Wedding fever? Not in the Royal City Despite its name and an abundance of wedding stores, the city seems to be sitting this one out BY ANDREW FLEMING REPORTER afleming@royalcityrecord.com
Residents of New Westminster, a city named by the great-great grandmother of an heir to the throne, and also one with a disproportionate number of wedding stores, don’t seem to be buying en masse into the hype surrounding Friday’s royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton.
For local royal watchers who didn’t receive an invitation to Westminster Abbey for the big day, but who still wanted to celebrate the ceremony with a crowd, there doesn’t seem to be much to choose from. “I’m not aware of the city doing anything in any official capacity for the royal wedding,” said the city’s communications manager, Blair Fryer, on Easter Monday. “There is nothing that has crossed my desk about it, so I think it is safe to say that, no, there is nothing special being planned.” The wedding is expected to be among the most televised in history, with some estimates as high as two billion viewers, more than a quarter of the world’s population. However, a recent poll showed that seven out of 10 Canadians feel indifferent

about the pending nuptials, and any B.C. residents who wanted to watch the event live would also have to be prepared to pull an all-nighter because the broadcast begins in the wee hours of April 29 due to the time difference. “We’ve gotten quite a few calls about it but, frankly, the logistics of trying to stay open at 3 a.m. is prohibitive, to say the least,” said Fred Bilawey, owner of the Dublin Castle Neighbourhood Grill and the closest thing New West has to an English castle. “It’s a big day for a lot of people, but we decided it’s just not worth it. I guess that’s why they invented PVR.” Although Fairmont hotels in both Vancouver and Victoria are hosting live events, no businesses in British Columbia’s

original capital city seem to be planning anything out of the ordinary. A representative of Tourism New Westminster said she was unaware of any special plans, and the River Market, Inn at The Quay and the Westminster Club all confirmed they had no intention of staying open all night. Sherlock’s British Sweets, Groceries, Soccer & Tea Room on Columbia Street might seem an elementary choice to catch a rebroadcast of the ceremony, but staff said they weren’t aware of any special plans when The Record stopped in earlier this week. A Q & A WITH THE CANDIDATES IN NEW WESTMINSTER-COQUITLAM
Meet the people who want your vote Diana Dilworth, Conservative
Briefly introduce yourself: A proud resident of Port Moody since 1991, I have worked, volunteered and raised my family in this riding. My background includes working for both the private and public sector, including the City of New Westminster. Operating my own small business, I served clients in all three municipalities in this riding. Currently, I am serving in elected office and have worked as operations manager at a non-profit organization for the past nine years. This diverse background provides the breadth of experience and skill required to be a strong member of Parliament. What political experience do you have? For the past 20 years, I have worked and volunteered in the riding. As a volunteer I chaired and participated in numerous boards, including two years as the chair of the district parent advisory council in Coquitlam, representing and advocating for the parents of over 30,000 school students. First elected in 1999 to Port Moody city council, I have a strong reputation of leadership, facilitating community engagement and representation of residents and have a proven track record in championing projects and initiatives to improve the community. What issue will you prioritize if elected? During the campaign, my focus has been on the economy, and that will continue if elected. I believe that building on our economic recovery with strong growth and job creation is the most important thing for a government to focus on. Key to this is providing a stable, low-tax environment with prudent government spending, something the Conservative government of Prime Minister Stephen Harper has done. We now pay less tax then they did 40 years ago, which means more money in the pockets of hard-working Canadians. What is your party’s track record on dealing with that issue? The Conservative party’s track record on the economy has been responsible and stable. We have managed to provide targeted tax relief with prudent spending, including the widely praised Economic Action Plan, and the result has been extremely positive. We have seen jobs created, taxes lowered without sacrificing important government services and a return to economic growth. I am very
proud of our party’s record on this issue, as it is important to our community.
ue to do so, one practical step at a time. We will continue to introduce and support policies that help make life more affordable for the average Canadian.
If you could be any superhero, which one would you be? If I were a superhero, I would be Low Tax Woman, fighting to help Canadian families and the economy by cutting high taxes. This reflects my belief that the most important thing we as a government can do is provide tax relief to hard-working Canadian families so they can keep more of their hard-earned money in their pockets, and this is something I intend to fight for.
If you could be any superhero, which one would you be? Aquaman, of course.
Ken Lee, Liberal candidate
Briefly introduce yourself: I am an environmental engineer and an owner/manager of number of small businesses. I have worked with the UN as an environmental engineer. Since 2002, I have assessed many greenhouse gas emission reduction projects in over 20 countries for the United Nations. I live in New Westminster with my wife. I have three adult children and one grandchild.
Fin Donnelly, NDP candidate
Briefly introduce yourself: My name is Fin Donnelly, and I’m running for the NDP. I was born in New Westminster, raised in Port Moody and live and work in Coquitlam. I know this riding and have committed my life through my work with Rivershed Society of B.C. and as a city councillor for seven years to making this area as healthy and sustainable as possible. For the past 17 months, I have worked hard as your MP and taken those values to Ottawa – standing up for important issues like job protection, the environment, health care and transportation.
What political experience do you have? None whatsoever, and I am very proud of it. What issue will you prioritize if elected? My priority will be to support our families with: early childhood education, post graduation studies, home care support and secure retirement options, rather than buying U.S.-made fighter jets, providing tax cuts to big corporations owned by U.S., and building U.S.-style mega prisons. I will work towards improving the lifestyle of all of our constituents.
What political experience do you have? I have been the member of Parliament for New Westminster-Coquitlam-Port Moody for the past 17 months. Prior to that, I was a Coquitlam city councillor for seven years. This is my fifth campaign and eighth year as an elected official.
What is your party’s track record on dealing with that issue? Liberal Party of Canada has always promoted social justice and equal opportunities. It is our multicultural people who can speak a variety of languages and understand various cultures that make Canada great. Well-educated, multilingual and multicultural work force will be the key to our country’s success and prosperity in the global era.
What issue will you prioritize if elected? Affordability. Not only are working families feeling the pinch because of the rising costs of food, energy, gas and other everyday items, they now have the HST on top of everything else. Families are finding it harder and harder to afford post-secondary education, purchase a home or tackle rising medical costs. New Democrats have put forward clear and practical solutions to scrap the HST, improve health care, secure a national affordable housing plan and cut pharmaceutical drug costs.
If you could be any superhero, which one would you be? Guardian of Humor, whose purpose is to expose lame funnies of professionals. When these professionals overstep their comedic bounds with bizarre questions, I step in. (Rebecca Helps, from the Green Party, did not meet the submission deadline.)
What’s your party’s track record on dealing with that issue? The NDP has always put families first and will contin-
Forseth joins Harper on Easter Sunday visit
BY THERESA MCMANUS REPORTER tmcmanus@royalcityrecord.com
Burnaby-New Westminster Conservative candidate Paul Forseth joined Stephen Harper at an Easter Sunday church service in Burnaby. Harper brought Easter greetings and a message of fiscal management to Burnaby Alliance Church, a Chinese evangelical church. Rev. Tim Tze asked God to erect a “wall
of protection” around the Conservative leader to guard him from “evil.” Forseth, a former member of Parliament, is hoping to win the Burnaby-New Westminster riding away from NDP candidate Peter Julian. Julian has won the past two elections. Media covering Harper’s visit to the Lower Mainland on Easter
Sunday met at Royal Square Mall, where they boarded a bus to the Burnaby church. Some sites on the Internet promoted a Stephen Harper Unwelcoming Rally at Royal Square Mall. About a half dozen people went to the mall, where they found a bus waiting to take media representatives to the Burnaby church – but no sign of Harper.
Only in New West
New Westminster Secondary School has the distinction of holding the only all-candidates meeting in the Royal City during the 2011 federal election campaign. Last week, NEXT New Westminster and New Westminster Environmental Partners teamed up to host a meet-and-greet with candidates from the New Westminster-
Coquitlam and Burnaby-New Westminster ridings at a local restaurant. While candidates were given a couple of minutes to address the crowd, and candidates and residents alike enjoyed the format, it was a casual gathering and not an official all-candidates forum. On Thursday, NWSS students will hear from candidates in both ridings. As of The Record’s ◗Election Page 8

weren’t particularly excited about the wedding. “I couldn’t care less,” said Lainey Thompsonwhilebeingservedhightea with her friend Lindsay MacDonald and granddaughter Khali. “I think the last one was such a big deal because of Diana and everybody was in love with her. It was such a fairy tale wedding because we all thought she was madly in love with him. When that fell apart, I think it made it harder for the next generation. The fact that I’m even aware of it is only
because it is always on the TV and it’s her son getting married.” MacDonald shared the sentiment. “One thing I’ve noticed is a lot of people my age look at royalty as a nice thing to have, but they’re not exactly present in our everyday lives,” she said. “I know growing up it was much more important to my family, who are British, but it’s just not current for our generation anymore.” However, Molly Tan and her daughter-in-law Marlene Potter, who were in the store stocking up for a
trip to Kamloops to watch it with relatives, said they were both looking forward to it. “I’ll be staying up late,” said Tan, who is originally from England but has no discernible trace of an accent after living in Canada for over half a century. “I can’t miss it. I just hope he becomes king. I hope (the Queen) forgets about her son.” Their husbands, however, both said they’d prefer to be watching hockey. “Women are much more interested than men are,” Potter pointed out.

Dodgers don’t deserve support from voters
Every election we seem to face the We call this the Sarah Palin manoeuvre. Although the truth is Palin hardly same challenges – and this one is no different. There’s always at least one invented the tactic, she just showed potential candidates that not only can you candidate who has figured out, or whose handlers have figured out, that it would avoid mainstream media and open quesbe better to avoid unscripted tion forums, you can make it public meetings. seem like a principled stand. The reasoning is obvious. In our opinion, if you want THE RECORD If the candidate, usually one to run for political office, you must be available and open who has little or no experience in politics, isn’t caught in public saying to questions from the public and media in real time. And by real time, we mean something just plain dumb or revealing his or her lack of political knowledge, not by email. And not screened through assistants or handlers. If you can’t answer there is much less chance of losing votes.
OUR VIEW
a question, or at least make an attempt, you are very likely unsuited for representing your constituents, whatever your party. Voters can accept someone who is not a brilliant public speaker, or someone who can’t rattle off economic statistics, but they should not support someone who is simply ducking questions in hopes of riding their party’s coattails into office. Yes, candidates who do duck questions get into office. And we can, without naming names, assure readers that those
candidates who do end up in office are resoundingly poor representatives – for both their party and their constituents. A short campaign makes it easier for candidates to avoid scrutiny, but even in compressed campaigns it is obvious who has spent time mastering the art of evasion as opposed to facing the tough questions in public. The only way to change this kind of behaviour is to send a strong message to all candidates that if they can’t engage in public discourse, they don’t deserve anyone’s vote.
Get ready for some election drama IN THE HOUSE KEITH BALDREY
P
rovincial politics usually trump the federal kind when it comes to holding the interest of most British Columbians, but I suspect the upcoming federal election is going to prove to be more fascinating than recent ones. This province has 36 ridings, and the electoral result in most of them is known about a minute after the polls close. The Conservatives should win 14 ridings quite easily, while the NDP appears to have a lock on eight seats. In some of the ridings, the Conservatives win by such massive numbers one gets the impression the party could run house pets as candidates and still win (the same holds true with the NDP stronghold of Vancouver East). Many federal Conservative MPs who win by huge margins lack any kind of public profile. (When was the last time you heard about Mark Warawa in Langley, Ed Fast in Abbotsford, Ron Cannan in Kelowna or Colin Mayes in the Okanagan, for example?) To be fair, the lot of a government backbencher is an anonymous one, but the fact is the MPs I just
named win three or even four times the votes of their nearest opponent. So these ridings lack any kind of drama on election night. But there are more than a dozen or so ridings where things may get very interesting as the night progresses, and a number of them are likely to change hands when it’s all over. If the current polls are correct – they suggest the federal Liberal vote is collapsing – then the seats to keep the closest eye on are the five currently held by that party. That includes the three seats in Vancouver, one in Surrey and the Vancouver Island seat of Esquimalt-Juan de Fuca. The Conservatives, having run second in all of those seats in 2008, are the logical favourites to reap the benefits of even a small collapse in Liberal votes in those ridings. The one exception may be the riding of Vancouver Centre, where longtime Liberal MP Hedy Fry has been counted out before but always seems to emerge victorious. Other seats with uncertain outcomes include Surrey North, where the NDP has targeted the near-invisible Conservative MP Dona Cadman for defeat; Newton-North Delta, where the Liberals will be hard-pressed to hold the seat; and Saanich-Gulf Islands, where federal Green leader Elizabeth May is trying to win a seat. May is facing longtime Conservative MP Gary Lunn, who has a formidable
Social justice is key for Canada
Dear Editor:
Green voters who recognize Stephen Harper’s threat to our democracy and planet, who plan to avoid splitting the vote, might consider social justice – the foundation of a sustainable society. Our social infrastructure programs – medicare, employment insurance, pensions, welfare – were initiated by the Cooperative Commonwealth Federation, later the NDP, and actualized over the decades by honourable politicians of all parties who represent the public will and intelligence. These institutions eased the impact of global recession; we are less at the mercy of market forces. Harper’s Conservatives are replacing all this terrible socialism with corporate and U.S. rule – growing our debt with more riot squads, prisons, soldiers, and stealth fighters – destroying the best ◗Election Page 7 supports capitalism has. Liberals, less extreme, are on the same path. In fact, we have a mixed economy
and society, which works well under stress – but less and less so under the onslaught of this contemptuous man and his allies. New Democrats, cooperating with citizen organizations – yes, those assertive unions too – support social justice issues here and around the world, often leading in peace and environmental activism. This election is not about left, right or ahead; must not be about ego and power. It’s about a civil, sustainable society, a future for our children – now or never. H. Bechler, New Westminster

Now that we’ve endured weeks of nauseating political propaganda from the editors of the NDP Gazette (a.k.a. The Royal City Record), its finally time to look at the facts before we go to the polls. ◗Conservatives Page 7

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Conservatives are qualified ◗ continued from page 6
First, the economy. The loonie is over $1.04 US and heading higher, showing that the world’s investors believe strongly in Canada’s economy. Inflation is low and forecast to remain that way for some time. The unemployment rate has dropped to below eight per cent and is forecast to go lower. The deficit is down dramatically, in spite of $14 billion in stimulus spending to counteract the global recession. The economy has performed well in the face of extremely difficult global trends, and the Conservatives should be given credit for the good job they have done. Second fact: The only way to change the status quo in New Westminster is to vote Conservative. The Liberals do not stand a chance, obviously. If re-elected, our ineffectual NDP benchwarmers will simply languish in opposition again, crow about their pet topics (i.e. business bad, unions good), collect their pay cheques and change nothing. Electing Conservatives, on the other hand, would create a massive, positive change for New Westminster, as we would have talented, experienced representatives speaking for us at the governing table. The change would be huge. Fact three, our Conservative candidates are incredibly qualified. Paul Forseth is a three-term MP with deep knowledge of Ottawa. Diana Dilworth is a three-term Port Moody councillor who knows our local issues intimately. David H. Brett, New Westminster
Keep Hume Park open Dear Editor:
I am writing in response to the New Westminster school board reopening the
Hume Park School closure process. Mr. Atkinson has opened this debate again, after the families in Sapperton just received notices saying that Hume Park was going to be open for business. There have been many statistics thrown about in this debate. Most regarding the declining enrolment at this school. As a parent who has been affected by this ongoing debate I have serious concerns about the ramifications of the upcoming decisions. Has anyone else in the city passed by any of the other elementary schools? Have you noticed what has been or is under construction? In my day they were called portables, but the new politically correct name is modular classrooms. My count is two at John Robson and three at Herbert Spencer. Perhaps I should have driven by the others in the school district to get a full count, but five classrooms at two schools seems outrageous when they are talking about closing a school that has been part of the New Westminster education system for many, many years. Why is the school board considering closing a school while building portables? Next year is the first year of full-day kindergarten in the city of New Westminster. Why are they still trying to close a school that will be used if it is kept open? I find the statistics thrown about to be exactly that: numbers manipulated to serve a purpose. My daughter was one of only two children registered for kindergarten last year. This is not due to a lack of students in the area, only parents wanting a secure, stable, funded school for their children. My daughter was not allowed to attend Hume Park. I am asking the school board to look to the future and keep this important institution open.
election machine in his riding. There is a misconception that the Gulf Islands is Green-friendly territory, based on the assumption there must be a bunch of tie-dyed tree-huggers living there. There are a few, but there a lot more retired doctors, lawyers and dentists there who ensure the Conservatives win every poll on the islands in every election, so it will by a major upset if May wins. One of the more intriguing scenarios involves some apparently safe Conservative-held ridings in the Interior and on Vancouver Island. There are a couple of potential factors that may turn those races on their heads. First of all, if there
is indeed a surge in NDP popularity, that factor – combined with lingering anti-government sentiment that lies barely below the surface in those regions – could make these races competitive. Second, a significant collapse in the Liberal vote would hurt the Conservatives in particular, as Liberal voters would shift to the NDP. The riding of KootenayColumbia, for example, should be a Conservative stronghold. But longtime incumbent Jim Abbott has retired, and that area has long held an anti-government sentiment (the Reform party used to own this territory). This has the NDP talking about an upset victory there.

There are also several ridings where the combined Liberal/NDP vote in 2008 was significantly higher than the Conservative vote, so if enough strategic voting occurs, some of those ridings may be going the NDP’s way. So how’s it all going to come out? The Conservatives should win 20 to 27 seats, while the NDP should win from nine to 17 seats, and the Liberals will be lucky to hang on to four of the five they now hold. Yes, B.C. politics is usually more interesting than the federal variety, but for one night at least the federal scene should keep our interest longer than usual. Election: Drawing attention to homelessness ◗ continued from page 3
press time, the following BurnabyNew Westminster candidates had confirmed their attendance to the student organizer: Garth Evans (Liberal); Paul Forseth (Conservative); Peter Julian (NDP); and Carrie McLaren (Green). Of the New WestminsterCoquitlam candidates, only Fin Donnelly (NDP) had confirmed his attendance at the event.
Homelessness an issue
NDPer Fin Donnelly was the only candidate in the New Westminster-Coquitlam riding to respond to a two-question questionnaire posed by the Tri-Cities Homelessness Task Force. The group, which is an alliance of non-profit and government agencies, community groups, politicians and citizens, felt the topic of homelessness and affordable housing needed to be included in the 2011 election campaign and questioned candidates on the housing/homelessness issue. Donnelly noted that he has participated in the region’s homeless count, which provides critical infor-
mation on the region’s homelessness. He said Canada needs an “overarching, comprehensive strategy” to tackle homelessness. “I have spoken out in the House of Commons regarding the need for a national housing strategy that brings together federal, provincial, territorial, municipal and aboriginal partners to establishing a national housing strategy,” Donnelly wrote. “As MP, I will continue to work cooperatively with all levels of government to increase access to short-term, transitional and affordable housing in Coquitlam and Port Moody.” Although Donnelly was the only New Westminster-Coquitlam candidate to respond to the questionnaire, the Conservative, Liberal and NDP candidates in Port MoodyWestwood-Port Coquitlam provided responses. Burger poll continues
New Westminster-Coquitlam Conservative candidate Diana
Dilworth helped her party retain its lead when she stopped for a bite to eat at Burger Heaven on Monday. The Harper Burger continues to hold the lead in Burger Heaven’s bun-official burger poll, but the Layton Burger appears to be closing the gap. Leading since the poll got underway, the Harper Burger has 366 votes, followed by the Layton Burger at 342. Trailing are the Ignatieff Burger at 146, the May Burger at 68 and the Duceppe Burger at 29. Undecided voters account for 187 burgers in the poll. In the past week, the Layton Burger garnered 99 points to the Harper Burger’s 78 points. Undecided votes also saw an 83-vote surge in the past week. “It was a really busy weekend,” said server Kendra Stogrin, who has yet to see any entourages coming in to support specific parties. “Maybe they are coming in and not letting me know who they are.” –with Vancouver Sun files

City woman faces jail for hiding evidence A New Westminster woman may be facing jail time following a court finding that she hid evidence of her son’s motor vehicle accident that is suspected in a 2006 hit-and-run. A sentencing hearing was held April 21 in B.C. Supreme Court in New Westminster for Allyne Fitzgerald, who was found guilty in September of obstruction of justice in connection with the crash that killed 21year-old Robert Staines. Justice James Williams is scheduled to deliver his sentencing decision May 24. Staines was walking in the 800-block of Brunette Avenue early on Feb. 26, 2006 when he was hit. His body remained on the vehicle as it drove for more than a kilometre and fell off in the 200-block Begin Street in Coquitlam, where it was found by a passerby around 7:15 a.m. Charges against James High, Fitzgerald’s adult son, were stayed in 2008. Williams said in his reasons for judgment that although the charges against High were dropped, there is “at least a high degree of likelihood” that High’s vehicle was involved in the hit-and-run. Williams found that Fitzgerald arranged and paid for the repair of her son’s damaged SUV and tried to discourage two women from talking to police. Crown prosecutor Louise Kenworthy asked Williams to give Fitzgerald an 18month jail sentence. Defence lawyer Joe Doyle said a jail sentence would be too harsh for a 66-yearold who had never been involved with the law before and has virtually no chance of
reoffending. A psychological report showed that Fitzgerald is severely depressed and has suffered from being in the public eye. “The impact of this on her to this date has been substantial,” Doyle said. He suggested a suspended sentence. If Williams determines that jail is required, Doyle said a conditional sentence served in the community would be appropriate. Staines’ mother Joceyln read a victim impact statement in court for Williams to consider when deciding on a sentence. “It has taken us close to five years to arrive at this guilty verdict and during this time our emotions have ranged from disbelief, acceptance, horror, anger and exhaustion,” she said. “The victim-impact brochure states to say how our life has changed since Rob’s death. I can’t think of a way that our life hasn’t changed, and nothing for the better. I am jealous of all families that are complete and miss Rob always. I think of Rob many times a day, every day.” Jocelyn went on: “My children are precious to me and this has been the most horrendous way to learn that lesson. Mothers love their children with all their hearts but there is an obligation to teach them right from wrong by example.” Although Fitzgerald maintains her innocence, Doyle said she has always expressed remorse for the Staines family. When given a chance to speak at the hearing, Fitzgerald said: “I can say that I’m truly sorry for their loss.” – By Jennifer Saltman, Province reporter

In My Back Yard fair offers info for seniors BY THERESA MCMANUS REPORTER tmcmanus@royalcityrecord.com
Local seniors will get a chance to connect to local services at the annual In My Back Yard Fair. Seniors will be able to talk to more than 35 not-for-profit exhibitors about health, housing, safety and other services for older adults at the free event that’s taking place on Saturday, April 30 from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Royal City Centre. Exhibitors include the Alzheimer Society, Fraser Health, Service Canada and TransLink. “It’s a one-stop shop to connect with not-for-profits,” said gerontologist Mariam Larson. “You also get to connect with other seniors.” Larson said the IMBY Fair is meant to be both informative and entertaining. The New Westminster Secondary School jazz quintet Sockdollager will perform in the mall’s centre court at noon. Two presentations will take place in the
mall’s community room, including one by the Seniors Services Society on housing options for older adults (10:15 a.m.). Chuck Puchmayr will share his story, Living on Gifted Time, at 11:15 a.m., a presentation about organ donation. “People were very interested in hearing about it,” Larson said about his presentation at a previous IMBY fair. “People assume if you are older, you have nothing to offer. That’s not the case.” More than 200 seniors attended the 2010 In My Back Yard Fair: Connecting Seniors to Services. Each participant receives a free bag from Fraser Health Lifeline in which they can collect all the free information they pick up at the fair. The IMBY Fair is organized by members of the Seniors Planning and Action Network of New Westminster, a group of seniors and community organizations working together to address the needs of an aging population. Funding is provided by United Way of the Lower Mainland.

Sounds of the future: Alex Mah, in foreground, and New Westminster’s Remy Siu are music composition students at Simon Fraser University who took part in the Phoenix Chamber Choir’s Young Composers Development Program. Mah, who recently had a chance to work on sound for a film project, agrees. “I think I’d like to do collaborative work,” he says, noting that he’d love to find himself writing music for dance and theatre. “I think it would a lot more fun to pursue a career composing things with other people.” Siu is eyeing the possibility of graduate studies in composition and agrees that he, too, would like to collaborate with other artists. “Working with dancers is a really good experience,” he says. In fact, Siu has work in the SFU dance students’ grad show, being held May 4 to 7. Both also had work in a recent electro-
acoustic show at SFU Woodward’s and in the IGNITE! Youth Festival at the Cultch. Siu notes that one of the most important things for composers is to listen to as much music as possible, so both he and Mah spend as much of their spare time as possible taking in concerts – the Music on Main series is one of their favourites, and they also have an all-access pass for the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. “The more live music you listen to, the better a composer you’ll be,” he says. For more on music composition studies at SFU, check out www.sfu.ca and look for the links under School for the Contemporary Arts. Regular eye exams crucial
P
eople usually have plenty to say about what you inherited from your parents, whether it’s your father’s eyes or mother’s smile. But for Sharon Peters, it was her father’s glaucoma. Aware that glaucoma runs in families, Sharon knew to be diligent about getting regular eye exams to check for signs of the sightstealing disease. But sadly, many more Canadians are in the dark about this important link. “Knowing my family history made me aware of the importance of being proactive about my own eye health,”says Peters. “Have that conversation with your parents and have regular eye exams.” Family history, particularly having a parent with the disease, is considered one of the primary risk factors for glaucoma.
Unfortunately, few Canadians are as informed about this risk as they need to be. A recent Canadian Institute for the Blind (CNIB) survey found that only a third of Canadians have spoken to their immediate families about whether glaucoma runs in their family. But among that group, almost half (47 per cent) learned that it did, and that they also could be at an elevated risk.
All the more reason for regular eye examinations, says Dr. Keith Gordon, vicepresident of research and service quality at CNIB. “Because glaucoma usually progresses slowly and painlessly, it’s possible to have it without knowing,” he says.“Regular eye exams are the only way to detect the disease early, before it begins to impair your sight.” - News Canada

There’s no such thing as being too old to belly dance. Thanks to Dance With Me Studio in New Westminster, anyone aged 55 and up can experience the art of belly dancing through registering with the New Westminster School District’s continuing education program. The classes are set to take place from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Fridays starting on April 29. The cost of the lessons is $40. Head belly dance instructor Melody Jones will instruct the classes, provided that a solid number of people sign up. Jones said that participants with health concerns should approach her prior to class, but there are really no limitations for those wishing to partake. “If you’re mobile, why not?” she said. Jones stressed that chairs are used regularly in class to provide support and that belly dancers are not required to expose their bellies. Participants can wear whatever they feel comfortable in. Classes are intended to strengthen and improve flexibility through warm-ups, movements and rhythms that will be instructed. Anyone wishing to register for seniors’ belly dance can visit www.ce40.com or call 604-517-6345. For more information about Dance With Me Studio, visit their website at www.dancewithmenewwest.com. Seniors’ belly dancing is currently offered in Surrey as well and will also be taught in Langley this spring.

Tim’s story... T
im Delesalle recently reaped a huge return on his family’s investment in RCH – his life was saved. Tim and his family played a significant role in the construction of The Delesalle Chapel, a sanctuary within the hospital built to help fulfill the spiritual needs of all patients and staff. It was there, during his recovery, that Tim would come to contemplate the miracle of his life on a daily basis. Tim, a healthy, active 57 years, had an unexpected acute heart attack in May 2010. He had just returned from a run, when he collapsed at home. “The angels all lined up for me perfectly that day. From my family, to the paramedics, to Dr. Jean-Francois Dorval and the staff at RCH,” says Tim. His wife Karen and her two daughters were at home at the time of the heart attack and they immediately administered CPR. Within minutes the paramedics were on their way. Karen remembers the scene at home: “The paramedics were very calm, but everything felt as though it was happening in slow motion. So many things were going through my mind. I kept thinking, why don’t

Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation to raise $2.8 million for cardiac and stroke patients they hurry up?” With the advanced communication technology available in many ambulances, an electrocardiogram was done at the scene and the results immediately transmitted to RCH. This advance notice alerted the catheterization lab to prepare for an emergency cardiac angioplasty, while Tim was being transported in. Despite his rapid transfer to RCH, Tim was in full cardiogenic shock upon arrival, his heart unable to supply enough blood to his organs. As Karen followed the ambulance to hospital, her own heart beating wildly in her chest, her only thought was, “How will I know where he is when I get to hospital? How will I find him?” On arrival at RCH, to Karen’s
great relief, she was met by a staff member who knew exactly who Tim was and what his diagnosis was. The family was taken to a private room and kept informed of Tim’s progress and condition. While the family was anxiously waiting, the catheterization lab team, led by Dr. Dorval, first stabilized the heart with an intra-aortic balloon pump and then performed an angiogram, through which they found that one of the coronary arteries was completely blocked. Dr. Dorval was able to quickly open the artery with a balloon and stents (angioplasty), restoring blood flow to the heart muscle. With the blood flow restored and the heart function stabilized, continued on page 4

t comes as no surprise to us that the emergency department physicians and nurses at Royal Columbian Hospital (RCH) recently decided to enlist the adjacent Tim Hortons space. In spite of the expertise and resourcefulness of RCH doctors, nurses and Fraser Health administrators, the service demands on this facility have exceeded capacity for years. More than a year has passed since Fraser Health delivered to the Ministry of Health Services a concept plan and request for funding to begin the first stage of comprehensive clinical planning for an expansion and re-development of the hospital. RCH Foundation has agreed to partner in fundraising for this expansion that will go a long way to alleviate many of the

Lucky to be alive “
It was a day just like this,” muses Richard Krahn, as he surveys the big stretch of sky reaching over his family’s property. It is blustery and cold and not at all stable. On April 28, 2010, Richard Krahn, 42, and his nephew Cody, 22, were getting the equipment ready for spring hay chopping.

Stationed at one of two of the province’s major trauma centres, Fyvie is the only trauma nurse practitioner in B.C. “Trauma patients require the utilization of nearly every disciplinary resource we have available,” says Kathleen. “Doctors, nurses, respiratory, pharmacists, lab, blood bank, physio, rehab, nutritionists, social workers and more are mobilized. It is always awe-inspiring to me when I look at someone like Richard and realize how many people supported his recovery.” Through Spring 2010, Richard pushed onward with his recovery, telling everyone that he would be out of hospital by July as he and his wife, Dawn, had a family camping vacation planned for August. Physicians tried to manage Richard’s expectations, stating that with support, he would be able to walk again, but it was more likely that he wouldn’t fully recover from his injuries until December 2010 or later. “I knew I was lucky to be alive, and what kept me going was knowing that I would walk again,” said Richard, who is a father of three young daughters. And with that determination, Richard was walking in a matter of months after his leg amputation, and by the end of July, just as he predicted, he was back at home. Although unable to go camping, Richard was able to meet his next goal – to walk into Christmas dinner on crutches – and every subsequent goal he has set for himself.

Richard was lubricating the chains on a tractor when his coveralls got caught on the rotating shaft, pulling Richard’s leg inward while he screamed at Cody to shut off the machine. Cody shut down the engine and called 911. Upon arrival, the air ambulance team assessed Richard’s situation and made the decision to place him in a drug-induced coma. Richard was airlifted to RCH, where he was met by the trauma team, including surgeon Dr. Naisan Garraway. “Richard came in fairly unstable and had lots of bleeding,” recalls Dr. Garraway. “We

RCH’s New Multipurpose Interventional Suite Designed to provide care for more than 1,400 cardiac and stroke patients each year
...continued from page 1 Tim began to improve. Within days, the intra-aortic balloon assist was removed. Tim spent 4 days in ICU and was then transferred to a recovery ward before being discharged home. Today, Tim’s heart has fully recovered and is life has returned to normal. Tim is just one of the more than 2,200 angioplasty patients treated each year at RCH, the heart centre for the Fraser Health region. Although one of five heart centres in the province, RCH provides one-third of all angioplasties in B.C. RCH. However, RCH cannot keep up with the increasing demand for specialized cardiac services. In fact, one-third of Fraser Health’s cardiac patients have to travel outside the region for care. Plans are underway to redevelop and expand Royal Columbian Hospital site. But this expansion will take several years, and something needs to be done immediately to relieve the strain. Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation is raising $2.8 million to build a Multipurpose Interventional Suite (MPIS). This suite will enable the hospital to maintain the exceptional standards of health care British Columbians depend on, providing care for more than 1,400 cardiac and stroke patients annually, while expansion plans continue. “It is the best reward a hospital and the entire team of doctors and nurses can have, when a patient does so well after such a dramatic presentation,” says Dr. Dorval. “The burden of heart disease is increasing. It is straining our ability to deliver emergency care around the clock and to treat patients before they become emergencies. Medical technology is constantly improving and evolving. We need help in our drive to build a state-of-the-art suite with specialized instruments for cardiac and vascular interventions so that others may some day benefit as the Delesalle family has.” Tim and Karen and the Delesalle family’s related companies have pledged a donation of $55,000 towards the funding of the MPIS. “Since being discharged from my stay at RCH, I have been overwhelmed to learn the number of people who touched my life throughout my event and recovery, starting with my wife Karen and family and my new RCH family of staff, technicians, nurses, interns and doctors. The support and care was immediate, unconditional, thorough and beneficial. It is crucial to place the necessary tools in the professionals’ hands to allow this valuable work to succeed. RCH truly needs our support,” says Tim.
Tim and Karen Delesalle enjoy preparing a healthy dinner together.
RCHF needs your help to raise $2.8 million
The Multipurpose Interventional Suite will be used for a range of life-saving clinical services, including cardiac care, medical imaging, neurosurgical diagnoses and treatment of aneurysms and stroke. In the first year alone we will be able to: • Implant 650 pacemakers, keeping 650 hearts beating strongly and regularly. • Provide even more than the 4,800 cardiac catheterizations already performed. • Perform 195 ablations to correct abnormal heart rhythms, one of the leading causes of stroke. • Implant 100 internal cardiac defibrillators, helping to control potentially lethal heart rhythms and preventing sudden cardiac arrest.

Avoid a second heart attack. Dr. Gerald Simkus, Program Medical Director, Cardiac Services, shares these health tips to reduce your risk: • Diligently follow your physician’s plan to stabilize and prevent further heart damage. • Monitor blood pressure regularly, keeping it under 120/80 and controlled through a healthy diet and exercise, lowering stress and oral medications. • Quit Smoking! Smoking quadruples your chances of having a second heart attack. Investigate treatment plans to help you stop. • Speak to a doctor or registered dietician for help on how to lose excess weight. • Regularly exercise. 30 to 60 minutes of moderate walking at least three to four times a week can help with weight management, cholesterol and high blood pressure. • Encourage your family to change their eating habits and support you. • Reduce sodas and fruit juices and drink lots of water.
Dr. Gerald Simkus has some good advice for you.

Saying no to seconds
RCH’s new Interdisciplinary Heart Health Program
S
arojni Reddy, 59, of Surrey, is an RCH cardiac patient. She describes the transition from hospital to home as unexpectedly rapid and recalls feeling apprehensive of the future. “I hardly had time to realise the impact of what had happened to me and I was at home again, trying to make sense of new medication and expected changes to my diet and exercise. Then I had a second heart attack.” According to Dr. Gerald Simkus, Program Director Fraser Health Cardiac Services, the chances of a second attack are between five and 15 percent in the year following a first heart attack. Simkus states that although there are well-known steps that patients can take to reduce their risk of both a first and subsequent heart attack, the challenge remains for physicians and healthcare staff to engage patients in meaningful behaviour change when they leave the hospital. In an effort to prevent RCH’s heart attack patients from becoming ‘repeat customers’, the RCH Cardiac Services team is developing the Interdisciplinary Heart Health Program - a
program offered to patients who have experienced a heart attack. Patients will be able to access the program’s multidisciplinary team for assessment and education. The health care professional team includes nurse clinicians, dieticians, a pharmacist and cardiologists who provide ongoing support and answer questions. Recognizing this groundbreaking initiative, AstraZeneca Canada Inc. stepped forward with a donation of $170,000 in February to help support funding for the Interdisciplinary Heart Health Program, as well as a Fraser Health South Asian Cardiovascular Research Program. “Supporting RCH’s educational program for cardiac patients is an important step in improving the lives of cardiac patients – not only in the Fraser region, but throughout the entire province,” said Marion McCourt, President and CEO of AstraZeneca Canada Inc. “By working with leading cardiac institutions like RCH to address key health care challenges, we firmly believe we can make the biggest impact in improving patient care.”

onors, physicians, corporate executives and community leaders shared the spotlight on March 3, 2011 when Royal Columbian Hospital (RCH) Foundation hosted its SHINE Gala at the newly redeveloped CBC Broadcast Centre. In one evening, 400 guests helped raise more than $200,000 for RCH to expand specialized care for heart disease and stroke patients. “We have been proud to partner with RCH Foundation for their SHINE Gala for the past four years, and this year was even better because we hosted this fantastic fundraising event right here in our home!” said CBC News Vancouver host and SHINE Gala Co-emcee Gloria Macarenko. Tony Parsons, CBC News Vancouver host and SHINE Gala co-emcee, agreed: “Many people are unaware of the critical trauma, cardiac and neuro care role that Royal Columbian Hospital plays in B.C.’s healthcare system, and so we are proud to help RCH Foundation broadcast how important RCH is to the people of this province.”

Fast Giants run out of gas at Telus
Team finishes fourth with best record at Cup
BY TOM BERRIDGE SPORTS EDITOR tberridge@royalcityrecord.com
The Northwest Giants were denied a medal at the Telus Cup Canadian midget hockey championships on Sunday. The Giants were the No. 1 seed heading into the championship semifinals but came away empty handed in the medal round. The Burnaby-based hockey team fell 5-3 to Quebec champion Lions du Lac St-Louis in the bronze-medal final. TheWinnipegThrashers went on take a third consecutive gold medal for a Western region club at the Telus Cup, defeating the London Junior Knights 3-1 in the championship final. “Who would have thought that I’d be saying that fourth place in Canada sounds pretty good,” said Giants head coach Todd Harkins from St. John’s, Nfld. on Sunday. “We did everything we could have. We just ran out of gas. It’s tough. A lot of those teams were bigger and stronger than us, but it was a great opportunity for all of us to be a part of.” Jackson Houck got the Giants out to a quick start in the consolation final, scoring a pair of goals, including his tournamenttopping ninth marker, three minutes apart late in the first period. Alex Kerfoot, who also scored nine times for the Giants and led all scorers with 22 points, gave the Pacific region champs a 30 lead early in the middle frame, before the Lions rallied to pull even heading into the final period.

◗ ROAD RUNNING
Douglas team third in Sun Run The Douglas College running club placed third in the educational institution category at the recent Vancouver Sun Run. Alexander Gibson led the Douglas men with a 38:06 time in the 10 kilometre run. Tamara Harris was the fastest club female with a 44:01 clocking. Douglas ran an accumulated time of 7:39.28, averaging 45:57 per runner, to finish behind category winner UBC Triathlon Club and Sauder School of Business. Dawit Gebremedhin had the second-fastest time among club runners, posting a 41:20 finish. Matt
Battocchio was next in 42:26. Jerin Mece, Emily Weekes, Megan Fretter, Elena Kinakin, Nicholas Poljer and Rebecca Innis also had their times factor in the team’s overall clocking. Carollynn Fong, Jayes Waymen, Bethany Mayer and Alex Pavel also competed for the Douglas club. The team had some good results at the recent Ralph Vernacchia track meet hosted by Western Washington University. Harris won her heat in the women’s 400m, while Gibson posted a personal
best in the men’s 1,500m with a time of 4:35.82. Battocchio had a fine run in the men’s 800m, clocking a 2:19.96 time. Elsewhere, Douglas College alumnus Kerry Kazuta had a great race at the Oregon Relays in Eugene last weekend. Kazuta, a member of last year’s provincial crosscountry team, placed fifth overall in the men’s 5,000m, running a personal-best time of 14:34.76. Kazuta’s time was 2.51 seconds off the winning time and just 0.12 hundredths of a second from third and a podium finish.

◗ TRACK AND FIELD
Rivals meet again at Achilles Simon Fraser University and the University of B.C. will renew the rivalry at the ninth annual Achilles Cup track and field meet on Wednesday. The Clan is the defending cup holder and holds the edge 4-3-1 all-time against its crosstown rivals. The Clan is coming off a number of impressive showings in recent meets in California, where SFU qualified 16 athletes for the NAIA national championships. SFU looks to make up most of its points in the middle distance events. Brianna Kane and Olivia Brennan posted the top two times in the 800 metres at last year’s Achilles Cup. More recently, senior Jessica Smith and junior Helen Crofts placed second and third, respectively, in the 800m at the Mt. SAC relays, posting the top-two times in the NAIA. The track competition gets underway at 4:15 p.m. with the women’s 200m. Field athletes will compete in the high jump, long jump, shot put and javelin at the meet.

second period on goals by Houck and Kerfoot. The Giants were forced to come back a second time, with Houck forcing overtime with his second goal of the game in the final frame. London’s Adam Rzeszutko scored early in the first OT to send the Knights into the final, making the Knights the first one-win team to beat a No. 1 seed in the semifinals in the tournament’s 33-year history. The Giants were riding a six-game win streak, dating back to their twogame sweep over Red Deer in the regional playoffs, into the final game of the round robin at the Telus Cup. “We’re not a two-player hockey team. We play everybody and expect everyone to play hard,” said Harkins. “But we could have used secondary scoring in the last two days. I think we did everything we could. ... It wasn’t the game plan.”
Giants 12, Winnipeg Thrashers 5 Reinhart was named player of the game following a nine-point start, including a hat trick. Kerfoot added two goals and five assists. Houck also tallied three times for the Giants.

Best of the best: Northwest Giants Alex Kerfoot, in dark, was named the most valuable player at the Telus Cup. As a developmental league, Harkins believes it will be tough for a B.C. major midget club to match the season of this year’s Giants.

“There are a lot of great memories. The kids should keep their heads up and know they had an amazing year,” Harkins said.
In 2007, a Giants team also placed fourth at the Telus Cup as the Pacific rep after host Red Deer defeated the B.C. team in the regional final.
Douglas College is currently sitting in third place in the Northwest association North region baseball league. Douglas swept a weekend series against Shoreline, taking a pair of doubleheaders from the last-place school, including Sunday’s 5-3 and 11-5 wins. The Royals trail leader Bellevue and Everett with a 9-7 season record.

StudentsalsolearnXHTML,CSS,andActionscript. specialists, or other roles in the digital media and graphics field. “There is a strong demand in BC for workers with the skills and training they receive in this program,” says Larry Heinzlmeir, Vice-President of Marketing, Vancouver Career College. “The Graphic Design Technology program serves this industry demand by producing highly skilled design technology professionals who are assets to their employers.” Vancouver Career College is dedicated to providing students with the highest standard of education and career training.
