Missing teen’s ex faces sex charges Manisha Krishnan
mkrishnan@nsnews.com
A Bowen Island man with connections to a missing Squamish teenager appeared in North Vancouver provincial court Wednesday after being charged with sexual offences against another girl. Gavin Arnott, 22, was arrested on April 29 for sexual interference of a person under 16 and possession of child pornography. Arnott appeared in court on Wednesday morning and was instructed to seek counsel and return on June 1, according to a Crown Counsel spokeswoman, who added that a publication ban is in effect. He has not yet entered a plea. Arnott also remains a person of interest in the disappearance of his ex-girlfriend, Jodi Henrickson, according to Bowen Island RCMP. See Missing page 3

WV schools ranked top 10 in B.C. Jane Seyd

TWO private schools in West Vancouver were in the top 10 this week as the Fraser Institute released its controversial secondary school rankings for schools in British Columbia and the Yukon. Collingwood and Mulgrave schools tied for 10th place in the rankings of 274 schools. Both were handed marks of 8.8 out of 10. Top-ranked public schools on the North Shore were Sentinel and Rockridge in West Vancouver. They were ranked 22nd and
Fraser Institute rankings system panned by education professionals
30th in the province respectively. In North Vancouver, the private school St. Thomas Aquinas, ranked 25th, and public schools Handsworth, ranked 41st, and Argyle, ranked 54th, were given the highest marks by the rightwing think tank. Carson Graham got the lowest score on the North Shore, ranked 242nd. The controversial rankings are determined by several factors, including the average exam mark earned by students in mandatory
examination subjects, the percentage of exams failed, how close the exam mark is to the mark handed out by the school for the rest of the course work, the difference between marks earned by male and female students and graduation rates. The report card authors say their rankings show how schools in similar areas compare and whether or not schools are improving academically over time. But they have also been roundly criticized by many, including the teachers’ union and many school officials, for failing to adequately account for socio-economic differences and for not valuing other qualities, such as athletics and good citizenship, which also make up important parts of a school.
