Retiring MP cleans out office in Ottawa after almost 18 years, but isn’t ready to give up politics completely BY

It’s goodbye but not farewell to longtime Conservative MP John Cummins. In a telephone interview with the Optimist last week, a relaxed and content sounding Cummins, 69, was in the middle of cleaning out his office in Ottawa. He announced his retirement from federal politics shortly before the writ was dropped for next Monday’s election, leaving the door open for someone else, for the first time in almost 18 years, to represent the riding of Delta-Richmond East. “The pictures are off the wall, it’s coming to a close,” he said. Cummins was first elected with the Reform Party in 1993 following an unsuccessful try five years earlier. It would be the start of a series of even bigger election victories under the Canadian Alliance and then Conservative banners. He easily outdistanced challengers, due in large part to the respect he garnered for speaking his mind. He would become known as a maverick MP, not worried about criticizing his own government, which he did on several occasions, probably to his own political detriment.

It was a younger looking John Cummins voters sent to Ottawa back in 1993. The popular politician won five more elections before announcing his retirement from federal politics last month. Looking forward to no longer taking cross-country airplane trips, Cummins said what gave him the most satisfaction during his time in office was helping individual constituents on their issues. “I always got a great deal of satisfaction out of that, but a lot of credit also has to go to my staff in my office. They were outstanding. “The other thing, on the issues that matter to the community, I think I did my best to represent the community and since I announced, a lot of people came to me saying they really appreciated the fact that I put them first and the party second. “When I first got elected, the one thing I wanted was that when
I was finished, I’d be able to walk down the street and people would say, ‘He did what we sent him to do,’ and have a big smile and say hi. I tried my best to represent the people on those important issues.” Cummins isn’t going out to pasture, though, as he now has his sights set on making the B.C. Conservative Party a major force in provincial politics. Not long after he announced he was leaving federal politics, Cummins did what had been widely speculated and announced his candidacy for the leadership of the fledgling provincial party. Cummins, who had already been working with the Conservatives in an advisory capacity, adds major credibility to the party, but he knows there’s
much to be done before voters will lend their support at the ballot box. “What we’ve had to do is reorganize the party because the party was not well organized when I first got involved about a yearand-a-half ago. Wayne McGrath, the president, has done a pretty good job putting an organizational structure together for the party, but the political structure was something that wasn’t there,” explained Cummins. Saying they’re “laying low” until the federal election is completed, Cummins noted a number of meetings are taking place, including sessions with a newly-formed policy group that is actively developing the party’s policies.
“We have some really talented people there with actual government experience and they’re able to price out and cost a lot of the initiatives that we’ll be posing over time, so the policy initiatives are well in hand.” The party also has many other tasks, including signing up new members and forming constituency associations in every riding in the province. The party has about 50 constituency associations already, noted Cummins. As far as speculation the Conservatives might end up splitting the right wing vote, enabling the NDP to slip back in power, the veteran MP responded, “The whole notion of splitting really comes from the Liberals who are desperately trying to protect themselves. The fact of the matter is they haven’t really lived up to our expectations of providing honest and focused government. I personally don’t trust these guys. “When I look at the way they conducted themselves in Delta, I’m not happy the way they managed the power line fiasco, I’m not happy the way they managed the South Fraser Perimeter Road.” So far, nobody has stepped forward to challenge Cummins for the Conservative leadership. A vote is set for May 28 in Vancouver.

Community and environmental activists who’ve gathered near the banks of the Fraser River in North Delta say they’re not leaving as they vow to halt construction of the South Fraser Perimeter Road. The activists set up a tent camp last Friday in the 10700-block of River Road. The contingent includes members of StopThePave. org, local Council of Canadians chapters, the Critical Criminology Working Group at Kwantlen Polytechnic University and others. Having planted trees, the coalition held a press conference Monday to show the camp as well as the clear-cut devastation that has already taken place. Saying they’re hoping the police don’t force them out, Cathy Wilander, a Ladner resident and president of the local chapter of the Council of Canadians, told the Optimist the environmental devastation, which also includes the loss of prime agricultural land, has drawn interest not only locally but

more are needed to ensure “safety in numbers.” Sgt. Sharlene Brooks said Delta police have had officers monitoring that situation and have an operational plan in place. “It’s been very peaceful,” she said Monday. “Of course, we understand and appreciate not everyone supports the South Fraser Perimeter Road expansion project and they have every right to protest.” Gateway Program spokesperson Geoff Freer, noting the groups are exercising their democratic right, said there’s currently
around the world. “With all these groups taking part, it shows the mass appeal and that a lot of people are concerned about this very destructive project, not just environmentalists but also ordinary citizens who don’t want to lose any more tax dollars into this,” she said. The camp comes equipped with supplies, a kitchen and washroom facilities for a lengthy stay, said Wilander. A posting on the Livable Blog’s website urged people to take part in the protest, especially at night because

no plans to move the protestors. Freer said the SFPR project is roughly 25 per cent complete and there are other sections that can be worked on for the time being. The 40-kilometre, fourlane SFPR will run along the south side of the Fraser River, extending from Roberts Bank to the junction of Highway 1 and 176th Street in Surrey. The final phase of construction of the $1 billion project will be completed in 2013, a year later than the original target. According to the Gateway Program, the project is being built to the highest environmental standards and follows a table of commitments. A 15-member community liaison committee for the project has begun meeting. The volunteer committee assembled by Gateway brings together municipal, First Nations, industry, residential, business and other stakeholders to discuss construction-related activities and any associated effects. Municipal officials say longer term is needed to attract subtenants; MLA concerned by lack of public process
“I am absolutely amazed they’ve tied the hands of this corporation (Delta) and this community in this way.”
Vicki Huntington
“Therefore, the head lease requires amending to lengthen the term of the lease and resolve other issues associated with the long-term viability of the airport,” said the staff report. Coun. Robert Campbell, who chairs the Boundary Bay Airport advisory committee, said he is in favour of the lease extension, adding it is part of the “natural progression” of the airport. Not everyone, however, is in favour. Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington was angered
when she learned of the lease extension, saying it’s another example of council making important decisions about the municipally-owned airport behind closed doors and without public input. Huntington, who often argued with Campbell when she was a member of Delta council, told the Optimist the latest decision isn’t in the public interest. “I am absolutely amazed they’ve tied the hands of this corporation (Delta) and this community in this way,” said the independent MLA. “That’s not saying the operator isn’t doing a decent job, it’s just that without a public process we have now basically tied up that land, public land, for the next hundred years with no process. “I said before on council when they did this, that the law requires you to have a public consultation when you’re disposing land, and basically a hundred-year lease is disposing land. I think it’s an unfortunate decision.” In a previous interview, Huntington suggested an independent audit be conducted on the lease and airport expansion.

Delta has extended the lease on the Boundary Bay Airport to the end of this century. Last week’s extension was the second for Alpha Aviation, which operates the municipally-owned airport in East Ladner. Delta and Alpha Aviation first signed a lease in December 2004. At the time, it was set to expire in 2032. A year later, the lease was extended to 2050 and last week it was extended again to Dec. 31, 2099. The municipality granted the first lease extension on the condition Alpha Aviation invest $11 million in the airport by 2010. “To date, Alpha has invested more than $20 million in a new terminal building, fire suppression system for the heritage hangar, fuel farm, booster pump station, runway paving, security upgrades and utilities,” states a civic staff report. Similar to other municipal airports, Boundary Bay operates at a deficit. Longterm subtenants for the adjacent industrial land are needed to generate rental income and help maintain
long-term operation of the airport. However, the staff report stated some potential subtenants and their lenders were uncomfortable with the shorter lease term. Alpha Aviation reported the airport is losing some potential subtenants to other municipal airports.

TED MURPHY
MURPHY’S LAW This one seems like a no-brainer: The least the RCMP can do for the Hutchinson family is review the suspended with pay status of the officer involved in the fatal collision in Tsawwassen 30 months ago. Twenty-one-year-old Orion Hutchinson was killed in October of 2008 when the motorcycle he was driving collided with a Jeep driven by off-duty RCMP Cpl. Benjamin Monty Robinson at the corner of 6th Avenue and Gilchrist Drive. Robinson has been charged with obstructing justice for his actions after the crash, namely heading home to pound back a couple of vodka shots before returning to the scene and blowing over the legal limit. This devious behaviour prevented any type of impaired driving charge from being laid, although obstruction of justice is serious enough the RCMP immediately suspended him. Yet the force has done so with pay, which means Robinson, because of his self-serving actions on that fateful night, has essentially been on a paid vacation for the last two-and-ahalf years. I realize he’s innocent until proven guilty, and I also recognize he has a family to support, but for the RCMP to not even take the time to reconsider the officer’s status is wrong, to say nothing of disrespectful to the Hutchinson family. The Delta police investigated the crash and determined there was enough wrongdoing on Robinson’s part to recommend charges to Crown counsel. The Crown subsequently approved the obstruction of justice charge and then just last week a Surrey Provincial Court judge saw sufficient evidence in a preliminary inquiry to send the case to trial. RCMP policy states officers are only suspended without pay “in extreme cases when it would be inappropriate to pay a member.” It seems to me this case qualifies, but should the RCMP have any doubt, a review would clear it up. Simply ignoring the situation, and the inquiries of the victim’s family, isn’t the right way to go, procedurally or morally. Three separate entities of the justice system have had a look at the case and all have determined there is a degree of culpability on Robinson’s part. Surely that should be enough for RCMP officials to revisit the file. An officer is sworn to uphold the law, so when one of them is charged, particularly with something as significant as obstruction of justice, it’s a blight on the entire policing community. The RCMP’s handling of it — or perhaps non-handling is a more accurate description — is only compounding the problem.
Five days and counting until it’s time to come up for air SYLVIA BISHOP
COMMUNITY COMMENT Election day is like a beautiful piece of music played by an orchestra. Each section of the orchestra contributes a sound, and a mood. And while each section may have its turn to shine, in the end, all the sections will play together on the way to a grand finale. I think about this as I am currently embedded in a federal election campaign as an organizer with the specific job of getting out the vote, or GOTV as it’s called. This is a somewhat daunting task given the poor voter turnout in the past several federal elections that reached an all-time low of only 58 per cent last time. I’ve been told as many as 96,000 ballots were spoiled Canada-wide in 2009. All things considered, those ballots represent a number that would
make it the fourth largest federal party. This is shameful. Those annoying phone calls you are receiving from people asking you who you are supporting are the only way a candidate can determine where their votes are. In some cases, people get called from more than one campaign as the drive to secure supporters reaches a fever pitch. It’s tough to make those calls, never mind receive them. People are generally polite but it is not uncommon to get some ripe responses. In campaigns with a large ethnic vote, it is really important to have bilingual phoners. For many new Canadians, our political system is foreign and time must be taken to explain the process. Dedicated volunteers generally staff campaign offices. They must be nourished. In my experience, it is fair to say the four food groups in our daily diet have been narrowed down to one, possibly two. Baking abounds, the sweeter, the better. Is coffee a food group? The steady parade of volunteers bringing in goodies is causing belts to loosen a notch or two.
The Optimist encourages readers to write letters to the editor. Letters are accepted on any topic, although preference is given to those on local matters. The Optimist reserves the right to edit letters and the decision to publish is at the discretion of the editor or publisher. All letters must be signed, dated and include the writer’s phone number
In the campaign I am in, there is also ethnic cuisine. Dinners tend to be some of the best tasting Indian food this side of the continent. Chai tea is a regular treat. On Election day, all the work done by a campaign reaches its crescendo. The hard work of the past weeks is tested. Supportive voters are called to remind them to get out and vote. Volunteers may drop off door hangars with the same message. Other volunteers may drive through neighbourhoods knocking on doors of identified voters to ensure they’ve voted or are on their way. Meanwhile, back at the campaign office, all of this information is funneled to a small group of volunteers that ensures every identified voter has gone to the polls, whether they want to or not. Volunteer scrutinizers are dispatched to the polling stations to observe voting and to be present for the count when the polls close at 7 p.m. They’ll be somewhat ahead of the media as they phone in the results of their polls to the campaign office and victory party. Monday, May 2 is Election day. Get out and vote.

Get The Jump On
Editor: How much of the food we eat is grown in B.C.? In 2004, I read two conflicting articles addressing this question. One article, in The Province, said: “Half of all we eat in B.C. is B.C. grown ...” The second, in Country Life in B.C., said, “B.C. has gone from producing over 90 per cent of the food needed to satisfy local demand 50 years ago to supplying just 10 per cent today.” Intrigued by the difference, I contacted the two
authors. The quotes are theirs. The Province author said the 50 per cent figure came from Smartgrowth BC, which in turn got the figure from the Ministry of Agriculture in Victoria. He said the 50 per cent number is “derived by dividing the dollar value of food consumption in B.C. by the dollar value of food production.” The Country Life in B.C. author said the 10 per cent figure came from the Coast Islands Region Farmers Institute, which got the
figure from the Ministry of Agriculture office in Duncan. The author explained: “B.C. Ag is often given to high hype. Over the past few years ministry economists have advised that on Vancouver Island (as in most of B.C.), we really only grow 10 per cent of our needs. If people would stop using such hype and quote us real facts perhaps we could recognize what is really going on. This could provoke us to fix up the mess!” In 2004, we produced 10
per cent of the food we eat in B.C. Today, that figure is bound to be less. So how much more arable land can we afford to destroy by using it to build truck highways like the South Fraser Perimeter Road, giant shopping centres like the one announced on the Tsawwassen First Nation lands and housing developments such as the one proposed for the Southlands in South Delta? Food security? We have none. Wake up, everybody. Joan Green
NDP makes an ‘inspired choice’ in Adrian Dix Editor: I followed both of the provincial leadership races with interest, and I have to say the NDP made an incredibly smart choice with Adrian Dix. Experienced, honest and fiercely intelligent, Dix was the only candidate from either party to make clear policy statements, so people know where he stands. Best of all, he produced credible
plans for how he intends to pay for every promise he makes. B.C. is hungry for positive change. Our environmental policies are a disgrace. Our health and education systems are being slowly strangled. A decade of cuts to our forest service have left this precious resource wide open to abuse, neglect and outright theft.
Our government finances are sinking in debt while we splurge on stadiums, casinos and tax cuts for the wealthiest individuals and corporations. There is not even a system of accountability to check whether those who receive these generous bonuses use them to create a single job. All of this calls for a leader who is not afraid to lead. Dix has shown an
impressive ability to tackle complex problems. He also actually has the courage to take a stand. In contrast, the B.C. Liberals seem to be relying on photo ops and vague slogans about “families.” Overall, I think the NDP made an inspired choice in Dix, who will be good for the party and good for all of B.C. A10 The Delta Optimist April 27, 2011 Letters to the Editor
Federal election voters given choice between stable leadership & chaos The opposition whines and complains about parliamentary chicanery, which is of no consequence whatsoever to the vast majority of Canadians because it has nothing to do with their mortgages, taxes, health, economic security and personal safety. In the event the Conservatives win another minority government, Parliament has to be con-
vened to pass a budget because the new fiscal year has begun. There is nothing in those circumstances to prevent the opposition junta from defeating the budget and forcing a second election in one year. The choice to be made in this election is between stable, competent leadership and chaos. Steven Austin
Car-centric development not needed in these parts
Editor: This paper has published a variety of letters commenting on the Tsawwassen First Nation’s development plans, some for and some against. I am sickened by the fact some of the best agricultural land in B.C. (which should be used for growing
food and possibly agri-tourism related business) will instead hold a mega industrial development, complete with possibly 200 stores, 1,864 homes, storage area for Deltaport containers and who knows what else (perhaps an incinerator)? Gerry Copeland makes some valid points in a
recent letter, however, I ask, do two wrongs make a right? Can we continue to live in the past, as suggested by Copeland? Today, we are experiencing an energy crisis that could see gas reach $1.50 per litre by summer. Global warming can no longer be
ignored. Water shortages are occurring in many parts of the world. These factors combined could soon lead to both world food shortages and increased cost of food. This special part of British Columbia does not need a car-centric development. Jean Wightman

truth at all to the accusation, unlike the previous Liberal government, which persecuted farmers, hunters and natives with the gun registry and was willfully blind to the fraud and theft of its Quebec operatives. The mass media in Canada are capable of exaggerating what should be purely local matters in Ottawa to national proportion.
Editor: Re: Only two left to sell on ROW, April 23 Congratulations to B.C. Hydro for selling the homes along the rightof-way. A few comments though: 1. By its own admission, B.C. Hydro, a Crown corporation, has lost an estimated $21 million in the process, money that would have paid to have the lines buried and shielded and have the original homeowners not go through five years of turmoil, court and upset in their lives. 2. Another group of homeowners, called the Forgotten 58, was also adamant about being included in the buy-out, as it too did not want to live by these massively upgraded power lines. 3. A new generation of homeowners, who are not as familiar with the serious health risks associated with EMF and water

Lawn looks a little old school Where lawn cutting is concerned, I’ve been pretty much a grid person. Side to side. Up and down. It’s been the way to get ‘er done. There was never any questioning the approach. Faced with the big rectangles — one on the front of the house, the other to the back — it seemed like the obvious way to go. Now, however, I’ve been considering thinking outside the grid — or shall I say, the grass. “I’ve been thinking about doing the diagonal,” I informed the husband the other day. “The diagonal?” the husband responded. “That’s
“we should do something else entirely. As in the circular. Or perhaps we do something really outrageous. As in the willynilly.” “The willy-nilly?” asked the husband. “Yes,” I said. “That would be where you just cut in any direction you choose. It’s kind of like abstract art.” The non-point person nodded. “Well,” he said. “I think I’m going to, um, go to the bank.” He wandered off, leaving me to gaze out the window at the job at hand. The lawn, I decided, will have a whole new appearance this year. But I won’t be going diagonal and I won’t do willy-nilly. I’ve landed on another look. I simply call it hayfield.
PJ’s weight loss challenge inspires participants BY
JESSICA KERR
jkerr@delta-optimist.com
A local personal trainer has the answer for anyone who feels like they indulged in a little too much Easter chocolate. P.J. Wren, who runs Fitness with P.J. in Tsawwassen, is starting her fourth Weight Loss Challenge this weekend. The challenge pits contest entrants against each other to see who can lose the highest percentage of weight. The top three “losers” will win a portion of the entry fees. In the three challenges so far, participants have lost a combined 900 pounds and Wren has given away more than $4,000 in prize money. “With the challenge I am trying to get Delta moving and fit and prizes, like money, motivate people,”
Wren said. “Gaining weight is easy. Losing it is tough. Turn it into a game, and it is a lot more fun,” said Steve Dotto, who has taken part in every challenge. The fourth installment starts with a weigh in on May 1 and over the following six weeks entrants will try to lose weight following a fitness and diet plan of their choosing, although Wren discourages losing more than five pounds a week. “I have been in contact with my top three of each challenge and they have all managed to keep it off. I am very proud of these groups,” Wren said. “P.J.’s Weight Loss Challenge was the catalyst to get me started,” said participant Brad Smith. “Although I began with a simple personal goal
(to fit into my tuxedo on an upcoming cruise) I soon realized I could and wanted to do much better... The challenge was just the beginning; I used this opportunity to change how I lived and how I ate. After the first six weeks I was in a solid workout pattern and drastically changed my eating habits and continued to lose an additional 15 pounds for a total of 42 pounds to date.” The first weigh in for this Weight Loss Challenge is in the gym of the Tsawwassen Alliance Church. Participants will be weighed between 4:30 and 5 p.m. Participation costs $50. The winners are determined by measuring weight loss as a percentage of each participant’s overall weight, instead of total pounds lost, in order to ensure a level playing field, Wren said,

This, the husband who is not the grass-cutting point person. “So what’s the big deal with the diagonal?” he asked. “Is it better for the grass?” I glared at the non-point person. “Of course not,” I said. “It just looks more, well, stylish.” Stylish, too, is what I’d call the checkerboard. You’ve seen it. It’s the one that looks not unlike a latticed pie crust. “That’s pretty crazy,” said the non-grass-cutting point person. “We’re talking a pie crust look for the lawn?” “You cut one row in one direction, and the other in the other,” I explained. “It’s all the rage.” The husband nodded. The husband, who was clearly wanting next to nothing to do with the grass. “Maybe,” I continued,

pretty crazy.” In my household, I’d like to note, I have long been what’s called “the point person” where the grass cutting is concerned. The point person — just to clarify — is the person who decides when the grass is looking decidedly like a hayfield, and then opts to give it a trim. In other words: I cut the grass. I do not know how I came to assume this assignment. I only know that I did. “I’ve been noticing,” I further informed the husband, “that more and more people are doing the diagonal. I’ve been thinking that we’re looking pretty old-school with the backand-forth approach. In fact, we’re probably a laughing stock in the neighbourhood.” The husband nodded.

Tony Barton accomplished what he set out to do last month with his sold out show at Ladner’s Genesis Theatre. Not only did Blue Eyes Too preserve a classic style of entertainment, it raised money for a good cause. Barton provided the audience with two hours of entertainment mixed with great commentary about the life and times of Frank Sinatra while collaborating with Ladner-based jazz trumpet player and musical director Chris Davis. “Frank Sinatra always said that he hoped someday someone would learn to do his art so that it didn’t die where it was at,” said Barton. The show took the crowd back in time to the start of Sinatra’s career and guided it towards the latter part of his performing life. “I felt honoured watching Tony’s performance,” said Dalyce Wickett, communications co-ordinator with the Delta Hospice Society, the recipient of Barton’s philanthropy. “Not

Reach workshop to help parents of picky eaters

Reach’s upcoming workshop aims to provide parents with ideas to create a positive eating experience at home. Workshop presenters Christine Gleave and Andrea Wong are occupational therapists with Reach, helping children in the development of skills that are needed in their daily activities. In addition to eating, this includes other self-care activities such as dressing and toileting, fine motor activities such as holding a pencil, cutting with scissors and drawing, and leisure activities such as swimming, soccer and hockey. This workshop will focus on eating and feeding. Helping Your Picky Eater is appropriate for parents of
children two to 10. It takes place from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at 3-3800-72nd St., East Ladner. The cost is $20. To register call 604-946-6622 ext. 343 or e-mail caroly@ reachdevelopment.org. Reach Child and Youth Development Society is a non-profit organization that has been helping children and families since 1959. Reach offers a variety of programs designed to meet the needs of children from birth to 19. Reach is raising $4 million to build a communitybased child development centre in the heart of Ladner.

Eating is among the many issues that parents worry about with their children. Parents of toddlers often worry about their child eating enough. As a child gets older, parents often worry about their child only eating one type of food, or not eating a balanced diet. Parents also question whether their child is just going through a phase or whether there are other issues influencing their eating habits. As eating can affect a child’s development, these are valid concerns. On Tuesday, May 3, Reach Child and Youth Development Society is offering help to parents with a workshop called Helping Your Picky Eater. This workshop will share information that will help parents determine whether their child is a picky eater or actually has a deeper problem. Parents will also learn the reasons why some children don’t eat, what can influence a child’s diet and different methods to introduce new foods. Parents will leave the workshop with a good idea on how to facilitate a positive eating experience at home and how to expand their child’s diet.

Delta Secondary teacher Wayne McKinnon is overseeing work on a cabin that will end up on East Thurlow Island.
CHUNG CHOW
Student carpenters are at it again BY
JESSICA KERR
jkerr@delta-optimist.com
Anyone who has driven by Delta Secondary over the past few months has probably noticed the growing wooden structure in the construction compound. Behind the chain link fence is the result of months of work by Wayne McKinnon’s Grade 12 carpentry class.
Every year, the class takes on one project, usually some kind of cabin. This year, however, students are continuing the work done by a previous class. Back in 2003, McKinnon said, his class built a cabin for a landowner on East Thurlow Island, near Campbell River, to replace a lodge that burned down. This year’s project will join that one later this
spring. The students started in October and have almost completed all they can do at the school. Once they’re ready, the structure will be disassembled and moved to East Thurlow Island where McKinnon and a group of about 15 students will reassemble and finish the frame. The group will have about a week to complete
the job. Other trades will be brought in to do the plumbing, electrical and all the finishing touches. The two-storey cabin will be about 1,500 square feet. McKinnon said he is already looking for next year’s project. Usually the students tackle an out of town vacation-type property. For more information, call 946-4194.

A20 The Delta Optimist April 27, 2011 Feedback
With just five days left until the federal election, the campaign is now in the homestretch. Before voters go to the polls Monday, they’ll have to make a choice, one that is often based on a number of factors,
including the party leaders, the local candidates and where everyone stands on the issues. The Optimist asked:
What influences your vote on election day?
Shelley Jaffe The party and their platforms.
Sandra Sherman I would probably have to say the platforms.
Jim Campbell The (party) leader.
Pat Marra The party, most of the time.
Last time we asked you:
What do you think of the Canucks’ playoff chances? • 55.17 per cent said they’ll win the cup. • 13.79 per cent said they’ll lose in the conference finals.

Canada comes calling for Tsawwassen’s Roggeveen
Falcon alumni in Europe for national junior team tour BY
MARK BOOTH
mbooth@delta-optimist.com
Since he can’t compete at the 2013 Junior World Cup, Nicolas Roggeveen figures he can at least help get his country there. By the time the event gets underway in India, the 20-year-old field hockey standout from Tsawwassen will be too old to participate in the under 21 tournament. Still, Canada needs to secure a berth and that’s where Roggeveen fits in. Serious preparation began for World Cup qualifying last week when the Canadian team departed for a 10-game European tour that includes matches against Scotland, England, Germany and Poland. A centralized training camp is planned for this summer as well as a homeand-home series with the United States. The national program is working towards the Americas Tournament, likely in 2012, which will see the winner earn a spot in India. “Guys my age are sticking around to help (Canada) qualify,” explained Roggeveen. “Argentina is the biggest competition for our zone and we are building up towards that tournament.”
The Junior World Cup is played every four years which is unfortunate for the South Delta secondary student. For the previous tournament in 2009, Roggeveen was just 18 and would have had to play beyond his years to take a roster spot from an older player. “I’m just born at an awkward stage where you are caught in between (World Cup) cycles,” he explained. “I did have a chance four years ago but, really, I was too young (to be considered for the team). Guys my age just haven’t had this kind of opportunity so it’s kind of nice.” The junior national team currently has a Vancouverbased training program that features about 40 players, including two other Delta Falcon field hockey products — Andrew Kanerva and Jacob Kitigawa. Roggeveen was one of 19 players named to the European Tour roster, while Kanerva earned a reserve spot. It is his second time in Europe in less than six months, having travelled to Spain with the UBC varsity men’s team over the Christmas break for a number of exhibition games and to participate in the Torneo Reyes Tournament in Barcelona.
The UBC program features some Junior National Team members, as well as nine players from the Senior National Team which also trains on a regular basis at the Point Grey campus. It’s given Roggeveen a taste of what it might be like should he decide to pursue a spot at the senior level in the years to come. “It’s been a great place to learn and working with a former national team coach (Shiaz Virjee),” he said. “I get to see how much work (the senior team members) they put into it and it’s incredible. “Even with the UBC and the junior team, I moved into residency for my second term. You have school then you are basically training for two hours. It was too difficult going back and forth (from Tsawwassen).” Despite his hectic schedule, Roggeveen has found the time to give back to the game, serving as an assistant coach for a Falcons U14 boys team. He grew up in the same program and was inspired by one of his youth coaches — Kirk Adam — to realize his potential. At one point, it meant shuffling his career between the Falcons and Vancouver Hawks to continue to play at a high level.

Tsawwassen’s Nicolas Roggeveen is hoping to help Canada qualify for the 2013 Junior World Cup. The 20-year-old left for Europe last week for a national junior team tour. “I started playing baseball, didn’t like it, and field hockey was really the only other spring option,” he added. “It’s just more of a team sport than baseball. I have played soccer and ice
hockey and it’s just one of those sports that meshes all the skills you learn. “It’s really not a difficult sport to get into. There are some intricacies that are a little strange but once you
start playing, it’s fun.” Roggeveen was a dominant midfielder at the club level but has since shifted to left defender when he started playing for provincial and now national teams.
Royals advance to Provincial ‘B’ Cup quarter-finals The result sets up a quarter-final date with Bacardi FC this weekend. Resurrecting their successful 5-3-2 formation employed in previous games, the Royals “ropea-doped” their Vancouver Island opponent and got outstanding performances from Mike Easingwood and goalkeeper Val Wiebe to advance.

The defensive formation caused plenty of close calls and tense moments for the visitors, but either Easingwood was able to break up the play at sweeper or Wiebe pulled off one of his many excellent saves. The Royals scored in the dying minutes of the game when Easingwood made a rare surging run from his side of centre

run into the box. Easingwood’s shot was deflected by the onrushing goalkeeper but the rebound bounced favourably in the air to head home his own rebound. The final moments of the game were hectic with the hosts giving an all out effort to equalize. When the final whistle sounded, many of the Royals collapsed in fatigue.

After securing promotion to the Vancouver Metro Soccer League’s First Division for the 2011-12 season, the Tsawwassen Royals are hoping to add to their breakthrough campaign with a lengthy run in Provincial “B” Cup play. The local side is off to a promising start after a 1-0 road win over Victoria West on April 17.

New look Wanderers blossom into Coastal Cup champions What was supposed to be a rebuilding year turned into a dream season for the Tsawwassen Wanderers. The beginning of the soccer season for the U17 Silver girls team looked bleak with only eight players returning after nine moved up to play gold. Six new players joined rounding the roster out at 14. Before long, the numbers had swelled to 18 as four international students signed up, most with little or no experience, yet all were athletes. The one and only loss this season was in the first game against a team that the Wanderers would later beat quite handedly in two other matches. Coastal Classic Cup group play had the Wanderers pitted against the South Burnaby Vipers — a team that had knocked them out in the quarter-finals the previous year. A win in penalty kicks moved Tsawwassen into the elimination round as group leader, only to face the very same team again in the quarter-finals. This time, the Wanderers dispatched South Burnaby with a 2-1 win but at a cost as Heather Findlay was injured in the last 10 minutes and would be lost for the balance of the season. The cup semi-final was played on the last day of spring break and it proved challenging with only 11 players available. The girls persevered with a 1-0 victory as leading scorer Ruth Shulte-Sutrum notched the winner with 20 minutes to play.
Next up was the North Shore Icicles in the cup final. For this game, 12 players were available, meaning some would have to play out of their normal positions. Using their strength in numbers, the Icicles tried to run the Wanderers into the ground. The ebb and flow was constant as both teams pressed. In the eighth minute of play, off a corner by Jenn Clime, Shulte-Sutrum slotted the ball in the net for a 1-0 lead. Goalkeeper Samantha McComb preserved the win with a fantastic save in the dying minutes. Exhausted but elated, the Wanderers capped off an incredible season (13-1-3) with 46 goals for and just 13 against, as league and Coastal Cup champions. “I like to think I enstill in the girls a love for the game. One where if you work hard, play hard and have fun with your friends, you will create memories and friendships that will last a lifetime,” said coach Kim Findlay. “Of course winning helps.” For cup play, the Wanderers also featured solid defending by Ayla van Agteren, Jamie Coan, Jeanine Gardner and Keara Kingston. Strong midfield play led by Kayla Graham, Meghan Ayers, Madi McCardell and Lucy Norton. Meaghan Snow was also a threat up front. Rounding out the team but unavailable were: Heather Findlay, Zoe Wessler, Gillian Thiel, Rowan Meredith, Jule Fisher, and Cosima Dohr.

Cup win for Titans in curtain call The U18 Ladner Titans retired from youth soccer in fine style with their third victory in five visits to the Coastal Classic Cup finals. The championship game, played on April 17 in Coquitlam, against hometown rivals Ladner Athletics, was greatly anticipated. The Athletics held firm against the dominant Titans, only showing cracks in overtime. Taylor Grant’s corner kick to centre midfielder Amy Bears was passed back to Soraya Premji whose high arching shot found its way underneath the crossbar and into the back of the net. The second goal came shortly thereafter on a perfectly executed pass though a wall of defenders from Lauren Cockill to Titans’ leading scorer, Michelle Haughian, who made no mistake finishing off the Athletics in a 2-0 victory. This year’s playoff run included great goalkeeping from Brittany Hanson and Mary Botkin. Key goals also came from Madison Britz, Alyssa Klimek, Katrina Poon, Alena Silva, as well as Hanson and Botkin. Other tallies from mid-

KINSEY, Iris Rose
It is with great sadness that we announce that Iris Rose Kinsey (nee Neale), 82, passed away peacefully on April 16, 2011 in Burnaby General Hospital. Iris was born December 21, 1928, in Coventry, England to Rose and William Neale. Married to Maurice Arthur Kinsey (Mak) in 1952, they immigrated to Canada in 1956 where they travelled extensively during Mak’s career with the RCAF. Iris enjoyed traveling all over North America with her family and in retirement enjoyed the warm, southern motor home life in the winter months. She was an avid curler and golfer. She loved the ocean and enjoyed her many walks around Boundary Bay, often with a beloved dog in tow. Her interests included family, gardening, cooking, sewing and reading. She devoted much of her time and energy to family and was a caregiver to her mother until she passed away at age 94. Iris is survived by her husband Mak, daughter Jacquelyne (Bradley), son Steven (Alison) and grandchildren Christopher and Sarah. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in memory of Iris to: Delta Hospital Foundation, 5800 Mountain View Boulevard, Delta, BC V4K 3V6, or the Burnaby Hospital Foundation, 3935 Kincaid Street, Burnaby, BC V5G 2X6.

PLETCHER (Solverson), FRANCES (Betty) Passed away unexpectedly on April 14, 2011 in Vancouver, BC at the age of 82. Predeceased by her husband Tony, Betty will be sadly missed by her son Fred (Bev), cherished grandchildren Darien, Ciara and Devon, sister Isabelle, brothers Jim (Edna) and Howard, brothers-in-law Raymond (Judy) and Jim (Elly), cousin Owen (Linda) and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, former colleagues and fellow volunteers. Betty was born in Medicine Hat, AB and started teaching at 17. She earned her Master’s degree from UBC in the 1960’s, and after many years of teaching, spent the latter part of her career as a department head at Langara College. Betty lived cheerfully, enthusiastically and generously, had a strong Christian faith, traveled and volunteered widely and was a very active member of Delta Kappa Gamma, University Women’s Club and Anglican Church Women. She loved sewing, theatre and music of all kinds. She cared passionately about helping poor children in developing countries, homeless girls, battered women and especially the conservation of wild animals and habitat. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, April 30 at 10:30 a.m. at All Saints Anglican Church, 4755 Arthur Dr, Ladner, Reverend Elizabeth Northcott officiating. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to The Betty and Tony Pletcher Memorial Scholarship at Langara College or to the World Wildlife Fund. Kearney Funeral Services • 604-736-2668
HUNT, Alec (b. May 6, 1944 in Slough, England) died in Ladner, BC on April 18, 2011 after a prolonged illness. Alec is survived by his daughters and their spouses: Jay (Lee), Katy (Kyle) and Fiona (Bryan) and his grandchildren: Nicola, Liam, Owen and Anna. Alec, known to his English friends by his schoolboy nickname, Hank, was raised by his mother in West Kirby, England. He met and married Sue Riglin in 1968 and they emigrated to Canada with their 3 daughters in 1975. Alec’s career in BC involved designing cranes and logging equipment. His bad heart forced him to retire early and unfortunately deprived him of active participation in his lifelong love - sailing. Having raced in England from his teens, Alec picked up the sport again in Canada when he joined the Surrey Sailing Club. Alec returned to sailboat racing with gusto and his sailing buddies became his closest friends once he moved to White Rock. Alec had many other interests: in his youth he raced bicycles and was the drummer in a Merseyside band; in Canada he enjoyed nature skiing, camping, fishing and bird watching. We miss him already but we’ll tell stories of him for the rest of our lives. A small memorial will be held at the Surrey Sailing Club, Apr. 29 from 5-7 pm. Please make any donations in his memory to the Heart & Stroke Foundation or O.W.L. Canada.
Due to technical difficulties, the
CROSSWORD will not be in today’s paper. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Survived by his wife Eileen, sister Eleanor (Alan), his children Kenneth, Sheila (Arthur), and Elaine (Brian), and his grandchildren Kieran, Darcy, Sydney and Emmett. He is predeceased by his sister Margaret. Dad was born in Scotland and graduated in Medicine from Glasgow University. After completing Psychiatry in Minneapolis, he practiced in Vermont, Cape Breton, and Greater Vancouver (1979-1996). Throughout his life he was an avid family man, sailor, gardener and bookworm. We will all dearly miss his companionship, green thumb, ‘silly’ humor and guidance. All invited to r e m e mb e r K e n ’ s l i f e a t Cammidge House, Boundary Bay Regional Park, in Tsawwassen, BC on Friday, April 29th from 1 to 4 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations will be collected by the family for the ongoing preservation of Lily Point Marine Park in Point Roberts.
