Different election – same result. New Westminster-Coquitlam voters have once again elected NDP candidate Fin Donnelly to serve as their member of Parliament in Ottawa. As was the case in the November 2009 byelection, Donnelly received more votes that Conservative candidate Diana Dilworth, Liberal party candidate Ken Lee and Green candidate Rebecca Helps. “It was a close race, but I think obviously the people are happy with my record,” he said about his reelection. Preliminary results indicate that Donnelly received about 2,217 more votes than Dilworth. Trailing far behind were Lee, Helps and Marxist-Leninist Party candidate Roland Verrier. “I’m still shocked we lost,” said Dilworth. Donnelly is excited about returning to Ottawa and taking on a more senior role in the NDP caucus. The Conservatives will form a majority government, after getting 167 seats in the House of Commons. Having won 102 seats, the NDP will form the Official Opposition. “We’ll do our best to keep them honest,” Donnelly said. While she conceded that “losing sucks”, Dilworth told supporters she was pleased that the Conservatives had won a majority government. Dilworth told supporters that there’s always another opportunity to win in the next election. Over at the Donnelly’s election party, many New Democrats were delighted their party would be the official Opposition, but disappointed that the Conservatives would form a majority government. “We, unfortunately, now have a majority Harper government,” Donnelly said. “We have a strong group of New Democrats to fight that. ...That is exactly what we will be doing.” The local Liberal candidate said he knew his party wasn’t doing well in the campaign but ◗Crush Page 3

For the fourth time in seven years, Peter Julian will be going to Ottawa as a victorious MP. But this time, he’s bringing a lot more friends with him. The NDP made a stunning breakthrough nationally, winning 102 seats and becoming the official Opposition to the Conservatives, who, with 167 seats, got the majority government they’ve been looking for since 2004. As one of the most veteran NDP members in Ottawa, Julian seems poised for a senior role in the new NDP opposition. “It feels good,” said Julian shortly after 8:30 p.m. Monday, after the television networks had declared him a winner. “This is unprecedented, and I think it shows how hard our team worked, especially the number of young people who Peter Julian contributed to this campaign.” Incumbent MP Julian said he couldn’t have been any happier with how things went both locally and nationally for the NDP. “It’s a pretty dramatic shift in Canadian politics,” said Julian “What clearly has changed is Canadians, in a very real way, have turned to the NDP to be the government-in-waiting, the alternative government to the Conservatives.” Among the first to congratulate Julian were Kathy and Derek Corrigan. “Peter has always been very competent, but now, he’ll have a higher public profile and more opportunities to speak on behalf of Burnaby,” said Kathy, the MLA for Burnaby-Deer Lake. Burnaby Mayor Derek Corrigan was even more effusive in his praise. “Peter’s future is unlimited,” said Derek. “I think we’ll see how great his potential is with the NDP becoming the official Opposition.” Julian’s victory was never in doubt, as he increased his popular vote to almost 50 per cent of the 44,719 ballots cast in Burnaby-New Westminster. ◗Julian Page 4

◗ FEDERAL ELECTION 2011

City’s NDPers tickled with historic gains

BY THERESA MCMANUS REPORTER tmcmanus@royalcityrecord.com

It was a day many New Democrats thought would take years to come - or might never arrive in their lifetimes. On Monday night, the Conservatives won 167 seats to form a majority government, having won two consecutive minority governments. New Westminster city councillor Jaimie McEvoy attended Donnelly’s election party. “The Canucks are in the second round of the playoffs, Bin Laden is dead, the NDP is the official Opposition

– wake me up tomorrow,” said Coun. Jaimie McEvoy, who attended New Westminster-Coquitlam NDP candidate Fin Donnelly’s election party on Monday night. McEvoy, who was wearing an Orange Crush T-shirt, was pleased that voters returned Donnelly and Burnaby-New Westminster NDP incumbent Peter Julian to Ottawa. “Well-earned victory. They are both good representatives for the community,” he said. “They work for New Westminster. They won seats because they earn it. They are both hard workers and they deserve it.” Tania Jarzebiak, president of the New WestminsterCoquitlam NDP constituency association, has been

involved in political campaigns since 1997 and has worked on Parliament Hill. She was thrilled that the NDP had won more than 100 seats in the 2011 general election. “We talked about how we might make it there,” she said. “I left Parliament Hill in 2006. I didn’t think I would see this happen in the next 10 to 20 years. I knew we’d continue to grow.” The NDP’s 102 seats mean it will be Canada’s official Opposition for the first time in the party’s history. “I have been voting since 1986,” said a man at Donnelly’s post-election bash. “I never thought I would see this day.”

admitted the results were worse than he’d imagined. The Liberals won a record-low 34 seats in the House of Commons. “It was quite shocking to me,” Lee said. “Many people are so disappointed, devastated. We knew early on it was going to be really bad with what was happening in Quebec and Ontario.” Lee believes Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff should have taken action earlier to address the Conservative attack ads that targeted his character. “I think the Conservative strategy, the framing of Michael Ignatieff as a certain person, worked. It’s too bad,” he said. “A lot of people say that when you keep hearing the same thing over and over, it becomes the truth. ... I think our party should have done something when he was being attacked. Michael wanted to take the high road.” Like himself, Lee said Ignatieff isn’t a career politician and may have underestimated the damage done by the ads. He said Ignatieff had “no choice” but to step down as Liberal leader after losing his own seat. Lee hopes the Liberal Party will be able to reflect and rebuild because he feels it’s needed to prevent the political polarization that exists in the United States. “We need somebody in the middle,” he said. “I hope this will be a good lesson to rebuild.” Lee is worried about the potential impacts of having a Conservative majority government in Ottawa. “Virtually, they can do whatever,” he said. “There will be no checks and balances.” Jim Sinclair, president of the B.C. Federation of Labour and a resident of New Westminster-Coquitlam, attended Donnelly’s election party. He’s also concerned that Stephen Harper will be able to push through an agenda that will include tax cuts to corporation and cuts to programs and downloading to provinces. “I think we are going to have to fight very hard in the next four years to keep our country,” he said. Sinclair said Harper’s political ideology is celebrated by the Fraser Institute – not most working Canadians. Although he topped the polls, Donnelly said he still has work to do in New Westminster. “We didn’t get all our votes out in New Westminster,” he said. “We have room for improvement in New Westminster.” In the last federal election, held in October 2008, NDP candidate Dawn Black beat Conservative Yonah Martin by less than 1,500 votes. Black resigned and went on be elected as New Westminster’s MLA and Martin was appointed to the Senate. In the November 2009 byelection, Donnelly received 12,171 votes, followed by Dilworth with 8,730 votes, Lee with 2,528 votes and Helps with 1,047 votes – all who ran in this year’s general election.

Julian: MP earns a fourth term ◗ continued from page 1

Julian’s 22,193 votes dwarfed Forseth’s 15,979, as Julian’s 49.6 per cent of the votes was almost 14 per cent higher than Forseth’s 35.7 per cent. Liberal Garth Evans finished a distant third, with 4,496 votes, or 10.1 per cent, while Green candidate Carrie McLaren got 1,788 votes, or four per cent. Also receiving votes were Libertarian Tyler Pierce, with 167 votes and Marxist-Leninist Joseph Theriault with 96 votes. Voter turnout was only 53.9 per cent, as there were 83,029 registered voters in Burnaby-New Westminster. Forseth took his defeat in stride, and the mood was bittersweet at the local Conservative party held at the Best Western Kings Inn on Kingsway. “It’s just like it was in 2006,” said Forseth. “That year, the Conservatives got back into government and I wasn’t part of it. ... This time, we get the majority we’ve been looking for and again, I wasn’t able to win my way to Ottawa.” In 2006, Forseth lost to the NDP’s Dawn Black, who won New WestminsterCoquitlam by almost 3,000 votes. When the four-term Ottawa MP – Forseth won in 1993, 1997, 2000 and 2004 previously – wanted to reenter federal politics, he had to take on Julian, another multi-term incumbent, in Burnaby-New Westminster. Forseth has waited out close battles before, having won via a judicial recount in 2004, but Monday night left little doubt who would be representing Burnaby-New Westminster in Ottawa. Forseth was sitting amongst a small group of supporters as Stephen Harper gave his election night speech on television. He thanked his supporters for all the work they had done, but even Forseth knew that beating Julian was an almost impossible task. “I wouldn’t have done anything differently,” said Forseth. “We had a good team. We offered a candi-

date with 12 years of experience in Ottawa, but that wasn’t enough.” Forseth also took the chance to thank Julian for conducting a civil and respectful campaign. “Peter and I are friendly,” said Forseth. “We had talked even before the election that we would agree to be gentlemanly. We’ve both served in the House (of Commons) together, and that means we’re part of a very exclusive fraternity.” Forseth’s political career has taken many twists and turns, and he may not be done yet. “I might be a candidate again,” said Forseth. “A number of people on the provincial scene have inquired about my availability. Tonight’s not the night to answer that question. ... What I can say is my desire in life has been to serve. I have a proven lifetime of public service.” Also licking his wounds and contemplating what the future holds was Evans, who enjoyed a Chinese dinner on Monday with supporters at Metropolis at Metrotown. “It was kind of a disaster,” said Evans on Tuesday morning. “I wasn’t surprised because our internal polls had us at 23 per cent a couple of weeks ago, so I was pretty pleased and excited. “A week later, they told me I was at 15 per cent, and then my campaign manager told me he was going to stop telling me the numbers. It was down to 12 per cent by the final weekend, and I’m just happy that I got more than 10 per cent so I get my deposit back.” Despite the numbers, Evans was happy with how the campaign went.

“We ran a good campaign,” said Evans. “We had limited resources, and we should’ve done better, but you can tell from the results that our national situation didn’t help us locally. Our leader was very intelligent, but he was on the wrong wavelength with Canadians.” Evans said he’s not ruling out another election campaign in the near future. “I haven’t decided,” he said. “I don’t know what I’m going to do, but provincially, it’s possible. And in November, there are the civic elections.” Green candidate Carrie McLaren was over-themoon happy even though she came a distant fourth. “We had a strategy to get our leader, Elizabeth May, into the House, and it worked,” said McLaren. “We had our party at the Olympic Village (in Vancouver), and everybody was so happy when they announced Elizabeth’s win.” McLaren said she didn’t expect to beat Julian, and she actually enjoyed debating him. “He’s a great guy, I learned a lot from him,” she said. “I even started following him (on social media) so that when he gives a speech in Ottawa, I get an alert.” Julian took the opportunity to thank his opponents for running a respectful and engaging campaign. “I do really respect what Paul (Forseth), Garth (Evans) and Carrie-Ann McLaren brought to this campaign,” said Julian. “We had some good debates, and we engaged voters in ways we hadn’t seen before. I thank them and applaud their efforts.”

While the Conservatives may indeed have won more seats, they are presiding over a country that, by popular vote, reflects far more of a centrist, evenhanded view of the economy, social justice and concern for the environment. Congratulations, Mr. Harper, you worked hard and deserve full credit for a well-fought campaign. Now, don’t go all George W. Bush on Canada and turn that win into a future loss.

We do believe Canadians were tired of the bickering and threats of elections and simply wanted it all to end for awhile. And, frankly, we also believe that a lot of Canadians voted with their “gut.” Harper was a known quantity, and Jack Layton, while you may disagree with the NDP policies, has also gained a credible reputation. ew NDP leader Adrian Dix is trying to establish his own style of leadership and to demonstrate the once badly fractured NDP caucus is over its internal strife. But his restructuring of his caucus assignments has raised questions about whether that internal tension is truly gone. I’ve picked up some serious grumbling by some key New Democrats unhappy that Dix essentially shut leadership rival Mike Farnworth (and Farnworth’s supporters) from pivotal caucus positions. Instead, Dix installed MLAs who supported either his leadership or that of John Horgan, who is perhaps closer to Dix on a personal level than other MLAs. Of course, Dix has every right to appoint whoever he wants to various posts (although some positions, such as caucus chair, are elected by the caucus). But one can’t help contrasting his treatment of Farnworth with Premier Christy Clark’s handling of her chief leadership rival, Kevin Falcon. Clark appointed Falcon finance minister and deputy premier. Dix, on the other hand,

removed Farnworth from the pivotal position of Opposition house leader and also moved him out of the public safety critic position. Farnworth garnered widespread praise for his performance in both roles. As critic, he actually convinced the government to bring in legislation that he was specifically calling for (such as new laws dealing with body armour and armoured cars) to fight organized gangs. And Farnworth’s removal as house leader carries with it a hefty personal financial cost as well. He now loses the $20,000 stipend that comes with the job. Dix, of course, denies there’s any payback going on here. He told me he considers Farnworth’s appointment as health critic his key appointment and insists Farnworth is a great friend. But there’s a tiresome routine that comes with being health critic. Dix was the former health critic, of course, and he started out well in that post. But over time, his criticisms became relentlessly similar and all echoed the refrain that all problems in the system could be fixed by simply putting more and more money into it. Farnworth would be wise to steer clear of that money trap and focus on such issues as a looming shortage of doctors, nurses and technologists (if you think MRI wait times are too long now, just wait a few years

Hume Park brings many benefits

Dear Editor:

Blaming the dwindling numbers at Hume Park School on lack of parental interest, as was suggested in the local papers recently, seems like interesting mischief in light of the fact that two years ago the school was a vibrant and exceptional elementary school with a devoted student/family body. I know how exceptional that school was because I had the honour of being an artist-in-residence there for two years for a school-wide program put together by its truly remarkable team of teachers. I have been involved in arts programming for hundreds of teachers and schools on both coasts of North America, both public and private, and my experience at Hume lead me to conclude that its teachers had quite simply one of the most integrated, comprehensive ways of working I’ve ever

encountered – and it showed in the enthusiasm their children exhibited for the months-long Shakespeare programming we worked on together. I’d never before worked with a group of teachers who so successfully managed to integrate the school’s existing curriculum and make use of its beautiful outdoor environment to the full extent that they did. And the parents were a vocal and enthusiastic part of the equation. The teachers (and parents and students) were also well aware of the precious physical setting the school enjoys and made great use of it within the curriculum. Unlike some concrete-yard schools, Hume avails the children to the very things most educators and social commentators currently lament are detrimentally lacking in our children’s modern lives: contact with nature. There are currently a growing number of organizations and research ◗School Page 7

groups, which includes the prestigious Child & Nature network, that link children’s lack of contact with natural elements to increased depression, diabetes, attention deficit and other social ailments. Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children from Nature-Deficit Disorder, by the Audubon medal-winning author Richard Louv makes the case that the human child in nature may well be the most important indicator of our species’ future sustainability. The children at Hume not only have a natural setting in which to learn but are vigorously encouraged to use it. Whom does it serve to take it away? The bludgeoning feeling a parent experiences while trying to keep their child’s wonderful school open is not to be exaggerated. I experienced it personally when my daughter’s school, Connaught Heights Elementary, went through a similar shutdown attempt during one of the Hume attempted-closures.

To rally one’s community support and a good defence in short order while being a working parent is truly exhausting. How could the Hume parents keep this up after three years? Parents have simply been demoralized and worn down by the constant threat of closure. Despite support from the school district this past spring to stir up renewed interest in a Hume kindergarten for next year, there was a failure in follow-through; I know at least one teacher from the school spent some of her vacation working with parents to get the information out to the public. I wonder why there was no ad in the paper? Others in the larger community need to know that the small school option is available to them; the reality is, many don’t even know Hume is open. I feel sorry for the teachers and the community, but most of all, for our youth. I count my blessing that, for now, my kid’s small and wonderful school is still in operation. NDP: Dix has many challenges ahead ◗ continued from page 6

when there are fewer and fewer people properly trained to run such machines). The grumbling over the treatment of Farnworth and his supporters will likely fade away rather quickly. But Dix should remember he wasn’t the choice of an overwhelming majority of party members. His victory margin – 52 to 48 per cent – was exactly the same as the premier’s margin. He had fewer caucus endorsements than either Farnworth or Horgan. And given that his campaign signed up more than 5,000 members of the South Asian community in Surrey and its environs (representing half of his final ballot tally), Dix can hardly argue he has a strong, broad base of support throughout the province or the party.

One of Dix’s political mentors, of course, is former premier Glen Clark, for whom he worked, first as ministerial assistant and then as chief of staff in the premier’s office. I’ve always thought one of Clark’s big mistakes as premier was putting only those people who shared his class warrior views in key positions in government, either in the caucus or among staffers. As a result, whenever he made a mistake, the only people he would turn to were those who reinforced his views, rather than challenging them or changing them. It will be interesting to see if Dix makes the same mistake in the months ahead. ◗ Dealing with his caucus is one thing, but Dix already seems to have more potentially serious problems with a much larger group: the B.C. business community.

Just after he won the NDP leadership, I was a panelist (along with former NDP premier Dan Miller, longtime civil servant Chris Trumpy and the co-chair of the premier’s leadership bid, Sharon White) at a breakfast gathering in Vancouver to discuss the shifting political landscape. More than 100 people – mostly business leaders, political consultants, and industry group representatives – attended, and they seemed to share a uniformly negative view of Dix, almost to the point of actually fearing him. Based on that breakfast talk, I think the NDP can forget about any hope of successfully “reaching out” to the business community. Then again, being the class warrior that he is, I doubt Dix has any plans to try that approach anyway. Keith Baldrey is chief political reporter for Global B.C.

School district prepares balanced budget BY ALFIE LAU REPORTER alau@royalcityrecord.com

While other school districts in the province – most notably Saanich on Vancouver Island – are submitting deficit budgets, New Westminster will be submitting a balanced budget, albeit one with several caveats. School district secretary-treasurer Brian Sommerfeldt presented the budget at Wednesday night’s regular meeting. Trustees passed it through the first and second readings, with the third and final readings scheduled for May 10. By law, school boards have to submit a balanced budget. “My message is it’s a status quo budget,” Sommerfeldt told The Record on Thursday afternoon. “We’re able to manage within our funding envelope to meet our immediate needs. I’ve made it

clear that if we want to look at enhancements, we will need to look at reallocating funds.” According to Sommerfeldt’s report, the district “will enter the 2011/12 fiscal year with a stable base budget situation. The school district has developed a status quo budget that will ensure the needs of students are met, but that does not include any enhancements that would need to be funded by reallocation of resources from other parts of the budget.” On the positive side, the district has fully addressed the $889,000 deficit the district incurred during the 2008/09 fiscal year. At the end of the 2009/10 fiscal year, that deficit was down to $204,600 and that figure was whittled to zero by the end of the 2010/11 fiscal year. But on the negative side, Sommerfeldt said the proposed budget does not include any provision for wage increas-

es. Sommerfeldt is working under the assumption that while contract renewals with employee groups are currently in negotiations, any financial hits from these negotiations “will be cost-neutral to the school district or will be funded by the Ministry of Education, if negotiated provincially.” Sommerfeldt said that the 2011/12 preliminary budget will see “the school district facing structural cost pressures, principally due to the implementation of full-day kindergarten.” While Sommerfeldt expects the Ministry of Education operating grant to increase and a small increase in projected enrolment for international education, the district will have to use its $205,000 base budget surplus available in 2011/12 to balance the financial books. Sommerfeldt’s report also warns that the 2011/12 operating budget “does not

include any new initiatives or enhancements to existing programs … or any renewal of the school district infrastructure.” In addition, Sommerfeldt warned that the district has a couple of large expenditures on the horizon, including providing $10,000 per month for up to 30 months to the Massey Theatre Society during the capital construction project and providing $200,000 to the city as a contribution to the relocation of the skate park from the high school/Mercer Stadium site. “These commitments must be funded as part of the operating budget and the school district will need to begin consideration of these commitments as part of the 2012/12 operating budget. The school district’s 2010/2011 amended annual budget comes in at just under $56.7 million. www.twitter.com/AlfieLau

Schools sticking with one-week spring break BY ALFIE LAU REPORTER alau@royalcityrecord.com

While the majority of Metro Vancouver school districts are moving toward a two-week spring break, New Westminster will remain one of the few districts to have a one-week spring break. School trustees voted Wednesday night to accept superintendent John Woudzia’s conclusion that the district should keep

its one-week break. The district had canvassed for opinion, via an online survey, from March 29 to April 16, and the results showed that while 66 per cent of the overall responses favoured a two-week spring break, the more significant breakdown occurred in the parents’ category. Of the 793 parent/guardian responses received, 395 favoured a two-week break while 398 favoured a one-week break.

The almost 50-50 split was a key reason why Woudzia suggested the status quo be maintained. “In order for the school district to effect a change of this significance,” said Woudzia, “the requirement for strong and consistent support for such a transition needs to be present among all stakeholder groups. “Such a pattern was not established … with one stakeholder group expressing no clear prefer-

ence. … The parents were pretty evenly split.” In the other five stakeholder categories, all with a smaller sample size, each group favoured a two-week spring break. Of the 181 students surveyed, 86 per cent wanted another week off, while more than 90 per cent of 313 teachers surveyed wanted a two-week break. In the administrator’s category, 87.5 per cent of the 24 surveyed wanted the longer break, while

75 per cent of the 164 non-teaching employees and 61 per cent of 128 surveyed New Westminster residents favoured the two-week break. “There was no overwhelming opinion either way with parents,” said trustee James Janzen. “We’ll continue to monitor the situation, but from the survey results and John’s report, we will maintain the one-week spring break.” www.twitter.com/AlfieLau

Trudy Van Dop earns city’s 2010 Bernie Legge Cultural Award for her contributions to arts in New Westminster BY THERESA MCMANUS REPORTER tmcmanus@royalcityrecord.com

Trudy Van Dop is pleased to help shine the spotlight on the Royal City’s arts, culture and heritage. Van Dop is the 2010 recipient of the Bernie Legge Cultural Award, which is given out annually to recognize excellence, dedication and commitment to the arts in New Westminster. She said she was honoured to receive the award and be including among candidates who have made “amazing” contributions to the arts. This year’s other nominees for the Bernie Legge Cultural Award were Angie Au Hemphill, Max Jacquiard, Henry Waack and Mary Wilson. Van Dop believes the local arts community is benefiting because groups and events such as the Arts Council of New Westminster, the New Westminster Cultural Crawl and New Westminster Artists and the city are working together. She said local residents don’t have to leave the city to find good art because it’s right here in their own backyard. “I don’t see myself as an artist,” she said. “I believe all people are creative and use their creativity in different ways.” Born in Vancouver, Van Dop has lived most of her life in New Westminster. She’s found her forte in creating awareness and vehicles that highlight various art endeavours. “The awareness is really growing in the community that we have an art sector,” she said. “In the past, artists were busy creating art behind closed doors.” Van Dop sought to change that in 1999, when she started publishing the Van Dop Arts and Cultural Guide to B.C. The publication, which offers a yearround guide to arts, culture and heritage activities in B.C., started as a one-page foldout map but has grown to a 160-page publication. Van Dop developed and launched the B.C. Cultural Crawl in 2001 and started the New Westminster Cultural Crawl in 2003. More than 70 communities participate in the B.C. Cultural Crawl, which encourages support of B.C. arts and cultural tourism. In New Westminster, businesses and artists studios open their doors to the public during the cultural crawls. “It has grown – more and more art studios are opening up,” she said. “The audience that came last year was a good, quality audience;” Van Dop hopes she’s been able to remove some of the barriers that have stopped people from exploring the arts. In 1996, Van Dop opened the Van Dop

Mother’s Day art celebration

Celebrate Mother’s Day surrounded by art. Van Dop Gallery is hosting a special Mother’s Day celebration on Saturday, May 7 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. You can celebrate mom over tea in a gallery filled with a wide selection of works, featuring artwork by Martha Sturdy and Carole Arnston and jewellery by Joanna Lovett. Gallery owner Trudy Van Dop (who, incidentally, was just named the winner of the city’s 2010 Bernie Legge Cultural Award – see Theresa McManus’s feature article on page 11) runs the gallery in her home at 421 Richmond St., surrounded by lush gardens.

For those who don’t know the history of Mother’s Day, the gallery offers up this snippet of information: “The holiday found its initial roots in ancient Greek festivals honouring Rhea, the Mother of the Gods. Centuries later, the first official Mother’s Day was celebrated on May 10, 1908 and honoured the late Anne Marie Reeves Jarvis – whose daughter started a letter writing campaign to urge Congress to declare Mother’s Day a national holiday.” On May 9, 1914, President Woodrow Wilson declared that every year the second Sunday in May would be Mother’s Day. With that in mind, don’t miss out on this chance to celebrate your own mom. The Mother’s Day exhibition continues at the gallery until June 12. Gallery hours are by appointment – call 604-521-7887, or check out www.vandopgallery.com for more details.

to pop over and check it out.) A concession will be available during the sale, and there will be a free gift with every five children’s books purchased.

Symphony offers concert for mom

Young cellist Tate Zawadiuk featured in Haydn’s Concerto in C Major

Treat your mother to an afternoon at the symphony. The New Westminster Symphony Orchestra is offering a special Mother’s Day concert on Sunday, May 8 at Massey Theatre. Included in the program are works by Mozart, Handel, Haydn and Bizet. Music director Jin “Jack” Zhang will also introduce concertgoers to young cellist Tate Zawadiuk. “This should be one of the season’s great concerts,” said local arts promoter Tony Antonias. “You’ll see and hear magnificent playing and sound from this young cello

star who has won many accolades during his young career.” Tate will be featured in Haydn’s Concerto in C Major for cello and orchestra – a work of extreme technical demands. The Mother’s Day concert at the Massey also includes Mozart’s Symphony in G Major, some lovely excerpts from Handel’s famous Water Music Suite, and Symphony No. 1 by Bizet. “This is a Mother’s Day concert of exceptional quality,” Antonias said. “So treat mom to an afternoon she’ll talk about long after the music is over.” The concert takes place at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 8 at Massey Theatre. Admission is by donation. For more about the orchestra, check out their website at www.nwso.ca. www.twitter.com/TheRecord FEATURING:

The association’s Simon Fraser branch is creating an annual community event to raise awareness for mental health and to reduce stigma surrounding mental illness. It will host its first Miles for Mental Health Run and Walk on Saturday, May 7 at Queen’s Park in New Westminster. A press release notes that one in five Canadians will experience a mental illness. It also states that suicide is the second leading cause of death among people aged 16 to 24 and that mental illness is the leading cause of hospitalization among 20- to 44year-olds. “The event will bring our community together in support of healthy minds, healthy bodies, mental health awareness and stigma reduction,” said a press release. “The 2.5-kilometre walk and five-km run will take place in Queen’s Park, New Westminster on May 7 and draw participants from throughout the Lower Mainland. The upbeat family event will feature music, food, an art exhibition and keynote addresses.” Registration for individuals ranges from $20 (early bird) to $30 (day of run), but family rates and

Live life according to your highest values our hospital, where family members and hospital staff were struggling to make the best decisions for a patient who was no longer able to make autonomous decisions. I began each consultation by affirming our common goal: to bring to the table all that we know about the medical situation and to seek the best solutions for this loved one and patient from that individual’s perspective; to hear how this person found meaning in life and to make decisions aligned with what he or she would have chosen – in essence, to hear the patient’s voice. The principles of medical ethics – autonomy (respect for the individual’s choice), beneficence (to do good), nonmaleficence (to do no harm) and justice (to be fair) – form the foundation of medical practice. Because they underlie all that we do, these principles should serve as the moral compass guiding our daily work. I used to say that the road to hell (or the intensive care unit) was paved by clinical practice guidelines. If we blindly react to a medical condition with the usual protocols of assessment and intervention, we can make the wrong decisions for an individual. All that we do in health care – our investigations, our treatments, including surgery and medications – are tools. Medical ethics guides us in choosing

Some tips for getting the best raspberries gest some varieties and the best time to buy and plant them? Could you give some fertilizing recommendations? Dave Kirk, Coquitlam

BRANCHING OUT ANNE MARRISON

Question: The winter before last, we lost some raspberry canes that were planted 15 to 20 years ago. Regrowth of canes was poor, and the berry harvest last summer was very sparse. I suspect it’s time to plant some new stock. Can you sug-

Answer: One of the best raspberries for quality of berries and ease of maintenance is Tulameen. If you cut down all the canes to the ground when fruiting dwindles in fall, you’ll have a late-summer and fall harvest. If you cut only the old canes and let the new ones alone, Tulameen will produce fruit in June and give

you a small fall harvest too. Good, large berries can be harvested in June from the Qualicum, Malahat and Chilcotin varieties. These need to have the old, fruited canes pruned out to leave space for the new canes which will provide next June’s crop It’s important to buy and plant raspberries in early spring. Nurseries get in good selections of canes in March or April based on how many they expect to sell. By May, the most popular kinds may be sold out.

Viral infections often cause raspberries to go downhill after years in the same spot. If possible, it would be best to plant in an area that’s never had raspberries in it. The new bed should be enriched with compost, Sea Soil or well-rotted manure and as you plant the raspberries, spread out their roots into the soil. After watering well, top the soil with a mulch that will hold in moisture through the summer. This could include compost, straw or grass clippings.

Raspberries produce huge crops if they’re given moist, rich soil.

Question: Recently my family and I moved here from Alaska. I am planting a new garden area and wanted to put some glads in it. When would be a good time to plant them? Heather Saloka, Chilliwack Answer: I’d say the beginning of May should be fairly safe this year. Planting of summer bulbs always depends on the kind of spring we’re

having, and this year the temperatures have been cooler than usual. But planting can be adjusted for a warm garden microclimate. For instance, if you’ll be putting your gladiolas in close to the south or west side of your house where sun-warmed walls keep night temperatures a bit higher, you could probably plant them a week or so earlier. Hoping for the best is NOT a plan. Are you ready? Canadians consider our country to be the safest in the world in which to live. Yet, we are not immune from the threat of natural hazards – like landslides, flooding, storm surges and earthquakes – or disasters caused by human hands – power blackouts, chemical spills, flu outbreaks and even computer viruses. Eighty-five per cent of Canadians agree that having an emergency plan is important in ensuring their and their family’s safety; yet, only four out of every 10

actually have one. With careful planning and preparation, you can be ready for an emergency and minimize the impact on your family, business and property. Emergency Preparedness Week (May 1-7) encourages Canadians to be prepared to copy on their own for at least the first 72 hours of an emergency while rescue workers help those in urgent need. This special week is a national effort of municipal, provincial and territorial emergency management organizations and Public

Royals lose in heartbreaking Cup final Burnaby’s u-14 team falls to Victoria Capitals in a 4-3 shootout for Coastal Cup BY ALFIE LAU REPORTER alau@royalcityrecord.com

There were no words that coaches Wayne Shaw, Mark Berry and Brad Achtem could say to their u-14 Burnaby Royals to make their team feel better. The Royals had just lost a 4-3 shootout (2-2 in regulation time) to the Victoria Capitals 97 in the u-14 Coastal Cup A final at Minoru Park in Richmond, and none of the boys could even look up at their coaches. “You’ll learn from this,” said Berry. “Remember how lousy this feels. You have no reason to keep your heads down. You gave everything you had, and somebody had to lose.” The Royals had fought back from 10 and 2-1 deficits on goals from Jacob McMahon and Christian Nichele and looked on its way to victory when goalkeeper Luciano Trasolini made a diving hand save on the Capitals’ first shot in the penalty shootout. But successive misses by the Royals, first Max Williams hitting the post and then Joel Padmore hitting the crossbar, doomed the Royals to runner-up status. On both misses, the Victoria keeper was clearly beaten, but the iron proved to be too much for the Royals. “We couldn’t have asked for any more from the boys,” said Berry. “They showed a tremendous amount of heart coming back, but they just ran out of gas at the end.” Because of a realignment in the development program, the loss was actually the final game for the boys as a team. “Some of these boys will still end up playing with each other, but some will go off and play for other teams,” said Berry. “It’s a shame they couldn’t have gone off together with a win.”

Jason Lang/THE RECORD

Playing with heart: The Burnaby Royals’ Jacob McMahon (in red) in action against Langley United in the Coastal A Cup u-14 quarter-final. The Royals made it to the finals but lost a heartbreaker in a shootout against the Victoria Capitals. Berry said the team’s resiliency was best exemplified by the goaltending of Trasolini. “He got us here,” said Berry. “He came up large in the semifinal before this, and we really thought it was looking good when he made that stop (in the shootout).” In fact, Trasolini almost extended the

shootout, getting a hand on the final Victoria shot, but not enough, as it slipped underneath his outstretched fingers and into the bottom corner of the net. “He guessed the right side, but sometimes you need luck as well,” said Berry. Berry said the unusually warm weather also played a part in the final result.

“Everybody was really tired because it was a lot warmer (Sunday) than any other game or practice this year,” said Berry. “I told them before the extra time that they just had two 10-minute halves to go, and it wasn’t going to be easy. … It would have been nice to be celebrating a win, but they gave everything they had.”

Salmonbellies off Junior Lakers down Saints to a shaky start BY ALFIE LAU REPORTER alau@royalcityrecord.com

BY ALFIE LAU REPORTER alau@royalcityrecord.com

It wasn’t the start the New Westminster Jr. Salmonbellies were looking for. The Salmonbellies spotted the Shamrocks a 7-0 first-period lead before Drew House got the ‘Bellies only first-period marker. But the damage was already done, as the Shamrocks coasted to a 13-7 victory at Bear Mountain Arena Sunday. The ‘Bellies fall to 0-2 and host Delta on Tuesday night at Queen’s Park Arena after Record deadlines. The ‘Bellies were led by Mark Negrin, who had a hat trick, and Brandon Goodwin and Jimmy McBride, who each chipped in with three assists. Other New Westminster goals

came from Luke Gillespie, Patrick Spencer and Jeff Sproule. Victoria had a balanced attack, with hat tricks from Dane Schoor and Brody Eastwood. Chipping in with two goals each were Blair Pinnock and Adam Wallace, while singles went to Conrad Chapman, Chris Wardle and Tom Arsenault. The game was marred by a litany of fights and scuffles, as the teams combined for 207 penalty minutes. New Westminster had 112 of those minutes, while Victoria had 95. Brandon Mulligan had a tough night in the Royal City net, giving up four goals in 17 minutes of action before giving way to Frankie Scigliano, who fared no better, giving up nine goals while making 25 saves. www.twitter.com/AlfieLau

A five-goal second period was all the Burnaby Jr. Lakers needed Sunday night as they handily dispatched the Port Coquitlam Saints 12-5 in their B.C. Junior A Lacrosse League season opener. The Lakers were led by captain Jaxson Lee, who had three goals and four assists, but the bigger story was the secondary scoring. Linemate Mackenzie Davis had two goals and three assists for a five-point outing while Colton Dow had two goals and an assist in only one period of action. Dow missed the first two periods because of commitments up at Simon Fraser University,buthisthird-period efforts salted the game away for the rebuilding Lakers. “The personal stats don’t

mean much to me,” said Lee after the game. “It’s all about the team. As long as we win, I’m happy.” Davis concurred, saying Lee deserves a lot of the credit for pulling the team together. “Our captain, he’s awesome, he’s our leader,” said Davis. “When we’re down, he pulls us back up and he holds us all accountable. … To get this win, it feels good and shows we’re on the right track.” Incoming Jr. Lakers head coach John Wilson said the keys to Sunday’s victory were strong defence and goaltending. “Patrick (Bayliss) made some key saves for us early, and our defence really put pressure on PoCo,” said Wilson, a former Coquitlam Adanac and New Westminster Salmonbellie with two Mann

Cup rings on his fingers. “We’ve got a pretty good bunch of kids here, and they’re all willing to listen and learn.” Wilson said the message to his team during pre-season was that even though the Lakers have a storied history in the Minto Cup, that meant nothing to him. “The past is the past, and no one is guaranteed anything in the future,” he said. “We told all the guys they had to compete for jobs and the guys who compete best will get the playing time.” The Saints were led by Jordan Schulstad, who had two goals and two helpers in the loss. Other Saints goals came from Adam Schulstad, Cody Craven and Cory Cop. The Lakers host Langley on Sunday, May 8 at 7 p.m. at Copeland.

Spitfires lose in final

BY ALFIE LAU REPORTER alau@royalcityrecord.com

Having already earned automatic qualification into the provincial championships this July in Penticton, the u-17 South Burnaby Spitfires didn’t look that interested in their Coastal Cup final against Lakehill Emery Electric of Victoria. And it was that complacency that led to a 1-0 loss on Sunday afternoon at Minoru Park in Richmond. “We didn’t have a great week of practice, and I think it showed out there,” said coach Bob Dumont. “We’re a team that has struggled to score goals all year, and that came back to bite us today.” The only goal came in the first half, when Lakehill’s Adam Almeida beat South Burnaby goalkeeper Anis Ali to a long goal kick and headed it into the open net. “I just anticipated the ball and nodded it in,” said an ecstatic Almeida afterwards. “This was huge for us because last year, we got knocked out in the first round of the Coastal Cup, and now we came back and won. It’s a great feeling to win.” Dumont had a different perspective on the goal. “We were controlling the game, and it was a long

The Spitfires lost the Coastal Cup final 1-0. clearing ball that took a huge bounce,” said Dumont. “We got caught and we were a bit unlucky.” After the goal, the Island squad defended like demons. “I was trying to get our guys to go up in the final 10 minutes,” said Dumont. “We just couldn’t get that bounce and that goal we

needed.” Dumont said the loss should motivate his squad as they start preparations for July’s provincials. “When these boys were u-14s, they lost the Coastal Cup final and went on to win the provincials,” he said. “We’re hoping the same thing happens this time around too.”
