Saxton won the riding with 28,998 votes, finishing with 48.6 per cent of the total votes cast. Saxton defeated Liberal challenger Taleeb Noormohamed, who finished with 17,665 votes. NDP candidate Michael Charrois finished in third place with 9,618 votes. All numbers are unofficial until certified by Elections Canada. CONSERVATIVE incumbent John Weston won the West Vancouver-Sunshine Coast-Sea to Sky Country riding handily Monday, collecting 28,711 votes, or 45 per cent of the total votes cast. NDP hopeful Terry Platt finished with 14,812 votes, narrowly edging Liberal candidate Dan Veniez, who finished with 14,103 votes.

All numbers are unofficial until certified by Elections Canada. FEDERALL Approximately 64 per cent of eligible voters cast ballots in the riding. The results mirrored the Conservative triumph across Canada that resulted in 20 11 Stephen Harper’s first majority government. The NDP will form the official Opposition, having made huge gains in Quebec at the expense of the Bloc Québecois. The Liberals suffered losses across the country and saw its vote share dip below 19 per cent, compared to the NDP’s 31 per cent. Weston, speaking in a buzzing campaign office as the first results came in Monday night, said he was happy to run on achievements like bringing investment into the economy and supporting a bill to

Sporting a Canucks jersey, Weston attributed the Conservative victory to Canadians “rallying around a leader who is tested and true.” Weston also won the riding in 2008, when he received 26,949 votes to fend off Liberal challenger Ian Sutherland, who finished with 16,069 votes. NDP candidate Bill Forst received 14 per cent of votes cast in the 2008 election. NDP candidate Terry Platt, who received 23 per cent of votes cast in the riding, attributed the ascendance of the NDP and the collapse of the Liberal party to Canadians wanting an effective

Harper’s leadership during what Saxton called “the great recession.” Saxton thanked the three levels of government in North Vancouver for working together through different political affiliations to support infrastructure in the riding. Shaking hands under a black and blue sky, Saxton said he looked forward FEDERALL to working with the new official Opposition led by NDP leader Jack Layton. “I work out with him in 20 11 the same gym in Ottawa and I can tell you he’s a feisty guy, and he’ll keep us on our toes.” Asked if he slept the night before the election, Saxton said: “I did sleep last night, but I may not sleep tonight,” before offering to buy a drink for all his supporters and campaign workers. Noormohamed, holding court in a noticeably more sombre campaign office just up the street, attributed his loss to the division among moderates and left-wing voters. “If progressive-minded folks had rallied together, we would’ve taken this riding by a large number,” he said. Asked about the future of Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff, Noormohamed said the party needs to go in another direction. “It comes down to connecting with Canadians,” he said. “It’s pretty clear the party needs to revitalize itself.” Noormohamed, who had just congratulated Saxton on winning after a “clean campaign,” said NEWS photo Cindy Goodman Saxton’s first priority should be freeing the North Vancouver man who’s been in a jail in Mexico NORTH Vancouver Liberal candidate Taleeb Noormohamed says his party needs to revitalize itself without trial for three years. in the wake of Monday’s crushing defeat and implied it should ditch leader Michael Ignatieff. “I think job 1 is to get Pavel Kulisek home,” candidate Greg Dowman was jubilant following the election. he said. “We made it,” he said, discussing Green Party leader Elizabeth May’s victory NDP candidate Michael Charrois had a one-word summation of his party’s in the Saanich-Gulf Islands riding. performance in becoming the official Opposition: “Wow.” “It was the dedication of Elizabeth and her crew, and they just pounded it,” “We’ve increased 100 per cent,” he said. THE North Shore News is best in Canada.

The paper has been judged the best overall newspaper in Canada in its circulation class (the largest) in the Canadian Community Newspapers Association’s Better Newspapers Competition. The decision was announced Friday evening. The News has won the award previously in 1999, 2002, 2003, 2007 and 2008. In 2004 and 2005 it made the finalists’ short list, in 2006 it placed third and in 2010 finished second. “What an amazing track record we have established. What a great tribute to the team at the North Shore News that a jury of our peers in the newspaper business recognize our paper’s continued commitment to excellence,” said publisher Doug Foot. Reporter Jane Seyd finished third in the competition for Best Feature Series, circulation 12,500 and over. It was a weekend of award presentations, with the British Columbia Yukon Community Newspapers Association announcing placements in its annual Ma Murray Awards competition and Newspapers Canada honouring winners in the 2011 Great Ideas competition on Saturday. NV journalist vanishes in Syria

Family of Handsworth grad fear she is being held by government James Weldon

THE family of a North Vancouver journalist who vanished in Syria on Friday say they still know nothing about her whereabouts or condition after four agonizing days.

FRIENDS and family of Dorothy Parvaz have created a Free Dorothy Parvaz page on Facebook.

Dorothy Parvaz, a reporter for the Al Jazeera news network, disappeared Friday after disembarking from a Qatar Airways flight in Damascus. The 39-year-old had flown into the country from Doha, where the network is based, to report on events there. According to the passenger manifest, she got off her plane, but her employers say she never made it to her hotel. Parvaz’s family fear she is being held by the Syrian government, which has been clamping down violently on dissidents and members of the media in response to the widespread protests that have rocked the country in recent weeks. “I’m very deeply concerned,” said Parvaz’s father, Fred, a longtime North Vancouver resident and a professor at Capilano University. “I hope someone has enough compassion to give us some news — or just to let her go. She’s hasn’t done anything to deserve this.” Since learning of his daughter’s disappearance on Saturday, Fred and other family members have been pressing authorities in Canada and the United States — where Parvaz’s fiance lives

— and the Canadian embassy in Syria for information, but have so far learned nothing, he said. “We have no idea,” said Fred. “We know that she touched down. The only reason we know that is because her name is on the manifest. . . . She was probably detained in the airport.” When he last spoke with his daughter on Thursday, she seemed to be doing fine, giving no indication that she was concerned for her safety or even that she was heading to Syria the next day, he said. Parvaz’s friends have started a Facebook page, Free Dorothy Parvaz, and have advertised the incident through other social media in an effort to raise awareness of her plight. By Tuesday, the Facebook page had collected more than 2,300 supporters. Al Jazeera has also been working hard on her behalf, said Fred. The network has been in regular contact with authorities and with the family, and has reported extensively on her disappearance, dedicating a section of its English-language home page to the story. The New York Times, the Washington Post, Fox News and other major outlets have similarly picked up the thread. Fred said he believes his daughter’s detention has touched a chord with many members of her profession. “Journalists are the target of a lot of governments,” he said. “They want to shoot the messenger.” Parvaz, who moved with her family to North Vancouver from Iran when she was 12, graduated from Handsworth secondary before going on to study English literature at UBC and completing a masters of journalism at the University of Arizona. Parvaz has since worked at a number of print outlets, including See Incident page 5

At 8 p.m., Mayor and Council will present the Youth Appreciation Awards, celebrating our young leaders who have made significant volunteer contributions to the local or global community.

Mark Smith, 32, was last seen at about 2 p.m. Sunday just before he set out for the forested area near the top of Riverside Drive. When the Coquitlam resident failed to return as expected at 4 p.m., his friends got worried and contacted police. Smith had made comments in the past that had led them to be concerned for his safety, according to investigators. They did not specify what those

Mark Smith comments were. Smith’s vehicle was found abandoned at the end of Riverside Monday morning. Police, members of North Shore Rescue and other volunteers spent much of the day scouring the Seymour River canyon and nearby trails for any

sign of the missing man, while coast guard vessels searched the waters near the mouth of Lynn Creek in case he had fallen in and been swept downstream. The operation continued until nightfall, and resumed Tuesday morning. Police were planning to bring in divers to search some of the deeper pools in the river Wednesday. “We have found absolutely nothing,” said Cpl. Peter DeVries, a spokesman for the North Vancouver RCMP. “As the minutes and days tick by, our sense of concern continues to grow.” Smith, five feet ten inches tall and about 175 pounds, was last seen wearing jeans, sneakers, a light shirt and possibly a dark jacket. “This is out of character for him to go up into the forest,” said DeVries. “It’s not like he’s an avid hiker.”

Final tally C

ONGRATULATIONS to our returning MPs Andrew Saxton and John Weston on holding their seats so convincingly, and to the Conservative Party of Canada on forming our next federal government. Socialist or not, Liberal or not, Green or not, many Canadians will be relieved to have electoral uncertainty out of the way. There is no constitutional crisis threatening to engulf Parliament Hill, no coalition of power being propped up by the Bloc Québecois — in fact there is barely a Bloc at all. Canada’s political landscape may have dramatically changed, but at least it is fixed. Jack Layton did what late polls suggested he would and handily won

the key to the front door of Stornoway House. Clearly he connected with voters in Quebec and those Canadians tired of negative campaigning. A gentlemanly socialist, Layton has what passes for charisma in the land of the Maple Leaf. Stephen Harper might lack it, but he and his party organizers ran a masterful campaign, staying onmessage throughout. As for the sorry showing by the Liberals, it will take a messiah of a more populist nature to lead them out of the wilderness created by Adscam. Clearly Michael Ignatieff was never able to escape the intellectual dilettante label hung on him by the Tories. Ultimately, he proved as incapable as Stéphane Dion at reading the road map back to 24 Sussex Drive.

Parallel a private health care system

Dear Editor: With renewed interest in health care you may wish to Google “OECD Canada Health Care 2010.” The stories you will find tell a clear, straightforward, but rather sad story. This non-political economic review of Canada also compared our health care to that of the European countries, all with universal health care. In the last 12 years they have left us behind, having 50 per cent more physicians, twice as much advanced diagnostic equipment and twice as many hospital beds. They have short wait times and quality service. They too faced unsustainable health costs. To cope, all moved to various types of public/private systems but retained the universal coverage. Even Sweden, the great socialist nation, moved to a parallel public/private system 10 years ago. This resulted in a 10 per cent lowering of their public system costs without reduction of quality.

The Liberals dropped the federal share of health care from 25 per cent to 12 per cent by 2003, and we fell behind the Europeans. By 2004, they finally started to add six per cent per year — which the Conservatives have continued. This however only makes up for the yearly rise in costs. We need a five-year catch up effort with a 50/50 contribution from the federal government and the provinces starting now. We must also increase medical graduates each year by 50 per cent and double the number of hospital beds and equipment. We need an efficiency search as to why we have the fifth highest cost per person, but rate well down the list in overall health care. Finally, we should get on with revising the economics of our system, as Sweden and Australia did by establishing a parallel private system. Wally Thomas M.D. West Vancouver

Mountain bike trails are not ‘adopted’ for others

Dear Editor: Gabriel Mazoret, in his April 24 letter to the editor Giving Credit Where Due, clearly does not understand the real purpose behind the North Shore Mountain Bike Association’s “new” trail adoption program (TAP). Unlike the many trail adoption programs initiated by the Federation of Mountain Clubs B.C. and others upstanding groups, the NSMBA has started its TAP for purely selfish purposes. The NSMBA clearly states on their Trail Adoption Plan web page: “We are a voice for the mountain biking community of the North Shore. We develop and sustain a network of trails that provide opportunity for challenge and progression, while fostering mountain bike culture. . . .” Does this sound like the NSMBA is building trails for other forest users to enjoy? Mountain bike trails include the building of “Disneyfied” amusement park-like structures for sole use

CONTACT US

by the mountain bikers. Mountain bike trails are not “hiker-friendly” trails. The NSMBA’s mission has always been “dedicated to the preservation of trails for bikers on the North Shore of Vancouver.” Bikers. No one else! We have a very aggressive self-interest group that continues to “jump queue” like it has been doing for years. The District of North Vancouver’s questionable support of NSMBA’s TAP venture and other mountain biking venues on its public land clearly makes a sham out of fair and democratic public process, to the detriment of other forest users and stakeholders. It doesn’t help to ensure the ongoing ecological integrity of our flora and fauna, either. The NSMBA/DNV “partnership” is, in effect, commercializing and privatizing our public forests and parkland. Is this really what Gabriel Mazoret and other district citizens want? Monica Craver, North Vancouver

The staff are excellent and do all they can within the law. The law is the problem. My wife had lung cancer. Her body pain was taken care of with ever-increasing doses of medicine. The mental anguish, her repeated calls of “I want to go home”; “When will I be better?” could not be answered. When she could no longer take anything past her throat and medicine was given by injection and breathing was so difficult, she managed to live another week. To the people who make these laws, I say: May God have mercy on you, because I will not. Why do we show more mercy to pets when they are ill and allow them to be put to sleep? I am indeed telling this tale with a sigh

“Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And, sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could. . . .” The Road Not Taken, Robert Frost

ONCE left behind, it is said you can never really return home.

Just Asking

Yet, as I fought sleep enough to watch the wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton and saw excited Londoners and tourists gathering on the streets I had walked so often, I grew homesick for the places of my childhood. The dilemma Robert Frost described in The Road Not Taken is one I know well. This way? Or that? Now or later? So why no hesitation about my barely-considered decision to leave England for Canada? I did not look down the diverging roads very far, but that was to be one of only a few life-altering decisions I have not lived to regret or even second-guess — until recently when a 55-year-old hex came home to roost. A week or so before I sailed for Quebec on the second voyage of the Empress of Britain, my father drove my mother and me through the springtime orchards of Kent. Along the way, as Dad slowed his pride and joy — a 1930something Standard Flying 12

— he waved at acres of appleblossoms and said tersely, “When you’re over there, just remember this and think about what you left behind.” To this day, I don’t know if the comment was made out of anger that I was escaping an uncomfortable nest, or because he knew no other way to say he wanted me to stay. What I do know is that my father’s words have increasingly come to mind, and I’m not sure why. Is it because I wanted to join those crowds and walk again the streets of my London? Or is it because my younger brother Bruce recently moved from Dorset to Cheltenham, a Cotswold town where he and I spent too few years of our earliest childhood? Bruce’s move had already sparked happy thoughts of Cheltenham’s Cleeve Hill where, climbing down through the ever-present mists of its flat peak — an impressive 330 metres — I was allowed to walk between

two draft horses and hold their bridles as we returned them to their stables. For years I have understood that many of my memories are triggered by the scents of days gone by. So even now I remember the smell of the horses’ leathers, the jangle of their bits and the steam that rose from their huge flanks. But then came September 1939 and our country childhood was abruptly ended when we moved to London. As I write this in the shadow of Frost’s words, I have realized that, had my parents looked down that road as far as they could and taken another way, our lives might have been very different — and happier. But perhaps the roads not taken were there to be travelled, and ignored, well before my brother and I arrived. Born within the sound of the bells of St. Mary-leBow Church, in the one square mile that is the City of London, Dad was fiercely

proud that he was a true Cockney, and of the city itself. Was that why he moved us into the heart of the Second World War? Whatever the answer, it was not long before his children were evacuated to Yorkshire — far from the relentless enemy bombing. Barely six and three years old, my brother and I were scared and had no way of understanding why we’d been sent away so abruptly. When our parents discovered that, against their wishes, we had been billeted with different families and that I was carrying meals and medicine to a man bedridden with tuberculosis, they arrived to take us home. Today’s psychologists would likely say the rescue came too late. The eightmonth separation had already done its damage, and our family never truly bonded again. These thoughts and so many more tumbled through my mind as I stayed awake watching the Royal wedding.

Giant hogweed is a dangerous invader Hugh Hamilton

Contributing writer

Be ready to climb.

SPRING is finally here and we are watching our garden plants and trees flushing with beautiful flowers and bright green spring leaves. You may be noticing the roadside vegetation coming into leaf as the days get longer, and you will also be eagerly watching your favourite bushes and plants coming into bloom. At the same time, many plants not natural to British Columbia will also be sprouting. Many of these plants are invading our natural environment, our gardens, parks and open spaces. We have accepted some of these non-native species, such as English ivy and Himalayan blackberry, since these plants have become so well established as to be part of the scenery we view every day. But there are other invasive plants which are insidiously moving into our urban environment, such as Japanese knotweed, giant

hogweed, Scotch broom, butterfly bush and creeping dead nettle. You may well have seen these plants but you may not have recognized them for the danger they represent to our communities. Our provincial government, local governments and various agencies are fighting many of these invasive plants and are trying to make the public more aware of the gravity of the situation. There are three weeds in particular that have spread indiscriminately on the North Shore during the last few years, despite the efforts of local government and volunteer groups to

try to contain and control them. Japanese knotweed, giant hogweed and Scotch broom are far from being the exclusive problem plants, but they are plants which seem to have been given the most attention by local governments and interested North Shore groups. One of the most invasive and undesirable of these plants on the North Shore is giant hogweed. A native of the Caucasus mountains and southwestern Asia, this plant was introduced into Western Europe, the United Kingdom and North America as an ornamental garden plant due to its beautiful umbrella of lovely white flowers. It turned out to be not such a nice plant. It became vigorous and invasive in its new environments, but it had other characteristics for which it became despised and are now a concern to our local governments. It is most important to be able to recognize this plant, not only from its towering height of up to five metres and its lovely umbrella of white flowers, but also in its younger years when it is

The marijuana debate is a complex issue

My question is quite controversial and I hope it doesn’t just get scuffled away because of its subject matter. I would like to state that I am not a sympathizer nor an activist of marijuana, I simply think there is a lot people do not know, and really should. I recently watched an educational movie called The Union that deals with common misconceptions about marijuana and the many myths spread around over the years. It really opened my eyes to a lot of things that I totally didn’t expect. Do your readers know that marijuana has no deaths attributed to it at all? Why does it make sense that we legalize things like alcohol or cigarettes that continue to kill numerous people, but we criminalize something which provides known health benefits, an alternative to cutting down forests for paper, a cheaper fuel alternative to other bio fuels and something which has never claimed a life? Do you agree with this law yourself? Matt Crompton North Vancouver Dear Matt, I agree with you that this is clearly one of our nation’s big controversial issues. As such, it is an important one to discuss, and I think your question is

Ask a Cop

Peter DeVries valuable. But it is difficult for me to respond adequately to your question. Although I have a fair bit of experience in dealing with marijuana under current laws as a patrol cop, I have limited expertise on marijuana as a multi-faceted issue that encompasses medical, social, environmental, political and legal disciplines. In a very real sense, you are petitioning someone who would be far out of his league to presume to answer with any authority on the larger issue. That said, when I started this column, I committed to answering any question from the public that the editor sends to me, no matter how complex or controversial, and so, since this is technically a “column,” I will wade in with an opinion, albeit in a more general manner. As members of a democratic society, we collectively bear a

huge responsibility in ensuring that when it comes to making decisions about law and policy on issues such as marijuana, we must do so with the deepest wisdom and with the greatest of prudence. I say this because to stab wantonly at these kinds issues without education and careful consideration does a disservice to our society and risks pointing us in the wrong direction, to say nothing of the harm that might be caused by poorly made decisions. For this reason, I believe that our leading thinkers in political, scientific, philosophical, economic, medical and other fields must bear the responsibility of debating this issue. We, as citizens, have not only the right to influence this process, but also, I would argue, a responsibility to engage in the issue, much as you are doing, Matt. This is a difficult task in our current social climate; the volume of opinions and ideas to which we have access is unprecedented. We must be extremely diligent in filtering truth from propaganda and opinion from fact. That said, we must also be prepared to acquiesce to the authority of the decisions of our leaders, even if we ultimately disagree with them. These community leaders must assess information from established experts that is

based on tested and proven science, exhaustively debated assertions, comprehensive case studies and so on, before they can begin to stand with confidence behind one opinion or another. Otherwise they risk adding to the cacophony

....many more gift ideas

of emotional, partisan and self-interested opinions already being voiced from both sides of the argument. All this, of course, assumes that there is one single answer to the various questions around this debate. In my experience,

remain viable in the soil for up to six years. The reason to be cautious in approaching or cutting this plant is that all parts of the plant contains a clear watery sap that can cause a reaction on the skin, creating redness, swelling and lesions. This is especially so if the skin is exposed to sunlight. It is not wise therefore to break or bend the leaves or cut the stems of the plant. If you do contact this plant with your hands or exposed parts of your body, be sure to wash any exposed parts with soap and water as soon as possible. Should the sap enter your eye, irrigate and seek professional medical help as soon as possible The District of West Vancouver has been monitoring and mapping the locations of giant hogweed for several years, and it has maintained a control program by cutting back the growing weed during the summer months.

recognized by its large rhubarb-sized leaves. Giant hogweed is so named because of its huge growth in height — which it reaches on maturity in the third or fourth year of its growth. It has a sturdy but hollow stem, often four to five inches in diameter at its maximum growth, and it has large leaves which are heavily indented. Young plants may not have flowering heads, but the rhubarb-sized leaves are recognizable by the heavily incised form. The mature plant supports beautiful white flowers from late June through July and August. Don’t pick them! The umbrella of flowers changes to a head of seeds in late August and through September. The heads support many thousands of seeds that can

This program has helped hold back the spread of this noxious weed and has reduced the possibility of unintentional human contact with the plant. The District of West Vancouver is also working towards developing a policy on invasive plant species by 2012. If you notice hogweed on municipal land, you can call the parks department at 604-925-7192 to report your sighting, and most importantly give the location of the hogweed plant. The District of North Vancouver has undertaken a mapping and GPS study of all district natural parkland, and that includes a layer of information specific to invasive plant species infestations. This mapping project identified approximately 20 hectares of municipal parkland dominated by invasive species. In 2010, the district conducted a pilotscale project to evaluate the effectiveness of manual versus specialized treatment methods

for the eradication of a number of invasive species. In 2011, the district is planning a comprehensive approach to combining all available district and community assets to launch a co-ordinated response to the threat of invasive species. For more information on the North Vancouver Species Control Program contact the environmental service office at 604-9902365 or the parks department at 604-9903810. We need everyone’s help to control this noxious plant from travelling any further into our communities.

Hugh Hamilton lives in West Vancouver. He is a retired professional forester with an active interest in natural history and streamkeeping. Through these interests he is working with a number of groups to fight the incursion of invasive species on the North Shore, and especially giant hogweed.

comprehend the various sides of this issue. We also sympathize with the efforts of those who wish to influence public policy on this and any other issue, and continue to commit to defend those rights with the same vigour as that with which we enforce drug laws and take illegal drugs off our streets. Of course, this includes the right to peaceful protest and lawful political activism. Overall, my response as a police officer must be considered in the context of my role in society. In Canadian law, marijuana possession is illegal. Anyone who chooses to possess it can and likely will be arrested. This is not because the police have an opinion on the law. It is because we are employed to enforce it, without prejudice and free from personal bias. Until we, as a society, decide that the law should change, that is what the police must, and will, do. Cpl. YOUR NORTH SHORE GUIDE to HOME & GARDEN

Debunk those common garden myths IT seems to me that there are several myths about spring gardening that continue to be told as fact when they are actually incorrect and based on antiquated traditions. One of the most common myths about spring gardening tasks is the one that says, “Remove all of the old mulch from the garden beds and compost it.” Perhaps there is some lack of understanding of what the purpose of mulch is, or maybe people are talking about removing mulch that is used in very cold climates for winter protection. The truth is that mulch Dig Deep should be maintained year Todd Major round on the soil to protect and enhance soil fertility and to prevent weed growth. Even if we were talking about mulch on the veggie garden, it still makes no sense to remove mulch. Our gardens would be healthier and more sustainable if the mulch was shuffled aside to allow planting and then shuffled back around the new plants to act as the protective layer it is supposed to be. I believe this incorrect and unnecessary philosophy of removing mulch from the garden in spring originated back in the 1950s at a time when the perception of cleanliness in the garden was more important than sustainability, low maintenance and soil health. There is no negative affect to having mulch on garden beds year round. Mulch does not carry diseases, nor does it promote sow bugs or carpenter ants and mulch does not get worse as it degrades, rather mulch improves like fine wine as it ages, because it turns into soil and food for plants. Another myth associated with the removal of mulch from the beds is: “Top-dress the beds with new soil or compost.” If we are talking about nutrient-poor soils, the veggie garden or an annual display bed in a public park or garden, then perhaps top dressing or amending is justified. However, if we are talking about the average residential garden bed that has been planted for several years and is actively growing full of trees, shrubs and perennials, then there is no reason to remove the mulch and topdress the bed with manure or compost. No tree, shrub or perennial plant needs to be fed every single year if its soil has average fertility and structure and is mulched. One of the problems of top dressing and amending garden soils every year is the risk of adding so much organic matter to the soil that the soil becomes excessively organic to the point that nutrient excesses and pH problems occur. Most healthy soils should contain no more than 10 to 20 per cent organic matter or the aforementioned fertility problems will occur. Soil improves over time if left alone and mulched — just like the zero-till approach that many farmers and permaculturists use. See more page 15

Smart phones store location data LATELY there has been a lot of press surrounding the possibility that Apple and Google, amongst others, are inappropriately gathering personal location data from their devices.

Digital Age

Steve Dotto

The issue is relevant because our newest generations of smart phones are smart enough to know where they are at any

time. This means that data could possibly be captured and used in some way. Both Apple and Google are adamant that they are not using this capability to collect any personal location data. It is an interesting situation, and one that we will be looking at for some time to come. While privacy is an increasing concern, the potential benefits of the location-based services that See Phone page 14

Phone has built-in GPS From page 13 result from these capabilities are very compelling as well. For example, I have a close friend, a school teacher, who had a very disappointing yet intriguing experience the other day. Entering her office she noticed her handbag open and upon inspection, found that her iPhone was missing. She remembered it being in her handbag when she arrived at school, but she did not want to suspect a student. To make sure the phone didn’t fall out in her car, she went out to her car, searched it and then moved it a block away before returning to her office. You are probably wondering why she moved the car. It is because, as soon as she returned to her office, she launched an application called Mobile Me on her computer to check the location of her iPhone. MobileMe is Apple’s suite of tools designed for your cellphone. Included are a lot of productivity tools, for syncing or backing up your phone. A location tracking feature is also included. The iPhone has a built-in GPS, which reports its location if you have permission to view it. My friend had set that up on her account so she was able to see her phone, and there it was, still located at the school. Not wanting to approach administration until

she knew who had taken the phone, our heroine called her husband who drove to the school and parked waiting for the end of the school day. Once the kids were dismissed, our intrepid Inspector Clouseau returned to her office, fired up Mobile Me and tracked her phone on its way. She coached her husband to turn left on Kingsway, right on Victoria etc. until the phone stopped and they knew the address of the kid who had pilfered it. Net result: bad kid caught, her iPhone found its way home! The poor kid, of course, paid a stiff price, but what a tremendous example of the usable power of this technology. Here, a high school teacher and her husband could have been the central characters in an episode of 24 as they used consumer technology to solve a crime. This is just the tip of the iceberg when we consider the benefits of having location-aware smart phones. We can understand that Apple, Google and all the manufacturers see the potential and will make sure that these services find their way into products and ultimately into our hands. I doubt that they will take the chance at inappropriately capturing private information, and losing the trust of the public. Steve Dotto is host of Dotto Tech, Wednesdays at 6 p.m. on AM 650. A Natural Face Lift Acupuncture face lift is a natural alternative for individuals seeking to remove facial wrinkles. HOW IT WORKS The face is stimulated to increase natural collagen production, tighten tone and regain firmness and natural skin colour. This is done using acupuncture, tui na (massage), microcurrent stimulation and herbs. Floramin anti-wrinkle creams and toners, a natural skincare line made in Canada, are used exclusively for the best results. Dr. Tahmineh Nikookar has performed this ancient Chinese treatment for over 10 years and was among the first to re-introduce it to clients in British Columbia. Said by one of her clients on the treatment, “I highly recommend acupuncuture facial rejuvenation, the results are amazing. The sessions are relaxing and there is no downtime. No need to add fertilizer to garden in spring From page 13

NEWS photo Mike Wakefield

PLACING a thick blanket of mulch in your garden keeps the moisture in and weeds down.

Another misleading and environmentally damaging spring garden myth is: “Fertilize in spring because plants are actively growing or beginning growth.” Plants and lawns do not require fertilizer every year. Spring growth of most plants comes from energy stored in the bud. This, combined with high rainfall periods of West Coast springs, leads to the fertilizer not being used initially by plants. Rainfall leaches the fertilizer into groundwater and ultimately the ocean where it creates algal bloom and dead zones in the marine environment. Plants and lawns do not require fertilizer every spring. I have never fertilized my garden in 14 years and as was illustrated by the photo of my front yard in this column on April 6, my plants are healthy and robust. Also incorrect is the myth that acid-loving plants should have acid fertilizers spread around them in spring. Our West Coast soils are already acidic, due to the high rainfall we receive and no further acidification is required, so stop wasting your money on acidifiers for the soil. Another misleading myth

damaged shoot tips do not recover. Perennials should be divided before new growth begins to prevent damage to new shoots. Almost all perennials are best divided in fall after dormancy occurs or in late winter (February) before growth begins. Perennials that are winter blooming or

marginally hardy in our region should not be divided in winter; these plants should be divided before growth begins in spring to avoid winter damage. The moral of this story is that a little knowledge grows a long way in the garden. stmajor@shaw.ca

Why not put together a very simple and striking flower arrangement? Most of the work for this floral display is done ahead of time. Just pick up some fresh tulips Home Ideas the day you plan to give it to her and you are set. The Barb Lunter results are beautiful and the arrangement should last a week or so. Materials: 1 large clear cylinder vase 1 smaller clear cylinder vase (to fit inside) Sweetheart candies (or another favourite) 3-4 bunches of fresh tulips Clear elastic band or floral wire Purchase some miniature candies at your local dollar store or a specialty store like Sugar, on Marine Drive in West Vancouver, which carries a fabulous selection of nostalgic candy. Place your smaller cylindrical vase inside the larger one and fill the candies around the edges of the inside vase. (This can be done a few days ahead of time.) On the day you plan to give the fresh arrangement to your mother, purchase your tulips and remove them from the clear packaging. After you snip the elastic bands from the bottom, take two or three centimetres off the ends to give the tulips a fresh cut. Pick up one tulip in your left hand and begin to add the remaining flowers one by one as you rotate the tulips. Once you are done, a dome shape should appear. Secure the stems with an elastic band or floral wire. Place the hand-held bouquet into the centre vase that has been filled with tap water at room temperature. Place a card on the outside of the arrangement as a special touch. lunter@shaw.ca

Saying ‘no’ to a grumpy child

WOULDN’T it be nice if every time you asked your child to do something he responded cheerfully and immediately got to the task at hand?

Let’s face it; it would be great if everyone responded cheerfully to every request. But it’s not going to happen. And often it’s not our fault. You can’t vacuum the floor when you are already engaged in cleaning the bathroom. You can’t pick up and go for a walk when you’re bathing the baby. So you need to say no, but it’s how you say it that counts. We can work to be goodnatured and we can help our children to understand that grumpy responses to requests just aren’t necessary or

appreciated. Kids learn how to respond to life by watching us. So if we are complaining about what we need to do, they will follow suit. But if they see us respond cheerfully to them and to our spouse, even as we sometimes need to say no, they will at the very least

know what a good-natured response looks like. If you find that your child is often grumpy and it’s a problem, take a look at whatever else is happening. Maybe she’s just not a morning person and you realize that she’s fine the rest of the day but cranky when she first gets up. Acknowledge her reality and let her know that it’s OK to be unhappy in the morning, but the rest of the family shouldn’t have to suffer along with her. So, how can you accommodate her morning needs and still have a relatively peaceful time? It may be that it’s best to organize everything she needs for morning the night before so her morning time is simple. At the same time she can work to be civil to the

her own until she’s awake enough to be good company. Hungry kids can be grumpy. Kids who arrive home in a lousy mood may just need a nutritious snack before they can connect with anyone. If that describes your child, be prepared with food before you can expect any civilized conversation. There are still going to be times when your child is grumpy. This is most often the case when you are asking them to take on a task. “Alisha, could you please take out the garbage?” “Why do I always have to do everything?” she moans. Your first response can be to simply and calmly reiterate the request. “Alisha, could you please take our the garbage?” if she again starts to moan, hand her the garbage and say, “I don’t appreciate your tone of voice. Now please take out the garbage.” Then turn away. You will notice that you don’t engage in the argument she is trying to start. You don’t need to explain that she doesn’t have to do everything, that it’s her turn and that it’s not even a big job. Just deal with the grumpiness and move on. If she can’t get you involved in an argument, she will likely just take out the garbage. She may be mumbling as she goes but you can ignore that. If your normally cheerful child suddenly becomes a grump you will need to do some detective work. Something has changed that is bothering him and his response is to grumble. So have a conversation. You can say, “I notice that you’ve been in a lousy mood the last two days, do you want to talk about it?” Then wait and listen. He may not be ready to talk right away, but if you are patient you will hear what’s happening. It could be a problem with one of his friends, school or his soccer coach. Don’t expect that your child will be willing and cheerful all the time. Respect his feelings. So you can say, “I know you hate it when I ask you to set the table. But, you don’t have to like it; you just have to do it. Next week you can choose a different chore.”

FORGET the frying pan or the drugstore chocolate. Terms of Endearment. Very typical Mother’s day fare, but come on, it had to make this list. Make sure the Kleenex is handy for the story of an uptight widow and her fun-loving daughter who has a rocky marriage, an affair, and then a terminal illness. Steel Magnolias. Another tearjerker about friendship, love and motherhood. Julia Roberts stars early in her career as a diabetic daughter to Sally Field’s tough-as-she-has-to-be southern mom. Most of the action takes place in Truvy’s Beauty Parlor. Serial Mom. OK, maybe we’ll include one slasher flick — talk about taking motherhood seriously. Kathleen Turner stars in this 1994 satire about a mom who takes the health and well-being of her family to heart, with murderous results. This wickedly funny flick will have you laughing, and grateful that your own mom was never quite so intense.

A gift that goes global

Treat Mom on Mother’s Day

SOME moms are looking for a little extra thought to go into that gift.

World Vision offers an interesting idea. According to a recent press release, you can create a legacy in your mother’s name with the World Vision Gift Catalogue. Each gift provides a mother in a developing country, and her family, with an item that improves their living standards. Once you purchase the gift, World Vision will mail a greeting card to be personalized, outlining the gift bought for her and how it will benefit others. A Mother’s Day card can also be printed upon purchase of the Mother’s Day gift. One example? In many countries, young girls never have the chance to go to school but are forced to stay home to do chores and care for younger siblings. Others don’t have the money for school fees or uniforms. For $60 you can give a girl access to education, so she can finish school and realize her full potential. Visit www.worldvision.ca/ gifts.

A Mother’s Day Special

In 2012, Presentation House Theatre will produce an innovative theatrical event to tell the untold history of women - MY MOTHER’S STORY: NORTH VANCOUVER We want you to tell us your mother’s story from beginning to end - where and when she was born, what her parents were like, how she met your dad, where she moved, what she did. This is your chance to let the world know of her struggles, her achievements, her loves and losses. She does not need to have lived in North Vancouver but you do. We will be asking groups throughout North Vancouver to take the challenge to write and share their mothers’ stories. If you love the story you’ve written you can submit it to the North Shore News office at #100-126 E. 15th Street. Nine of the stories submitted will be chosen and crafted into a play which will play at Presentation House Theatre in

Celebrate mom with brunch

Deana Lancaster dlancaster@nsnews.com

THIS mom thing is so much harder than I thought it would be. Pre-children, I imagined it would be all peacefully sleeping babies, well-mannered tots (who I could take anywhere) and enthusiastic, goal-oriented teenagers. It will come as no surprise to you that I was gobsmacked by colic and spit-up; by defiant two-, three- and four-year-olds (when do the terrible twos end, anyway?); by the number of hours I have already logged on soggy soccer fields and cold ice arenas; and by the endless amusement that fart jokes provide for little boys. We aren’t even close to the teenage years yet. There are many upsides, of course, and one of them is the unqualified love and appreciation I have rediscovered for my own mom. I still can’t quite wrap my head around it, but she had three children under the age of three, she worked part-time as we were growing up and we each participated in no fewer than three extra-curricular activities each. These days, she never hesitates to help out with her grandchildren: babysitting, meals, pick-ups and drop-offs and more. I know! I lucked out in the

Or maybe I’ll take her out for brunch. Here are a few picks for fab brunch spots on the North Shore. Call now, all are selling out fast. Pinnacle at the Pier Hotel. I cruised in here last weekend with my boys and had one of the best bennies I’ve had in a long time: the eggs were so perfectly poached that with one tap of my fork the yolk ran like a lava flow, coating the crab cakes below. with a buffet that includes platters of seafood and sushi, omelette and carving stations, plus breakfast favourites like cinnamon french toast, blueberry pancakes, Okanagan apple crepes and those egg bennies. The Lobby at the Pinnacle at the Pier is at 138 Victory Ship Way, North Vancouver; 604-973-8000. Mother’s Day Brunch at Grouse Mountain. Give Mom some scenery to chew on with her brunch. The Observatory and Altitudes Bistro are offering several seatings between them, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. As well as all the usual suspects, the massive buffet includes corned beef

hash with swiss cheese, fresh seasonal seafood cakes with remoulade, resort-made free range chicken curry, carving and omelette stations. The cost, which includes the Skyride and activities on the mountain, is $45 for adults, $29 for youth and $19 for children. Fraiche and Beachside Forno. Neither of these West Van sister restaurants is offering a special brunch for mom . . . they don’t need to. Their regular weekend brunch — especially the Pain Perdu at Fraiche or the breakfast pizza at Beachside — will make her happy enough, if you can get a seat. At last check they were almost sold out. (Maybe you’d like to celebrate mom on Saturday?) Fraiche is at 2240 Chippendale Road, West Vancouver; 604-925-7595. Beachside Forno is at 1362 Marine Drive, West Vancouver; 604-926-3332. Cindy’s Café. This Marine Drive gem is known for generous portions of highrise bennies and fluffy waffles. Work it off afterward with a walk on the Seawall, 1850 Marine Drive, West Vancouver; 604-925-2880. The District Social. Go early and expect to wait. Repeated attempts to stop in for brunch have been faced with 30-45 minute waits. But I like the food and the eat local philosophy in this tiny Lower Lonsdale room, so perhaps mom will be willing to wait with you. Call it quality time. The District Social, 13 Lonsdale Ave., North Vancouver; 778-338-4938. The Tomahawk. If mom has a hearty appetite, you can’t go wrong at this North Van institution where Yukon-style bacon and eggs are the menu favourite. The Tomahawk Restaurant, 1550 Phillip Ave., North Vancouver; 604-9882612.

Here are some nice ideas that should make any Mum proud of what her offspring has created. The chicken and dessert can be prepared ahead of time so all you’ll have left to do is bake the chicken and make the pilaf. Serve some fresh buttered asparagus or green beans to round out the plate.

Chicken with Herbed Goat Cheese Bone-in chicken breasts may be a little harder to eat but they taste better than boneless and make it easier to insert the goat cheese. 6 chicken breast halves, bone-in, skin on 12 oz goat cheese with garlic and herbs Fresh basil leaves Good quality olive oil Kosher salt Freshly ground black pepper Place the chicken breasts on a baking sheet lined with foil. Gently loosen the skin from the meat with your fingers, leaving one side attached. Cut 12 thick slices of the goat cheese and place two slices plus one large basil leaf under the skin of each chicken breast. It can be prepared to this point and refrigerated until approximately 45 minutes before serving. Preheat over to 375 degrees. Rub each chicken breast with olive oil and sprinkle generously with salt and pepper. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes until just cooked through.

MOM will love dinner made by you with fresh ingredients.

Pecan Basmati Rice 1 Tbsp butter 3 tsp canola oil 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 carrot, peeled and finely diced 2 stalks of celery, diced 3 green onions, sliced thinly 1 cup chopped toasted pecans 2 cups basmati rice 4 tbsp chopped fresh parsley 1 tsp curry powder 3½ cups low-sodium chicken broth In a large saucepan over medium heat, sauté the garlic, carrot, celery, green onions and pecans in the butter and oil for two to three minutes. Add the parsley, rice and curry powder and cook, stirring, for an additional three minutes. Add the chicken broth and bring the mixture to a boil; immediately turn down heat to low setting and simmer

I’ve been making this dessert for 30 years and it never fails to impress; it’s similar to pavlova but denser in texture. You’ll need a heavy-duty stand mixer to achieve the desired result. 6 egg whites, room temperature ¼ tsp salt ½ tsp cream of tartar 1½ cups sugar 1 tsp vanilla extract ¼ cup light rum (optional) 1 cup heavy cream 1 quart fresh strawberries, sliced and sprinkled with 2 tbsp sugar (slice and add sugar about 1 hour before serving so berries release juice) Make this the evening of the day before serving. Lightly butter the bottom, not sides, of a nine-inch angel food pan. Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Place egg whites in large bowl of electric mixer; add salt and cream of tartar and beat until frothy. At high speed, beat in sugar two tablespoons at a time until stiff peaks form when beaters are slowly raised (this will take about 10 minutes). Turn into the prepared pan, spreading evenly. Place on the middle rack of oven. Immediately turn off heat and let pan stand in oven overnight. Loosen edges of torte with a spatula and turn out onto serving plate. Sprinkle surface with rum (if using). Refrigerate until well chilled – at least four hours. Just before serving, whip cream and cover the entire torte with it. Cut into wedges and serve with sliced fresh strawberries.

Info: www.dnv.org. ••• Jennifer Hewlett, owner of North Vancouver’s Fresh Air Life, won the 2011 Urban Poling Trailblazer Award. According to a press release, the award is presented to a certified Urban Poling nordic walking instructor who has made an outstanding contribution to the well-being of their communities by promoting healthy lifestyles

through urban poling. A 20-year veteran of the fitness business, Hewlett began teaching urban poling classes four years ago to share her love of walking and the beauty of the North Vancouver landscape, trails and mountains with her community. The Fresh Air Life motto says it all: “Powered by women, inspired by nature, driven by passion.” The company currently offers 10 classes each week — walkfit, hikefit and snowshoefit — which all use Urban Poling nordic walking poles to power participants along the trails, up the mountain and through urban neighbourhoods. Hewlett has also offered urban poling to elementary and high school students, mental health patients, kinesiology and nursing students at the University of British Columbia and people with Parkinson’s disease. Hewlett’s future plans include expanding her urban poling school program across the province, continuing to work with the mental health population and creating an urban poling program for plus size teens in her community. She’s also packing her poles and heading abroad in September to lead an urban poling program in Italy. For more information on Fresh Air Life, visit www.freshairlife.ca.

While Whistler gets most of the press, Squamish quietly goes about its business and gets it done. Perhaps it’s the vastly improved Sea to Sky highway, perhaps it’s the accolades they received from the 2010 Winter Olympic Games, but whatever the cause there is a new sense of confidence and community pride in Squamish that’s visible if you know where to look. Take, for instance, the Squamish Valley Golf Club. Like many long time Squamish establishments, there’s a sensible utility at work here. As well as the golf club, it’s home to the Howe Sound Curling Club and the Squamish Squash Club. It has a friendly, unpretentious atmosphere where members and visitors alike are treated to a warm welcome, even if you’re just dropping in to the restaurant for a meal. The Squamish Valley Golf Club is also a valuable community partner. Home to the annual Squamish Health Care Foundation’s Charity Golf Classic, the club has helped raise over $500,000 for local health care and supports the Howe Sound Women’s Shelter and the United Way as well as local schools and sports organizations. While the community participation is laudable, what makes Squamish worth a visit for those of us on the North Shore is the condition of the course. Since opening in 1964, Squamish has become one of the best conditioned public courses available See Easy page 36

Easy pace and views start the day right From page 35 to golfers. Combine that with breathtaking scenery, and you’ve got a day of golf that’s tough to top. We recently had the pleasure of playing Squamish and it was outstanding. I was joined on what was one of the nicest Saturdays to date in a cold, wet 2011 by friends Dan Rothenbush of Lady Jane Landscaping, Rob Stuart of Zoom Tee golf management software and Bob Overgaard, former principal of West Vancouver’s Sentinel secondary. Given that you don’t play golf to relax, you must relax in order to play golf, the drive to Squamish is a great way to begin. The easy pace and beautiful views ensure that you arrive unstressed and ready to play. Once we got there, while the others chose to warm up

TEE TIME

Distractions fit the landscape in Squamish From page 37

course was well-drained and dry. Greens here are always meticulously maintained and that day were in good early season form. In a few weeks they’ll be slick and lightning fast. One of the most challenging holes on the front nine is the 286-yard, Par-4 third. It’s a hard dogleg left and from the tee the green is hidden by a grove of trees. Out of sight in front of the green is a cavernous crescentshaped, sod-walled bunker. For those laying up — a good decision by the way — there are the remains of an old irrigation channel that has been grassed over. You really need to pick your landing spot. An accurate first shot: result, happiness. A careless ball off the tee will land you in a world of grief. My tee shot here was a little left. I was too close to the trees to go over, and couldn’t see the putting surface. Did I go for it? Of course I did. And that large bunker in front of the green that I mentioned? Lovely at this time of year, thank you. With the calamitous third behind us, we moved on to three of the course’s longer holes: the 440-yard, Par-4 fourth; the 199-yard, Par-3 fifth; and the 472-yard, Par-5 sixth. Here, in the geographic heart of the course, we paused a moment to soak in the glory of that spring

day. Snow on the nearby mountains dazzled and the sky was sapphire blue. In the quiet of the fairways, birdsong and wind rustling in new-sprouted leaves provided a sound track that was almost medicinal. A successful round of golf comes down to managing distractions: bunkers, water hazards and more. At Squamish the distractions have a natural feel to them, they fit the landscape. Take, for example, the Par-3 11th. At 189 yards from the back tees, it’s not the longest of the short holes, but there is a large pond running centre left all the way to the green. The trees and mountains reflect from its tranquil surface and it looks as if it had been there since the dawn of time. Yet it’s easy to shift your focus to where you don’t want your ball to go. From there, a damp ending awaits. Bunkers too can confound. I mentioned my adventure on No. 3. On the 12th hole, I took a lesson in concentration from Overgaard. His ball landed in the first of two bunkers that guard the right side of the green. With a calmness born from years of managing teenagers, his next shot was up, over the second bunker and on to the green. That, as they say, is how you do that. I think my favourite stretch of the course is the 15th and 16th holes. If you haven’t played Squamish in a few

great view of the Stawamus Chief and the rugged peaks to the east. It’s not a long hole by any means, but the water . . . oh, the water. I watched as, one by one, my companions dutifully put their tee

shots in the drink. Overgaard liked it so much he did it twice. We were all having such a great time that it really didn’t matter.

Fourth annual 2011 North Shore Mayors’ Golf Tournament: On Friday, May 27, Seymour Golf and Country Club will once again host the 4th annual North Shore Mayors’ Golf Tournament. Since its inception in 2008, the tournament has raised over $300,000 to benefit North Shore community organizations. This year’s designated causes are a pair of bus services for seniors: the Go Bus in North Vancouver and West Vancouver’s Senior’s Shuttle. They will share $50,000 with the hope that the funds will inspire funds from other sources as well. This year’s tourney hopes to raise over $100,000, the balance of which will be shared by the North Shore Community Foundation and the West Vancouver Foundation. That is part of the charm of the Squamish Valley Golf Club. Even if you’re having a less than stellar round, it’s difficult not to have a good time. From the staff in the club house to the condition of the course and the majestic surroundings, it’s one of the most enjoyable outings you can find in the

Lower Mainland. It’s no surprise that the course is attracting a growing number of tournaments. On May 17-18, the CN Canadian Women’s Golf tour will be there, with Canada’s top female golfers competing for $60 thousand in prizes. On June 18-19, it’s the Squamish Men’s Amateur tournament which many use as

a tune up for the BCGA Men’s Amateur, and from August 8-11 it’s the BCGA Senior Provincial Championship. A few years back, I played Squamish shortly after the women’s tour had been through and it was in incredible shape. With the tournaments they’ve lined up for 2011, it will be like that all year. It really is worth the drive.

CARSON GRAHAM RUGBY TEAM ENJOYING STELLAR SEASON

Jeremy Shepherd Contributing Writer

Eagles soar

PERENNIAL rugby powerhouse Carson Graham has spent the last two months digging their cleats into muddy Lower Mainland fields and grappling for the province’s No. 1 ranking. The 6-0 Eagles are currently the second-ranked AAA rugby team in B.C. behind the Shawnigan Lake School Stags, but for coach Tom Larisch, it’s business as usual. “We’ve been top five in the province for 21 years,” he said. “It’s kind of a culture at this school.” Carson Graham, the winner of provincial titles in 2006 and 2008, thumped their first four opponents of the season, not letting anyone get within 40 points. They opened their schedule by toppling Vancouver College 72-21 on their home field.

Part of the reason his school has such consistent success may be because Carson Graham produces great athletes as opposed to great rugby players, said Larisch. “Our model is multi-sport,” he said. The coach said most sports utilize skills that cross over effectively on a rugby field, whether it’s the core strength of a wrestler, the hand-eye coordination and agility of a basketball player or the tackling ability of a football player. Larisch said the multi-sport approach may be why the decent Carson Graham junior and bantam rugby teams always seem to transform into the dominant senior team. However, what makes victories like the Eagles’ 93-7 drubbing of Handsworth secondary even more impressive is that the majority of the team is in Grade 11. Larisch cautioned that some of the lopsided scores may be deceptive as some of their opponents haven’t been as strong as in previous years. See Team page 41

High flying Eagles keep their focus From page 40

In a more competitive contest, Carson Graham edged St. Michael’s University 24-10. The squad returned to their dominating ways in their next game, shellacking West Vancouver 52-5. Despite incredible defence that yielded two shutouts in three games, the Eagles looked more vulnerable in the Sevens Tournament, although Larisch said that may be misleading. “We don’t really focus on Sevens,” he said, adding Carson Graham didn’t field their strongest roster for the tournament. Regular season rugby is 15 on 15, as opposed to seven on seven in the tournament. Still, the Eagles’ first three wins got them into the bronze medal game where they were bested by the Oak Bay Barbarians 24-5. Shawnigan Lake took the gold. “Shawnigan is in a league of their own,” Larisch said, adding that the rugby dynasty tends to draw top talent from across the country. Most teams tend to learn more from defeats than victories, but Larisch said stagnation won’t be a problem for Carson Graham’s squad. “Our whole focus is to get better every practice and do something better every game,” he said. The team practices at least once a day, according to Larisch. Asked if he wanted to single out any great players on the team, Larisch declined, but not because of any lack of outstanding players. “We’re completely team-oriented,” he said. Larisch said if they win a championship, it would be because of that team focus.

PILKINGTON, Boris 06.09.24 - 28.04.2011 Passed over reluctantly but peacefully at home, surrounded by his beloved books, in this little house he loved, into that greatest garden of all, in his 87 years. Born in Brighton, U.K. and raised between there and Vancouver Island, having crossed the Atlantic Ocean 5 times by freighter with his family before he was 12. When his parents separated, he accompanied his mother and sister back to the U.K. in 1936. Conscripted into the British Army’s Royal Ordinance Corp and served in Germany where he became proficient as a demolition’s expert, defusing unexploded bombs! After finishing his military service, he and his mother followed his sister back to Canada and into West Vancouver. They settled in Dundarave where his first job as a landscape gardener continued on for the next 60 years. He later boasted that in all those years he never needed a Doctor’s service. Suffering a Heart Attack at 80 years his health deteriorated over the last 5 years. We wish to Thank North Shore Health, Dr. Sugar and the Homecare Program and Staff for all their dedication, love and attention. Boris was never enrolled in school nor given any educational instruction at home. He taught himself to read and write becoming an avid reader with special interest in Architecture, Ornithology, Geology, Paleontology and of course his beloved English Murder mysteries. While growing up on the English Chanel he started collecting sea shells, then fossils, then minerals, building an impressive museum quality collection. Predeceased by his parents. His father George Pilkington had been a Concert Pianist (a fine exponent of Chopin), who made many recordings while in England. He was also an actor on the London stage. In Canada he worked as a piano teacher in Victoria, B.C. His mother Edith May (Stevenson) was an accomplished violinist who performed in the U.K., Northern Europe and as an Entertainer providing Dinner and Lounge music on the U.K. Australia Ocean Liners. He leaves to mourn his only sister Marie Olsen. His longtime companion Doris Coombs and his live in care givers, James Mead and Caesar Gonzalez. No Service by request. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Nature Charity of your choice are requested.
