Mark Warawa has actually increased his already commanding percentage of the popular vote in Langley. Following the federal trend, both the Conservatives and the NDP gained in Langley, while the Liberals were a distant third. The atmosphere inside Mark Warawa’s campaign headquarters on the Langley Bypass was raucous. The party faithful watched the local Conservative vote hover around 63.5 per cent – up from 62.5 per cent last time out – while the national numbers indicated that Stephen Harper was quickly running towards becoming prime minister of a majority government. Supporters chanted “ma-jor-i-ty” as the victorious MP strolled up the stairs and entered the room with his wife Diane. Youngsters held up letters spelling out the Conservative Party’s victory across Canada. To the cheers of Warawa’s supporters, his campaign manager Tanya Tait said she wore red shoes to signify “kicking some Liberal butt.” Warawa thanked all those who helped get him re-elected to his fourth term as MP. “Thank you for spending the last 39 days helping us get that victory,” he said. “We’re building a better Canada for our following generations. Thank you for making that possible.”

In 2006, Ernie Kasper was a 33-year-old husand and father of a toddler and a three-month-old leading a healthy active life. A stroke wasn’t even on his radar, save for the many older stroke patients he worked with as a rehabilitation assistant, a job the Langley man loved. Kasper was on his lunch break at work at MSA Hospital in Abbotsford where he had been for about eight years. He was doing martial arts exercises. “Everything just melted,” he said. At 33, he was having a stroke. “I’ve worked with stroke patients like crazy, and I didn’t know what was happening,” Kasper said. He struggled to get back indoors. People he encountered, both staff and others, noticed something was off but he went back to work, even though it felt like the ground was rocking, his depth perception was changing and his words became garbled. Then he drove himself home and went to bed, which his wife, Chelsey, knew wasn’t normal for the man with boundless energy. Chelsey, having recently read an article on strokes, tested him. “Stick out your tongue. Move it to the left. Now right. Raise your arms.” He was able to do the tasks and went back to bed. His wife convinced him something was wrong and while she stayed with their infant, he started walking to a nearby clinic. A friend was driving past and Kasper started talking to him in German. He took his friend to the clinic where the doctor acknowledged something was wrong and gave him a form requesting a CT scan of his brain. The friend then took Kasper to the hospital where a clerical error meant he wasn’t seen for quite some time. He remembers a nurse telling a doctor she thought Kasper was on drugs. He asked for the CT scan and the doctor refused, instead asking about migraines and chalking up the symptoms to migraines.
Two awards ceremonies saw the Advance singled out as among the top papers in the country for editorial writing, photography, and community involvement. Both the Canadian Community Newspaper Association (CCNA) and the B.C. and Yukon Community Newspaper Association (BCYCNA) held their awards ceremonies in Richmond, on Friday and Saturday respectively. The Langley Advance won the CCNA award for Best National Editorial for “Avoiding shots irresponsible” in the April 12, 2010 edition, urging people to vaccinate their children. The editorial was written by Matthew Claxton. Reporter Troy Landreville won a silver award for Best Photo Illustration, for his picture of athlete Trevor Toulmin, with the story “Skater readies for Crashed Ice” on May 12, 2010. At the BCYCNA awards, known as the Ma Murray awards, the Advance won a bronze for the Community Service Award, and Matthew Claxton came in third in the columnist category. This was the second year that the Advance has been nominated for the Community Service Award, having won last year for the Community Harvest program. Both award events were held at the River Rock Theatre in Richmond. The two community newspaper associations hold the annual awards to showcase the best reporting from the papers that cover local communities, from small towns in the high Arctic to the suburbs near the U.S. border.

Ernie Kasper is running from Langley to Abbotsford to raise awareness about strokes in young adults. Since his stroke, he’s mentored people like Monica Buchanan (see page A15). Kasper was sent home and even drove for two weeks. But the man known for his joviality was yelling at people and having other problems. Thankfully he encountered a nurse friend at work. “She looked at me and said ‘Ernie, sit down,’” he said. “I felt
Way of the Dove
Ernie Kaspar wants to inspire hope, in other stroke victims and others facing serious challenges in their lives. So he’s inviting people for a run on May 8. He plans to run from the Nature’s Fare Market at 19880 Langley Bypass to the Abbotsford Regional Hospital. He’s going the full 31 kilometres. Others can choose to also or do increments of the full distance. Sean Aiken, the young Canadian man who did the project 52 jobs in 52 weeks, will be taking part in the event. Kasper has dubbed the campaign Way of the Dove. The campaign logo now graces hats and T-shirts which people can buy to support stroke awareness. Any money people donate through his Way of the Dove event will be given to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of B.C. and Yukon. He sets out from Langley at 12:30 p.m. on May 8. Those who can’t do the run are still encouraged to head to Nature’s Fare for a pre-run send-off. More information is at http://wayofthedove. blogspot.com/.
another one happening.” He was finally scanned and the neurologist said he had had a stroke. “That can’t be,” he thought. “I just heard a death sentence.” How could this happen to a man who ate mostly organic food, was active in many sports, had a positive outlook on life, and was a young father? If it was tough getting tested, it was even tougher getting therapy to recover from the effects of the stroke which affected his body and emotions. Then there’s problems with comprehension, memory, moods, and stress management. At times there were half a dozen seizures per day. His wife ended up having to be a staunch advocate for care throughout the ordeal, fighting to get him therapy while juggling life with two small children. Kasper said if he had been a senior at the time there would have been more care and support. Kasper has started a web page and posted videos of his progress. He’s done projects for the Heart and Stroke Foundation of B.C. and the Yukon and has become a mentor to other young stroke patients, offering a message of hope despite the devastating impacts of strokes. “Never think that your dreams can die,” he said, “but if they do, get new ones.” • More online at www.langleyadvance. com, click on “News

Seven Langley RCMP officers are being lauded for helping to get drunk drivers off the roads. The local Mounties are among 92 recognized from around the Lower Mainland for diligence in impaired driving investigations. They will join Alexa’s Team, named after Alexa Middelaer, a fouryear-old Delta girl who was killed when a car driven by a drunk driver veered off the road and slammed into the young girl and her aunt. The driver of that car was later convicted of impaired driving causing bodily harm and death. Officers must send a minimum of 10 impaired driving charges and/or 90 day driving prohibitions to make the team. There are currently 219 members of Alexa’s Team in B.C.

Six of seven Langley Mounties being honoured as part of Alexa’s Team were joined by Alexa’s mother, Laurel Middelaer, at a ceremony in Surrey on April 27. Langley’s officers joining the team are Const. Mark Booth, Const. Alison Lambie, Const. Robert Johnston, Const. Hayden Willems, and Const.
Brett Henderson of Langley Traffic Services, and general duty officers Const. Gaenor Cox and Const Sukhwinder Parmar.

About 800 people were drawn outside by beautiful sunshine and warm temperatures to take part in the 49th annual Langley Walk on Sunday. Even before the walk got underway, the parking lot of the George Preston Recreation Centre was filled with events and entertainment, from
singers to facepainting, clowns, and the ever-popular bouncy castle. “We wanted to give people a whole day of fun, not just the Walk,” said Township recreation programmer Barbara Jeffery. The walk is created for both Langleys, City and Township, and encourages residents to take a five or 10 km course through a different part of the community every year. Several local residents were recognized for special participation. • Inta Schorcht was the oldest walker at age 89. • Leah Bradshaw and Janene Sellers were Most Creative Walkers,
for their Hawaiian costumes. • The Butcher family had the most family members in one group. • Pacific Coast Taekwondo was the organization with the most participants. • Langley Fundamental Elementary and Middle School had the highest student participation. After the walk, a group of Township councillors tested their pipes as part of a “Glee-off” singing competition. Never on Mondays, the council team, squared off against YAC Attack, the Youth Advisory Council singers. The youngsters took the victory.

Motherhood
Moms deserve more respect
Dear Editor, Statistics show that Canadians, with our fertility rate at 1.6, are not having enough babies to replace our population. This has huge implications for our future as the populations of seniors continues to grow. One reason often cited is that people are waiting longer to start a family. In Canada, the average age to have a first baby is 28. As a young woman, I often get the impression (through movies, TV shows, commercials) that marriage and motherhood are seen as a negative responsibility, instead of a blessed privilege. Society portrays the lives of wives and mothers as too tiring and too much work, and that your “me” time
gets taken away. So while I am not belittling the challenges of marriage and motherhood, I think our society should be promoting a more positive demeanour towards them. Women are not missing out on life’s pleasures if they choose to marry and have children at a young age, but instead should be embracing this time in their lives that they can share with husbands and children. Married women and mothers should encourage young women with their stories and experiences, and realize that their titles as a wives and mothers are respected by many. Sue DeHaas, Langley
Crime
Prison not best place for criminals
Dear Editor, H.L. Mencken once said, “There is always a wellknown solution to every human problem – neat, plausible, and wrong.” I believe it applies to the Conservative approach to crime, which is to increase sentences – a view also held by two-thirds of Canadians.
But many studies show that stiffer sentences do little to reduce crime rates. What’s more, it costs $343,800 per year to keep a woman in prison, and from $140,500 to $223,687 for a man, depending on the level of security required. Many repeat criminals have drug addictions or

Dear Editor, The Metro Vancouver park folks have spend a ton of money to develop a beautiful, large walking trail that starts/ ends at 208th Street just north of Allard Crescent. At the gate there is a garbage can and doggy bag dispenser, which indicates to me that they expect some folks will be entering that trail there. Now there are signs up at that entrance advising all who park and start that walk from 208th Street that the Township is ticketing those cars – because there is no parking there. But I drove all the way from 208th Street to Louie Crescent and did not see one “no parking” sign. I have two concerns: where are we supposed to park, and how can a “no parking” ticket be issued when there are no signs indicating “no parking”? I live in a townhouse complex at the end of a cul-de-sac with a blind bend in the street, and people are constantly parking beyond the “no parking” signs, and the Township doesn’t seem to be ticketing those people. other substance abuse problems, mental illness, poor life skills, or lack of job skills, or perhaps made poor decisions when they were young that have spun their lives out of control. Instead of restricting the creativity of judges, we should increase the sentencing options available. What if, instead of a prison, judges could sentence non-violent criminals to a facility that was staffed not by guards, but by all manner of health professionals and counsellors. The facility would provide treatment for substance abuse, life skills training, job skills training, assistance finding and keeping a job, assistance finding housing, and whatever is required to get these people functional in society. The same could be done for some violent offenders, as well, but greater security would be required. Surely, such service could have more positive effect. Of course there are dangerous psychopaths for whom there is no hope. Let’s keep prisons for them. Bill Masse, Langley

Township, and we should be determining regulations for use. There are probably more than 20,000 dog owners in Langley who are being adversely affected by archaic bylaws and regulations from Langley Township and Metro Vancouver. If all other municipalities can provide off-leash trails to dog owners, there is no reason the same can’t be done for Langley residents. There is an election coming up in November 2011, and we will be watching and making note of which councillors represented our interests, and which ones abstained from representing us. We will communicate with our many dog groups within Langley, so all of them are apprised of who represented their interests. Dear Editor, I live in Walnut Grove and walk my dog in my neighbourhood, which includes taking him off leash in the trails in North Langley. I want those trails designated as off-leash areas, so I do not have to experience confrontations with Metro Vancouver’s aggressive rangers. Many dog owners frequently complain about the off-leash restrictions and the aggressiveness of Metro Vancouver’s rangers in harassing us dog owners. The regulations are unreasonable, and consequently, we will continue to use the trails as offleash areas. It has been suggested that Aldergrove Park could be designated as an off-leash trail area, however it is incredibly unreasonable to expect me to drive more than 50 kilometres (25 km each way) to exercise my dog every day of the week, after working and commuting eight to nine hours already. The trails belong to the residents of the

Candidates console Three parties watch results together. by Heather Colpitts hcolpitts@langleyadvance.com
“I must say that I’m baffled,” said Liberal candidate Rebecca Darnell. At a small gathering after the polls closed, she told the Langley Advance that she is at a loss to understand why Canadians would elect a majority Conservative government. “I’m disappointed that the people of Canada have chosen a prime minister to lead the country who has been held in contempt of Parliament on two occasions,” she said. He’s also prorogued Parliament more than once. Darnell said this is a party that claims to be about law and order yet breaks the laws of this country “and that stuns me.” She also expressed disappointment that Canadians didn’t reject the negative attack ads from the Tories. “We take the high road because that’s what the people say they want,” Darnell commented. She said it’s too soon to say what her political future holds – “I haven’t had the opportunity to cry in my sparkling water yet” – and whether the federal election results were an indictment of party leader Michael Ignatieff. But she offered up her interpretation of the Bloc Quebecois trouncing. “I think that people have simply seen that separatism isn’t going to happen,” she commented. The Conservatives hammered on the idea that only they could save Canadians

from the economic collapse experienced elsewhere in the world, but Darnell said Harper came to power with a Liberal surplus. “Do they not understand the $56-billion deficit he’s created?” she wondered about voters. This government will “put Canadians so far behind that there’s a risk of bankruptcy,” Darnell said. She said a majority Conservative government will, despite promises to hold fixed election dates, hang onto power as long as it can. “It will be a very long time before we have an election,” Darnell said. Craig Nobbs, the local Pirate Party candidate, and Green candidate Carey Poitras were with Darnell as results came in. Both are newcomers to running but said they valued the experience and would consider running again in future elections. “I got a lot of positive feedback,” said Nobbs. He said much of that came from young people who appreciated a party that cares about technology issues, which affect their daily lives. “I think the party will only continue to grow,” Nobbs said. Poitras was all smiles as news came in Monday evening that the Greens had a seat. (Party leader Elizabeth May won her seat.) “It’s been an all around great experience,” she said. The people she met during the campaign were very encouraging. “We’re going to keep pushing foward,” she said. “And people will realize we’re not just a one-issue party.”

Acts prove Langley Has Talent by Heather Colpitts
hcolpitts@langleyadvance.com
Tiffany Desrosiers didn’t feel confident in her performance at Saturday’s Langley Has Talent finals, and knew the other acts were strong. “I thought all the teams were amazing,” she said. So when the judges called out Britt Bonshor as the third place winner and Sarah Tummon as coming in second, she never expected her name to be called as the winner. “I actually was not sure at all,” she told the Langley Advance minutes after being picked as the first winner of the first-ever Langley Has Talent contest. She’s hoping for a career in the music industry, and the $2,500 first prize and entertainment industryrelated prizes will help her down that road. “You go there not expecting anything and do your best,” she said, summing up how she approached the competition. Susan Jacks, a member of the Poppy Family, was one of the three judges who said she enjoyed the opportunity to see people performing live in an age when so much entertainment is highly processed. “Here you see and hear people just trying from the bottom of their heart,” she said.
Heather Colpitts/Langley Advance
Tiffany Desrosiers was elated when her name was read out as the winner and she was handed a large first prize cheque in the contest. The self-described Haney girl was pleased to see so many people come out to watch the finals, despite there being a Canucks game that evening. “I like to see people come and support their own,” she added. “I think it’s really nice for the community to come and support its talent.” The contest was a joint effort between the Langley Rotary Club, the Rotary Club of Langley Central,
the Rotary Club of Langley Sunrise, and the Aldergrove Rotary Club. The intent is to use the contest as an annual event to raise funds for a performing arts centre in Langley, the only Lower Mainland without a dedicated performing arts centre. Langley City Mayor Peter Fassbender, the second of the three judges, commented how hard it was for the judges to make their final choices. “We’re all winners because Langley has talent and that’s what this is all about,” he said. “The more we do this, the more the community is going to rise up [and support a venue].” Well-known country singer Aaron Pritchett performed while the judges made their deliberations (and broke the news that the Canucks’ 1-0 advantage had turned into a 1-1 tie going into the second overtime). He offered some advice for all the performers who ranged in age from preteen to senior. “It’s not about winning the competition,” Pritchett said. “It’s about what you do after the competition.” He was only eight when he competed in his first talent show, and would go on to compete in others. Pritchett moved to Langley when he was 15 and remains based in Aldergrove. The musician said the community needs a performing arts venue, the goal of the talent contest. “It’s always great to hear from talent but they need to have obviously an alternate place to perform,” he noted.

For asking the all important question about hardworking moms, seven-year-old Alina Wang is the winner of the Langley Advance Mother’s Day letter contest. My mom is the best mom in Langley because she is sweet, neat and awesome! My mom cleans the house, washes our clothes and cooks meals. Don’t mothers get a reward or at least a break? Well, I think they do. I think my mom is kind and very lovable. Alina Wang, 7 Here’s a selection of other entrants. • My mom is the best mom in Langley because she can solve any problem, from falling in the mud to monsters under the bed. She knows what’s good for me, but I don’t always think it’s fair; even if she is unfair sometimes, I love her with all my heart. Leona Wang, 11 • My mom Christa is very nice to me; she buys me everything I want and she makes my lunch. Tristan, 8 • My mom is the best mom in Langley because… she cooks me great food, drives me to my hockey and ball games. She also buys me lots of stuff. Nolan Silver, 7

Mom would give anything to change a poopy diaper
A stroke has stolen her ability to do tasks people take for granted.
her own business or charity. She thought of running for chief of her First Nations band in the future and got into art school. “On the day of the stoke, I had a really bad headache,” she explained. Her partner Jason came her the bedroom. “I told him to phone 911,” she said. “I felt like my head was exploding.” Buchanan looked in the mirror and saw one side of her face was drooping. She lost her balance and the ability to talk. She tried to run and collapsed at the front door. Buchanan needed three hours of brain surgery. She’s since needed more surgery to repair blood vessels in her brain and this summer a doctor will decide whether there’s another trip to the operating room. But her biggest struggle may turn out to be getting the help she needs. Her physiotherapy has ended. Buchanan said she wants help so she does the right exercises at the right time to maximize her recovery. “I’m not done changing yet, so I don’t know what I’m working with,” she said. Each year about 50,000 Canadians have strokes. Buchanan understands that most stroke victims are seniors but said protocols need to be different for young people. “They need to stop putting limits on people,” she said.
by Heather Colpitts hcolpitts@langleyadvance.com There’s nothing unusual about a young mother breastfeeding while in hospital. But for east Cloverdale’s Monica Buchanan, the breastfeeding was taking place while she was in a coma, having suffered a stroke about two years ago. Her family would bring in her baby for nourishment as the Monica’s brain healed from the trauma. “I was still breastfeeding,” she explained. After three days in a coma, Buchanan woke up paralyzed and was hallucinating. Nothing in her body worked right anymore. “The brain gets bruised from all the pressure,” she explained. She’d give anything to do everyday, mundane activities – change her son’s diaper or grocery shopping, playing guitar or running. Buchanan, 29, is the face of stroke most people never see – young victims. At 27, she was on maternity leave from her job as a construction company office manager and had a three-and-a-half month old baby. The active mom used to rollerblade, exercising her three dogs, and had white-picket fence dreams of a home, family, pets and running
A short time before her stroke, Monica Buchanan took photos with her son (above). Since her stroke (lower right) she has required brain surgery and may need more in the future. (Above right) The young mother used to draw and journal. The lower portion of the photo shows her writing after the stroke. The writing was part of her physiotherapy to help her recover motor and coordination skills. There isn’t one aspect of life that the stroke has not affected for the young mother.

It was the passengers that set off alarm bells for police. On Thursday night, April 28, a tip about a drunk and possibly dangerous driver drew more than the usual police response. Members of the Uniformed Gang Task Force, along with Langley RCMP, pulled over a vehicle near 88th Avenue and 200th Street around 10:30 p.m. “It turned out there were some gang members in the car,” said Cpl. Patrick Davies of the Langley RCMP. While the passengers were believed to be gang members, none were arrested at the scene. The driver was given the usual checks, including a Breathalyzer test, and is facing impaired driving charges. Davies could not say which gang the passengers are allegedly associated with. The incident involved a number of police cars, creating a highly visible spectacle to passing motorists.

Golf
Kim shoots for top scores on LPGA Futures Tour by Troy Landreville sports@langleyadvance.com
At the age of eight, I was fascinated as I watched my parents swing wide to hit small balls that flew straight and far; my love for golf began. I started in on my long relationship with the sport. I convinced my parents to buy me my own set of clubs, which I played with for many hours a day. During that time, Mi Hyun Kim, Rolex Rookie of the Year, greatly inspired me. Not only was she an excellent example because she was a small Asian woman like me. She was also, in my eyes, the most outstanding player. – An excerpt from professional golfer Sue Kim’s letter, encouraging golfers to take part in her invitational tournament at The Redwoods Golf Course. Sue Kim is all grown up. Over the years, the Walnut Grove resident’s amateur golf career has been well documented, locally. She has been a member of the Canadian national team for the past five years. She captured the B.C. junior girls title in 2005 and ’07. In ’08, the then 17-year-old became the first-ever amateur champion of a CN Canadian Women’s tour event. In ’07, ’08, and ’09, Kim was recognized as the Player of the Year with the Canada Score Award, and in ’09 she received Player of the Year with the BC Sports Award.
All this, before Kim hit the age of 20, which is where we find her now – a 20-year-old who turned professional last August. Kim is currently playing on the LPGA Futures Tour, which prepares the world’s best young women professional golfers for a career on the LPGA. In early April, Kim flew to a tourist Mecca for Western Canadians, Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico, for the Santorini Riviera Classic. On a par 73 championship course playing at 6,433 yards, Kim placed 13th with a tournament total one-under par, and a final round of 72. “It wasn’t as much of a struggle as it was more of the putts just didn’t fall [on the final day] as they did on the first day,” Kim told the Langley Advance during a mid-week interview at The Redwoods Golf Course, a place where she has honed her craft through many years of practice. Just as Kim was about to take the next step in her career, tragedy struck. Two weeks before Q-school tournaments, her dad Jong died in a car accident. “Right after my dad passed away, I had to go to a tournament, in Ontario,” Kim recalled. “I think I was too young to accept the whole thing at that time. I wasn’t thinking much about that and I played pretty good at that tournament.” However, since a large part of Kim’s golfing success hinges on utilizing the space between her temples, she understandably found it very difficult to focus.

Braun completes Boston run by Troy Landreville
WE’VE DROPPED OUR RATES
sports@langleyadvance.com
A married Langley mom of two successfully ran the 42.2 kilometre Boston Marathon on April 18. “I survived,” reported Kendra Braun, profiled in the April 8 Langley Advance [Family supports mom’s Beantown run]. “It was a fabulous trip, I absolutely loved the city and it was one of the best experiences of my life.” Braun completed the run in three hours, 27 minutes, just over her goal, but she had to navigate through a huge crowd of runners.
“An ill-timed bathroom break at the start cost me some time, I think,” she said. “I’m not unhappy in the least though – I was fast enough to go back next year.” The weather was great on race day, she said. “I actually got a sunburn on my head during the run if that tells you anything,” Braun said. “I felt pretty good throughout the whole run. It was a bit overwhelming for me with all the noise and people crowded everywhere, both runners and spectators, but otherwise I felt good. “I didn’t even notice my calf strain… I guess that’s adrenaline for you!”

It didn’t take long for the realization of her dad being gone to wash over Kim. “I was physically really burned out and I was having some technical issues with golf,” she said. “Everything just clumped together so I didn’t play very well at Q-school.” Jong was not only a father, but a coach to his daughter. “I started golf because of my parents,” Kim said. “He was with me the whole time that I golfed. He was a mentor.” She is forging ahead with her career, but her father’s memory is omnipresent.

Here's How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
