North Van’s top cop leaving RCMP Supt. Tonia Enger goes back to school for a year and won’t be back James Weldon
jweldon@nsnews.com
NORTH Vancouver’s police chief is leaving the detachment little more than two years after she took up the job. RCMP Supt. Tonia Enger broke the news to members of the force and the community’s SUPT. Enger: “. . . this two municipal councils last week. Enger, who particular opportunity is took over as chief in February 2009, will be only going to come once stepping down in mid-August to enroll in a in my career. . . .” year-long educational program based outside British Columbia. “It’s unfortunate that I am moving on as early as I am, but I do have to look after my career,” she said, in an interview with the North Shore News. “I think from a broader perspective, it’s an area that I have a gap in regards to education.” Enger didn’t name the program — like many police officers, she’s cautious

about revealing exactly where and when she’ll be in her off hours — but described it as a graduate-level course at the Canadian Forces College that focuses on strategic issues in policy making and politics. Only a select few individuals are invited to join, she said. Enger, who has switched detachments more than a dozen times in a 24-year career, said on her arrival in North Vancouver that her assumption of command here would mark an end to an itinerant phase. In an interview with the North Shore News in May that year, she said she had “no intention of going anywhere.” That plan changed, however, when Enger was approached by the head of the Canadian Forces program about two months ago, she explained. She had been “exploring educational opportunities” for about a year, she said, and when this one came along, it was too good to pass up. “My intentions were to stay here,” said Enger. “I have been approached on a number of fronts to take other opportunities and moves beyond this one, and I’ve said ‘No.’ But . . . I know this particular opportunity is only going to come once in my career . . . I don’t think anyone would have turned down.” The response from her colleagues and employers has been positive on the whole, she said. “Some of the reaction is of course disappointed that I’m moving on, but it’s also very supportive that I’m trying to expand my horizons.” City of North Vancouver Mayor Darrell Mussatto admitted the move surprised him, but said on the whole it wouldn’t be disruptive for the detachment or the community.
But for Wyee — a Telus employee who drives across the Lower Mainland each day to install TVs, phones and Internet connections in homes — the region’s rising gas prices cut too deep into his paycheques. “It’s tough. I’m filling up about three times a week and it’s just too expensive,” said Wyee, who plans to move back

Residence in riding?
Lower Lonsdale
East Vancouver
Mount Seymour Parkway
12th and Chesterfield
Yes. Born here too.
Which is more important, the party or the candidate?
The party. Collectively, the candidates tell the story of the party. We have professional artists and 40 per cent women among our candidates.
I would say party because of the national nature of the election. We have candidates in nearly every riding to clearly be a national party, one for which people can vote in their ridings. We need to be a good voice to present positions on the Green Party of Canada.
Candidate. I am running as an independent candidate because I believe the parties interfere with: 1) an MP’s ability to actually represent his/her riding and as a result, 2) the ability for our democracy to function properly, e.g. Parliament is effectively controlled by the leaders of the political parties.
The candidate. We rely on our MPs to represent our interests. For example, a significant amount of North Vancouver’s public infrastructure would not survive a major earthquake. Your MP should ensure both that there is sufficient budget for public infrastructure and that North Vancouver receives an appropriate share.
Politics is a team sport. In order to get things done in Ottawa, you need to be part of a party. That said, voters should support a candidate that reflects their values and priorities.
What do you promise to do for your riding if elected?
I would give 10 per cent of my salary, or $15,000, to North Vancouver arts groups.
Listen to the people, do what we say we will do with inputs and if unable to accomplish goals, explain why. As we have seen through this and many elections, promises are made and then not met. This leads to disengagement of the people.
I will regularly communicate with North Vancouver voters and gather direction on key issues. I will actively investigate and drive improvements to the dysfunctional political system. After one year, I will survey the riding and if 51 per cent of voters are unsatisfied with my performance, I will resign.
I would fight hard for North Vancouverites and the interests of North Vancouver. I will use technology and regular, frank dialogue with constituents to ensure I hear concerns in our community.
I will keep fighting for North Vancouver, and build on my record of delivering for North Vancouver. I will continue to ensure that North Vancouver has a seat at the table in Ottawa.
Long-form census: Keep it or scrap it?
We will restore the long-form census.
It should be kept since any organization needs good data to run effectively. Census data helps Canada’s leaders and policy makers to make informed decisions.
Canadian census data is worldrenowned and highly valuable to Canadian governments and businesses. We need to keep the long form to continue offering that data.
Keep it. Our community’s interests are paramount and the census helps to ensure our community receives an appropriate share.
The long-form census will be delivered to more households this year than any in Canadian history. I encourage all Canadians to fill out the census.
Long gun registry: Keep it or scrap it?
We have to register vehicles, dogs and other weapons— I say keep it.
Keep it, but make it less onerous and work better. For example, rural Canadians and First Nations may feel criminalized by owning a long gun.
We should ask Canada’s police forces about the long gun registry. If they see real value in it, we should keep it. Otherwise scrap it.
Keep it. It is important to protect individuals from gun crime and our police officers have said, time and again, they need it.
Scrap it. Criminals don’t register their guns in any case. We will focus more time and energy on tackling crime.
F-35 contract: Keep it or scrap it?
Scrap the F-35s and invest in ships to defend our coastline and assert arctic sovereignty.
There are reports that the cost as shown to taxpayers doesn’t actually include engines. There appears to be options for other proven aircraft for less money.
Replacing our CF-18s should be part of an overall Canadian Forces plan. We need to understand that plan before deciding on the F-35 contract.
Scrap it as it stands. Military families are relying on food banks. The first priority should be to ensure that frontline personnel are taken care of.
Keep it. It’s the best plane for the best price.
What is the role of Canada’s Armed Forces?
Currently we are a warmaking nation whereas most Canadians believe we should be peacekeeping.
The defence of Canada, the defence of North America in co-operation with the United States, and to contribute to international security.
Defend Canada against all aggressors. Support and help defend our allies against attack. Provide emergency aid both within Canada and internationally.
Canadian Forces help provide assistance after natural disasters in Canada and around the world. They also have an important role in building and keeping peace.
To defend Canadians, and Canada’s interests around the world.
Which is worse, a minority government or a coalition government?
You leave out the worst of the worst: a Conservative majority government. Coalition and minority governments are not illegitimate in our Parliamentary democracy; they force parties to work together to find consensus.
Both are good; neither are worse. Many countries operate their national assembles as coalitions and also with minority components. We are seeing the ongoing description and speculation of ‘coalition’ as a dysfunctional state of government we may experience after this election. Where is the effort towards consensus building.
A minority. Minority governments are unstable and ineffective, e.g. the last five years and three elections. Given the current division of votes in Canada, a majority government is unlikely, so a coalition government is our only hope for a period of political stability, e.g. Germany’s successful history of coalitions.
I think Canadians want their elected representatives to work together for their communities. So the worst option is a party unwilling to permit co-operation in Parliament.
A Liberal-NDP-Bloc coalition government would ruin Canada. A minority government with Michael Ignatieff as prime minister — made up of the three parties that lost the election — would be undemocratic and hopelessly unstable. Thankfully, we have third choice — a strong, stable Conservative majority government.
Should Canada move to some form of proportional representation?
Absolutely. Far too many Canadian voices are unrepresented in Parliament with our current first-pastthe-post system.
Yes, without a doubt. It is sincerely time for this.
Maybe. The current system is broken. Saxton won with only 27 per cent of votes in 2008. We must find and adopt a better electoral system.
It is clear that our current system is in need of democratic reform. How we achieve it will require compromise and significant debate.
Maybe. But such a change should be initiated by the people, not self-interested politicians.

NV activist will take on Clark in byelection NV Fight HST campaigner Eddie Petrossian seeks Point Grey seat Jane Seyd jseyd@nsnews.com
FORMER North Vancouver Conservative candidate and antiHST campaigner Eddie Petrossian said he will submit papers this weekend to run in the Point Grey byelection, where Premier Christy Clark is seeking a seat.
Point Grey is the riding recently vacated by former premier Gordon Campbell.
Petrossian said he plans to run as an independent in the race because “I really feel the two choices in that riding are not enough.” Clark is facing off against civil liberties campaigner David Eby, who is running for the NDP, and Vancouver school board employee Francoise Raunet, representing the Green Party. Petrossian lives in North Vancouver, but said he doubts the fact he doesn’t live in the ridingisanissue.Petrossian, who is completing a master’s degree
Eddie Petrossian in leadership at Trinity Western, said he’ll be concentrating on issues like the impact of inflation on seniors, the Broadway transit
corridor and the inability of small businesses in the area to stay afloat. In the last provincial election, Petrossian ran for the B.C. Conservatives, garnering just 529 votes. Most recently, he was involved in the campaign against the HST. “I’m still opposed to the HST,” he said. Petrossian said he’d like to see the tax reduced by one or two percentage points. He’d also like to see the number of items taxed under the HST reduced. “It’s hurting a lot of middle- to low-income individuals,” he said. Most recently, Petrossian was a member of the B.C. anti-HST campaigners. But he said he has “temporarily resigned” from the party in order to run as an independent in the byelection. Petrossian said he thinks it’s “highly presumptuous” for Clark to assume she’s a shoe-

the concurrent 17 per cent drop in incidents in Lower Lonsdale and the improved co-ordination with the West Vancouver police, she acknowledged she would be leaving some things unfinished. “This wasn’t in my immediate plan; I had a vision for probably the next couple of years, rolling out the full crime reduction model,” said Enger. “My utopia would be a true integration with West Vancouver in all of our tactical responses.” The superintendent said she considers British Columbia her home, but whether or not she’ll be back is an open question. “I’m going to miss the people here from the detachment and from the community,” she said. “I can say for sure that if I come back to B.C., the North Shore will be in my sights to live.”
“I certainly understand her reasons; she’s being promoted, basically,” he said. “This is quite an honour to get this kind of training. We want to see people do the best they can; you want to encourage them to move forward.” Mussatto said he and District of North Vancouver Mayor Richard Walton, together with other members of the policing committee, would be looking at their options in the coming weeks, initially focusing on the possibility of promoting from within the detachment to fill Enger’s spot. Already, the mayors had identified a “very talented male and very talented female” officer, either of whom might potentially be able take up the reins, said Mussatto. If those didn’t work out, however, the committee would expand its search to other areas of the national police force. Mussatto said he believed the detachment would be able to make the transition more or less seamlessly. “We have a good, stable group of officers,” he said. “I’m very confident we can find a successor.” While Enger said she was pleased with what she had accomplished in her two years here — particularly with the expansion of the detachment’s targeted crime reduction program,
in for the seat. He said Clark should call a provincial election rather than just a byelection. Petrossian came to Canada from Tehran in 1978 and grew up in West Vancouver, where he attended West Vancouver secondary.

Little change
W
HILE most people have likely been taking a merciful break from politics this Easter weekend, our federal candidates are gathering their strength for the final lap of the campaign before the election. A late surge in NDP support notwithstanding, this race has failed to excite. It has become clear politicians were much more interested in having an election than were voters. Sure, the Tories would prefer to rule with a majority. And the Liberals would settle for just about anything other than continuing to prop up Stephen Harper’s Conservatives. But voters haven’t been impressed that these are urgent national issues. That’s reflected in the fact that nobody’s minds are changing. Polls have been remarkably static. In an effort to change that, we’ll likely see an increase in the use of scare

tactics. On the Tory side, the idea that one political party might co-operate with another will be presented as akin to making a deal with Darth Vader. Liberals, meanwhile, will continue to suggest that Harper would sooner throw ailing grannies to the curb than reign in plans to spend on fighter jets and prisons. So far, these tactics have failed to change much in the court of public opinion. It would seem that unless a lot changes in a few days — always a possibility in politics — those of us who bother to vote will likely vote in much the same way as we did in the last election, probably with the same result. Apparently we like our governments a little constrained and a little forced to compromise. There’s a message for our politicians there.

Listen to constituents on oil tankers Dear Editor: The issue of oil tankers and the proposed Enbridge pipeline was addressed at a recent North Vancouver all-candidates meeting, and the audience, consisting mainly of people 40 and over, was very vocal in support of a tanker ban. As co-founder of SEA, a group dedicated to raising social and environmental awareness in North Vancouver, last October I delivered more than 1,000 postcards to Andrew Saxton, signed by North Vancouver constituents, demanding an oil tanker ban on the coast of British Columbia — such as had once been established by the Liberal government in 1972. The position of these citizens is consistent with that of 80 per cent of British Columbians. It takes only common sense to understand that oil tankers going up and down the coast could easily result in disaster, perhaps due to technical oversight, perhaps due to human error. Indeed the proposed route goes right past Gil Island where the Queen of the North sank in 2006 because errors were made by those in command. Nothing can ensure that human error will not occur with Enbridge’s proposed plan to build a pipeline transporting Alberta tar sand oil over the pristine North British Columbian wilderness and loading it onto tankers in Kitimat. Not only is the proposal to allow oil tankers to cruise the coast unacceptable, but Enbridge has a terrible track record with respect to pipeline spills. At the all-candidates meeting at Mount Seymour

United Church, the candidates were asked whether they would support a tanker ban off the coast of British Columbia. While Liberal, NDP and the Green party candidates all supported a tanker ban, as coincides with public opinion, Mr. Saxton announced that the Enbridge proposal has just been sent for environmental study. In my opinion, such a study is a complete waste of taxpayers’ money, as no reasonable study could ever approve such an inherently risky proposition. Mr. Saxton also equated a tanker ban with shutting down the ports, an equation that is, in my opinion, ridiculous.
What I found of particular interest was Mr. Saxton’s answer to the later question: Whether candidates, when faced with a conflict between party position and the position of their constituents, would support their constituents or their party. Mr. Saxton declared he would support his constituents. He has been visited by numerous delegations of citizens demanding a tanker ban. Eighty per cent of British Columbians want a tanker ban. Mr. Saxton is not supporting his constituents. Leslie Palleson North Vancouver
Leave regional park off-leash, says 79-year-old Dear Editor: Unfortunately I was unable to attend the information meeting about dog regulations in Capilano Regional Park last week. I am a 79 year old woman who has lived directly adjacent to the Capilano River trails and who has walked there with great pleasure for 45 years. Although I no longer have a dog I totally support those who walk with their dogs off leash. Almost two years ago I was dragged off my feet while walking my daughter’s large-ish dog. As a result, I fell over the side of the trail and severely broke my ankle. It took the combined effort of three paramedics and eight firemen to get me out to a waiting ambulance. Subsequently I had orthopedic surgery, spent six days in hospital and
three months of physiotherapy at Lions Gate Hospital. If the dog had not been on leash this would not have happened. Women who walk or run alone are vulnerable, to which I can also attest as about 15 years I was subjected to a stalker. After I notified the police, he was warned off, but it took me a long time to walk there again. In addition, the footpaths are very uneven and, particularly with runners, a dog on leash creates an added hazard. For the most part I have found people pretty conscientious about picking up after their dogs. The perceived threat to wildlife is overstated. I have never heard of any problem. Green dream and car fantasies hit the road
MY mother used to boast, tongue-in-cheek, that we were related to the great race-car driver Stirling Moss.
Moss had apparently been married to a distant relative of my dad’s, though we never met him or his wife. Our family’s close link to fabulous cars and their drivers continued when my parents rented out space in our garage to the owner of a gleaming MG. I also once dated somebody who drove an Alfa Romeo (it was his mother’s). Er, that’s it for my glamorous car stories. My husband Stanley’s devotion to cars has never amounted to much, either, though he cheerfully recalls his highschool sweetheart, a ’66 Corvair convertible. Beyond that, Stanley and I are not automotive people. It’s the upkeep that poses the problem. In the 1980s, we bought a vintage car from the mother of our friend John. A fastidious engineer, he’d preserved it in mint condition for her for years. We drove it into the ground within months. What can I say? We’re slobs. For some people, cars are a fetish. As you know, there are drivers who upgrade their

Kate Zimmerman transport regularly. They can blather on about mileage, headroom, torque and whatnot, but I suspect that prestige is the key player in this scenario. The topic of car ownership zoomed into view lately at my house because it was time to return our solitary leased vehicle to the dealer. A couple of days before that, Stanley went down to the Northshore Auto Mall with visions of 2011 models doing victory laps around his cerebral cortex. He test-drove a few of the dowdier examples, then we concluded that even the lower end of new was beyond our price range. “I think we should just do without a car for a while, see how that works,” he said, the eternal optimist.
In the spirit of green-ness, I had to agree. Why couldn’t we be an ultra-virtuous family, whose members walk, bicycle or take public transit everywhere by choice? I pictured an entirely new routine in which the four of us would hop on a bus together and head to Lynn Valley Centre to pick up our daily servings of bean sprouts and bee pollen. Teenagers like nothing better than being seen in public doing wholesome things with their parents, I told myself. Stanley and Bart would sport beards to suit our new world view, and Petunia and I would let our armpit hair grow out to full braiding length. We’d only take off our bike helmets for Christmas dinner and Easter brunch. I imagined the pleasure I would suddenly take in the zany antics of squirrels. And all that exercise would surely make it easier for me to do up my pants. Honestly, I was all for it — or part of me was part for it, at least. It took me back to the days when I was a non-driver, in my early 20s. I had no kids then, and was able to organize my days around walking to and from work, stopping en route to do errands. I was slim, healthy
and didn’t have to spend money on gas. Millions of people live happily (and sadly) without cars. We could do it. Why not? Day 1: An appointment downtown necessitates my rising at 6:30 a.m. to board the bus for an 8 a.m. rendezvous. Getting there and back on public transit devours four hours. Later in the afternoon, another appointment eats up more than three hours because I go on foot. Meanwhile, Stanley rides his bike to his office. Upon arrival, he discovers he’s forgotten his keys, so he rides his bike back home, decides he might as well have an early lunch since he’s there, and blows an entire morning. Day 2: Stanley wakes up to discover that his bike has a flat tire. He takes it on the bus to get it repaired. That evening we call a cab to get to a concert downtown. Later, we use the GPS in his phone to find the right stop on our midnight bus-ride home, then walk six blocks in a thundering sleet storm. Day 3: Bart is going on a camping expedition after school so Stanley has to take the bus to the grocery store and cab it back with all the camping vittles. A friend’s
mum drives Bart and his tent, etc., to school, and Bart has to walk home at noon to retrieve the bags of food. Day 4: Hey, we say to ourselves, this is like the olden days, where every single chore took eons, there was no time whatsoever for relaxation, and your maximum life expectancy was 32. Day 5: We stroll around the auto mall again. We fantasize about the pre-owned BMWs we see, imagining
ourselves living a Bimmer lifestyle that includes yachts, massages and professional exfoliation. I think about piloting a BMW crammed with our usual detritus — stillsmouldering barbecues, rotting books from my childhood, wet socks — its astonishing radio thudding with the CBC’s Brian Minter discussing potted tubers. Over-height developers Sp rin g Fa i r d a y, M a y 14 t h owe money for view loss Sa t u r10a m - 3p m
Dear Editor: Regarding your April 15 story about the North Shore Credit Union tower at 13th and Lonsdale and its plan to fund a new gallery: Gee, what a surprise! It’s the usual “motherhood and apple pie” goodies from developers. Whenever developers want to devalue views of nearby homeowners and to abuse the allegedly “official” community plan, they try to fob off the council and uninvolved distant locals by giving money for an art gallery, daycare, seniors centre or a sculpture in a park, and then throw in some supposed benefit referring to the disabled, LEED certification and clean air. These tokens are stuff that would make any opponents of the project look like the bad guy. “Gee, if you don’t like my over-height, overly dense project, you must be against art, kids, old folks, parks and the disabled, etc., etc.” The simple fact of the matter is, it’s all about the money. You . . . want to take . . . some of mine. What you do not take into account is that the affected homes and condos of the regular folks are their major investments, a hedge against inflation and a form of pension fund. When the developers, with the collusion of the folks at city hall, take away the view, those uphill properties are discounted, lose value, become cheaper. So you are asking those existing condo owners to subsidize the new tower at no cost to the developer. That’s stealing. The developer is building the over-height tower on the backs and in the wallets of the existing property owners and the council is going right along with that plan. The existing property owners bought their condos based on the assurance from the official community plan that said their view would be at
a prescribed level. The seller charged extra saying “what a great view,” and the buyer paid a premium for that benefit. Everyone went into the deal “eyes wide open.” The council has been collecting taxes for 10-15 years based on the premium value of that view property. If you want to take that view away, no problem. Simply have council pay me the amount that owners overpaid in the past, and have the developer pay what I’m going to lose in the future when I try to sell. If you can’t do that, stay within the official community plan. Bruce Lindsay North Vancouver

Dear Editor: I like to clarify some elements in your April 10 story, NSMBA Launches Trail Adoption Plan. The article incorrectly states that the North Shore Mountain Bike Association is launching “the North Shore’s first ever trail adoption plan.” In 1988, the Adopt-A-Trail program (for hiking trails), was started in Chilliwack, B.C. This program was then made promoted to the Outdoor Recreation Council and the Federation of Mountain Clubs of B.C. who took responsibility for the Adopt-A-Trail program province wide, including several trails on the North Shore. I wish the NSMBA success in their volunteer endeavours. Gabriel Mazoret North Vancouver

to Calgary, where gas prices are significantly lower. It’s a growing concern for motorists across British Columbia, as gasoline bills hit wallet-busting levels. According to Statistics Canada, B.C. drivers paid 16 per cent more for gas in March than the same month in 2010. According to GasBuddy.com, a site for motorists to record and track local gas prices, the average unleaded gas price in British Columbia hovered at just over $1.31 on April 20 — the highest price since 2008. In the Vancouver region, motorists are paying an average of $1.36 per litre of unleaded gas. ForJasonToews, apetroleum analyst and co-founder of GasBuddy.com, there’s little indication that gas prices will drop in the coming months. “I’m expecting to see gas prices flirting with $1.50 (per litre),” he said. “And that’s for the average price; some stations will be over that.” According to Toews, the price of crude oil, which accounts for 70 per cent of the price of a litre of gas, has played a major role in the rising cost of gas at pumps across the country. In recent months, crude oil prices have been affected by instability in North Africa and the Middle East, and particularly in Libya, where crude oil production has

Toews also said the weakening U.S. dollar has pushed up crude oil prices in Canada and elsewhere. With crude oil priced in U.S. dollars, oil producers who sell to the U.S. — Canada, Saudi Arabia, Iran and Venezuela, for example — have seen their costs for fixedprice contracts rise. According to Toews, increased demand has also played a role in the recent rise in
gas prices in Canada. With more people driving in the spring and summer months, the price of gas increases to keep motorists’ demand in line with the supply of gasoline. “Typically, we see gas prices go up as we move into summer driving season,” he said. “In Canada, we do less driving. BOB Faulkner has done it all: raced 500 kilometres along Alaska’s frozen Iditarod Trail; kayaked in choppy waters off the coast of the Outer Hebrides; raced camels across the Moroccan desert; ridden a mountain bike 140 km in New Zealand’s Southern Alps; and gone coasteering in Borneo. consistently takes on multi-day intense physical challenges and grinds his way to the finish line. “I’ve done basically any human-powered race I can get my hands on for the last 20 years,” he says. This week, Faulkner is heading off on yet another adventure, his first attempt at the Transportugal Garmin, a 1,150-km multi-stage mountain bike race crossing Portugal from north to south. The race gets underway in Bragança April 29 and wraps up in Sagres in the Algarve May 8. A librarian-student duo at North Vancouver’s Lynn Valley elementary are calling on families across the country to consider registering as organ donors.
School librarian Margaret Benson and Grade 7 student Jack Palmer — both organ donation recipients — told their personal stories to Lynn Valley
staff and students Tuesday, during a school presentation to raise awareness for National Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness Week, which took place April 17-24. “We really wanted to let students know that it’s important to talk to your family about organ donation. There are a lot of people waiting for transplants, not only in British Columbia, but all across Canada,” Benson said. It’s an important issue for Benson who, after being
diagnosed with cystic fibrosis at a young age, received a lifesaving double lung transplant when she was 40 years old. “Even though I had to have a transplant, I still never gave up. And now I live a vibrant, healthy life,” she said. These days, Benson is an active member in the province’s transplant community. Most recently, she organized the Transplant Trot Gift of Life Team, a Vancouver Sun Run team of 61 participants — 18 of whom were organ recipients.
North Vancouver student Jack Palmer — who will graduate from Lynn Valley elementary this year — received a heart transplant at seven weeks old. Since then, Palmer has won a fistful of medals from both the Canadian Transplant Games and World Transplant Games. He’s also participated at B.C. Transplant Society events, held to support recipients and to raise awareness for the need for organ donations. For Benson, the national awareness week — campaigned this year under the slogan “Live life. Pass it on.” — is an opportunity to raise awareness See Long page 17 ORGAN donation recipients Jack Palmer and Margaret Benson prepare for a school presentation during National Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness Week.

Strong adventure community on Shore From page 13
he needed to make a change. “You get a little fat and lazy with the expense accounts and all the other things that go with it,” he says. “It was only when I turned 44 that I realized that there was no longevity to this stuff. It wasn’t an epiphany, I just realized I had to get fit again.” Faulkner started training, did an Ironman competition, and the rest is history. He encourages others to not let selfdoubt, either in terms of their fitness potential — thinking they’re too old, or not strong or fit enough — or a perceived lack of time, get in their way. “You know what, you can do it,” he says. “You just take it easy in the beginning and you’ll do it in the end.” “I want other people on the Shore to understand that at 63, you can still do whatever you want,” he adds. That said, it takes a lot of dedication, something Faulkner is no stranger to. In his day job, vice-president of sales and marketing for Vancouver’s Metropolitan Fine Printers, he oversees 100 employees. That means long hours, seeing him consistently clock more than 40 hours per week. However, he still makes time to train. A devoted husband to an extremely supportive wife and father to two young children, 10 and 12-years-old, evenings aren’t available for training, so he gets up daily at 5 a.m. and trains for two to 2.5 hours on weekdays and on the weekends, puts in “the heavy time.” However, he’s not going it alone as a strong, supportive and close-knit commu-
nity of like-minded adventure racers exists on the North Shore, meaning there’s always someone willing to meet up for an early morning session. Name a local adventure athlete — for example, North Shore News columnist Dave Norona and B.C. Bike Race’s Andreas Hestler and Dean Payne — and Faulkner is grateful to count them as a friend and race mate, past or present.
“I want people on the Shore to understand that at 63, you can still do whatever you want.” — Bob Faulkner “I don’t put myself necessarily in this category, but you’ve got an awful lot of talented athletes over on the Shore and there’s some great energy flowing out of it,” he says. The camaraderie that exists is half the fun. For example, every week the “Gypsy Wagon,” a shared van, bought for $1,000 from a West Vancouver Vietnamese restaurant by a group of Faulkner’s friends, goes to a West Coast race or training session. “You get everybody in the van and you get the energy flowing and that’s what’s so fabulous,” says Faulkner. “We went to Squamish last weekend, riding, 11 of us, and we’re all in the Gypsy van talking and having fun. We’re like a bunch of kids.”
That’s not to say a certain level of competition doesn’t exist. “We all know our place, we know our pecking order,” Faulkner laughs. “They’re a very competitive bunch. When the gong goes, everybody goes, pardon the expression, ‘balls to the wall.’ You just go for it.” While Faulkner has fared well in many events over the years, coming in second in the European Adventure Racing Championships and making the top 20 in a number of world championships, winning isn’t the only reward. “I don’t really aspire to win, certainly not at 63,” he says. It’s more about being a member of the adventure community and the incredible experiences it has to offer. “I’ve got to see things and been to places that people can only imagine,” he says. Faulkner has also earned quite a reputation. Through his involvement with EcoChallenge: The Expedition Race, which was broadcast on the Discovery Channel, creator Burnett used to promote the show by referring to Faulkner as the “oldest adventure racer in the world,” like “I was some oddity,” says Faulkner. He’s also fared well in terms of personal wellness, only twice being unable to complete a race, once due to high altitude induced hypoxia during a 10-day adventure race in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco and a second time due to a case of trenchfoot in a jungle race in Fiji. “Over the years I’ve been exposed to everything from flesh-eating disease to lep-

tospirosis, you name it, from these races,” he says. “But it’s such a great experience. It’s hard to explain to people that say, ‘You’re 63, you’ve got a young family, why don’t you just give it up?’ And there’s no such thing as giving it up because when you give it up, what do you do?” “It could be this race, it could be the next one when I finally ‘blow up,’ . . . when the body just says, ‘Nope, I’m not racing another inch.’ I’ll just have to come back to Vancouver and do shorter races,” he adds. Faulkner is a strong believer in the importance of putting personal safety first, being prepared and having the proper level of experience before embarking on any and all adventures. With all of that in mind, accidents can happen. He was one of the survivors of a fatal kayaking accident during a training session in 2007 in Howe Sound, near Porteau Cove, that took the lives of two people, including his best friend Richard Juryn and Denis Fontaine. “All of us in the adventure community are aware of the risks that we take,” says Faulkner. “You have to, whatever you do, take responsibility for your own actions,” he adds. Faulkner is incredibly excited about this week’s Transportugal. He heard of the event from friends and riding buddies, former Canuck Trevor Linden and brewpub owner Mark James, who did it last year. “They were emailing me and texting me, saying, ‘This is the stupidest thing we’ve ever done. You should do it, it’s right up your alley.’ So I got sucked in and then I sucked in five friends and we decided we’d go as a group to hang out together, which is always fun, and then race individually,” he says. Joining him are: fellow North Vancouver residents Richard Dustan and Dan Swanson; as well as District of North Vancouver fireman Adam Smith, who lives in Squamish; Whistler resident Sam Brovender; and Vancouver resident Jon Bula. They’re among nine Canadians set to participate in a current field of 77. “We’re travelling down through Portugal, the whole spine of the border between Spain and Portugal, so we’re up in the country there through the mountains — 80,000 feet of elevation gain — on a 1,200-km race so we’re going to get to see stuff that the See Transportugal page 17

Long waiting list exists From page 14 for the need for donors across the country. But it also gives organ recipients the opportunity to thank donor families and support those on transplant waiting lists, she said. “Everything we do and the reason we’re here is because someone made that decision, in a time of tragedy, to donate their loved one’s organs. They’re our heroes,” she said. “And we want to give hope to people who are waiting for transplants. Organ donation does work and Jack and I are living proof of that. Even as sick as you can be, you can get through it.”
According to B.C. Transplant, more than 350 British Columbians are waiting for a lifesaving organ transplant. As of April 5, there were 789,747 people on the province’s organ donor registry. Yet B.C. Transplant also notes “some organs that could be available for transplant are lost because the decision of a loved one is not known by their family.” “We want people to have a discussion about organ donation, and make sure that they let people know what their wishes are,” Benson said. average tourist certainly never sees,” he says. “So that’s the thrill of it.” Faulkner’s main goal is to finish. “It’s a daunting distance to go on a mountain bike,” he says. “On a road bike, 1,200 km is not the end of the world but on a mountain bike it’s a lot of miles. For me and my level and my age, I want to make sure that I can do eight to 10 hours a day of hard riding because that’s about what it’s going to be, and get to the finish line.” The Transportugal, a “grinder,” differs from some other mountain bike stage races, which are more technical. “The longest day here is 174 km, that’s a lot of time on a bike. Obviously it’s not as technical, otherwise you’d never do it. It would be just too long a
day’s ride. It would be like doing three Test of Metals in one day. That’s not going to happen. This is a grind, you’ve just got to settle in.” Each day, participants will have their GPS loaded with a course, and it’s up to them to “follow the dot” on their own. The Transportugal isn’t the only race Faulkner has his heart set on this year. He’s also planning to do the B.C. Bike Race, July 2-9, and Costa Rica’s La Ruta de los Conquistadores, a mountain bike stage race from one side of the country to the other, Nov. 2-5. Due to the high cost of participating in major races (in past years Faulkner was sponsored to compete) he and his friends are gravitating towards organizing their own treks. “A lot of people are now planning their own expeditions or looking for more obscure places where you go to places like Outer Mon-

The Canucks have their eye on Lord Stanley’s trophy and each of the political parties is courting your vote in advance of the election on May 2. In B.C., at least, electioneering has been overshadowed by the Canucks’ run for the Stanley Cup. Before we head to the polls, let’s take a look at what each of the political parties is promising seniors in this election. Then it’s back to cheering for the Canucks. Obviously, a comprehensive review of the policies of each of the parties isn’t possible here; instead, let’s do a little cherry picking from the platforms of each of the four major parties to find what our politicians think will appeal to seniors in this election. First up are the Conservatives. The Conservative election platform is titled “Jails and Jets.” I’m just kidding, it’s actually titled “Here for Canada,” but speaking of a law and order agenda, the Conservative platform does have a provision that is intended to reduce the number of crimes committed against elderly Canadians. The Conservatives are promising to add

vulnerability due to age to the list of aggravating factors to be considered by the courts when sentencing criminals who commit offences against seniors. The Green Party platform, as you might expect, is focused on a smart economy, strong communities, true democracy and a green vision. Their platform is a little light on specific policies for seniors but their policy of respecting living wills is as unique as their approach to politics. There is a lot of overlap between the platforms of the NDP and the Liberals. In fact, these days, all of the major parties seem comfortable borrowing planks from their political rivals. As an example, all three major national parties are promising to boost the Guaranteed Income Supplement for the country’s
poorest seniors. There is something for everyone in the NDP platform. “Life has never been more expensive,” says Jack Layton, leader of the NDP. “It’s time we take the pressure off the household budget.” It’s not surprising, then, that the NDP slogan for this campaign is “Give your Family a Break.” The NDP policy of lowering household costs on energy bills and giving tax credits for retrofits to homes to accommodate family members has been a winner for them. So, if you want to move mom and dad into that basement suite and keep them warm and cozy at night, the NDP is there to help. The Liberals call their campaign platform the “Liberal Family Pact.” What caught my eye here wasn’t any one policy in the pact per se, but a promise. Throughout the campaign, the Liberals have tried to portray the Conservatives as secretive and autocratic, even undemo-
cratic. If elected, the Liberals say they will begin the hard work of restoring the credibility of Parliament and reconnecting Parliament to the people it serves. Those very same Liberals have, of course, not so very long ago, faced ethical challenges of their own. They lost power to the Conservatives, partly as a result of the Adscam scandal in Quebec. Still, I think the Liberals may be on to something here. Regardless of our political affiliation, I believe most Canadians, would welcome a little more accountability from our elected officials and Parliament. I’d trade a little transparency and openness in government for a roomful of election promises, any day. Tom Carney is the co-ordinator of the Lionsview Seniors’ Planning Society. ADD VALUE TO YOUR HOME THE DIRT ON DIRT

Boost your home’s value Bathroom renos can add a lot to a home’s value — next to the kitchen, a well-designed and maintained bathroom does more than anything else to help boost the price of a home. But if you go overboard, you can end up pouring money down the drain.
Bathrooms, after kitchens, are among the most expensive rooms to renovate. There’s less cabinetry involved in a bathroom and you don’t have major appliances to add to the bill, but plumbing, tubs, tiles and taps aren’t cheap. While kitchen renovations can set you back $50,000 or more, for a new bathroom, you should budget $5,000 to $15,000, experts advise. If your bathroom is more than 10 years old, it is probably in need of a makeover. A quick spruce-up is easy — a colourful shower curtain and accessories such as matching towels, wastepaper basket and bath mat quickly change the mood of the room.
There’s nothing like a fresh coat of paint on the walls to liven up a room at moderate expense. Other budget-friendly ways to change the look of a bathroom would be to install a curved shower rod, new towel bars, door pulls or toilet tank lever. These projects may be small, but still make a big impact on both the style and functionality of the bathroom. “We refer to it as the ‘remodellite’ trend,” says Tim McDonough, a spokesperson for Moen.

“We have noticed consumers don’t want to invest in a major remodelling project, but still want to spruce up the room.“ Old bathroom faucets can be both outdated in style and waterefficiency. New faucets that meet WaterSense criteria reduce water usage by up to 32 per cent without affecting performance. Moen’s M-PACT common valve system allows consumers to change the look of a bathroom quickly.
With this system, people can change the style and finish of their faucets without having to replace the underlying faucet plumbing. “In our experience, most bathroom remodelling projects involve creating more space,” says Andrea Mills, design spokesperson for IKEA. “If you don’t have anywhere to keep your stuff, it will be impossible to maintain a clean, organized bathroom.” She says IKEA has lots of solutions, such as wall-mounted cabinets or open shelves for spaces where storage is an issue. Keeping the plumbing in the existing positions is the least expensive option in any bathroom renovation.
Fixture items such as bathtubs, sinks and toilets can be straightforward to replace as most replacement fixtures follow uniform industry standards. If fixtures need to be moved to use the space more efficiency, not all is lost. “A sink can be moved to a different spot along the same wall without much problem,” says Stew Millett, owner of Miles Plumbing. “Toilets can be moved about a metre — depending on what’s under the toilet — and bathtubs and showers can be moved side to side along a wall as well.
A remodelled bathroom adds value to a house, but the key is to make it appropriate to the price range of houses in the area, advise real estate agents. “Some people embark on a bathroom renovation just before they put a house on the market with a mistaken belief that it will help boost the value of the house,” says Niels Madsen of RE/MAX Alliance. But that’s not always a good idea. Many buyers would rather pay a few thousand dollars less for a house that needs a new bathroom, and choose their own design. And, Madsen stresses: “A new bathroom isn’t any help if the rest of the house needs to be upgraded as well.” PEDRO ARRAIS

KITCHEN AND BATH TRENDS
What’s hot in 2011? The National Kitchen & Bath Association surveyed more than 100 designers during the final three months of 2010.
The results identified seven kitchen and four bathroom trends. LISA KADANE
Kitchens: 1 Shake up
your cabinets Traditional Shaker-style cupboards are making a comeback. They are timeless yet can work in a contemporary kitchen.
2 White kitchens are so last year
Dark finishes are gaining in popularity on cabinets and countertops.
3 Unchilled wine storage
is growing in popularity. No need for a wine fridge; a rack built into the end of your island will do.
4 Side-by-Side freezer
If you’re still using a freezer-on-top (or bottom) refrigerator, it’s time to get with the food storage program. Side-bysides are where it’s at.
5 Induction cooktops
are closing the gap on electric and gas ranges. It seems people like this energy-efficient, no-mess option.
6 LED lights are taking over from incandescents in the kitchen.
7 Trash solutions
Designers are installing garbage and recycling pullouts that look like another set of drawers.
Bathrooms:
Stop dreaming, start saving.
1 Quartz counters
are gaining on granite in new bathroom designs.
2 Spa-like
More homeowners are going spa-like and green — as in the colour — on bathroom walls and finishes.

The scoop for spring PETER FITZMAURICE HAS GOT THE DIRT ON ALL THINGS DIRT.
As the vice president of hard goods merchandising with GardenWorks, Fitzmaurice knows exactly what’s needed — and almost more importantly, what’s not needed — when it comes time to prepare for the impending planting season. April is the ideal times to plant perennials, shrubs, trees and various bulbs. When getting those items into the ground, Fitzmaurice suggests using bone meal or fertilizers with high amounts of phosphate to get them going.
“You want to turn organic material into the soil and I would always suggest planting with bone meal because that gives a nice and strong root system.” Fitzmaurice suggested a 6-8-6 fertilizer as a good starting point. The trio of numbers on the front of the bag of fertilizer represent the three nutrients plants need most to grow: nitrogen, phosphate and potassium. Nitrogen is best suited to aid lawns or leafy plants, while potassium helps develop the plant’s stem, making it more cold and disease resistant. Phosphate is key to ensuring the health of a root system, and helps fruits grow more readily.

Fitzmaurice said the two most common problems he encounters are gardeners who water too much or fail to use the right amounts of soil.
April is the ideal time to plant perennials, shrubs, trees and various bulbs.
“If you’re planting in a pot, always make sure the soil level in the pot ends up at the same soil level in your garden,” he said. “And always allow for a little bit of subsidence. After the soil is compacted or if you’ve watered it in a couple times, it can drop down. So you want to make sure that you are not planting it too deep. Some people also plant too deep and then they put a layer of mulch right up to the stem of the plant, so you’re actually burying the plant deeper than before.”
A wilting stem or ailing plant of any sort usually causes people to think that the No. 1 cause is a lack of water. Not so.
Fitzmaurice added that Mother Nature typically provides all the watering needs for a given plant between the months of March and May. If the weather is unseasonably warm or dry during that time, he suggests moving to watering the plants every day.
IT’S SPRING!
PHOTOS LARRY W RIGHT
“Sometimes people can see something looking stressed, and they automatically assume it’s a lack of water, but it can also be too much water,” Fitzmaurice said. “So a good idea is to dig around and see what’s going on. It could be too deeply planted or it could be too much water.” Peter Fitzmaurice from Garden Works plants daffodils in well-balanced soil.

UNDERSTANDING UNDERGROUND OIL TANKS Many homes built before the 1960s used oil as a heating fuel, with oil tanks buried close to the foundation of a home. Few homes use oil now, and home owners may not realize that they have an old tank on their property. Tanks have an average life of 20 to 25 years, after which they can begin to leak hazardous materials.

Signs that you may have an underground tank include: • A filler pipe sticking out of the ground; • A vent pipe at the side of the house; • The odour of fuel oil in or near building, oil in your sump or externsl drains and/or ditches. Even if these signs are not visible, it is still possible that a tank may exist on your property. Hiring a qualified Oil Tank Contractor is the best way to ensure your property is tank free. A single pinhole leak in a 1,000 gallon fuel storage tank can leak its contents into the environment in less than eight hours contaminating the principle property, groundwater, streams, neighbouring properties and injuring wildlife. Typically 9 out of 10 properties with a free standing above ground tank, also have a buried tank as well. Many lenders & home Insurance companies will insist on the removal of an oil tank, otherwise they may not provide their services.

Talk to partner about finances WHEN was the last time you had a “discussion” about money with a member of the opposite sex? Understanding at least some of the different attitudes and feelings the sexes have concerning their darling dollars can help smooth relationships — whether it’s with a partner, relative or just a good friend. For example, a recent RBC poll (entitled, He Says, She Says) showed men are more focused on saving for retirement while women save for daily needs. “Women are placing more emphasis on taking care of daily needs — often the needs of others — rather than

Uncork the sun in Oliver Osoyoos Wine Country WHAT’S in a name?
Plenty, if you’re B.C.’s principal grape growing region. Over the last six months, the South Okanagan Wineries Association (SOWA) has been on the quest for a new identity. While organizations often rebrand, SOWA’s reasons are more complex. The challenge faced by the group, which includes 21 wineries — from giants like Vincor to small family-owned enterprises such as Castoro De Oro (formerly Golden Beaver) — was to find a real point of distinction (though maybe without being too precise). With 53 per cent of B.C. acreage under vine, the south grows the majority of grapes that go into B.C. wines, regardless of whether they’re made in Summerland or Saanich. That’s a fact not readily apparent on labels, which except in a couple of unofficial cases state only “Okanagan Valley.” In jurisdictional terms, the South Okanagan starts at Peachland and includes Penticton. However, many in the grape-growing community have long felt the real divide to be McIntyre Bluff. The

soaring cliff face just north of Oliver is a natural weather barrier that marks a point where harvest times between the south and some parts of the central valley can differ by as much as two or more weeks. From a wine tourism point of view, SOWA’s new brand makes perfect sense. It’s also deliberately more specific than the recently discarded “Desert Wine Country.” “We’re proud to be here . . . and everyone has a sense of something very special. But we weren’t exactly sure of where ‘here’ is; or rather we haven’t done a very good job of telling consumers about it,” says SOWA president Tim
Martiniuk. He introduced the new brand logo — a red on yellow sunburst of bottles with the slogan “uncork the sun” and “Oliver Osoyoos Wine Country” prominently stated. Oliver Osoyoos Wine Country encompasses the area “from the bluff to the border,” says Martiniuk. It also effectively defines “a sense of place” that’s more appropriate for the province’s “pioneering region in grape growing and winemaking.” It’s a region of benches, that Martiniuk identifies as the “East Benches, (Black Sage); Osoyoos Lake Benches and West Benches (Golden Mile).” They are, says Martiniuk, “three very distinct areas in terms of the micro-climates they contain, the sun exposure they get and the temperatures
they experience.” By redefining and branding the “south” firmly as Oliver and Osoyoos, the association has effectively laid the groundwork for the next stage: dividing the south valley into sub-appellations, based on the benches that Martiniuk identifies. However, while commercial branding, and the tourism dollars it yields, has proved popular in recent years (see Naramata Bench), the more contentious process of identifying and formalizing sub-appellations — that actually tell the consumer about specific grape origin and terroir and identify it on the label — continues to be bogged down. Even though areaspecific names such as “South Okanagan,” “Black

Sage” and “Golden Mile” are increasingly bandied about unofficially, if British Columbia truly wants to be taken seriously in the wine world, it will have to move on sub-appellations sooner rather than later. And not just in the Okanagan.
Witness the evolution that’s taken place in Washington and Oregon, with whom B.C. competes both inside the bottle and out. “Uncork the sun” does have a nice ring to it. But designing the logo may prove to be the easy part.

Second-ranked Eagles flying high this season CARSON Graham Eagles senior boys AAA rugby team lost to Oak Bay 24-5 last weekend but still moved up to second in provincial rankings behind Shawnigan Lake School Stags.
St. George’s School in Vancouver hosted the 19th annual B.C. Secondary Schools’ Rugby Union Invitational ‘Sevens’ Tournament last weekend featuring 18 of B.C.’s top AAA and AA teams. Three North Shore schools were part of the mix with 2008 tournament champions West Vancouver Highlanders and Argyle Pipers participating along with the Eagles. The Highlanders had the toughest assignment,
drawing eventual winners Shawnigan Lake and Robert Bateman in opening round pool play while the Argyle Pipers, who won the Peter Clarke Trophy for most sportsmanlike team, made it to the semifinals where they lost to Earl Marriott 26-7. Carson Graham won both games in pool play defeating Burnaby North 34-0 and Sir Charles Tupper 19-10. They eventually lost out to Oak Bay in the Bronze Medal game. The Stags defeated Courtenay’s G.P. Vanier 31-5 for the Gold. The Plate was lifted by Earl Marriott, the Bowl went to hosts St. George’s and the Shield was captured by Robert Bateman. The West Coast team, made up primarily of North Shore elite players, remains undefeated in preliminary round action at the six-team tournament in St. John’s, NL. In their opening game on Monday, April 18, Sam Reinhart scored a hat trick and added six assists as the Giants tore through the Winnipeg Thrashers 12-5. Reinhart and his linemates combined for 19 points with Alex Kerfoot adding two goals and five assists and Jackson Houck scoring a hat trick of his own as the Giants became the first team since Magog in 2000 to score a dozen goals in a game at the national midget championship. The next day the Giants met the Halifax Titans and dispatched the Atlantic Region representatives 6-1. Wednesday they defeated the host team St. John’s Privateers 4-3 and on Thursday they beat Quebec midget champions Lions du Lac St-Louis 4-2 to clinch first place in the opening round. GAVIN - John Fleming P.Eng. Our beloved husband, father and grandfather, John Fleming Gavin (age 77), passed away April 12th, 2011, in Stratford Ontario after a brief battle with cancer. The only child of William and Elizabeth Gavin, John was born in Forfar, Scotland and lived a wonderful childhood full of mischief ‘on the moors and in the glens’, fiddling, and singing with his golden voice. John was educated in Scotland and served in the Royal Air Force (RAF) and was briefly stationed on St. Kilda. In 1955, while attending the Centennial of the YMCA in Paris, France, he met his future wife Gunnel, from Sweden, both delegates from their respective hometowns. They married in 1959, settling in Sweden where he worked as a civil engineer over the next 8yrs. In 1967, they immigrated to Canada and proudly raised their four children in their West Vancouver home for 38yrs, before spending the last season of his life in Stratford, Ontario. John was a very proud Canadian but an even prouder Scot. He enjoyed a long productive career with B.C. Hydro and H.A. Simons, as well as accomplishments as a long time Board Member of the West Vancouver United Church, President of the Swedish Cultural Society and a past Master of the Adoniram Masonic Lodge of Kerrisdale, but his true success was enjoyed as a loving husband and nurturing father. John was a patient and gentle, well-read man with an insatiable appetite for history and geneaology. He was a selfless family man who lived the mantra ‘blood is thicker than water’ - he would do anything for his family! John left an indelible example of work ethic, principals, loyalty and unconditional love on his children and everyone he knew. He is survived by his devoted wife of 51yrs, Gunnel, their four children - Ian (Anne), Patrick (Booja), Katarina Pohl (Frank), Margareta Skulsky (Ian), and seven grandchildren Jonathan, Katrianna, Gina, Johan, Jensen, Anna, Annika. Left to grieve are also his sisterin-law Berit Roseng and nephew Erik Roseng of Norway and family and friends throughout Canada, Scotland, Sweden, Finland and USA. A private family funeral will be held at Knox Presbyterian Church, Stratford, Ontario, April 23rd. “May the wind always be at your back.” Rest in peace beloved John.

KETTYLS - George Donald Morison, B.Sc., MD., FRCP© Sept 1, 1926- March 21, 2011 Born in Edmonton, Don grew up in Alberta with sisters Alva and Cathy and brother Ross, children of Rev. George And Mrs. Catherine Kettyls. Don served with the Royal Canadian Engineers in W.W. II and upon discharge entered the U of Alberta to study medicine. Following graduation, Don spent two years as a general practitioner of medicine in B.C. Don’s interest in infectious diseases was advanced when he accepted a position to establish and direct a diagnostic laboratory for the provincial government. The purpose was to isolate and identify viruses causing disease and to investigate and implement methods of prevention and control of such diseases. In his distinguished career in public health, Dr. Kettyls left a significant legacy, advancing knowledge of viruses and by helping establish a number of community health facilities throughout the province of BC, including the Williams Lake Health Centre. As a Clinical Associate Professor at U.B.C., Don was involved in teaching medical students, residents, laboratory scientists and nurses. As principal author or contributor, Dr. Kettyls was involved in the publication of several scientific papers, which are still referenced in textbooks used in medical schools today. Don married his loving wife Barbara (Bird) in 1952. Together they raised three sons, Kim, Sean and Roger. When they became 'empty nesters,' Barbara and Don travelled together to scientific meetings or vacation to Europe, the Middle East and North America. Don’s passions included his membership in the Winston Churchill Society, walks on the Dundarave Seawall and hot chocolate at Brazza on Lonsdale. Family, friends and colleagues alike will sorely miss Don’s brilliant investigative mind, keen wit, gentle nature and love of history, limericks and storytelling. Predeceased by Mother and Father and sisters Alva and Inez, and wife Barbara, Don leaves to mourn his passing, brother Ross, sister Cathy Pringle, Niece and Nephew, Beth and Ross Pringle, sons Kim (Debbie) and grandchildren Harrison and Trinity; Sean (Liberty) and grandchildren Kieran and Brandon, and son Roger (predeceased fiance´e Sandra). Services will be held Saturday, April 30 at 2:00 p.m. at First Memorial, Boal Chapel, 1505 Lillooet Rd., North Vancouver, B.C. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Meals on Wheels North Shore.
NIXON, Jennifer 'Jenny' Mavis Leedham (Hobbs) July 3, 1922 - April 14, 2011 Jenny will be fondly remembered by her friends and family at a Memorial Service to be held 2:00 pm, May 27 at St. Francis in the Woods, West Vancouver. Born in Peace River, Alberta she lived in Edmonton, Victoria, Montreal, and happily spent the last 50 years in West Vancouver. She was a Vancouver Arts School graduate and enjoyed sharing her artistic enthusiasm with others. She belonged to many volunteer organizations including the Vancouver Playhouse Guild, the Francescans, the Engineers Wives Association, and St. Margaret’s School Old Girls. Jenny was an avid treasure hunter and never missed a good rummage sale. She loved sprucing up her garden with floral arrangements that lasted all year round. Jenny was always delighted to meet new people and had many friends throughout her life. A dear friend once said 'If Jenny was ever marooned on a desert island she would surely know the cannibal king’s aunt!' She is survived by her husband George, daughters Kate (David) Onyschuk and Betsy (Michael) Davies and grandchildren Thomas, Jennifer, Isabel and Benjamin. SCHEER, Roger 1938 - 2011 It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our very dear husband, dad, grandpa, brother and uncle, Roger Scheer. Roger is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Nancy, daughter Maria (Tim), son Scott (Rhonda), adored grandchildren Rachael and Sean, sister Darleen (Elie), brother Don (Kelly) and many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles. “The Rog” as he was affectionately known, was an owner of a Budget Brake and Muffler franchise for over 30 years. He will be sadly missed by his many friends and loyal customers. Join us for a celebration of life at Seymour United Church, 1200 Parkgate Avenue, North Vancouver on Friday April 29th, 2011 at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation would be greatly appreciated.

Q.
My husband died a couple months ago and I feel I would benefit from some information and support to help me deal with my grief. Is there a North Shore program I could attend?
A.
The North Shore Grief Recovery program offers sessions throughout the year to help people come to term with their loss. The next session will begin on May 3rd in Edgemont Village and will run for six consecutive Tuesdays from 7-9pm. Each evening includes information about normal, healthy grieving, plus opportunities for discussion and peer support. Program fee is $120 (fee may be reduced in case of financial hardship). For information and registration call 604-979-1600, or visit www.lmgr.ca
