Currently, the Legion receives permissive tax exemption for its community space, but not its canteen. “Our Legions as a whole are having trouble maintaining their positions in the community,” Taylor said. “We stand out and require your support.” He pointed out that he had come to council five years before, at the start of his tenure as president, and asked for help

then. “I foresaw what was going to happen,” he said. Since then, the Legion has lost $70,000 in revenue and paid the city $240,000 in taxes and utilities, according to Taylor. If the Legion had received a full tax exemption at the time, he added, it would be in good condition today. A delegation from the Legion appeared

before council in October 2006 asking for a tax exemption. The Legion faced further challenges when the provincial smoking ban in all public places was announced in 2007. The Legion had previously constructed the Smokey Smith smoking room in 2002, at a cost of $50,000, to accommodate the smoking rules at the time. At Monday night’s meeting, Taylor was Legion Page 4

Census communications manager Peter Liang wants to remind Canadians that it’s still necessary to fill out the census forms they’ve just received in the mail. This year, it just won’t necessarily take as long. “The census remains mandatory,” said

Liang. “What has changed is the long-form census has been replaced by the new voluntary National Household Survey.” After months of controversy, Statistics Canada is now in the position of having to explain the new process to citizens and convince them to participate. Last summer, the Conservative government decided to get rid of the manda-

tory long-form census, arguing Canadians shouldn’t have to fear jail or fines for refusing to answer personal questions. The decision was widely criticized by academics, governments and business groups and led to the resignation of chief statistician Munir Sheikh. The new “short form” questionnaires contain just 10 basic questions on things

like age and marital status. Canadians can be fined up to $500 if they refuse to fill them out. “By law, every household in Canada must complete that one,” explained Liang. “Four weeks after the census, one in three households will be asked to participate in the new voluntary National Household Census Page 9

One week after a Burnaby blogger left a posthumous post after passing away from complications of colorectal cancer, his last words have become famous, with more than eight million people around the world having visited his website and the #welovederek hashtag becoming a worldwide trending topic on Twitter. Derek K. Miller, the man behind the popular website www. penmachine.com, died May 3 in the Sardis Street duplex he shared with wife Airdrie Hislop Miller and their daughters Marina, 13, and Lauren, 11. Miller’s last post was published on his blog by a friend, the following day. The heartbreaking final entry –in which Miller, 41, describes his love for his family, his sadness at not being able to be with them in the future and his lack of regrets for the life he’s led – has drawn unprecedented traffic to the site by being linked on other blogs, re-tweeted and posted on Facebook. His wife says the response has been overwhelming and she plans to maintain the blog to preserve her late husband’s digital legacy. A trust has also been set up for well-wishers who would like to contribute to the now fatherless family. City man arrested in 2008 death Brent Richter staff reporter

The integrated homicide investigative team has arrested a man in connection with a 2008 unsolved death in Burnaby. IHIT announced Monday that one man is in custody and facing charges of seconddegree murder in the 2008 death of 51-yearold Zdzislaw “Jim” Kutyla, a Polish immigrant with an import business in Vancouver. IHIT spokesperson Cpl. Dale Carr said after three years of investigation, DNA analysis and tips from the public, IHIT arrested

Steven Roy Laxon, a 22-year-old Burnaby resident, on Friday. Police were called to Kutyla’s 19th Avenue home in Burnaby on March 1, 2008 after his wife found his body. His death was ruled a homicide shortly after. At the time, police did not release Kutyla’s cause of death, but Carr now says it was “stabbing related” and police allege the murder came as a result of a domestic dispute between the two, who were once family friends. “There was clearly a dispute between these two over what appears to be some family issues,” Carr said. “It’s very unfortu-

nate.” Carr could not specify what the dispute was over because it will form a large part of the Crown’s case, should the case come to trial. Carr said investigators were able to recover several DNA samples from the home where Kutyla died, one of which has now been identified as Laxon’s. “A series of things, not just one thing, pointed at Mr. Laxon as a possible suspect,” Carr said. “We presented the evidence to Crown counsel, and they said ‘you got it,’ so we went and arrested him on Friday.”

Legion: Tax exemption for canteen could raise issues, mayor says continued from page 1

accompanied by Bill Calder, past president of Legion branch No. 114. Calder was involved in an initiative two years ago asking for tax relief for Legions across the province. The North Burnaby Legion, like others, has suffered from lower membership levels, an inability to raise funds specifically for the branch, and property taxes, he said. Legions have had a presence in Canada since 1926, Calder pointed out, and the Legion in Burnaby Heights has been there for 75 years. The Legions contribute thousands of dollars to the community and provide a broad spectrum of support, he added. “There is no restriction on what we will reach out to try to do,” Calder said, adding the organization fills a void, as not many groups have as wide mandate of support. “Our priorities have always rested with supporting community needs,” he added. Calder also stressed the difference between Legions and the local bar. “We’re not a Joe’s Pub on the corner, with profits going into our pockets,” he said. Property taxes are a major issue as Legions are property-rich and moneypoor, he said. “They have risen so dramatically,” Calder said. “Those are the things that are breaking us.” Mayor Derek Corrigan addressed the delegation, pointing out that property tax revenues from the Legions also go to worthwhile projects, such as the South Burnaby Housing Project, initiated by Legion branch No. 83, with 70 units for veterans and seniors. The only part of the Legion that is not taxexempt is the canteen, Corrigan added, and it would be difficult to profollow us on

City property taxes set to rise by 2.95 per cent Janaya Fuller-Evans staff reporter

Burnaby’s residential and business taxes will increase by 2.95 per cent, not the projected 3.95 per cent mentioned in the city’s provisional financial plan last December. The operating budget has increased from $355.355 million to $356.623 million, as well, with no cuts to programs or services, according to the city’s director of finance, Denise Jorgenson. “What we found in the first quarter (of 2011) was that revenue was trending upwards,” she said, adding it was primarily due

to building permits and development fees. She credited Burnaby city council for being open to new developments and facilitating project development. “There is so much growth and development in Burnaby,” Jorgenson said. “We’re very fortunate.” Other sources of revenue included patron charges for swimming pools, golf courses, and recreation centres; property taxes; and water and sewer levies. Directors were also asked to look at all programs, to see if anything could be cut, Jorgenson

said, but as directors had already tightened their belts when working on the provisional budget, there wasn’t much left to trim. One way the city cut back on costs was by staggering staff for seasonal work, or in some cases holding projects back a week, Jorgenson said. But Burnaby’s economy has been very strong overall, she pointed out, adding that council has been “restraint-conscious.” The city’s reserves have been strong, according to Jorgenson, and Burnaby has managed to maintain the city’s reserves and stay debt-free. Utilities are also increasing by

2.95 per cent for 2011, compared with 3.95 per cent last year. Taxes for business and residential properties increased by 3.95 per cent in 2010. Light industry property taxes increased significantly in 2011 – at 10.24 per cent compared with last year’s increase of 7.04 per cent. Planned capital expenses, now at $159.238 million, include roadwork, parks projects, acquiring land at Deer Lake Park, the Eastburn Recreation Centre, finishing the Riverway golf course clubhouse, Fire Station No. 1, widening the road at Marine Way and North Fraser Way, and upgrading the water and sewer

mains. One of the challenges the finance department had to work with was salary increases, following wage and salary agreement negotiations last year, which amounted to a four per cent increase overall, Jorgenson said. Contract provisions made up $7.710 million in the financial plan, with increases in capital funding, drainage levies, and waste disposal fees also mentioned as significant increased costs for the city. She may think that stepping onto a platform with David Eby will do her more harm than good. Eby has said that she is avoiding a debate so she can evade questions about her reign as Minister of Education from 2001 to 2004. That could be true. But we believe that by avoiding any debate she is revealing a much more troubling trait. Avoiding public scrutiny is one of the reasons the Liberals earned a well-deserved reputation for mendacity and deception. And Clark’s efforts at

Clark needs to show that she can take the heat and really display some of that “change” she said she would bring to the Liberals. Frankly, she is doing herself a disservice by ducking debates. A much touted independent panel appointed by the B.C. government finds that the HST will “likely” cost the average family $350 a year. But, says the panel headed by the former pro-business Alberta finance minister, there are “likely” bigger costs if the publicly hated tax is rejected by the coming referendum. Many readers of the report likely will have paused at this point, knowing full well what’s coming next. Sure enough, the panel sets out the already wellused argument of why B.C. families should bear the burden of the HST, notably that it is a “simpler” tax system (most of us would like a “fairer” system),

Admitting that “it is hard to put concrete numbers” to the “expected” future benefits of the HST, the panel chair proceeds to do just that by citing the “predictions” of an unidentified independent analysis that promises a richer economy and an additional 24,400 “better-paying jobs” by 2020. We’ve heard these unsupported rationalizations before, and I guess we’ll continue to hear them from now until the end of June.

Are beliefs ‘dangerous’?

Re: Parents protest gay-positive policy, Burnaby NOW, April 30. The article in the weekend’s Burnaby NOW fails to mention the main reason parents do not want draft No. 5.45 to become policy. In the words of the draft policy, the Burnaby school district aims to eradicate “heterosexism,” which is the “mistaken assumption that all people are heterosexual and that heterosexuality is superior and the norm by which all other sexual orientation and gender identities are measured. Heterosexism perpetuates negative stereotypes and is dangerous to individuals and communities.” In effect, this policy will label as “dangerous” any parents who teach their children differently according to their consciences (this extends to issues such as marriage being exclusively between one man and one woman). It is truly an attempt at suppression of freedom of thought. The anti-bullying policies so prevalent in all our schools are indeed good. Namecalling and bullying of any sort, for any reason, is wrong. However, in our society

people continually hold views contrary to those of their neighbour and are able to live in society peaceably without name calling. In fact, by counselling children that they and their parents and friends hold “dangerous beliefs,” is this not a form of name-calling or bullying in itself? Dean and Ida Gazzola, Burnaby

An open letter to the Burnaby school board: I am writing to you as a resident of Burnaby. We moved her just over a year ago and love our new city. Last month I was introduced to your draft policies regarding extending basic protection to the LGBTQ youth in our school system. Now I hear that a small but vocal bunch is fighting your proposals. I’ll wager that some of the children of those folks likely need this type of support in their schools. Especially if they are not getting it at home. There have been enough suicides by youth to make those tears fill Burnaby Lake. Please know that you have many constituents and parents in this community that wish you will go forward with this draft proposal. We would also like to see policies about enforcement developed that make our schools a safe place for all students. We trust those are coming. You have been elected to show leadership, please follow through without being sidetracked by those that preach hatred, even if out of ignorance. Perhaps there will be lessons learned by those parents eventually.

If the HST goes down to defeat, the B.C. government will have a $2-billion hole blown in its finances at a time when it can least

HST: Will Clark reduce the tax? hinting about changes looming for the tax. More exemptions, perhaps, or giving more people financial rebates (more than one million people with low incomes already get quarterly cheques sent to them) are among the possibilities. Those HST rebates, by the way, are another example of how the government keeps fumbling the ball on this issue. I suspect relatively few of those who get those rebate cheques even link them to the HST. The cheques themselves actually come through Ottawa, and the amount is lumped in with a carbon tax credit. It’s not obvious to those

afford such a calamity, so bold action is required. Clark has undone a number of policies she inherited from the Campbell administration. She’s raised the minimum wage, partially restored gaming grants to charities, gotten rid of parking meters in provincial parks, and looks to be fostering a positive new dialogue with the province’s teachers. Will she add reducing the HST to her list? If she wants to keep the tax – and she says she does – it represents her only hope for getting a majority of British Columbians to agree with her. The gondola line to Simon Fraser University is going to public consultations in Phase 2 of the business case study for the project this month. The proposed gondola could run from Production Way SkyTrain station to the campus, though other spots – connections at Lake City Way and the future Burquitlam station – are also being considered. TransLink began meeting with stakeholders – including students, recreational users, environmental advocates and residents – in the area last fall. The project is estimated to cost $70 million, with funding options still being explored. Trolley buses, SkyTrain and rack or funicular railways are also being considered as possible transportation options for the SFU community, according to a City of Burnaby report. The first consultations are on Wednesday, May 25, at Cameron Elementary School at 5 and 8 p.m. Project presentations will take place at the school, at 9540 Erickson Dr., at 5:30 and 7 p.m. The second round of consultations is the following day, May 26, at the Saywell Hall Atrium at SFU, between 1 and 4 p.m., and

A disgruntled group of land owners petitioned the provincial government for the creation of Burnaby in 1892 with the sole purpose of improving roads and access to their properties. Frustrated with seeing their tax dollars sent to Victoria and not spent on local improvements, a group of land owners established a committee to seek Municipal status for the District of Burnaby. Their campaign was successful and on September 22, 1892, the Letters Patent were signed in Victoria to formally incorporate the District Municipality of Burnaby.

“In Burnaby, in 2006, more than half of residents were allophones, meaning their mother tongue was not English or French,” he said. “We have a census help line which is open in many different languages where questions have been translated into 20 different languages.” This year’s census has a few new questions, including asking about carpooling, daily commute times, child-care expenses and spousal support. Critics say making the long-form voluntary could under-represent groups who won’t bother to fill it out, such as the poor and visible minorities. TuesdaynightatBurnaby school board offices (after Burnaby NOW press deadlines) promised to be lively as both opponents and supporters of the district’s proposed gay-positive policy planned protests. School board chair Larry Hayes is surprised at the intensity and passion of local parents and students. “This draft policy has nothing to do with sex or sex education,” said Hayes. “This is about not ignoring the fact we have students who are different ... and we have to be proactive, not reactive, in developing anti-homophobia and antibullying policies. ... It’s our moral obligation to be proactive.” On April 26 Burnaby school trustees presented a draft policy to support students and employees who are (or are assumed to be) lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, transsexual or queer (LGBTQ). The policy’s objective is to ensure all school community members learn to work together in an atmosphere of respect and safety “free from homophobia, transphobia, antigay harassment and exclusion, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.” But some local parents believe the district hasn’t done enough to solicit feedback from them. Burnaby students are also expected to let their thoughts be known Tuesday and, at presstime, were planning to protest the protests.

oanne Rombouts has been a fixture at the Eagle Creek Bar and Grill at Burnaby Mountain Golf Course for 14 years, and she’s not going to let a little thing like the birth of her first child get in the way of her job. Rombouts is due on June 22, and she’ll take some time off, but not much. “I’ll work as much from home as I can, but I think I’ll come in one day a week to make sure everything’s going well.” Eagle Creek has a fine reputation in the city for hosting weddings, banquets and golf tournaments, but it also is a great place to unwind after a round of golf. “We can literally host hundreds of people here,”

said Rombouts. “We can host a banquet for 200, 60 to 70 people in the pub and another 70 to 80 on the patio,” said Rombouts. “In the summer, it can get really busy around here.” That means chef Tony Snelgrove is on the spot many summer days and nights, a challenge he pulls off with class and precision. “He’s very old school,”

As if on cue, Snelgrove brings out the wasabi salmon salad ($13), which features a huge plank of salmon served with salad and a creamy, spicy wasabi dressing. The salmon is divine, and I somehow get the greens eaten as well, when the Cobb salad ($13) also arrives. I will say the egg, bacon, blue cheese, chicken and avocado are sensational together and well worth the money. Making it even better is you can add other meats to your salad, everything from $3 for a prawn skewer to $7 for six ounces of Ahi tuna. My third and final dish was something you won’t see many other places: the mini kielbasa sliders ($16) are served with four generous portions and include kettle chips. Snelgrove has offset the traditional saltiness of the kielbasa with pea shoots, and the taste is surprisingly crisp. The sliders can also be ordered as beef burgers, dark meat chicken burgers or mini meatball sliders. The BBOT Board of Directors and staff officially welcomed Paul Holden to their team as the new President and CEO. Dick Kouwenhoven, Chair of the BBOT Board of Directors, said that Mr. Holden demonstrated business intelligence and personal integrity, which – combined with his experience and track record – makes him the perfect choice to fill this role. Holden, who started May 9th, has over 30 years of experience in Business and Management and will be a great asset for the BBOT. His career accomplishments include Paul Holden, new CEO working as Group Publisher/ of the BBOT Director of Custom Publishing with the Business in Vancouver Media Group, in which he was responsible for many VANOC Olympic publications, including the Official Hockey Guide. Looking forward to this new chapter of his life, Holden said he is excited to be a part of an organization that makes a difference in the community, doing “innovative work across all lines of social, environmental and economic development.” In addition, Holden has expressed his enthusiasm for continuing the BBOT partnership with the City of Burnaby and “helping to contribute in building upon its tremendous successes.”

Attendees at the forum were seated at roundtables organized by sector to facilitate an open and honest discussion of the challenges facing both internationally trained professionals looking for work and businesses looking for skilled employees. The forum was the culmination of the ground-breaking Breaking Down the Barriers project, an 18-month undertaking of the Burnaby Intercultural Planning Table and the BBOT. Through a series of workplace tours and events, the BBOT engaged Burnaby’s business community

The forum featured a keynote presentation by former BC Hydro CEO, Chair of the Immigrant Employment Council of BC and member of the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council on Skill and Talent Mobility, Bob Elton, who urged businesses of all sizes to be proactive in their hiring and support of immigrant employees. “It doesn’t matter if you have one thousand employees, one hundred, or ten, you can get involved,” said Elton. Elton made the

business case for increased immigrant integration in the workforce, warning of the coming shortage of skilled labour across many of the world’s developed economies. “Canada’s diversity and openness is going to be a competitive advantage in the future,” Elton concluded. Roger Silva, one of the project participants who successfully found a job following the Breaking Down the Barriers Tour, delivered a poignant speech to his fellow immigrants, urging them to remain positive despite the barriers they have encountered. “Searching for a job is an emotional journey,” Silva said, “but don’t lose your self-confidence or determination.” Silva later went on to thank the business community for its support and for helping new Canadians better understand the concerns of employers. The Breaking Down the Barriers project was a joint project of the Burnaby Board of Trade and the Burnaby Intercultural Planning Table, and was made possible through funding from the Government of Canada and the Province of British Columbia.

The Costs of Producing Video

There are many reasons for exploring video production for your business needs. Building awareness of your company and products, or instructional and safety videos are just two examples. The hot thing nowadays is to add video to your company website to give it more dynamic content and make you stand out from your competition. For example, check out www.starproduce.com. An important thing to consider before making a video is to ask the following question: Why am I making this video and who am I making it for? Once you answer this question, you can determine what kind of video you need to make, how much it will cost to produce, and whether it’s worth it for your business to make one. Video production isn’t cheap. When you go to a professional video production company, they’ll likely give you an estimate in the thousands of dollars.

The video you create is acting as a spokesperson for your company This is because video production is not a one-person job and it does not happen in one day. The company has to pay

multiple staff and/or contractors over an extended time period in order to produce a professional final product. A Prod. Co. will collaborate with you to produce the results you need and can usually match any samples you provide them. Consumer grade video equipment gets better and cheaper each year, so you could consider doing it yourself. However, it’s a big job that would require you to learn a whole new skill set and your time is likely already filled up running your day-to-day operations. Otherwise, you’ll end up paying twice as much in the end. The good news is that with the internet and sites like YouTube, you don’t have to spend thousands of dollars on television airtime to get your video or commercial seen. If you host or embed the video on your site, all you have to do is direct people to it and then finish the sale yourself if they like what they see. Depending on the scale of your business, a couple of well-placed print or internet ads can direct the people you want to see the video to your site. In closing, the important thing to remember is that the video you create is acting as a spokesperson for your

On Thursday, April 28th, 2011 Terry Farmer, founder of Accent Inns received the inaugural Life Member Award from Tourism Victoria. Farmer, who has won numerous awards TERRY FARMER, FOUNDER and accolades OF ACCENT INNS and held posts in several tourism, sport and business organizations, is described by those who know him as a visionary who cares deeply about people, his community, the environment, and tourism in the province of British Columbia. “A successful entrepreneur, tireless volunteer and beloved employer, Terry Farmer, founder of the Accent Inns Hotel Chain, has made British Columbia a better place to live, work and play,” said one long time Accent Inns employee. Those words were echoed by Dave Cowan, GM of Butchart Gardens as he named Farmer as the first ever recipient of the award, which was accepted on behalf of Farmer by his daughter Mandy Farmer, who is now President and CEO of the Accent Inns hotel chain.

ABC Recycling partnered with the Kidney Foundation of Canada to create an innovative program, Kidney Metals – Recycle for Life. Dubbed as the “recycling program that will solve your problem and support a good cause,” this program provides homeowners and businesses the opportunity to donate their scrap metal – anything from old sinks, washers and car parts to old construction materials and machinery – in order to make a difference and help save lives. Business participants will benefit from their generosity by receiving an

official charitable tax receipt based on the weight and value of their donation. As part of the Kidney Foundation’s recent launch for a new national screening program (SeeKD), ABC Recycling actively participated in the Kidney Metals – Recycle for Life program by partnering with CN Rail to shear an old railcar, which produced 30 tons of metal. “We are happy to be able to contribute our recycling expertise to help The Kidney Foundation save lives,” commented David Yochlowitz, ABC’s CEO. Modern dance in the spotlight Nine works performed by nine dancers are on the bill for an evening of modern dance at Shadbolt Centre for the Arts. The Shadbolt’s Continuum Dance Company is presenting the show on Friday, May 13 and Saturday, May 14 at 8 p.m. in the Studio Theatre. Continuum is the centre’s community modern dance company for adults, which gives advanced dancers a chance to return or continue to dance. Its goal is to expose dancers and audiences to the art of modern dance. The upcoming show will feature performances by company dancers Christina

s children, our role models are often famous performers, action heroes and worldclass athletes. We look up to great achievers – awardwinning authors and successful business leaders. Yet we all know – from what we learn of the personal lives of the rich and famous – that that level of achievement often comes with a price. Their lives are often out of balance. Another type of hero is the protagonist in Shakespearean drama, novels, movies and classical myths. These heroes are called to a great personal challenge, and their success is judged by how they answer that call. Great fiction – in print or on the screen – is, by definition, not factual but speaks the truth about human nature and life. We are most moved when they seem to speak to us personally, echoing the drama in our own lives and our own

individual struggles. As a physician, I accompany my patients along their personal journeys and have the privilege of guiding them through the stages and milestones of their lives – preparing for a baby, coping as new parents, living through grief, resolving marital discord, managing anxiety, finding a way through depression, adapting to chronic health conditions and facing the end of life. When I speak to young people trying to decide on the direction of their lives and others at the crossroads of midlife, I talk about their calling. I take out my prescription pad but instead of prescribing a medication, I draw three intersecting circles, borrowing a concept from Jim Collins business classic From Good to Great. The first circle represents your talents – what you do

better than everyone else. The second represents your passions – what you love to do, what you’d be willing to do for free, and what you can do for hours at a time without tiring. The third represents the needs of the world around you. The intersection of these circles – your talents, your passion and the needs of the world – is your calling – your vocation. This is what you were meant to do. This model seems so clear and simple, yet we know life is not so simple. At many points in our lives, the circles we draw do not intersect. We have not yet discovered our talents or invested the necessary time and effort to develop them. Our passions, preoccupations and obsessions lie outside the other two circles. Looking outside and working for something bigger than ourselves can move us towards our true calling. Real life is unpredictable. We have dreams and we can make plans, but one thing we can predict is the inevitable intervention of the unforeseen. For my patients, often I am the bearer of bad news. There is a spot on the scan

that we should investigate. You’ve just been diagnosed with a chronic condition. Accidents can happen. Your calling will change as new needs arise in your life, and you can find deeper meaning in new ways. What life reveals at these times is often a greater calling – the calling of care. Caregivers are family members and friends who rise to the challenge of this very personal call. It took until the seventh round for a Burnaby Winter Club product to be taken in Thursday’s WHL bantam draft, but Lucas Mercer was worth the wait for the Vancouver Giants. The 6-3, 170-pound defenceman was taken 133rd overall by the local WHL squad with a pick it got from Calgary in the Misha Fisenko trade several years ago. Mercer’s size was something the Giants didn’t want to pass up. “He’s a project,” said Giants media relations spokesperson Dan Elliott. “He was consistently improving this year and he’s got a good stick, with lots of reach.” Elliott said the Port Moody native has to work on his skating, but there’s a lot of upside for the big defender. Mercer’s winter club coach was John Batchelor, who also works as a scout for the Medicine Hat Tigers. “He’s a good project,” said Batchelor. “He’s going to be 6-5 or more, and he’s already come a long way.” Batchelor said Mercer’s skating will improve as he grows into his body. “With kids growing that fast, they’re always catching up with how their muscles and bones are growing,” said Batchelor. “He’ll grow into his body. His skating already got a lot better as the year went on.” Batchelor said the Tigers were looking at Mercer at about the time the Giants took him, and one thing Mercer had going for him is he really wanted to play in the WHL. “I tell the kids that when they’re talking to teams, they have to be honest what their plans are,” said Batchelor. “Do they want to go the U.S. college route or do they want to play major junior? Lucas told them straight up he wanted to play in the WHL.” Mercer’s teammate on the blueline, Victor Dombrovskiy, fell to the eighth round, 156th overall to Swift Current. Dombrovskiy is still deciding what his future will be. “Vic’s going to be a good player wherever he goes,” said Batchelor of the 5-10 167-pound puck-moving defenceman. The third winter club product taken was Brandon Delgrosso, 191st overall to the

Moose Jaw Warriors. “Brandon’s a big, aggressive winger who works hard in the corners,” said Batchelor. “What he needs to work on is he’s got a great shot and he has to get it off a little quicker. He can become a big power forward, but he has to get his shot off quicker.” Batchelor said he was hesitant to recommend some of his players to the Tigers because he has been burned in the past by players who eventually end up going the U.S. college route.

“I can’t put my word on the line if kids are non-commital,” said Batchelor. “I know lots of teams liked our players. We won a championship with them, so they’re good players.” The first overall pick in the WHL bantam draft, to the cellar-dwelling Calgary Hitmen, was Abbotsford winger Jake Virtanen, who had 70 goals in 68 games. The Giants’ first pick was playmaking Alberta centre Thomas Foster, who Elliott said can develop into a first-line centre.

The Burnaby Lake Rugby Club went two-for-two in West Vancouver on a rainy Saturday when the First Division men lifted the Ceili’s Cup and the women’s Premiership side completed an undefeated season and took home the Harris Memorial Cup. The women had a thrilling 1713 win over the Velox Valkyries that was punctuated by Melissa Miyazaki scoring an intercept try in the dying seconds for the winning margin over the thirdranked Valkyries. Burnaby Lake finished 10-0

for the season and got out to a strong start in a torrential rainstorm at Klahanie Park. Burnaby led 10-3 at the half, on tries by Maria Gallo and Lindsay Bernrot. Jane Cruttenden kicked a penalty for Velox’s only first half points. In the second half, Cruttenden notched a try, a conversion and a penalty to give Velox a 13-10 lead into the dying minutes of the match. Burnaby, with visions of its undefeated season going up in smoke, was attacking in full force and their efforts eventually were rewarded when Miyazaki scored the game-winning try. The conversion was kicked by

Becky Querido for the final 17-13 score line. The provincial title was Burnaby’s first since last lifting the Harris Memorial Cup in 2009. The Burnaby first division men then followed up in the Ceili’s Cup Final with a 10-8 win over James Bay AA of Victoria. Like their female counterparts, the Burnaby men had to come from behind to win their championship. James Bay had an 8-3 lead heading into the final minutes with a try from Jim De Goede and a penalty from Kyle Laberge. Burnaby had been trailing, with their only three points

Nolan Shelley then stepped up to the plate and converted to give Burnaby a 10-8 victory and deny James Bay their third straight provincial First Division championship. In the Canadian Direct Insurance Premier League final, Oak Bay’s Castaway Wanderers downed Meraloma Rugby Club 20-3 to lift their first Rounsefell Cup since 2002. In two other championships played at Brockton Oval at

Stanley Park, New Westminster and Coquitlam based United RFC won the men’s league 1 final 12-8 over Port Alberni, while also beating Surrey 20-15 in the men’s league 2 final. In the league 1 final, United nursed a 7-3 halftime lead before notching a crucial second half try for the 12-8 win over the Port Alberni Black Sheep. John Wilson isn’t quite planning the parade route yet, but he’s encouraged by his Burnaby Jr. Lakers’ first two games. “We’ve gotten 28 goals in our first two games,” said Wilson after the Lakers beat the Langley Thunder 16-10 at Bill Copeland Arena on Sunday night. “Like Ernie ‘Punch’ McLean used to say, ‘We don’t lose in our barn.’” The minor lacrosse team, missing snipers Mackenzie Davis and Colton Dow because of work and school commitments, got five-goal efforts from both Ryan Watson and Tyler Buchan. Jaeden Gastaldo chipped in with a hat trick, while captain Jaxson Lee had two goals and an assist. Alex Millin had the other Laker marker. “(Assistant coach) Stu Watson and I were watching warm-up, and Ryan was really zipping it,” said Wilson. “Stu looks over and said ‘I wouldn’t be surprised if he got three tonight.’ And then the kid goes and gets five for us.” Watson may be a bit biased when it comes to his son Ryan, but he was very happy with the overall offence. “Pleasantly surprised,” said Watson. “We’re getting a lot of contributions from

guys and we’re only going to get better when everyone starts returning.” Dow should be back this week, while Blake Mattinson is also expected back shortly. Big rightie Jackson Decker is also slated to be in the lineup soon. Wilson was also happy with the play of Buchan, an intermediate call-up. “Tyler Buchan’s going to be a very special player,’ said Wilson. “That’s his first junior game ever, and he goes out and scores five. The sky’s the limit for Tyler.” Defensively, Wilson was happy with the play of David Beaumont, a Royal City product that both Stu Watson and assistant Ken Bowman have coached in the past. “Solid defensively, that’s what Beaumont brings to the table for us,” said Wilson. The 2-0 Lakers get a much sterner test this Wednesday when they visit the league-leading 3-0 Coquitlam Adanacs at 8 p.m. “They’re the gold standard,” said Wilson, who won a Mann Cup with the senior Adanacs in 2001. “That’s where the bar’s set and it will be a good test for us.
