‘Suffragette’ battles voter apathy

Whonnock resident Bernice Rolls hopes to remind people that voting in the upcoming federal election is important. by Teija Beck

One Maple Ridge citizen is taking to the streets to encourage citizens to vote in the May 2 federal election. If you see a woman in an oldfashioned purple shawl, white blouse and long skirt marching down the street in downtown Maple Ridge, it’s likely Bernice Rolls, a citizen passionate about the importance of voting. Rolls has donned clothing similar to those worn by suffragettes, women advocating for the right to

vote, in the late 1800s and early 1900s. “My message is just to get out and vote,” Rolls said. “Democracy depends on it. Consider areas of the world where it does not exist. Many people do not realize that the right to vote did not come without a struggle,” Rolls said. She pointed out women were not granted the right to vote until 1918, made official in 1920 with the ratification of the nineteenth amendment. Chinese and Indo-Canadians were denied the right to vote until 1947, and Japanese people could not vote until 1948. First Nations citizens had to wait until 1960 before being allowed to cast their ballots. By wearing these historical garments through the streets, Rolls

hopes to remind an increasingly particular candidate.” apathetic public that voting is an The October 2008 election important part of democracy. had the lowest voter turnout in “I’m concerned that the fate of Canadian history, with only 58.8 our country is in the hands of too per cent of voters going to the few people,” Rolls said. “If we do polls. participate, it The 1992 federal will make a difelection was the last ference.” time more than 70 per “My message is to Rolls said cent of voters cast a most people she ballot. get out and vote. meets on her Meanwhile, Rolls Democracy depends walks encourage plans to walk in her on it” her and say they suffragette costume, Bernice Rolls will vote. wielding her sign that “A lot of them reads “Vote,” on nice are grateful and days until the May 2 say they will vote or do advanced election. voting if they’re working [on elec“I’m reminding people that their tion day],” Rolls said. “Lots of vote is important,” Rolls said. people toot their horns and give “Like the hummingbird who me a thumbs up. A dirt bike rider collided with a tree while he was riding with friends on April 20. Due to the nature of his injuries and his location, a plan had to be formed to bring him safely out of the woods to receive medical attention. Ridge Meadows Rick Laing Search and Ridge Meadows S&R Rescue received a call around 8:15 p.m. that their assistance was needed to bring the 49-year-old Pitt Meadows man down Blue Mountain to a waiting ambulance. “We put a team together,” said Rick Laing, head of Ridge Meadows search and rescue, “and was able to access him on one of the dirt bike trails.” This team included 14 members of the local search and rescue, along with six from Coquitlam, and six from Mission. “We thought it was going to be a long stretcher carry,” said Laing. Search and Rescue, along with B.C. Ambulance, Ridge Meadows RCMP, and the Maple Ridge fire department all responded.

Before Maple Ridge residents go to the polls, they’ll have another chance to ask questions of the four local candidates. An all-candidates meeting is set for April 27 at 7 p.m. at the Whonnock Lake Centre. Politicians Mandeep Bhuller, Randy Kamp, Craig Speirs, and Peter Tam will each be allowed to speak, and they will then field questions from the floor. Water, job creation and support for families were some of the big issues of the evening at the April 14 all-candidates meeting in Mission. The four federal election candidates in the Pitt Meadows-Maple Ridge-Mission riding answered pre-chosen questions for two hours in front of a large audience at the Best Western hotel. With Mission recently voting against the proposed Stave Lake P3 project, a public-private partnership that would develop a new water source for Mission and Abbotsford, water was at the forefront of the discussions.

Troy Landreville/TIMES

Mandeep Bhuller spoke with locals at Tuesday’s meet-and-greet at the Maple Ridge library. “This campaign keeps coming back to water,” said Speirs, the candidate for the New Democratic Party, on April 14. “Things like water… they’re too critical to a community’s health to allow management to be given away to a private company.” Incumbent Conservative MP

Randy Kamp took a less firm stance against the proposed Stave River P3 project, vowing instead to respect the decision of the community in this matter. “Whatever the community decides, I’d certainly do everything I can to get the funding for that,” Kamp said.

Liberal candidate Mandeep Bhuller said his government would create a “comprehensive federal water policy” to govern decisions such as the proposed P3 project, while Green Party candidate Peter Tam agreed with Speirs that resources such as water should be excluded from P3 contracts. Some of the main issues across the country this spring are corporate tax rates, balancing the budget and the environment. Both the Liberals and Greens have vowed to cancel the Conservatives’ scheduled corporate tax cuts. The Conservatives have promised to balance the federal budget by 2015, and the NDP aim to balance the budget by 2014-2015. All four of the major parties deal with family issues in their platforms. The Liberals have proposed a $1 billion family care plan to let people take time off work to care for ill or aging relatives. The Conservatives say they will allow income-splitting for families with children under 18, meaning they will pay less tax. Kamp won the riding in the 2008 election with 51.8 per cent of the vote, defeating Speirs’ NDP predecessor Mike Bocking. Canadians go to the polls May 2, with advance polling beginning today, April 22.

SRT student urges her peers to vote Only 44 per cent of eligible voters aged 18 to 24 voted in the 2006 election. by Teija Beck

editorial@mrtimes.com

While many young people remain disengaged from politics, one student at Samuel Roberts Technical secondary school is working to engage her peers in the upcoming federal election. Grade 12 student Kiersten Duncan has organized a movie night at her high school to get her 18-year-old classmates thinking about voting. “I’m just trying to get the point across that yes, it matters, yes, your vote makes a difference, and yes, you should be involved,” Duncan said. Duncan decided to show the movie Swing Vote with Kevin Costner, which is about an average citizen who ends up being the deciding vote in an election. Her interest in the upcoming election has been encouraged by two of her teachers,

history teacher Ralph Wiens and law teacher Wendy Ryall. “Both of them have been really great and have been telling their students to check out the [political] parties, check out what’s going on, go to the candidates meetings, read your paper,” Duncan said. “Mr. Wiens even called Elections Canada about where we could go to vote. He’s checked the birthdates of everyone in our class – if you’re 18, he’s making sure you register to vote.” Duncan said that as a result of these teachers, and her own enthusiasm for politics, some of her friends are becoming interested in the federal election. She hopes the movie, which she plans to show next Thursday in the school library, will help engage even more students. “Really, you have the right to vote, so why not?” Duncan said. “We had to fight for it... and now we’re wasting it.” A study commissioned by Elections Canada showed only 44 per cent of eligible voters aged 18 to 24 voted in the 2006 general election. For more information on voting, visit www. elections.ca.

Phillip Gray said he was outside the library for about 90 minutes on Tuesday afternoon. that he did not have to leave the area, he could continue to talk to people, and the police would not be called, he said he was shaken by the experience and continues to be outraged at this infringement on his right to free speech. “If we can’t talk politics with our fellow citizens on the steps of our public libraries, our democracy is in dire straits in this country,” he said. The area around the library is owned by the District of Maple Ridge, but is managed by Warrington Property Management. Westridge Security looks after that area on behalf of Warrington. The area in question is actually designated as a park in Maple Ridge, and Gray said he thought the guard didn’t know the law on loitering or the law surrounding public parks. Tthe library said they had no issue with Gray protesting outside. “They don’t speak for us,” said librarian Joanne Sleiman, when asked about the security guards. “We saw the person out there the whole time, and didn’t say anything to him.”

C y WATER MAIN FLUSHING

The Lionistic Year is nearly three quarters done and for the Pitt Meadows Pride it has been an eventful year so far. We have accepted three new members into our club, ranging in years from 38 to 80. Margaret Murphy joins us at 80 years young and proves that you are never too old to be of service to your community. We have initiated a new but old fundraiser, a weekly meat draw held at the new Golden Ears Pub next to the Ramada Inn. The event is growing and we are beginning to establish a core of faithful participants every Saturday from 2 – 5 PM. We will be busy again this year at Pitt Meadows Day when we host the annual pancake breakfast and with some luck and decent weather will have Old 99 in the parade again. We have been very busy dispersing our funds and an accounting will be given in the next report. We also had the fortune of receiving approximately $15,000 from BC Gaming this past autumn and since then have received a further $18,000. This is, of course, in addition to the monies we raise through our fundraising events. All the money whether from Gaming or our own efforts is dispersed with the great majority being in our own community. We do, however, have some commitments, nationally and internationally, that we support to the best of our ability without infringing on our community commitments.

The City of Pitt Meadows Public Works Department will be flushing water mains throughout the municipality for approximately twelve weeks beginning March 21, 2011. During this time there may be a temporary drop in water pressure or a noticeable discolouration in tap water. To correct problems with milky water, open the cold tap slightly to bleed air from the water lines. If you experience problems with dirty water, turn on an outside tap and let it run until the water clears. The City thanks residents for their patience during this routine maintenance of the water mains. If there are any questions or concerns please call 604-465-2434. by Amy Judd Phillip Gray, with a sign hanging around his neck, reading ‘MP Randy Kamp still silent on G20 shooting of constituent’, positioned himself outside the Maple Ridge library during the all-candidates meeting on Tuesday. He will now be pursuing a complaint with the Solicitor General, and the Maple Ridge bylaw office, after he said a security guard told him he couldn’t protest outside the library, and he had to move. Gray, 52, was there to raise awareness around what he claimed was the police shooting of his daughter with rubber bullets at last year’s G20 civil rights summit in Toronto. “It started off friendly,” said Gray of that afternoon, but then he said the security guard told him he had to move or he was going to call the police. He said the guard asked him his name, but wouldn’t reveal his own, and kept telling him for about 90 minutes that he was not allowed to be in the area. “I’m familiar with all the laws around picketing,” said Gray. “I’m aware I have access to a place where the public has access to.” John Griffiths, president of Westridge Security, said on a regular patrol of the Maple Ridge Business Centre, the security guard informed Gray of the posted ‘no loitering’ bylaw. “The guard contacted the Westridge Security site supervisor for further direction, who then attended the scene,’ he said. “The site supervisor informed the guard of ‘protester protocol,’” said Griffiths, “and assured the protester that as long as his behaviour remained peaceful, his presence was not a security issue.” Gray said he felt “intimidated by the guard’s behaviour.” Although he confirmed he was later reassured by the guard’s supervisor at Westridge Security

Woman admits to animal cruelty Spaniel was tied up in yard, and a passer-by was worried the dog had been abandoned. by Jen Saltman Postmedia Network, Inc.

The B.C. SPCA is pleased that a Maple Ridge woman has admitted to an animal-cruelty charge involving her dog, Max. Denise Westle pleaded guilty Monday in B.C. Provincial Court in Port Coquitlam to one count of causing an animal to continue to be in distress. She was ordered to pay a $300 fine and a $45 victim surcharge and she is not allowed to possess or care for any animal for three years.

Max’s owner admitted to one count of causing an animal to continue in distress. However, Marcie Moriarty, B.C. SPCA’s general manager of cruelty investigations, said a harsher sentence would have been more appropriate. “While a three-year ban is better than nothing, I feel that in this particular case a longer-term ban was merited,” Moriarty said.

A member of the public called the SPCA in March 2009 after seeing the approximately 10-year-old springer spaniel tied up behind a home in Maple Ridge. The caller was worried the dog had been abandoned. Moriarty said that constables visited Westle several times and repeatedly issued orders to improve Max’s welfare and address his care needs, but the care was not consistent. When Max was finally seized, he suffered from a severe untreated ear infection, deviated digits resulting from overgrown nails and filthy, matted fur. After entering her plea, Westle said the charge was the result of a “misunderstanding.” Max was treated by a veterinarian and was adopted.

Driver falls asleep

A driver was not injured, but his Ford van sustained serious damage, when it appears he fell asleep at the wheel. The 52-year-old was driving on Fern Crescent and 132 Avenue in Maple Ridge at about 1:20 a.m., on Tuesday, April 19, and although he fell asleep, he managed to wake up just before the vehicle hit a tree and rolled over on its side. Ridge Meadows RCMP have now charged the man with driving without due care and attention, after he failed to remain awake at the wheel.

Teenager surrenders

A 19-year-old Maple Ridge man was stopped by police while he was driving on 124th Avenue in Maple Ridge around 3 p.m. but must have been nervous about what was in his car, as he ran away from the scene. Police found a number of bags of marijuana, so they seized both the illegal drugs, other items that are associated to the drug trade, and the vehicle. The man turned himself in to police on Monday, April 8, and Ridge Meadows RCMP are recommending charges of possession of a

Our View

Neighbours can still care It almost seems a bit old-fashioned these days to watch out for your neighbours. We’re each of us often too busy in our own world to pay much attention to what’s going on in the lives of strangers who live across town, across the block, or even across the street. Other than the old organized programs, like Block Watch or Neighbourhood Watch, we tend to be wrapped up in ourselves, making ends meet, dealing with our own loved-ones’ problems. Besides, if we need to interact with others, modern technology gives us tools like Facebook and Twitter to make face-to-face communication much easier, and without the hassles of actually getting to know or understand the needs of the people around us. It didn’t used to be like this. It used to be that being a member of a community meant caring about all the people in the community, even the ones with whom we had only passing acquaintance. Even the ones with whom we rarely crossed paths – maybe just waved or nodded our heads and said “Hi!” or “Howdy!” as we met them on the sidewalk. With the changing societal attitudes that have made distancing ourselves from others – and particularly from others’ problems – the normal circuit through daily living, it’s all the more laudable that a Postmedia newspaper carrier stepped outside this newly defined comfort zone and actually might have saved a local woman’s life. It was 3:30 a.m. when Lawren Mallory noticed the newspapers were piling up on a customer’s doorstep. Having met the resident in the past, he knew it was uncommon for her to take holidays and not cancel the papers. Instead of just shrugging it off, he took action and called for help. When the RCMP found a neighbour with a key, they entered to find the elderly woman had fallen and had been laying there for days. Deservedly so, Mallory is being credited with saving her life. His reaction: He’s just happy the woman is getting care, and said he’s glad he was able to do his part. Some neighbours still care. Kudos. – B.G.

Federal election 2011

Let’s talk about health care Dear Editor,

With a federal election looming, I think it’s critical that we take some time to try to understand how the different political parties feel about health care. The Canada Health Act is the most important federal legislation affecting the provision of health care services in Canada. Although we may associate public health care with Tommy Douglas, this forward-looking piece of legislation was actually hammered out by a coalition of

Ads aid Liberals Dear Editor,

Mr. Ignatieff would like to become prime minister. What a horrid thought. The thought of Mr. Layton becoming the next PM has zero appeal. However, the TV ads slamming Mr. Ignatieff may end up by making him appear as an underdog, and perhaps get him elected on a sympathy vote because it might make people think, let’s give him a try, perhaps he’s not all that bad. Hmmm.

political parties from the left, centre, and right. It has been the cornerstone of our universal health care system that is the envy of many other countries. Unfortunately, under the Conservatives, Ottawa has not been enforcing the Canada Health Act and we see the provision of medically necessary services by for-profit clinics increasing. Harper has frequently remarked that he would like to see more private partners in our health care system. With the Canada Health Act due to expire in 2014, and a governing party unabashedly discussing privatization, we could wind up with a radically different U.S.-style system providing our health care before too long. We need to find out what our Conservative candidate thinks about the lack of enforcement of the Canada Health Act by his governing party. We also need to find out what kind of changes each of our candidates proposes for the next Canada Health Act, due out in 2014.

Sentence young killers as adults Dear Editor,

If psychiatric and psychological assessments suggesting that there is little likelihood of rehabilitation are accurate, the two miscreants who brutally raped and murdered 18year-old Kimberly Proctor last year, deserve to be sentenced as adults. To do less completely defeats the purpose and responsibility of medical professionals’ opinions. Also, a mandatory 10 years before parole eligibility seems a tad light.

Breathalyzer

Disease no excuse Dear Editor,

A recent writer to your letters page blamed chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) as her reason for non-cooperation when in a roadblock, stating she could not blow into the [breathalyzer] machine. There are thousands affected with COPD, which – as the writer correctly identifies – is caused by too many years of cigarettes. However, exhaling is never a result.

Provincial politics

Minimum wage hike imperative I am writing a response to the letter of Denin Ulriksen [Wage change detrimental, March 22 Letters, TIMES]. While Denin was absolutely repulsed to hear of the upcoming wage increase, I am quite satisfied with the news, and believe that this increase is long overdue. While North America has spent years struggling with a recession and many would argue that the timing is wrong, for the province to be frozen with our minimum wage at $8 for so many years is simply wrong as well. Even if there are unfavourable effects of an increase, the effects of keeping our minimum wage the lowest of all in Canada is unfavourable enough, especially with our worsening poverty.

Wrong timing or not, it is right for B.C. to move forward. Given that a large portion of these minimum wage workers – between the ages of 15 and 24 – are tomorrow’s political, cultural, and business leaders, this could be a great investment for the future. This change will give those such as single-parent families, full-time students who continue to work part-time or take out student loans, and also immigrants beginning a new life in Canada stronger, more stable lives and a better chance of moving towards success. That is what we all deserve.

Alzheimer’s disease

Support groups lessen isolation for caregivers Maple Ridge resident Harvey Langridge was the primary caregiver for his wife, who has Alzheimer’s, for more than 10 years by Teija Beck

editorial@mrtimes.com

Maple Ridge resident and retired CP Rail worker Harvey Langridge met the love of his life in 1954 in Nelson, B.C., when he was in the navy. Her name is Tossy, and she and Langridge have been married for more than 50 years, have four children, 10 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. But 15 years ago, at the age of only 60, Tossy started exhibiting signs of memory loss, confusion, depression and anxiety associated with Alzheimer’s disease, and two years later she was formally diagnosed with the condition. “You could’ve talked to her any time in the first five years and you would’ve never known she had Alzheimer’s,” Langridge said. “[My son] didn’t think so because he was living in Prince Rupert at the time and she went up there once, and they never saw any signs of anything being wrong with her. He said ‘no, there’s nothing wrong with mom.’ But I knew.” Because he lived with Tossy and cared for her on a day-to-day basis, Langridge could tell “just by her actions” that something was different about her. Since 2007, Tossy has lived in a care home, but for more than 10 years before that, Langridge was her primary caregiver. He said those early years were very isolating. “For five years I basically had to do it on my own,” Langridge said. “You’re isolated. Almost immediately you don’t see nobody. They’re very uncomfortable with someone who’s got Alzheimer’s. Any sickness, but especially Alzheimer’s.” Langridge’s daily routine changed as Tossy’s condition worsened. Almost immediately she stopped cooking, a task she once enjoyed, and when Langridge took over meal preparations in the household his wife became resentful, ordering him out of her kitchen. She also suffered from sundown syndrome, a period of restlessness that occurs in Alzheimer’s and dementia patients in the late afternoon. Langridge said Tossy would go out into the garden

around 4 p.m. every afternoon and just walk around and around the flower beds and diagonally across the yard, as though she was trying to figure out what was happening to her. Eventually, Langridge got some day-today support in the form of a caseworker, and some emotional support in the form of some sound advice from a health care professional. The Alzheimer’s Society of British Columbia held a seminar in Maple Ridge in 2001, and a nurse who had more than 30 years experience dealing with Alzheimer’s patients gave a talk. “One of the first things she said to us when she started talking to us was, you don’t worry about the disease because you can’t do nothing about it. You treat that person as a person,” Langridge said. “That was the best advice I ever got. It made looking after her so much easier.” After 2002, Langridge began attending weekly support groups at the Maple Ridge senior’s centre, and Tossy began attending a day care program between 8 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Langridge said the best piece of advice he can offer primary caregivers of family members with Alzheimer’s is to seek that support. “Get involved with the meetings,” he said. “That is so important.” Langridge still attends the support groups regularly, and said his own knowledge and experiences now help out other members in the group. He said in his experience, caring for someone with the disease is hardest on men. “My son [lived] down below, and even during the 10 years I looked after her, he would hardly ever come in here and see her,” Langridge said. “And I’d go to the meetings and most of the women say that the boys can’t handle that. It’s really hard on them.” Despite the challenges, Langridge stuck by his wife’s side throughout the 15 years of her illness, and still visits her every day in her care home. For the children, spouses or siblings of people with the disease, the Alzheimer’s Society of B.C. is holding workshops in the community called the Family Caregiver Series. The workshops run from 7 to 9 p.m. on April 28, May 5, 12, 19 and 26 at Greystone Manor, 11657 Ritchie Ave. in Maple Ridge. Space is limited, so participants are urged to contact Dorothy LeClair at 604298-0780 or at dleclair@alzheimerbc.org

Growing confidence in the Fraser Valley’s industrial real estate market adds up to ‘robust’ growth in the sector this year, according to a report released Tuesday. Indicative of the activity is a major new industrial park in Pitt Meadows — which recently opened its first building — that its developers say will eventually be the second-largest industrial park in the province. “We’re seeing a big change from Gerry Kahrmann/Postmedia Network, Inc. ’09 and ’10 when things were John Middleton, senior leasing manager for Onni, on the site of the Golden Ears Business Centre. fairly muted,” Avison Young broker Michael Farrell, who specializes Fraser Valley industrial real estate first 75,000-square-foot building in Fraser Valley industrial propsale transactions from Oct. 1, 2010 and is moving ahead with a second erty sales and leasing, said of their to March 31 (greater than $1 mil110,000-square-foot building. report, its first “sub-market” report lion) totalled $94.67 million. Beekeeping worries Pitt Meadows council Resident wants everyone to be able to keep bee hives if they so choose. by Amy Judd ajudd@mrtimes.com

Some members of Pitt Meadows council are concerned that allowing residents to keep bees in their backyards could result in more visits to the hospital if people have an allergic reaction. “There seems to be so many people that are really allergic to bees,” said Coun. Tracy Miyashita. “I’m just wondering about monitoring that.” Although this is a concern of many, Pitt Meadows resident David van Halderen and Ministry of Agriculture bee expert Jaquie Bunse, said the risk of a sting from a honey bee is low. “I’ve had calls from people saying they’re hav-

guidelines and regulations. “My concern is the anaphylactic response in a child especially,” said Mayor Don MacLean. “If we sign a bylaw saying Pitt Meadows is OK with hives and a child was to die, do you see the liability issue?” he asked. “I see as much danger from wasps or hornets because they’re not managed,” replied Bunse. “Well, that’s like saying I’m not going to quit smoking because I could

get hit by a car,” said MacLean. Van Halderen said the keeping of bees is so regulated that it would be rare for bees to come around and bother people, they are often just looking for a flower, and not a human. Coun. Gwen O’Connell was not convinced. “I am allergic to bees,” she said, “and it’s not a pretend thing. As a child I was rushed to hospital.” She said she could not understand why people in an urban area like Pitt Meadows would want to keep their own bees when they are surrounded by so much farmland. “Perhaps it might be an idea to see if you can work with a farmer and have some of your hives down there,” she said. Most of Pitt Meadows council did not want to say “yes” to the idea, but did not want to say “no” either. The matter will come back to council later in the year.

Learning comes alive at Maple Ridge Elementary

A committee at a local school was created to develop the garden, and they received a lot of support from the outside community. by Teija Beck editorial@mrtimes.com

S

tudents at Maple Ridge Elementary school will soon be spending more time outside their classrooms – but will be learning more than ever. The school celebrated the grand opening of its new garden on April 20 with speeches, songs, and time outdoors enjoying the fresh air. Children in Grades 1 and 2 sang two garden-themed songs to their peers, and school board chair Ken Clarkson recited a poem he wrote for the occasion. Grade 3 teacher Ford Bowden, who initially proposed starting the garden, planted a dogwood tree to applause from the students. With the help of more than 50 teachers, children, parents, grandparents, and members of the community, a bare patch of land on the school grounds was transformed into six garden beds on April 2, with the intention that students gain an outdoor classroom. “We’ve taken those six beds and divided them into 18 plots, and every single one of them has been taken by a classroom,” said Grade 4/5 teacher Ken Bisset, a member of the school’s garden committee.

Teija Beck/TIMES

Maple Ridge Elementary students enjoyed the outdoors at the grand opening of their new school garden on April 20. “Everybody has really bought into it and sees the value of it.” Bisset said the project has received generous support from the community, with people donating plants, tools, building supplies and even a steel container worth more than $2,000 to serve as a garden shed. Bisset said the children will gain educational benefits from the new green space.

“I think for a lot of kids, learning where their food comes from and about healthy food is really important,” he said. “Also too, there’s a lot of research going on as to kids with challenges, special needs, and it’s really therapeutic for them. They can get out there and work through some issues

and learn something while they’re doing it.” Grade 1/2 teacher Sara Oliver, also a member of the school garden committee, said the project has already engaged students throughout the school. “The kids are really taking ownership of it,” Oliver said. “Each classroom has pallet trays, so each class is able to grow some of the plants indoors as a greenhouse and take them out to the garden afterwards.” Oliver said the teachers’ goal is to grow enough vegetables to put on a “salad day” before the end of the school year. Both Oliver and Bisset said the community support has made creating the garden even more meaningful. “It’s amazing, the whole community theme of it,” Bisset said. “It’s nice that it’s the school, but it’s also really nice that we have kids working with parents and grandparents and other people. There’s all kinds of lessons to be learned in that.” Many students were excited about the garden. “When the flowers are grown, we can come out with a book and read when the sunflowers are tall,” said 10-year-old Logan Walker. “It inspires kids to start their own gardens,” said 11-year-old Elaine Nesbitt.

Sharing backyards with neighbours

The CEED Centre is promoting a website matching gardeners with usable land.

Christian Cowley of the CEED Centre – pictured with his family’s pet rooster “Chester” – has donated a portion of arable land on his property to a local gardener.

all it a matchmaking service, of sorts, for gardening enthusiasts. Maple Ridge-based CEED Centre is a partner for the interactive Sharing Backyards website (www. sharingbackyards.com) that matches people without land to garden on with folks possessing spare planting space. “It’s an important program because it gets unused arable land used,” said Christian Cowley, executive director with CEED. “It allows people to put an icon [on the webpage] that they are looking for somewhere to plant, or an icon that they have a place to plant.” Cowley said farming is really about soil productivity, which relates to the microbes found in the ground. “As long as you keep the land worked well with lots of organic matter,” he said, “it will be productive.” Left fallow for too long, some of the soil’s productive capacity can be leached out by the rain, Cowley explained. Visitors can browse the list located on the right side of the website to find their area of choice. The website allows the public to place an icon on a map of Maple Ridge that indicates an offer of planting space or a desire for the use of it. Along with the icon, you can type in a detailed explanation of the terms on which you wish to participate in the sharing program. Personal information is hidden and messages are delivered directly through the site to its users. The CEED Centre’s role is to be the local host of the program. Its task is to find local people to use the site as well as local sponsors, including businesses. Cowley is personally involved. Over the past year, he has donated a plot of land on his Maple Ridge property to Emi Uchida, so she can plant vegetables such as corn, “We would like to see more pumpkins, and squash. land used productively in Cowley would like to see more people involved Maple Ridge to grow more in the program. food.” “We’d like to see more Christian Cowley matches,” he said. “We would like to see more land used productively in Maple Ridge to grow food. One of our goals is to make Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows more food secure, and this is one of the ways we can do that. It’s a tool in the tool chest.” In the last year and a half, there have been about 10 matches, Cowley said, and he’s hoping that number will increase as more awareness about it spreads. The CEED Centre has a sample agreement available so that people interested in the program can use it to help set parameters around sharing their backyard. The Sharing Backyards website was created by LifeCycles, a Victoria-based non-profit dedicated to cultivating awareness and initiating action around food, health, and urban sustainability. The site is now hosted by local partners like the CEED Centre in cities ranging from Salt Lake City, Utah, to Deluth, Minn., to B.C. cities including Maple Ridge, Nelson, Vancouver, and Williams Lake.

Search and rescue had 14 men working ...continued from page A1

But it was decided that search and rescue should trek in to locate the man on foot first. “We thought it would be best for search and rescue to go in on foot because that’s what we do,” said Laing. The injured man’s friends provided assistance in helping locate the

group, he said, and they were able to bring up blankets to keep their friend warm before aid arrived. Laing said they looked at the possibility of using the fire department’s all-terrain vehicle to bring the man down the mountain, but due to his injuries, they thought a stretcher carry would be safer for him. “When you hit a tree like that, you expect neck and spinal injuries,”

said Laing. Search and rescue were able to find the group around 10 p.m., and they started carrying him out at about 11:15 p.m. But due to the distance and the task at hand, they did not reach the waiting ambulance on 256th Street until just before 2 a.m. “It’s very labour intensive,” said Laing.

Maple Ridge Secondary student wrestled at the national championships in memory of his club coach. by Troy Landreville tlandreville@mrtimes.com

Shaimen Bhogal wasn’t planning on going to the Canadian Juvenile Wrestling Championships. But after his club coach, Randeep Sodhi, died unexpectedly, Bhogal felt compelled to wrestle at the April 7 to 10 event in Windsor, Ont. Bhogal, a Grade 10 student at Maple Ridge Secondary, competed in honour of his late coach. “I wrestled for him. I pretty much have known him since I started wrestling — six or seven years. He’s kind of like family to me, a little bit,” he said. “I wasn’t really going to go to nationals and after he passed away a spot opened.” Bhogal won three matches while losing to an Ontario wrestler and two athletes from B.C. to place sixth in the very competitive 54kilogram weight class. “I thought it was a good experience, travelling with the B.C. team to Ontario,” Bhogal said. “I now know how hard I’m going to have to work to win next year.”

Bill McCrae is Bhogal’s coach at MRSS, and coached Sodhi at the 1997 Western Canada Games tournament in Kamloops. “He was the cornerstone of the Indo-Canadian wrestling community,” McCrae said of Sodhi, a twotime national champion who died in March. Sodhi competed, and later coached, through Surrey’s Hargobind Wrestling Club, which he helped his uncle, Satnam Johal, establish in the late 1980s. “Unfortunately, we lost him far too early for his time,” Johal told the TIMES’ sister paper, the Surrey Now. “He drove himself to the hospital with abdominal pain. It turned out it was a pancreas infection and it just got worse. You are never prepared for something like this.” Sodhi’s accomplishments as a wrestler were many. He won a Commonwealth championship, two Canadian senior championships, was an eight-time senior medallist, and also won a Canadian junior championship. Following the death of his longtime coach and mentor, Bhogal decided to make the trip to Windsor, but had very little time to prepare. “I only had a week to train for it, so I just trained for that full week,” Bhogal said. “If I was actually training longer, I think I would have done better.”

Track team brings home medals, sets records Members of the PMSS track team competed in the Province Grand Forza Invitational Meet earlier this month. The Pitt Meadows Marauders track team has something to celebrate after winning a silver and gold medal, and establishing four new records. “The trophy, money, medals are bonus,” said head coach Lance Kraus. “The real benefit is the athletes starting to believe in themselves, coming closer together as a team, and establishing personal bests.” The team has been growing every year, with 22 athletes in 2007, 36 in 2008, 48 in 2009, and now 75 for this season. “We’re excited about our program going into our fourth year,” said Kraus. “Athletes from a variety of team sports are realizing the importance of joining track to work on speed and power to further excel in their team sport.” Fifteen members of the track team participated in the Province Grand Forza Invitational Meet in Richmond at the Oval on April 9. All three PMSS teams, the junior boys, senior girls, and senior boys, successfully qualified for the finals in their divisions.

The Pitt Meadows Marauders track team had a successful showing in Richmond, with two of its teams winning medals. At the end of the day, with more than 55 teams competing, the senior boys placed fifth, the senior girls placed second to win a silver medal, and the junior boys captured gold. Kraus, along with assistant coaches

Kiel Lemmen, Eric Muller, and Charlie MacDonald, said they were proud of the way the athletes presented themselves. “We are starting to see some of the dedicated athletes constantly reach new benchmarks and establish personal

bests,” said Kraus. “Therefore, school records and meet records continue to be established.” He said one of the best things for the athletes is the “great relationship” PMSS has with schools such as MRSS and Thomas Haney, not only for training purposes, but also event participation. “Every year one division from PMSS has taken home the Fraser Valley Championship banner and our number of athletes attending the B.C. championships have increased,” said Kraus. “This year will be no different.” He said while the number of girls taking part has dwindled due to competing sports, the Grade 8 boys and junior boys continue to have a strong showing. “The Gran Forza results are a great example of what can happen to athletes who buy into the program,” added Kraus. The boys who won the gold medal at the event were Michael Brain, Martin Duckhorn, Jacob Gowler, Zach Henry, Sean Hutchinson, Sergio Canbrera, Reid Muller, Adam Lloyd, Cole White, and Charles Chen. The silver medal was won by Emily Gresham, Brianna Morrison, Nicole Foster, Shania Payen, and Olivia Moriconi.

The Smeltzer entourage (above) included Grandpa and Grandma Dillabough, along with six-year-old Kalson Smeltzer and his older sister Chloe, 11, as well as Mom (Kelly) and Dad (Jason), eight-year-old Autumn, and Auntie Karen. Not only did they pack some nice threads, they also brought along a copy of The TIMES newspaper on the trip, as did the Gurm family of Maple Ridge (right). Helps to activate naturally millions of stem cells from our own bone marrow. The increase in stem cells released from the bone marrow into the blood stream have the potential to become other types of tissue cells with specialized function. Stem cells will multiply and are able to become heart cells, liver cells or any other organ. Located everywhere in our body, stem cells are even under our skin layered between the epidermis and dermis. This is why an increase in stem cells under our skin may help to create a more youthful cell that would replenish elastin and collagen and thus may make us look younger. If our bone marrow does not produce enough stem cells this can result in many illnesses, especially a weak heart, kidneys, liver, pancreas, in fact all healthy functions of our body are decreased. Sufficient stem cells in our body have a great potential of self-repair and the ability to rejuvenate tissues. It does not contain live human stem cells as these can only be transplanted by surgery and are subject to immunosuppressant drugs to avoid graft rejection.Naturopathic Doctor summarized his experience in writing after using this Stem Cell Activator: Used for all organ and tissue damage, heart attack damage, osteo-arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, traumatic brain injury, muscular #63 dystrophy, Crohn’s disease, diabetes, lupus, spinal injuries, and other diseases and tissue damage. The results have been very satisfactory to us and to the patients and the time varies with different patients depending on the extremity of the damage.

Acidic Stomach & Acid Reflux

By Dr. C. Hammoud, PhD - Must help or money refunded If your stomach is excessively acidic it means all your cells in your body are acidic. By correcting the excessively acidic stomach you should not need anti-acid pills to control reflux (heartburn). All acidic cells are deprived of oxygen and are the breeding ground for many illnesses including weight gain, diabetes, stress, vascular diseases and cancer. This fact was discovered by Dr. Otto Warburg years ago and he received two Nobel Prizes. You can change your acidic cells in your body by eating 80% alkaline food (vegetables, legumes, fruit). Eat 20% acidic food (bread, noodles, rice, animal derived foods). Full details inside the box. If you don’t want to make major #39 changes in your diet, try Bell Acidic Stomach/Alkaline Balance #39 guaranteed to bring your body to a pH alkaline balance. Free pH test kit inside the box. Dr. C. Everett Koop M.D. states that 68% of all illnesses and deaths are due to the wrong food and the quantity we eat. Unfortunately, virtually nothing about nutrition or natural health products is taught in medical school say many prominent medical doctors in print and on TV including the well known Dr. Andrew Weil M.D. Go on the internet and inform yourself.

SMITH Robert (Bob) Gordon It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Robert (Bob) Gordon Smith on April 13, 2011. Born December 22, 1933 in Marpole, BC he enjoyed life as a boy in a home by the sea in Sechelt. After a time working on the railway and even considering working as a park ranger he joined the bank which led him to Maple Ridge as the manager of the CIBC for 25 years from 1968-1993. After retirement he moved to Whonnock with his wife where they built a beautiful country home. A man of finance for a large part of his life he truly enjoyed a simpler life in the country with some gardens to tend and a well stocked wood shed. He was a carpenter, builder, gardener and a fisherman. He was also a person who was very well grounded so that the ones he cared about always had a strong hand to hold when they needed it. He will be greatly missed by his beloved wife Bernice, sons Brian (Angela) and Eric (Sandra), grand children Brandon, Carly, Devon and Ryan, brother Bill (Bev), step children Sara (Jason) and Ben (Keira) and all of his extended family and friends. A Celebration of His Life will be held at the Whonnock Lake Centre on Friday May 6 at 1pm. Flowers or a donation to the Reifel Bird Sanctuary are welcomed.

Cancer June 21-July 22: Your future looks bright! Optimism, new hopes, friends, wishes, entertainment and light romance come waltzing in. You’ll enjoy the weeks ahead – even more so because your position in the world is on the rise, your ambitions meet luck. Recent warnings about not starting anything new are now over. Sunday to Tuesday feature changes, big finances, commitments, sexual urges, lifestyle changes and health diagnosis, all productively. A partner or competitor isn’t thrilled with you, though, so proceed cautiously – all week. Gentle love might point to the right mate for you midweek! Leo July 23-Aug. 22: The emphasis for the next few weeks will be on ambition, prestige relationships, your status in the world. All looks fairly smooth here, no big highs nor deep lows. Meanwhile, your expansion (usually lucky) in love, legal, intellectual, international and cultural zones continues, especially Friday/Saturday – but work or health demands, or your caution, can interfere. Recent delays end, so charge ahead with new ideas, relationships and projects, especially Sunday to Tuesday, when exciting meetings and prospects arise! Research, financial and sexual commitments are favoured midweek. Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: A mellow, understanding vibe fills the weeks ahead. This promotes gentle love, far travel, intellectual pursuits, legal and cultural affairs, education and publishing. Recent delays dissolve; you no longer need to avoid new projects. Tackle chores Sunday to Tuesday – everything runs smoothly. One caution: the first half of this week might cause a barrier in income zones, or a conflict between sexual desire and ethics. This continues more softly, “workably” the last half. You face different relationships now to 2025, in love, business, with the public – think “enchanted.”

Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections Aries March 21 - April 19: Delays end. You can charge ahead on new fronts. You’ve already entered a brand new world – it is sleek, clear, alive, even nervous, and within this new world, friends, ideas, inventiveness and fun are more important than money. You’re going to have fun Sunday to Tuesday – and for eight years! Your freedom is growing. The shy, quiet, dreamy and elusive friends of the past decade fall away, to be replaced by bright, sharp-minded types. This week, this “peeling off” causes a relationship disappointment. For the month ahead, chase money, seek higher earnings, cultivate new clients. Taurus April 20-May 20: Your energy, charisma and effectiveness rise strongly! The delays of April have ended. Start new projects, see and be seen, tackle chores that previously intimidated you. Despite this surge of energy, one part of you remains contemplative, and is tied in to private matters, quiet planning sessions, government liaisons, etc. Your real “break out” will come in June, when a year of huge luck will commence! Meanwhile, be ambitious Sunday/Monday – luck is with you. Watch legal, ethical factors all week. Change is needed here. Happiness midweek! Retreat, rest Friday/Saturday. Gemini May 21-June 20: Recent delays end, but indecision continues unless you make choices based on gentle love, foreign travel/contacts, culture and intellectual pursuits, which all draw you nicely Sunday to Tuesday. The weeks ahead emphasize rest, contemplation, solitude. Retreat, plan, prepare and fulfil obligations. Contact government agencies, institutions, charitable organizations. Your spiritual side grows – and might become, June onward, a significant relationship factor. If your hopes about a special person are disappointed, alter love goals. Be ambitious Wednesday. “Half happiness” late week.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: A month of mystery, depths, investment, financial manoeuvres, intimacy, commitment, lifestyle changes, health diagnosis and detective work lies ahead. Your life might change. You’re in a powerful and unpredictable relationship trend. So far (early 2011) this might have been more talk than action, but this week and May could cement you in the age-old way. Don’t expect smooth sailing for eight years – but do expect excitement! Whatever occurs this month could “return” in a hugely lucky way June 2011-June 2012. Romance, Sunday-Tuesday. But you must change! “Security” sabotages. Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: The weeks ahead emphasize relationships and opportunities. Be diplomatic, eager and willing. Don’t stubbornly cling to an outmoded position, especially at work or in health areas. Recent delays and indecisiveness end – charge ahead, especially on work and machinery fronts. A co-worker might oppose you, although the opposition’s subtle, might exist “between the lines” in a conversation or email, etc. You’ll win such a struggle, but might lose a friend: i.e., win the battle, lose the war. Be forgiving! Home, rest are both sweet Sunday to Tuesday. Romance, beauty call midweek. Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: You’re in the midst of a lucky, pleasure-filled, scholastic, romantic, creative surge! (January to June.) But the four weeks ahead emphasize work, health, machinery, duties and dependents. Ah, well – it will run smoothly, anyway. (Except, perhaps, for a wee struggle around midweek when life dictates that you must choose between love and money – with money exercising the most influence. This, of course, steers you back toward work.) Recent delays and indecision pass now. Travel, errands and paperwork fill SundayTuesday. Home, midweek. Romance late week – sober, then strong!

Apr. 24 - April 30 Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: Recent delays end. Charge forward with new ventures, relationships and situations. The weeks ahead emphasize romance, speculation, risks, good luck, children, beauty, creativity, pleasure and sports – you’ll ride a winning streak! You face a choice now: on one side are your ambition, your natural personality; on the other lies love. If the love is in your home, you become protective, nurturing. If the love is “outside,” you might unconsciously press it, to end it. Chase money Sunday-Tuesday. Casual friends, talk, travel midweek. Home, security Friday/Saturday – buy it! Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: The weeks ahead accent security, domesticity, rest (hibernation) gardening, nutrition, soul, stomach, Mother Nature. Look over your retirement fund/plans, protect your children and their future, repair the house, etc. And settle back every once in a while to observe what you’re doing – present interests and inclinations hold a clue to where the riches lie in a very lucky period on the horizon – June 2011 to June 2012. That time might bring a new, better home, the end of an oppressive situation, a child, good things! Your energy and charisma rise nicely Sunday to Tuesday. Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: Delays end – so do mistakes, and wrong-headed money decisions. If needed, correct, alter course now. If you need a guide, look at your long-term future, envision it, where you want to be, and reconsider, alter money directions to suit that future. This works best midweek. The Thursday-Saturday period emphasizes a slightly different money trend: your earnings versus your net worth, debts, ability to “grow.” (E.g., do I work for wages or start a business?) You might start something that will grow big in money areas! Retreat early week. Your energy, charisma soar midweek. timstephens@shaw.ca • Reading: 416-686-5014
