Legion pleads for help as it faces closing Janaya Fuller-Evans

The Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 148 in Burnaby Heights may be holding its last Remembrance Day event this coming November. President Dave Taylor spoke at council Monday night, asking the city to give the Legion full property tax exemption.

Currently, the Legion receives permissive tax exemption for its community space, but not its canteen. “Our Legions as a whole are having trouble maintaining their positions in the community,” Taylor said. “We stand out and require your support.” He pointed out that he had come to council five years before, at the start of his tenure as president, and asked for help

then. “I foresaw what was going to happen,” he said. Since then, the Legion has lost $70,000 in revenue and paid the city $240,000 in taxes and utilities, according to Taylor. If the Legion had received a full tax exemption at the time, he added, it would be in good condition today. A delegation from the Legion appeared

before council in October 2006 asking for a tax exemption. The Legion faced further challenges when the provincial smoking ban in all public places was announced in 2007. The Legion had previously constructed the Smokey Smith smoking room in 2002, at a cost of $50,000, to accommodate the smoking rules at the time. At Monday night’s meeting, Taylor was Legion Page 4
