Township council

Zero Avenue link gets another look by Matthew Claxton

mclaxton@langleyadvance.com

Langley Township will ask residents in the area what they think of linking 200th Street to Zero Avenue. The Township council recently voted to permanently block the

intersection of Zero and 200th, except to horses, pedestrians, and emergency vehicles. But following complaints by nearby residents, they’ll take another look at the idea. “I think we should be getting more public input, sooner rather than later,” said Councillor Kim Richter.

Township engineering staff will present their findings on the matter, followed by input from the public, at an upcoming meeting, council has decided. Residents close to the intersection had called for its permanent closure earlier this spring.

Scouts clean up river

Some young Langley scouts are helping local salmon streams. by Matthew Claxton

mclaxton@langleyadvance.com

The Nicomekl River got a helping hand on Monday as a group of local scouts descended on the river to clean out invasive plants. More than a dozen Scouts and Cubs, both boys and girls, from the First Brookswood troop, helped tear out Himalayan blackberries at the Nicomekl Enhancement Society’s land on 232nd Street. Joshua Rasmussen, one of the scouts, said the group was also planting willow trees. Blackberry bushes are an invasive species that pushes out other plants, the scouts explained.

The scouts also plan to be back on Saturday to help when 22,000 salmon are released into the creek from the hatchery. For five of the young scouts, this is a milestone in more than environmental work. They’re on the verge of completing the requirements for the Chief Scout Award, the highest award in Canadian Scouting. “Really, it’s an exercise in initiative and leadership,” said Scouter Bob Smith, the advisor who has overseen and led them since they were in Cubs. The Chief Scout Award is about building on everything they’ve learned and done before, Smith said. He pointed out that the scouts, the oldest of whom are 13 and 14, had to organize the cleanup event themselves. They decided on the project and did almost everything, from

planning the event to getting supplies for lunch. In the near future, they’ll have to give a presentation to the Langley Central Rotary Club about both the history of the scouting movement, and about this week’s cleanup activities, to finish up another of their Chief Scout requirements. Smith said the youngsters have grown and matured a great deal wince they were in Cubs. “At this level, the Scouts actually drive their own program,” he said. “They’re a good bunch,” said the veteran leader. The Saturday salmon release at the Nicomekl Enhancement Society’s hatchery will start at 11 a.m. and will include hot dogs. People can come and release fish until the society runs out. The hatchery is located at 5623 232nd Street.

Don’t vote for good old days The subtext of a lot of political advertising, in this and just about every other election, is that things used to be better. You know, before that other party screwed things up. Health care didn’t have wait times, people didn’t lock their doors, and kids never sassed their elders. Poppycock. For the most part, things have actually gotten better in Canada over the past century. In 1911, women couldn’t vote, First Nations people couldn’t vote, ChineseCanadians couldn’t vote, etc. Health care was expensive, and a lot more unreliable. Crime rates spiked that year because cocaine and opium were made illegal for the first time, although you had another decade or so to smoke pot legally, before it was banned in the 1920s. Somewhere, a newspaper editor was writing angrily about the kids these days, with their loud music and those crazy baggy pants. Every generation has problems to face. We’ve seen Great Depressions and World Wars, spikes in crime and gang violence, baby booms and the battle against racism and sexism. Some of those problems we’ve gotten a good handle on, for others our solutions are works in progress. Taking part in politics based on the idea that “things were better back in the good old days” is a losing proposition. Remember, our first and most fascinating Prime Minister, Sir. John A. Macdonald, was run out of office by a corruption scandal. We’re not arguing that things stay the same, and that things were just as bad back then. We’re arguing that things are better now than they were, because people of good will worked to make them better. Don’t vote while looking back, either in anger or regret. Vote while looking forward, to making things better still. – M.C.

Federal election 2011

Economy relies on votes Dear Editor,

This election campaign has been an unmitigated disaster, not for any particular political party, but for the environment and ultimately for you and I.

Federal election 2011

Vote for coalition Dear Editor,

My wife and I attended an all-candidates meeting in our community. Five candidates attended from the Conservative, Liberal, NDP, Green, and Pirate parties. What struck me is how closely aligned the policies of the four nonConservative parties are, and how sharply they contrasted with the Conservative platform. I personally don’t vote Conservative, but I could vote for any of the other parties except for the Pirates. What frustrates me is that I know that like-minded voters will spread their votes across these other parties and the Conservative candidate will be elected again in our riding. At the national level, in our House of Commons, the same applies to our opposition parties. Leaving aside the separatist agenda of the Bloc, the policies of the three opposition parties are very similar. It is important to note too that the Conservatives in their five years of minority government have never had more than 40 per cent of the popular vote. In the last Parliament, they had 37.7 per cent. So 60 per cent of Canadians voted for the other parties and their policies. Perhaps a coalition of the opposition parties would give us a more stable government than we have had and be more closely aligned with the majority of Canadians. I say let’s give it a go.

Bill Masse, Langley

The environment may have not been a primary issue for most Canadians, but one would expect good leaders to have identified it as such. The political party least likely to address human-induced climate change, whether in minority and especially if in majority, is the Conservatives. The Conservatives claim that their priority is the economy. How many floods, the latest currently in full swing in Manitoba, ice storms, windstorms, heat waves, and droughts can an economy deal with before the coffers get strained – affecting programs and services that would normally be funded? How is your household economy going to cope with these disruptions, which will affect your very livelihoods, whether in business, agriculture, forestry or fisheries? If a political party is not prepared to give equal weight to the environmental issue, is this the kind of government this country needs to look after the economy? Conservative supporters say they deserve a majority because they are such great fiscal managers… they who wiped out a surplus of $13 million in two years and have run up a deficit of $55 million in their term in office – a total deficit of $65 million! If the Conservatives form the majority, in their zeal to protect the fossil fuel industry, will they quell discussion on climate change by cutting back government funding on climate change monitoring? This will move this country even further away for the urgent and critical discussion, and action we need to have, not only on further reducing greenhouse gases, but also adapting to the impacts that climate change already has in store for us. If the environment matters to you – and it should – the parties having the strongest position on the environment are the Greens, the Liberals, the NDP, the Bloc and last (by a long shot), the Conservatives. Vote well, because the economy depends on it.

Medical pot not cop domain So apparently “legal grow ops” are a bother to the police [Legal grow ops a headache for Mounties, March 11, Langley Advance]. And the people who are being blamed are the sick. I suppose next we will hear is that the blame for sexual assault lies with women who wear short skirts. The comparison is appropriate, considering what is proposed is a registry of medical marijuana patients much like that used for sex offenders, all for using medicine prescribed to them legitimately – medicine, it is important to add, that is safer than every single medication in your local drug store, without exception.

They are currently not protected under the federal program, and face jail if caught. I doubt that these questions – or the patients – have even been considered. Langley City and Township are going to bid on the BC Senior Games. Still to be decided is whether it’s the 2013 or 2014 games. Langley Township agreed to be part of a joint bid in late March while Langley City council decided to prep a bid at Monday’s council meeting but not before some questions were raised. “How will be judge or assess the economic impact on the City?” asked Councillor Dave Hall. Mayor Peter Fassbender said that comparisons of numbers of hotel rooms booked and anecdotal information from businesses helps form a picture. “I think the intent is to share the load,” he said. Richmond hosted the games in 2009 and the impact was studied. The 3,900,

55-plus athletes participated in 29 sports spent more than $2 million. Fassbender noted that Langley games would need about 1,800 hotel rooms and 400 RV spots so it’s sure to be economically worthwhile for both communities. About 3,900 competitors are expected. “With that number of people, we don’t have an excess of rooms,” he commented. The games come with a $60,000 price tag (in addition to in-kind donations). That would be split between the City and Township based on population. As well, the City would look for sponsors to help with costs. The games would also need about 1,200 volunteers. Coun. Gayle Martin brought up the issue of community groups and businesses bring brought into the process. “We’ll be adding more partners as we go,” said Kim Hilton, the City recreation director. Staff from the two municipalities will be meeting to hammer out more details before reporting back to their respective councils. The bid package has to be done by June.

As a mom to five children between the ages of 15 and 26, Walnut Grove author Brenda Wollenberg has, time and time again, gingerly stepped through the minefield otherwise known as children’s nutrition. Getting kids to think nutrition first is especially challenging, with the lure of the Internet and video games often keeping kids off playgrounds and playing fields and leading them onto computer chairs and couches. When obesity became the presenting issue for an increasing number of clients in her nutritional consultfood, as close to possible to its oriing practice, Wollenberg drew on ginal food – like what your grandevery facet of her education and parents ate, sort of thing, but more experience – social work, nutrition, fun.” In her family, which includes pastoring and parenting. two girls and three boys, Wollenberg Wollenberg’s new book Overweight didn’t adopt a one-size-fits-all diet Kids in a Toothpick World describes plan. the Kids in Balance “I have two kids (KIB) program she has who you would created to cut, she says, call ‘roundy’ kids,” “I think we “through the excuses Wollenberg explained. do children a and misinformation.” “They’re stocky, disservice if we The book, which they’re built like their includes more than 50 dad, they’re solid, don’t help them pages of recipes, helps German stock. You are always pairing something that is nutritionally dense with something that has fibre to it.” Wollenberg herself struggled with weight issues when she attended Trinity Western University. “You eat enough residential food at university and you can pack on some pretty good pounds, there,” she said. “I actually weighed less full term pregnant with my kids than I had at one point. After that I figured out what I needed to do to stay healthy and well and [now] it’s not been a challenge.” She became very interested in the holistic health field and achieved her two year certification in nutrition from the Canadian School of Natural Nutrition. Picture a hypnotherapy session and you’ll likely envision someone’s eyes following a watch as it swings in front of their face like a pendulum, before the subject drifts into a sleep-like state. Such is not the case, stresses Langley-based clinical hypnotherapist Jackie Maclean. She is quick to point out that clients aren’t “out” and know exactly what is happening around them during sessions. “They are aware of everything that is going on,” she said. “It’s a light trance. In some cases, people go into a deeper trance, but to make changes, you don’t have to go very deep.” Maclean runs her hypnotherapy business, The Power Within, out of her home after she sold her printing shop in downtown Langley two years ago. Maclean, who a couple of winters back was looking into instilling her “mind-over-matter” mantra into the head space of Canucks players when Vancouver’s NHL team was mired in a terrible slump, said she has found success helping people overcome vices and addictions including alcohol, cocaine, and crystal meth. A person’s subconscious can’t differentiate between what is real and what is vividly imagined, according to Maclean, who spoke on a Radio India station back on Jan. 4, in honour of World Hypnotism Day. “Self hypnosis is about

Get Spring is the time to buy plants and various groups are hosting sales. by Heather Colpitts hcolpitts@langleyadvance.com

“Come and see what unusual items you can find for your own garden this year,” she said.

hether it’s a few containers on a balcony or an acreage with multiple planting beds, homeowners are always looking for ways to beautify their surroundings. The Lower Mainland climate offers gardeners, no matter how green the thumb, many options for plant materials. There are several sales coming up that offer selections of flowers, bushes, shrubs, trees, fruits and vegetables. • The Langley Garden Club Saturday, April 30 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sharon United Church grounds “The Langley Garden Club’s Annual Spring Show and Sale this year also marks the 70th anniversary of the club,” noted Pam Erikson, a longtime member. To mark the occasion, Langley Township Mayor Rick Green is scheduled to cut an anniversary cake at 1 p.m. The club’s annual Spring Show and Sale marks the official start of the blooming season. Spring bulbs and other flowers, foliage and photographs will be judged in the parlor show, while the club and selected local vendors will have plants and garden items for sale

ou will need to prune the climbing hydrangea. I wish I could reassure you that your climbing hydrangea will recover. But having to move it twice means double stress for it. Also it’s best moved when it’s dormant, but since this is April, it will already be entering its growing season. Hydrangeas generally aren’t that hard to move. But the smaller ones are definitely easier. If your climbing hydrangea is longestablished, it will have a huge mass of roots in a very heavy root ball. It will help if you can move as large a root ball as possible (without wrecking your backs). The pruning should try to equalize the roots within the root ball with the amount of top growth you leave intact. If the roots are too few to look after the remaining top growth, you’ll get a lot of dieback (maybe total dieback). But if you’re going to guess wrong (and it’s easy to guess wrong), you’re safest to have too many roots for the amount of top growth you’ve left.

Declutter for a cause

Royal LePage realty offices across Canada are hosting the National Garage Sale for Shelter. by Heather Colpitts hcolpitts@langleyadvance.com

S

pring is a favourite time to declutter and one way to free up space around the house is donating to the National Garage Sale for Shelter. Royal LePage realty offices across the country, including Royal LePage Wolstencroft of Langley, are holding sales in the communities they serve, and donating to the sales will help provide shelter for women escaping domestic violence. The National Garage Sale for Shelter is May 14. One hundred per cent of the revenue generated from the event will benefit the Royal LePage Shelter Foundation, directly helping women and children that have experienced family violence. More than half of Canadian women will experience abuse in their lifetime and over 360,000 children are exposed to family violence every year. Canadians can also help support the cause to end family violence by donating gently used items to their participating local Royal

LePage office. Doug Dyer is the realtor organizing the Langley sale. On that day, people can enjoy a barbecue, music, kids’ activities, and of course bargains on gently used items. While the local realty office is organizing the sale as part of a national charity campaign, the Langley sale itself does not take place there. Dyer explained that Premier Atlas Van Lines has donated space, and the sale takes place at the moving company site, 5-6350 204 St. That’s also where people would take donations before the sale. People are asked to wait until the week before the sale to donate items. Accepted will be gently used items such as clothing, household goods, small furnitire and tools as they prove the most successful for garage sales. People are asked not to donate large furniture, TVs, or electronics and appliances. People can contact Royal LePage Wolstencroft Realty at 604-530-0231 for more information or with questions. Since 2009, the National Garage Sale for Shelter raised more than $435,000, and the Royal Le Page Shelter Foundation has raised more than $12 million since its inception, helping fund long-term solutions to end violence in Canadian homes.

Mother’s Day

Youth spent cooking with Mom

M

other’s Day is approaching, and it is not only a day to spend time with your mom, grandmother, or wife, but also to remember and reminisce. As a child, my mom was the biggest influence on my life and upbringing. Being a single parent of four children for many years, she persevered through many of life’s obstacles to ensure a suitable developmental environment for all of us. There are many examples of her dedication to motherhood, but the fire of culinary aspirations that she fueled within me is something that I am forever grateful for. Ever since I can remember, she was always there to offer me a spot beside her in the kitchen. While other boys my age were involved in various sports activities, my idea of a team was right there in our home. Still to this day, I can almost hear the scuffing of the old wooden footstool as I dragged it across the floor. There I would stand upon the flour-dusted crevices as she secured my apron, readying me for our next culinary adventure. Many of our kitchen conversations were a journey back in time. Descriptive adventures of what life was like when she was a child were what I loved the most. Her parents migrated to Canada from Germany in the early 1930s and they worked the land as farmers in

Saskatchewan. Stories of the brutally cold winters and how most of their meals came from their crops and the pigs that they raised always kept me captivated. As a child, she, too, was always by her mom’s side in the kitchen. It was there that she gained the culinary skills that were passed on to me. Many of the meals that I was exposed to as a child were influenced by not only her German heritage, but also by the underprivileged lifestyle of fortuneless farmers. Creative simplicity was always the focus as we transformed everyday ingredients into something incredible. Some of the most memorable foods for me that stimulate thoughts of my childhood are rice pudding, cherry soup, and sugared milk bread slices. The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach’, but it is also the way to many great memories. Thank you Mom for the laughter, the tears, the guidance, and the years. You are always on my mind. Innes will kick off the track season May 8 when he will compete in the 200m event at the Loughborough Trials, a meet which determines who will represent Scotland at the Loughborough International – a competition between England, Scotland, Wales, and Loughborough university alumni, a team compiled from the British universities and colleges and Great Britain’s U20 squad – on May 22.

Wheelchair racing icon Kelly Smith has won the men’s open division of the Vancouver Sun Run 10 km so often that the story’s no longer about that day’s pushing. No, it’s all about what this 46-year-old paraplegic thrillseeker is up to now. How about free diving and free dive scooter racing? Actually, we’ll get to his latest adventure in a minute because Smith did provide a talking point in his 27-minute, four-second ramble through the streets of Vancouver April 17 by doing it while wearing a Darth Vader-like helmet, chest armour and spike-adorned shoulder pads. “Just trying to intimidate people – a few props, that’s all I need,” said a grinning Smith after winning for the ninth time since 1998. “Nah, just having some fun. This [outfit] is from the [2010] Paralympics opening ceremonies. I decided to put it on display again in respect to the lady who did all the costumes and all the good work she did. It gets a lot of attention.” Simon Harrington of Courtenay was second in 29:29 and Masashi Shinoda of Vancouver, who was using the day as a fundraiser for victims of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan, was third in 39:28. James Hustvedt of North Vancouver won the men’s quad division, in 43:22. continued on page A25…

Elite racer battled injuries prior to Sun Run victory

…continued from page A23 Smith, an air traffic controller from Langley and the 2004 Paralympic silver medallist in the marathon, did his fastest Sun Run in 2003 with a time of 20:54. This year’s race, he said, was just a “cruise through the park, a lot of smiles and laughs.” Smith, who skipped last year’s Sun Run, said the effort was only about his third time in his racing chair in three years. He’s been struggling with shoulder and arm ailments, including a bad right elbow that never fully healed after he broke it in two places in a fall from a downhill mountain bike on a trail at the Haleakala Crater in Maui in late 2007. “Every time I go back to hard training, I just aggravate it. I get constant fluid and swelling in the elbow. That one really bit me in the butt. As my mom said, ‘One of these days, you’re going to regret doing these stupid things’.” Which brings us to free diving, something he was turned on to by his fiance, Jill Yoneda, a Canadian national team member. “It’s real easy on my elbows,” he says with another big grin. “It’s just all about holding your breath and going down as deep and as far as you can.

Kelly Smith won the men’s open wheelchair racing division, marking the ninth time he’s captured the title since 1998. He raced in gear from the opening ceremonies of the 2010 Paralympic Games.

Swimmers achieving 100 per cent best times were Chelsea Borrowdale, Meredith Clark, Emily d’Entremont, Lisa Grier, Renae Ledoux, Kelley MacDonald, Avery Martin, Robyn Nakano, Gabby Szalkai and Hannah Weinkauf. “This was our first heats

Allstar Collision Services Ltd. “I’ve been doing it now for two years with her. In a couple of weeks we’re leaving for three weeks in the Cayman Islands to do some competitions.” Those competitions include the newest discipline in free diving: Formula 3 scooter racing. Equipped with a lightweight, aluminum propulsion system strapped between their legs, competitors race through gates stationed 20 to 60 feet below the surface, all on a single breath. “It’s pretty cool. I’m up to a six-

and-a-half minute breathhold,” said Smith. “These lungs have to come to a few good uses. “It changes the whole world of snorkelling. You’re able to be comfortably down for a period of time. And then the competitive side of it is pretty neat, too. To see how deep you can go or how long you can hold your breath before you black out. I’ve definitely pushed the limits and I’ve seen [blackouts], but I’ve never blacked out. I’ve come to the edge of it. That’s part of the sport. Like any sport,

you’ve got to know what that edge is.” For static breathholds, Smith said his history as a wheelchair marathoner means he has “good capacity for uptake of oxygen.” Plus, in not having as much muscle mass in his lower limbs as ablebodied divers, he benefits from economy of movement. “But as far as distance stuff, I’m not going to be very competitive because I can’t kick like everybody else.

and finals long course meet of the season, and all our swimmers were up for the challenge,” LOSC head coach Brian Metcalfe said. “All of them raced with strength, power and determination with many making finals, winning medals, breaking club and meet records, and all achieving best times in a number of

events. I am so impressed with their dedication and racing abilities, and we are looking forward to more success as the season continues.” ••• Last weekend also saw two Langley Olympians

swimmers represent Team BC in Alberta. Martha Metcalfe, 14, and Justin Schramm, 13, were members of the winning BC team at the Prospects Tri Meet in Lethbridge. B.C. placed first with 1,603 points, followed

Alberta with 1,572 points and Manitoba/Saskatoon with 1,372 points. LOSC registration is ongoing. Call 604-532-5257 or visit the website www. langleyolympians.com for more details.

1971: Record high heat Seventy Years Ago

Thirty Years Ago

• Pictures of the King and Queen were framed by A.J. McDougall and hung in a place of honour above the reeve’s (mayor’s) chair in municipal council chamber.

• A $1 million fire at Allwood Industries on Logan Avenue had firefighters busy for 12 hours and left 50 lumber mill workers without jobs. • Township Alderman Muriel Arnason received council’s backing for her proposal to introduce a vote of nonconfidence in the Fraser Valley Regional Library Board. An office manager at the FVRL had been fired after $100,000 went missing, and Arnason felt sure further financial and other problems would surface.

Sixty Years Ago

MAY 3, 1951

• A special meeting of council was called to reconsider establishing a hose bank for the four volunteer fire departments. • An extra police officer was assigned to the Langley RCMP, pending completion of a police station. Councillor Noel Booth wanted to know why Surrey had received 15 new officers in the past year, while Langley got only five.

Fifty Years Ago

MAY 4, 1961

• Provincial Liberal leader Ray Perrault, speaking at a meeting at Langley central school, described the B.C. Social Credit government as tired, arbitrary, and quarrelsome. He said the Socreds had lost their vision. • Langley District’s 1961 tax rate was jacked back up to 48 mills after council decided the initially proposed 46 mills were not sufficient.

Forty Years Ago

APRIL 29, 1971

• After the school tax rate was set, Langley City residents found they had no increase in overall taxes, and Township residents were getting a decrease of 0.7 mills. • The County Line weather station recorded a record high temperature of 80ºF (17.8ºC) on April 25. • Four thousand people left Murrayville Elementary to embark upon the ninth annual Langley Walk. More than 85 per cent finished the 18-mile (29 km) hike.

APRIL 29, 1981

Twenty Years Ago

APRIL 24, 1991

• Langley School trustees, who had submitted a $7-million deficit “needs” budget to the province, were “directed” by Education Minister Stan Hagen to reconsider the budget – and balance it.

Ten Years Ago

APRIL 24, 2001

• The Willoughby Connector, joining 64th Avenue to 208th Street, was opened, offering easier access to Walnut Grove from points south, via the 208th Street freeway overpass. • Walnut Grove technology student Anthony Yang won the provincial Skills Canada competition.

APRIL 27, 2001

• Langley City council voted 6-1 for a bylaw to impose stiff fines on landlords who do not report illegal activities to police. • Val Meredith, Canadian Alliance MP for Surrey-White Rock-South Langley, wanted party leader Stockwell Day to step down. Her highprofile request resulted in a party shake-up – with Day still leader, and LangleyAbbotsford MP Randy White named caucus chair.

WALNUT GROVE BUSINESS ASSOCIATION • WGBA would like thank volunteers who participated in last Saturday’s WG Clean Up Day, special thanks to Tim Horton’s for donating coffee, donuts and Tim cards to volunteers, Driving Force for providing the BBQ for the lunch The Township of Langley bought and the RCMP cooked. A good time was had by all… and our community is much cleaner due to the few hands of many helpers. Thank you again, and we hope to see you all again in the fall. • The newly elected WGBA directors will be meeting for the first time next week to formulate the roles each of the directors will play in this new board, as well as to establish a plan for the upcoming year.

Every little bit helps

Tim LaHay picked up litter in a wooded section of Walnut Grove Park Saturday. LaHay, the food and beverage manager at The Redwoods Golf Course, took part in a clean-up day in Walnut Grove. Businesses and volunteers joined the RCMP and the Township of Langley for the event. Activities included litter pickup, graffiti removal, pressure washing, and sidewalk cleaning. A similar clean-up in Aldergrove drew approximately 200 volunteers Saturday morning. The two events – encouraging residents to spruce up their communities and beautify their streets, trails, creeks, and parks by removing litter – kicked off Pitch-In Week, which runs April 18-24 across Canada.

Firm offers Earth Day aid To mark Earth Day, a Lower Mainland firm is taking to the links in Langley. However, the employees of Pitney Bowes, whose local office is based in Burnaby, weren’t worried about avoiding sand traps. On Thursday, staff from the company came to the Redwoods Golf Course to plant trees, clean and repair bird houses, and assist with a general cleaning of various environmentally sensitive areas on the Walnut Grove course. Redwoods is home to more than 70 species of birds. The golf course is owned by the Township of Langley, but still managed by its original owners. It is slated to become a Township park eventually. Some areas of the course have already been turned into small parks and trails, including an area on the north side of the property along 96th Avenue near 216th Street. Redwoods has also been working for years to make itself a greener course. In

2009, it came second in the Green Golfer Challenge hosted by National Audubon Society, getting thousands of pledges from its golfers to be environmentally responsible.

A covenant placed on the land means it can’t be changed from parkland without a referendum and the votes of 50 per cent or more of Township residents.

Signs about wildlife dot Redwoods Golf Course, as part of its campaign to be a green facility. Langley Advance files

The Perfect Roast Chicken

golden brown, juicy & delicious 5 to 6 lb I,:%>%CO Farm Fresh Roasting Chicken 1 Tbsp butter salt and freshly ground black pepper 2 medium onions peeled and sliced 1 lemon 3 large cloves garlic, peeled 4 sprigs fresh thyme 1 cup chicken broth (for making gravy) Let chicken and 1 Tbsp butter stand at room temperature for 30 minutes. Preheat oven to 425°F. Rinse chicken inside and out under cold running water and dry with paper towel. Tuck the wing tips under the body. Sprinkle the cavity of the chicken liberally with salt and pepper, and set aside. Place the palm of your hand on top of lemon and, pressing down, roll lemon back and forth several times. This softens the lemon and allows the juice to flow more freely. Pierce entire surface of lemon with a fork. Using the side of a large knife, gently press on garlic cloves to open slightly. Insert garlic cloves, thyme sprigs, and lemon into cavity of the chicken. Cover the bottom of your roasting pan with onion slices. Place chicken in pan on onion slices. Spread the softened butter over entire surface of chicken, and sprinkle liberally with salt and pepper. Place in the oven, and roast until skin is deep golden brown and crisp, and the juices run clear when pierced, about 1 ½ hours. The chicken is done when the temperature in the thigh reads 190°F on an instant read thermometer. Remove chicken from oven and let chicken stand 10 to 15 minutes so the juices settle. Remove and discard garlic, thyme, and lemon and carve. Use pan drippings to make a fabulous gravy.
