Sunday market has new ‘upscale’ vision
Event raises $40K in Laura’s memory

DELTA – Sunday’s Walk, Run and Roll event in memory of Laura Szendrei went so well, they’re planning to do it again. Local realtor Brian White, who spearheaded the five- and 10-kilometre walk, said it will become an annual event. “We’ve committed that to the family,” he said. White said the event was held largely because local youth wanted it as “part of the healing process.” The 15-year-old Burnsview Secondary student died in hospital a day after she was viciously beaten in broad daylight while walking along a path in the Mackie Park forest, in the 8200-block of 110th Street in North Delta this past September.
SURREY – An upscale farmers’ market modeled on Granville Island Public Market is set to open in Cloverdale in June. Shannon Claypool, president of the Cloverdale Rodeo and Exhibition Association, said staff and the board of directors is working with the City of Surrey to create a completely new vision for the Cloverdale Fairgrounds, one that doesn’t include the flea market. The new concept for the area includes fresh fruits and veggie stands, baked goods, and artisans selling their handcrafted pottery, paintings, jewelry and other crafts. “We want an upscale farmers’ market/public market. We want a Sunday morning destination for people,” Claypool said. Claypool said organizers are aiming for a Granville Island style experience on a “one-day-a-week scale” mixed with some new ideas. The new market, dubbed the Cloverdale Weekend Market until an official name is chosen, is slated to open June 5. Some vendors will be able to set up in Shannon Hall and the Alice McKay building and others will be under pop-up tents scattered on the grounds.

❚ NEWS ❚CRIME/David Dutiaume released from jail after raping 84-year-old Surrey woman
Police warn Abby residents about Surrey rapist ABBOTSFORD – Abbotsford police are warning people in that city about a Surrey sex offender who posed as a charity worker and raped an elderly woman in Whalley in 2002. David Anthony Dutiaume, 24, has said he is planning to reside in Abbotsford when he is released from prison today (Tuesday), said Const. Ian MacDonald. As a result, the public warning and other steps have been taken to ensure public safety, MacDonald said. Dutiaume has finished a six-year jail sentence for the rape of a Surrey senior. When he was 15 years old, Dutiaume, posing as a donations collector for Unicef, forced his way into a Whalley home on
June 29, 2002 and raped an 84-year-old woman. The court heard he put a pillow over her face and punched her repeatedly while forcing himself on her, saying, “All I want is sex.” The victim’s daughter arrived in DAVID DUTIAUME time to see him running out the door with her mom’s purse. The Crown prosecutor applied to have the youth sentenced as an adult and argued for a six-year prison term. The max-
imum sentence for an adult for this crime is 14 years, but under the Youth Criminal Justice Act the maximum is two years, with a third of that served in the community. Dutiaume, formerly from Langley, agreed with the Crown during his trial in April 2005 that he should be treated as an adult and do federal time. The teenager, 18, pleaded guilty in light of DNA evidence to sexual assault causing bodily harm two days into the trial. Judge Bill Stewart called it a “very sad and tragic” case and noted the victim sustained more than 21 injuries. Stewart found Dutiaume’s apology “insincere” and described him as a “very troubled” and “profoundly flawed and dys-
functional young man” who’s considered a “very high risk” to reoffend. Dutiaume, described as five feet seven inches tall with brown hair and green eyes and weighing 186 pounds, is prohibited from consuming any illegal drugs or alcohol and can’t possess any weapons. Police are going to be vigilant, said MacDonald. “We are well aware of him. We’ve placed him under conditions and it is our responsibility to make sure he is not a public safety risk while in our community.” If anyone sees Dutiaume violating his conditions, they should contact Abbotsford police immediately at 604-859-5225. – Rochelle Baker and Tom Zytaruk

❚CLOVERDALE
Sunday flea market a casualty of Cloverdale’s urban vision continued from page 1 The change spells the end of the Cloverdale flea market, which has been a Sunday fixture at the site for about 30 years. Although existing flea market vendors will get a chance to upgrade their wares and stay, there will be no more “used merchandise and cellphone covers” for sale.
“I don’t want it to be a flea market anymore,” Claypool said. The impetus for the changes comes from the city and new blood at the Cloverdale Rodeo and Exhibition Association. They also reflect the changing demographics of the city, which is seeing a lot of younger families moving in as well as residents who demand more of an urban flair. Claypool said the new market will help
to revitalize the town and believes the coming changes for the fairgrounds – with the market being just one of many in the works – are long overdue. “We’ve become stagnant and we are now moving forward,” he said. Claypool said the association is currently looking for a market manager and vendors for the market. He acknowledged the flea market vend-
ors will be disappointed with the new direction but said they’ll simply take their wares to other flea markets in the region. Despite the abundance of farm stands in the Cloverdale area, Claypool says organizers aren’t worried about any competition they might pose because the new market will offer a unique experience. “To steal a line from Field of Dreams, ‘If you build it they will come’.”

❚MURDER TRIAL
‘Something snapped in my head,’ A Surrey man told a Tom ZYTARUK Staff Reporter psychiatrist he couldn’t go through with killing himself after stabbing his wife 126 times. The psychiatrist who interviewed Sebastiano Damin in hospital shortly after he attacked his wife with a kitchen knife said the elderly Surrey man told her he tried to kill himself too, but abandoned the attempt. Damin, 76, is being tried in B.C. Supreme Court in New Westminster for second-degree murder in the death of 69-year-old Maria Catroppa, his wife of 11 years. The killing happened in the bedroom of the couple’s gated Monta Rosa townhouse in Fleetwood on Nov. 24, 2009. The defence opened its case Monday asking that Justice Ian Josephson consider a verdict of manslaughter rather than murder. Serena Damin, the accused’s younger sister, testified Monday she still “can’t believe” her brother killed his wife. “He was never violent,” she said. “He was always a peaceful person.” “I never saw them fight,” she said. But she was worried about her his depression and, two days before the killing, voiced her concern. “I know you are doing the best you can but he needs professional care,” she said she told Catroppa, at the couple’s kitchen table. “Neither you or I are trained.” She said her brother didn’t weigh in. “He just listened. He never said no, he never said yes.”
Dr. Hemlata Joshi, a psychiatrist at Royal Columbian Hospital, testified Friday that Damin looked depressed but “didn’t appear agitated” when she asked him about the stabbing the day after it happened. “His thought content didn’t contain any element of psychotic

material.” She said Damin told her he and his wife had been arguing since about January that year, around the same time he began his struggle with depression. “He didn’t want to be alone,” she noted. “He wanted his wife to stay at home with him all the time.” Joshi said Damin told her this frustrated his wife because it impeded her independence. Catroppa was very sociable, whereas he wasn’t. “She’d get quite angry and threatened Sebastiano to move out of the house.” The psychiatrist said Damin told he’d argued with Catroppa before she left to run some errands. After supper they argued again, Joshi said, “over the same issues of Sebastiano not wanting to be left alone and his wife wanting to have more freedom.” They watched TV then went to their separate beds. Joshi said Damin denied wanting to ever harm his wife, or being

accused murderer told shrink Victim’s family helps others SURREY – The family of Surrey homicide victim Maria Catroppa has set up an endowment fund in the Fleetwood grandma’s name aimed at helping single mothers build a better life for themselves and their children. To qualify, the applicant must be a single mother enrolled at Kwantlen Polytechnic University, in financial need, who has experienced some form of adversity in life. A statement issued by the 69-year-old woman’s four children, and their respective families, calls for increased support for abused women “and strong sentences for those who abuse them.” Anyone wishing to make a tax-deductible donation to the Maria Catroppa Memorial Award Fund can call the Kwantlen Polytechnic University Foundation at 604599-2010. Catroppa was a “dedicated, loving mother and grandmother and an inspiration to all who knew her,” her family’s statement reads. Catroppa was born in 1940, in a small town in Southern Italy, and she and her first husband moved to Canada when she was 18. After he died in 1973, her children recall, Catroppa worked “against long odds” to put food on the table and keep a roof over their heads. “Mom was our light, our rock, our friend, our confidante, our protector, our provider, our guide, our father, our mother and our hero,” her family’s statement says. tzytaruk@thenownewspaper.com

angry with her when he went to bed that night. He told Joshi he woke up in the middle of the night, went to the kitchen for a glass of water, and “something snapped in my head.” Damin told her he grabbed a knife and stabbed Catroppa in her bedroom, but doesn’t remember what happened after the first few strikes. Joshi said Damin denied the attack was premeditated, “but rather stated it was a thought that happened at the moment.” Joshi said Damin remembered trying to stab himself in the neck and abdomen, to kill himself, but he couldn’t go through with it. He called 911 to say he’d killed his wife and tried killing himself, but couldn’t, and needed medical help. He then called neighbours and told them the same thing before laying down to wait for medics and police. Joshi said Damin told her he’s “extremely sorry and remorseful” for what happened. “He cannot believe he killed his wife.” She added he “adamantly denied” harbouring homicidal thoughts toward Catroppa prior to the attack. The court heard Damin took medication for depression but had been feeling worse during the two months prior to the stabbing. He told Joshi he would wake up in the middle of the night feeling anxious and worried, “and sometimes this would induce a panic attack.” The trial continues.

White Rock moves to improve sidewalks, main roads A staff report notes that sidewalks need to be at least two metres wide to accommodate wheelchairs, and even wider to accommodate bus shelters with transit benches. Electrical poles in the roadbed are of concern to both city officials and residents. Originally, the poles sat in the street shoulder, but expansion of North Bluff to four lanes has left 71 poles part of the roadbed, posing an obstacle for motorists. Construction is slated to start in June/July and completed by August. – Marisa Babic

There’s no sure thing when it comes to TV debates The kerfuffle over Green Party leader Elizabeth May’s exclusion from the federal leaders’ debate is a reminder there may be a conKeith troversy over the BALDREY make up of the next B.C. leaders’ debate. May lost a court challenge of the decision by the television media consortium – made up of national networks such as Global, CBC, CTV, Radio-Canada and TVA – to not invite her to participate in either of the English or French language debates. May’s loss in court may have negative implications for B.C. Green Party leader Jane Sterk’s chances for being included in the next B.C. debate (I stress the word “may” because no decision will be made by the B.C. television consortium for some time yet). The Greens have had their leader in the provincial debate since the 2001 election. Former Green leader Adrianne Carr was given a place because, at the time, the NDP was in free-fall in the polls and the spread between the NDP and the Greens had narrowed so much it was hard to argue that excluding the upstart Greens while including the fading NDP was somehow fair. Indeed, while Carr’s party didn’t elect an MLA in the election, it did pull in more than 12 per cent of the popular vote – more than half of what the NDP received that year. With that impressive showing, Carr was invited back to the 2005 vote. But the Green vote shrunk to just 9.2 per cent in that contest. Nevertheless, Carr’s successor as Green leader – Sterk – was invited to the 2009 debate. But the Green vote declined for the second straight election – down to just 8.2 per cent.

be the sole criterion for determining which party leader gets on the debate. There is some validity to this argument. Our first-past-the-post electoral system favours large established parties and makes it difficult for newer, smaller parties to win seats. At the national level, the Green party received almost one million votes in the 2008 election but won no seats. Should those near-million voters have no representation in the debate? At the provincial level, the Greens won almost 135,000 votes in 2009. Is that enough to get on the stage at the debate? May has complained the network consortium established the rules on an arbitrary basis. That may be true, but any rule anyone else comes up with is of an arbitrary nature as well. Perhaps there should be more than one criterion to establish which party leader is allowed in such debates. Such things as seat representation, portion of popular vote, a large number of candidates in the field, and significant polling results (from a series of polls over time) could be used as criteria, with leaders qualifying for inclu-
sion if their parties meet a set combination of those factors. But there is no sure thing when it comes to leaders’ televised debates. Neither Sterk nor, for that matter, newly installed B.C. Conservative Party leader John Cummins, is guaranteed a spot in the next provincial debate, even though they will vociferously argue for one. Indeed, Elizabeth May’s exclusion has officially opened the debate about the next B.C. debate. Keith Baldrey is chief political correspondent for Global BC Keith.Baldrey@globalnews.ca

So, a question naturally arises: should the Green leader be part of the next televised debate of B.C. political leaders? As someone who has some degree of input into the decision by B.C. television stations about the debate structure (I’ve helped negotiate the last three election debates with the parties involved in each one), I think it’s a fair question. The NDP has long complained about including the Greens in the debate. The party feels the Greens “steal” more votes from the NDP than from the B.C. Liberals and so has the most to lose from the publicity a debate appearance brings a political party. As well, a number of environmentalists have become increasingly frustrated with the Green party’s inability to connect with the voters, and wonder whether it’s more effective to shape stronger environmental values in the other parties rather than support the Greens. Despite three debate appearances, the Greens have yet to elect anyone and in fact haven’t even come close to winning a seat. However, the Greens argue that electing an MP or MLA should not

Voters seem to be mindless The Editor, Re: “Moderate majority has become politically homeless,” the Now letters, April 8. Is it possible that the “homeless” woes of the “moderate political majority” claimed by E. W. Bopp may be the result of some voters being “mindless?” Otherwise, “moderate majority”
or not, who would vote for MP Russ Hiebert? He has shown no respect for his constituents, whilst he spent our tax money like water for his own benefit. Not to mention, this incomesplitting campaign promise, which according to informed letter writer Penny Essex, is a borrowed Reform Party idea that favours the wealthy (himself) at the expense of single-parent families. Plus, when implemented, this bill would increase government spending by at least $2.5 billion. Duh!
E. Kearns, White Rock
Name changes are a waste The Editor, Re: “Why is province wasting cash changing ministry names?” the Now, April 8. Columnist Harvinder Sandhu wants to know why B.C. is wasting cash by changing names of ministries. To coin an old saying, an effective method to create the illusion of progress is to simply reorganize and the simplest means to reorganize is to change names. There is little or no benefit to the people of B.C.; there is a substantial benefit to the politician in that the perception that something significant has been accomplished. Even at the local government level, what was the benefit of
changing the name of the Greater Vancouver Regional District to Metro Vancouver? Maybe Metro Vancouver sounds better to some than GVRD, but as Sandhu asks, at what cost? Perhaps the bigger question posed by Sandhu is why do we have a political system that allows the most significant and powerful position in the province, the office of the premier, to be filled by someone who is not an elected government MLA?

Liberalism doesn’t work The Editor, This election will be crucial for Canada’s economic future. The recent comparisons of the economies of the G7 clearly show that the two countries with the best economic performance are Canada and Germany, both with Conservative governments. The countries with the worst economic problems, including the U.S., invariably have liberal or socialist governments. The reason for this glaring fact is that liberalism and socialism do not work and never have: they destroy wealth and redistribute misery. Only the private sector and entrepreneurial spirit can create wealth and prosperity. Consider this carefully during the election. The route to econom-
ic prosperity is with a Conservative majority.

he Editor, Your cartoonist has gone a little overboard with his message of how wonderful a coalition would be. Coalition – a formal arrangement by which statesmen, political parties, etc. agree to work together for a certain period of time or for a special purpose. No question, a laudable experiment if one was dealing with honourable and serious-minded people. What we have in Canada, however, are three leaders, two of whom do not agree on anything and a third who wants to break up the country. That is not a team, that is an invitation to disaster. I do not agree with everything Stephen Harper does, but given the choice between the three stooges and a slightly dictatorial prime minister, I think I will choose the latter and hope that he learns from his mistakes as an intelligent person would be expected to do.

Broken eggs but no omelette
The Editor, Re: “Trees had to go – live with it,” the Now letters, April 8. It is exceedingly appropriate for Mike Collard to justify the unpopular extensive environmental destruction along the South Fraser Perimeter Road route by quoting Vladimir Lenin’s vile rationalization for his massive killing spree. As one of Lenin’s contemporaries commented, I see only broken eggs. Where is the omelette? The river and railway beside this new road are able to carry way more freight than this new road ever will at no cost to the public, or environmental loss. Many of the Deltans angry about traffic on River Road lost their houses or backyards as a consequence. Lenin’s omelette is no more. And the many new highways and bridges this government is building, at the same time it’s applying a carbon tax on fuel to get us to drive less and oil is running out, will one day be surplus, and turned back into greenways. Now that’s an omelette. And we could have it today, if we just stopped this stupid thing.

Science fair organizer says students brought ‘A’ games SURREY – Science wizards from local schools showed off their projects at the 5th annual South Fraser Regional Science Fair hosted at Kwantlen Polytechnic University. Karen Morley, a key organizer, said this year’s fair attracted a record number of entries. “A 120 students presented 84 projects. This is a 32 per cent increase from last year,” Morley said. “We had only 62 projects last
year, so this is great.” Altogether, students from 40 public and independent schools in Surrey, White Rock and Delta developed projects for the science fair. And the calibre of the entries is also on the rise, noted Morley – “the highest so far.” The science fair is supported by a number of agencies, including the B.C. Innovation Council and Advanced System Integrators, a
Surrey company that offers numerous prizes to students. In total, the judges awarded nine gold medals, 12 silver and 10 bronze medals at the science fair, and altogether the students shared in $13,000 in cash awards and scholarships. Eight of the students will advance to the Canada Wide Science Fair in Toronto in May. – Marisa Babic

HOPE – A 39-yearold Surrey man has been arrested in connection with a stabbing at the Britton Creek rest area off the Coquihalla Highway last Friday. The accused’s name has not been released. He is expected to appear in provincial court on Tuesday. The man he is alleged to have stabbed was flown by the B.C. Ambulance Service to Kamloops, where he was treated for multiple stab wounds. He is expected to fully recover from his injuries, RCMP Const. Tracy Wolbeck said. The Surrey man and his alleged victim had been travelling together.
Chlorine leak forces evacuation rec centre SURREY – A chlorine leak led to the evacuation of the North Surrey rec centre at around noon on Thursday. Surrey Fire Capt. Marc Berube said recreation centre staff evacuated people out of the building moments after a chorine monitor alarm went off, alerting them to the leak. “Everyone was evacuated by the time we arrived,” Berube said. Firefighters and a Hazmat team were dispatched to the scene. Berube said fire department officials shut off the valve leading to the pool and the leaked chlorine quickly dissipated. He said the amount of substance that escaped was “small.” Berube said officials conduced several tests to ensure the air in the building was safe, and the readings registered zero. The Hazmat team has handed over the file to the City of Surrey, which operates the facility, for investigation.
Surrey gets $3.8M grant from province

SURREY – The City of Surrey is getting a bit of cash back from Victoria. The city has been granted $3.3 million as part of the Strategic Community Investment Fund, which is dishing out a total of $63.8 million throughout the province. The total to be divvied up was boosted to $3.8 million, thanks to savings realized by municipalities’ efforts in going green, enabling the reimbursement of carbon taxes. – Compiled by staff

❚CLASSIC CAR
Wherever Ewald Penner Tom ZILLICH drives in the 1938 BMW he Staff reporter helped restore, heads are turned. When the rare convertible makes a stop, from White Rock to West Van, the cameras start clicking. “We couldn’t leave one place for half an hour,” Penner said with a smile. “People love to look at it and learn about it — even non-car buffs.” Owned by a retired couple from Washington State, the ivory-and-black Beemer was restored from scratch by Penner and crew at Jellybean AutoCrafters, a shop located in the Sullivan area of Surrey. The restoration job involved more than 5,000 hours of work over the past couple of years, resulting in a vehicle valued at close to a whopping $550,000. “It was nothing but a frame when it was brought here,” recalled Penner, who runs Jellybean with his brother, Kurt. “There wasn’t a bolt attached anywhere, nothing assembled.” It took hundreds of hours of research to
figure out what it all looked like back then, and how it could all be pieced together using modern technology. Some 4,000 photographs document the painstaking restoration process, from bare frame to finished beauty. “We designed it, engineered it, fabricated parts, built it, painted it, everything, top to bottom.” The Penners are youngest of 12 kids who immigrated with their parents from Brazil in the 1960s. In Canada, the boys’ older
brothers got into cars and the passion was contagious. “It’s a hobby gone bad,” said Ewald. who lives in North Delta and launched Jellybean about eight years ago. “This is the most expensive restoration job we’ve ever done, no question,” he added. People in the car world are amazed by what the Jellybean crew has accomplished, Penner said. The vehicle was a highlight of the Classic Alley collection of vehicles at the recent Vancouver International Auto Show, held following a Feb. 23 “unveiling party” at the Jellybean shop. The vehicle is considered one of the most significant in auto history, with its leading-edge performance and handling, tubular frame and inline six-cylinder engine. This month, the car is being driven on test runs before it’s picked up by its owner for touring and street rallies in the U.S. “It’s part of the family now, like our son growing up and moving out” Penner said of the Beemer. “It was an honour to build this car.” tzillich@thenownewspaper.com

What about jail time for drivers who use cellphone?
off the road to dial, aren’t as responsive to other drivers and are more careless in general. You always know when you are behind someone who is using their hand-held device. They are the ones with their head glued to their shoulder, or are swerving from side to side on the road as they try to dial a number or text. And it doesn’t matter if I pull up beside them and motion for them to put their cellphone down. Somehow, to them, I come off looking like the rude one. Let me suggest this for all selfish people on the road who continue to ignore the law and feel somehow that they are above it: Instead of a fine, let’s institute jail time and a driving ban. If we have zero tolerance for drinking and driving on our roads in B.C., why not the same implications for those who still use their hand-held devices while driving? We need to get the message across to drivers that using a hand-held device while driving is like a game of Russian roulette. The odds of causing an accident increase dramatically every time they do it. Why take the chance? So, Mr. Smith, I beg you and all other drivers to put down the cellphone — and nobody gets hurt.

Exactly what will it take for drivers to put their cellphones down while on the road? After more than one year since the law was enforced, many people in B.C. continue to use Kelley their hand-held cellSCARSBROOK phones on the road. The other day, as I was leaving my son’s soccer game in South Surrey, a parent in the parking lot (let’s call him Mr. Smith) pulled out in front of us with his children in the back seat and a cellphone in his left hand. As he was chatting away, he almost rear-ended another car in front of him. We try to protect children at all costs and yet, here is Mr. Smith, clearly not considering the safety of his own children — or any of the other children in the cars surrounding him. Was the conversation Mr. Smith had really that important he couldn’t wait until he arrived at his destination — or, at the very least, used a hands-free device in his car? Perhaps the fine of $167 and three penalty points is just not enough of a deterrent for drivers like Mr. Smith to put down their cellphones. Or is it that people like this truly cannot see how serious their actions are? Worst yet, they can — but just don’t think they will ever get caught doing it. Using a hand-held device in the car is the equivalent to drinking and driving. People who talk on their hand-held phones in the car tend to take their eyes

❚ NATIONAL VOLUNTEER WEEK Thank you to our volunteers!
A salute to our valued volunteers
Mayor Lois E. Jackson and Delta Council salute the volunteers in our community who dedicate their time, talents and energy towards making Delta a better place to live, work and play.
This year’s 68th annual National Volunteer Week takes place from April 10 to 16 — a great time to celebrate Canada’s volunteers, volunteerism and civic participation. National Volunteer Week pays tribute to the millions of Canadian volunteers who graciously donate their time and energy. The work of volunteers is essential to maintaining resilient communities at home and around the world. Canadians have a rich history of volunteering and community involvement. With 12.5 million of them dedicating their time across Canada, volunteers are

creating positive change on many fronts — community health care, sports and recreation, heritage and arts, environmental protection and advocacy, disaster relief, international development, and volunteer firefighting — the list is endless. National Volunteer Week was first proclaimed in 1943 as an initiative to draw the public’s attention to the vital contribution of women to the war effort on the home front. In the late 1960s, the focus was revived and broadened to include all community volunteers. Online, check out volunteer.ca for more details about National Volunteer Week and how to get involved as a volunteer.

In recognition of National Volunteer Week, ICBC is thanking Surrey, Delta and White Rock volunteers for their continued support in making the communities safer. In these areas, nearly 500 volunteers work out of 11 community policing offices and police detachments to help deliver road safety programs, including Speed Watch, Lock Out Auto Crime and the Stolen Auto Recovery program. “The extraordinary dedication to road safety shown by these volunteers and community policing offices is remarkable and truly appreciated,” said Jon Schubert, ICBC’s president
and CEO. In 2010, Speed Watch volunteers in Surrey, Delta and White Rock contributed approximately 4,500 hours to help reduce speed-related crashes in their communities. With the support of volunteers, speed-related crashes have steadily decreased in B.C. over the last five years. Volunteers use radar and speed-reader boards supplied by ICBC to show drivers how fast they’re actually travelling. In 2010, Lock Out Auto Crime volunteers in this region handed out approximately 44,000 notices to drivers to draw attention to the risk of auto theft. Volunteers place notices
resembling parking tickets on the windshields of vehicles, many with garage door openers or valuables in sight, offering the owners common sense tips for preventing auto theft. These volunteers also operate the Stolen Auto Recovery program in Surrey, Delta and White Rock; in 2010, they scanned approximately 672,000 licence plates to help identify stolen vehicles. Each year, volunteers help to recover hundreds of stolen vehicles in B.C. Drop by your neighbourhood community policing office to see how you can get involved and help keep your community safe.

A poorly maintained vehicle can increase fuel consumption by as much as 50 per cent. Change the engine oil every 5,000 km or six months – unless you regularly do long distance highway driving, then change it at a maximum 12,000 km intervals. Use an energy-conserving oil that is suited to the season. Check tire pressure at least once a month and watch for signs of unusual tire tread wear that might indicate an alignment problem. An under-inflated tire has a greater rolling resistance. A 20 per cent drop in pressure will increase fuel consumption by about 10 per cent and reduce tread life by 15 per cent. A faulty cooling system thermostat that doesn’t allow the engine to quickly reach or maintain its correct operating temperature can dramatically increase fuel consumption and affect the performance of an electronically controlled engine.

Combine tasks into a single trip rather than making several trips throughout the day. And, because an engine also consumes more fuel during its warm-up period, try picking up groceries and the dry-cleaning on your way home from work instead of making a special trip.
Drive Smarter
· Don’t warm up your car unnecessarily.
Driving the vehicle slower and keeping the engine speed low until its normal operating temperature is reached, is a more fuel-efficient way to warm up your car.
· Look ahead and adjust your speed.

IT’S THE UNBELIEVABLE,
Leaving a car running unnecessarily (i.e., in a ferry line-up or while chatting with a neighbour) is wasteful. Shutting off and re-starting the engine generally consumes less fuel and emits less pollutants than allowing a car to sit idling for long periods of time.

❚ LIVING ❚TRAVEL
CHICAGO: A living museum of grand architecture “Did you know Margaret DEEFHOLTS Chicago was built Now contributor on a swamp?” asks my guide, Jim Gary. We are standing in front of the highest building in Chicago — the 108storey-high Willis Tower (once the Sears building), which soars 1,451 feet against the sky. I stare. “You’re kidding!” He smiles and shakes his head. “As early as 1873, architect Frederick Bauman, devised a 10-storey building that stood on a broad foundation pad, thereby distributing its weight over the marshland. Twenty years later, architects devised vertical and transverse iron and steel girders as skeletons for supporting brick walls.” He waves his hand expansively at the scene around us. “And so, in the late 1800s, the first American skyscraper was born here in Chicago!” Today, that legacy has expanded to include extraordinary edifices of glass, steel and, yes, even terra cotta, resulting in a melange of styles that define Chicago as a living museum of grand architectural design. Gary is a volunteer “greeter” with a Chicago tourism office program that takes visitors on free tours around the city year-round, regardless of weather. I’m apologetic about my lack of knowledge of architecture. He reassures me. “You don’t need a degree, just an eye for the unusual. The city has many faces; some are wacky, others, breathtaking.” We walk the city’s Loop, a business district south of the Chicago River that bristles with theatres, art galleries, restaurants, museums and street art — murals by Miro and an enigmatic metal sculpture by Picasso. The Marquette Building, a structure with a
brown-banded terra cotta façade, was among the first of the city’s steel-framed structures. The entrance hall rotunda is adorned with Tiffany mosaics depicting natives greeting Fr. Marquette and Louis Jolliet, the first explorers to arrive in this area. The iconic “Chicago” theatre sign on State Street beckons and I pause to take in the five-storey grand entrance. Gilded Baroque embellishments, velvet drapes, Renaissance art and glittering chandeliers play up Chicago’s flashy show biz persona. I board Chicago’s First Lady, one of Chicago Architectural Foundation’s fleet of riverfront vessels. On this pleasantly breezy afternoon, we pass 50 or more buildings running the gamut from classical to modernistic. There is the dazzling white glazed terra-cotta façade of Wrigley’s building, the diamond-shaped upper storied facet of the Smurfit-Stone building and the whimsical Marina City semi-circular structures, aptly nicknamed the “The Corncobs.” The walls of the multi-tiered Tribune Tower, home of the city’s Tribune newspaper, are embedded with pieces from Westminster Abbey, Cologne Cathedral, the Alamo, the Great Pyramid and the Arc de Triomphe. Lake Point Tower has a curvilinear glass tinted wall and, at the east end of the river, the 86-floor Aqua rises like a rippled wave. A tour through the five-storied Chicago Cultural Centre is an absolute must on any visitor’s wish list. Built in five years from 1892 to 1897, it is the grand old dame of the city’s architectural heritage. Two magnificent glass domes are highlights; the Grand Army of the Republic glass dome, with a botanical theme, shimmers in warm autumnal colours, while the Tiffanydesigned dome in Bradley Hall is a
guru Frank Lloyd Wright. A small, dark entrance hall leads to a short flight of steps, opening into the light and airy living room and adjoining dining room. The exterior is one of linearity — horizontal strips bind the red brick building, its length relieved by glass windows etched with geometric diamond-shaped designs. At Millennium Park, whimsy vies with the avant garde. Anish Kapoor’s “Cloud Gate,” inspired by a drop of mercury, (known as “The Bean”) offers visitors multiple distorted metallic reflections in its concave underbelly. A few steps away, the stage of the Jay Pritzker Pavilion is sheltered under a canopy of curling steel petals, from which webbed criss-cross pipes embedded with amplifiers fan out to carry sound to as many as 13,000 listeners. Sleek, gleaming and modernistic, it is Chicago’s 21st-century showpiece.

composite of 2,848 faceted glass jewels and rippled opalescent glass cut into a fish-scale pattern. This was the original library, and the walls are stippled in mosaics that bear the names and quotations of famous literati. Mosaic designs in glowing colours of jade, topaz, sapphire and ruby also border the sweeping marble stairwells. This is American 19th century decorative art at its finest. A bus tour run by Chicago Architectural Foundation takes me through a narrated tour of Chicago’s Gold Coast neighbourhood — gracious old mansions lining shady avenues. The highlight of the tour is Robie House, designed by 20th century architectural

Tritons shine, Blue Jays fade in openers
Sports
The White Rock Tritons turned the Michael BOOTH 2010 B.C. Premier League standings Sports Editor upside down when they swept a doubleheader with the Vancouver Cannons to open the 2011 season on Saturday. Winners of just eight games in an injury-plagued 2010 season, the Tritons started the new campaign showing much better form in beating the Cannons 3-2 and 4-3 in New Westminster. “It was a great start for us,” said White Rock’s rookie head coach Russ Smithson. “We kind of peaked at the right time because we kind of struggled in the preseason but it all came together on the right weekend. Both games were very intense and neither team had a bigger lead than two runs at any time. Our starting pitching was excellent; both guys took us into the seventh inning and then we brought in a closer and got the job done. “It’s nice to start the season fresh with a winning streak. Everything in the past is gone and we’re moving forward with some nice momentum.” Josh Larsen earned the win on the mound in Game 1 as the Tritons scored three runs in the fifth inning to erase a 2-0 deficit en route to the win. The Tritons’ Sunday doubleheader in Victoria was rained out. In Game 2 it was Joel Lamont who got the job done on the bump, allowing three hits in six innings of work. Talon Van Horn and Sean McGuire each finished with one RBI. Meanwhile at Mackie Park in North Delta, one of the hottest teams of a year ago cooled off dramatically in their home opener. The North Delta Blue Jays have nothing to show for their opening day after losing 2-0 and 9-8 to the visiting Okanagan Athletics. North Delta pitcher Quinn Allen allowed just three hits over eight innings in the first game but Okanagan’s Jake Maters fanned 11 Jays while earning his first win of the season in extra innings. In the second game, the Blue Jays put their efforts into cruise control one inning too soon and they blew an 8-1 seventh inning lead and lost 9-8 in the eighth. “It was the fate of the baseball gods that we fooled around with and when you fool around with karma, it’s going to come back and bite you,” groused Blue Jays general manager Bob Burkmar. “The funny thing with this game is just when you think it’s over, it really isn’t over. It should have ended 8-1, but then they got a couple of runs and suddenly they had life.” The two teams were supposed to play two more games on Sunday but the schedule was rained out.

❚ SPORTS ❚PREMIER RUGBY
Sharks ousted by Ravens
The Bayside Sharks’ Michael BOOTH season closed with a Sports Editor whimper thanks to a 44-16 loss to the UBC Old Boys Ravens in Canadian Direct Insurance premier rugby action in Vancouver Saturday. Needing either a win over the Ravens or a loss by Burnaby against UVic, the Sharks got neither and were eliminated from postseason play. Missing several key veterans for the second consecutive week, the Sharks could only muster a trio of penalty goals in the first half to answer three tries by the Ravens. Trailing 17-9 at the break, the Sharks and Ravens traded tries in the first 15 minutes of the second half before the home side pulled away with four unanswered tries to close out the scoring. “The funny thing is we didn’t play badly, they just scored some easy tries,” said Bayside coach David Benoit. “It was
just one of those days. There was one time where the ball bounced off of our guy’s chest and into the hands of their winger and he falls down for a try. That’s when I knew it was over. “They exposed our back three (wingers and fullback) and exposed the fact that we need to get better there. It is what it is. The guys played hard and the Ravens are a good team, but poor defensive play and bad tackling really hurt us.” Peter Clifford led the Sharks with three penalties and a convert while Zach Thorpe scored Bayside’s lone try in the second half. Bayside’s first division side lost in Vancouver Saturday but the team has qualified for the playoffs. The Sharks play at Castaway Wanderers on Vancouver Island in the first round. The third division Sharks have one league game remaining and are already assured of a playoff berth.
❚WOMEN’S SOCCER
Surrey idles as cup play begins Idling is bad for the Michael BOOTH environment and it hurts Sports Editor championship soccer teams, too. Surrey United last saw action March 27 when they won the Metro Women’s Soccer League’s Premier Cup following an undefeated regular season. Now the seventime Provincial Cup champs must sit idle until the weekend of April 30 when they enter the provincial tourney in the quarterfinal round. “It’s tough to find opposition to play, that’s the challenge,” said Surrey United executive director Martin Foden. “To go that long without playing a game is something we want to avoid. Our biggest challenge right now is finding enough exhibition games to give us the proper preparation we need to go into the Provincial Cup tournament.” The problem for the top women’s club soccer teams in the province is there are
so few of them. The men’s Provincial Cup draw features a field of 20 teams with four preliminary round games played last weekend. Conversely, the women’s draw features only a dozen teams and after the preliminary round, the quarter-final round doesn’t get going until the end of April. The long layoff can help when it comes to players recovering from injury but when you’re healthy and raring to go, a month of enforced idleness can prove harmful to a team. “You can kind of get tired of training all the time, especially when you’re training three times per week and that’s all you’re doing,” said veteran Surrey striker Megan Blaker. “A long break can also be good because it’s an opportunity to regroup and refocus on our goals. Yes we had a good season, but that means nothing now. The provincials are the next and most important step of getting back to where we want to be and that’s the nationals.”

Demand for Graphic Design Technology Specialists
Spurs New CDI College Program Surrey program prepares grads to use advanced design software Technologies used in the graphic design industry have become increasingly complex over the past several decades. With new design software emerging all the time, employers are demanding specialists who can stay on top of trends and technologies. CDI College’s Graphic Design Technology Specialist program trains students to become experts with industry-standard software like Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, Fireworks, and After Effects at its Surrey campus. It teaches students to use industry-standard design software applications, create digital images, and develop editing and processing skills. Students become experts in using technology to digitally manipulate photos, layout designs with QuarkXpress and Adobe InDesign, create website prototypes and application interfaces, and produce interactive digital media projects, including motion graphics. Students in this program are trained for roles in multimedia and digital support, such as visual information/ multimedia specialists,
web and graphic design specialists, design software specialists, or other roles in the digital media and graphics field. “CDI College continues to meet the increased demand for skills-based training in British Columbia,” says Dr. Bohdan Bilan, Vice President of Academics for CDI College. “This program was developed with input from professionals within the graphic design and multimedia industries, which means our students learn to master the most relevant tools, techniques and technologies used in the job market today.” A variety of employers are seeking employees with specialized expertise who can bring their unique perspective to all digital design projects, who are good at multi-tasking, and who have strong problem-solving skills within and across applications. CDI College’s Graphic Design Technology Specialist diploma program graduates excel in all of these areas. “This program meets the demands of the growing multimedia design industry in British Columbia and across Canada,” says Randy Cox, President and CEO, CDI College. “Increasingly, employers are demanding workers who have the specialized software skills this program teaches.” CDI College offers the Graphic Design Technology Specialist program at its Surrey and Abbotsford campuses. These two communities are both growing rapidly and offer expanding employment opportunities in a number of fields. Both are close to the hustle and bustle of Vancouver, but provide a quieter alternative to the big city. CDI College’s Surrey and
Abbotsford campuses are easily accessible by the public transit system or by car. CDI College is Canada’s largest career training institute with 19 campuses in five provinces across the country. For more than 40 years, CDI College has been a leading career training institution helping thousands of students achieve career goals and aspirations. The college offers dozens of specialized diploma programs in the fields of business, technology and health care, which feature realworld training from experienced instructors, small class sizes, flexible schedules and career placement assistance. Programs are created with industry input, ensuring curricula is current, relevant and practical. Are you interested in building a career in multimedia and digital support? Here's How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Local Celtic-rock favourites — and longtime champions of environmental causes — Spirit of the West hits the stage at 8 p.m. Saturday, April 16 at Central City Plaza.
Plenty of music at two-day Party for the Planet
F
or two days this weekend, Central City Plaza will again be alive with great music. Surrey’s free, family-friendly Party for the Planet offers a great mix of sounds in celebration of Earth Day. The musical headliner, Spirit of the West, is a local favourite and a longtime champion of environmental causes dating back to their mid-1980s days of playing gigs on Commercial Drive in Vancouver. The band that became Spirit of the West began as a folk trio called Evesdropper nearly 30 years ago. Thirteen albums later, they have achieved status as one of the most beloved ‘Legacy Artists’ in Canadian history, having proven themselves to be road-worthy and durable. Hannah Georgas, another headliner at Party for the Planet, is an injection of new
energy to the Canadian independent scene. And she’s doing it all the old fashioned way — with grit and clear self-direction, the kind that took Georgas from open mic nights in empty bars to sold-out shows in popular night clubs. Elsewhere on the Party for the Planet stage, Surrey-based En Karma delivers highenergy shows with its bhangra sound. Greg Sczebel returns to Surrey on Saturday with his Juno Award-winning mix of soul, pop, jazz and rock. Also on stage, Aidan Knight performs haunted chamber-folk and orchestral pop that saw him turning heads and gaining momentum throughout 2010, while Dirty Radio features Farshad Edalat, a Vancouver based singer/songwriter/producer and multi-instrumentalist.
Elsewhere at Party for the Planet, George Leach will show why he’s become an undeniably bright star of the Sta’atl’imx Nation from the interior of British Columbia, while The Freshest (comprised of DJs Seko, Marvel, Kutcorners and Rico Uno) will reveal their party-rocking DJ collective ways. Swelling in primordial pulses and wholloping whoops, the tacit tones of Shane Philip’s didgeridoo hold the power to still listeners into silence or encourage audiences to rise up in a tribal swell of intoxicating spirit — with sometimes but a heartbeat in between. For a closer look at the entertainment lineup at Surrey’s Party for the Planet, visit www.surrey.ca/partyfortheplanet. The action happens Friday, April 15 from 4 to 9 p.m. and Saturday, April 16 from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Party for the Planet
Two days of celebrating our Earth E arth Day is such a hit in Surrey that this year, the annual party is stretching over two days. Party for the Planet, the city’s earth-centred celebration presented by Coast Capital Savings, is slated to run Friday from 4-9 p.m. and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. The free family-friendly event will include
a visit from Sesame Street’s Elmo, Canada’s first ever Bike Powered Main Stage and Surrey first Green Zip Line and Aerial Element System – a carbon-neutral physical adventure. While there, be sure to check out the compressed natural gas waste collection truck and technology, which will be on display.
The entertainment lineup for Friday features the Freshest DJ Collective and the Creation Story by Kla-How-Eya Youth Theatre Players. Saturday will see performances from Spirit of the West, Hannah Georgas, Aidan Knight, George Leach as well as Bobs & Lolo, Tambura Rasa, Shane Philip and 2011 Juno winner Greg Sczebel. What’s Earth Day without enviro-activi-
ties? Check out Agriculture Alley, Community Corridor, Energy Avenue, Nature Nook, Transportation Trail and First Nations Village. There will be plenty of features and demonstrations to take in as well. For more information, log onto www.surrey.ca/partyfortheplanet or look it up on Facebook. – The Now

Student art contest puts Earth Day on view in Newton Tom Zillich Now staff

province-wide art competition with roots in Surrey will be held to mark Earth Day this year. The top 50 winning works by high school students from around B.C. are being exhibited at the new Newton Cultural Centre. A total of $3,500 in prize money will be given to the top three artists. “It’s a pretty special project, a first in a lot of ways,” said Marc Pelech, art instructor at Sullivan Heights Secondary and co-ordinator of the Earth Day Art Show and Competition. The provincial Community, Sport and Cultural Development ministry is a financial backer of the competition, designed to have student artists showcase their impressions of important environmental issues. “Given the interest in the environment shared by many young British Columbians, I’m confident the competition will result in some first-rate, thought-provoking art,” said minster Stephanie Cadieux, MLA for Surrey-Panorama. Participation was open to all grade 9 to 12 students enrolled in a B.C. secondary school, public or private. Cash prizes are

$2,000 for first place, $1,000 for second and $500 for third. A panel of three members from B.C.’s arts community will jury submissions through the Arts Council of Surrey.
“Students will apply creativity and skill to show through their art how an environmental issue impacts their lifestyle now – or how it might do so in the future,” said Pelech, who spent his spring break readying the
works for exhibition, with a gala planned for Earth Day (April 22). Works will also be showcased on the ministry’s website. tzillich@thenownewspaper.com

Green Zip Line, Landscape Lane and more at event this weekend AGRICULTURE ALLEY: Did you know that approximately one-third of the city’s total land base is agricultural land and the city is home to over 500 farms? Surrey farmers produce a large percentage of BC’s celery, carrots, onions, and lettuce. Other crops produced in Surrey include potatoes, blueberries, and greenhouse and nursery crops. Forage and pasture are also significant farm uses. Visit Agriculture Alley for the opportunity to learn about the people and places that bring food to your table. GREEN ZIP LINE: Looking for a unique, human-powered activity for Earth Day? Experience the Green Aerial Activity Centre by WildPlay Element Parks. Come face a test of balance, agility and co-ordination on three fun and challenging WildPlay Monkido games, featuring a thrilling zipline, reaching over 80 feet in length. Suspended 21 feet up over Central City Plaza, participants can feel the adrenaline rush of high-enjoyment, aerial challenges that require no traditional fuels (they’re all human-powered). Hours of operation are Friday from 5 to 9 p.m. and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tickets will be issued on a first come, first serve basis at the WildPlay Aerial Activity ticket desk at the event site. LANDSCAPE LANE: Visit Landscape Lane to participate in the promise of protecting the urban forest, with insight from the City of Surrey’s tree and landscaping professionals. A backyard tree sale is presented by City of Surrey Urban Forestry. WATER WAY: Did you know that Surrey has more than 1,400 kilometres of ur ban streams running throug h its neighbourhoods and parkland? These streams, both minor and major, provide spawning and rearing habitat for salmon and trout, as well as a myriad of wildlife species within each stream corridor. Preserving water quality and protecting these natural areas promotes healthy and productive stream environments. At Water Way, meet Mr. And Mrs. Salmon at the booth and enter the contest to name them.

D
id you know that Surrey is the municipailty in Canada to have a hydrogen fuelling station? The fuelling station is part of the city’s Green Energy Fleet plan that will see as many as 21 alternate-fuel vehicles which will include vehicles powered by hydrogen, electricity and compressed natural gas.
Fuel cells generates electricity through an internal chemical reaction. The electricity is used to drive the vehicle and the only byproduct of the reaction is water. The city plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 20 per cent by 2020. Mayor Dianne Watts and city council unveiled the system in November. – The Now
