DESPERATELY SEEKING DONA Easter deserves better ViewPoint

usy weekend for celebrations here in Surrey, what with Good Friday, Vaisahki, Earth Day and Easter. When I think of the huge parade being held to celebrate the Sikh religious festival of Vaisakhi on Saturday, I lament the absence of any cohesive public celebration of Easter in this country. Don’t get me wrong – it’s not just because I’m Christian, I want a balloon. But who could deny that Easter celebrations here are quite lame? The spiritual vacuum this lameness has created has sadly invited such things as Easter bone hunts for pet dogs. Really, is there any other major world religion other than Christianity that would not consider this an affront, if not blasphemy? Christians believe that roughly 2,000 years ago Jesus Christ took on the sins of the world by suffering and dying on a wooden cross and then rose from the dead, thereby bridging the gap between us sinners and God. No small deed, that. So you’d think Christians might display some public cheer at such an accomplishment?

SURREY – The Phantom Candidate strikes again. Conservative incumbent, Dona Cadman, (Surrey North) was a noshow at an all-candidates debate hosted by the Downtown Surrey BIA Wednesday night. BIA staff confirmed Cadman’s absence and said a campaign worker called to say there was a scheduling conflict. Cadman, the worker said, was double booked. See OUR VIEW, page 14 See LETTERS, page 15 Cadman was attacked by the NDP who said this was just the latest in a series of no-shows. Cadman, they said, has ducked debates, newspaper and TV interviews all through the election campaign. Jasbir Sandhu is Cadman’s NDP opponent in Surrey North. He was at the BIA forum Wednesday. “This was an important debate. Most of Surrey’s economic activity is in the downtown area,” Sandhu said.
