed or variable rate mortgage? There’s a lot to think about! If you are a first-time homebuyer getting professional mortgage advice is a great place to start. We specialize in helping new homebuyers get off on the right foot. We do that by helping you determine what you can afford long before you consider putting an offer on a home. We also help you plan for your closing costs, and see what government grants and privileges apply to you! While it’s important to be prudent, many first-time homebuyers can be too cautious about getting into the market. First-time buyers are often surprised to find that they could have been building equity for the last few years, and in the process, leveraging their property purchase into a large financial return. I will ensure that I represent the whole community to Ottawa and not the other way around. I will stop the partisan misuse of the MP householder mailed reports. I will advocate strongly on anti-crime issues. I will also change the pattern of negative voting into positive voting, to help our community. What is your party’s track record on dealing with that issue? The government has passed or tabled many incremental improvements to the
justice system to provide the basic tools for public safety, including anti-human smuggling, but sadly, the NDP voted against all of them. If you could be any superhero, which one would you be? There are many that we can remember who gave of themselves, as they looked forward to make things better for the next generation. Spring salmon season
t’s that time of year when local streamkeepers are busy releasing tiny fry in local waterways to help replenish salmon populations. The Eagle Creek Streamkeepers held their salmon send-off on April 16. Thanks to volunteer Nick Kvenich for alerting our paper about that. We ran some photos in our last issue from the event, but I misidentified the group as the Byrne Creek Streamkeepers in the captions. Apologies for the confusion – completely my fault. The real Byrne Creek Streamkeepers are holding their salmon release next Tuesday, April 26, around 11 a.m. at the foot of Byrne Creek where it meets with Byrne Road. All community members are invited to attend. If you can’t make that event, the Stoney Creek Environment Committee is holding their salmon send-off on May 7, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thanks to volunteer Alan James for letting us know about that. That event will be at Stoney Creek Community School, 2740 Beaverbrook Cres. Participants will be releasing 3,000 coho fry, supplied by Fisheries and Oceans Canada. Members of the Sapperton Fish and Game Club will be there to help the kids release the small fry into the water. Volunteers from Burnaby Mountain Secondary will also help distribute the fish. The fry will live for a year, in the creek before heading out to sea. People should stay out of the creek (and keep their dogs out, too) for a year to let the salmon grow undisturbed.

“It is definitely mature content, but you’re so involved in the scene, instead of it being shocking, it is just a natural progression of the story,” said Binotto. “Plus it’s not really explicit on the stage. Thanks to Ms. Rudolph’s direction, all the more mature parts are off-stage and suggested except for the kiss, which of course happens all the time!” While people may already be familiar with the classic film, Rudolph said the
play, which is based more closely on the original 1915 short story the movie is, also has a different ending than Kurosawa’s version. “There’s a lot of backstory in the play that isn’t in the movie,” she said. Crazy 8s fest
I had a chance to attend the Crazy 8s film fest on April 9, which included a film with young Burnaby actor Sean Mathieson. For those who aren’t familiar with the concept, Crazy 8s is a contest where
filmmakers pitch their ideas, and finalists get $800 to make a short film in eight days. Sean, 14, gave a top-notch performance in Chained, a story seemingly about child abuse but with a surprise ending. Out of the six films screened at the gala, Chained seemed to get the loudest gasp at the end. Sean also landed a small part in Diary of a Wimpy Kid 2: Rodrick Rules, so keep an eye out for this Burnaby actor on the big screen.
Clarification
In an April 13 article in the Burnaby NOW, I mentioned that school trustee Diana Mumford was involved in efforts to make Byrne Creek Secondary the first community school in the district. I meant to write the first secondary community school in the district. We have, of course, a few elementary community schools in Burnaby already. The proclamation was one of about 10 made at the meeting, celebrating everything from Drinking Water Week (May 1 to 7) to Elizabeth Fry Week (May 2 to 8). New West resident Chuck Puchmayr, who has called himself “the poster boy for liver transplants” attended the meeting as a delegation, along with Jillian St. James from Langley, another transplant recipient. Puchmayr – a former New Westminster city councillor and NDP MLA – received

Corrigan suggested organ donation should be the default choice for everyone, with people having to contact the registry to have their names removed, instead of having to register themselves. The B.C. Helps to activate naturally millions of stem cells from our own bone marrow. The increase in stem cells released from the bone marrow into the blood stream have the potential to become other types of tissue cells with specialized function. Stem cells will multiply and are able to become heart cells, liver cells or any other organ. Located everywhere in our body, stem cells are even under our skin layered between the epidermis and dermis. This is why an increase in stem cells under our skin may help to create a more youthful cell that would replenish elastin and collagen and thus may make us look younger. If our bone marrow does not produce enough stem cells this can result in many illnesses, especially a weak heart, kidneys, liver, pancreas, in fact all healthy functions of our body are decreased. Sufficient stem cells in our body have a great potential of self-repair and the ability to rejuvenate tissues. It does not contain live human stem cells as these can only be transplanted by surgery and are subject to immunosuppressant drugs to avoid graft rejection.Naturopathic Doctor summarized his experience in writing after using this Stem Cell Activator: Used for all organ and tissue damage, heart attack damage, osteo-arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, traumatic brain injury, muscular #63 dystrophy, Crohn’s disease, diabetes, lupus, spinal injuries, and other diseases and tissue damage. The results have been very satisfactory to us and to the patients and the time varies with different patients depending on the extremity of the damage.
Women witnessing the effects of Bell Stem Cell Activator:
!Women looking for anti-aging help! We all want to slow down aging. After using a bottle of Bell Stem Cell Activator #63 my skin seemed smoother and brighter. My hair looked healthier. It seems to have a cleansing effect. I’m delighted. Leona McCormick, 50, Clgary, AB ! All around healing effect! The first thing I noticed after starting Bell Stem Cell Activator #63 was that my skin feels firmer and stronger. My friends commented that my skin looks more vibrant. My doctor at my yearly physical told me that my blood pressure is significantly lower. Many good things are happening. Joy Davison, 55, Calgary, AB
Acidic Stomach & Acid Reflux
By Dr. C. Hammoud, PhD - Must help or money refunded If your stomach is excessively acidic it means all your cells in your body are acidic. By correcting the excessively acidic stomach you should not need anti-acid pills to control reflux (heartburn). All acidic cells are deprived of oxygen and are the breeding ground for many illnesses including weight gain, diabetes, stress, vascular diseases and cancer. This fact was discovered by Dr. Otto Warburg years ago and he received two Nobel Prizes. You can change your acidic cells in your body by eating 80% alkaline food (vegetables, legumes, fruit). Eat 20% acidic food (bread, noodles, rice, animal derived foods). Full details inside the box. If you don’t want to make major #39 changes in your diet, try Bell Acidic Stomach/Alkaline Balance #39 guaranteed to bring your body to a pH alkaline balance. Free pH test kit inside the box. Dr. C. Everett Koop M.D. states that 68% of all illnesses and deaths are due to the wrong food and the quantity we eat. Unfortunately, virtually nothing about nutrition or natural health products is taught in medical school say many prominent medical doctors in print and on TV including the well known Dr. Andrew Weil M.D. Go on the internet and inform yourself.

The Burnaby Art Gallery is reaching out into the community with two new exhibitions at city libraries. At the Bob Prittie branch of the Burnaby Public Library, visitors can check out Broadsides, Chapbooks and Ephemera from (m)Other Tongue Press, on now until June 12. (m)Other Tongue Press was founded in 1994 by Salt Spring Island residents Peter Haase and Mona Fertig, with an eye on printing and publishing original poetry in broadside or chapbook form using its own letter press embellished with linocuts designed and printed by Haase. The press so far has worked with more than 28 poets from around B.C. and across Canada, and their publications are noted for the variety of printing techniques, binding methods and materials incorporated into each publication. In 2008, (m)Other Tongue Press was expanded to become Mother Tongue Publishing, and the company has already published several books of poetry, a novel and three volumes in the Unheralded Artists of B.C. series. Check them out at www.mother tonguepublishing.com or stop by the Bob Prittie library branch at 6100 Willingdon Ave., in the Metrotown neighbourhood, to see the exhibition. In North Burnaby, at the McGill branch, visitors can check out The Art Printer’s Toronto: City Seen Portfolio, featuring works from the City of Burnaby’s permanent art collection.

the lighting at all (and won’t project the name onto your garage door) but are a nice little addition. The interior is as welldone as the exterior, with a tiered dashboard that flows into the centre console. Instead of a hardplastic shell, the top of the dashboard is padded to
create a softer finish that’s more inviting. And ergonomics aside, the touch panels look nifty.
Performance
Most Edges feature a 3.5L V6 with 285-hp and 253 lb-ft of torque, but the Sport gets a 3.7L V6 with 305-hp and 280 lb-ft of torque that’s borrowed
from the Mustang, along with a fluid six-speed automatic transmission and paddle shifters that are surprisingly responsive.
Environment
There’s ample passenger space in both the front and rear, along with auto-folding rear seats that make it easy to extend the large cargo area. The cupholders and storage bin in the centre console are underwhelming, but sizable map pockets and a decent glove box make up for it.

Won a bronze medal at first-ever age-class wrestling tournament Tom Berridge sports editor
Melvin Arciaga is taking every victory as a first step along a ever-lengthening road to success. The Burnaby South Secondary School junior recently chalked up his first national age-group wrestling championships. But it undoubtedly will not be his last. The just-turned 16-year-old grappler won the Canadian cadet boys’ wrestling title at 50-kilograms in Windsor, Ont. on April 8. Arciaga, who won the provincial high school title earlier in the year, defeated his B.C. counterpart Andrew Dignan of Abbotsford 7-2 in the national final. But it was his upset win in the quarter-finals that was the most telling. In the quarters, Arciaga pinned heavy favourite Sam Jagas from the Matmen club in Mississauga, Ont. to move on to the final four. In his first-ever appearance at the cadet nationals last year, Arciaga finished with a silver medal at 48 kg. “I remember in Grade 9, I wanted to win the provincials. But after training over and over, I wanted to be a national champion becuse it sounded that much bigger,” said Arciaga. While that eventuality didn’t happen, Arciaga made sure that result would be different the next time he found himself in that position. “I was so close to getting a gold (last year),” Arciaga added. “(Jagas) was undefeated for a long time. When I pinned him, people came out of the stands and other athletes asked, ‘Are you the guy who beat Jagas? You know he hasn’t lost in years.’”
Larry Wright/burnaby now
Cadet champ: Burnaby South Secondary junior Melvin Arciaga is off to the Pan American wrestling championships in Mexico after coming away with a gold medal at the Canadian cadet freestyle wrestling championships earlier his month.
Rather than feel cocky or boastful, Arciaga thought that maybe the Ontario wrestler had perhaps been a bit overrated. Arciaga took the opening round 1-1 by virtue of the last point scored. He then fell behind 3-0 in the second. In the deciding round, Arciaga executed a step-over move on the former Pan Am champion and took him to his back to knot the
match before finally sealing the win with a pin. Arciaga went on to defeat Josh Bodnarchuk of Saskatoon 11-4 in the semifinal, before besting Dignan for a second time in a gold-medal final. Not bad for a young man who won a bronze medal at 41 kg in his first-ever competitive tournament just three years ago. That event was the highly
competitive Western Age Class championships. “It was like an all-out rumble between little guys,” remembered Arciaga of his Grade 8 debut into wrestling. “I just took it like one technique that I knew. I don’t remember what it was. I did one move or take down and I did it over and over in that tournament, and that’s how I earned the bronze.”
After that, he began training with coach Frank Mensah at Raw Academy, a martial arts club in East Vancouver. He also went out for the school team at Burnaby South under coach Danny Einhorn. “They taught me all the right techniques and mentally how to reach my goals,” Arciaga added. Wrestle Page 33
Hockey Giants still standing tall at Telus Cup Tom Berridge sports editor
The Northwest Giants are the only undefeated team left at the Telus Cup. The Giants fought back from a pair of one-goal leads to defeat the host St. John’s Privateers 4-3 at the Canadian national midget hockey championships Wednesday. First-year forward Jackson Houck tied the game 3-3 early in the third period. Houck then set up Sam Reinhart for the game-winning
tally six minutes later to give the Giants their slimmest margin of victory at the national championships to date. The win gave the Burnabybased club a 3-0 record. The Lions du Lac St-Louis are next at 2-1. Burnaby faced the Quebec champions Thursday (after NOW deadlines). Alex Kerfoot, who earned his second consecutive player of the game honour in the win, led off the scoring against St. John’s with his tournament-leading sixth goal of the championships.
Kerfoot currently leads all scorers with 16 points in three games, one less than Reinhart. Houck is next with six points. Joel Issigonis knotted the score at 2-2 midway through the middle frame. Scott Legault chalked up his second win between the pipes for the Giants. The Giants other keeper, Daniel Cotton, currently leads all goalies with a sparkling 0.970 save percentage while boasting a 0.75 goals against average. After opening the competition with a 12-5 pounding of
west region champion Winnipeg Thrashers, the Giants then dumped the Atlantic champs Halifax Titans 6-1 on Tuesday. Kerfoot led the way with a hat trick in a five-point outing. Reinhart chipped in with his fourth goal of the championships in the opening period. Sean Lan, Cam Marks and Alex McNeil also scored for the Pacific region champions. To date, the Giants power play has been very effective, scoring 10 times in 17 opportunities with the extra man. The team has been even bet-
ter killing penalties, allowing just two goals and stopping the combined opposition more than 81 per cent of the time. The Giants finished off the round-robin against Central champion London Jr. Knights on Friday, also played after NOW deadlines. The top four placing teams face off in today’s semifinals (Saturday). The medal games follow on the Sunday, with the gold-medal contest scheduled to be broadcast on TSN at 11:30 a.m. Pacific time.

The Cliff Avenue Synergy is back in the Coastal Cup. The past under-14 national club champion found its way back to the Coastal Cup final, eking out a 1-0 shootout victory over the regular season champion Victoria Capitals in the u-18 girls’ A cup semifinal in the Capital City last weekend. Eleni Tolusso scored what turned out to be the eventual game-winning goal in the shootout, scoring Cliff Avenue’s third
goal from the penalty spot. Samantha Drescher, Samantha McLuskie and Simran Parmar, with the final goal of the shootout, also scored. Kayla Klim stopped one Victoria shooter to help Cliff Avenue win 4-2 in penalty kicks. Cliff Avenue got stalwart efforts from the rest of the 14 players that made the trip, including Monica Pogorski, who made a number of heroic tackles to keep the score deadlocked in regulation and extra time. Megan Pasternak also won a lot of ball on the
back line for the Synergy. The Synergy finished fourth overall in league play. “Every single player put in a worthy shift,” said Cliff Avenue head coach Mark Pennington. “It was a very emotional game just because we were playing the top team. We knew this would be a very difficult game.” Cliff Aveune will face Langley FC in the Coastal A Cup final over the April 30/May 1 weekend. “If we want to keep this going we’ve got to keep winning,” said Pennington.

Olver scored an emptynet goal and assisted on teammate Ryan Stoa’s second-period tally with his first-ever professional playoff point in Lake Erie’s 6-4 win over Manitoba at home April 16. Olver finished 19th among AHL rookies with 14 goals and 27 assists. He finished off the season with the NHL Colorado Avalanche, where he tallied two goals and posted nine points in 18 games with the parent club. The Moose tied the bestof-seven series winning 3-2 in overtime Sunday, on former Canuck Rick Rypien’s game-winning goal in the eighth minute of overtime. The Monsters then took a two-game series lead following a 2-1 on Tuesday. The two teams were very evenly matched this season with similar home and away records. Lake Erie and Manitoba
MoscropgradJakieKöhli was named the Women’s varsity water polo Western Division defensive player of the week. The honour was the second divisional defensive player award for the Indiana University swimmer. The Burnaby native currently has 209 career steals at Indiana, fifth overall on the all-time list.

He was a plus-9 during that span with the Tigers. Prior to the stint, McNeely completed four years at Northeastern University, where he amassed 44 goals and 61 assists in 142 career games. CLAN SOFTBALL
SFU women eke out a win in twin doubleheaders Tom Berridge sports editor
Simon Fraser University failed to gain any ground in Great Northwest conference women’s softball. The varsity Clan dropped both ends of a Saturday doubleheader to third-place Montana StateBillings at home on April 16. SFU lost the opener 63 before falling 3-2 in the later game at Beedie Field. “We simply went flat. We had a couple of big swings that got us a few big runs, but unfortunately we played 13 innings and only made about five of those count,” said SFU head coach Mike Renney in a school press release. Senior first base Kelsey Haberl got the home team on the board first, clubbing a two-run homer in the
opening inning. SFU added to its lead in the following inning on Megan Durrant’s first homerun of the season. Kelsie Hawkins came on in relief of starting pitcher Cara Lukawesky in the seventh inning but gave up a pair of two-run home runs to take the loss. In the second game, MSB led 2-0 after four innings, but Leah Riske and Durrant, with her second dinger of the day, both connected on solo home runs to tie the score. Billings broke the tie with a single down the left field line, spoiling Cortney McCallum’s opportunity to post her first win of the season. The following day, the Clan split a doubleheader with conference-leading Western Washington University.
SFU dropped the opener 11-3 before coming back to win the later game by a 135 score. Down 5-0 after the first inning, SFU took the lead with a five-hit, six-run bottom of the second inning. Brittany Ribeiro got things started with an RBI double. Haberl also doubled down the right field line to cash in two more runs. SFU scored another five runs in the third, including Haberl’s second two-run double of the game. Lukawesky earned her seventh win of the season. In the opener, Haberl cut a 4-0 deficit in half with a two-run single to left field. But WWU, answered back in the seventh frame with a seven-run inning. The Clan women committed seven errors in the loss.

Wrestle: He’s wrestling for a reason continued from page 29
But there is something more to Arciaga that goes beyond just the good student/ good coach relationship. Arciaga was first enrolled into martial arts by his father to give his then 11-yearold son a fun activity to pursue. Fast forward to next month, and Arciaga will be competing this August at the Pan American championships in Mexico in his first-ever international assignment as part of a Canadian wrestling team. But despite the talented teen’s meteoric rise in arguably one of the toughest individual sports on the planet, Arciaga is not about to get ahead of himself. Arciaga’s goals continue to be modest, yet realistic. He wants to add a national juvenile title to his mantel and maybe go to the junior nationals as a graduating senior. After that, the current honour roll student sees himself continuing on in wres-
tling at either Simon Fraser University or Douglas College. The difference between the average high school wrestler and one that wants to continue on in the sport is goals, said Arciaga. “I wrestle for a reason. When I wrestle, I know what I’m wrestling for. Right now, I’m wrestling for the Pan Ams, it’s pretty big.” But when pressed further, Arciaga concedes he has his own reward – “his pride.” “I want to go step by step and see what the next step is,” he said. “I hope I can because I don’t think that you can win the Olympics tomorrow. You have to work your way up there.” Listening to Arciaga tell his story, I have no doubt that somewhere along long road ahead of him, there is a stop in that direction. tberridge@burnabynow.com

It is with heavy hearts we announce Dad’s passing, peacefully, and with family at his side. He is deeply loved by his wife Georgina, son Ken (Susan) and daughter Pamela. Survived by brothers Ernie (Lil) and Hubert (Helen); grandchildren Jeffrey (Vicki) Letourneau and Nathan (Tania) Letourneau and 4 great-grandchildren. Our beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend will be missed by all who knew him. Dad was born in New Westminster and raised in Port Moody, the eldest of 5 boys. Growing up in Port Moody, Dad met the love of his life, Georgina Ostegard. World War II in 1939 interrupted their courtship, as Dad enlisted and served 5 years with the Royal Westminster Regiment, 5th Canadian Armoured Division in Europe. Dad returned in 1946 and they were married in Port Moody. Georgina and Bill celebrate 65 years of marriage in 2011. Dad joined the New Westminster City Police in 1953 and retired 35 years later. Dad won many Pistol Shooting Competitions throughout his Police Career, but he was never a hunter. He loved fishing, gardening, cooking, stone carving, big band orchestra music, dancing and driving his car. Dad loved people and a good cup of coffee. But most of all, Dad loved his family, and his sweetheart Georgie. We’ll be seeing you Dad! Cheerio! Dad’s family would like to express much gratitude to the nurses, staff and volunteers and all the special people at Burquitlam Lions Care Centre for their gentle care and support over the past two years. In lieu of flowers, donations to Burquitlam Lions Care Centre, 560 Sydney Avenue, Coquitlam, BC V3K 6A4 is appreciated. Memorial service to be held on Saturday, April 23, 2011 at 1:00pm at St. Mary’s the Virgin Church, 121 East Columbia Street, New Westminster (Sapperton).

Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections Aries March 21 - April 19: Delays end. You can charge ahead on new fronts. You’ve already entered a brand new world – it is sleek, clear, alive, even nervous, and within this new world, friends, ideas, inventiveness and fun are more important than money. You’re going to have fun Sunday to Tuesday – and for eight years! Your freedom is growing. The shy, quiet, dreamy and elusive friends of the past decade fall away, to be replaced by bright, sharp-minded types. This week, this “peeling off” causes a relationship disappointment. For the month ahead, chase money, seek higher earnings, cultivate new clients. Taurus April 20-May 20: Your energy, charisma and effectiveness rise strongly! The delays of April have ended. Start new projects, see and be seen, tackle chores that previously intimidated you. Despite this surge of energy, one part of you remains contemplative, and is tied in to private matters, quiet planning sessions, government liaisons, etc. Your real “break out” will come in June, when a year of huge luck will commence! Meanwhile, be ambitious Sunday/Monday – luck is with you. Watch legal, ethical factors all week. Change is needed here. Happiness midweek! Retreat, rest Friday/Saturday. Gemini May 21-June 20: Recent delays end, but indecision continues unless you make choices based on gentle love, foreign travel/contacts, culture and intellectual pursuits, which all draw you nicely Sunday to Tuesday. The weeks ahead emphasize rest, contemplation, solitude. Retreat, plan, prepare and fulfil obligations. Contact government agencies, institutions, charitable organizations. Your spiritual side grows – and might become, June onward, a significant relationship factor. If your hopes about a special person are disappointed, alter love goals. Be ambitious Wednesday. “Half happiness” late week.
Cancer June 21-July 22: Your future looks bright! Optimism, new hopes, friends, wishes, entertainment and light romance come waltzing in. You’ll enjoy the weeks ahead – even more so because your position in the world is on the rise, your ambitions meet luck. Recent warnings about not starting anything new are now over. Sunday to Tuesday feature changes, big finances, commitments, sexual urges, lifestyle changes and health diagnosis, all productively. A partner or competitor isn’t thrilled with you, though, so proceed cautiously – all week. Gentle love might point to the right mate for you midweek! Leo July 23-Aug. 22: The emphasis for the next few weeks will be on ambition, prestige relationships, your status in the world. All looks fairly smooth here, no big highs nor deep lows. Meanwhile, your expansion (usually lucky) in love, legal, intellectual, international and cultural zones continues, especially Friday/Saturday – but work or health demands, or your caution, can interfere. Recent delays end, so charge ahead with new ideas, relationships and projects, especially Sunday to Tuesday, when exciting meetings and prospects arise! Research, financial and sexual commitments are favoured midweek. Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: A mellow, understanding vibe fills the weeks ahead. This promotes gentle love, far travel, intellectual pursuits, legal and cultural affairs, education and publishing. Recent delays dissolve; you no longer need to avoid new projects. Tackle chores Sunday to Tuesday – everything runs smoothly. One caution: the first half of this week might cause a barrier in income zones, or a conflict between sexual desire and ethics. This continues more softly, “workably” the last half. You face different relationships now to 2025, in love, business, with the public – think “enchanted.”

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: A month of mystery, depths, investment, financial manoeuvres, intimacy, commitment, lifestyle changes, health diagnosis and detective work lies ahead. Your life might change. You’re in a powerful and unpredictable relationship trend. So far (early 2011) this might have been more talk than action, but this week and May could cement you in the age-old way. Don’t expect smooth sailing for eight years – but do expect excitement! Whatever occurs this month could “return” in a hugely lucky way June 2011-June 2012. Romance, Sunday-Tuesday. But you must change! “Security” sabotages. Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: The weeks ahead emphasize relationships and opportunities. Be diplomatic, eager and willing. Don’t stubbornly cling to an outmoded position, especially at work or in health areas. Recent delays and indecisiveness end – charge ahead, especially on work and machinery fronts. A co-worker might oppose you, although the opposition’s subtle, might exist “between the lines” in a conversation or email, etc. You’ll win such a struggle, but might lose a friend: i.e., win the battle, lose the war. Be forgiving! Home, rest are both sweet Sunday to Tuesday. Romance, beauty call midweek. Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: You’re in the midst of a lucky, pleasure-filled, scholastic, romantic, creative surge! (January to June.) But the four weeks ahead emphasize work, health, machinery, duties and dependents. Ah, well – it will run smoothly, anyway. (Except, perhaps, for a wee struggle around midweek when life dictates that you must choose between love and money – with money exercising the most influence. This, of course, steers you back toward work.) Recent delays and indecision pass now. Travel, errands and paperwork fill SundayTuesday. Home, midweek. Romance late week – sober, then strong!
Classified On-Line
Apr. 24 - April 30 Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: Recent delays end. Charge forward with new ventures, relationships and situations. The weeks ahead emphasize romance, speculation, risks, good luck, children, beauty, creativity, pleasure and sports – you’ll ride a winning streak! You face a choice now: on one side are your ambition, your natural personality; on the other lies love. If the love is in your home, you become protective, nurturing. If the love is “outside,” you might unconsciously press it, to end it. Chase money Sunday-Tuesday. Casual friends, talk, travel midweek. Home, security Friday/Saturday – buy it! Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: The weeks ahead accent security, domesticity, rest (hibernation) gardening, nutrition, soul, stomach, Mother Nature. Look over your retirement fund/plans, protect your children and their future, repair the house, etc. And settle back every once in a while to observe what you’re doing – present interests and inclinations hold a clue to where the riches lie in a very lucky period on the horizon – June 2011 to June 2012. That time might bring a new, better home, the end of an oppressive situation, a child, good things! Your energy and charisma rise nicely Sunday to Tuesday. Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: Delays end – so do mistakes, and wrong-headed money decisions. If needed, correct, alter course now. If you need a guide, look at your long-term future, envision it, where you want to be, and reconsider, alter money directions to suit that future. This works best midweek. The Thursday-Saturday period emphasizes a slightly different money trend: your earnings versus your net worth, debts, ability to “grow.” (E.g., do I work for wages or start a business?) You might start something that will grow big in money areas! Retreat early week. Your energy, charisma soar midweek. timstephens@shaw.ca • Reading: 416-686-5014
