The Orange Crush of left-wing support that swept across Burnaby and the rest of the country on Monday night may not be over. With a municipal election in November and a possible snap provincial election call in the offing, the mood of NDP supporters at the Burnaby Firefighters Club on Monday night was nothing short of ecstatic. “It’s a sweet night,” said Marcel Marsolais, New Westminster CUPE Local 49 president. “People are saying it’s bittersweet because the Conservatives won a majority, but it’s a sweet, sweet night.” Marsolais said Monday’s result bodes well for the election fights to come, especially since the same people making calls and organizing supporters provincially and municipally will be buoyed by the federal win. “We’ve made some huge gains, and that always bodes well for the future,” said Marsolais. Burnaby Mayor Derek Corrigan said seeing so many voters move to the left is a good sign. “Absolutely, I’m encouraged,” said Corrigan. “I think people understand that the (Michael) Ignatieff Liberals are the federal wing of Christy Clark’s provincial Liberals. ... We’re in a situation now where we hope (Clark’s) Liberals do call an election.” As for his own fight for a job in November, Corrigan said he’s excited for the challenge. “Bring it on,” he said. “I’m ready for the election now.” And as if on cue, Corrigan was in election mode when asked about a possible future competitor, former Burnaby councillor and defeated Burnaby-New Westminster Liberal Garth Evans. “I think Garth got a rude introduction to federal politics,” said Corrigan. “He’s suffered the wrath of the voters once again.” Corrigan’s wife, Kathy, the NDP MLA for Burnaby-Deer Lake, was appropriately dressed in a bright orange jacket that was the colour of the night. Kathy said she had a good feeling about Crush Page 9

BURNABY-NEW WESTMINSTER

Julian takes fourth term in seven years Alfie Lau

staff reporter

For the fourth time in seven years, Peter Julian will be going to Ottawa as a victorious MP. But this time, he’s bringing a lot more friends with him. The NDP made a stunning breakthrough nationally, winning 102 seats and becoming the official Opposition to the Conservatives, who, with 167 seats, got the majority government they’ve been looking for since 2004. As one of the most veteran NDP members in Ottawa, Julian seems poised for a senior role in the new NDP opposition. “It feels good,” said Julian shortly after 8:30 p.m. Monday, after the television networks had declared him a winner. “This is unprecedented, and I think it shows how hard our team worked, especially the number of young people who contributed to this campaign.” Julian said he couldn’t have been any happier with how things went both locally and nationally for the NDP. “It’s a pretty dramatic shift in Canadian politics,” said Julian “What clearly has changed is Canadians, in a very real way, have turned to the NDP to be the government-in-waiting, the alternative government to the Conservatives.” Among the first to congratulate Julian were Kathy and Derek Corrigan. “Peter has always been very competent, but now, he’ll have a higher public profile and more opportunities to speak on behalf of Burnaby,” said Kathy, the MLA for Burnaby-Deer Lake. Burnaby Mayor Derek Corrigan was even more effusive in his praise. “Peter’s future is unlimited,” said Derek. “I think we’ll see how great his potential is with the NDP becoming the official Opposition.” Julian’s victory was never in doubt, as he increased his popular vote to almost 50 per cent of the 44,719 ballots cast in Burnaby-New Westminster. Julian’s 22,193 votes dwarfed Forseth’s 15,979, as Julian’s 49.6 per cent of the votes was almost 14 per cent higher than Forseth’s 35.7 per cent. Liberal Garth Evans finished a distant third, with 4,496 votes, or 10.1 per cent, while Green candidate Carrie McLaren got 1,788 votes, or four per cent. Also receiving votes were Libertarian Tyler Pierce, with 167 votes, and MarxistLeninist Joseph Theriault, with 96 votes. Voter turnout was only 53.9 per cent, as there were 83,029 registered voters in Burnaby-New Westminster. Forseth took his defeat in stride, and the mood was bittersweet at the local Conservative party held at the Best Western Kings Inn on Kingsway. “It’s just like it was in 2006,” said Forseth. “That year, the Conservatives got back into government and

Heights parkade still closed to the public Janaya Fuller-Evans staff reporter

An underground parkade in the Burnaby Heights neighbourhood should only be available for use by the business community, the city’s engineering department has concluded. The parkade at 485 MacDonald was shut temporarily to the public in 2009 because of the cost of maintaining, cleaning and repairing it. That closure to the public should be made permanent, according to a staff report to the community development committee, with businesses able to lease spaces for employees at a rate of $10 per month. It is believed this would address cost concerns of merchants, the report stated, and free up parking in the area. Merchants questioned the controversial closure of the parkade, which has a lack of public parking spaces, earlier this year. K. J. Eom, manager of the Regent Fish Market, and Max Kasaei, who runs the Heights Meat and Deli, spoke about the closure at a council meeting in February. “After the parkade closed, we saw an immediate, not a gradual, drop,” Eom told council at the meeting. He estimated the amount of customers had dropped by 25 per cent following the closure. Eom and Kasaei brought a petition signed by business owners in the 3900 and 4000 blocks of Hastings Street but told council they were not representing the Heights Merchants Association. Customers can park on Pender and

Gilmore, Hastings Street, or along MacDonald, but space goes fast, the pair explained, adding that the HOV lane cut into available parking on Hastings Street. With a new pharmacy and medical offices in the Regent Building, Eom added, parking would become scarcer. “Everyday I hear complaints from customers that they can’t find parking,” he said, adding that for every one complaint he hears, he estimates there are nine customers who are silently unhappy. Representatives of the Burnaby Heights Merchants Association have also spoken to council and staff about the parkade on behalf of the association’s members. The association conducted an informal survey of 35 businesses in the 3900 and 4000 blocks of Hastings Street, according to the staff report. Owners were concerned about a lack of customer parking, particularly on the south side of the street where afternoon rush hour parking regulations are in effect, the survey stated. Opinions on the parkade closure were mixed, with businesses on the south side of the 4000 block most strongly supporting reopening the parkade. Some businesses were interested in leasing a total of 14 spaces in the parkade, which has 46 spaces. Leasing costs and the security of the parkade were issues for merchants, according to the survey, and many were not interested in leasing spaces because staff either took transit or parked on the side streets. Ideally, the association wanted the parkade to be fully open to the public and monitored by a security attendant.

BURNABY-DOUGLAS RIDING

Stewart wins tight race in Burnaby-Douglas Brent Richter staff reporter

It was the tight race everyone expected it to be, but New Democratic Party candidate Kennedy Stewart has, unofficially, won Burnaby-Douglas, and the riding remains in NDP hands. “It’s such an honour. Burnaby is such a wonderful city, and Burnaby-Douglas is such a historic constituency and riding. Burnaby’s a great place to live but I’d like to try to make it a little better,” Stewart said in an interview Tuesday morning. Stewart finished the night with 20,943 votes, compared to Conservative candidate Ronald Leung’s 19,932. Liberal Ken Low came in a distant third with 5,451 while the Green’s Adrianne Merlo netted 1,754. Those numbers are unofficial and represent totals as of May 3. But even as of press time on Tuesday, Leung was still not ready to concede defeat. Brock Stephenson, Leung’s campaign manager, said nothing has changed since Monday night when Leung was not ready to concede until he had had a chance to speak with his campaign and possibly Elections Canada or Conservative Party headquarters. “Ronald has not made any comment since last night, so there has not been any change. We are still waiting to speak to the party’s legal counsel,” Stephenson said. Leung said the results were close enough to merit having another look at the votes, just as a precaution, even though he had no specific reason to suspect anything had gone wrong in counting the ballots.

If confirmed, Stewart finds himself a rookie member of Parliament joining 101 other NDP MPs, who will now form the official Opposition to the majority Conservative government, which picked up 167 seats in Ottawa. Stewart said he is thrilled at the prospect of the NDP becoming the official Opposition in the House of Commons and that it speaks to Canadian’s desire for “positive opposition” in government. But his voice goes somber when asked about the fact that opposition will be to a Conservative majority. “I think that Canadians are probably going to witness something that they haven’t seen before in Canada, which is quite a destructive agenda, and it will start right away, which is worrying,” he said. “They showed us a little bit of what they were planning when they had a minority, but this majority is going to be something that we are going to have to work every day to make sure we scrutinize and try to keep as many of the social programs as we can.” Stewart said he sees being a first-time MP as a good thing because it means he doesn’t carry any of the baggage that comes with being part of the long-term establishment. “I think that’s a healthy thing, generally. I think we really needed something new to happen in Ottawa, and we definitely have that now. There’s so many people there that don’t have the same old ties and old hangups,” he said. Leung said if the results are finalized, he will understand and agree.

Tenuous win: Kennedy Stewart (left), NDP candidate for Burnaby Douglas, stands with his wife Jeanette Ashe while addressing supporters Monday night. “This is a decision of the people in this riding, and I accept their voice. I think this is a very strong NDP riding historically for the last 31 years,” he said. Leung said it is tough to win in a riding that is staunchly aligned with unions and the NDP at both the provincial and municipal levels. Low said he was surprised by the Liberals being decimated across Canada. “I didn’t really see that coming,” he said given the hard work, door-knocking, cam-

paign calls and good performances in all of the all-candidates debates. Low said it is time for the Liberals to “rebuild” and it is far too early to tell if he will run again. Merlo said the results were “pretty much what (she) expected,” but she is thrilled to see that Green Party leader Elizabeth May has won a set in Parliament. Lewis Clarke Dahlby (Libertarian) pulled in 420 votes, George Gidora (Communist) counted 155 and Brian Sproule (MarxistLeninist) picked up 57.

do believe Canadians were tired of the bickering and threats of elections, and simply wanted it all to end for awhile. And, frankly, we also believe that a lot of Canadians voted with their ‘gut’. Harper was a known quantity and Jack Layton, while you may disagree with the NDP policies, has also gained a credible reputation. Michael Ignatieff, unfortunately, just never came across as someone who was either in it for the long haul, or gave off a real sense of

who he is. While the Conservatives may indeed have won more seats, they are presiding over a country that, by popular vote, reflects far more of a centrist even-handed view of the economy, social justice and concern for the environment. Congratulations, Mr. Harper, you worked hard and deserve full credit for a well-fought campaign. Now, don’t go all George W. Bush on Canada and turn that win into a future loss.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Questions on gay-positive policy Dear Editor:

I would like to respond to Jennifer Moreau’s article entitled “Parents protest gay-positive policy” (Burnaby NOW, April 30). I am in complete agreement with a school trustee policy that would protect the safety of students and teachers alike who happen to be lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, transsexual, two-spirit and queer (referred to as LGBTQ in the article and below in my email here). The enforcement of this, like school bullying, is quite another matter. As we have seen, school bullying still happens on a regular basis worldwide, and I would assume that threats towards the LGBTQ teachers and students in particular also continue, with the sometimes deadly consequences we see on television

and in the printed media. Question number 1 not addressed in the article is: How would the school trustees, school principals and teachers enforce this safety policy towards LGBTQ, and which penalties would be made mandatory and which corrective behaviour policies would be enforced, if any? A policy without enforcement shows lack of will and/or commitment to change, in my opinion. Agreeing with a policy to protect LGBTQ teachers and students from harm is one thing, but to agree with freedom of expression by LGBTQ teachers in the classroom without specific restrictions is quite another. Currently public school teachers are not allowed to express exclusive Christian/biblical views or pray in the classroom with their students, which could be seen as favouring Christianity over other religions

or held beliefs. Clearly this is an imposed restriction made on teachers to “protect” the student from influences that the school boards, trustees, some teachers and parents deem inappropriate. Here are questions number 2 and 3: Should school boards and parents not have the right to limit the expression of LGBTQ teachers when it comes to discussions and readings about LGBTQ sex, sexual orientation and expression in the classroom, especially when it is deemed offensive and threatening to the moral standards of those parents who have strong spiritual beliefs? And if so, what policies and enforcement would the school board and its trustees make in this regard? Unfortunately, the article did not specifically address my questions that are a vital part of this discussion, in my opinion. I am a Christian with strong scriptural beliefs which teach me to love each and everyone (including LGBTQ members of our society), even my enemies, while at the same time upholding God’s standards for living in myself, and in my relationships with others and to stand up for the weak and most vulnerable in society. As such, I cannot approve of the standards and practices that LGBTQ use to define their lives and relationships with

others when it comes to sex and sexual expressions as it relates to children in the classroom, whose young minds are being shaped by what they hear from adults in the classroom. I look forward to hearing a response to my three questions in here by you, school trustees and teachers, parents and Burnaby NOW readers. In the love and holiness of God, Maurice Harting, by email

New policy is welcomed Dear Editor:

I am proud to be a Burnaby resident, and even more proud that my daughter will next year attend a school whose board encourages support of LGBTQ students and/or staff. The question is not whether you believe it morally acceptable to be a lesbian, gay, transgendered, bisexual or queer person, but whether it is morally acceptable to tolerate bullying, harrassment or exclusion of any person, regardless of their sex, religion, race, colour or how they choose to identify themselves. All people have something to contribute to the world and all are worthy. Congratulations, Burnaby! NDP: Challenges facing Dix continued from page 6

The grumbling over the treatment of Farnworth and his supporters will likely fade away rather quickly. But Dix should remember he wasn’t the choice of an overwhelming majority of party members. His victory margin – 52 to 48 per cent – was exactly the same as the premier’s margin. He had fewer caucus endorsements than either Farnworth or Horgan. And given that his campaign signed up more than 5,000 members of the South Asian community in Surrey and its environs (representing half of his final ballot tally), Dix can hardly argue he has a strong, broad base of support throughout the province or the party. One of Dix’s political mentors, of course, is former premier Glen Clark, for whom he worked, first

as ministerial assistant and then as chief of staff in the premier’s office. I’ve always thought one of Clark’s big mistakes as premier was putting only those people who shared his class warrior views in key positions in government, either in the caucus or among staffers. As a result, whenever he made a mistake, the only people he would turn to were those who reinforced his views, rather than challenging them or changing them. It will be interesting to see if Dix makes the same mistake in the months ahead. ◆ Dealing with his caucus is one thing, but Dix already seems to have more potentially serious problems with a much larger group: the B.C. business community. Just after he won the NDP leadership, I was a panelist (along with for-

mer NDP premier Dan Miller, longtime civil servant Chris Trumpy and the co-chair of the premier’s leadership bid, Sharon White) at a breakfast gathering in Vancouver to discuss the shifting political landscape. More than 100 people – mostly business leaders, political consultants, and industry group representatives – attended, and they seemed to share a uniformly negative view of Dix, almost to the point of actually fearing him. Based on that breakfast talk, I think the NDP can forget about any hope of successfully “reaching out” to the business community. Then again, being the class warrior that he is, I doubt Dix has any plans to try that approach anyway. Keith Baldrey is chief political reporter for Global B.C.

Go to burnabynow.com/live-green

Burnaby firefighters are still investigating the cause of a fire in a Metrotown area highrise which sent a number of people to hospital on Friday morning but it appears an old fridge may be to blame “There has been an older model refrigerator released to the insurance company who are going to be sending it to an electrical engineer for testing,” said Joe Tylor, Burnaby fire investigator. “There was a statement from the building occupants that they had heard some popping sounds coming from the direction of the refrigFirst reported @ erator and saw smoke BurnabyNow.com coming up behind the fridge.” Assistant chief Mark Wilson of the Burnaby Fire Department said the fire broke out in a 10th floor apartment at 6220 McKay Ave. near Kingsborough Street around 8 a.m. “The suite was pretty much gutted. There was no one in the suite when our crews entered and they didn’t find anybody in there, so that’s always good,” he said. Wilson said about 20 residents and a few RCMP officers who helped with evacuating the upper floors were taken to Burnaby Hospital as a precaution and treated for smoke inhalation. Given the size of the building, he said, that is a relatively low number. Wilson said it did not take long to put the fire out. “For the most part, these concrete highrises fires are easy to fight. They’re pretty well confined with concrete between floors but they are hot. It’s like an oven in there because they tend to contain all the heat,” he said.

When the four-term Ottawa MP – Forseth won in 1993, 1997, 2000 and 2004 previously - wanted to re-enter federal politics, he had to take on Julian, another multi-term incumbent, in Burnaby-New Westminster. Forseth has waited out close battles before, having won via a judicial recount in 2004, but Monday night left little doubt who would be representing Burnaby-New Westminster in Ottawa. Forseth was sitting amongst a small group of supporters as Stephen Harper gave his election night speech on television. He thanked his supporters for all the work they had done, but even Forseth knew that beating Julian was an almost impossible task. “I wouldn’t have done anything differently,” said Forseth. “We had a good team. We offered a candidate with 12 years of experience in Ottawa, but that wasn’t enough.” Forseth also took the chance to thank Julian for conducting a civil and respectful

Celebrating Mom ON COOKING

M

Chef Dez

other’s Day is approaching and it is not only a day to spend time with your mom, grandmother or wife but also to remember and reminisce. As a child, my mom was the biggest influence on my life and upbringing. Being a single parent of four children for many years, she persevered through many of life’s obstacles to ensure a suitable developmental environment for all of us. There are many examples of her dedication to motherhood, but the fire of culinary aspirations that she fuelled within me is something that I am forever grateful for. Ever since I can remember, she was always there to offer me a spot beside her in the kitchen. While other boys my age were involved in various sports activities, my idea of a team was right there in our home. Still to this day, I can almost hear the scuffing of the old wooden footstool as I dragged it across the floor. There I would stand upon the flour-dusted crevices as she secured my apron readying me for our next culinary adventure. Many of our kitchen conversations were a journey back in time. Descriptive adventures of what life was like when she was a child were what I loved the most. Her parents migrated to Canada from Germany in the early 1930s, and they worked the land as farmers in Saskatchewan. Stories of the brutally cold winters and how most of their meals came from their crops and the pigs that they raised always kept me captivated. As a child, she too was always by her mom’s side in the kitchen. It was there that she gained the culinary skills that were passed on to me. Many of the meals that I was exposed to as a child were influenced by not only her German heritage, but also by the

underprivileged lifestyle of fortuneless farmers. Creative simplicity was always the focus as we transformed everyday ingredients into something incredible. Some of the most memorable foods for me that stimulate thoughts of my childhood are rice pudding, cherry soup and sugared milk bread slices. “The way to a man’s heart is through his stom-

ach,” but it is also the way to many great memories. Thank you, Mom, for the laughter, the tears, the guidance, and the years. You are always on my mind. My Artist’s Corner – or MAC for short – is holding its spring show at the Shadbolt on Saturday, May 7, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. The World of MAC show will feature works by members of the group, which is made up of artists who live with mental illness. “We value the opportunity, in terms of space, time and materials, to create art which in turn increases self-confidence, reduces isolation and helps in developing social skills,” the group’s mission statement explains. “As we build supportive relationships with our peers, we find new ways to express ourselves and to forge new connections with the larger community.” MAC has just started its fourth year of operation and, according to its website, has reached 28 members – with 18 to 20 people regularly at its classes. The group is active in

Composer wins

A young composer from UBC carried off the Audience Favourite honours at Phoenix Chamber Choir’s Revelations III concert Saturday night. Matthew Emery earned the honour during the concert held at Shaughnessy Heights United Church in Vancouver. Phoenix, for those who don’t know, is a Burnabybased choir under the direction of Ramona Luengen. The choir’s spring concert featured work by seven student composers who took part in Phoenix’s Young Composers Development Program this season. The seven young composers’ pieces were chosen by the choir for inclusion in the concert, from works by 15 young composers who took part in the program. The audience had a chance to vote for their favourite of the pieces, and Emery’s Longing – a setting of Matthew Arnold’s text – emerged on top.

Also included in the program were works by Trevor Hoffman, Chris Sivak, Naithan Bosse, Matthew Smith, Winston Lanyon and the program’s youngest participant, 14year-old Adam Zolty of Eric Hamber Secondary School. And yes, those who read this column regularly will know, I was indeed in the alto ranks for the concert. I must add my personal thanks to all the composers for creating such beautiful work for us to sing – and my personal kudos to Matthew Smith and Winston Lanyon, who are also both choir colleagues. If you happened to miss us Saturday night, that was our season ending concert, but Phoenix will be back for 2011/12 – keep an eye out for on all the news at www.phoenixchamber choir.bc.ca.

without their mouth watering? That, by the way, is on the menu for Nourish, a benefit luncheon this coming Saturday, May 7. Hart House is hosting the luncheon in support of the Burnaby Art Gallery. Hart House chef Kris Kabush is preparing a delectable menu for the occasion – including the above, or, if you prefer, a vegetarian option (vegetable and chick pea fritter). And, to top it all off, you may enjoy lemon tart with raspberry paint. Live music and a chance to take home a framed Gordon Smith serigraph will also be offered. Money raised will support the Burnaby Art Gallery’s education programs. Tickets are $100, including a $50 tax receipt, and can be bought through the Shadbolt Centre box office at 604-205-3000 or by calling the gallery at 604-2974422. Do you have an item for Lively City? Hats off to our volunteers On the Heights, we’ve got a full roster of special communityoriented events. But what makes our events truly special is our volunteers. These volunteers help out with a wide array of activities, including helping set up our festival activities at Light up the Heights, playing hockey with the crowd on Hats Off Day, or delivering important information to our local merchants. Whatever they may do, we definitely appreciate their dedication and support. In fact, many of our volunteers live right here in our

neighbourhood and love the Heights as much as we do. An event the size of Hats Off Day is only made possible because of a strong team of volunteers, and with Hats Off Day exactly one month away, we’re hoping that even more Heights residents will help us out this year. Whether you’re 16 or 76, there is a variety of activities that you can help out with, whatever your skill set may be. And even when we don’t have an event coming up, we can still use your help at different times of the year.

Volunteers help build our community events and therefore help build our community. We appreciate all of your support. If you’re interested, please send us an email at volunteer@ burnabyheights.com. For up-to-the-minute information, connect with us on social media at www.facebook.com/ BurnabyHeights and www.twitter. com/BurnabyHeights. A treasure trove of gems to be found at the store By Ashley Owens

If you have been searching for that perfect piece of dino dung, you can stop looking. Coprolite — known as fossilized dung — is one of the many interesting stones that can be scooped up at Mountain Gems Ltd. near Hastings and Alpha in Burnaby. The store has been open for about 16 years, carrying fossils, stones, equipment, books and even specialized knives with stone handles. Store items range from 25 cents to about $3,000. Staff at Mountain Gems cater to the metaphysical community, regular customers and even the film industry. “There are a lot of people that believe that stones can heal,” said store merchant and teacher Rose Wilson. “If somebody’s got a heart condition, what stone can

they wear that might help them?” And due to those types of questions, the staff keeps a book of stones and metaphysical connections. “Supernatural powers and all the rest of it — I just want it to be,” said owner Bruce MacLellan. He encourages customers to come back and tell him which stones work. Many others frequent the store as well. Students can take a variety of classes in the basement of Mountain Gems Ltd. Everything from wiring to casting to silver smithing — and classes tend to fill up quickly. “Some just do it simply for interest, others take off with it and do it as a business,” Wilson said. The teachers consist of about four staff members who have become specialized in certain crafts. There are usually between three to four classes per week ranging

There are between 10 and 30 customers that come in and out of the shop per day, according to Wilson. But she said that some days there could be as many as 300 — some in search of props for movie sets. “We’ve had about four or five set people in the past two weeks,” she said. While MacLellan said he does not get much “walk-by traffic,” he thinks that the Heights is an excellent area with interesting stores and development. MacLellan said that most customers search for rock shops online and find his store that way. But that might not be the only way he reels in business. “My mother puts citrine tumbled stones in the till just to encourage money,” he said.

About KIDS ALL

How to help kids deal with their feelings PARENTING Kathy Lynn

“Is that good news?” That is one way to respond to the information that your friend is pregnant. Unless she comes bounding up to you, grinning from ear to ear and doing a victory dance, you may not know how she is feeling. So, rather than assume that you know what she’s feeling, you can ask and find out. Then you can respond in a way that is both appropriate and helpful. Dealing with feelings can be a challenge. And if it’s tough for us, it’s really tough for our kids. We need to help them to understand the nature of feelings so they can better handle both their own feelings and those of other people. Let them know that their feelings are OK. Feelings are normal, and everyone has them. Sometimes there are so many things going on in their lives that they just can’t figure out how they should be feeling. Then they figure that these emotions are bad and that they should be able to get rid of them. It’s important for us to let our kids know that we all have feelings and that sometimes it’s confusing, but it’s acceptable and the trick is to learn how to express them in helpful and useful ways. Most kids live in the present and don’t understand that feelings can change, that if they are sad now they won’t stay that way forever. They may be sad now because they can’t play with their

dad who’s at work, but they may be happy later when Dad comes home and plays with them. Once they learn that feelings can change, it’s easier to cope with a lousy feeling because they needn’t feel that way forever. It’s easy for kids to confuse feelings with actions, so we teach them that the two are different. It’s OK to be angry with Mommy but it’s not OK to hit her. The feeling is OK; the action is not. You teach them by pointing out the differ-

ence. “It’s great that you love our puppy, but you may not pull her tail, that hurts her.” There are many ways to express feelings. Youngsters are often dramatic: crying, screaming or hitting. They can also be overly enthusiastic when feeling good by running around excitedly, speaking loudly or jumping up and down. We can teach them other ways to demonstrate their feelings. We do it by talking to them but also

MOTHER’S DAY Gifts that keep on giving If you ask any mom … she will tell you that not a day goes by that she isn’t thinking about or worrying about her children. Therefore, Mother’s Day is a time to show your mom how much you appreciate all the time, worry and love she has put into raising you. Give her a gift that is a constant reminder of your love for her. • Make the traditional unique: While picture frames and greeting cards are thoughtful, make them all the more unique by purchasing ones that allow you to leave a message with a voice recording on it. Whenever your mom reads the card or looks at the picture in the frame she can hear your sweet voice accompanying it every time.

• Sponsor a child: This monthly donation to a charity will not only be a reminder each month of the difference that has been made in her name, but she will also receive a letter and photo of her sponsored child so she can learn about the needs of those in other countries. This gift shows her that she has raised you to follow her example of responsibility and compassion. • Purchase a magazine subscription: Select a magazine that matches your mom’s interests and order a full year’s subscription. Each month when she receives her gift, she will remember how much you love her. This will also remind her to take some time to relax and indulge her interests each month. — News Canada

Simply but sincerely t’s worth knowing that even a clumsy “thank you” can often be the brightest spot in someone else’s day. “It’s true that a well–timed expression of gratitude can be an extremely powerful force,” says Dino Caporiccio at Storck Canada. “Experts tell us that any gesture of appreciation triggers energy in a positive headspace.” Here are a few tips to make your heartfelt gesture a success every time: • Remind yourself about the most outstanding quality in the person receiving your thanks. • Think about the nicest thing anyone ever said to

you — and see if something similar fits. • Tell the person that their act of kindness went far beyond expectations and how good it made you feel. • If you fear spoken words will fail you, say it with a small but meaningful gift. Some of the

more popular options are flowerpots, lucky charms, personalized keepsakes and quality chocolate like the appropriate, merci. • Keep it light and use humour. Remember that the object of your gratitude has probably been in your shoes. — News Canada

Royals lose in heartbreaking Cup final Burnaby’s u-14 team falls to Victoria Capitals in a 4-3 shootout for Coastal Cup Alfie Lau

staff reporter

There were no words that coaches Wayne Shaw, Mark Berry and Brad Achtem could say to their u-14 Burnaby Royals to make them feel better. The Royals had just lost a 4-3 shootout (2-2 in regulation time) to the Victoria Capitals 97 in the u-14 Coastal Cup A final at Minoru Park in Richmond, and none of the boys could even look up at their coaches. “You’ll learn from this,” said Berry. “Remember how lousy this feels. You have no reason to keep your heads down. You gave everything you had, and somebody had to lose.” The Royals had fought back from 10 and 2-1 deficits on goals from Jacob McMahon and Christian Nichele and looked on their way to victory when goalkeeper Luciano Trasolini made a diving hand save on the Capitals’ first shot in the penalty shootout. But successive misses by the Royals, first Max Williams hitting the post and then Joel Padmore hitting the crossbar, doomed the Royals to runner-up status. On both misses, the Victoria keeper was clearly beaten, but the iron proved to be too much for the Royals. “We couldn’t have asked for any more from the boys,” said Berry. “They showed a tremendous amount of heart coming back, but they just ran out of gas at the end.” Because of a realignment in the development program, the loss was actually the final game for the boys as a team. “Some of these boys will still end up playing with each other, but some will go off and play for other teams,” said Berry. “It’s a shame they couldn’t have gone off together with a win.” Berry said the team’s resiliency was

shootout, getting a hand on the final Victoria shot, but not enough, as it slipped underneath his outstretched fingers and into the bottom corner of the net. “He guessed the right side, but sometimes you need luck as well,” said Berry. Berry said the unusually warm weather also played a part in the final result.

“Everybody was really tired because it was a lot warmer (Sunday) than any other game or practice this year,” said Berry. “I told them before the extra time that they just had two 10-minute halves to go, and it wasn’t going to be easy. … It would have been nice to be celebrating a win, but they gave everything they had.”

Cliff Avenue Synergy wins Cup title Burnaby u-18 girls down Langley, 3-2, after hard-fought game in Coastal Cup A final Alfie Lau

staff reporter

The Cliff Avenue Synergy u18 girls let their play do the talking on Sunday afternoon at Minoru Park in Richmond. The Synergy downed Langley FC Metro 3-2 in the u-18 girls’ Coastal Cup A final in a match marked by trash talking and hard fouls. The Synergy jumped out to a 2-0 halftime lead on goals by Emily Ancill and Ashley Gilmore

and looked on an easy road to victory after a second-half penalty conversion by Sam Drescher. But Langley got two goals back and were within a missed penalty of forcing the game to extra time before the time ran out on Langley. Gilmore’s goal exemplified the heart of the Synergy, as she beat the Langley keeper to a ball and headed it into the gaping net. “I think that goal shows what we’re made of,” said coach Mark Pennington. “Every single girl on this team puts everything into the game and we just outwork other teams. … Ashley got to that ball because she wanted it more.” Gilmore said she had extra

The Synergy will now await word from an Interior team on whether it wants to challenge the Synergy for a berth into the national championships later this year. www.twitter.com/AlfieLau

Having already earned automatic qualification into the provincial championships this July in Penticton, the u-17 South Burnaby Spitfires didn’t look that interested in a Coastal Cup final against Lakehill Emery Electric of Victoria. And it was that complacency that led to a 1-0 loss on Sunday afternoon at Minoru Park in Richmond. “We didn’t have a great week of practice, and I think it showed out there,” said coach Bob Dumont. “We’re a team that has struggled to score goals all year, and that came back to bite us today.” The only goal came in the first half, when Lakehill’s Adam Almeida beat South Burnaby goalkeeper Anis Ali to a long goal kick and headed it into the open net. “I just anticipated the ball and nodded it in,” said an ecstatic Almeida afterwards. “This was huge for us because last year, we got knocked out in the first round of the Coastal Cup, and now we came back and won. It’s a great feeling to win.”

Dumont had a different perspective on the winning goal. “We were controlling the game, and it was a long clearing ball that took a huge bounce,” said Dumont. “We got caught and we were a bit unlucky.” After the goal, the Island squad defended like demons before the final whistle went. “I was trying to get our guys to go up in the final 10 minutes,” said Dumont. “We just couldn’t get that bounce and that goal we needed.” Dumont said the loss should motivate his squad as the team starts preparations for July’s provincial tournament. “When these boys were u-14s, they lost the Coastal Cup final and went on to win the provincials,” he said. “We’re hoping the same thing happens this time around too. … I think they’ll learn that winning isn’t easy and you don’t get many opportunities.
