NORTH Vancouver’s police chief is leaving the detachment little more than two years after she took up the job. RCMP Supt. Tonia Enger broke the news to members of the force and the community’s SUPT. Enger: “. . . this two municipal councils last week. Enger, who particular opportunity is took over as chief in February 2009, will be only going to come once stepping down in mid-August to enroll in a in my career. . . .” year-long educational program based outside British Columbia. “It’s unfortunate that I am moving on as early as I am, but I do have to look after my career,” she said, in an interview with the North Shore News. “I think from a broader perspective, it’s an area that I have a gap in regards to education.” Enger didn’t name the program — like many police officers, she’s cautious

about revealing exactly where and when she’ll be in her off hours — but described it as a graduate-level course at the Canadian Forces College that focuses on strategic issues in policy making and politics. Only a select few individuals are invited to join, she said. Enger, who has switched detachments more than a dozen times in a 24-year career, said on her arrival in North Vancouver that her assumption of command here would mark an end to an itinerant phase. In an interview with the North Shore News in May that year, she said she had “no intention of going anywhere.” That plan changed, however, when Enger was approached by the head of the Canadian Forces program about two months ago, she explained. She had been “exploring educational opportunities” for about a year, she said, and when this one came along, it was too good to pass up. “My intentions were to stay here,” said Enger. “I have been approached on a number of fronts to take other opportunities and moves beyond this one, and I’ve said ‘No.’ But . . . I know this particular opportunity is only going to come once in my career . . . I don’t think anyone would have turned down.” The response from her colleagues and employers has been positive on the whole, she said. “Some of the reaction is of course disappointed that I’m moving on, but it’s also very supportive that I’m trying to expand my horizons.” City of North Vancouver Mayor Darrell Mussatto admitted the move surprised him, but said on the whole it wouldn’t be disruptive for the detachment or the community.
But for Wyee — a Telus employee who drives across the Lower Mainland each day to install TVs, phones and Internet connections in homes — the region’s rising gas prices cut too deep into his paycheques. “It’s tough. I’m filling up about three times a week and it’s just too expensive,” said Wyee, who plans to move back

WHEN Dan Wyee moved to B.C. from Calgary last year, he never thought gas prices would be forcing him to move back home.
