Trustee doesn’t want sympathy Brenda Bennett-Schneider plans to seek re-election despite battling effects of MS BY

Brenda Bennett-Schneider First-term trustee

Things certainly have become more challenging living with multiple sclerosis, but Delta school trustee Brenda Bennett-Schneider says life, for the most part, is business as usual. The first-term trustee is undergoing treatment at UBC and getting by as best she can since being diagnosed with MS last summer.

She is making it clear, however, she doesn’t want any sympathy. “I’m doing fine. I have my moments but I’m in good hands at UBC. I’m doing yoga and that seems to help,” she told the Optimist in an interview this week. Her voice weakened and strained, the effects of the disease were evident at a recent school board meeting. “Anything stressful causes

things to be worse. My speech has changed and one of my symptoms is speech. It can be slurred, but sometimes it’s fine,” she says candidly. Bennett-Schneider, 42, who has the primary form of MS, says she first noticed something wasn’t quite right back in 2008. Balance issues have affected her the most. She’s developed a tremor on her left side as well as experiencing speech difficulties.

However, she’s quick to point out things could be worse and she likely won’t die from MS. MS is an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system that is composed of the brain and spinal cord. The disease attacks the myelin, which is a protective covering wrapped around the nerves of the nervous system. There’s a wide range of See TRUSTEE page 3

Vision never sees light of day

Southlands Community Planning Team upset its ideas for contentious property ignored by municipal hall BY

SANDOR GYARMATI

sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com

Members of the Southlands Community Planning Team are feeling burned. Saying their deliberations and hard work formulating a vision for the Tsawwassen property never got a fair chance to be heard, some of those who participated in the group are now speaking out. “This has me very upset as a citizen in this community. My faith in democracy is at a very low level now,” Sue Lloyd told the Optimist. The members aren’t pleased a proposal put forward by Century Group president Sean Hodgins, submitted to Delta over two years ago, was handed back without consideration or debate. Hodgins had embarked on his plan to develop the 538-acre property five years ago when he unveiled his initial vision for the Southlands. The 24-member Southlands Community Planning Team, made up of Tsawwassen residents, was then assembled and met for over a year, holding workshops, going on

The process culminated in a design charette that involved a professional design team taking the community’s ideas and devising a development plan. The final result was a plan containing 1,900 housing units in a high-density development, with 42 per cent of the land given to Delta for small-scale farming. Land would also be set aside for green space and

public amenities, including a post-secondary institution. That plan, however, would end up dying on the vine and, earlier this year, Delta council went as far as to propose the Southlands be returned to the Agricultural Land Reserve. A public hearing on that issue was adjourned, and then terminated, after it became clear how divisive the recommendation was for the community. Mayor Lois Jackson then

organized a summit that resulted in Hodgins getting the green light to come back with a new proposal by this summer, one that planning staff would go over with him before it’s unveiled to the public in September. His original plan, though, never saw the light of day with council. “Time and again we asked the councillors to the open houses and give their opinion and sent documents

to them, and the mayor, but ever getting any response. In fact, it was the reverse, with them saying they weren’t allowed to come because it would show bias. Bias toward what? We were exploring options here,” said Lloyd. “Then all of a sudden this group appears calling themselves Southlands the Facts and they get invited to this summit, but where’s our voice?” Helen Kettle, another

member of the planning team, said she’s disappointed all the work by the volunteer group has been ignored. Listing many of the positive attributes of their plan, Kettle said their 15 months of work included surveying residents to gauge the community’s needs. “What came out of it was a diversity of housing for seniors who want to downsize, because there’s limited options available. The other issue was a lot of people wanted to see a sizable portion of the land preserved and we came up with a plan that would allow for farming to actually occur on the land. “There has been very little farming on that land and the people saying don’t build anything on it don’t realize the plan would allow farming to take place by putting some of the profits back into the infrastructure required in order for farming to occur.” The new plan Hodgins will come up with will be discussed at the Sept. 12 council meeting. It’s not known what that plan will look like, other than it must contain a greater percentage of land turned over to Delta.

Protestors dismantle camp

Community and environmental activists who set up a protest camp April 22 to block the South Fraser Perimeter Road construction abruptly dismantled the camp near River Road Thursday. Bob Ages, a Delta resident and Council of Canadians national board member, told the Optimist that road builders FTG Constructors delivered a letter Wednesday to the camp telling protesters to vacate within 24 hours or

they would be served with an injunction. “We had a very thorough discussion last night around a circle about the pros and cons and we decided it was not to our advantage to play on their ground of courts, injunctions and legal fees,” he said Thursday. Ages said they plan to continue the public battle against the $1 billion highway project in others ways, including a community meeting.

for the surgical procedure. Currently on a drug trial, Bennett-Schneider says she intends to run for the school board again in this year’s civic election. “We have a great group of people and I hope we can stop cutting every year,” she says. She hopes the Delta district will closely begin examining how it delivers specific services. Bennett-Schneider grew up on Westham Island in the fourth generation of a

Ladner farming and fishing family. Graduating from Delta Secondary in 1986, she worked in the management and accounting fields. Married with two boys, ages nine and seven, the Beach Grove resident joined the school board in the 2008 as one of seven acclaimed trustees. “Fatigue is a symptom and I told my doctor at UBC, ‘Who knew something other than two young kids can cause fatigue,’” she joked.

MLA among voices against YVR pipeline

Huntington says contentious plan to ship fuel to airport exposes people to undue environmental risks BY

SANDOR GYARMATI

sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com

Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington says she has grave concerns about the proposed jet fuel pipeline proposal for the Vancouver International Airport. The independent MLA’s concerns have been posted on the Environmental Assessment Office’s website now the public comment period for the controversial Vancouver Airport fuel delivery project is over. Owned by a consortium of airlines that use YVR, the Vancouver Airport Fuel Facilities Corporation wants jet fuel barged up the Fraser River to an industrial site on the Richmond side of the south arm of the river. An underground pipeline would then take the fuel to the airport. Huntington said the controversial and much talked about project would expose people to undue environmental risks, which make the proposal detrimental to

the public interest. “Now is not the time to begin navigating fuel on such a large scale through the environmentally-fragile Fraser River delta, especially when other feasible and lower-risk fuel delivery alternatives are available, such as rail transport from Alberta.” Huntington said the environmental assessment application fails to quantify the level of risk based on that of other fuel delivery options available. “Transporting fuel by tanker or barge is higher risk, and in the Fraser River delta, we have a lot to lose. The ecosystem is crucial to the fishery and B.C. economy, yet there are no assurances that measures taken would adequately prepare for an accident or natural disaster. We need to set limits to risk, and the responsibility of biodiversity conservation here should be of key consideration.” Huntington’s comments were included with many

Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington is urging the Environmental Assessment Office to conduct a review that weighs the risks of the proposed jet fuel pipeline against other fuel delivery options. Longtime Richmond Coun. Harold Steves says the plan is not in the best interests of the public. other posted submissions from Richmond and Delta. Most came from Richmond residents and they were almost entirely negative. In his submission, Richmond Coun. Harold Steves, listing his extensive experience in previous oil tanker transport plans, also noted the public hearing process does not consider other options. The option chosen to be most reliable and cost effective to the airlines is the option that is

least reliable and cost effective to the public, he said. “The trucks are being used now without undue hardship, and even the airlines corporation admits it will take 20 years before an upgrade is needed if trucks continue to be used. The argument that the number of trucks will increase from 1,000 trucks a month to 2,000 trucks a month is laughably irrelevant, considering the Vancouver Port Authority is plan-

Delta Hospital continues to improve thanks to the latest major purchase by the Delta Hospital Auxiliary. The auxiliary is buying digital mammography equipment for the hospital next week to the tune of $700,000. The equipment, which will help obtain faster diagnosis of breast cancer, adds to the well over $600,000 in equipment the society donated to the hospital last year. “Yes, it’s already been a big year and this is our big purchase for 2011,” former auxiliary president Elaine Canning told the Optimist as members were gathering at the Delta Town & Country Inn in Ladner Wednesday for their annual general meeting and luncheon. Former Tsawwassenite Rob Baines is taking frozen yogurt world by storm with hip and healthy Snog BY

SANDOR GYARMATI

sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com

A native of Tsawwassen is feeling royal about his frozen yogurt treat being a favourite of Prince William’s new bride. Rob Baines, co-founder of the trendy and popular frozen yogurt company Snog, was thrilled when he learned Kate Middleton is a huge fan of his product. He was even more elated to find out the royal couple intended to enjoy a non-fat Snog on their wedding day last week. “We are in London in five very central locations, so celebrities and royalties are common. Some of our staff gets over excited when Justin Beiber comes to Snog Soho. I am moved with an Annie Lenox appearance in our other Snog shop, but then I am in my 40s,” he told the Optimist by e-mail as he was on his way to Brazil to open another location. Born and raised in Tsawwassen and having attended SDSS, Baines now lives London, England, where he started Snog two years ago with his longtime friend and partner Pablo

Uribe. The emphasis is on healthy ingredients and fresh fruit toppings. Snog uses organic skimmed milk and nectar instead of sugar. The result has proven both tasty and healthy, as well as wildly popular.

“We are in London in five very central locations, so celebrities and royalties are common.”

Rob Baines

“I started Snog as I observed that there were no healthy frozen yogurt companies in the world. Many claim they are healthy by stating they are no fat but, unfortunately, the product is loaded with sugars and chemicals. I saw an opportunity to develop a truly healthy product. Snog is the only frozen yogurt in the world that substitutes sugar with Agave nectar and hence has a low calorie and low glycaemic index,” he explained. Having several shops in London and planning to open several in the Middle

East and South America, the outlets have hip interior designs. “My friend is Calvin Klein and he has helped me appreciate how important it is in retail to create interesting visuals, enticing smells and soulful sounds,” Baines said. The 47-year-old former investment banker, who still has family in Tsawwassen and visits regularly, knows all about breaking new ground in food retail, having set up specialty cafés at some of the busiest tourist attractions in England, including Westminster Abbey. Baines, whose unique frozen yogurt will start appearing on store shelves, has shown he’s not afraid to take a risk. “I really have never experienced fear when creating new businesses, so I try not to focus on risk. The universe plays a lot with the outcome so I just try to create something of value and uniqueness. If is doesn’t work, oh well, next. “I am a big believer in manifesting what you think so I try and keep my thoughts focused and optimistic.”

MURPHY’S LAW So much for the riding being up for grabs. When John Cummins announced his retirement from federal politics in March, ending an almost 18-year run as this area’s MP, there was a school of thought that perhaps now was the time for other political parties to finally make inroads in Delta-Richmond East. Opposition parties often viewed Cummins as a political juggernaut, his personal popularity so high it ensured this riding would remain in the hands of the Tories for as long as he decided to hold public office. But if he was to step down, well, that opened the door to a host of possibilities. That theory was put to the test Monday — and it failed miserably. Kerry-Lynne Findlay, the Vancouver lawyer who was appointed as the Conservative candidate after a controversial nomination process about six weeks ago, made short work of her federal election opponents, garnering a whopping 54.2 per cent of the popular vote. That’s not bad for someone voters in these parts had never heard of just two months earlier. Findlay’s total on Monday was just shy of the 55.75 per cent Cummins received in 2008 and not far off his high water mark, a 56.78 per cent share as a Canadian Alliance candidate in 2000. It actually bettered his percentage of the vote in both the 2004 and 2006 elections. Not to take anything away from Cummins, who provided this riding with principled, outspoken representation for almost two decades, but it’s clear that a right-of-centre platform, regardless of who is championing it, will go a long way in Delta-Richmond East, particularly when the country is leaning that way. I suspect that’s what those who subscribe to another school of thought had been reasoning all along. When Cummins announced he wouldn’t run again, a hastily-called nomination meeting still managed to attract five candidates, all of whom figured winning that coveted spot would almost guarantee their ticket to Ottawa. In contrast, all the other parties quietly appointed their candidates as interest in carrying those banners was nowhere near the level the Conservatives encountered. Findlay now joins Cummins, and Stan Wilbee and Tom Siddon before him, as right-wing MPs representing a right-wing riding. With a Tory majority, she should have at least four years to prove to voters they made the right choice. And when we go to the polls in the future, it’s a good bet that home field advantage will continue.

Findlay has much on her plate as she sets course for Ottawa IAN ROBERTSON

COMMUNITY COMMENT The federal election is now behind us. We have a municipal election in November, and the prospect of a provincial election before fall — to say nothing of an HST balloting procedure before summer. What can we expect from this federal election, aside from a four-year break before the next election? Congratulations to Kerry-Lynne Findlay, our new MP. She has big shoes to fill in taking over where John Cummins left off. According to all-candidates meetings and interviews, her number one issue is the economy, and the elimination of the federal deficit by 2014. She believes “law and order” are on people’s minds. She cites available and timely health care is also a concern and acknowledges we have issues with the Deltaport expansion, South

Fraser Perimeter Road and the TFN development. Quite an agenda! A search for her background, as I didn’t know of her until very recently, indicates she is an experienced lawyer with interests in aboriginal affairs, and has represented clients in several levels of courts plus appearing before both House of Commons and Senate committees. She was named Queen’s Counsel 12 years ago. Included in her municipal experience is chairing Vancouver’s city planning commission. Some will know of her personal challenges of owning a house on the Musqueam Reserve near UBC when the land lease was renegotiated. She ran for the Conservative predecessor party (Alliance) in 2001. While not yet a resident of Delta, she has worked with Cummins on various matters. Meanwhile, Dale Saip, who won the recent Conservative nomination, was sidelined by party officials after they belatedly concluded his financial background made him unsuitable. An appropriate explanation has never been made and has left unwarranted doubt in place. Findlay, who was in second

place at the nomination meeting, was parachuted into place by party officials. What can we expect of our new member of Parliament? Four years of service for us and our concerns? Will she be able to convince those in Ottawa the law and order agenda of building more prisons and longer sentences does not work? Even the tough Texans have concluded that — after a long time. They found that programs to decrease recidivism (committing repeat offences) and more crime prevention works better than bigger prisons. Will she be able to influence the future of the port? Can she stop its expansion and thus the negative impact on our air quality and our ability to move about, to say nothing of its occupation of our precious farmland? My personal hope is that she and many other MPs will bring a respect for Parliament that has been sadly lacking recently, leading to the allegation of contempt of Parliament. We do not need this — we have work to do and rules to follow. To our new MP, best wishes in representing us in Ottawa.

Letters to the Editor

Voters turn to ‘candy land’ their “Good Ship Lollipop” ... with apologies to Shirley Temple and her 1934 movie Bright Eyes. In a land where individual rights and responsibilities are subordinated to the group rights and entitlements of the cradle-to-grave nanny state, the political landscape has been consistently defined by a voting public with an insatiable appetite for government services, viewing Ottawa as a benevolent force to redistribute wealth to all those who want equality of out-

come, rather than equality of opportunity. Freedom, equality, opportunity and achievement: Those are the tenets of a nation built on the belief that individuals are responsible for their own success and learn from their own failures. Sadly, in Canada such sentiments remain alien to all those who prefer to cede personal responsibility to government as a means of absolving themselves of theirs. E.W. Bopp

and other rodeo fans in the effort to raise awareness and funds for the fight against breast cancer by coming to the Friday Night performance and show that you too are “Tough Enough To Wear Pink”. For more information on this great cause check out their website at www. toughenoughtowearpink.com. There will be no shortage of action this year in Cloverdale. All weekend long there will be something happening on stage at the Longhorn Saloon and elsewhere throughout the Country Fair so you can get your boot stompin’ fix in. Really, it’s not all about Bull Riding and Rodeo, there’s a pretty good party scene throughout the weekend too. Favorites such as Appaloosa, Ken McCoy and Brent Lee will all be performing and there will also be a free Sunday Night concert featuring long time favorites Doug and the Slugs. And for the kids, don’t forget about the Parade on Saturday morning starting at 10 AM with over 80 entries featuring clowns, floats, bands, marching units and showcasing both community organizations and commercial entities. For all the information on the entire May Long Weekend at this year’s World Famous Cloverdale Rodeo & Country Fair you can check out their website at www.cloverdalerodeo.com . Giddy up!

There is something going to be happening in Cloverdale really soon! And it is something that has been going on there for as long as many of us can remember. Of course we are talking about the Cloverdale Rodeo and Country Fair. Before you know it, it will be the May Long Weekend and I guarantee that you will be looking for some fun after the long, wet winter we’ve had and I can’t think of any better place to start your summer than with a visit to Cloverdale May 20 – 23, 2011. The Cloverdale Rodeo will once again feature a unique “invitational” format. The Rodeo will feature the top cowboys and cowgirls from around the world and Rodeo fans will get to see these top ranked contestants in all their favorite Rodeo events. Up for grabs this year is $360,000 in prize money. The four main events will be Bull Riding, Saddle Bronc, Bareback (known in the rodeo world as The Roughstock Rodeo Events) and Ladies Barrel Racing. The top twenty-four pro rodeo contestants in each event (as per the 2010 Final World Standings) are invited to participate at the Cloverdale Rodeo. The format of the competition, which marks the most significant change in the history of the Rodeo, will have each contestant compete twice in their Rodeo performance pool. Then the top four cowboys / cowgirls from Pools A & B based on total prize money won will determine the eight Rodeo contestants for the Finals which will take place on the Monday. The Cloverdale Rodeo will definitely be one of the premier events on the Pro Rodeo circuit for 2011. World Champions, Canadian Champions and Calgary Stampede Champions! They will all be in Cloverdale. So if you are a long time Rodeo fan or maybe you are a new Pro Rodeo supporter, you’ll have to make sure you get your tickets! One way to do that is to stop by Stampede Tack & Western Wear in Cloverdale on Highway #10 at 180th Street. They have partnered with Wrangler Jeans to offer a great promotion to rodeo fans. The 7:30 pm performance on Friday May 20th is Wrangler Night and when you purchase a pair of Wrangler jeans or a Wrangler shirt from Stampede Tack & Western Wear, you will receive a free ticket voucher for this performance. What a deal! You get both your cowboy jeans or shirt and a rodeo ticket at the same time! Quantities are limited, so act quickly. You can call Stampede at 604-574-7427 or check out www.stampede.ca for details. To complete your cowboy or cowgirl look, Stampede Tack will also be having a huge sale on Ladies and Men’s boots until May 21st as well as a Scratch & Win for Boulet Boots where you might even win your boots for free! The Friday night rodeo performance is also the “Tough Enough To Wear Pink” night which helps to raise awareness and money for breast cancer research. The Cloverdale Rodeo & Exhibition Association is proud to support the Crystal Gala Foundation, a Fraser Valley Breast Cancer Foundation. Proceeds from the Tough Enough To Wear Pink 50/50 draw at the Wrangler Night Rodeo Performance will be donated to the Crystal Gala Foundation. You too can join the rodeo competitors

$4 million addition made to Charter fleet

Asco Aerospace Canada Ltd. completed manufacturing last week the first titanium bulkhead it will produce for the Lockheed Joint Strike fighter jets. The part is manufactured from a 4,500-pound titanium forging. The bulkhead is one of the largest, most complex components on the aircraft and represents a huge opportunity for Asco to break into the military aircraft manufacturing market. The project has already created numerous high technology jobs and Asco is confident its new relationship with Lockheed will produce additional contract opportunities. Asco is already highly regarded in the commercial aircraft sector as a longterm supplier to companies such as Boeing, Airbus, Bombardier and Embraer from its division in Delta and European facilities in Belgium and Germany. *** The arrival of eight state-

of-the-art buses will give another competitive edge to Charter Bus Lines, the largest independent motorcoach operator in B.C. The family-owned and operated company recently welcomed 2011 Prevost H345 coaches to its bustling compound, located on River Road in Delta. The high-tech buses, built at the Volvo-owned Prevost plant in Quebec, will cover Charter Bus Lines’ large service region with near-zero emissions and greatly improved fuel efficiency. Equally important to Sheldon Eggen, the longtime president and CEO of Charter Bus Lines, is the new Prevost coaches are equipped with three-point safety belts for use by all passengers. “We are ahead of the curve with that, because there is no legislation yet for safety belts on buses in B.C.,” Eggen said. “We are very excited to be the first

in the region to have buses with this important safety feature.” Each of the new Prevost buses is valued at more than $550,000. “This is one of the largest deliveries of coaches in our company’s history,” Eggen said.

Tsawwassen First Nation artist Remo Williams is working on a wood carving of a majestic owl that will be donated the Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society (OWL). Williams, who’s been involved in many projects, including the restoration of the ferry causeway totem pole, says the just over two-foot owl will be used as an educational tool by the society. The carving, which doesn’t have a name yet, is about a week from completion. Williams notes there are some false ideas about what owls represent when, in fact, they’re a symbol of clear vision of the future. OWL is a non-profit organization whose volunteers are dedicated to public education and the rehabilitation and release of injured and orphaned birds. The society’s 72nd Street facility specializes in raptors. The volunteers deal with hundreds of injured birds every year. For more information visit www.owlcanada.ca.

In the market for a custom birdhouse? South Delta Artists’ Guild members have created birdhouses that will be sold to raise money for the group and the Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society. “Some of them are really quite amazing,” says Lea Price, the guild’s gallery chairperson. The birdhouses, as well as birdthemed paintings, are on display at the Tsawwassen Longhouse Gallery until May 22. There is an opening event set for

Sunday. Price volunteers OWL in attenwith a ple

birds.

Some of the birdhouses are functional while others are not. The creations vary in style, ranging from a mini tiki bar with bottle caps for seats to a paper-mache cat missing out on a fleeing bird to a birdhouse made of bamboo. Paintings at the show feature a range of birds, including swans, owls and exotic breeds. Price says the last artists’ guild fundraiser for OWL brought in over $1,000 for the non-profit society. The opening event goes from noon to 3 p.m. on Sunday.

St. David’s Anglican Church

The real ministers The word “minister” is most often used as a verb, but is used in the title of this column as a noun referring to ordained persons. I draw attention to this in order to correct an often-misunderstood aspect of the purposes of God for God’s church. The church is a corporate body of people who trust in Jesus Christ and have signified this outwardly by baptism in water. So when we speak of church, it is not a pointy-roofed building but a group of people called to serve their communities motivated by God’s love and Christ’s command, and gifted and empowered by the Holy Spirit. This is what the verb “to minister” means. Just as the building is not the church, the minister is not the primary one who does ministry. The real ministers are the body of believers,

living as verbs (ministering) in their homes, neighbourhoods and places of work. What happens in pointy-roofed buildings on Sundays and other days is the primary task of worshipping God, and being equipped for the work of ministry. The responsibility of equipping ministers falls mainly to the clergy. Or as the Apostle Paul wrote in Ephesians chapter 4, verses 11, 12: “Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service.” This column may have the title Minister’s Minute, but let’s put our focus on the hours, days, weeks and faithful years of ministry done by the members of the church, to the glory of God.

SDSS to stage Our Town Students performing ‘one of the great, classic American plays’ BY

DAVE WILLIS

dwillis@delta-optimist.com

S

outh Delta Secondary will be staging “one of the great, classic American plays” next week at Equinox Theatre. Director Richard Cox says Our Town by Thornton Wilder is among his favourite plays and one he’s wanted to do for the last few years. “Really, it’s about people understanding the value of life and having a moment, hopefully not too late, to realize there’s great beauty in it and you need to live each as if it’s your last,” he says. The play, set in the early part of the 20th century in New Hampshire, follows the lives of George and Emily, a pair of characters who fall in love and get

married. The script is a large and challenging one, Cox says, noting SDSS alternates between musicals and dramas each year. “That’s the purpose of offsetting the musical years, to give the students something a bit more meaty in terms of story development, character development and story content,” says Paige Hansen, a drama teacher at SDSS who’s producing Our Town. “This play has a lot of depth and I think it will resonate with members of our community,” she says. Hansen also notes they’ve asked a student to be an assistant director for the first time. Grade 11 student Jemma Dash has taken on that role. She says working with Cox has been a good learn-

ing experience. “He’ll bring up tiny little details that I didn’t look at before. He’s opening my eyes in so many more concepts in theatre.” Dash is confident the production will be a good one. “We’ve all put a lot of time and effort into this.” Our Town runs from May 10 to 14 at 7 p.m. There are matinees at 1:30 p.m. on May 10 and 13. For tickets call the Equinox Theatre box office at 604-943-7532. Partial proceeds from ticket sales will benefit the Children’s Hospital neurosurgery ward. Hansen says over 30 local businesses have stepped up as sponsors and there will be a silent auction on May 14.

Sidekick revisits The Foursome to wrap up 14th season BY

DAVE WILLIS

dwillis@delta-optimist.com

The Sidekick Players are revisiting a Norm Foster comedy to wrap up their 14th season. The Foursome is set to begin next week at the Tsawwassen Arts Centre.

“We laugh all the time in rehearsals. It’s such a funny play,” says director Carroll Allan. Sidekick performed The Foursome as a dinner theatre back in 2006 at the Tsawwassen Golf and Country Club. Allan says that show was very success-

ful and Sidekick wanted to do an encore production. The story is about four old college friends who are home for a 15-year reunion. They share their successes and failures when they get together for a round of golf. “It’s like the male equivalent of a chick flick,” says

Allan, who counts the play as Foster’s funniest script. Three of the four actors (Steve Girardi as Rick, Todd-Elliot Gates as Donny, Dean Sanderson as Ted) from the 2006 production are reprising their roles. Dean Day will play Cameron.

Day is “doing awesome” with the role, Allan says. “The other guys just can’t get over how well he’s done. As far as personality goes, it’s like they’ve known each other all their lives.” The Foursome will run from May 11 to 21 (Wednesday to Saturdays

only) at 8 p.m. There’s a matinee performance on Sunday, May 15 at 2 p.m. Tickets cost $18 for adults and $15 for seniors or students. A table of four costs $60 (based on adult prices only). Call 604-288-2415 to reserve tickets.

Exercise and the brain Well on Your Way Remember that drug commercial in the ‘80s? The one where they used an egg to represent our brain and stated that, “This is your brain,” and then a mysterious hand cracked the egg in a pan and the voice-over exclaimed, “and this is your brain on drugs.” It was a very powerful commercial, and even 20 years later I still remember it. Well, I think I have part two to that commercial. It’s a little bit more upbeat and focused on exercise (no surprise coming me from me, right?). Here it goes: same mysterious hand holding

Celebrating 32 years

an egg, same voice over claiming this is our brain and then — with magician hands flashing about the screen — all of a sudden that little chicken egg is now an ostrich egg, which is humungous compared to a regular egg. Meanwhile the voiceover ominously states in the background, “And this is your brain on exercise.” Can you picture it? The ostrich egg is over seven times larger than the first egg, thereby showing the viewing audience that with exercise the brain can get bigger, just like any other muscle in the body. I think it would work. We’ve always known that exercise improves our physical health, and now we know it improves our mental health too. As it turns out, our brain is not

With a newly renovated 20,000 sq ft showroom showcasing quality indoor and outdoor home furnishings

as hard-wired as we once believed. It is actually very dynamic, constantly fluctuating in size. You see, the brain responds to exercise much in the same way as the heart, lungs and muscles do. Through exercise it can change its structure and function by adding new neurons, making new connections between neurons and even creating new blood vessels. Walking is especially good for your brain. It increases blood circulation and the amount of oxygen and glucose that reach your brain. Walking is not strenuous, so your leg muscles don’t take up extra oxygen and glucose like they do during other forms of exercise. As you walk, you effectively oxygenate your brain. Maybe this is why walking can “clear your head” and help you to think better. Now if you want to take it up a notch, running is also a brain-booster. A jog around the block can affect your hippocampus, the

region in the brain linked to learning and memory, and known to be affected by Alzheimer’s disease. If aerobic exercise isn’t your thing, then you will be pleased to know there is a new generation of research starting to come out about the benefits of strength training and the brain. Particularly interesting is a new study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine that found resistance exercising may help minimize cognitive decline and impaired mobility in seniors. The long and short of it is this: severe mental decline, such as dementia, is usually caused by disease, and most age-related losses in memory or motor skills simply result from inactivity of the body and a lack of mental exercise and stimulation. In other words, use it or lose it, as well as move it or lose it. PJ Wren is a local fitness coach and writer in the Delta area. She can be reached at www.fitnesswithpj.com.

One of the outcomes that resulted from the passion, pain and suffering for their lost way of living was a new form of dance: flamenco. “I am very excited about our performance this year,” says Bev Mantovani, owner and choreographer of Los Gitanos Spanish School of Dance in Tsawwassen. “My quest in life has been to educate my students and audience on flamenco. This performance does exactly that. We are depict-

Amazing Sherbino eyeing London 2012 21-year-old from Tsawwassen captures Vancouver BMO Marathon and will attempt to qualify for Summer Olympics She may be a long distance specialist, but KeddiAnne Sherbino is in the fast lane towards becoming an Olympian. Just seven months removed from running her first-ever marathon, the remarkable 21-year-old from Tsawwassen is now Canada’s best hope to run the storied distance at the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London. Sherbino’s soaring stock took a significant leap Sunday when she became the first Canadian woman to win the BMO Vancouver Marathon since 2003. Her winning time of two hours 43 minutes 38 seconds was 10 minutes faster than her debut over 42.2 kilometres and puts her in range of the Canadian Olympic team qualifying standard (2:29.55). Not bad for the former

South Delta secondary school student council president who didn’t even start competitive running until the summer of 2010. Also keep in mind, marathon runners typically don’t hit their peak years until their early 30s. The happy-go-lucky Sherbino was a late entry for the Vancouver Marathon and had modest expectations, even convincing many of her friends not to bother coming out to cheer her on. “I told my friends it wasn’t a big deal,” laughed Sherbino, who at least had some family members greeting her at the finish line. “It really was a last minute thing and I was hoping to maybe win my age category and be top 10 among females.” She still doesn’t run with a watch and only knew she was the first place female runner thanks to a lead cyclist going along with

her. “I heard about some of the international runners and the thing is you don’t know who is behind you,” she continued. “I just kept going, running my own race and mentally pushing myself.” The first place finish earned her $2750 in prize money but, even more importantly, got the attention of schools and elite track and field programs. Sherbino did her best to play down the interest but admits she has been approached. She has been residing in Kelowna, living with her sister and attending UBC Okanagan, while also working part-time at Fresh Air Experience — an outdoor and athletic equipment store. Naturally, she is the top salesperson when it comes to running shoes. “I’m just taking it one day at a time. We will see who approaches me and

see what comes my way,” she said. “I was leaning towards going to Simon Fraser but right now I’m open to just about anything (including south of the border). I’m at the point of my life where I can be flexible.” Sherbino had been entering 10k runs leading up to Vancouver and will continue a similar competitive schedule over the next few months. The hope is to build momentum to take a serious attempt at qualifying for London by participating in the Toronto or Victoria Marathon this fall. That will also coincide with the cutoff date for the Canadian Olympic team. In the meantime, she will continue to train and run with a beaming smile, enjoying her newfound passion that happens to make her a world class athlete. “I’m doing this because I want to and I love it,” she added. “Sure there is

Tsawwassen’s Keddi-Anne Sherbino was all smiles as she raced to victory in last Sunday’s BMO Vancouverf Marathon.

Two-sport standout Mitchell Jones has accepted an offer to play hockey at the University of Northern Michigan Wildcats for the 2012-2013 season. The Delta native, who also is a standout lacrosse player, had a breakthrough season as a defenceman in the B.C. Hockey League with the Surrey Eagles. He proved to be a scoring threat from the back end, putting up 11 goals and 31 assists. He was named the team’s top defenceman. The 6-foot-3, 185-pound former Richmond Sockeye is excited about the opportunity that playing for Northern Michigan will give him. “I’m really excited to be going there; they have a great hockey program and I feel that coach (Walt) Kyle can really help me develop for the future. “I really like the school; they have a great campus and some very nice facilities. I’m looking forward to getting a chance to play hockey for another four years.” Northern Michigan plays NCAA Division I as part of the the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. Their conference includes teams such as Miami of Ohio and Michigan State. Jones also thrived in the Delta Minor Lacrosse system, playing up to the intermediate “A” level.

Junior Islanders open regular season with split BY

Minus two opening night performers, the Delta Islanders looked like a completely different team when they travelled to historic Queen’s Park Arena Tuesday night to face the New West Salmonbellies. Coming off a very impressive 14-8 triumph over the Victoria

MARK BOOTH

After making it look easy in a season-opening win against the Victoria Shamrocks, the Delta Islanders struggled to find the net in a 7-2 road loss to the New West Salmonbellies.

Shamrocks to kickoff the 2011 B.C. Junior “A” Lacrosse League season, the Islanders came crashing back down to earth in a 7-2 loss to the Salmonbellies. After filling the net against one of the league’s perennial powerhouses,

second period goals by Mike Mallory and Chris Jones were all Delta could muster in the Royal City. It was the Salmonbellies’ first win in three starts, which includes a 13-8 loss to Victoria. The only bright spot was the Islanders’ sound defensive play and the 42-save performance of goaltender Blake Duncan that at least allowed them to

stay within striking distance. The visitors only trailed 3-2 after 40 minutes when the Bellies broke the game open with a trio of third period goals in just over six minutes. Three nights earlier in Ladner, the Islanders

made it look easy against a Shamrock team that has given them nothing but fits over the years. They raced out to a 4-1 first period lead and were in cruise control the rest of the way. Third-year veteran Steve Higgs sparked the impressive start with a pair of early goals, then completed his hat trick with a power play tally in the third period. The Victoria Steve native was unavailable for the New West game. So was intermediate call-up Sam Clare who also had a major impact in the win over the Shamrocks with four points, including a pair of goals. Look for the Ladner native, along with teammate Eli McLaughlin, to be key contributors at the junior level when they are not suiting up for the intermediate “A” Islanders. Veteran Ryan Keith also enjoyed a productive night with two goals and two assists.

Michael Berekoff scored twice and added one helper, while Jones and Mallory had three point nights with one goal each. Cody Hawkins and Andrew Schwab also scored. Matt Messneger chipped win with a pair of assists and won 11 draws in the face-off circle. Duncan finished with 42 saves. The Islanders visit the Nanaimo Timbermen tonight and host the Higgs Langley Knights next Saturday. Boxla bits.... Delta Islanders are off to an impressive start in the B.C. Intermediate “A” Lacrosse League with three straight wins out of the gate. Delta has defeated Burnaby (1710), Coquitlam (12-6) and Langley (14-12). The Islanders are in New West tonight for an early season showdown of 3-0 teams, then host Nanaimo on Sunday at the South Delta recreation centre. Game time is 1:30 p.m.

OWEN, BRUCE DOUGLAS

1927 - 2011 Bruce Douglas Owen, PhD, died at the age of 83 on Monday, May 2, 2011 in the Delta Hospital in BC. He was born on October 1, 1927 in Edmonton, AB. Bruce pursued a lifetime career as a Professor of Animal Science, retiring from the UBC Faculty of Agriculture in 1991. Following the completion of a BSc (Agriculture, 1950) and an MSc (Animal Nutrition, 1952) from the University of Alberta, he spent several years working at Lederle Laboratories in Pearl River, NY and at the Canada Department of Agriculture Experimental Farm in Beaverlodge, AB. He completed a PhD (Animal Nutrition, 1961) at the University of Saskatchewan and immediately began an academic position there in the Faculty of Agricultural Science. In 1977 he accepted a professorship at UBC, where he remained until he retired. At the time of his death, he lived in Tsawwassen, BC. He is survived by his wife Jean (nee Dickie), sons David (Mary) of Vancouver, BC, and Douglas (Donna) of Westport, ON, grandchildren Alexandria and Kaleb, and his loving companion Greta Gill. Bruce loved children and all animals (especially his faithful schnauzer Riser), and appreciated healthy debate on matters relating to science and animal health. He enjoyed playing violin and listening to classical music, and was an avid concert and opera attendee. His passion for cars is legendary. The family gives special thanks to the St. Paul’s and Delta Hospitals for their excellent care, and to the KinVillage in Tsawwassen, BC for their continued love and special care of their mother and grandmother, Jean. A Service of Remembrance will be held on Thursday, May 12, 2011 at 10:30 am at Tsawwassen United Church, 693 53rd Street, Tsawwassen, BC.
