IT doesn’t take much more than a glance around the Lower Mainland to see that Canucks fever has taken over.

And a group of Deep Cove boys may have just come up with an unofficial theme song for the postseason. The “Canucks Rule” Youtube song, a parody of Cee Lo Green’s catchy pop single “F*** You,” has surpassed 205,000 hits in the one week since it’s been posted. “Well I’m sorry, that we’re image Youtube such an all-star team, but that don’t mean we don’t have to MIKE Russell sings “Canucks Rule,” a Youtube parody of a Cee Lo Green pop try. one home. “It would be my preference that we go ahead with the arts precinct . . . in order to share costs and administrative costs,” said Clark, adding that while the changes to the project are positive, they’re not enough. “I still think, however, it’s too massive as it is. If that means we have to cut the museum and not have that density bonus, then that’s what I’m supporting,” he said. This is the second time this year the company has come before council to discuss this project, with the changes designed to reflect previous concerns raised by councillors. The changes also reduced the height of the site’s groundfloor podium to 61 feet from 74 feet. A 50-foot wall would face Stella Jo Dean Plaza, which the developer said would be built as a green wall to reduce the impact. “I have to say I find the impact on Stella Jo Dean park unacceptable, absolutely unacceptable,” said Coun. Pam Bookham. “It’s just not going to work as a park.” The comments from council

Mary Trentadue saying she was underwhelmed and felt it didn’t fit the character of Lonsdale. But Mayor Darrell Mussatto said they may need the density for the extra money it brings. “We have lots of wants on our list,” he said, listing the museum and a new Harry Jerome recreation centre. “So it may be that we have to take some density there. I don’t know.”

Most councillors also said they’d prefer to see a taller twotower design instead of three towers, but that would require an OCP amendment to go above the 180-foot height limit, which Onni vice-president of development Beau Jarvis said the company doesn’t want to do. “All the feedback we’ve received from neighbours to date is don’t amend the OCP heights,” he said after the meeting.

He said the density was in line with other developments across the region, and said he felt they had made “good strides” on the concerns raised to date. Council voted to defer the decision to move the towers to public hearing until after a meeting next week, when council will discuss two studies the museum commissioned as part of a visioning exercise. Museum director Nancy Kirkpatrick said three possible locations were identified in the studies — Harry Jerome recreation centre, the waterfront and the current site — and that the Lonsdale and 14th site fits best with their vision. It would also allow them to co-ordinate activities with the library and city hall, she said. Onni and the museum have also commissioned a study on the size needed for the museum and the operating budget. The latest development proposal pegged the museum at 10,000 square feet, half of what was previously allotted and not enough to consolidate their collection, according to Kirkpatrick. A motion to send the project to public hearing will be discussed further at the next council meeting.

voters who come from recent immigrant backgrounds, said Noormohamed. “Them coming out to vote has a huge impact on the outcome.” According to the last census, more than 39,000 people living in the North Vancouver riding are immigrants. Chinese, Iranians and Koreans make up the largest groups of visible minorities. More than 32,000 people list languages other than French and English as their mother tongue. In West Vancouver, immigrants also make up about a quarter of the population. Targeting immigrant and ethnic votes is “a big deal this time” among both Liberals and Tories, said Greg Lyle, a pollster and political strategist with Innovative Research Group, who is currently conducting polling for Maclean’s magazine. In the past, immigrant voters were often perceived as being in the Liberal camp, partly because of the party’s immigration policies and the fact the Liberals were in power when many of the new voters arrived in Canada. But that’s now changing, said Lyle. “For the past five years, (Immigration Minister) Jason Kenney’s been on a mission to reach out to those voters, especially those that are in target ridings.” These days, Conservatives have “made an effort to get to know these communities,” said Lyle. “They show up at events. They are aware of their issues to a degree they weren’t before.” It’s perhaps no surprise, then, that Kenny made an appearance with North Vancouver Tory candidate Andrew Saxton early in the campaign, meeting with voters along Lonsdale Avenue. West Vancouver Conservative candidate John Weston said he’s made a point of trying to understand and respond to the concerns of immigrant communities in his riding. This January, for instance, a group of volunteers helped Weston — who also speaks Mandarin — host the first ever Chinese New Year celebration NEWS photo Cindy Goodman in West Vancouver, in recognition of the growing MAGAZINES published in Farsi sit on the table of a Chinese community there. Weston said many Chinese Lonsdale Avenue coffee and Korean voters in his riding shop in North Vancouver. are also businesspeople who “want low taxes and a positive environment for investment.” Both Noormohamed and West Vancouver Liberal candidate Dan Veniez said many immigrant voters are concerned about the same things that other voters are. “Health care, education, (whether) their children are going to have a better life,” said Noormohamed. “There are some issues that resonate across the board.” But there are also issues of particular concern to immigrant families, he said, including immigration policies on family reunification, recognition of foreign credentials and helping to get Canadian work experience. “That’s something this government has dropped the ball on,” said Noormohamed, who as the son of immigrants witnessed his own father’s struggles to get his architectural credentials recognized in Canada. Such issues “have a huge impact on Iranian and Filipino communities in North Vancouver,” he said. Veniez said he’s not making any special appeals to immigrant voters. “We’re not micro-targeting,” he said. “That’s not who I am and what I am.” “I was asked by (a member of one community on the North Shore), ‘What will you do for us?’” he said. “My response is to form a good government you can trust.” For Keighobad Esmaeilpour, president of the Civic Association of Iranian Canadians, the important things is that recent immigrants get out to vote. Esmaeilpour and other Iranian Canadians founded the See Some page 5

HETHER you agree with it or not, Vancouver’s decision this week to quash the megacasino proposed for the B.C. Place site is a victory for citizen activism, and offers a powerful argument for democratic reform at higher levels of government. In turning down the 74,000-squaremetre entertainment complex, city council — for good or ill — put the concerns of ordinary people ahead of those voiced by the project’s corporate and government backers. The move shows that at the municipal level at least, the ballot can still trump the dollar — a fact underscored recently in West Vancouver, when the towers proposed for the Safeway site were killed on outcry from ordinary residents. It’s hard to imagine a similar outcome at the provincial level. Over the past

decade, Victoria has repeatedly shown that it is willing to put the interests of big business ahead of all other considerations, whether it be in gaming, aquaculture, highway expansion, power generation or other areas. The difference in attitude is a product of differing systems. At the community level, citizens have virtually the same access to council as business leaders, and election funding rules give no clear edge to big organizations. When it comes to the province, access for regular people is severely limited and campaign funding is dominated by large interests. Long-overdue changes to election finance laws and a shift towards proportional representation might help restore the balance. Both are issues that should figure prominently, once again, in B.C.’s next election.

Every single vote is a piece of the whole Drinking, driving and

Dear Editor: Regarding your April 10 election story, Young Voters Cool About Politics: How interesting it is to see two extremely opposed attitudes toward politics represented by two Capilano University students. On the one hand, we’ve a young person who doesn’t appear to want to have very much to do with politics at all. On the other, we’ve another student who appears to live and to breathe the very stuff. I must say that the former, somewhat common attitude (and not just among the youth) raises some concern. To squander one’s opportunity to engage in a democratic system of governance is to be but an idle, non-attentive spectator of a force which permeates everyone’s lives. I wonder about those who are content to live as bits of seaweed, getting tossed around by waves that they’ve little (or no) understanding of. It does no good to follow, “There’s no party that stands out for me,” with, “what each party stands for . . . I have no idea,” and, “I really

don’t think about it.” Society is an interconnected organism that thrives when its constituents are attentive to, and communicate with one another. At the very least, and speaking as a young person myself, I should say that one ought to be able to identify at least some issues that one feels strongly about, and confident enough to speak about to a stranger. Let us have some more of that! I’d also like to add that if one chooses not to vote, for whatever reason, then one has no right to complain, because one’s already gone and forfeited a significant part of one’s power to effect change. That power, that one vote, when added to everyone else’s does indeed form the most decisive factor of all: the popular vote. Every single vote is a piece of the whole, an opportunity to engage. It’s not just the numbers, but the thought that goes into being one, too. To suggest that politics deserves a greater focus in high school sounds to me like a pretty good idea. It would be to society’s benefit for its young

graduates to be better equipped to politically reason, and to understand why being informed and active is of critical importance. Still, the onus is on a person to take interest. I know that there are a great many out there with important opinions, who do very little to spark dialogue. To them I say, speak up! You are significant. Conversations inspire. $300M for the status quo

Dear Editor: Time and time again the people we hire to run our country and look after our money have proved themselves unequal to the task. So, next month, after an election we did not want, and a choice which wasn’t a choice, and when we are 300 million dollars poorer, will we notice any difference? I doubt it. Jas Derham-Reid West Vancouver

What’s black, with a dorsal fin and a tail like a whale’s? Dear Editor: Last Friday around 4 p.m. at the foreshore at the end of Fell Street close to the auto mall, there was a marine creature sighting. It was not a seal. The black creature showed a triangle-like pyramid fin and a big tail shaped similar to that of a whale.

CONTACT US

I moved to North Vancouver two years ago, so I do not know what marine creatures live in this area. For longtime North Shore residents this sighting might not be something new. I know people see seals in that area, and I have seen them twice. Sometimes people throw balls into the sea and their

dogs swim and fetch them. Isn’t it dangerous for the dog if such a big sea creature lives there? Keiko Koizumi North Vancouver (Editor: Pacific white-sided dolphins were off Bowen Island last week. A killer whale is possible, but unlikely.)

technicalities

Dear Editor: After reading the April 13 page 1 story in the North Shore News about drunk drivers getting away from the consequences of their actions on a technicality whilst allegedly driving in North Vancouver, I will be calling my MLA and reminding her that it’s part of her job to make sure that the RCMP have the training to do their job. Correctly. Or at least ensure that, when caught, the full weight of the laws of B.C. comes upon these drunk drivers without exceptions. David Brownell North Vancouver (Editor: It is important to remember that police can only recommend charges. The Crown accepts or rejects them and, on occasion, arranges plea bargains. Such decisions are mostly based on the likelihood of conviction. Other factors might be court overload and costs.)

Dix needs vote split to upset ‘Jersey Girl’

BOTH of our major political parties have now completed their leadership changes, and the outcomes could not be more starkly different.

The NDP has opted to make a sharp left turn, and now are about to face off against a populist premier. Adrian Dix and Christy Clark are polar opposites in style, image and philosophy. Clark is charismatic and telegenic, while Dix is dour and not very good on television. Clark is perky and enthusiastic, and Dix is relentlessly serious and even grim at times. Clark is pro-business, with a populist touch. Dix is a class warrior, who sees electoral success occurring only if he can fashion a great divide and capture one side of it. I’ve known both Clark and Dix for more than 20 years, and can attest their public images aren’t always accurate. Dix, for example, actually does a have good sense of humour but prefers to hide it in public

View from the Ledge Keith Baldrey

life, while Clark, for all her communications savvy, can also be shrill and too aggressive. Nevertheless, each of them has a style and image that is well grounded in the public mind, Clark more so because she’s better known. In the past week, the Province newspaper has captured what could very well be the themes of the next election campaign. First, the paper showed a beaming Christy Clark on its cover, clad in a Vancouver Canucks jersey and holding up a hockey stick.

Jersey Girl was the headline in large-type. The day after Dix’s win at the NDP leadership convention, the Province cover showed a victorious Dix with the headline Left Turn. Clark could not have bought better publicity. The cover showed exactly what the NDP is up against. Something tells me putting Dix in the same jersey and having him smile at the camera simply won’t have the same effect. And the “left turn” reference neatly captures a deliberate shift by the NDP, and it’s one that has the B.C. Liberals rubbing their hands in glee. While Clark has a decided edge over Dix in communications, style and image, the NDP’s decision to push to the left narrows the number of voters who will vote for the party. Dix, of course, sees this in a different way. He argues that adhering to traditional democratic socialistic values will energize the party and convince

its core supporters to come out and vote in greater numbers. He may well be correct, but I see little evidence to support that thesis. Dix argues that 1.5 million voters stayed home in the last election and therefore need motivation to vote, but why he thinks there are a huge number of disaffected socialists out there is beyond me. Dix and his supporters point to the 1996 election win as proof that waging class warfare is a successful formula. But that misses the main reason why the NDP won that year: 15 per cent of the vote that mostly would have gone to the B.C. Liberals went to two other

political parties, the Reform Party and the Progressive Democratic Alliance. The NDP now desperately needs the B.C. Conservative Party, led by former longtime MP John Cummins, to grow in popularity. If the B.C. Conservatives can get to double-digits in terms of the popular vote come the next election, then Dix’s strategy may well prove to be successful. But Cummins’ party is a long way from establishing a credible presence in enough areas of the province to be a threat to the B.C. Liberals. First of all, he’s not that well known outside federal political circles

and his own community of Delta. As well, he needs to find good candidates in a lot of swing ridings, where the gap between the NDP and the B.C. Liberals has been relatively narrow and where a strong Conservative presence can pave the way for an NDP win. Cummins may well get there, but if he doesn’t provide that right-wing split, the NDP’s decision to push to the left may seal its doom. So it’s Jersey Girl versus Left Turn. Let the fun begin. Council OKs Wetmore seniors’ residence Niamh Scallan

nscallan@nsnews.com

THE proposal to build a seven-storey seniors’ residence on West Vancouver’s former

Wetmore Motors site moved seamlessly through Monday’s council meeting. District unanimously development

councillors passed the proposal to

its final reading, applauding Vancouver-based developer Pacific Arbour Retirement Communities and their progress with the proposal since it was first introduced to council in November 2004. “It’sreallytherightproject,”

Coun. Michael Smith said. “I think it meets the community need and I think it’s being done by the right developer. Council is very proud to be supporting this very excellent project.” “I think the developers really went out of the way to go

out and engage people,” Coun. Bill Soprovich added, referring to the numerous adjustments to the original proposal — including the addition of 40 public parking spaces, collaborating on landscaping plans with neighbouring Tudor

Gardens residents, and design changes to the building’s top two floors to reduce height impact. “I’m pleased to see where it is this evening,” said Smith. Council’s support comes just two weeks after a public hearing when approximately 20 West Vancouver residents spoke to council in support of the proposed residence and few residents expressed concerns. The Pacific Arbour proposal calls for 130 rental suites, retail space, a Capilano University Eldercollege campus, more public parking spaces and $500,000 put towards the revamping of John Richardson Park, the boundaries of which will be affected by the building. The proposal — requiring amendments to West Vancouver’s official community plan and zoning bylaws — will return to council for adoption at a future council meeting.

WV marine fuel dock may reopen Niamh Scallan nscallan@nsnews.com

THE Fisherman’s Cove fuel pumps, closed for the last three years, may soon be open for business again following a District of West Vancouver agreement with former fuel provider Esso.

“We are hoping that fuel again will be flowing in Fisherman’s Cove sometime during the summer,” said Bob Sokol, director of lands, planning and permits, during an April 18 council meeting. In a staff report, Gordon Reid, the district’s land and property agent, stated that release paperwork with Esso had been completed for the fuel docks in Fisherman’s Cove. Esso, the long-time fuel provider in the popular boating hub, stopped providing fuel in 2008 after the company’s decision to shut down all of its marine operations in Western Canada. Following the operation shutdown, Bruce Falkin — the man contracted by Esso to provide fuel — requested permission to run the facility independently. In 2009, the district suggested it could release Esso from its sublease on the water lot in Fisherman’s Cove — subject to a number of conditions — and conducted an environmental assessment on the area. After “extensive negotiations,” Esso was officially released from its sublease April 1. District staff are waiting on Falkin, identified as the potential fuel operator for the site, to apply for and receive all necessary permits for the facility before fuel can flow again.

‘Buy this couch for five magic beans’ SO this is the second instalment in what appears to be turning into a series on mildly frightening couches.

In the first episode, which ran about six weeks ago, we learned about the sofa that is afflicted with the all-toocommon problem of being haunted by the spirits of the dead. This week, we hear about the time I accidentally bought a couch from a mysterious stranger who almost definitely didn’t own it. One summer in the late 1990s, when I was an undergraduate student in Toronto, two friends of mine and I set out in search of an apartment. Having, as we did, the resources and worldly experience of university students, we quickly found the ugliest 1,200 square feet in the city and moved into them. The apartment in question had been designed and decorated in that inexplicable period last century when all of humanity collectively lost its sense of taste. Here’s the conversation that took place circa 1974: All of humanity: “Well, we’re all dressed like vomit-

coloured pirates. Now, what should we do to the world’s interior spaces?” The inventor of wallboard: “Let’s vanquish the sun!” Appliance makers: “We should base our colour palette on mucus.” The world’s upholsterers: “I think we should invent patterns so hideous they could drive God from earth.” All of humanity: “These are all good ideas. Now, who likes comb-overs?” This view is in hindsight, of course. As students, we had relatively low standards; any home that was fully enclosed and not actively on fire would more or less meet our needs. After a day of scrubbing

and vacuuming and decorating, we stood together in the living room and admired our work. The space, now clean and elegantly appointed with a beer coaster collection, several street signs of legally questionable origin and that Bob Marley poster that’s issued in university admissions packages, didn’t look half bad. From what we could see, anyway. In addition to beauty, the people of the 1970s, it seems, also despised windows. Those openings they did allow were designed to be too small for modestly sized objects, such as photons, to get through. This fact, combined with the wall panelling that was as close to black as possible while still being tasteless and the astonishingly stubborn smoke stains on the ceiling — from the previous tenant, who, as far as we could tell, had been a volcano of some kind — made it difficult in many parts of the apartment to see smaller details such as the walls or each other. We all agreed that the final touch needed, the thing that would tie it all together nicely, was furniture. Seating, specifically, as it would allow us See Best page 10

INQUIRING REPORTER TALK of a potential coalition government has been a constant theme this election, with Conservative leader Stephen Harper claiming the opposition plan to form a coalition — which Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff denies. However, parliamentary democracy does allow for a party that didn’t win the most seats to form government with the support of the House of Commons. But would Canadians support that government? Find us on Facebook and tell us what you think, or add your comment to Inquiring Reporter at www.nsnews. com. — Tessa Holloway

Jessica McIlroy North Vancouver My personal opinion is yes, I think they should. That seems like the way the democratic system would work.

Should the party with the most seats always form a minority government?

Morid Goodarzi North Vancouver With any government, they have to work together, all of the parties.

Setareh Doustdar North Vancouver I’d prefer a majority. I don’t know much about politics, but I think a majority is always better. . . . Otherwise it’s chaos.

Hamid Golfar North Vancouver I can see no problems with coalitions. At least a coalition is representative of 70 per cent or 60 per cent of Canadians . . . usually a party has only 30 or 40 per cent.

Frank Oschefski Port Moody Yes. I guess they had the most votes so they should form government.

So it came to pass that I — and here, believe it or not, I approach my point — was dispatched to find a couch. With no Internet to speak of and little interest in newspapers, I just kind of wandered out into the nieghbourhood and started looking. I quickly established that stores, which were asking sums See We page 11

well into the double digits, were out of our price range. Then I came across a church sale. Or what I took to be a church sale, anyway. And there, among the assorted items, I saw a piece of furniture that exactly met our criteria: a) it was a couch; and b) it was there. With the kind of canny street sense that comes from a year studying cinema and English literature, I quickly identified the gentleman who appeared to be in charge of said couch — marked by the fact he was sitting on it — and asked him how much he wanted. After what was in retrospect a telling pause, he said: “$20.” That seemed like a good deal, so I paid him and asked him if he had a vehicle to transport it. His answer made me suddenly re-evaluate my situation. In the wake of this experience I developed a mental checklist, which I resolved to apply in future before entering into any transaction at a suspected church sale. Is the church, on second glance, actually open? Does the person selling you the item in any way resemble Capt. High Liner after a lab explosion or enormous surprise? Is he actually selling anything? Can you see everyone that person is talking to? And does he, in place of a truck, offer you a shopping cart to take your new couch home? After what was probably the reality of the situation sank in, I decided it would be improper to back out of the deal, so I did what any reasonably minded 18-year-old would

Show explores mythology of skirt Niamh Scallan

nscallan@nsnews.com

IN Greek mythology, the goddess Baubo, disguised as an old servant, helps goddess of agriculture Demeter grieve the loss of her daughter.

The sexually-liberated, jesting Baubo brings Demeter out of depression and into happiness by lifting her skirt — evoking laughter and pleasure in the once-mourning soul. It’s the power of the skirt — as revealed by the mythical Baubo — that inspired Vancouver-based artists Eleanor Hannan and Elizabeth Dancoes to pursue a series of art projects focused on the symbolism of the ultra-feminine garment. “We were reading in myth and storytelling, the powers of a woman with her skirt raised,” Hannan said. “It’s really the core of everything because it has to do with the creation of life. When you’re raising the skirt, you’re exposing the source of all life.” Hannan and Dancoes first began collaborating on their skirt-raising artwork more than 10 years ago. Their work’s

depiction of women raising their skirts is based on the ancient gesture known as Ana Suromai, translated as “to raise the skirt.” According to Hannan, the gesture — appearing in fables when mysterious things were hidden under a woman’s skirt — was an “incitement to transformation . . . it encouraged laughterasaconduittorenewal.” The famous image of Marilyn Monroe standing over a subway grate with her skirt billowing around her is one example of Ana Suromai in recent history. For Hannan, the deeply evocative, history-rich gesture has provided the artistic duo with great liberties to explore femininity and emotion in their work. “It’s funny, interesting, imaginatively provocative,” Hannan said. “I’ve always loved the gesture of a figure in a skirt . . . we looked at it as symbolic, mythical, magical power of feminine spirit that’s in every being.” This year, the artists have put together the show 1001 Funny Things You Can Do With a Skirt, currently on display at the Seymour Art Gallery. The display showcases a series of short stories, written in poetic form by Dancoes that intertwine

Karen’s Exciting Seven Step Makeover

“I had always secretly wished I could be a participant on “What Not To Wear”but this experience was even better. It accomplished everything I had hoped for and has given me a renewed energy to take other risks in my life.” 1 A Style Assessment and Closet Cleaning with Image Strategist Patti Morrison determined Karen’s Personal Style, reviewed her current wardrobe and set an action plan. 2 Cheryl Hardy of Alan

James Hair Design cut and colored Karen’s hair into an easy to manage current style. Patti showed Karen how to apply light tasteful makeup to enhance her look.

3 Karen is an experienced cyclist and James at Obsession Bikes discussed ways to monitor and enhance her fitness performance as well as what to wear while cycling. 4 Dr. Bert Lee of Seymour Dental Center in Parkgate Village prepared Karen’s teeth and gave her at-home bleaching instructions to give her a fresh and youthful white smile. 5 Patti took Karen to BJs

FILM ATLAS SHRUGGED LOOKS FOR AN AUDIENCE IT CAN CALL ITS OWN

Neo-cons capitalize on Rand Julie Crawford

Contributing Writer ■ Atlas Shrugged: Part 1. Directed by Paul Johansson. Starring Taylor Schilling, Grant Bowler and Matthew Marsden. This is the true story about a book written more than a half-century ago, and how a small-budget movie and a toilet economy helped propel it back onto the best-seller list. Ayn Rand’s Atlas Shrugged was published decades ago, in 1957, but part one of the magnum opus movie opened last week in the U.S., riding on a tidal wave of right-wing conservative support. Thanks to the movie buzz and talkshow chat references (Stephen photo submitted Colbert, Glenn Beck, Jon NEO-CONSERVATIVES lapping up Ayn Rand’s Atlas Shrugged all over again. FILM

Neo-cons looking to spread the gospel From page 18

connecting our community

heartened by the $1.6 million opening weekend figure when compared to the reported $10 million production cost. Then there’s the complexity of Rand’s story. Part one is a dry-as-dust set up for the next two instalments, should they make it to screen. The heroine of the book and the film is Dagny Taggart (Taylor Schilling), both the brains and the beauty behind Taggart Transcontinental, whose railways are the last viable mode of transport now that gas has reached $37.50 per gallon. She battles with her brother (Matthew Marsden) and his Washington cronies, and finds a kindred spirit in Henry Rearden (Aussie Grant Bowler, a staple on HBO’s True Blood) who shares her passion for profit and her contempt for people with “stupid altruistic urges.” It’s not first-date material — unless you find the concept of mixed capitalism vs. pure capitalism and economic efficiency sexy. Meanwhile, society’s most innovative and influential citizens are disappearing, leaving behind a calling card: “Who is John Galt?” The phrase has become a sort of secret code, identifying members of the tax-averse faithful. You can read all about Ayn Rand on survivalist chatboards, right under ads that read, “how to accessorize your shotgun.” As one contributor wrote: “the bible first, Atlas Shrugged second” (this despite the fact Rand rejected religion in all forms). The official movie website urges audiences to spread the gospel outside American borders. So if you’re really, really mad at the government, exercise your right to the “virtue of selfishness” and demand that Atlas Shrugged come to your town: your local billionaires will thank you.

Even the paintings hung on the wall are part of the festival. “As long as you’ve got something to show people, you can audition.” Even one of his own works, a collaboration with a songwriter and a dancer and gender artist for The olivia Project, where artists who have never worked together are paired up and asked to make a collaboration, could still see some changes as the finishing touches are applied. “It’s very fun to be able to find two people with very different backgrounds and collaborate to create one cohesive piece of art,” he says. “I’ve collaborated with other musicians when writing music and collaborated with other actors when doing theatre but never something with this varied a team.” It’s the second year the project has been part of the annual festival. Fornier-Hanlon is also involved in the theatre end of the festival in Hide and Go Sell, a play about a salesman who tries to leave his profession only to be hounded by his former colleagues. The comedy is among three one-act plays that will premiere this year at the Young Playwrights Festival, part of the IGNITE! festival, which also includes The Living Situation and Onomatopoeia. Fornier-Hanlon, who learned his musical skills from his father, a children’s entertainer, plays the guitar and aspires to add the accordion to his repertoire. His enjoyment of theatre dates back to his Grade 8 play at Handsworth, he says. A full list of performances is available on the website, along with some suggestions on attire. Helps to activate naturally millions of stem cells from our own bone marrow. The increase in stem cells released from the bone marrow into the blood stream have the potential to become other types of tissue cells with specialized function. Stem cells will multiply and are able to become heart cells, liver cells or any other organ. Located everywhere in our body, stem cells are even under our skin layered between the epidermis and dermis. This is why an increase in stem cells under our skin may help to create a more youthful cell that would replenish elastin and collagen and thus may make us look younger. If our bone marrow does not produce enough stem cells this can result in many illnesses, especially a weak heart, kidneys, liver, pancreas, in fact all healthy functions of our body are decreased. Sufficient stem cells in our body have a great potential of self-repair and the ability to rejuvenate tissues. It does not contain live human stem cells as these can only be transplanted by surgery and are subject to immunosuppressant drugs to avoid graft rejection.Naturopathic Doctor summarized his experience in writing after using this Stem Cell Activator: Used for all organ and tissue damage, heart attack damage, osteo-arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, traumatic brain injury, muscular #63 dystrophy, Crohn’s disease, diabetes, lupus, spinal injuries, and other diseases and tissue damage. The results have been very satisfactory to us and to the patients and the time varies with different patients depending on the extremity of the damage.

Acidic Stomach & Acid Reflux

By Dr. C. Hammoud, PhD - Must help or money refunded If your stomach is excessively acidic it means all your cells in your body are acidic. By correcting the excessively acidic stomach you should not need anti-acid pills to control reflux (heartburn). All acidic cells are deprived of oxygen and are the breeding ground for many illnesses including weight gain, diabetes, stress, vascular diseases and cancer. This fact was discovered by Dr. Otto Warburg years ago and he received two Nobel Prizes. You can change your acidic cells in your body by eating 80% alkaline food (vegetables, legumes, fruit). Eat 20% acidic food (bread, noodles, rice, animal derived foods). Full details inside the box. If you don’t want to make major #39 changes in your diet, try Bell Acidic Stomach/Alkaline Balance #39 guaranteed to bring your body to a pH alkaline balance. Free pH test kit inside the box. Dr. C. Everett Koop M.D. states that 68% of all illnesses and deaths are due to the wrong food and the quantity we eat. Unfortunately, virtually nothing about nutrition or natural health products is taught in medical school say many prominent medical doctors in print and on TV including the well known Dr. Andrew Weil M.D. Go on the internet and inform yourself.

YOUR NORTH SHORE GUIDE to THE ROAD

Columnist DAVID CHAO reviews the Ford Edge Sport in next week’s Rev section. NEWS photo Mike Wakefield

THE 2011 Volkswagen Tiguan, still in its first generation, is the youngster of its group of competitors and wears that badge with pride. It’s available at Capilano Volkswagen at 1151 Marine Dr., in North Vancouver.

2011 Volkswagen Tiguan

Compact SUV an enjoyable drive David Chao

Contributing writer

IN a market dominated by the Ford Escape, Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4, the Volkswagen Tiguan is refreshingly different. Unlike its more established competitors, the VW is still in its first generation, having only been introduced in 2008. It’s the youngster of the group, and it wears that badge with pride. While the RAV4 and CR-V really set the bar for compact SUVs in the late ’90s, the current models are hard to see as compact. They’ve grown with each generation, to the point where the current RAV4 is a half-metre longer than the original version and offers optional third-row seating. In contrast, the Tiguan retains a

compact feel that no longer applies to the larger Toyota and many other supposedly small SUVs. Mind you, the Tiguan isn’t really much smaller than the rest — it just feels like it. And that’s due to two factors: perception and performance. Part of our perception of the Tiguan as a compact SUV comes from the fact that we don’t have a previous model to compare it to. We know the RAV4 and CR-V have gotten bigger and bigger because we remember the tiny “cute-ute” SUVs that they once were. In contrast, we see the Tiguan for what it really is — a vehicle that has yet to experience a generational growth spurt. That being said, perception is only worth so much. A far more important consideration is the Tiguan’s excellent performance. Whereas other SUVs drive

VW unveils new and improved Beetle

A weekly round-up of automotive news, good, bad and just plain weird:

New Volkswagen Beetle: Less Flower, More Power There are those who will remember Volkswagen’s 1998 launch of the New Beetle as a cynical exercise in pandering to that good ol’ baby boomer wellspring of nostalgia. Certainly, the cutesy car with the vase on the dashboard was more niche-market than the mass-transit original. However, despite the compromised seating position created by bolting that classic silhouette onto a Golf platform, I liked the little car. Owning an original Beetle means a clattery ride, alarming steering and the accelerative capacity of an elderly mollusc; but owning a New Beetle is just like having a fun-looking VW Golf, which is no bad thing. But little has changed over the years, and the design that was funky back in ’98 is now as dated as an Ace of Base MiniDisc. Not to worry, because VW just pulled the wraps off their complete overhaul of the Beetle. ‘Vee-Dub’ has squared off the curves, stretched and leaned the profile, and dropped in available turbocharged power plants out of the hot-hatch Gti. The result is the new New Beetle, and it makes the old New Beetle look like the old Old Beetle. And that’s the most confusing sentence ever printed in this column. . . yet. Nissan shows off Leaf Nismo Electric Racecar

only 20 minutes, with a pit-stop recharge of 30 minutes? And with a zero to 100 kilometres per hour time just under seven seconds and a top speed of 150 km/h, you’re not going to beat any Tesla Roadsters. On the other hand, it’s a cool concept, and one that actually runs. Nissan is kicking around the idea of a spec race series for it, and the trickledown effect of racing EVs is sure to be clean cars that are also fun to drive. Should You Buy an Electric BMW? There’s an App For That Perhaps the regular Nissan Leaf’s a little too humdrum in the sporting department, and the Tesla Roadster costs too much of the other type of green for you to swing the monthly payments. Why not an electric version of the BMW 1 Series? Well, before you pony up the dough, BMW has come up with a clever little application that will tell you whether any sort of EV is going to fit your driving needs. Their EVolve app is a neat little program that pairs with your smart phone and tracks your individual trips and mileage. Working on GPS, the application is a great way to track your car usage just out of general interest, but EVolve will also calculate whether a stopover might be used for some quick charging, or whether you’ve travelled outside an EV’s theoretical range on a particular

Braking News

Brendan McAleer By now, everyone’s familiar with Nissan’s upcoming electric vehicle (EV), the Leaf. It’s a friend to Lance Armstrong and polar bears alike, or so the incessant advertising would have you believe. Too bad you can’t actually get your hands on one yet. You might be excited by the Leaf’s promise of near-guiltfree driving and hatchback practicality, but wouldn’t expect somebody to try to create a race car out of the little green machine. Well, Nissan just did. In a move that’s a bit like sewing a silk purse out of David Suzuki’s ear, Nissan Motorsports basically took the engine and transmission out of a Leaf, threw the rest of the car away and then built a new, sleek, carbon-fibre body around the EV powertrain. Weighing in at under 1,000 kilograms, the Leaf racer looks like somebody put a Lamborghini Gallardo in the dryer for too long. It’s fantastic. But it’s also totally impractical and kinda slow. How about a race-track operating time of

Tiguan’s interior styling functional and efficient From page 30

ing to look at than both. There’s nothing particularly wrong with its design, but considering how great the driving experience is, the styling is a bit of a let-down (even after a mid-cycle refresh). If you’re after the best possible handling in a compact SUV, don’t let the Tiguan’s one weakness hold you back. If you want the best of both worlds then you might want to wait for the eventual redesign, and hope that it still feels like a compact SUV. Design While there’s nothing particularly wrong with the Tiguan’s plain exterior, there’s just nothing to get emotional about. As a result, the SUV blends into its surroundings entirely too well, completely failing to stand out on a busy street. All of the exterior design elements seem borrowed from other VW cars, ensuring that the Tiguan maintains a classy look and family resemblance. Some improvements have been made for 2011, but the overall impact remains the same as before. Inside, the Tiguan’s styling is functional and efficient, but is far too simple and spartan to really grab attention. The plain-Jane cabin features muted colours and a tall dashboard with controls mounted high up, leaving a large expanse of bare plastic below

like family sedans and minivans, the Tiguan is closer to the Golf hatchback on which it’s based: nimble, quick and, most of all, fun to drive. That, more than anything else, is what makes this SUV feel true to its compact dimensions. The Tiguan offers the unique character of a Volkswagen, connecting to the road and feeling very much like an extension of the driver’s will. It’s comfortable and intuitive from the moment you get behind the wheel, offering a relaxed and natural on-road experience that makes it very rewarding to drive. There’s a word for this, of course: fahrvergnügen. Translating roughly as “driving enjoyment,” it’s a term that VW hasn’t used in advertising for years, but its spirit is thankfully alive and well in the automaker’s engineering efforts. Put all of this together and you have a fun, highly manoeuvrable compact SUV that would be very appealing to a wide range of people if not for the lacklustre styling. Alas, the Tiguan is about as boring as a vehicle gets, looking like a cross between the Golf hatchback and Touareg SUV, and proving less interest-

the beltline. Performance A turbocharged 2.0-litre inline-four powers every Tiguan, producing 200 horsepower and 207 foot-pounds of torque. It’s the same setup found in the Golf GTI, and it’s used to great effect. The potent engine provides excellent power with minimal turbo lag, making the Tiguan extremely responsive at all times. The Tiguan comes with either a six-speed manual or six-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission, as well as front- or all-wheel drive (automatic only). Overall, the powertrain is very well developed, contributing significantly to the SUV’s class-leading driving experience. Handling is responsive and there’s lots of feedback from the slightly heavy steering, enabling drivers to intuitively sense and react to road conditions. Ride quality is also quite good, with the stiff-yet-subtle comfort of a German car. Perhaps the only downside to the powertrain is the noise generated by the turbocharged engine, which can be a bit much See Available page 33

Available space optimized From page 32 at times. Environment Although the Tiguan doesn’t seem as big inside as competing vehicles, it doesn’t feel at all cramped. VW did a good job optimizing the available space to maximize interior room. VW designers clearly sought to put all of the controls high up on the dashboard where they can be found with a quick glance away from the road. Even the door-mounted controls are easy to see, located just ahead of the exterior mirrors. Equipped with an eightposition adjustable seat, the Tiguan puts the driver in a tall seating position that affords a great view of the road. The rear seats have a well-designed one-touch folding mechanism and split 40/20/40, with the middle section providing a wide plastic armrest with cupholders, while allowing easy access to the cargo area. SUV offers friendly dimensions From page 33

compartment could be improved. The rectangular cargo space benefits from a standard parcel shelf that doubles as a security cover. Features Starting at $27,875, the Tiguan is available in Trendline, Comfortline, and Highline trims. The base Trendline comes with ABS, traction control, Electronic Stabilization Programme, cruise control, air conditioning, tilt/ telescope steering, remote keyless entry, power windows, fog lamps, heated exterior mirrors, eight-speaker CD/MP3 stereo, tire-pressure monitoring system and front/front-side/sidecurtain airbags. Notable options, dependent on trim level, include adaptive Xenon headlamps, panoramic sunroof, GPS navigation and entertainment system, rear-passenger side airbag, 12-way poweradjustable driver’s seat with memory, Bluetooth and a sport suspension. With the manual transmission, fuel efficiency is rated at 11.2 litres/100 kilometres in the city and 7.7 l/100 km on the highway. Thumbs up Rewarding driving experience, friendly and appealing dimensions. Thumbs down Lacklustre styling and a relatively high starting price. The bottom line

A wolf in sheep’s clothing. Competitors ■ Chevrolet Equinox Starting at $25,995, the Equinox is powered by a 2.4-litre inline-four producing 182 h.p. and 174 foot-pounds of torque, or a 3.0-litre V6 with 264 h.p. and 222 foot-pounds of torque. The second generation Equinox is a winner for GM, boasting an impressive design and fantastic fuel efficiency. It’s not as fun to drive as the Tiguan but might be a better overall package. ■ Honda CR-V The $26,290 CR-V features a 2.4-litre inline-four with 180 h.p. and 161 foot-pounds of torque. It’s not nearly as interesting to drive as the Tiguan, but offers pleasant, predictable and relaxed performance. In many ways, the upmarket Acura RDX is a better comparison for the Tiguan, thanks largely to its turbocharged 2.3-litre inline-four and super-handling all-wheel-drive system, but the luxury SUV comes with a much higher pricetag. ■ Nissan Rogue Equipped with a 2.5-litre inline-four with 170 h.p. and 175 foot-pounds of torque, the $23,648 Rogue is one of the more fun to drive compact SUVs on the market. The Rogue sets itself apart from its more conservative competition with edgy styling, but lacks versatility relative to more upright vehicles such as the Tiguan that put stronger emphasis on usability.

Team Hot Wheels to attempt jump trip. Is an EV right for you? It’ll be a free download by the end of the month. Record Hot Wheels Jump Attempt at Indy 500 If you’re anything like me, your childhood involved little orange ramps and launching 1:64 scale models into oblivion. Or at least over the family dog. Seems like I’m not the only one for whom forcing tiny cars to do daredevil jumps was a youthful passion. Team Hot Wheels, a bunch of auto nuts, is going to attempt a worldrecord Hot Wheels jump at this year’s Indy 500. Oh yeah, and they’re using a real car. Using more than 90 feet of vertical drop on a faithfully replicated full-size model of those iconic orange ramps, a masked stunt driver will attempt to launch his car to break the current 302 foot record. Is he or she nuts? Probably. Is this awesome? Definitely. Audi Offers Royal Discount Quick! Do you have eight first names? Own a castle? Got a mysterious old sword in the basement and a penchant for repressing the peasantry? Have a complete inability to wave like a normal human being? Well, has Audi got good news for you! The German marque is offering a whopping 60 per cent price reduction for members of the British Royal Family. Now, I mean, obviously if somebody needs to keep an eye on the pennies, it’s the Queen. That’s why her face is on them. One can’t just go around squandering the people’s money on Rolls-Royces anymore. That’s how Charles I ended up getting that really bad haircut. But 60 per cent off on a new Audi A8? Naturally, this is a way for Audi to make sure the swarming hordes of paparazzi descending on the upcoming Royal wedding like a plague of strobing locusts will be snapping plenty of pics of the entire Audi catalogue. Smart PR move. I’m going to tape “Sir” onto my driver’s license and pop down to the Northshore Auto Mall to see if I can get an A3 for the same price as a Fit.
