At Amica, our residents get to keep their most prized possession: their independence. We understand that moving from a longtime family home can be a heart-wrenching experience, at any age. Yet when our new residents settle in and see how much they have gained in the way of comfort, friendship, services and amenities of a luxurious resort, they begin to realize that the most important aspect of their move is that they kept their dignity, self-respect and freedom of choice. All things considered, it’s what you can't put a price on that we value most. Kevin Hill/NOW

Village Hall in Anmore will have a mayor yet again after this Saturday’s byelection.

Anmore to elect new mayor jmcfee@thenownews.com The day has finally come. It’s been nearly five months since Anmore’s mayor stepped down, and the village will finally have a leader again after voters cast their ballots this weekend. Anmore’s long-awaited mayoral byelection is set for tomorrow (Saturday) with three candidates in the running. Heather Anderson, Arthur Crossman and Robert Tribe will all compete for council’s top spot, which the winner will occupy until the current term ends in

November 2011. More than 220 voters already made their selection last week during the advance voting day. About 1,100 more residents are registered to vote tomorrow. The mayoral seat has been empty since Dec. 31, when long-standing leader Hal Weinberg stepped down from the position he held for nearly three decades. At 76 years old, Weinberg said he was ready to retire from village politics, although he still planned to continue his work at Simon Fraser University. Referenda possible draw for turnout at early polls  CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1.

city should ban smoking on public patios and in areas where those under the age of 16 may be present. Currently, dogs are allowed off leash on certain trails in Mundy Park between dawn and 10 a.m. Voters have three choices: increase or decrease the permitted times, or leave them as is. Those two questions were added to the voting process, although kept separate from the ballots, in a move initiated by Coun. Doug Macdonell last month that was intended to bolster turnout. Byelection numbers from 2007 indicate that 3,824 people, or 5.1 per cent of eligible voters, cast ballots at that time. “I hear from a bunch of people that are engaged, but I also hear from a lot of people that still don’t realize there’s a byelection on the weekend,” Stewart said. “It’s frustrating for our staff, because they’re almost asking themselves, ‘What more can we do?’ We’ve been pretty open with this, so it’s discouraging that some people don’t know that it’s going on.” The feedback from the two questions will be used by council and staff to formulate policies on the two issues, though it remains unclear

whether council will debate either issue before the monthlong break in August. Given that the smoking debate was put before council earlier this year but later deferred, Stewart was more optimistic that that issue will be before council before the concerns around Mundy Park. “The smoking issue was already kind of in the works, so I suspect that will come back to us and it may well be that we are given sufficient feedback that we’ll be able to inform a council decision pretty quickly,” he said. “I think we could end up with action on that one relatively quickly.” Stewart said he’d like to see how readily used and effective a soon-to-be completed offleash area will be before introducing policy measures. “There almost is a suggestion out there by some that the construction of the fenced, dog off-leash area was actually intended to allow council to eliminate dogs off leash in the park — that isn’t the case,” he said. “I really believe that 10 years from now there will be dogs off leash in Mundy Park. We may find better hours or better routes, but I don’t know we’ll be making any quick decisions on this partly because we’re about to open a new facility.”

Cultural advisory group to bring arts to the community John Kurucz jkurucz@thenownews.com A 12-person group with affiliations across the arts and culture spectrum has been tasked with heading up the city’s newest advisory group. Council unanimously endorsed the formation of a cultural advisory group at its May 3 meeting, and the group will consist of one rep each from ArtsConnect, the Festival Planner Network and board members from the Coquitlam Library, Evergreen Cultural Centre Society, Place Des Arts Society and Coquitlam Heritage Society. Three additional at-large members with a background in the arts will also be added to the group, as will the three council members from the city’s recreation, sports and culture committee. The three council members, however, will be non-voting members of the advisory group and will serve more so in a facilitator’s role. “We have a diverse and active and vibrant arts and culture community in Coquitlam — we’re lucky for that. This council has an opportunity to get the arts and culture community together to advance their programs and it will help strengthen these communities. The real winner in this will be the City of Coquitlam,”

committee chair Coun. Doug Macdonell said at the meeting. The committee’s mandate is broken down into four areas: to provide advice to council on specific cultural issues, provide advice to the arts and culture communities on how to work with the city, to support and connect organizations with opportunities to host events in the city and to advocate and promote cultural activities in the city. “We are very much about making arts accessible to the broader community so people can participate and have opportunities to enjoy arts offerings in the community, so this committee will help us to do that,” said Helen Daniels, the executive director of ArtsConnect. Staff will request $20,000 in funding for the group as part of the 2011 budget process to cover staff costs for the committee, and meetings will be held four times per year. “It’s a great idea because right now, we’re looking at some issues where we don’t have good representation, so to get this kind of group together is fantastic,” said Jack Trumley, vice-chair of the Coquitlam Library board. “One of the issues for us is looking at facilities. We need to expand and get a new library. From the board’s perspective, we’re continuing to talk about that. It’s been an ongoing issue for us and that’s one of the biggest issues that we want to pursue.”

Councillors stuck in stalemate  CONTINUED FROM PAGE 4.

remaining four councillors were stuck in a stalemate for months, unable to agree on whom to appoint as a chief election officer. In January, a tie vote defeated the appointment of a senior village staff member. A few weeks later, a second tie vote vetoed the appoint-

ment of a retired West Vancouver city clerk, who had been Belcarra’s chief elections officer in the 2008 municipal election. Finally, the province stepped in to resolve the conflict. Bill Bennett, minister of community and rural development, selected Sarah Morden to run the election. Morden operates a local

government consulting firm, and Anmore will be responsible for the cost of her services — pegged at around $6,000. Polls will be open on May 15 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Anmore Village Hall, 2697 Sunnyside Rd. Voters must bring two pieces of ID to verify identity and place of residence.

building, Derpak said. This extra space could be used for community services like childcare programs, office space, health clinics, sports programs or resources for families and seniors. “We’re right in the throes of doing that at James Park Elementary and Pitt River Middle,” Derpak said. “We’ve already got approval on those projects and we’ve got some really interesting things happening.” The new James Park Elementary will include offices for Fraser Health public nurses, accessible through a separate entrance. The school will also engage in partnerships with the Ministry of Children and Family Development,

Westcoast Family and the City of Port Coquitlam. Meanwhile, Pitt River Middle will include a healthy learning centre and an aboriginal welcoming centre, Derpak said. “I think it will be interesting to see what people have to say. We’re looking at the siting of the school, which is really the heart of the issue,” he said. “The neighbourhood learning centre public consultation is set for June, but we’re going to introduce the concept as part of the discussion next week.” The planning session for the future Centennial Secondary will be held on Wednesday, May 19 at 7 p.m. in the Winslow Centre gym at 1100 Winslow Ave., Coquitlam.

Opinion

Funds for Spirit Square are better used elsewhere Re: “Spirit Square opens to the public in June,” Friday, May 7. Everyone get ready for the party and grand opening of Mayor Richard Stewart and council’s new project on completion, Spirit Square. Their project cost taxpayers $2.6 million for this postage-size park — or, rather, this cold commercial piece of land void of trees and shelter, and small amount of grass and plenty of concrete. To The Seems even some council members are in the dark over actual costs. We are also in the dark, as no information has been provided to confirm the actual cost and if the government grant of $500,000 has been received. Just why does this council and mayor feel they should spend $40,000 more of our tax dollars on a party of four months? Taxpayers have not provided them with a mandate to recklessly spend our tax

dollars on this sort of thing. However, they have indicated it will come from surplus funds set aside for Olympic expenditures. Since the money has become surplus, then it should be set aside and used more frugally for projects where we can all appreciate some benefit. When are the mayor and council going to start being more responsible with our money? Look at the major utilEditor ity increase this year, and watch for a huge property tax bill coming out soon. We pay more money and yet we see them recklessly spending $40,000 on a four-month party. What other costs can we expect to see attached to Spirit Square? Transparent government indeed. Coquitlam, Anmore: get out and vote

I

t will be interesting to see the outcome from this weekend. There are two byelections slated for Saturday — one in the TriCities’ largest municipality of Coquitlam and the other in one of our small villages, Anmore. While most will check in after the polls close to see who the winner is, we are kind of curious to see what the voter turnout will be. Byelections typically don’t draw masses of voters out. Coquitlam’s byelections in 2004 and 2007 both saw just a shade over five per cent of eligible voters cast a ballot. So Coquitlam has chosen to take the sour taste of byelection lemons and whip up some lemonade. Voters have a chance to weigh in on two heavily debated topics in the city regarding smoking bans on patios and off-leash dog hours in Mundy Park. The non-binding referenda questions make up a public input opportunity for residents to be heard on some hot-button issues. We hope this draws more people out to the polls. This is your chance to tell the city if you want to see more or less off-leash dog hours in Mundy Park, and whether you would like smoking bans to include public patios and other public spaces where children 16 and under are present. It will be interesting to see if the vote for a new councillor and public input opportunity will be a large enough carrot to entice voters back to the polls. Anmore residents, meanwhile, have definitely proven themselves to be more civically engaged. The village’s voter turnout was 55 per cent in 2008, down from 70 per cent in 2005 and the high-80s in 2002. Village council has been operating for the last five months without a mayor, and it’s become apparent they desperately need a tie-breaking vote. These conditions could lead to the highest voter turnout during an Anmore election in the village’s history. We hope residents in both municipalities show up at polling stations and have their say. There are important decisions to be made in both communities, and it all starts with you, the voter.

Giving thanks to nurses This week marks National Nursing Week in Canada and, on behalf of Crossroads Hospice Society, we would like to recognize the exceptional work of the Fraser Health nurses who care for our terminally ill patients at Crossroads Inlet Centre Hospice in Port Moody. Working to provide the clinical side of hospice care in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team, nurses accept the ideal that treating the dying with dignity is our primary concern and maximizing patients’ To The quality of life our single goal. With the emphasis on providing compassionate care that promotes maximum comfort, these nurses work tirelessly on behalf of our patients. It is clear to us that our nurses have truly embraced the philosophy of hospice care and have come to affirm life and embrace mourning as a natural part of that process. This difficult task is performed with skill, dedication and professionalism. This week we celebrate our hospice nurses and recognize their contribution in helping us fulfill our mission of offering dignity, choice and compassion to those affected by end-of-life experience. (lead in part by Iraq war veterans) is calling for the U.S. to end its dependence on foreign oil imports, and they’re pushing the American Congress to pass new clean energy legislation. Considering the heavy reliance the U.S. economy has on fossil fuels like oil and coal, it really is quite a predicament: no more foreign oil, no new domestic oil and no more burning coal either. So basically, our American neighbours are sitting between a rock and a hard place. But America’s energy bind is B.C.’s opportunity. They need us and our wealth of renewable energy resources more Editor now than they ever have before. We’re the silver lining to America’s fossil fuel cloud. Not only do B.C.’s renewable water and wind resources give us a considerable ability to generate clean electricity, we also have a considerable capacity for producing cleanburning biofuels from the renewable cellulose materials produced in abundance by our forests. Renewable biofuels are exactly what our American neighbours are going to be looking for as they seek an environmentally sound replacement for their precarious, non-renewable oil supplies. Biofuels add a promising new dimension to B.C.’s growing clean energy sector and they’re the perfect complement to our many other renewable green energy resources. In a very real way, America’s fossil fuel predicament and their clean energy needs are an economic silver lining for B.C. And, for a change, we’re the ones sitting in the driver’s seat. Oil spill an opportunity The massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico puts our American neighbours in a serious bind. role under the Clean Energy Act. These are the same geniuses who thought it was a good idea to fire up Burrard Thermal, that wheezy gas-fired monstrosity from the early 1960s. I’m surprised they didn’t tell us to stick a nuclear reactor on the site, too. The people who should be deciding our province’s energy goals are the people we’ve elected to do that job, not some faceless empire-building bureaucrats who aren’t accountable to the public. There are enough layers of government red tape as it is. The proper role of the utilities commission is to regulate public monopolies like B.C. Hydro and ICBC and ensure they’re operating safely and reliably, and not gouging the public based on their monopoly status. It’s not the commission’s place to be second-guessing the government’s clean energy objectives and trying to weasel around them. Mike Taylor Coquitlam

This week’s question:

Should waste incineration be part of Metro Vancouver’s solid waste plan? • No, the emissions are terrible. • No, we need to recycle more. • More research is needed. • Yes, it could generate energy. • Yes, just get rid of it all. Vote at www.thenownews.com

Hydro upgrades needed

Last week’s question:

I was not happy when I read how much our B.C. Hydro bills are going up. Then I read that B.C. Hydro is spending $15 billion over the next 10 years to repair and improve B.C.’s old dams and generally keep B.C.’s public electricity system functioning. OK, I totally get it now why our hydro bills are going up: we’ve been riding on the coattails of our parents and grandparents who built an incredible public utility that we’ve let fall into disrepair. It’s time for us to pay up and invest in the public utility they built — $15 billion is a small price to pay to keep one of the best public utilities in the world public. We all value the public benefits B.C. Hydro provides to us and it’s worth the increased hydro rates needed to keep it strong and publicly owned. Eugenia Nikolaidis Vancouver

The Scene

Actors project takes to stage Budding actors and actresses will get their moment in the spotlight in two weeks’ time. The Young Actors Project will be having its year-end show on May 29 at Port Moody’s Inlet Theatre. The show will feature two original one-act plays, followed by two original movies starring the kids and teens of this year’s acting workshops. The shows are written and directed by Leo Award-winning director Robert Randall. The movies were shot on location at Scott Creek Middle School, where the administration allowed Randall to use the school as a setting for filming a middle school drama. One of the movies features an original rap song/ video performed by members of the class that was professionally recorded and is now available on iTunes. “It’s been a breakthrough year for the Young Actors Project,” Randall said in a release. “In addition to these private classes, the Young Actors Project has also been bringing acting workshops into elementary schools throughout the Lower Mainland.” As of June, the project will have visited 190 classrooms in 47 schools, introducing approximately 4,500 students to the art of acting in just one year. A junior improv league featuring teams from throughout the Lower Mainland is also scheduled to be launched this fall. The league will offer a theatre sports competition to be held next spring in Port Moody. For more information, visit www.youngactorsproject.ca.

Knots fit to be tied over contest win Youthink champs earn face time with recording industry insiders John Kurucz jkurucz@thenownews.com The Knots have reached the proverbial teenaged music mountaintop. The Coquitlam-based band won the province-wide Youthink Magazine Best Teen Band contest on May 1, besting more than 50 other bands from across B.C. The four-piece, guitar-driven rock band won it all during a three-band, winner-take-all showdown at Tom Lee Music’s downtown Vancouver location after being pitted against two other finalists. “It was amazing. I was more shocked than anything,” said guitarist/vocalist Jeff Huggins. “We didn’t focus on winning or anything, we were more focused on playing a good show. We seemed really tight that day, and we had a lot of fun on

stage.” The Knots’ journey to the top began in earnest in December, when the group was one of 10 bands pared down from 50 by contest judges. From there, the band advanced to the final three in an online voting process in March before taking the first-place billing. “We were all shocked. We had only heard a bit of the other bands, and we all thought that they sounded really good, so it was great to hear that we won,” said guitar player Jonny Schmidt. “It’s a huge boost to the ego to know that we won over these bands that we all thought were so good.” Having come out on top, the band is now reaping the rewards of a sizable prize pack: $500 in gift certificates from Tom Lee Music, a five-piece Yamaha drum kit and a free rental of the Tom Lee Music Hall for a concert. Gear perks aside, the Knots will also be exposed to

invaluable industry insiders, including a recording alongside noted producer Jay Evjen at the renowned Factory Studios and a one-day songwriting session with Shaun Verreault of Wide Mouth Mason. “We get so much out of this beside the prizes,” Schmidt said. “The boost of confidence will only encourage us to put more effort and dedication into our band. It means that we’re doing at least something right.” Having built up considerable momentum for the band, now the task is to continue building on that progress — write more songs, record an album and seek out radio play. “We’re really excited. We’ve received so much from the Youthink contest, but there’s still so much out there for us to get,” Huggins said. The Knots’ next live performance is slated for Sunday, May 23 in New Westminster as part of the Hyack Festival.

It is taught by independent teachers throughout Canada, the United States, New Zealand, Singapore, Vietnam and South Korea. Cindy Sletmoen will be on hand to answer questions about the program during an MYC open house on Sunday, May 16 from 1:30 to 4 p.m. at

TRI-CITIES AUTOMOTIVE

GUIDE

Ford Taurus doubles as high-performance vehicle David Chao and Bob McHugh editorial@thenownews.com The “sleeper” sports sedan is a special breed of automobile. The undercover agent of the auto world, it looks, works and lives what appears to be an ordinary life — until called into action. The new Ford Taurus is an award-winning full-sized family sedan. The Ford Taurus SHO, the focus of this review, looks the same and can do all the things a conventional Taurus can do, yet it’s a high-performance double agent. Possibly the most innovative sedan Ford has ever brought to the market, Taurus offers an impressive selection of new high-tech features, some of which are not even available on much pricier vehicles. An outstanding passengerprotection system is also combined with style, performance and a high degree of comfort. The original Taurus SHO (super high output) was introduced back in 1989 and power came from a high-revving (220-horsepower, twin-overhead camshaft) Yamaha built V-6 engine. It only came with a manual transmission, was a hoot to drive and it’s still treasured by Ford purists. A second generation followed in ’92 with an optional automatic transmission and a specially de-tuned version of the V-6. The downward trend continued when a forgettable V-8 powered third and last generation SHO was introduced about 10 years ago. The least said about this car the better. The new Taurus SHO is a comeback car for Ford that captures the spirit of the ’89

Photo submitted

The retooled Taurus takes Ford’s sports sedan back to the days of high performance. car. Power is provided by a new Ford-built Eco-Boost V-6 engine that also answers the fuel-efficiency and environmental concerns of today’s car buyer. The 3.5-litre, direct-injection, twin-turbocharged V-6 is the largest and most powerful of Ford’s Eco-Boost engines. It can generate 365 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 350 ft-lb of torque is available from 1,500 to 5,250 rpm.

This Eco-Boost engine also provides excellent fuel economy when compared to similar power and normally aspirated engines. City fuel economy is rated at 12.3 L/100 km, and on the highway it can get eight L/100 km. The base 3.5-litre Duratec V-6 offers a maximum of 263 horsepower and 249 lb-ft of torque, which is more than adequate for this size of vehicle. In the entry level front-drive

Taurus, fuel economy is a little better at 11.6 L/100 km in the city and 7.2 L/100 km on the highway. Add all-wheel-drive and fuel consumption is the same. The SHO comes with a six-speed select shift automatic transmission, all-wheel-drive and just about every option, except for navigation and active cruise control packages. It also has a special sport-tuned suspension with unique shock absorbers, springs, stabilizer bars, strut mount bushings and a 20-inch wheel and tire package. A quicker and more direct electric (instead of hydraulic) power assisted steering system plus an upgraded four-wheel disc brake system are both standard. There’s a sport mode setting for the standard AdvanceTrac electronic stability control and a shorter 3.16:1 final drive ratio helps provide even crisper acceleration. The lengthy list of standard SHO equipment includes the sync voice-activated communications system (which now includes turn-by-turn route guidance), intelligent access with door frame keypad and push-button start, dual-electronic climate control, MyKey parental security, automatic high beams and rain sensing windshield wipers, auto-dimming interior and driver’s side mirrors, a Sony audio system, Blis blind spot information system with cross traffic alert and a rear-view camera. Taurus comes in SE, SEL and Limited editions in addition to SHO. The base price is $28,949 and SHO starts at $48,199. My test SHO came with the Navi and Active Cruise packages and a $53,749 price tag.  CONTINUED ON PAGE 23, see LEG ROOM.

The Looks

Somewhat conservative yet an elegant and attractive design, the new Taurus should be a good fit with its target market, the mature buyer and business person. Apart from some discreet badges, the big wheels and rear spoiler are the most visible signs that it’s the SHO.

The Inside

Distinguishing features inside include leather-trimmed seats with Miko (made from recycled materials) suede inserts, a perforated leather-wrapped steering wheel, 10-way power seats, aluminum gas and brake pedals (adjustable), real aluminum trim and there’s branding on the floor mats and dash panel. The leather seats look good, accommodate a full-size frame and they have both heating and cooling features. The rear seats also come with heaters, leg room in both the front and back is good and the trunk is huge. It’s a car for a long drive.

The Drive

Other than the steering wheel mounted shifter paddles, no big surprises inside the comfortable cabin. Adjustable gas and brake pedals help make it easier and safer (distance from air bag) for shorter-legged drivers to find a comfortable position. Modern automatics like the six-speed SelectShift in the SHO are on par with a manual transmission in terms of efficient fuel economy and driver enjoyment. Either steering wheel paddle allowed both up and down shifts without taking a hand off the wheel — a clever design. Paddle use, however, does not override auto and first requires a floor lever shift to a manual position. Power and acceleration is smooth, easy and very impressive. The low-speed engine power, particularly on a steep hill, makes it feel like there’s a much larger engine under the hood. The turbo boost action is hardly noticeable. For a big and fairly heavy vehicle, the SHO’s handling is exceptional. It tracks beautifully and is very stable on the highway. The suspension is firmer than the base Taurus, yet it doesn’t detract from ride comfort at highway speeds.

The Score

A covert sports sedan, the full-sized Ford Taurus SHO is a big high-performer.

Safety

The 2010 Taurus has an advanced crash safety structure that recently earned it a U.S. government five-star rating in front and side crash tests. It has also earned the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s “top safety pick” ranking. Advanced collision avoidance technologies include a radarenabled advanced collision warning system and an optional active cruse control system. A unique cross traffic alert system warns a driver of rear criss-cross traffic, when backing out of a parking stall or a restricted vision driveway. Included with the adaptive cruise control option package is a new radar-based forward collision warning system that helps a driver avoid accidents. It detects moving vehicles ahead and provides a visual heads-up warning signal and audible warning. Taurus also features faster acting side air bags that use pressure pulse sensors inside the front doors and deploy up to 30 per cent faster than traditional air bags.

Home of the Coquitlam Reds and Redlegs

by Bill Green

MUNDY PARK REVIVAL

“Welcome to Mundy Park—Home of the Coquitlam Reds and Redlegs” the banner says. Since 1986, the Reds have called Mundy Park their home (as have the Redlegs since their beginning in 1994). The “welcome” part, however, has not always been acknowledged as an altogether enjoyable experience by both visiting and home teams or their spectators alike. Since the mid to late 1980’s, Mundy Park (or Mundy Park 4 as it is referenced by the City of Coquitlam Parks and Recreation Department) has been the home of several other baseball clubs as well. The Senior Coquitlam Angels and their predecessors, the Red Sox, since 1988 along with the Pacific International League’s Coquitlam Athletics (1992-98) among other recreational leagues and teams have all used Mundy Park as their home base. The park was established as a multi-use facility with seasonal activity by, primarily, soccer and baseball groups. Even Centennial Secondary School played some home football games there for a short time in the 1980’s. With park lighting and a good grass playing surface, Mundy Park was considered a premier level field for some time. But time and other park priorities changed that. Mundy Park fell

behind with other similarly used parks and, notably, the new parks being built throughout the surrounding metro region.

cooperative venture has been realized with the following major facility improvements and/or additions now in place at Mundy Park:

The park did not have, however, any amenities for the players or spectators including washroom, dressing rooms, an operating concession or adequate equipment storage facilities. Temporary fixes were attempted by both the playing groups personnel and the City Parks and Recreation staff. Other parks priorities and budget constraints were often cited at the Coquitlam Field Sports Association meetings.

◗ An upgraded diamond infield turf cut to standard official baseball specifications completed in October 2009.

In 2003, the Reds organization, lead by Mike Waggett, together with the Metro Ford soccer organization and the City of Coquitlam agreed to a design plan for a multi-use facility building for Mundy Park to address some of the park’s short-comings. It was built the next year as an initial Mundy Park improvement plan initiative. With the completion of the Coquitlam Town Centre Sports Complex in 2008, the soccer groups relocated its activities, leaving the baseball groups as the primary Mundy Park field user. The recognition that Mundy Park was slated for an upgrade plan as supported by the C.F.S.A. committee has spear-headed a renewed interest by the attendant parties to set a number of timely project initiatives. This

◗ A rebuilt score booth enclosed for added comfort and park use. ◗ Bleacher seats upgrade for a more comfortable setting.

◗ A replacement of the Mundy Park field lights with a state of the art installation that was completed in December 2009.

◗ General park cleanup by the City Parks and Recreation crews and parent/player user groups including field preparation, tarping, off field area, facility building, refuse collection bins, fence signage, etc.

◗ An outfield area fence replacement as an ancillary upgrade with the new lights standards; new distance dimensions and fence signage.

A returning visitor or a regular home team attendee will, surely, notice the changes and will, hopefully, appreciate the joint efforts that have been done to date.

◗ A roof replacement of the batting cage as a result of the heavy snow damage in January 2009; a further enhancement of artificial turf flooring has been completed this Spring.

Mundy Park has a setting second to none with the shelter of the tall park trees and landscaped areas and will now be viewed much more positively around the baseball circuit.

◗ A general field condition improvement due to the transfer of the soccer groups and a milder than usual Winter.

We will again hang up our sign of “welcoming” with some pride knowing that Mundy Park has been revived and that more improvement will be identified in the coming years.

◗ Field dugout remodeling with improved visibility, extended space, helmet and bat racks; tarp wrapped enclosure. ◗ A new scoreboard that is solar powered wireless, remote control with LED light.

On behalf of the Coquitlam Reds Baseball Club, the other field user groups and the City of Coquitlam, may we extend a Mundy Park Revival “Welcome to the 2010 season”.

Reds 2010 Season Preview by REDS GENERAL MANAGER BILL GREEN

New Head Coach KYLE WILLIAMS will be ably assisted by veteran returning coaches HENRY SOMERS and AL WATSON along with a first year coach TYLER WILLIAMS. GM and Program Coach BILL GREEN will also be on hand. CATCHERS A strong, solid core of receivers will be utilized effectively with second year Red BRENT FOREMAN looked to be a team leader with his sound overall game skills and steady, productive bat in the lineup; Redleg grads BRIAN NICHOLAS, a strong arm talent with a powerful bat and GREG LABRANCHE, a developing receiver, will also see playing time at 1B and OF respectively. All three are grade 11 players with future potential.

INFIELDERS An overall team strength at each position. At 1B, North Shore transfer KURTIS MALM is defensively strong with good game instincts along with a contributing bat; returning Red TANNER WHITE has a strong look, an improving player with gap power strength will also play 3B; ex-Redleg JORDAN VARGA has an aggressive bat to play at 3B or OF as needed. 2B will be manned by PBL Allstar T.J.WATSON who has a valued strength as a utility role player at SS, OF and on the mound and will be expected to be the team leader as a grad senior. Redleg grad STEVEN KANDBORG will also vie for 2B playing time as a good defensive player and contact hitter. ALEX CALBICK returns as a 5th year Reds program stalwart achiever at SS and 3B; his Canadian Junior National Team commitments will limit his availability and his batting strength

will be missed in the middle of the lineup. Talented Redleg grad KYLE JOEL, who shows good hands, feet and instincts to play SS will compete for time as well as being a mainstay on the pitching staff. 3B will be covered by a rotation of versatile players TANNER WHITE, JORDAN VARGA and ALEX CALBICK on occasion. All can play defensively and will be expected to be solid run producers for the team.

OUTFIELDERS The list of seasoned outfielders is short with heavy 2009 graduations. BRANDEN BERRY has the athleticism to play OF with good range and arm along with an improving batting approach; senior grad GIORDI MOLINARI has good size and strength and is looked upon to provide power stats in the middle of the order. Catcher GREG LABRANCHE has OF capabilities to play

as well as infielders T.J. WAT-SON, KURTIS MALM and JORDAN VARGA. All will be given the opportunity to get alternate position playing time with productive aims.

PITCHERS Though lacking depth but not talent, the Reds staff will compete against any opponent. Led by lefty MATT TRIMBLE, a projected top level PBL starter with three solid pitches of pro interest and JAMES CAIN, a mechanically sound right hander who throws strikes. Top ‘09 Redleg pitcher KYLE JOEL competes hard with a mound presence, good location and command of all of his pitches. Returning Reds T.J. WATSON has a live arm with upper velocity and experience at the PBL level, and JARED POIRIER in his second year with developing pitches and improving command.

Score Card

Coquitlam trio spark Valley to u-18 polo gold Coquitlam’s Alex Vazeos scored two goals including the game winner as B.C.’s Fraser Valley Water Polo Club defeated the Ottawa Titans 4-3 for the gold medal at the boys under-18 national club championships two weeks ago in Halifax. Fraser Valley, which is based out of Langley, built up an early lead on markers by Nathan Kotylak and Vazeos in the first quarter. Cole Wagner made it 3-0 with 28 seconds to play in the second. Ottawa scored to cut the deficit to two before Vazeos posted the game winner early in the third quarter. The Ontario squad made it a onegoal game but were unable to net the equalizer. Vazeos was selected one of the players of the game, and ended the fivegame tournament with four goals. Both he and teammate Ethan D’Souza picked up player of the game honours during the round robin. Also contributing was Michael Blair. They advanced to the championship contest by beating York 7-3, and edged Quebec’s DDO 7-6 in the quarterfinal. The Coquitlam-based Pacific Storm finished in ninth place, crushing Laval 16-6. Their roster includes a trio of Coquitlam players — Nicholas Bigiolli, Paul Spooner and two-time player of the game Brandon Winship. Winship was one of the Storm’s top shooters, finishing with seven goals over five games. The 14-team tournament was the first national club water polo championship hosted in Atlantic Canada in 25 years.

Storm secure polo bronze

It was a bronze finish for the Pacific Storm at the 18-and-under women’s national water polo club championships in Montreal last week. The Storm, which include local talents Kim Bassett, Ashtyn Bevan, Johanna Cryer and Christina Kouvousis, knocked off CAMO club of Montreal 5-2 in the third-place matchup. Kouvousis’ only goal of the tourney came in the second quarter of the final, proving to be the game winner. The Storm suffered a semifinal setback, 6-3, at the hands of the eventual tournament champion Calgary Renegades.

Kevin Hill/NOW

Going for the block, Dr. Charles Best Blue Devils’ Ida Vitez, right, closes in on Seaquam’s Nicole Gibbons during Best’s 4-2 victory on Tuesday in the opening round of the Fraser Valley AAA championships. Best, Centennial and Port Moody all won their first games.

Devils, Cents and Blues survive Valley openers

It was the start they had planned for and the finish they hoped to have. Just a few hiccups in the middle marred what was a strong outing as the Dr. Charles Best Blue Devils began the senior girls Fraser Valley AAA soccer championships with a 4-2 doubling of Seaquam. Kaila Henly’s marker just 10 minutes into the fray gave Best an early lead. The Delta rival however, demonstrated some early finesse of their own to tie the game. A few injuries to starters caused Blue Devils coach Alfonso Napoletano to shuffle his lineup, with the result being a momentary stall in progress. In the second half, Best reclaimed the lead on Selina Lynn’s goal, taking advantage of her speed on the outside to beat the defender and slot the ball

to the bottom corner. Henly cashed in her second of the game, a leftfooted volley from outside the 18-yard box, followed by an Ida Vitez’s goal that put it away. “Their team had a couple of very quick and talented strikers, but our defence that has played well all season did alright to contain them,” said Napoletano. The next test is a familiar one — as Best squared off against North league rival Port Moody yesterday (past The NOW’s deadline). “Our team understands that the key for us to continue being successful is for everyone to continue being dedicated to the team, come to every game with a strong competitive attitude, and believe and trust in each other and our system,” the

JOVAN BLAGOJEVIC

Coquitlam Metro-Ford JR. WOLVES

Last weekend, the Metro-Ford Jr. Wolves qualified for the Under 21 Provincial Cup final by soundly defeating the UBC Metropolitans by a 6-1 margin. JOVAN BLAGOJEVIC once again led the way with yet another superlative goalscoring performance. Not only did Blagojevic score 4 times, but he also set up another goal with a welltaken corner kick. Jovan’s first goal was scored late in the first half on a wicked free kick from well outside the penalty area. His second goal came midway through the first half after having received a great pass from Milad Mehrabi. Jovan scored his third goal late in the game, this time on a clever pass from Sasha Vukovic. Blagojevic rounded out the scoring near the end of the match on a long-range blast that gave UBC’s goalkeeper no chance whatsoever. For his remarkable performance this past weekend, and throughout the season, JOVAN BLAGOJEVIC has been named Coquitlam Metro-Ford Player of the Week Ask any of our sales staff for your NO HASSLE free trade appraisal!

coach added. The Centennial Centaurs also kicked off the Valleys with a win, edging Sardis 1-0. It only took three minutes for the Cents to score, as Olivia Aguiar took a long throw in, beat a defender and fired a rising shot past the Sardis goalkeeper. But that was all the offence on the day. While the Centaurs controlled the play the rest of the game, pushing forward with a handful of scoring chances, they were unable to add to the scoresheet. It wasn’t necessary, as Marissa Burns collected the shutout and turned aside both shots she faced. One of Sardis’ better scoring chances wasn’t a shot

Clan remember Mondor with meet

In their final tune-up before the NAIA Outdoor Track and Field national championships, the Simon Fraser University track and field team will host the inaugural Emilie Mondor Invitational tomorrow on Burnaby Mountain. The meet, which starts Saturday, 9 a.m., is named in honour of former Canadian Olympian and Clan athlete who was killed in a car accident in 2006. By holding the competition in Mondor’s honour, SFU head coach Brit Townsend hopes to pay tribute to the athlete who was an inspiration and friend to many. “Emilie was just such an inspiration when she competed for us at SFU,” said Townsend, who coached Mondor at SFU. “She was passionate, motivated and had great determination to be the best. She was just an inspiring athlete and one of the best to come through our program.” With 24 athletes having posted qualifying times for the NAIA championships, Townsend hopes it will serve as a source of inspiration head-

ing into the last lap of the season. “We are not focused on setting personal best or running ourselves into the ground right now, our main goal for those who have qualified is to stay sharp, positive, confident and healthy.” Among those with good reason for confidence are some SFU athletes who are ranked among the top athletes in their events in the NAIA. On the women’s side SFU dominates the 800 m rankings, with five athletes occupying five of the top-eight spots. West Van’s Helen Crofts sits first overall, while juniors Jessica Smith and Brianna Kane are second and third, respectively. Also joining them in the top eight are Angela Shaw and Ali Hudson, at seventh and eighth overall. Jumper Priye Iworima, who finished third overall in the long jump at last year’s NAIAs, is rated 10th this year. For the men, teammates Ryan Brockerville (3000-metre steeplechase) and senior Kevin Friesen (5000 m) are both ranked second in their sports.

Port Coquitlam’s Curtis Dickson, above, is aiming to cap off his senior collegiate lacrosse season with a big win — an NCAA championship. He scored five times in Delaware’s 12-9 upset victory over Towson in the Colonial Athletic Association final on Saturday. Named the CAA’s Player of the Year, Dickson now focuses on a strong start in the NCAA tournament opener Sunday against No. 4-ranked North Carolina.

at all, as Kianna Leung raced back and foiled a semi-breakaway in the second half. Defender Aliya Boulanger and midfielder Jenny Gluska also turned in standout efforts. “We had made a commitment to play better defensively, and we did,” Centennial coach Larry Moro said. “Gluska owned

the left side of the midfield with her attacking runs.” They had to play Valley East regular season champion Lord Tweedsmuir yesterday. It’ll be important to capitalize on a few more of their scoring chances as the tourney advances, Moro said. “We were very dangerous on corner kicks so we’ll want to convert on a couple of those as well.”

Underdog Port Moody, meanwhile, clipped No. 6-ranked Elgin Park 3-1 on goals by Danae Harding, Lindsy Hill and Miyoko Mckeown. Key contributions came from goalkeeper Jenna Kara, Kelsey Atherley, Alex Florian, Guiliana Obregon and Cassie Sakowicz. In the other game, the Terry Fox Ravens fell 2-0 to South Delta.

Rhythmic duo grab gold for Grace It was top step all the way for two Grace Rhythmic Gymnastics Club athletes last month. Alina Povetkina and Alisa Shapira joined forces to capture first place in duos silver for the group hoops routine at the Western Regional championships in Victoria. Povetkina also recorded second all-around in the individual competition, sparked by gold in level 4C rope skills. She also finished second in individual hoop and third in ribbon. Shapira posted the fifth-best score in level 5B

hoop, and sixth in ball routine. • Coquitlam’s Erina Cho proved to be the fastest female in the under-16 division at the 26th annual 10K Vancouver Sun Run recently. The Dr. Charles Best student was first among 1,997 competitors with a time of 42:19 minutes. Also posting a division-winning time was PoCo’s Tina Connelly, in the Female 35-39 division with a time of 36:29, and Coquitlam’s Mark Bomba, who won the Men’s 40-44 division in 30:57.

Aries March 21 - April 19: Settle into a few days of rest Sunday to noon Tuesday. Soon, you’re going to be very busy. Woo no one Sunday/Monday – love affairs started then would be short and disappointing, or long and disappointing. Romance is the main theme Tuesday eve to Thursday – and it’s complex! Illusion runs everywhere, almost like an elf; but clear, sober sight alternates. Stick with the latter. The same applies to creative and speculative ventures. Thursday night begins four weeks of travel, paperwork, details, calls, casual contacts and siblings. It starts with a major decision about work, duties.

Cancer June 21-July 22: This is a week of choices, of opposite extremes, and an attempt to reconcile or bring together competing people or ideas. The “poles” involve communications, relationships, ethics, ideas and philosophical (or religious) convictions, law, education or travel. E.g., do you travel to the next town, or to Africa? Attend college or night school? Remain “just friends” or get married? Both choices are valid. But: don’t fall in love before Tuesday dawn, and don’t fall for sexual illusion mid-week. The “casual” breeds partnership; the long, elevated, legal, international point to work luck.

Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: Mysteries & dark attractions give way to understanding and the light of love Thursday night onward. Don’t chase love Sunday to Wednesday: a long-term disappointment lurks. If you break up Wednesday, consider yourself lucky. Despite these dire words, mid-week finds you actually happy, flirtatious, optimistic and social! (Just forget infatuation.) Sink into rest, solitude and contemplation Thursday night to Saturday: a month of mental expansion, travel, new love and intellectual joy is just beginning. You attract attention, glances Saturday night. But hesitate about love, two more days.

Taurus April 20-May 20: Travel, paperwork, details and casual communications are slated Sunday to Tuesday. Speak carefully – beware of promising something that you have doubts about. Your money interests meet two barriers: one relates to romance, kids, home and family; the other to outside interests, friends, social factors. As the week ages, you might discern that the real problem is not money, but home versus the outside world, kids versus friends, romance versus flirtations, career. Success is yours if you combine them. Rest mid-week. Romance, pleasure bless you Friday/Saturday. A money phase begins!

Leo July 23-Aug. 22: Keep working hard through Thursday –you could take one last big step in ambitious regions Tuesday to Thursday. (Before Tuesday, work quietly, with naps.) You’ve been somewhat suspicious of others, particularly of potential (or actual) partners for over a decade. This trend will fade away after 2011, but for now – this week – be neither suspicious nor gullible, especially Wednesday. All week, financial decisions and choices face you. Choose a long-term outlook, investing, net worth, over “quick money” or mere spending. A month of flirtations, popularity and fun begins Friday!

Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: What had been opportunity turns, late week, into a month of commitment. You’ll either grab an opportunity in a way that binds you, or walk away to seek change. Either works, so follow your instincts. This entire week (and May 23) is filled with choices between competing roads, people, forces. Until Wednesday eve, much of this involves sex, finances, health or commitment. Thursday onward, the choices are “lighter” – friends or a lover, a present indulgence or plan for the future? A casual relationship or a profound one? Lover, indulgence, profundity are lucky – to a degree.

Gemini May 21-June 20: Through Thursday, you remain sequestered, tired, contemplative, quiet. But a month of such is ending. Thursday eve into the weekend you can courageously end a situation, relationship or task/burden. This will be followed by a true surge of energy, optimism and effectiveness. This upsurge might not arrive until May 23, because you struggle all this week, right into Saturday night, with a tug-o-war between home-domestic-property-securitykid-related urges and demands, and those calling you away from home, to career, prestige and ambition projects. Maybe this relates to ending something!

Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: Mellow times draw to a close. Still, you’ll like this week. Sunday to noon Tuesday brings popularity, entertainment, flirtations, optimism about your future (and it’s justified!). Retreat, rest, contemplate and plan mid-week. Scan the horizon to study barriers and how to overcome them. Your energy and charisma rise Thursday night, just as a month of career, ambition, prestige relations and status situations enters. (VIPs favour you to Wednesday.) This week holds both opportunities and challenges in relationships, negotiations and dealings with strangers. You meet someone cheerful.

Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: At last, a month of hard work, boredom and health concerns ends (well, by Thursday night) – the fresh breeze of opportunity enters! Expect relationship excitement, new vistas & people, contracts & agreements, the possibility of relocation. But this week confronts you with a series of serious choices. Though others have treated you affectionately for the last few weeks, now you have to choose (Sunday/Monday) between affection (relationships generally) and ambition. Then, Tuesday/Wednesday, between affection and security or family. Then, late week, between ambition and home. Ah, well.

May 16 - 22 Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: A romantic, creative, pleasurable, sports-filled or beauty-oriented phase yields to a month of hard work and health concerns by Thursday night. But a streak of those good things will last into mid-June. (Best if romance, as the planet causing it is Venus.) Relationships, opportunities and fresh vistas confront you Sunday to Tuesday, but results are mixed. Romance with someone you met (or meet) in a group can succeed, so do casual Starbuckstype friendships and intellectual or legal affairs. But forget co-worker romance, and money’s deceptive. Mysteries mid-week. Gentle love late week! Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: You’re still “confined” to home, domestic and security concerns until Thursday night. Then a month of pleasure, romance, creativity and “winning” arrives! But somehow it comes about through a deep change you make, or it accompanies this change. The smaller the change, perhaps the less of a bang this lucky month ahead will make. (I could be wrong.) The whole week presents a series of challenges or choices. Romance won’t partner with sex, creativity won’t co-operate with money, Sunday to Wednesday. DO NOT begin a love these few days. Late week, money choices. But happiness looms! Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: Though the weeks ahead bring a slow-down, that’s actually good news, because it ends a rather wasteful spinning of your wheels. A travel, paperwork and errand-filled trend ends Thursday night, and a quiet, deep, meaningful few weeks begin. This week presents many choices. You might face the prospect of ending or deepening a relationship early week: the outcomes are, oddly, so similar that I have no advice except this: don’t start a new love (or any) relationship before Thursday. This night to Saturday brings relationship excitement, new horizons: quiet, sober, secure ones. Hmmm. timstephens@shaw.ca • Reading: 416-686-5014
