Federal election 2011
Kamp revels in Tory majority The Conservative MP for Pitt Meadows-Maple Ridge-Mission was reelected Monday for his fourth term. by Maria Rantanen mrantanen@mrtimes.com
The crowd at Randy Kamp’s campaign office was jubilant as the results came in showing their candidate leading in the Pitt Meadows-Maple Ridge-Mission riding and a majority government for the federal Conservative Party. As the incumbent MP for Pitt MeadowsMaple Ridge-Mission, Kamp told the TIMES he was “excited” about being part of a majority government. If the Conservatives hadn’t won a majority, the alternative would have been something “pretty chaotic,” – “either an unstable minority or a coalition,” he said. “People just wanted some stability,” Kamp added.
With a majority of the polls counted late Monday night, it appeared Kamp had a larger majority than he received in 2008. With 245 out of 258 polls in at press deadline, Kamp had 27,549 votes, NDP candidate Craig Speirs had 17,964 votes, Liberal candidate Mandeep Bhuller had 2,616 votes, and Green candidate Peter Tam had 2,503 votes. On doorsteps while campaigning, Kamp said he heard from many people. While some weren’t necessarily Conservatives, they gave the Tories credit for managing the economy well. Serving his riding and his constituents is a high priority for him, Kamp said. “We really take seriously our responsibility to provide services,” Kamp said. “We put a lot of effort into the constituency end of it...we don’t just do it to get elected.” Kamp wouldn’t speculate on what role he might have in the new Conservative majority government, and he said he’ll do whatever he’s asked to do.
Stay tuned to the online and future print editions of The TIMES for more about the local election results, and the people involved. But having a majority government will make it easier “to move things through,” Kamp said. He cited abolishing the longgun registry within a hundred days and getting the proposed crime bills through the house as two of the priorities the Conservative government will have. While Kamp said there were positive signs during the election for the Conservative Party, “campaigns are always stressful.” Kamp said he expected the Liberals and Bloc Quebecois to retain more seats, and he said the NDP opposition will contain a lot of “rookies,”
“When you get to election day...you create all these scenarios how you could lose,” Kamp told his party faithful. Randy Kamp ran first in 2004, and was re-elected in 2006 and 2008. As an MP, Kamp served as official opposition critic for Fisheries and Oceans on the Pacific Coast, and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans. In the last election, he got just over 50 per cent of the votes from electors in Pitt Meadows, Maple Ridge, and Mission. Kamp grew up in Maple Ridge, graduating from Maple Ridge Secondary in 1971. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in theology but later studied linguistics. He worked as a department store manager, an assistant pastor at Maple Ridge Baptist Church, and as the constituency assistant to Grant McNally. Kamp has been married to his wife Ruth for 35 years, and they have three adult children and seven grandchildren.

No more burning A property owner was burning garden waste on Saturday afternoon, when the flames got away from him and started a small grass fire. Rob Chatton, Pitt Meadows assistant fire chief, said luckily the fire wasn’t too bad, but residents must remember that burning season in the City is now over. “Burning season is March and April,” he said. The fire department attended to the fire at about 12:30 p.m. and had wrapped up everything in about 45 minutes. But with the sunnier weather coming soon, Chatton warned the situation would be worse if the ground were drier so that the fire could spread more quickly. • More online at www.mrtimes.com, click on “News”

Sun shines for 2011 home show Outdoor show fit well with the rest of the event, says organizer Cass Winder. by Maria Rantanen mrantanen@mrtimes.com
The weather was less than cooperative during the setup of the Ridge Meadows Home Show, but when the doors opened to the public, the sun was out. The Ridge Meadows Home Show, featuring its first outdoor show in conjunction with the
indoor exhibitors, a midway, and a psychic fair, welcomed about 20,000 visitors from Friday to Sunday. “We had to go head-to-head with mother nature,” Cass Winder, organizer of the home show, said about the set-up. With 18 hours straight of rain before the show, the grounds where the Outdoor Lifestyle and Leisure Show was situated needed some sand to keep it from being too mucky. “There’s no mud problem that sand can’t solve,” Winder said. The District of Maple Ridge
stepped up to problem-solve at the home show, Winder said, for example, with the sand and other access issues. “This show is so reliant on the support that we receive from so many people,” she elaborated. Winder has been overseeing the home show since 1995, and said every year she learns something new.
This was the first year when the home show held the Outdoor Lifestyle and Leisure Show. Winder said feedback regarding the outdoor show indicated it fits well with the overall show. About 200 community members volunteered at this year’s show, including 100 students.

A man suffered a stab wound after he was attacked as he was out walking with a
female friend on May 1. The 34-year-old was walking in the area of Rosewood Street and Cook Avenue, close to Dewdney Trunk Road and 210th Street at about 10:50 p.m., when an unknown man attacked and stabbed him, before running away. The injured man was taken to hospital by members of the B.C. Ambulance Service, and as of Monday was listed in stable condition with what is believed to be non-life
threatening injuries. The incident is being investigated by the serious crimes unit, and police are asking for anyone who heard or saw the incident to call Ridge Meadows RCMP at 604-4636251. Man attacked, hospitalized by Amy Judd ajudd@mrtimes.com
Local candidates Craig Speirs, Mandeep Bhuller, and Peter Tam lost to Conservative member Randy Kamp. by Amy Judd ajudd@mrtimes.com
The mood was simultaneously jubliant and downcast at the NDP office on Monday night, but federal candidate Craig Speirs had everyone chanting “Craig, Craig, Craig” over and over by the end of his concession speech. “We had such a great time here,” said Speirs of his campaign. “We’ve got something to build on here.” He noted that Conservative candidate Randy Kamp is a “long-standing MP” and received a laugh from the crowd when he put his arm around his wife Diane and said “the riding’s not quite ready yet.” He expressed his congratulations to Kamp, who will now be entering his fourth term as MP for Pitt Meadows-Maple RidgeMission. Speirs, who is also a Maple Ridge councillor, said he has not decided anything about his future yet. Right now he’s just looking forward to getting out in the garden, planting some seeds, and enjoying the summer. He said it was too early for him to decide on a further political course, but described this NDP campaign as one that was “incredibly positive.” “We taught a lot of people what campaigning is all about,” he said. “We’ve really got a base for our future.”
Maria Rantanen/TIMES
NDP candidate Craig Speirs conceded to current MP Randy Kamp on Monday night after Kamp won a fourth term. “At the beginning of our campaign I said ‘what’s the worse that could happen?’ and this is not it.” The crowd clapped and cheered in response. At Peter Tam’s house, the atmosphere was also very supportive, and Tam said that for him, this is just the beginning. “Overall, I’m pretty happy with the campaign,” he told The TIMES. “We’re going to be taking on a lot of Green initiatives,” he said. “We want to get involved with a lot of things locally, so we can be a bit more prominent.”
It was a learning experience for him, he added, noting that the campaign needs to start earlier. “We need to get our fundraising going. The thing with the Green is that we’re very limited in our funding.” Liberal candidate Mandeep Bhuller said it was a “troubling loss” as his supporters watched the Conservatives and NDP grab seat after seat across the country. “Waking up this morning, I had no idea what this evening would bring,” Bhuller said.
A man was laying unconscious on the ground when Mounties arrived at a gas station on Dewdney Trunk Road and 207th Street at about 2:10 a.m. on Sunday. The police were called because a fight had broken out at the gas station, but when they arrived they found a 45-year-old man down with two friends helping. Police were able to find and arrest a 34-year-old man believed responsible. He was held in custody overnight, in anticipation of a court appearance on Monday. The older man was taken to hospital by members of the B.C. Ambulance Service, and police reported Monday he was still in serious condition. Ridge Meadows RCMP’s serious crimes unit and general duties are investigating the assault, and asking for anyone who witnessed the altercation to call Ridge Meadows RCMP at 604-463-6251. To remain anonymous, people can call CrimeStoppers at 1-800222-8477 or leave a TIP online at www.bccrimestoppers.com CrimeStoppers will pay a reward of up to $2,000 for information that leads to an arrest and conviction.

Bylaws
Just want a foot and a half
Dear Editor, I’ve been living in the St. Anne area (formally the ghetto) for about a year now. I’m one of the persons – along with a few others – who initiated the cleaning up of drugs, prostitutes, and homeless in the area. We have done quite the job in the area, and life is a lot better. You don’t worry as much about vagrants when you walk your dogs, and you don’t see hookers at night or people walking up the street with stolen goods. You see parents with their children during the day, going for walks. It’s peaceful at night – no gun shots or sirens blaring at three o’clock in the morning. The reason I’m writing this is, with all the city code violations in this area, the bylaw officer here has nothing better to do but hassle a hard-working person whose car is a
foot and a half on city property. The vehicle has no radiator and needs repairs, and he comes to the door and threatens to give me a ticket, I’m talking a foot and a half. I’m sure glad the district appreciates all the walks at night, and moving the homeless out of the bush at the end of the street, and all the lights I put up in the alleys to light them up at night. Then [the bylaw officer] has the nerve to start getting belligerent with me and downright rude, trying to show his authority towards me. He knows who I am. We’ve seen each other at the meetings for the area. I’m not asking for special treatment. I’m asking for a foot and a half. You’re welcome, Maple Ridge. Jim Foulds, Maple Ridge

Canada’s natural resources
Give back oil and gas industry Dear Editor,
How many people do all of us know who regularly drive to the U.S.A. to fill up their gas tanks with cheap American gas made from Canadian oil. We have a prime minister who is not only the minority prime minister of Canada, but his real job is the covert Grand PoPa of Alberta, and he can hardly wait for oil to be $200 dollars a barrel or more. And still, in Canada – an oil-exporting nation – citizens pay more for our gas
than the people who we export it to. I, for one, am fed up with the constant mismanagement, environmental recklessness, and outright gouging of the Canadian consumer. The federal and provincial governments have absolutely no interest in lower gasoline prices as they both receive windfall tax grabs when gasoline prices rise; 40 per cent of the price of gas is taxes. Do oil companies pay a lot of taxes?
Tourism
Too wet to build water park
Dear Editor, Mr. Moedt suggests a “water park” to attract tourists [Water park will draw in tourists, April 26 Letters, TIMES]. I suggest he give his wet head a shake. Have you looked outside lately? We hardly have the ideal climate to make a water park a viable business venture. Who wants to patronize a water park in a rain forest? Such endeavors have seen dismal failure in areas such as Pitt Meadows, which isn’t that far away from Ruskin. I suggest Mission council re-think its idea that the park will attract anything but mosquitoes. Best to come up with a more inventive suggestion before wasting more taxpayer dollars on a losing proposition. John Turner, Maple Ridge
I seriously doubt it, they pay none in the U.S.A. Do these multi-national companies really have a vested interest in protecting Canada’s environment? The people of Canada should be the major beneficiary of this national treasure. But all I see as a Canadian is $1.35 for a litre gasoline, shoddy, haphazard environmental controls, and a proposed supertanker route 98-158 miles inland up the fourth most dangerous waterway in the world to Kitimat. That can only lead to a world-class disaster. If any political party in the federal election wants my vote, all they would have to do is nationalize the Canadian oil and gas industry, which after all belongs to every Canadian in the first place. I have to question what – other than environmental nightmares – do the people of Canada get out of the exploitation of this valuable nonrenewable Canadian natural resource? Time for a do-over.

Vote must extinguish unfair HST People vote for different reasons. No matter for whom they vote, it is a sad, sad day when they realize they were deliberately lied to by the very people they helped put in power. Twenty-five per cent of eligible voters put this government in power. The other 75 per cent either voted for the other parties or did not vote, and let apathy win the day. Nobody will convince me that 25 per cent of the voting public gives this government a mandate to do what they did last year. I just read an interesting speech by Stephen Harper, Dec. 10, 1996: “This harmonization of the GST, this tax collusion between provincial and federal Liberal governments is not the way to reverse the economic decline of this country.” Don’t let apathy win the day. Vote. I will vote to extinguish the HST, one of the most unfair taxes ever put on a population. Stan Hutchison, Maple Ridge

When they are elected and get into parliament, they suddenly follow the party line, regardless of the views of the constituents they courted to get in power. The party line should not be rigid. I am told that, in caucus, everyone has a voice. I wonder how many of those elected “to represent us” voted the way of their constituents, given the animosity to the HST. The MLAs feel they should be able to spend our tax money on their expenses, and we should not know what the expenses are. This government has run the province like a corporation. Any company would demand an expense statement of its employees. Do we, the people of B.C., deserve anything less?

In much the same way Shakespeare wrote for the masses, The Simpsons has long been known as a humorous look at the average American family, lovable foibles and all. “They both appeal to very different cross sections of society,” said Miller. “In Shakespeare, there’s slapstick and then there’s politics.” MacHomer was the brainchild of Miller about 16 years ago when he was playing “murderer number two” in a production of Macbeth. Now he has toured the show to about 175 cities, and more than half a million people have seen it. 8

Gift shop owner launches video for mothers
After releasing a CD, Ron Kalmakoff released his first video last week paying tribute to all mothers. by Roxanne Hooper rhooper@mrtimes.com

t’s been one hell of a ride this past year for a Maple Ridge shop owner who has dared to relaunch a singing career at the age of 48. It started recently with the release of Little Cricket Gift Gallery owner Ron Kalmakoff’s newest CD, Turn Around, and now the release last week of his first video. My Mother’s Son, one of the songs on his new CD, has been released as a video on YouTube. The timing, Kalmakoff admitted, is no coincidence. It’s very intentional that he released it just ahead of Mother’s Day. “I’ve known many wonderful mother figures over the years and have seen the terrific life long bond between mothers and their children,” he said. He’s particularly excited about the new project, because it’s another first. “I am very proud of this video not only because of my own personal history with the song but I also played a big part in the concept and creation of the video,” he said. “Along with my good friend, Shawn Soucy of Spirit Media, I had a chance to help put the pieces together and made this a reality.” The video can be viewed at http:// www.youtube.com/watch?v=nxZLaiY

I had called Michael early last “There was a comfort level for year asking if he would be me that I forgot about being interested in doing some co-writing with me,” away from the business.” Kalmakoff recounted. RON KALMAKOFF “After being away from my music for more than 10 years – performing and songwriting – I decided in advance that after a couple sessions in the studio, if this was not meant to be, I would know it and decide to put my music behind me,” he told the TIMES. “After a month of writing on my own, I took some of my material to him. Michael thought what I brought him was terrific and the songs were solid with just my writing alone, so we started the process of laying tracks on a few of the tunes.” Kalmakoff claimed he knew as soon as he walked into the recording studio that it was time for him to get back into his Ron Kalmakoff, owner of Little Cricket Gift Gallery, has rekindled his music career. music career again. “There was a comfort level for me that said, a twinkle in his green eyes. Thanks Mom!
Celebrating
A few TIMES readers joined reporter Amy Judd (below) in thanking their mothers for everything they do. Like Judd’s mother Jeniffer, these two other women have always been in their children’s corner and are felt to be heroes. Above is Kelly Ablett, with her daughters Shelby, Tiffany, and Marina. Right is Maple Ridge’s Keilah Gauley with her mother Leesa. “My mom is my hero because every Monday, Thursday, and most weekends she drives me and my sister to baseball – no matter what,” Keilah said. “We are always on time, and she’s always cheering us on.”

Are you a local business? Want clients walking in your door?
Need Cash Fast? Models tried on clothes at Crystal Blu in Maple Ridge ahead of the SPECC-tacular fashion show on May 7.
Introducing

Christine Olorenshaw photo
Fashions shown with a difference SPECC-tacular Productions will showcase spring fashions, set to Broadway music. by Amy Judd ajudd@mrtimes.com
This is not your typical fashion show. There will be models, beautiful clothes, and glitz and glamour. But there will also be a lot more. SPECC-tacular Productions is putting on a show to raise money for its upcoming theatre season, with a preview of its Christmas show, A Christmas Carol. “The only way we can put on a show is if we make money in our last show or get money elsewhere,”
#!"

said fashion show coordinator Christine Olorenshaw. Combining fashion with SPECCtacular, singers will sing songs from Broadway musicals, as well. “It’s a little different from a straightforward fashion show,” said Olorenshaw. The show includes all local talent, with models and singers from the community, dancers from the Maple Ridge Dance Circle, and fashions from local stores including Crystal Blu, Mico’s Swimwear, Winners, and Creekside Fashions in Port Coquitlam. Models will wear never-beforeseen pieces from Joseph Ripkoff’s fashion line at Crystal Blu – he is the official designer for the Miss America pageants. There will be door prizes and a
traditional English cream tea. Along with new clothes and a snippet from A Christmas Carol, the show will also preview SPECC-tacular’s 2012 season. The dramatists are hoping to stage the musical favourite Oliver! next year. “We just want to do musicals,” laughed Olorenshaw. Tickets for the May 7 show, including tea and entertainment, are $20. The show runs from 1 to 4 p.m. at St. Andrews Church Hall, 22165 Dewdney Trunk Rd. Tickets can be brought through any of the fashion stores in the show, at the door, or by calling 604-465-1694. “It gives a chance for the local stores to promote themselves as well,” said Olorenshaw. “It’s what’s in the future for theatre, and what’s in the future for fashion.”

Best meet results Led by Dane Simmons, the Haney Seahorse Swim Club won two bronze medals in late April on the Island. Other team members Reeghan and Kaelen Osmond, and Jordan Morford, added nine more top-eight finishes, one Western qualifying time, and eight age group national qualifying times at the provincial AAA short-course meet. This group will now be travelling to Montreal in July for the national championships. The provincial AA team of Kylie Morford, Victoria Good, Julia Cielecka, Julia Rosec, Amanda Hollyday, and Zak Osmond captured one silver medal, from Good, 14 top-eight finishes, and Rosec earned her AAA qualifying time. Good and Osmond also won medals at the Lower Mainland Regional Swimming Championships in Delta, and have qualified for the Kelowna AA meet in June. New additions to the competitive team, Kennedy Badminton, Cole Tomson, and Missy Williams have recently qualified for the regional meets as well. Head coach Mike Kirkness and assistant coach Kiely Cunningham said they expect big things from the swimmers in the upcoming meets. This past weekend, the club attended the Surrey Meet. In addition to the recent competition, the swimmers also held a swim-a-thon to raise money. All proceeds went to Covenant House, and they managed to raise $2,534. The Haney Seahorse swim club is a local club that offers a comprehensive competitive swim program as well as fitness for children and masters swimmers. All ages and levels of ability are welcome to join the club. All coaches are members of the Canadian Swim Coaches Association, and as this is a year-round club, members are welcome to join throughout the year.

HOTTEST JOBS
TRUTH IN ''EMPLOYMENT'' ADVERTISING Postmedia Community Publishing makes every effort to ensure you are responding to a reputable and legitimate job opportunity. If you suspect that an ad to which you have responded is misleading, here are some hints to remember. Legitimate employers do not ask for money as part of the application process; do not send money; do not give any credit card information; or call a 900 number in order to respond to an employment ad. Job opportunity ads are salary based and do not require an investment. If you have responded to an ad which you believe to be misleading please call the Better Business Bureau at 604-682-2711, Monday to Friday, 9am - 3pm or email inquiries@bbbvan.org and they will investigate.
