This could turn out to be a memorable year for ballerina Melissa Johnston. She’s one of the 15 acts going to the finals of the Langley Has Talent contest April 30. And she also has a chance to go to an elite dance program with the Boston Ballet starting this summer. The stumbling block for this dancer would be the cost of her art. She’s looking at sponsorship and fundraising ideas so she can continue to fund her dance training. “I’m so very thrilled and excited but sadly if I cannot One of these performers will be named the winner of find some sort of financial help the first Langley Has Talent to get there it contest. just won’t be • Kaitlan Allinger, singer pop possible,” she • Bop til You Drop, tap dance explained. group Peter Luongo, • Britt Bonshor, country/pop who chairs • Regan Clicetto, contemp. dancer the organizing • The Colours, rock band committee, said • Cory Risling Band, country the semifinals • Tiffany Desrosiers, singer pop were sold out, • Robyn and Ryleigh Gillespie, with 650 people pop/country attending. • Cassidy Hoflin, country “It was abso• Melissa Johnston, ballerina lutely outstand• Ron May, country/folk ing,” he said of • Ashley Park, singer soul the talent. • Lauren Tokiwa, jazz dancer The finals will • Sarah Tummon, singer/musician feature an array • Justin Vanloo, singer pop of “really good acts.” “Regardless of age, they are all really talented,” he noted. voting to determine which of the 29 acts moved on to the finals. Luongo said the combined voting worked out well (votes were counted three times) and the audience was generally in sync with the judges but there were some acts that got through thanks to audience support. “It was obvious that in at least a couple of cases, the voters chose,” he said. Fifteen of those acts have a chance to shine again on April 30. The show, in the Christian Life Assembly church, starts at 6:30 p.m. Langley City Mayor Peter Fassbender and talent agency owner Lisa Lloyd will be judges. Organizers are still lining up a third judge from the entertainment industry. The performance lineup will be decided by organizers but there are some special attractions.

Aaron Pritchett, to show his support for a performing arts venue, will perform. The organizers are also looking at having a comic. The event is the work of the four Rotary clubs of Langley and is intended to create awareness of the need for a dedicated performing arts venue here as well as helping to fundraise for such a facility. Tickets are available online (www.langleyhastalent.com) for $20 each. Luongo said there were about 95 semifinal tickets sold at the door before Saturday’s show and any extra will be sold at the door for the finals but people may not want to take the chance. The grand prize winner receives $2,500 in cash as well as performance-related prizes such as eight hours with Blue Frog recording studio and a 30-minute studio and video package from Shaw TV.

Arbour Day takes root Residents helped plant trees by the Nicomekl.

by Matthew Claxton mclaxton@langleyadvance.com

The leafy foliage that makes our oxygen was celebrated at Sunday’s Arbour Day events in Langley Township. The events began at 1 p.m. at the Derek Doubleday Arboretum, a strip of land that runs along the Nicomekl River between 56th Avenue and Fraser Highway, to the west of the Langley Regional Airport. Trees were planted to honour a number of Langley pioneers, volunteers, and firefighters who have died over the past year. Two names were added to the list of those being honoured in the last few weeks. George Antone, a Kwantlen elder found murdered in his home in early March, and Bunty Clements, who was honoured alongside her husband George as a co-founder of the Fur Bearer Defenders group. After family members and friends of those being honoured were asked to help plant the trees, there were more seedlings planted along the riverbank. Children and adults got a chance to take a look at the park from atop a crane, and a plant sale was held to raise money for local parks.

Hydro goes after power thieves BC Hydro is going after pot-growing power thieves through lawsuits. by Gerry Bellett Postmedia Network Inc.

BC Hydro is pursuing 19 civil claims through the courts to recover about $2.1 million in diverted power, electricity the utility says was stolen in large part by illegal marijuana-grow-

ing operations, including a major one in Langley. In the past three years, Hydro has launched 24 such civil suits, said Hydro official Simi Heer, recovering about $5 million from persons who have stolen electricity. Heer said the money has been recovered through either litigation or from out-of-court settlements. In all cases, the thefts were associated with illegal marijuana-growing operations, she

said. Last year in Langley, the RCMP raided a marijuana-growing operation they believe had been in business for four years. Officers allegedly found three stolen Hydro meters, equipment, and 35 pounds of packaged marijuana. BC Hydro estimated it had lost $171,000 from power theft during that time and sued the three persons associated with the property for the money.

Students in a special education class at Langley Secondary are getting a second, cruel education in crime this week. For the second time in five months, thieves have stolen every computer from their classroom. Teacher Gurpreet Mahill was upset and frustrated Monday, after learning that thieves apparently made off with the computers Friday night. Someone broke a window at the school, and then cut through the metal anti-theft cables that tied down the computers, along with a television set. The students in the class are in need of extra help. “There’s a variety of different needs in the classroom,” Mahill said. Some of the students have physical disabilities, others are autistic. The computers were used by some of the non-verbal autistic students. The young men and women, from Grades 9 to 12, could also use them for researching current events, or for games during breaks. The stolen computers were purchased by Langley’s London Drugs, as replacements for the first set which were stolen just before Christmas. Now Mahill said with the district cash-strapped, it isn’t certain these new ones can be replaced without more help from the community. “We’ll have to look at our budget,” Mahill said. The computers were insured, but the deductible is a factor in the cost of replacing them. Having computers stolen twice in such a short time is very frustrating for Mahill. “I would like some justice,” he said, hoping the thieves can be caught and the computers recovered.

Four of Langley’s five candidates for a seat in Parliament kicked off one of the busiest weeks of the local campaign in the Langley Library Monday morning. About a dozen potential voters turned out to meet their candidates, pick up pamphlets, and have a cup of coffee. Pam and Doug Smith were among those who came. The couple doesn’t want to vote for the Conservatives, but are still weighing their options between the Liberals, NDP, and Greens. “It’s actually very nice,” Pam said. “You get more a feel for who they are, and you don’t just hear the usual rhetoric.” Present at the meet -and-greet were incumbent Conservative Mark Warawa, Green candidate Carey Poitras, Rebecca Darnell of the Liberals, and Piotr Majkowski of the NDP.

“People want our politicians in Ottawa to behave,” Darnell said. She also said that while door knocking, she is hearing that few people have any fear of a coalition government. Warawa said he’s hearing the exact opposite – that a coalition is not wanted and that a Harper majority is what voters want. “I wish we weren’t in a campaign,” Warawa said. But since it’s here, he’s meeting as many people as possible. “We’re seeing an amazing campaign, bigger than anything in Langley NDP history,” Majkowski said. He’s focussed on talking to people who haven’t voted in the past. Poitras said she’s focussed on getting out the message that the Green’s aren’t a one issue party. Tonight, (Tuesday) the four, along with Craig Nobbs of the Pirate Party, will take questions at the Greater Langley Chamber of Commerce dinner. On Wednesday, they’ll face off in a full debate at the Kwantlen Polytechnic campus on the Langley Bypass, starting at 6:30 p.m. The debate is free to attend.

“Thus the proposed tower could provide antenna facilities for several different wireless carriers wishing to service the local area,” the Scott proposal said. The issue came before City council at its April 18 evening council meeting. The company sent 16 information packages to neighbouring properties within a radius of six times the tower’s height as part of the approval process. Two responses – one objecting to the tower and one requesting more technical information – were received. This is the City’s first application since it amended its Telecommunications Antenna policy to recognize the need for future increased need for more capacity and the need to secure space for municipal telecommunications.

Wild driver caught

Police say they arrested a man suspected of waving a knife during a road-rage incident.

Police had help in a recent crackdown on unsafe drivers, particularly truck drivers.

by Matthew Claxton

mclaxton@langleyadvance.com

A 20-year-old Langley man is charged with several crimes after an eventful afternoon that police say involved a knife, and some wild driving. At about 5 p.m., a man called the RCMP to report that he had been threatened at a gas station at 72nd Avenue and 200th Street. The caller had been walking through the parking lot when he was almost run over by a U-Haul truck, said Cpl. Holly Marks of the Langley RCMP. The driver of the truck hopped out, threatened the pedestrian with a knife, and then got back in his vehicle, according to the report. The driver went into the convenience store briefly before driving off again. The pedestrian gave police a Cpl. Holly Marks licence plate and a description of Langley RCMP the driver. A short time later, police heard about a U-Haul being driven erratically on 96th Avenue. The truck was moving at high speeds, and was veering into the oncoming lane or over curbs. The truck headed into Fort Langley, and then south along Glover Road. Police caught up with the vehicle after it turned onto Rawlison Crescent, Marks said. An officer pulled up after the truck was forced to stop when a train crossed the road, blocking traffic. The driver and a woman in the truck were both arrested, and a knife was found inside. Marks said the suspect is under court-ordered conditions not to possess weapons. Jordan Bourget, a 20-year-old Langley man, has been charged with assault with a weapon, uttering threats, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, and breach of undertaking. He was held in court until a Monday morning court appearance.

Farmer and volunteer Jack Froese is running for mayor of Langley Township this fall.

Retired cop seeks mayor’s chair …continued from page A1

A former Vancouver police officer, Froese headed up security for the BC Summer Games in Langley last year, a role which several people, including the mayor, asked him to take on. He is the owner of JD Farms, a turkey farm with its own bistro in the North Otter area. On Friday, Froese was calling Township councillors and others to let them know he’s running. He has ruled out forming a slate. “I’m going to work with everybody,” he said. Green, who announced some time ago that he plans to run again, said he welcomed Froese into the race.

"(, '0629 %+ 10-* 5'0531%0'& 10-* 9+# %+ &6.0%9)

“I look forward to it. I’m quite excited, actually,” the mayor said. While Froese said issues of conflict are a driving force behind him running, he doesn’t plan to dig up any issues from the past. If council and the community have decided, there’s no need to re-open things, he said. This is the first time Froese has run for elected office. His previous electoral experience is limited to helping Councillor Bev Dornan’s campaign in 2008. He’s currently putting together his own election team The next municipal election will take place this November.

Langley Mounties teamed up with commercial vehicle inspectors and WorkSafe BC for a four-day crackdown on unsafe drivers last month. Cpl. Holly Marks said the blitz, which ran from March 28 to 31, handed out 1,038 tickets. The Langley RCMP traffic services section was working with the Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement (CSVE) agency, and with WorkSafe. The CSVE officers checked 224 trucks, while the RCMP officers were on the lookout for everything from distracted driving to those driving without a seatbelt. A total of 79 commercial vehicles were removed from service due to deficiencies, Marks said. Tickets and warnings were handed out for 172 seatbelt infractions, 77 drivers licencerelated issues, 17 distracted driving incidents due to cell phones, and one driver was given a 24-hour roadside suspension due to drug use. Many of the drivers were in cars, as the police were pulling over both cars and trucks.

Prospective owners Roy and John Henderson are waiting for word from the B.C. Hockey League, to see if their bid to buy the Langley Chiefs is successful. When, or if, the purchase agreement is finalized, the Hendersons will be the latest in an increasingly long line of owners who have tried to make junior A hockey a success in this community. Langley is undeniably a hockey town. On a typical weekend day, the community’s five rinks are usually filled with minor hockey players and their parents, and adult recreational players. Head to your favourite local watering hole this afternoon, or, if the Chicago Blackhawks survive to play a fifth game, on Thursday night, and they’ll more than likely be teeming with rabid Vancouver Canucks fans, dressed in blue and white, cheering their beloved ’Nucks on as they try to eliminate the defending Stanley Cup champions from the opening round of the National Hockey League playoffs. On April 28, 2006, former Mayor Kurt Alberts and the Chiefs Ownership Group of Moray Keith, Jim Bond, Harvey Smyl and Heinz Hasselmann signed a lease that provided a home for one of the most successful – and storied – franchises in BCHL history. And, over five seasons, the task of garnering a passing interest in junior hockey was a monumental challenge for the Chiefs management and players. Even moving to the new Langley Events Centre, which the Chiefs have called home for the past two years, has failed to yield big crowds. While the Chiefs led the BCHL’s Coastal Conference in attendance – with an average of 1,563 fans per game during their 35 home contests this past season – the events centre seats a capacity of more than 5,000. That’s a whole lot of empty blue seats disguised as fans. Here’s hoping the coming season ushers in a new era of interest for Langley’s team. – T.L.

Margaret Mead said so eloquently, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful citizens could change the world. Indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” I hope that, in the upcoming days before the federal election, there are many thoughtful and engaged conversations occurring around each and every Langley dinner table, that we are reminded of what a privilege it is to have the right to vote, and that we exercise it. Transit authority has run its course Dear Editor, The root of many of our transportation woes (bridge tolls, lack of buses, lack of service, congestion, cost increases) in the Lower Mainland, particularly South of the Fraser River, seems to lie in the transfer of transit

Stoplight overkill at 24th

Dear Editor, Every morning, I go down 264th Street, and have been doing so for a number of years. No disrespect to the Vandergaags [Scary intersection close to deadly, April 15 Letters, Langley Advance], but I have never, ever seen a vehicle pass on the left side at any intersections on 264th Street – they are more likely to pass on the curb side. The intersection at 24th Avenue has had its issues in the past, but to put in a stoplight would be overkill. Perhaps a more palatable option would be a flashing yellow light. And as an aside, solid double yellow lines mean nothing to anyone anymore. I see it every morning on 16th Avenue. Debbie Atkinson, Aldergrove

Rail crossings hazardous

Dear Editor, I agree with Win Bromley [Rail crossing wrecking cars, April 15 Letters, Langley Advance] about wrecking the suspension in our cars on the rail crossing at Langley Bypass just west of Glover Road. And what makes it more annoying is that there is a beautiful crossing just west of Cloverdale, where you hardly know you have crossed a crossing. Both the crossings just west of Glover Road and on Mufford Crescent are a disgrace, and I can’t help but think that the powers that be are leaving them that way on purpose. Think about it. official name). In all other parts of our fair province, BC Transit still operates the bus systems, while various municipalities and the provincial Ministry of Transportation (and Infrastructure, as it is called nowadays) are responsible for the roads and some other ancillary functions. Transferring the responsibility of public functions like regional transit, cycling, and commuter options, AirCare, Intelligent Transportation System programs, the major road network, and regional cycling – shortly, being “responsible for the planning, financing and managing of all public transit in addition to major regional roads and bridges” might have been seen as ultimately a good idea (in the socialist mindset of the provincial government of the day), when it was conceived. But, I believe it is no longer a workable model. The reasons for this are not only the amount of growth during 15 years, but also what I would call an internal conflict of interest between these various functions, and because certain areas within the GVRD have different needs. These are just incompatible. Jacob de Raadt, Langley [Note: A fuller version of this letter is online at www. langleyadvance.com.]

Party leaders blow smoke on crime

Dear Editor, It seems like I have been writing letters about this forever, and it’s getting worse. There have been some horrific murders committed lately, followed by complete miscarriages of justice. Where did all this start? Where did we get on this slippery slope? It started with Pierre Elliot Trudeau. He was the one who said that we would no longer punish criminals, but would rehabilitate them. Well, guess what. It ain’t working! We are seeing the results of the man’s decisions in successive Liberal governments all the way down.

TODAY’S FLYERS... in the Call 604-534-8641 for delivery info.

Now we have Michael Ignatieff and Jack Layton talking tough talk on crime, when they have opposed Stephen Harper’s attempts to actually do something about it, and opposed him viciously. That’s why I believe it is just talk. When it comes to actually do something about it, they are just “blowing smoke.” Actions speak louder than words. If we want things to actually change, we have to elect a Conservative majority. If we do not we’ll hear the glug, glug, glug of this nation going down the toilet – or at least a stalemate, where nothing gets done. David J. Standcumbe, Walnut Grove

Christ’s journey to the Cross will be remembered in Fort Langley Good Friday morning. Stations of the Cross is an outdoor service coordinated by the Fort Langley Evangelical Free Church, Living Waters Assembly, Parish of St George, and Wagner Hills Ministries, which each year provides a hay wagon, a P.A. system, and volunteer manpower. “It’s a public way of honouring what Jesus has done, and forgiveness is a big issue for the men at Wagner Hills and the women at House of Hope,” said Helmut Boehm, executive director with Wagner Hills. “We see ourselves in partnership with the churches. Fort Langley is the closest town to us and it is our home base. It’s a wonderful thing to be part of.” The service re-traces Christ’s final steps through readings, reflections, and hymns. Beginning at 10 a.m. at the Fort Langley Community Hall, participants walk together to various locations around the Village. Some of the worshipers take turns carrying a large wooden cross from one station to another. This year’s service finishes at Fort Langley Evangelical Free Church, where food and beverages will be served. “It’s very popular,” said Fort Langley Evangelical Free Church coordinator of worship Rebekah MacEwan. “Last year it was pouring rain and even still, 350 people came out.” She said having all the churches of Fort Langley involved is another interesting aspect to the day. “Everyone is so keen to participate,” she said. “The churches in the community come together and say, ‘Yes, we want to be a part of this.’”

Langley citizens may be thankful for the police when a killer is caught, or after a crack dealer is busted. Who are the police thankful for? The Langley RCMP answered that question on Thursday night at their annual appreciation dinner for their volunteers. Well over 200 people help the local RCMP detachment, in tasks ranging from aiding victims of crime, to watching for car thieves, to educating the public on safety. The dinner, held at Newlands Golf and Country Club, saw politicians and the top officers in the detachment sing the praises of their unpaid helpers. Supt. Derek Cooke, the commanding officer of the detachment, said Langley has a different ambience and feeling compared to other communities, and much of it is due to the volunteers. “Our thanks are sincere and heartfelt,” he said. He noted that two of the volunteers in the crowd, Joan and Joe Topolewski, just won the John and Muriel Arnason Volunteers of the Year Award for educating people about crime prevention. “I recognize the impact you’ve had on me and how I’ve been enriched,” Cooke said. Sometimes that took unexpected forms, as he mentioned having his backside pinched by one volunteer.

City eyes BC Senior Games bid Langley City is looking at hosting BC Senior Games. by Heather Colpitts hcolpitts@langleyadvance.com

Langley City is looking at whether to host another provincial games. This time the BC Senior Games. At Monday evening’s City council meeting, the issue was up for discussion after the Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee examined the issue and recommended going after the games. To stage a successful games, the host community would have to recruit and train approximately 1,200 volunteers, but the efforts could be well worth it. “The economic impact was last

measured in Richmond for the 2009 Richmond BC Senior Games where 3,900, 55-plus athletes participated in 29 sports leaving over $2,000,000 in the business community of Richmond,” City recreation director Kim Hilton said in her report to council. The games would be about one week during a window between late August and early September 2013 or 2014. The estimated cost would be at least $60,000 plus in-kind contributions. The report noted that the City would have to partner with a neighbouring municipality to be able to provide all the sports and amenities needed to host a provincial games. The Township is the natural first option and it has already taken the

first steps. On March 28, Langley Township council, based on a recommendation from its Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee, decided it would direct staff to look into a bid for 2013 or 2014. The Langley bid package would have to be finished by June. The host community would need to provide 1,800 beds and about 400 RV spots so neighbouring communities would also have seniors staying there, the report noted. “The benefits of hosting such an event include not only the economic impact, but the engagement of our senior population; healthy, active role models for the younger generations and participation from our volunteer community,” Hilton said in her report.

Relay for Life

Painful ordeal helps fight cancer

“It’s just hair. It’ll grow back.” Those words gave some comfort to Brookswood Secondary principal Mal Gill as he prepared to have his legs waxed as a fundraiser for the Langley Relay for Life. Students at the school raised $774 in just two days, hitting a goal of $750 Gill had set. Once the students had passed that number, he had pledged to get his legs waxed during lunch hour. “They like seeing him in pain, and not getting in trouble for it,” joked event organizer and student council president Aimee Mooney. Mooney and her fellow organizers also roped in half a dozen boys who volunteered to have their legs waxed, several who had their shaggy hair buzz-cut, and one student who had his chest waxed. All the money raised from so much pain will go to the Canadian Cancer Society. Relay for Life is Langley’s single biggest fundraiser for the charity,

Students at Brookswood have formed one of the largest teams at Relay for Life for years. Relay chair Howie Vickberg said a big reason for that has been Mooney and her two siblings, who

participants: “Local anaesthetic is an option,” he said. The waxing began with an auction for a chance to take a strip off of the principal. Gill buried his head in his hands and winced as the first few waxed strips were torn off. Some of the students were more vocal, with yelps of pain or surprise as their legs were gradually transformed. “It hurts a little bit, it’s actually not as bad as I thought it would be,” said Kiefer Jackson, who had his chest waxed. Teacher Amber Proust had her long hair cut short for the cause, losing 13 inches. Mooney said the event raised about $1,000 in total, about a third of what she hopes to raise at the school for this year’s Relay on May 27. She said about 40 students have collected sign-up forms to join the school’s teams, but she’s still recruiting. “We’re trying to get up to 60 at least,” she said. To learn more about Relay, go to www.cancer. ca/relay, and search for the Langley event. Teams can still sign up.

Mike Rauch took a picture of his six-year-old son Levi, while Levi’s sister (and Mike’s daughter) Charlotte looked on during Phoenix Velo Training Group bicycle races Saturday at the former Langley Speedway site. The quarter mile oval at the southernmost tip of 208th Street in South Langley was the place to be for car racing enthusiasts throughout the 1960s and ’70s before closing in 1984. These days it is home to such events as cycling races, swap meets, and show and shines, thanks to the hard work of the Langley Speedway Historical Society, which has restored the property and maintains it on a regular basis.

Ethan Kano-McGregor scored four times as Langley blanked visiting North Vancouver 6-0.

Langley dominated the semifinal contest from the first kickoff. Here's How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
