Kerry-Lynne Findlay holds Delta-Richmond East for Conservatives, who finally win a majority government BY

SANDOR GYARMATI

It’s an exciting time for the riding and the nation, says Conservative Kerry-Lynne Findlay, who handily won DeltaRichmond East in Monday’s federal election. Winning political office for the first time, Findlay beat out five others to secure the seat held for almost 18 years by fellow Tory John Cummins.

Tsawwassen Inn as the results poured in, Findlay said she’s excited to be part of a majority government. “My results here kind of mirrored the national, which is fantastic. I just felt it building

over the last couple of weeks, the momentum of the campaign and the support. I just think what it means for this riding and this country is it gives us a solid mandate we were looking for.” Findlay garnered 54.2 per cent

per cent of the vote, easily outdistancing the NDP’s Nic Slater (23.3), Liberal Alan Beesley (16.9), the Green’s Duane Laird (4.8), independent John Shavluk (0.5) and Libertarian Jeff Monds (0.3).

The Conservatives won a majority with 167 seats across the nation, while the New Democrats made history by becoming the official Opposition with a record See FINDLAY page 3

Second place for Slater & NDP Big gains made from ’08; Alan Beesley finishes third as Liberals don’t fare well locally or on the national stage BY

SANDOR GYARMATI & DAVE WILLIS

Nic Slater made big gains for the New Democrats as he finished second in DeltaRichmond East in Monday’s federal election. At a gathering of supporters at the Tsatsu Shores condo complex in Tsawwassen on Monday night, Slater told the Optimist he had a “low resource campaign” that picked up steam as it moved toward election day. “We didn’t run a high profile campaign at all. Truth of the matter was I was supposed to be a name on the ballot. We ended up running a solid, low resource campaign instead of a medium or high resource campaign. And a lot of people came out of the woodwork to help. The surge (nationally) helped but the people who voted here were part of their own surge.” Slater received 11,189 votes, which was good for 23.3 per cent of the riding’s total ballots cast. That’s up significantly from the 14 per cent the party had garnered in the last three elections. Saying the media can no longer ignore the New Democrats, Slater noted the NDP is seen by more people as a party with strong moral values. “I’ve had a lot of people come up to me in Tsawwassen and Ironwood Mall in Richmond who

were former Conservatives saying they were fed up with the Conservatives and were going to vote NDP. I think it’s a reflection of values and a lot of other Conservatives will see it that way. “This riding has been left out of the picture for the NDP for the last 20 years, as well as the Liberals, but we are now back in the picture. We have a ways to go but not as far as some people think we do. There’s something called critical mass and in any riding

when you reach that things change dramatically. We haven’t reached that yet but we’re in striking distance.” Liberal Alan Beesley ended up with 8,112 votes, translating to 16.9 per cent of the votes cast. He congratulated Findlay for her win but also said he was proud of his campaign. “I think we ran a very strong and elegant campaign given the resources we had,” he said. Beesley, a lawyer and businessman, said he shook thousands of people’s hands in front of grocery stores and coffee shops over the duration of the campaign and that he “savoured and cherished and enjoyed every minute of it.”

FINDLAY from page 1 102 seats, a victory that came largely at the expense of the Liberals, which won only 34, and Bloc Quebecois, which won just four. The Greens also made history by capturing their first seat. In this riding, the Conservatives maintained their strong position, while the NDP’s share increased from the last election. Having run as Canadian Alliance candidate in Vancouver-Quadra in 2001, Findlay said what she heard

most from residents here is the Conservative government was on the right track economically. “They don’t want to mess with that and they see the NDP as the equivalent to raising taxes. They believe we can continue this economic growth with a lower tax objective. “The second thing is people were tired of elections, it’s the fourth in seven years. I met several people who said, ‘I am voting Conservative,

“I think there’s no greater opportunity in politics than to understand and learn about the concerns, dreams and aspirations of the people,” he said. Beesley said massive changes occurred in Canadian politics on Monday. “We have much to learn and what I hope that we do not draw from this as Liberals is the conclusion that negative campaigns and negative ads are now going to be a permanent part of the fabric of Canadian politics.” Nationally the Liberals lost seats and finished third behind the NDP. Local Green candidate Duane Laird came in fourth with 2,324 votes, or 4.8 per cent overall. “I certainly would have liked to have a different final result but I think I’m pretty realistic about the way it went,” he said, noting Delta-Richmond East has traditionally been a Conservative riding. He called his finish respectable and comparable with past outings for the Green Party here. Laird was happy Green leader Elizabeth May won a seat in Saanich-Gulf Islands, becoming the Green’s first elected federal member of Parliament. “That’s major. Any nation that ends up with a Green in, it’s a turning point.” He was encouraged by the party’s B.C. figures — 7.7 per cent of the popu-

lar vote. Laird wasn’t pleased to see the Tories end up with a majority government, however. “I think it’s a dark day

for Canada, actually. I don’t think that the Conservatives have shown themselves to be anything but less than respectful of the Canadian identity and ideals.”

Independent John Shavluk finished with 0.5 per cent of local votes at 220 tallies while Libertarian Jeff Monds garnered 0.3 per cent with 147 votes.

my whole family is voting Conservative, because enough is enough.’” Delta-Richmond East had been considered a relatively safe riding for the Conservatives, but it remained to be seen whether Findlay could match the success of Cummins. In the last election in 2008, which resulted in another Conservative minority government, the incumbent Cummins dominated as usual with almost 56 per cent of the vote. It was obvious Findlay would have big shoes to fill, due in part to the enor-

mous personal popularity of Cummins. In an interview just after he was appointed as the Liberal candidate for Delta-Richmond East, Alan Beesley said he believed the riding was, in fact, winnable because Cummins had stepped aside. However, that turned out not to be the case as Findlay managed to keep almost all of Cummins’ support. On hand to show his support at the Coast Tsawwassen Inn gathering was the outgoing MP, who said he was particularly delighted to see the Bloc

Quebecois crumble. “They were smallminded individuals who were bad for the business of Canada,” Cummins said. Findlay, who’s planning to move to the riding, is a Vancouver lawyer who until now was perhaps best known for spearheading an extended court battle with the federal government and the Musqueam Indian Band over lease payments charged to non-native residents of Musqueam Park. Currently the legal counsel for the B.C. Fisheries Survival Coalition before the Cohen inquiry into

declining salmon stocks, the 55-year-old has held many committee and executive portfolios in her legal career. In 2001, she was received a YWCA Woman of Distinction Award and in 2006 was appointed to the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal for a five-year term. Married to Brent Chapman, an actor and voice talent, Findlay has four kids ages 15 to 29. “This beautiful community has embraced me and I’m going to embrace it,” she said.

The NDP’s Nic Slater received more than 23 per cent of the popular vote.

Voters aren’t keen on going to polls again

A steady stream of voters headed to the polls in South Delta Monday to pick a new member of Parliament for Delta-Richmond East. The feedback was varied as the Optimist asked them for their take on the 41st general election, however, a majority noted they didn’t like the prospect of another minority government. At Hawthorne Elementary in Ladner, Pam Herbert, saying she’s almost 90 and makes sure to vote in every election, said people don’t want to keep going through an election.

Pam Herbert Unnecessary election

Caitlin Baird Education overlooked

“On the other hand, there’s certain people we want and certain people we don’t to get in,” said Herbert. The ballot seemed odd for several voters in that longtime Conservative John Cummins’s name was no longer on it. Cummins retired from federal politics after almost 18 years in Ottawa. Arif Khan said the election shouldn’t have been called but it’s still the responsibility of citizens to vote. Another voter, who didn’t want to give his name, described it all as “a bloody waste of time.” Caitlin Baird was one of the few interviewed who wanted to talk about a particular issue. “It was interesting because I’m a student and they didn’t even want to address education. I thought that was kind of sad that they all neglect the student vote because if they paid more attention to education in their campaigning, then more students would vote,” she said. Julie Lapinsky, who was about to vote with her husband Ron, said she was tired of the Conservatives being in a minority and having to negotiate with the other two national parties. “I hope the Conservatives get a majority because I’m very much what the Conservatives are standing for,” she said. At the Cliff Drive Elementary polling station in Tsawwassen, Karin Zeitler said she was hoping Green Party leader Elizabeth May wins her riding in Saanich-Gulf Islands. May did make history by becoming the first Green to be elected federally. Most of the other voters had similar sentiments to

their Ladner counterparts. One voter said he hoped people wouldn’t be fooled by NDP leader Jack Layton’s apparent surge in popularity, comments echoed by a father-son duo that both said they didn’t agree with New Democrat philosophies. John Girling, a Second World War vet who walked several blocks in his shorts in the rain to vote, quipped, “I guess we have to vote for some donkey.” Girling also said the election wasn’t necessary. “The government was doing very well, the country was doing very well economically. Here they pull stunts like this. There’s no logic here.” Kathy Johnson said she believed Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff lost votes because of his triggering of the election. Athanasa Demostenis said she was disappointed and upset by what’s happening in Ottawa. While most voters queried in Ladner and Tsawwassen said they didn’t want to see a minority or coalition government, a few didn’t think those scenarios would be a bad thing for Canada. Connor Bobroske said he thinks it’s necessary to see how the public feels on a frequent basis. “It’s good because it keeps everyone in tune with what the public is thinking,” he said. Bobroske said he had no opinion one way or the other about the fact the Liberal and Conservative candidates in DeltaRichmond East don’t live in the riding. Liberal candidate Alan Beesley summed it up as one of the most bizarre campaigns he’s ever seen.

the program. Councillors were told by engineering staff the average metered home is still consuming about as much, and thus paying as much, as nonmetered homes. It costs the municipality about $1,000 per home to install a meter. Council agreed to increase the amount of funding for the annual volunteer metering program from $50,000 to $100,000 in order to help clear a backlog of 200 applications. Finance director Karl Pruess said it would cost about $36 million to meter every home in Delta.

Delta council gave final approval this week to a 2.98 per cent property tax increase. According to the finance department, the increase, which only applies to the municipal portion of the tax bill, works out to $55 for an average residential property assessed at $535,000. The other taxing authorities are expected to increase their charges as well. Last year, the average residential property paid $2,415 total property taxes

— $1,811 in Delta taxes and $604 in other levies. Property tax bills will be mailed this month and are due in early July. On a separate front, the average Delta homeowner paid almost $40 more this year on their utility bills thanks to a decision by Metro Vancouver to increase the region’s operating budget for sewer, water and solid waste services. When it comes to Delta’s water rates and the water meter program, meanwhile, several weeks ago council had a discussion openly questioning the benefits of

Carlene Lewall was among 36 British Columbians honoured last week at the eighth annual B.C. Community Achievement Awards. Lieutenant Governor Steven Point and deputy premier Kevin Falcon handed out the awards at Government House in Victoria. “These 36 individuals have helped shape our province into what it is today,” Falcon said. “They have a passion for the people and places where they live and

a strong commitment to making a difference. They inspire us all.” Lewall was recognized for her work with Delta Gymnastics, the realization of the Delta Sport Development Centre, and her contributions to the Delta Sports Hall of Fame and Spirit of Delta committees. “I felt very honoured,” Lewall said, adding she was humbled to receive the award. Lewall got involved with Delta Gymnastics more than 30 years ago and hasn’t slowed down since, championing the club

wherever she can. The club moved into its new home in Ladner last month. She also helped spearhead the Delta Spirit Committee in 2003, shortly after Vancouver was awarded the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. In the years leading up to last year’s Games, the committee worked to boost the spirit in the area, hosting special sendoffs for Delta athletes, parties to celebrate the opening and closing ceremonies for Olympic Games and, as the 2010 Games drew closer, stoking the flames of Olympic spirit here in South Delta.

TED MURPHY

MURPHY’S LAW The signs of another spring are all around us: the evenings are longer, the flowers are in bloom and the Delta school board is making wholesale cuts in the face of a large deficit. In what has become a yearly ritual, trustees spend early spring hacking and slashing at a budget in order to balance the books for Victoria. And every year there is much lamenting over what must be chopped from an already stripped down system in order to reach the target. We’ve heard it all before — how the fat was trimmed long ago and now the cuts are into the bone. It’s become so predictable a sense of complacency or inevitability has snuck into the issue, dulling our resolve to alter it. Trustee Gordon Masi makes a valid point in suggesting it has to be more than just school trustees complaining in order for those concerns to resonate with the decision makers around the cabinet table in Victoria. There’s no doubt that a groundswell of opposition is much more likely to attract the provincial government’s attention than the same old voices singing from that familiar song sheet. I have to seriously wonder that even if senior politicians hear the outcry whether there’s a pot of gold in the capital that would be able to provide the desired infusion to the education system. It’s not like the province doesn’t have its own money troubles. There never seems to be enough for education, just as there is never sufficient funding for our beleaguered health care system. Social services, transportation, public safety ... you can point to pretty much every aspect of government and argue it’s underfunded. It seems to me that calling for more education money means either higher taxes, which few would support, or reallocating existing dollars, which simply shortchanges other areas of government. I’m not sure either of those scenarios is too attractive. Are we not better off demanding a comprehensive review of the education system in this province to see if a different model could deliver services in a more cost-effective manner? Is there an ability to use the existing resources in a more prudent way so the money we already put into the system goes farther? I’m not suggesting this will cure all that ails our education system, but it doesn’t seem like we have a whole lot of alternatives at this point. Either we revisit how we allocate education dollars in the 21st century or trustees keep doing the same painful budget dance every spring.

Lefties get foothold in Canada despite failures all over world DAN SOUTHARD

COMMUNITY COMMENT I learned a few things during the federal election, and one is that we need a lot more emphasis on economic studies in our country. Also, that economics courses should be mandatory for all journalism students. Listening to Jack Layton and, to a slightly lesser extent, Michael Ignatieff during the election reminded me of a burger stand operator who thinks if he starts charging $100 each for hamburgers he’ll soon be rich. Ridiculous, yet many people, including some in the media, jumped on board, completely oblivious to the fact Layton and Ignatieff policies would sentence us to a long, unpleasant voyage on the SS Unintended Consequences. For the poor and the middle class, it would be like having a steerage ticket on the Titanic — trapped on a sinking ship, while

many of those with means escape to safety. So, how is it at a time when we’ve seen socialism fail all over the world can such policies continue to gain support in Canada? Well, give credit where credit is due. The “left” in Canada is a strategically brilliant group of people. They’ve taken over our universities — particularly the political science departments — and run our public school system. Argue if you want, but, from what I see, the teachers’ union, not our elected officials, runs our public school system. Lefties control our government bureaucracies, and are abundantly represented in the field of journalism. They have skilfully managed to use these positions of influence to push the boundary between the left and right so far in this country that by our current standard JFK would be considered a neo-con. Left-wingers have also successfully established a Canadian orthodoxy that all must follow, or be deemed “mean spirited” or “ignorant.” Part of the orthodoxy is based on the belief the only difference between the rich and the poor is luck. The truth is, this country is

bursting at the seams with opportunity, and the real difference between the rich and poor is the ability and willingness to recognize and seize these opportunities. Poverty is most often the result of poor life choices, and the only realistic way to even come close to eradicating poverty is to change people’s mindset. Rather than instilling young people with the idea they are automatically deserving of a high standard of living, we should be shifting the emphasis to teaching them about the importance of the choices they make in life. High school should include mandatory assemblies featuring lectures from prominent entrepreneurs, financial planners and business leaders. We need to get young people excited about the opportunities that lie ahead of them, and instil them with the knowledge that success will come from their own efforts. That last line is important, because if we continue down the socialist road it won’t be too long before there isn’t enough money left in the government coffers to take care of those who haven’t armed themselves with the skills necessary to take care of themselves.

Lease extension will allow Alpha to attract industrial tenants to airport has invested over $24 million in airport facilities, which is well in excess of the mandatory requirement of $11 million. Boundary Bay, as in the case of most regional airports, operates at an annual deficit. The current state of the aviation industry precludes expansion or re-location of aviation tenants to Boundary Bay. Delta, in close partnership with the airport, has recognized this fact and has been very proactive in providing a means to attract industrial tenants to support the airport. The airport is also competing for tenants against other land lease sites that are offering 99year leases. Major industrial tenants are reluctant to commit to land leases, particularly if terms are less than 40 years. There has already been considerable interest expressed

by prospective industrial tenants based on the lease extension. Alpha Aviation’s significant investment in Boundary Bay Airport is only due to the vision and passion for aviation of its chairman, Fred Kaiser. To date, and for the foreseeable future, little provincial or federal funding is forthcoming to support the continued capital required to maintain the airport. A further $26 million is needed to meet Transport Canada standards in the future. Without additional and supplementary revenue generated from industrial tenants, the ongoing funding required to maintain the airport would become critically inadequate. Attracting an increased industrial base at the airport generates significant tax revenue for Delta. With the addition of major ten-

ants such as Heli-One and B.C. Fresh, tax revenue has increased from $140,000 in 2004, when Alpha Aviation began operating Boundary Bay, to over $1 million in 2011. Alpha has not made, nor ever expects to make, any positive returns from its investment at Boundary Bay Airport. Very importantly, we take to heart any unfounded criticism and allegations made about its conduct that is not consistent with our corporate value of community responsibility and, in this instance, the future viability of Boundary Bay Airport for the community of Delta. The Corporation of Delta has been exemplary in partnering with Alpha to make Boundary Bay a world-class facility. Greg Fong General Manager Alpha Aviation Inc.

Civic officials must find animal shelter new home due to disruption caused by highway construction unteers and inhabitants are enduring. I hadn’t realized this area was under heavy construction for the South Fraser Perimeter Road, which is almost on top of them. I saw a small group of adults working with two or three dogs on leashes. It appeared some kind of behavioural or socialization work was being attempted with the trucks and bulldozers all around them.

What really broke my heart, however, was the sight of an older couple, volunteer dog walkers, collecting a very lovable and excited black and tan dog to take him for a walk. His beloved squeaky toy firmly clenched in his mouth and his tail beating fast and furiously, off they trudged into the mud and sand and dug up roadway, past the traffic control flaggers and, yes, the endless trucks and

tractors. The volunteers and staff are to be commended most highly for their determination to provide some comfort to the homeless inhabitants amongst such a din and so much chaos. I would like to know what Delta intends to do about the location of this facility as it is apparent that where it is now leaves much to be desired. Donna McKay

Editor: Re: Delta extends airport lease until 2099, April 27 Alpha Aviation, operator of the Boundary Bay Airport, wishes to express its concern with respect to some misunderstandings raised in the article. First, in reference to the process for the lease extension, an identical process was followed to the previous extension. In fact, the current extension required lengthy discussions to ensure the Corporation of Delta’s interest was preserved. There are built-in provisions in the lease for scheduled review of lease terms. It is also interesting to note that Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington was on the Delta council that approved the previous extension under the identical process. To date, Alpha Aviation

Third title in summer’s annual outdoor movie night series to be decided by online voting over next three weeks

The Business Improvement Association of Tsawwassen’s popular Pick the Flick contest is back. The BIA is organizing the fourth annual Tsawwassen Outdoor Movie Nights this summer and it needs the community’s help in choosing the film to be

sponsors Randy’s Excel Tire and Auto Service and Tsawwassen Collision chose Jurassic Park. “This movie is a classic and even though it has some scary parts the sun sets very late that day — past 10 p.m. — so the majority of the little ones

Family mourns loss of a four-legged friend BARBARA GUNN

LIVING MATTERS We didn’t adopt Abby. Abby adopted us. It was going on 12 years ago. We visited the local SPCA in search of a cat, or maybe two. In one cage, half a dozen kittens — siblings, no doubt — were waiting for a home. We watched them.

Five of them were curled up, snoozing. One, a tiny grey cat with white paws and bright eyes and a quiet meow, looked at us and pushed a paw between the bars. We promptly took her home. Her full name — so decided by the golfer son in the family — was Glen Abbey Golf Course. It was cumbersome, to say the least, so we opted for Abby. Many people will say their cats are almost human, but Abby truly was. She

knew her name. She came when you called her. She looked at you when you spoke to her, and knew exactly what you were saying. Like people, she preferred roast beef to kibble. She was crazy about cheese. And ham. And patches of carpet warmed by the sun. And me. Whenever I laid down for a nap — as I often do — she would appear out of nowhere and settle down on my middle or near to my

face. Cats are not known for giving people hugs, but Abby really was. She knew, in a way that cats seldom know, when a day was not your best, and when you needed a warm and cuddly friend. She accompanied the sons as they moved from adolescence into adulthood, curled up on their beds when they were doing homework or talking to girlfriends on the phone. She was the best company, and the best listener, a teenager could possibly want.

The 12th annual student art show is titled Wild and SDSS teacher Julie Lymburner says she’s very pleased with the results. “They’ve really worked hard to put their heart and soul into these works.” Senior drawing and painting students went in many directions with the theme and used various media for their pieces, from “pencil and charcoal right through to all different kinds of paint and mixed media.” Lymburner says, as in previous years, students

Karen Marchand thinks Betty White (right) would be best suited to play her mom, Agnes Chadwick (left). ing and had a heart of gold, always giving, giving, giving. Whether it was a homemade card, some roses or vegetables from her garden, fresh baked pies or cookies, embroidery, jelly or jams, she always had something for you. If there were ever a person to portray my mother it would be Betty White. She is of similar age and stature, has those lovely sparkling blue eyes and engaging looks. My mother and White dress similarly as they have the same body type. She has the same mischievous laughter in her eyes, and you get the impression she is going to pull a prank on

you if you’re not on your toes. White always flirted with the men in the Golden Girls, and had a quick wit, but also had this funny innocence about her that my mom shared. As a comedian, White would dress up in crazy outfits just like our mother did. At 89, she has youthful energy, a big heart for family, community and the well being and protection of animals, and is an inspiration to so many.

Submitted by: Karen Marchand Mom: Agnes Chadwick My mother was a beautiful, youthful woman with flaming red hair, smiling blue eyes and dimpled cheeks. She’d be 80 this year if she were still alive. Her face lit up a room when she entered, her laughter was contagious and she always acknowledged each and everyone to ensure they felt welcome. My mom had feathers, furs and her jewels, and outfits for every occasion. She was as thrifty as they came, but you couldn’t tell by the ensembles she always put together. She always dressed fit for a queen. She loved to entertain, dress up in crazy costumes and get people participating in whatever shenanigans or pranks she’d dream up. She did lots of crazy and silly things to make her friends howl, and was never selfconscious about it either. She loved to go out dancing and would flirt with all, young and old, which kept them laughing and feeling good about themselves. She had endless energy and would out-dance any young whippersnappers. She was kind and car-

Submitted by: Dany Loyer Mom: Terri Martens The actress I would want to play my mother, in a movie about her life, would be Sally Field. It’s not that they look much alike, or that Field’s roles have been much like my mother’s life, but it’s more about a feeling I get whenever I see her. The first time I saw Sally Field, playing Norma Rae, I thought she was so cute and spunky. She’s petite, like my mom, with similar colouring, hair and eyes. My mom is much quieter. She’s very introspective. Yet there’s just something about the two of them that’s so complementary. They are just eight months apart, perhaps that’s why I find her so suited to play my mother. When I see Field on TV, she gives off such warmth. She’s always smiling, never pretentious. She volunteers her time with non-profit work for women’s rights. During her acceptance speech at the 2007 Emmy Awards, she made an anti-war statement:

Sally Field (right) has been tagged to play Terri Martens (above). “If the mothers ruled the world, there would be no (expletive deleted) wars in the first place!” I feel my mother shares much of the same love of charity and volunteers her own time to help others. It would be wonderful to see my own mother on the big screen. However, since

she’s probably too shy for that much attention, I think Field would be a great substitute to share my mom’s story with the world. I love you, mom.

May 4, 2011 The Delta Optimist A19 Mother’s Day

Cast Roberts in role

Submitted by: Dave Hamilton Mom: Marguerite Hamilton I was quite young when my mother died but the memories I have of our short life together are very strong. My mom loved her children — there are four of us — dearly and was a great wife to my dad. I recall her being able to be soft and loving yet strong and caring. She could laugh or cry with me, help me be brave taking my first step and then cuddle me when I fell. The tender moments together are the ones I remember most, whether it was playing on a farm in Alberta as we visited

friends, sitting on her lap on the train coming to B.C. or on the couch in the living room as she read to me, or I to her. To me, my mom was a woman that could be the most fun one minute and the most caring the next. I will always treasure the time we spent together and wish we could have had an opportunity to make more memories. If there were a movie made about my mom, I would like Julia Roberts to play the leading lady. I see a lot of parallels in the movie characters she has played. Whether it is the Pygmalion-style Pretty Woman, a young bride with diabetes in Steel Magnolias or the strong

Erin Brockovich taking on the big gas and electric company, the characteristics of a strong, loving and caring woman runs through them all. And in her personal life Roberts has shown her caring side by working with a variety of organizations, including UNICEF to aid in Haiti and a documentary about a neurodevelopment disorder called Rett syndrome. She has taken the opportunity to use her name and wealth to try and make the world a better place. Both my mom and Roberts, in character and real life, show they care about the people and the world around them as much as they do about themselves.

Mother’s Day for many is an occasion marked by lovely bouquets of fresh cut flowers, special dinners and little crayon drawings of stick figures showing mommy, daddy, Rufus the doggie and Mittens the kitty cat. For some it is serving mom breakfast in bed, doing all of the house work or treating her to a manicure or foot massage. It is an occasion often preceded by a trip to the local card shop in search of that one card that so eloquently captures those words that for one reason

or another we did not find time to say. Yes, Mother’s Day will be spent honouring mom with expressions of love for indeed this is her spe-

cial day. Sadly for others it will be a time spent in quiet reflection recalling fond memories as one goes through the photo album or visits mom’s final resting place. It has been years since

my mother passed away but I shall never forget the love she had for me and my brothers and the many sacrifices she made. One can never tell mom too often how much she is loved. I’m reminded of my last and final farewell that I dedicated to her after her passing. It came in the way of a poem that I find I read each Mother’s Day. Let’s always remember to treasure the special gift that we have been blessed with — a mother’s love — and to express our thoughts not just on Mother’s Day, but always.

Mother’s Day

Tradition evolves beyond original intent advocated by mothers. She called it “Mother’s Work Day.” Fifteen years later, Julia Ward Howe, a Boston poet, pacifist, suffragist and author of the lyrics to the “Battle Hymn of the Republic,” organized a day encouraging mothers to rally for peace, since she believed they bore the loss of human life more harshly than anyone else. In 1905 when Anna Jarvis died, her daughter, also named Anna, began a campaign to memorialize the life work of her mother. Anna began to lobby prominent businessmen and politicians to support her campaign to create a special day to honour mothers. At one of the first services organized to celebrate Anna’s mother in 1908, at her church in West Virginia, Anna handed out her mother’s favourite flower, the

white carnation. Five years later, the House of Representatives adopted a resolution calling for officials of the federal government to wear white carnations on Mother’s Day. In 1914, Anna’s hard work paid off when Woodrow Wilson signed a bill recognizing Mother’s Day as a national holiday. At first, people observed Mother’s Day by attending church, writing letters to their mothers and, eventually, by sending cards, presents and flowers. With the increasing gift-giving activity, Anna Jarvis became enraged. She believed the day’s sentiment was being sacrificed at the expense of greed and profit. In 1923 she filed a lawsuit to stop a Mother’s Day festival. Before her death in 1948, Jarvis is said to have confessed that she regretted ever starting the tradition.

Contrary to popular belief, Mother’s Day was not conceived and finetuned in the boardroom of Hallmark. The earliest tributes to mothers date back to the annual spring festival the Greeks dedicated to Rhea, the mother of many deities, and to the offerings ancient Romans made to their Great Mother of Gods, Cybele. Christians celebrated this festival on the fourth Sunday in Lent in honor of Mary, mother of Christ. In England, this holiday was expanded to include all mothers and was called Mothering Sunday. In the United States, Mother’s Day started nearly 150 years ago when Anna Jarvis, an Appalachian homemaker, organized a day to raise awareness of poor health conditions in her community, a cause she believed would be best

Local realtors riding to conquer cancer Group holding fundraiser on Saturday at Rose and Crown as it prepares for 250-kilometre journey next month A number of local realtors taking part in the annual Ride to Conquer Cancer are holding a fundraiser this Saturday in Tsawwassen. The event, which will be held at the Rose and Crown Pub, will have a raffle, a 50/50 draw and a lottery board. “We’ve got great prizes donated by local businesses,” said Kathy Dickinson, one of the realtors who’ll be doing the ride. Riders also include Val Sundahl, Bridget Ross, Don Ross, Benjamin Lim, Izabela Wasiela, Merilee McCaffery, Tanya Deutsch and Richard Lowe. Most are South Delta realtors. Each participant must

raise $2,500 to take part. Most of the realtors, except for Lowe, will be going on the ride for the first time. “A lot of us didn’t even own a bike before we started this, but we’re all in training,” said Dickinson. She said while it’ll be a challenge to do the bike ride, those who are fighting cancer face a much greater challenge. On June 18 and 19 participants will ride over 250 kilometres from Vancouver to Seattle to raise money for the B.C. Cancer Foundation. The local fundraiser will be held at the pub from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.

The Evergreen Garden Club is getting ready for a pair of plant sales. Some “amazing plants” will be available, says club

member Michelle Wilson. “They’re really cared for. We have a lot of master gardeners in our club. They know how to propagate,” she says. “Our plants are of top quality.” Plants like brunnera,

ferns, daylilies, hydrangea, purple-leaved penstemons, geraniums and ornamental grasses will be for sale. Wilson notes the event, which has been running for about 40 years, attracts repeat customers.

“We have people coming from Vancouver every year. Other garden clubs come because they just know what good quality plants we have.” Prices are reasonable and usually start at $2, she says.

Overtime heartbreak for U15 Tsa Thunder

Girls soccer team trimmed by Surrey in Coastal Cup final BY

MARK BOOTH

mbooth@delta-optimist.com

The game unfolded exactly how the Tsawwassen Thunder anticipated except for the end result. The U15 Metro girls soccer team generated enough scoring chances but failed to find the back of the net in a heartbreaking 10 overtime loss to the Surrey F.C. Revolution in the Coastal “A” Cup final played on Sunday in Richmond. Their league rival carried much of the territorial play between the penalty areas thanks to a midfield dominated with provincial team members. That was fine with the Thunder which held an edge up front with their game breaking speed. Sure enough, Tsawwassen got behind the Revolution backline three times in the opening half yet couldn’t capitalize on the glorious chances. Two other opportunities, in the late stages of the second half proved to be nothing more than close calls, setting the stage for 20 minutes of extra time. Surrey, which also had its share of close calls, finally broke the deadlock in the first overtime period when a cleared corner kick was eventually crossed back into the penalty area and headed past a helpless Rachel Sydor in goal. A reflection of just what might have been for Tsawwassen was speedy striker Seina Kahima earning her team’s MVP honours for being a threat throughout the match, only to have nothing to show for her tireless runs. “We probably had six ‘A’ quality scor-

ing chances which we just didn’t do a good enough job of pushing into the corners (of the net),” said Tsawwassen coach Jeff Derksen. “These are quality kids and just an amazing group of girls to coach. They were in tears when it was over. “They were definitely the better team in midfield which forced us to do a lot of chasing but we also knew their backs would be easy to penetrate. They’re a great team that seemed to have some extra energy in overtime.” Derksen suggests co-coach Bob Birada’s presence might have made a difference. The former national U20 coach was unavailable. “It was so unfortunate as the girls are like sheep anytime Bob has something to say to them,” added Derksen. “He probably would have figured out a way to tighten up our midfield. The Thunder’s season is far from over with the girls enjoying a few weeks off before heading to tournaments in Kamloops and Bellingham. The team then leaves for Europe in July for a tournament in Spain and to watch the Women’s World Cup in Germany. Fifteen members will be playing for South Fraser in the new B.C. Premier Soccer League next fall. The Thunder’s roster also includes: Alessia Azermadhi, Avneet Bhullar, Amy Davidson, Danae Derksen, Kathleen Jackson, Emma Kallner, Nadia Langenberg, Emma Leese, Emily Lieuwen, Emma Partridge, Jenna Phipps, Olivia Priestlay, Kiertsen Sawchuk, Aleisha Seggie and Casandra Silveri.

Tsawwassen Thunder’s Seina Kahima looks to get past a Surrey FC defender during Sunday’s U15 Coastal “A” Cup final in Richmond. Tsawwassen was edged 1-0 in overtime.

Ladner Celtic edged in penalty kicks in U13 Coastal final at the Richmond Thanksgiving Tournament, the locals’ luck ran out to conclude a great season. Langley United edged Ladner 2-1 after converting all five of their attempts to end an afternoon of drama. Three previous wins had resulted in Celtic becoming the first-ever team from the Ladner Boys Soccer Club to advance to a Coastal “A” Cup championship game. The locals looked to be in tough against an opponent that was perfect on the season (19-0-0) in league and cup action, including a 6-0 victory over North Vancouver

in the Coastal semi-finals two weeks earlier. Langley carried the play in the early going and managed to open the scoring. Despite a knee injury to key forward Josh Murphy, Ladner showed its resiliency by fighting back to draw even when Jeremy Gill got on the end of a free kick 10-minutes later. United’s pace up front made them a threat for the reminder of the game, however, Ladner met the challenge and then some, creating some quality chances of its own. Spencer Richardson, who earned game MVP honours for his work

in midfield, made a dangerous run that easily could have resulted in a penalty kick. Kyle Booth then forced the Langley goalkeeper to make the save of the match with a finger tip stop on a free kick from 30-yards out. Ladner also had another great chance, in the late stages of the second overtime period, before the teams headed to the shootout. Ladner coaches Mark Booth, Ted Murphy and Tony Corea couldn’t have been more proud of their players’ performance. The team received solid goalkeeping from Kaylin Kaila and

excellent defending from Michael Wiechers, Joven Gill, Marc Ashford and team captain Devin Basi. Working tirelessly in midfield and up front were Jake Richards, Brayden Kirk, Logan Newman, Matteo Corea and Brenn Traher. Missing for the final was Nicholas Wicks. Celtic finished the season having lost just four times in 32 games (23-4-5). One of those other setbacks also came against Langley in the Conference Cup final back in March, a 2-1 overtime result.

They may be a team of 12and-13-year-olds but the Ladner Celtic are grizzled veterans when it comes to penalty kicks. For the fourth time this season, the U13 Gold boys squad went to the gut wrenching tiebreaker to determine a winner and this time it came on the province’s biggest stage for youth soccer — the Coastal “A” Cup final last Saturday in Richmond. After a pair of penalty kicks triumphs helped earned them a tournament win in Oregon last August, then again two months later in the championship game

Ladner Athletics U18 girls soccer team capped a terrific run with a silver medal finish at last month’s Coastal Classic Cup finals in Coquitlam.

Youth soccer journey ends with cup final berth for U18 Athletics It is with a great deal of pride and more than a touch of sadness that the Ladner Athletics girls soccer team played its last game recently in the U18 Bronze Coastal Classic Cup finals in Coquitlam. In typical fashion, the girls played with great determination, losing in overtime by the smallest of margins. Never the most skilled team, the Athletics always showed their best in the big games and often overcame more talented opposition. The girls have been largely together since U13 and it took nine games into

their inaugural season to win a match. Since then the team has steadily grown and finished its last season in style with a Cinderella run to the cup final, eliminating three of the four top teams en route. The Athletics also finished as the reigning Kelowna Canada Day Tournament champions. In typical fashion, the girls defeated higher tiered opposition from Alberta to win the tournament. The coaches would like to thank the players for all the entertainment, the parents for their unwavering support and friendship over

the years. Lastly, the executive of Ladner Girls Soccer Club for making it all possible. The team consists of Olivia Athaide, Krista Blachford, Nicole Block, Meghan Chesshire, Avril Easton, Camille Garvey, Carling Hare, Whitney Humphry, Jasleen Hundal, Hailey Kuckein, Breanne Lewis, Alyson MacLaren, Chloe Parker, Kaisha Pearson, Keara Reade, Katie Riley, Alysha Teja, Angela Tramontin, Sami Wessel. The coaches are Elsie Cheng, Nick Chesshire and Andrew MacLaren.
