STANLEY CUP FEVER
Pubs score, Canucks assist BY ALAN CAMPBELL
acampbell@richmond-news.com
CHUNG CHOW/RICHMOND NEWS
Canucks fans watch Game 4 intently at the Pumphouse Pub as their team attempts to beat the Chicago Blackhawks. The Canucks’ playoff performance is helping pack local bars.
There’s more than just thousands of Vancouver Canuck puckheads crossing their fingers and toes and praying to the east during their team’s quest for hockey’s holy grail. Richmond’s pub and bar owners are also waving their playoff towels every time the Canucks stick one into the five-hole during the Stanley Cup playoffs — not least because their premises have been bursting at the seams when the ‘Nucks take to the ice in the post-season. In short, business booms when the Canucks get into the playoffs and fly the Vancouver flag deep into spring. None more so in the city than J. Malone’s Bar and Grill on Blundell and Garden City roads, where hockey-mad fans have been pouring in to see their beloved team take on the Chicago Blackhawks in the first round. “We’ve actually had a big surge,” said J. Malone’s owner John Grewal. “Anytime the boys have a big game, we’re pretty much packed in here, but especially during the playoffs.” see Business page 4

‘Only Chinese’ need apply rental advert sparks outcry ‘Appalling’ posting is a step backwards in a fight for equality in Canada, says resident and former school trustee An online advertisment for an apartment rental in Richmond has sparked outrage after it stated “only Chinese” need apply. The offending Craigslist ad was spotted by prospective renter, longtime Richmond resident and former school trustee, Patricia Whittaker. Whittaker, who is of African origin, was checking rentals in the city centre when she came across the posting for the Mandalay building on Hemlock Drive, by Garden City and Cook roads. $

But her disbelief when reading the “only Chinese” conditions quickly turned to anger when the realization set in. “Chinese only? This is Canada for crying out loud,” said Whittaker, who runs the non-profit Centre for Integration of African Immigrants in New Westminster. “A lot of the time when potential landlords hear accents or see names they don’t like, they come out with the excuses. “But I’ve never seen anything as blatant as this. “I’m absolutely appalled, and it can’t be happening here in Canada.” If it was the other way around, and the

ad read “only Caucasians,” Whittaker said there would be “total outrage.” “I’m not sure why (the landlord is) doing this, but it’s completely wrong,” she added. “There’s a lot of Chinese money coming into the housing market here right now. And these new owners are our landlords of the future. “I wonder where we are going with this? Will it be a case that only Chinese people will be able to rent an apartment?” After being contacted via email by the News, a person calling themselves Lisa Yeh claimed she was, in fact, the tenant of the
apartment in question. Yeh said she’d been asked by her landlord to place the ad and had written “only Chinese” because the owner can only communicate in Mandarin. “They would like to have Chinese tenants,” Yeh wrote. After hearing that the advert was causing concern, Yeh apologized and offered to remove the posting. She later told the News that she’d taken the ad off Craigslist and has now posted it on a Chinese-speaking newspaper’s website. see Ad page 4

Liberals employ the charm offensive
The debonair Justin Trudeau jets in to help Joe Peschisolido’s federal election campaign Richmond’s Liberal candidate Joe Peschisolido imported some Eastern Canadian star power Tuesday when Justin Trudeau flew in to help out. Flaunting the bilingual ease and charm of his famous father — former prime minister Pierre Trudeau – the emerging Liberal star rode the Canada Line in from YVR with a gaggle of party candidates and MPs in tow. “I think it’s fantastic that they’re on the SkyTrain,” said undecided voter Sara Byblow, a 22-year-old model scout/fashion consultant who had a brief conversation with Trudeau on her commute into work. “It’s definitely a unique way that they’re out getting the word out. Nontraditional marketing is the way to go,” she added. Trudeau started his train ride in the Richmond riding, where Peschisolido is trying to unseat Conservative MP Alice Wong. When Peschisolido was asked how the race was going, Trudeau adeptly added his political spin: “I’ve been in the House for two and a half years – all (Wong) does is read out questions the bureaucrats hand her. We’d be much better served by a candidate like Joe.” Trudeau was in Blundell Centre for less than an hour around 5 p.m. on Tuesday, visiting retail shops along with an entourage of supports. Trudeau has offered the Liberal Party three days outside his riding of Papineau, where the first-term Liberal MP is locked in a tight race with former Bloc Quebecois MP Vivian Barbot. “I don’t like being out of my riding — I’m spending one day in Toronto and two days in

It was a Liberal Party decision.” Almost from the day he entered politics, Trudeau has been pegged as a future Liberal leader and prime minister. Asked about it again Tuesday, he was polite but slightly peeved. “There will be no leadership contest in the
Liberal Party, because Mr. Ignatieff is going to be an exceptional prime minister,” said Trudeau, who after several more leadership inquiries quipped: “You can go ask Ben Mulroney that question.” — Postmedia News
Up to 200 recruits needed for election day army Elections Canada is sending out an S.O.S. to Richmond residents for the federal election. Elections Canada said it is between 150 and 200 temporary employees people short of what it needs to help pull off a successful election day on Monday, May 2. The organization has a large number of paid positions needing filled for the one day. And it says stepping up to help the country run a federal election can be a rewarding experience that looks good on any resume. “We have enough for the advanced poll, but it’s elec-
tion day itself that we need another 150 to 200 people,” said Elections Canada’s Susan Friend. “We always do some recruitment during the campaign and we use various sources to find these people. “But often, it’s when something appears in the newspapers that it catches their attention and they want to get involved.” Friend said that so many people are needed in Richmond because it’s a larger than normal riding. There are a few conditions that have to be met before you can apply for the positions,
most notably: You have to live in the Richmond riding and you must be age 16 or over. “It pays a minimum of $160 for the day, but it’s a long day, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and there’s usually stuff to do before and after,” added Friend. There are several jobs that can be applied for, including polling clerks, registration officers and information officers. People can apply online at www.elections.ca. The website’s employment section has all the information you will need and the pay scale. Or, you can call 1-866-5467615.

Business: Up 20 per cent ing back at other times as well. “So I guess the playoffs do have a bit of a spin-off other than the hockey. “The longer the boys keep going, the better.” Over at the Sportstown Tavern on No. 5 Road underneath Highway 91, manager Glenn Hutton is praying the Canucks don’t suffer a collapse against the Blackhawks. “I’ve been here for 10 years and if they go out in the first
round, it takes around three weeks for business to recover,” Hutton said. “It goes up 20 per cent for sure (if the Canucks are in the playoffs). “I’ve been at 100 per cent (capacity) for every game so far, so I’m hoping they go all the way.” Hutton said he also notices customers new and old returning to the tavern outside of Canucks’ playoff games.
Ad: ‘Simply not right’ Continued from page 1 Henry Beh, executive director of the Richmond Chinese Community Society, branded the “only Chinese” condition as “stupid.” “This is simply not right in today’s society and we would certainly not support this kind of language,” Beh said. “Craigslist is supposed to screen that kind of thing, looking for anything that’s discriminatory. “This is the first time I’ve ever heard of something like this in 38 years. “In this situation, I think the tenant should have told the owner that it was inappropriate. I remember years ago, in Richmond, there were a few restaurants that had only Chinese signs up, but they had to change.” Beh said that when he sends out information on behalf of his organization, he communicates it in several languages. “Just so that I’m fair to everyone.” Meanwhile, Whittaker said she’s spent her whole life dealing with discrimination, but she’s never come across something so blatant. “If we’re renting to Asians only, where do we stop?” she said.

The family of Orion Hutchinson is upset the RCMP officer charged in the crash that took his life remains suspended with pay more than two years later. Cpl. Benjamin Monty Robinson is one of the four Richmond RCMP officers involved in the Tasering death of Robert Dziekanski on Oct. 14, 2007 at Vancouver International Airport. Robinson was also involved in the Oct. 25, 2008 crash that killed Orion Hutchinson. Robinson, who was off duty at the time, is facing a charge of attempting to obstruct justice. At a preliminary inquiry this week, a Surrey Provincial Court judge deemed there is enough evidence to go to trial. The officer was suspended with pay following the incident. While the family is relieved Robinson will face trial, Judith Hutchinson, Orion’s mother, said they have a hard time dealing with the fact he has remained suspended with pay. “While we have endured the aftermath of this tragedy, my daughter and I have also battled to maintain the rest of our lives, working in spite of grief and trauma to keep a roof over our heads and to carry on as best we can,” Judith Hutchinson said in

Richmond Potters Club’s spring sale is on April 23 at the Richmond Cultural Centre. For sale are works by club members, including instructor David Lui, who is busy giving this vase a whale motif.
A police officer has been charged with stealing from the River Rock casino. Const. Nick Sharma, a member of the RCMP’s combined forces special enforcement unit, is alleged to have cashed in a $400 ticket left at a slot machine by another gambler. A charge of theft under $5,000 was approved last week by the Crown against Sharma, who was off-duty at the time of the incident. He is now set to appear in Richmond
Provincial Court on May 19 to face the allegation. An RCMP news release stated how, on Dec. 9, 2010, police were dispatched to a report of a theft at the River Rock. “It was alleged that a man took a $400 cash ticket, left behind by another patron in one of the machines, and cashed it out,” the release said. In addition to the criminal proceedings, the officer is also facing an RCMP internal investigation. “The member has been assigned to administrative duties pending the outcome of both investigations,” the release added.

‘Tough on crime’ feeds fears
W
hile both violent crime and crime in general continue to decline from year-to-year the public’s perception that there is more crime and more violent crime continues to grow. It’s understandable. The media, in general, plays up violent crime and downplays any news when things get better. So, it’s no wonder that Stephen Harper continues to count on ‘tough on crime’ sloganeering to gain support. After all, who wants to be seen to be pro-crime? We almost expected to see reruns of the infamous Willie Horton campaign ad featured in the U.S. presidential election of 1988. Political history buffs may recall Horton was a convicted murderer who raped a woman while out on furlough. Harper might have been tempted to use Allan Schoenborn as Canada’s Willie Horton. Schoenborn, who killed his three children in 2008, was set for escorted day passes before public outrage triggered a review. We suspect anyone promising to keep Schoenborn in his pyjamas for life would gain support. The Conservatives promise to increase sentences for those criminals we all detest: pedophiles, etc. They also promise to increase drug testing in prisons. In fact, the Conservatives are all about prisons in their platform, but there is little mention of increasing policing or even following recommendations from police organizations. The Conservatives will do away with the gun registry, contrary to police assertions that the registry helps save lives. But the Tories ignore that advice. Voters deserve more than platforms intended to appeal to their fears. — Burnaby Now editorial

Pipeline review not sufficient The Editor, Re: “Pipeline already under review,” Letters, April 20. Adrian Pollard writes that risks concerning the jet fuel pipeline were considered. The current process is a provincial review with federal components but not a full independent review under higher federal standards which would have provided funding to third party stakeholders, examined alternatives and conducted a full risk assessment of those alternatives. The federal environmental minister abdicated his duty by rolling the federal into the provincial process and allowing the provincial minister to make the final decision. The current environmental review process only looks at the project as it is presented. All of the potential alternatives for jet fuel delivery have not been reviewed. I am asking for a halt to the current process so that the other alternatives may be considered under federal standards with respect to human safety and the environment. The current review is not a risk assessment process. It has no capacity to examine alternatives. The recent events in Japan and the subsequent nuclear catastrophe highlight some of the reasons why we need to look at all options and all of the risks in a holistic way. The current proposal gives the corporation all the benefits. All the risks lie with the residents of Richmond. The role of an MP is to voice the concerns and champion the interests of the residents. The current member has not. I am advocating on behalf of the people of Richmond and am calling for a moratorium on the pipeline in order to look at all options for fuel delivery and the risks presented by each of those alternatives. Joe Peschisolido Richmond Federal Liberal candidate

Give me better reasons to vote As sure as spring brings skunk cabbage and the scent of freshly spread manure, a federal election brings the suggestion that we make voting mandatory. Don’t do it, politicians. The “Let’s just make everyone do it!” approach is thrown about as an answer to the (alleged) problem of declining voter turnout. That’s not to imply that voter turnout isn’t declining. It hit 58.8 per cent in the 2008 contest, after bouncing back and forth between the high 60s and mid-70s during the previous half century. But turnout has never been close to 100 per cent. In fact, it flirted with the low 60s in the 1890s, not far above recent levels. And the highest level ever was 79.4 per cent participation in the 1958 election. We have yet to crack 80 per cent participation in any election. The question should not be, “Should we make everyone vote?” but, “Why don’t people want to vote?” Let me try to answer that as someone who has serious doubts about voting this year. " The fear that my vote won’t matter. There are dozens of other ridings across Canada where putting up the lawn signs and holding debates is nothing more than a ritual

exercise, a game with a foregone conclusion. The election is a lock, and if you’re not a Conservative/ Liberal/NDPer/Bloquiste, tough cookies. Keep in mind that I have never, ever voted for a winning candidate at the federal or provincial level. If I was a hockey player who’d lost every game for 14 years, I’d have gotten the hint by now and hung up my skates. I’m aware that the flip side of saying your vote doesn’t matter is that, if enough people say that, it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. But 62 per cent? Come on. " The choices aren’t that great. I’m a firm believer in the hold-your-nose-andpick-the-least-offensivecandidate approach. I have strongly held opinions, but they don’t map onto the political landscape of any party. When I vote, I tend to vote against the parties and policies I really hate, rather than for one that speaks to me. " It’s not exactly a la carte politics. Believe it or not, this lefty, bleeding-heart
pinko agrees with the Conservatives from time to time. And there are Liberal policies that I find palatable, and NDP and Green ideas that send me into fits of frothing rage. But I can’t pick and choose from the policies of the parties. All I can do is make one vote, for one potential MP, who may or may not win, may or may not sit on the back benches, may or may not cave in and compromise the second Parliament convenes. " Negativity and personality. When policy does get mentioned in campaigns, it tends to be “X is a strong leader who can provide a stable economy,” or “X cares about families.” The last time I checked, strength of character was not enough to stave off a recession, and if I wanted a leader to care about me personally, I’d have friended him on Facebook already. The election machine is working overtime to try and convince me to vote for X, Y, or Z, but it’s forgotten to give me enough reasons to mark a ballot, period. So what would make me happier about voting? A better system, more participation, and other answers, in this space next week. Matthew Claxton is a reporter for the Langley Advance.

of foreign military aircraft. Thank you Mr. Diefenbaker, for selling off this country’s aviation industry over four decades ago, thus ensuring that we would be doing this for the rest of our lives. The war in Afghanistan is another area this government has seen fit to mismanage and we’re losing out military sons and daughters one after the other. If the government had put a nickel behind the fight from the beginning, we could have taken care of the Taliban for good and come home. As it is now, all we see are the black motorcades carrying the dead down the highway of heroes. Our economic sovereignty is also being chipped away at when century old companies like the “Hudson’s Bay Company” are allowed to be bought up by foreign interests and then closed a few years later or replaced by their own corporate stores. Boys and girls, can you say “WalMart” and “Target.” Mismanaging the West Coast fishery is yet another example of the government not caring, thereby making your average fisherman as poor as a church mouse, with his or her future slowly being eroded away. The bureaucrats in Ottawa know nothing of the fishing industry out here, but if they’d ask a fisherman their advice once in a while, they might learn something and get somewhere. Frankly, I feel we’d be better off without political parties, thereby having all members of Parliament and member of Parliament hopefuls running as independents. That way, once they got elected the only people they would be beholden to, would be the voters. The people who really matter: not some party or corporation who doesn’t give a damn. It’s time to vote for change, time to vote for the “candidate,” who will work for us, not the party. Gordon Kibble, A proud Canadian. Richmond

Earlier this week, reasons were released in McLellan v. McLellan and McLellan Estate. Carrie McLellan, one of 2 daughters of the late Hugh McLellan sought to vary his Will. Hugh died in 2005 with an Estate Worth $1.7 million. The bequest to Carrie was $15,000. In 1990 Hugh left the family, remarried and left Carrie to look after her Mother. It was a shock to all that he left. Carrie had no relationship with the new wife Raye. The Court found that a six year estrangement was largely Hugh's fault although a few years before he died their good relationship was restored. But the Court also found that Carrie was a good daughter and Hugh owed her a moral duty. She was given $250,000 by the Court. The decision was right in my view because Raye, the second wife, was not in need and Hugh owed Carrie a moral duty given what he did to his family.

The Editor, Oh Canada… Another election, just what we need. Frankly, I think the four federal leaders and their parties are all acting like children who can’t get along in the same sandbox. Thank God for Green Party leader Elizabeth May for stay on topic with the issues and not party posturing. The four leaders should take a page out of her handbook and do the same. They should be paying attention to the issues of the country and the citizens of the country, not party politics. All this party posturing does nothing for the country and its citizens. And we’re the ones who wind up losing because of it. It’s not a question of the Bloc Quebecois, the Conservatives, the Liberals or the New Democrats; it’s a question of the good of Canada as a country and the good of its citizens. Sovereignty is probably the biggest issue we face today, what with our northern neighbours constantly chipping away at our Arctic borders. And what does the government do, practically nothing. What they should have done in the beginning, was stated exactly where Canada’s border is and stated it in no uncertain terms. But no, all they did was to say that they will begin planning to build some arctic patrol vessels to try and protect our interests and Canadians up there. Those ships should have been in place years ago, for if they had been maybe we wouldn’t have this problem now. We can only hope that when these ships are built, that they are built in Canadian shipyards, by Canadian shipwrights, and not in foreign yards, where once again we will be beholding to someone else for our military defence. Where is our government to say that they “WILL” be built here in Canada? The B.C. Liberal government didn’t build at home with our two new ferries, and they should have. And it’s the same with the purchasing

The Editor, I’m 16 years old. I go to Matthew McNair secondary in Richmond. The reason I am writing to you today is because last year in Febuary, I was crossing the street on my way to school and at the same place I cross the street every day. The law is that when the light is flashing, cars are to stop at the line. Every day I see cars speed by the cross walk. On that day in February, I crossed the street when all the cars were stopped. When I got to the middle of the crosswalk a car decided that they were not going to wait and they tried to drive in front of me. By trying to drive, he hit my entire right side and ran over my right foot. I got off the road and the guy had pulled over. He got out of his green van and came over to me to see if I was okay. I said that I just needed to sit down; he went back to

There have been a lot of conversations and De letters to local papers Whalen lately about housing preferences for immigrant “expatriates” in Richmond. SOCIAL I believe the conversation started with an assertion that immigrants don’t want to call Canada their home, but will just buy a second home here and proceed to take advantage of our largess. But in my experience and friendships with immigrant women at the Richmond Women’s Resource Centre (RWRC), I find the vast majority of people who move to Richmond want to settle here and make a better life for themselves and their families. A better life certainly includes finding housing they can afford. The RWRC enjoys more than 4,700 visits yearly. Almost 90 per cent of the members are immigrant women,

mostly of Asian origin. Their first three priorities are to: find housing, learn English and find a job. I am more inclined to believe these women who say JUSTICE they want to make Richmond their home, than one writer who has a vague idea that most immigrants are rich expats. Considering these folks want to live in Richmond (the city with the highest cost of housing in Metro Vancouver), I have to admire their resilience and resourcefulness. Imagine coming to a new country and after securing a low-wage job not in line with your professional credentials, you find that half of your income has to go for rent. This is the case with thousands of our newcomers. Then they end up competing with long-time residents for the few rental

will help the 595 on the BC Housing list but completion of all of them is still far in the future. In addition, a huge barrier to developers and nonprofits wishing to build these types of units is the city is reluctant to provide relief on development cost charges. And for the majority of people who want to own but don’t have the annual income, the city needs to implement additional solutions that are tried and proven tools in other cities, such as shared equity models, exemption from development cost charges, non-profit partnerships and land trusts. Does all of this sound confusing? Yes, me too. That’s why many municipalities have created housing authorities or become partners in a housing society so that all these problems, tools and solutions can be discussed and agreed on by people who understand all this stuff. Richmond needs to create a community table that includes developers, funders, community agencies, planners, architects and visionaries so we can come up with solutions for affordable housing for the “middle sector.” It is a critical time in the development and growth of Richmond. Next time, I will write about the preservation and building of market housing and in the following article, an action plan the participants talked about at the close of the forum.

How does a community deal with this problem? The housing forum brought together many ideas and solutions that have been used successfully in other communities — over 60 in fact! They are well documented in research and practice in other jurisdictions. Participants were delighted to see some of these solutions already being employed by the City of Richmond. They are: housing trust funds; density bonusing; inclusionary zoning; secondary suites; infill development; standards of maintenance bylaws; parking exemptions; rent controls; demolition controls; housing agreements with non-profits and one-toone replacement of rental stock. But really, these all deal with rental housing, not affordable ownership. And they all depend on building new rental accommodation, something Richmond sorely needs. To this end, the City of Richmond recently approved (on paper) the construction of 73 subsidized social housing units (income less than $20,000), 240 low-end market rental units (between $20,000 to $37,700) and 244 low-end market ownership units (less than $60,000). Some of these builds

Continued from page 12 speakers from all over Metro Vancouver gave a standing room only crowd of participants a ton of information to absorb. Participants then discussed and discovered ideas and actions that just might work in Richmond. The keynote speaker, Tim Wake from Smart Growth BC, coined a phrase for households with incomes of $35,000 to $70,000 per year-they are the “middle sector” and they are the largest sector of the housing market. They earn too much for subsidized housing but not enough to get into the housing market. So it happens that we have a system for dealing with subsidized housing and for market housing but these people are the ones who fall between the cracks. As the average annual wage in Richmond is about $46,000, this brings up the question, should government intervene when market forces make it almost impossible for so many people to afford their own home? For households with children making $35,000 or less, they can qualify for a housing supplement through BC Housing (individuals don’t qualify). They can also apply for subsidized housing but in Richmond there are currently 595 applications on a wait list with the BC Housing Registry for subsidized housing.

Helps to activate naturally millions of stem cells from our own bone marrow. The increase in stem cells released from the bone marrow into the blood stream have the potential to become other types of tissue cells with specialized function. Stem cells will multiply and are able to become heart cells, liver cells or any other organ. Located everywhere in our body, stem cells are even under our skin layered between the epidermis and dermis. This is why an increase in stem cells under our skin may help to create a more youthful cell that would replenish elastin and collagen and thus may make us look younger. If our bone marrow does not produce enough stem cells this can result in many illnesses, especially a weak heart, kidneys, liver, pancreas, in fact all healthy functions of our body are decreased. Sufficient stem cells in our body have a great potential of self-repair and the ability to rejuvenate tissues. It does not contain live human stem cells as these can only be transplanted by surgery and are subject to immunosuppressant drugs to avoid graft rejection.Naturopathic Doctor summarized his experience in writing after using this Stem Cell Activator: Used for all organ and tissue damage, heart attack damage, osteo-arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, traumatic brain injury, muscular #63 dystrophy, Crohn’s disease, diabetes, lupus, spinal injuries, and other diseases and tissue damage. The results have been very satisfactory to us and to the patients and the time varies with different patients depending on the extremity of the damage.

Acidic Stomach & Acid Reflux
By Dr. C. Hammoud, PhD - Must help or money refunded If your stomach is excessively acidic it means all your cells in your body are acidic. By correcting the excessively acidic stomach you should not need anti-acid pills to control reflux (heartburn). All acidic cells are deprived of oxygen and are the breeding ground for many illnesses including weight gain, diabetes, stress, vascular diseases and cancer. This fact was discovered by Dr. Otto Warburg years ago and he received two Nobel Prizes. You can change your acidic cells in your body by eating 80% alkaline food (vegetables, legumes, fruit). Eat 20% acidic food (bread, noodles, rice, animal derived foods). Full details inside the box. If you don’t want to make major #39 changes in your diet, try Bell Acidic Stomach/Alkaline Balance #39 guaranteed to bring your body to a pH alkaline balance. Free pH test kit inside the box. Dr. C. Everett Koop M.D. states that 68% of all illnesses and deaths are due to the wrong food and the quantity we eat. Unfortunately, virtually nothing about nutrition or natural health products is taught in medical school say many prominent medical doctors in print and on TV including the well known Dr. Andrew Weil M.D. Go on the internet and inform yourself.

The Human Trainer helps company go global BY ALAN CAMPBELL
acampbell@richmond-news.com
From starting out in a garage to having distribution offices in seven countries, Astone Fitness has come a long way in the last few years. In fact, such has been the popularity for products from the portable fitness equipment company — started by three Richmond guys in their homes and now based in the Bridgeport area — that they’re struggling to keep up with demand. In the last business quarter, Astone recorded a massive 580 per cent sales increase from the same time a year ago. The reason for the surge? A new home workout or “suspension gym” product called The Human Trainer, launched six months ago and that Atone co-founder Ben Silverman says has their opposition trembling with fear. “The demand has been overwhelming,” said Silverman, 30, a Palmer secondary graduate. “We can’t keep up right now and we know our competitors are getting worried because we can hear what they’re saying at trade shows and we have gotten letters from them. “All I’ll say is that they are a very litigious company. “They got their product onto the market before us, but we have a much longer-term strategy.” The Human Trainer’s basic principle
involves inelastic straps anchored above you. The user holds onto (or connects via the feet) the trainer and performs exercises, targeting every muscle group in the body. By changing the angle of your body, the user controls the amount of his/ her own bodyweight being lifted, according to Astone. “However, because the user controls the angle of his/her body, it is also extremely easy for beginners and can even be used just for stretching,” Silverman added. Silverman started the company back in 2003, before bringing in personal fitness expert Darren Shane, 34, a McNair secondary grad and Internet whiz Joel Grenz, 32, originally from Germany. And the fact that they’re all from diverse backgrounds is no accident. In fact, it makes perfect business sense, according to Silverman. “I started the company and then I found Darren because I needed someone from a personal training background to help me and then I brought in Joe, because he’s the Internet expert,” he said. “The fact that they all have something different to offer is definitely by design, not by chance. “We’ve been quite successful in that time, we had an infomercial for the Ripcords and we got an endorsement from K1 kickboxing champion Michael McDonald. see Demand page 16

Demand: Has grown steadily Continued from page 15 “I guess we’ve had steady growth since the days of working from our homes and from my mom’s garage.” Silverman said that they’ve invested a lot of time and money on The Human Trainer in the hope it takes their business onto another level. “You could say it’s been a big gamble; but it’s one that we’re very confident with, as our market research said it made sense,” he said. “We even got feedback from people in the gym chain business that it was even better than the non-portable equipment, which is a strong statement.”
Astone has grown more than 100 per cent every year for the past four years, Silverman said. “We now have offices or distribution outlets in Vancouver, Toronto, Israel, Australia, Nevada and the U.K.,” added Silverman. “People from all over the world are wanting this product. “At the beginning, our sales guy had to do cold-calling, now the market is calling us.” To cope with the demand, Astone are in the process of bringing in more specialized personnel to help with social media and sales.

Battling the Bulge By Andrea Holwegner
Here are some things you need to know: Shrink your portions Are you eating the same now as you were 10 years ago yet are frustrated that a few unwanted pounds creep on each year? As Albert Einstein suggested, insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. Katrina had never stopped to think about the fact she was packing the same lunch to work and eating the same portion sizes at supper for many years. She was able to decrease her calorie intake and lose weight without feeling substantially hungrier by skipping the granola bar or cookies she had packed in her lunch for years. She also made sure she had two different types of vegetables on her plate and smaller portions of meat and starchy foods at supper. Rather than completely changing your nutrition habits and meals, think about shrinking down your portions slightly or tweaking your
meals and snacks just a bit to lower calories. Small daily calorie deficits can lead to big weight changes over time. Burn baby burn If the thought of eating less was particularly unappealing to you, then your other option to curb weight gain as you age is to boost your physical activity to burn more calories. This might mean changing your physical activity pattern, increasing the time you spend exercising or alternatively increasing the intensity at which you exercise. Katrina thought it would be difficult to squeeze more time into her busy schedule to add more exercise. She also really enjoyed her dog walks as an unwinding ritual from work. Instead of a leisurely stroll, she decided to pick up the pace and get her heart rate pumping and cover more ground. She also mixed up her daily routine by sometimes adding hills and running to bolster the intensity. This allowed her to burn more calories in the same amount of time.
your wise guide to healthy living in richmond
Katrina was a 42-year-old accountant and mother of two who contacted me for help to lose her “muffin-top” (the extra weight she was carrying around her mid-section). She was frustrated that the nutrition and exercise patterns she’d followed in her 20s and 30s were no longer providing her with the lean physique she wanted. Katrina ate healthy foods most of the time, rarely ate out and walked her dog daily for exercise. She wondered why she seemed to gain a few pounds per year despite maintaining a healthy lifestyle. You typically need fewer calories as you grow older, since your metabolism or the rate that you burn calories typically declines with age. The trouble is most people don’t increase their physical activity or eat less to compensate for this. The good news is that with a bit of awareness you can ward off the battle of the bulge as you age.

Although weight training was not appealing to Katrina, you may consider adding this to your physical activity plan since it can increase muscle mass. Building muscle is the best way to curb an age-related decline in metabolism.
Without getting these things in check, managing a healthy weight is very difficult. Katrina was really surprised that getting a good night’s rest was just as important as getting enough exercise. How are you doing with these?
Beyond food and exercise Although the diet industry would have you believe that you should be able to lose weight by nutrition and exercise alone, be aware there are other factors that influence your weight.
Reshape your ideals Despite excellent health and trimming her muffin-top, Katrina was still disappointed she could not seem to reshape her body to what it looked like when she was in her 20s and 30s.
Your weight is not explained by simply “calories in” versus “calories out.
Realize that with age your body composition often changes to favour more fat mass and less muscle mass.
Other factors such as genetics, family history, hormone changes, medical concerns, sleep habits and stress level also influence your body weight. Some of these factors you have no control over, while others you can do something about. Check with your doctor regularly if you have experienced unexplainable changes in your weight. Did you know that constant, high levels of stress and limited sleep often make weight loss very difficult? In my nutrition consulting practice, I have been amazed how many people I have seen over the years that are chronically stressed and survive on very little sleep or have untreated sleep apnea.
Remember that the body shape of a woman or a man in their 40s and beyond is not supposed to be that of a teenager or someone in their 20s. Be realistic about what healthy looks like at your current age. Find healthy role models in your own age bracket instead of comparing yourself to someone who is younger or outside of the typical norm. Some of the skinniest people I know have horrible health. Some of the rounder men and curvier women I know have outstanding health. Be reasonable. Reshape your ideals to be your best at this age.

More than one way to get your vitamin D JESSICA KERR
production.
In recent years, vitamin D and its health benefits have been getting more and more attention.
According to the Joint Canadian Tanning Association, three million Canadians turn to indoor tanning studios every year.
Doctors and researchers say getting adequate vitamin D levels can help prevent, and in some cases reverse, major illnesses.
Many groups, including the World Health Organization, have warned there are associated dangers — namely developing skin cancer — with both excessive sun exposure and using a tanning bed.
It’s now known that getting enough vitamin D may help ward off many cancers, osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis. It is an immune system regulator and getting enough vitamin D may even help keep the common cold at bay, as well as have a key role in keeping the brain functioning well as you age.
Closer to home, Greater Victoria implemented a bylaw restricting the use of tanning salons to people 18 or older. The Joint Canadian Tanning Association, however, maintains there is a safe way to tan.
Vitamin D can be ingested by eating certain foods - some fish, eggs and mushroom irradiated with UV, or fortified food products such as milk and orange juice - or by taking supplements.
“Moderate tanning for individuals who can develop tans is the best way to maximize the benefits of regular UV exposure while minimizing the risks associated with either too much or too little sunlight,” the association states in its brochure. The association states sunburn prevention is key in safe tanning. The Canadian Cancer Society recommends Canadians get 1,000 international units of vitamin D daily. Holmes says for many skin types, 10 minutes in a tanning bed will produce 10,000 IU of vitamin D. He says a person cannot overdose on UV activated vitamin D.

However, the body also naturally produces vitamin D when the skin is exposed to UVB light either through sun exposure or in a tanning bed.
YOGA
In a northern country like Canada, it can be hard to get enough vitamin D naturally from the sun during winter months when the days are shorter and the sun is less intense than in summer.

Embrace the Spirit
Hatha Yoga is one of the most commonly practiced styles of yoga in the western world. Through practice, yoga can create union in the mind, body and spirit, balance in the body, and gain physical and mental benefits.
A Statistics Canada survey last year found two-thirds of Canadians have vitamin D levels below the amounts researchers say is needed to reduce the risk of chronic diseases. John Holmes, who owns Lower Mainland tanning salon Hawaiian Beach, says that responsible use of tanning beds is an effective way to stimulate the body’s natural vitamin D

Rivals trail in McComb’s wake BY MICHELLE HOPKINS
mhopkins@richmond-news.com
Mike McComb couldn’t know that walking into a snowboarding shop years ago would change his life. “I went to The Boardroom in Kits and I saw this wakeboard,” said the owner of Richmond Centre’s Iris Optical. “I didn’t know anyone who owned a boat and yet I bought one on the spot.” The avid snowboarder was intrigued by the idea of boarding on water. In 1991, McComb took his board to the beach to see if he could find a friendly boater willing to pull him and when he did, he was instantly hooked. Then, when he met a competitive water skier, he took his interest in the sport to a whole new level. “He invited me out and we went to a water ski conference,” McComb said. “At the meeting, I said that I wanted to organize the wakeboard sport in Canada.” Today, the 45-year-old judges competitions all over
the world. For his tireless work in bringing the sport to international fame here in Canada, this August, McComb will be inducted into the Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame. McComb will be in good company, notable inductees include hockey great Wayne Gretzky and former CFL star Lui Passaglia. “It is quite an honour and I feel humbled,” he said. “Today, wake boarding is one of the fastest growing water sports in North America.” McComb was also instrumental in establishing Canadian wakeboarding rules and regulations during competitions. “We hosted the first tournament in 1994 in Campbell River,” he said. “We had 18 local guys compete … this was the very beginning of the sport here in Canada.” For the past seven years, he has been the vicepresident of The World Wakeboard Association. “We currently have two Canadians to really

He won the World Champion Wake Boarder in 2010. We actually have quite a few pro riders here in B.C.” When he is a judging, McComb said there are three criteria in which he assessed competitors: style, intensity and composition. “We look at their execution and level of difficulty, how much risk they take and the flow and fluidity of
their tricks,” McComb said. One of the pioneer professional competitors, McComb said, was Richmond’s Jeff Heer. The 36-year-old was the first Canadian pro rider and he was very successful on the U.S. circuit. In 2009, Heer was inducted into Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame. For those who love the sport, the 2011 Canadian Wakeboard Championships will be held in Kamloops Aug. 26 to 28.

911 AWARDS
A night to honour courage, dedication PHOTO SUBMITTED
Five members of Richmond’s RCMP detachment are nominated at the ninth annual 911 Awards for being part of Alexa’s Team, which is dedicated to investigating and putting forward drunk driving charges. Cpl. Paul Hayes (far left) spent many hours mentoring and training constables Adam Carmichael, (from left), Andrew Whitway, Ed Bastien and Thomas Boyce as part of the team.
BY MICHELLE HOPKINS
mhopkins@richmond-news.com
As a father of young girls himself, Richmond RCMP Cpl. Paul Hayes couldn’t help but be moved and terribly saddened by the tragic death of little Alexa Middelaer by a drunk driver. To honour the four-year-old’s senseless death, her parents Laurel and Michael Middelaer, initiated the Alexa’s Team in 2010. To become a member of Alexa’s Team, police officers from across the Lower Mainland must investigate and put forward at least 10 Criminal Code impairment driving charges. Last year, after a few years on Air One patrol, Hayes, a Richmond
resident, was transferred to the Richmond RCMP detachment. Right away, the veteran police officer decided to motivate and inspire his team of 20 constables to become members of Alexa’s Team. “As a police officer with both Air One and traffic control, I had seen the results of drinking and driving and I’ve dealt with a lot of the after effects,” said Hayes. “I wanted to improve my members impaired testing skills, so they could submit more charges to Crown Counsel. “At the time, there were no Richmond officers taking part in the program.” For the countless hours Hayes spent training and mentoring his officers, the corporal, as well as
four of his members who made it onto Alexa’s Team — constables Ed Bastien, Thomas Boyce, Adam Carmichael and Andrew Whiteway — are nominees in the upcoming Richmond Chamber of Commerce’s ninth annual 911 Awards. “The four members will also be receiving a certificate from Alexa’s parents to congratulate them on making the list,” Hayes said proudly. “They have worked extremely hard and I was thrilled to hear that they were nominated.” Hayes said he’s having so much fun mentoring the guys that he is “humbled by his nomination as well.” Since their training, a vast majority of their impaired driving
charges have been accepted by B.C. Crown counsel. Hayes also credits Const. Jason Parker. Without his help, he said, his members would have not made it on Alexa’s Team. “We only have one breathalyzer constable who is qualified to conduct the tests and he did the lion’s share,” said Hayes. “Without Jason, our guys wouldn’t have achieved their goal … it took a whole group for these four guys to get there. “So kudos go out to my whole team of 20 who played an invaluable role is seeing Ed, Thomas, Adam and Andrew make it on Alexa’s Team.” On Wednesday, April 27, come and join the RCC as they celebrate the courageous men and women
of the city’s emergency personnel, who work hard every day to make sure the city is safe. During the awards ceremony, glasses will be raised in salute to members of the RCMP, Richmond Fire-Rescue, Canadian Coast Guard and B.C. Ambulance/ Paramedics at the River Rock Casino Resort. Tickets for the 911 Awards are $105 or $1,050 for a table of 10. The reception starts at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m. The MC for the evening is Jack McGee, president and CEO of the Justice Institute of B.C. For more information or to purchase tickets, call 604-278-2822 or go to www. richmondchamber.ca. see Awards page 25

First of all, let me say that I respect the other candidates running in this election, even though I disagree with many of their positions; I know well the sacrifice and hard work that goes into an election campaign, and I simply don’t want to arrogantly suggest that I am “better” than them. Rather, I would ask you to consider voting for me because I attempt to be an honest, effective, and empathetic advocate for the people whom I have been elected to serve. I believe that my record – while not perfect – supports this conclusion. I also believe that the Conservative Party is best-suited to address the needs of Canadians and my re-election as an MP strengthens the national government. The final reason I want to put forward is
that while you and I may not be in complete accord … I am willing to consider positions at variance with my own when ultimately deciding how to vote in Parliament; and I am not afraid to take “risky” positions on matters of principle. Naturally, I hope that he votes for me; but if he doesn’t and I’m fortunate enough to be re-elected on May 2nd, I want him to know that I appreciate the fact he gave me the opportunity to answer his question. And my door will be wide open to him - just like it has been for all constituents of Richmond during my tenure as Member of Parliament. Richmond participants finish strong beach grove golf club at 27th annual Vancouver Sun Run trial Membership Christine Blanchette A RUNNER'S MIND
This past Sunday, thousands of runners and walkers lined up the streets in downtown to participate in the 27th Annual Vancouver Sun Run — the largest 10k road race in Canada. This year 49,365 participated in the popular community event which attracts both competitive and not so serious runners. Ontario’s Eric Gillis won the race in 29.06 minutes, marking the first-time a Canadian has prevailed in 13 years. On the women’s Toronto’s Lucy Njeri took
top honours with a time of 33.01. There was also some excellent results by Richmond runners. Rachel Ruus finished first in the women’s 35-39 age division with an impressive time of 36.10. Melissa Roach ran a 41.37 to give her third in the U16 division. In the 45-49 age category, Catharina Ingham ran 45.35. Rounding out the women’s results was Doreen Clarke (1:16.18) finishing third in the 80-84 division. Brandon Jones made the top 100 list in a competitive time of 34.29 In the male under 16 category, Ben Koonar ran (40.09). Mohammed Razak came second in his 55-59 age division (36.33). Steve Hosford placed third (41.02) in his
60-64 category. In the 65-69 age group, Aristidi Georgiopoulos ran 46.22 and in the 75-79, Lorne O’Connor (53.42) and Bernard Lotzkar (58.42) were among the top finishers. Now that the Sun Run is over and all that training is under your belt, why not set another goal by participating in the BMO 8k run on May 1? There are also several upcoming road races. TRUTH IN ''EMPLOYMENT'' ADVERTISING Postmedia Community Publishing makes every effort to ensure you are responding to a reputable and legitimate job opportunity. If you suspect that an ad to which you have responded is misleading, here are some hints to remember. Legitimate employers do not ask for money as part of the application process; do not send money; do not give any credit card information; or call a 900 number in order to respond to an employment ad. Job opportunity ads are salary based and do not require an investment. If you have responded to an ad which you believe to be misleading please call the Better Business Bureau at 604-682-2711, Monday to Friday, 9am - 3pm or email inquiries@bbbvan.org and they will investigate.

Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections Cancer June 21-July 22: Your future looks bright! Optimism, new hopes, friends, wishes, entertainment and light romance come waltzing in. You’ll enjoy the weeks ahead – even more so because your position in the world is on the rise, your ambitions meet luck. Recent warnings about not starting anything new are now over. Sunday to Tuesday feature changes, big finances, commitments, sexual urges, lifestyle changes and health diagnosis, all productively. A partner or competitor isn’t thrilled with you, though, so proceed cautiously – all week. Gentle love might point to the right mate for you midweek! Leo July 23-Aug. 22: The emphasis for the next few weeks will be on ambition, prestige relationships, your status in the world. All looks fairly smooth here, no big highs nor deep lows. Meanwhile, your expansion (usually lucky) in love, legal, intellectual, international and cultural zones continues, especially Friday/Saturday – but work or health demands, or your caution, can interfere. Recent delays end, so charge ahead with new ideas, relationships and projects, especially Sunday to Tuesday, when exciting meetings and prospects arise! Research, financial and sexual commitments are favoured midweek. Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: A mellow, understanding vibe fills the weeks ahead. This promotes gentle love, far travel, intellectual pursuits, legal and cultural affairs, education and publishing. Recent delays dissolve; you no longer need to avoid new projects. Tackle chores Sunday to Tuesday – everything runs smoothly. One caution: the first half of this week might cause a barrier in income zones, or a conflict between sexual desire and ethics. This continues more softly, “workably” the last half. You face different relationships now to 2025, in love, business, with the public – think “enchanted.”

Aries March 21 - April 19: Delays end. You can charge ahead on new fronts. You’ve already entered a brand new world – it is sleek, clear, alive, even nervous, and within this new world, friends, ideas, inventiveness and fun are more important than money. You’re going to have fun Sunday to Tuesday – and for eight years! Your freedom is growing. The shy, quiet, dreamy and elusive friends of the past decade fall away, to be replaced by bright, sharp-minded types. This week, this “peeling off” causes a relationship disappointment. For the month ahead, chase money, seek higher earnings, cultivate new clients. Taurus April 20-May 20: Your energy, charisma and effectiveness rise strongly! The delays of April have ended. Start new projects, see and be seen, tackle chores that previously intimidated you. Despite this surge of energy, one part of you remains contemplative, and is tied in to private matters, quiet planning sessions, government liaisons, etc. Your real “break out” will come in June, when a year of huge luck will commence! Meanwhile, be ambitious Sunday/Monday – luck is with you. Watch legal, ethical factors all week. Change is needed here. Happiness midweek! Retreat, rest Friday/Saturday. Gemini May 21-June 20: Recent delays end, but indecision continues unless you make choices based on gentle love, foreign travel/contacts, culture and intellectual pursuits, which all draw you nicely Sunday to Tuesday. The weeks ahead emphasize rest, contemplation, solitude. Retreat, plan, prepare and fulfil obligations. Contact government agencies, institutions, charitable organizations. Your spiritual side grows – and might become, June onward, a significant relationship factor. If your hopes about a special person are disappointed, alter love goals. Be ambitious Wednesday. “Half happiness” late week.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: A month of mystery, depths, investment, financial manoeuvres, intimacy, commitment, lifestyle changes, health diagnosis and detective work lies ahead. Your life might change. You’re in a powerful and unpredictable relationship trend. So far (early 2011) this might have been more talk than action, but this week and May could cement you in the age-old way. Don’t expect smooth sailing for eight years – but do expect excitement! Whatever occurs this month could “return” in a hugely lucky way June 2011-June 2012. Romance, Sunday-Tuesday. But you must change! “Security” sabotages. Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: The weeks ahead emphasize relationships and opportunities. Be diplomatic, eager and willing. Don’t stubbornly cling to an outmoded position, especially at work or in health areas. Recent delays and indecisiveness end – charge ahead, especially on work and machinery fronts. A co-worker might oppose you, although the opposition’s subtle, might exist “between the lines” in a conversation or email, etc. You’ll win such a struggle, but might lose a friend: i.e., win the battle, lose the war. Be forgiving! Home, rest are both sweet Sunday to Tuesday. Romance, beauty call midweek. Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: You’re in the midst of a lucky, pleasure-filled, scholastic, romantic, creative surge! (January to June.) But the four weeks ahead emphasize work, health, machinery, duties and dependents. Ah, well – it will run smoothly, anyway. (Except, perhaps, for a wee struggle around midweek when life dictates that you must choose between love and money – with money exercising the most influence. This, of course, steers you back toward work.) Recent delays and indecision pass now. Travel, errands and paperwork fill SundayTuesday. Home, midweek. Romance late week – sober, then strong!

Apr. 24 - April 30 Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: Recent delays end. Charge forward with new ventures, relationships and situations. The weeks ahead emphasize romance, speculation, risks, good luck, children, beauty, creativity, pleasure and sports – you’ll ride a winning streak! You face a choice now: on one side are your ambition, your natural personality; on the other lies love. If the love is in your home, you become protective, nurturing. If the love is “outside,” you might unconsciously press it, to end it. Chase money Sunday-Tuesday. Casual friends, talk, travel midweek. Home, security Friday/Saturday – buy it! Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: The weeks ahead accent security, domesticity, rest (hibernation) gardening, nutrition, soul, stomach, Mother Nature. Look over your retirement fund/plans, protect your children and their future, repair the house, etc. And settle back every once in a while to observe what you’re doing – present interests and inclinations hold a clue to where the riches lie in a very lucky period on the horizon – June 2011 to June 2012. That time might bring a new, better home, the end of an oppressive situation, a child, good things! Your energy and charisma rise nicely Sunday to Tuesday. Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: Delays end – so do mistakes, and wrong-headed money decisions. If needed, correct, alter course now. If you need a guide, look at your long-term future, envision it, where you want to be, and reconsider, alter money directions to suit that future. This works best midweek. The Thursday-Saturday period emphasizes a slightly different money trend: your earnings versus your net worth, debts, ability to “grow.” (E.g., do I work for wages or start a business?) You might start something that will grow big in money areas! Retreat early week. Your energy, charisma soar midweek. timstephens@shaw.ca • Reading: 416-686-5014

Ford’s Edge SUV is a fun ride with amazing attributes and characters.

BY DAVID CHAO
Special to the News
Four short years ago, Ford raised the bar on crossover SUVs when it introduced the Edge, a midsize crossover SUV that successfully married cool with convenient. The Edge was an instant hit, appealing to a wide demographic and announcing Ford’s return to prominence in the passenger-car market. You can imagine, then, that the expectations for the redesigned, 2011 Edge would be very, very high — and you’d be right. So, here’s the good news: as a vehicle, the award-winning, second-generation Edge is excellent. It looks even better than the original, both inside and out, and provides all the interior space and cargo room you’d expect. Pick up the top-end Sport model, and you’ll also get a stiffer suspension and 22-inch wheels, along with a host of high-tech features. Unfortunately, while the top-level Sport is a ton of fun to drive, its many features are a bit overwhelming. Ford bills its new SYNC with MyFord Touch system as a major innovation, combining the highly effective voice controls of SYNC with a touch-based control setup. MyFord Touch integrates vehicle systems with a large, dash-mounted LCD and two smaller screens flanking the speedometer, both connected to individual thumb-pads on the steering wheel. It sounds like a great idea, enabling drivers to keep their hands on the wheel at all times, but Ford has perhaps provided too many menus and choices. As a result, MyFord Touch proves far more distracting than it should be. The Edge Sport also comes with an upgraded
Sony audio system that replaces the physical stereo and climate-control buttons with touch-sensitive panels. The system sounds first class, but the reality is that touch panels are impossible to find without looking away from the road, turning quick glances into longer looks at the dashboard, and can be difficult to operate with gloves or long fingernails. Physical buttons aren’t nearly as cool, but you can find them on the dashboard without looking, and you know when you’ve pressed them. For the second-generation Edge Sport version to be truly successful, its Lincoln-derived, iPod-like touch panel system needs to be improved. Otherwise, the Edge itself is top-of-the-class vehicle with amazing attributes and characters.
Design
The 2011 Edge is a beautiful vehicle, and a strong follow-up to what was already a very attractive crossover. The proportions haven’t changed much, but the lines are smoother and bolder, in keeping with recent Ford design work. The Sport gains a few tweaks, the most noticeable of which is the blacked-out front grille. If you believe in the importance of small details, take an up-close look at the projector-style headlamps, which feature clear Edge nameplates suspended behind the lenses. The plates don’t impact the lighting at all (and won’t project the name onto your garage door), but are a nice little addition. Twenty two-inch wheels look gigantic on most vehicles, but not so with the Edge Sport. The styling is so good that the vehicle can see Handling page 33

WE REALLY TAKE CARE OF YOUR CAR
Handling: Stiffer, better
Performance
Most Edges feature a 3.5L V-6 with 285-h.p. and 253 lb.-ft. of torque, but the Sport gets a 3.7 L V-6 with 305-h.p. and 280 lb.-ft. of torque that’s borrowed from the Mustang, along with a fluid six-speed automatic transmission and paddle shifters that are surprisingly responsive. Where handling is concerned, the Edge Sport puts its stiffer suspension to good use. It feels like a performance vehicle, with great stability, lots of grip, and handling that belies the vehicle’s size. You wouldn’t confuse it with a sports car, but the Sport is far more aggressive and fun to drive than your average mid-size SUV. Steering is solid and direct, with understeer that’s
about average for the crossover segment. However, the all-wheel drive and traction control don’t provide as much confidence as more advanced systems in harsh weather conditions. Performance-wise, the only question is whether the Sport’s large V-6 is really necessary. The base Edge’s 3.5 L block is more than adequate, and the minimal power and torque gains attributed to the 3.7 L don’t justify the corresponding increase in fuel consumption.
It can be suppressed by closing the automatic sunshade, but that somewhat defeats the purpose.
Features
The Edge Sport sells for $43,499 with all-wheel drive, and comes loaded with standard features such as ABS, traction control, stability control, autosee Styling page 34

Continued from page 32 happily accept any of the 17-, 18-, or 22-inch wheels available for the various models. The interior is as welldone as the exterior, with a tiered dashboard that flows into the centre console. Instead of a hard-plastic shell, the top of the dashboard is padded to create a softer finish that’s more inviting. And ergonomics aside, the touch panels look nifty. From the plastics and leather surfaces to the small panel gaps and generally excellent workmanship, there’s a feeling of great quality throughout the Edge’s cabin that lends to the crossover’s upscale feel.

Environment
There’s ample passenger space in both the front and rear, along with auto-folding rear seats that make it easy to extend the large cargo area. The cupholders and storage bin in the centre console are underwhelming, but sizable map pockets and a decent glove box make up for it. The touch-sensitive button for the hazard lights is located in an unfortunate spot immediately below the main LCD screen. As a result, when pressing the Home icon at the bottommiddle of the screen, it’s easy to turn on the hazards. Putting controls aside, the overall integration of the Edge’s systems is impressive. However, there’s a noticeable lag in responsiveness when the vehicle is first started up in cold weather, which lasts until the hardware has warmed up. Wind noise is very noticeable through the optional panoramic sunroof.

Optional items on the Sport include a power moonroof, remote starter, entertainment system, GPS navigation, rainsensing wipers, and blind-spot sensors. However, you have to go to the Limited model to get distance-pacing cruise control, Xenon headlamps, and — oddly enough — garage-door transmitters. Fuel economy for the Edge Sport is rated at 12.2 L/100 km in the city and 8.8 L/100 km on the highway.

The Winner of the 2011 BC Junior Talent Search will receive a professional demo recording from Danielsen Studios and Sonic Voodoo Productions, cash prizes sponsored by the Vaudevillians and the opportunity to perform at some of the City of Surrey’s biggest family events as well as other great prizes!
An impressive and innovative vehicle that takes the innovation to the extreme.
Competitors Acura RDX
$40,490 is the price for the RDX, which features a turbocharged 2.3L inline-four putting out 240-hp and 260 lb-ft of torque, a five-speed automatic, and Acura’s exceptional Super-Handling All-Wheel Drive system. The RDX doesn’t offer as much cargo capacity as the larger Edge Sport, but is one of the most nimble SUVs you can get. Mazda CX-7 The fully loaded CX-7 GT sells for $36,690, equipped with a turbocharged 2.3L inline-four with 244-hp and 258 lbft of torque, a six-speed automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive. Mazda has fashioned a reputation as the sportiest of automakers, and the fouryear-old CX-7 is true to form. However, some may find it a bit to high-strung for their tastes, especially with the turbocharged four-cylinder. Nissan Murano For $44,048, the Sharp-looking Murano LE comes with a 3.5 L V-6 generating 260-hp and 240 lb.-ft. of torque, routed to the all-wheel-drive system through a super-smooth continuously variable transmission. With three different models, Nissan offers more variety than any other manufacturer in the mid-size SUV market. The Murano is the sportiest of them, with the Xterra proving the most rugged and the Pathfinder the most user-friendly.
