SURREY – “I’m a Libertarian. I have no intention of letting anyone’s rights be trampled on.” So said Surrey North candidate Norris Barens after winning a fight with the management of Central City Mall over his right to campaign on their site. It all began around noon on April 11 when Barens’ campaign manager began handing out pamphlets inside the mall. Bruce Behrhorst was passing out the Libertarian Party brochures to shoppers in the common area of the mall when a security officer told him to stop. “They can’t do that. The Canada Elections Act allows campaigning in public areas of malls,” Barens said. Central City Mall has since had a change of heart. Barens received an email from Central City vice-president and general manager, Bill Remple. Remple said he needed time to verify the information he was given by Barens. Once he did so, he reversed the original position. “We confirmed he and his direct representatives have the right to campaign here. I’ve confirmed this with Elections Canada,” Remple said. “Everyone’s happy to my understanding.”

SURREY – Now here’s an unlikely cheerleader... Surrey-Cloverdale Liberal MLA Kevin Falcon is simply delighted that Adrian Dix won the NDP leadership contest on Sunday, claiming his victory presents a “wonderful opportunity” for the governing Liberal party come the next election. “He’s one of the most left-wing dogmatic members of the NDP I have ever come across,” Falcon charged. “He’s going to push hard that 1970’s vision of socialism.” Falcon, who is considered to be farther right than many other Liberal MLAs, figures centrist-minded voters will be wary of Dix. But Bruce Ralston, NDP MLA for Surrey-Whalley and an ardent Dix supporter, says Falcon’s got it wrong. “They can try that, but I don’t think it’s going to work,” Ralston said.

❚B.C. POLITICS

SURREY – The hated Ted HST reared its head as COLLEY Staff Reporter Prime Minister Stephen Harper campaigned in the Lower Mainland last weekend. Harper was careful to distance himself and his government from the furor the tax has caused in this province, saying the upcoming provincial referendum on the HST has nothing to do with him. Harper’s opponents see it otherwise. NDP candidate Jasbir Sandhu is taking on Conservative incumbent Dona Cadman in Surrey North. Sandhu again took Cadman to task for going back on her promise to vote against the HST in Parliament in December 2009. Cadman said she would vote “no” because the vast majority of her constituents were opposed to the tax. When the time came, however, Cadman did not vote no. She stayed away from the House and didn’t vote on the issue at all, explaining later she did not wish to embarrass her party with a “no” vote. “She promised she would vote against the HST, then when the vote came, she ran away from it,” Sandhu charged. Cadman did not respond to a request for comment.

Sandhu said Cadman and Harper might not want to be involved with the tax’s political impact in B.C. but said wishing doesn’t make it so. “If this wasn’t a federal issue, why JASBIR SANDHU would Harper be giving $1.6 billion to the province for adopting the HST?” he asked. Ottawa offered the $1.6 billion to B.C. as an incentive to encourage the province to harmonize its sales tax with the GST. “Harper and (former premier Gordon) Campbell worked together to impose the HST on B.C. Now Harper wants to take back the $1.6 billion, punishing the people of B.C. twice over.” Sandhu said an NDP government would not require B.C. to repay the $1.6 billion. When asked how the lost federal funds could be made up, Sandhu said, “Well, maybe the billions Harper is giving away in corporate tax cuts is a way to make up that money.” tcolley@thenownewspaper.com

Surrey man charged with murder in Chicago CHICAGO – U.S. authorities are alleging that a Surrey man charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of a former girlfriend in a Chicago suburb Wednesday made sure that Illinois had abolished the death penalty first, according to a United Press International report. Last month Illinois became the 16th U.S. state to abolish capital punishment. Demetry Smirnov, 20, could face life in prison if he’s convicted of murder. Jitka Vesel, 36, was shot dead in a parking lot in Oakbrook, Illinois. DEMETRY SMIRNOV Smirnov has been denied bail and is expected to appear in court on May 9. News reports say the accused and his alleged victim had met online.

Mayor breaks ground for 40-storey tower SURREY – Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts helped turn the first sod Saturday for Ultra, a 40-storey tower at 13339 102A Ave. in City Centre. Before that, he served as chief of staff for former NDP premier Glen Clark. Delta North MLA Guy Gentner had supported Farnworth in the race, but says Dix is “very strong on the social justice issues.” Gentner dismisses Falcon’s assessment of Dix. “We get caught in these ‘isms,’” he said. “I don’t see that at all. I think Adrian’s a pragmatist and he’s going to lead us into victory.” Liberal leader Christy Clark, a premier without a seat in the legislature, has called for a byelection on May 11 where she hopes to take over former premier Gordon Campbell’s vacated seat in Vancouver-Point Grey, a seat he held since 1996. The next general election is scheduled for May 2013, but Clark has indicated she wants it done sooner.

RICHMOND – A young Surrey woman who pleaded guilty to dumping her dead baby boy in the garbage in 2010 was sentenced in Richmond provincial court on Monday to one year’s house arrest and two years’ probation. Courtny Dawn Taylor, 22, gave birth in the bathroom of her boyfriend’s home in Richmond. The court heard she told him she’d miscarried. The boy’s body was thrown into a dumpster behind a school. Police later found the part of the baby’s body at the Burns Bog landfill, following a three-day search. Because only part of his body was found, an autopsy couldn’t determine if he’d been born alive or dead. The Crown sought a conditional sentence of 18 months plus three years probation while the defence sought a conditional discharge.

SURREY – Local Tom ZILLICH Staff Reporter backers of cloth diapers will be bundling babies in an attempt to help set a world record this Saturday morning. The Great Cloth Diaper Change is happening simultaneously around the planet, including at an inaugural baby fair planned for the clubhouse at Coyote Creek golf course. The goal of the Earth Day-related event is to set a world record for the most cloth diapers ever changed at the same time, with an estimated 10,000 people signed up at events around the globe. Forty or more babies will be changed at the Surrey event, with more people encouraged to get involved. Local event organizer Catherine Clutchey, a Whalley resident, became passionate about the use of cloth diapers three years ago with her second son, and launched a home-based business, called Bouncing Babies, to distribute them. “When my first son came home from hospital, someone suggested I cloth-diaper him, and I thought they were nuts,” Clutchey said. “When my second son was born, he had really bad diaper rush, a bad reaction to disposable diapers, so that’s when I tried cloth diapers for the first time, and I loved it. Once I tried it and liked it, I wanted to let others know how easy it is to use cloth diapers.” For Clutchey, it’s about saving money – and saving the environment, too.

“There are millions of disposable diapers thrown into landfills every day, and that is atrocious,” she said. “We have to be more eco-aware and friendly to the earth, and that’s important to me, too.” Clutchey works parttime as a registered CATHERINE CLUTCHEY nurse in the neonatal intensive care unit at Surrey Memorial Hospital. “I pretty much change diapers for a living,” she said. “They don’t use cloth diapers there (at the hospital), but I definitely want to get them in there. Some manufacturers make diapers for NIC-U, so I’m trying to track those down and get them into my manager’s hands.” There’s a buzz about cloth diapers these days, she said. “But I’m so close to it, in the market,” Clutchey admitted, “but everywhere I go people are really interested to learn more about them. People want their children to grow up in a better world, and we’re getting away from using so plastic bags to using cloth bags, things like that. This is part of that change of attitude, hopefully.” At Coyote Creek, the Great Cloth Diaper Change event happens at 9 a.m., with a baby fair to follow until 1 p.m. To get involved, email Clutchey at info@ bouncingbabies.ca.

Guilty verdict in 1998 Surrey murder

VAISAKHI PARADE

NEW WESTMINSTER – “Thank you God. Thank you everybody.” These words rolled out of Jeanie Fraser’s mouth as she exited a packed courtroom in B.C. Supreme Court in New Westminster today (Friday). Gary Donald Johnston, 53, had just been found guilty of second-degree murder in the March 10, 1998 stabbing of her brother Vic Fraser, a Sapperton crane operator. “It’s been a long haul you guys,” Jeanie told reporters, adding she’d been waiting 4,745 days for justice. “There is justice out there.” The Clayton Heights resident had long wondered if the RCMP would ever arrest someone in the 13-year-old homicide case,

Throughout the year Surrey plays host to many events which are organized by a variety of community groups and cultural organizations. City Council makes every attempt to accommodate these events while recognizing that some impact the community more than others. Surrey's diversity offers the opportunity to experience the traditions and customs of other cultures. City Council works to promote respect and understanding for each cultural group within our city. This support manifests itself in recognizing and supporting important occasions and traditions. Measures, such as printed event notices in local newspapers and the advanced posting of traffic disruption notices, are taken to minimize the impact as much as possible. RCMP and BC Ambulance Service are present at such events to aid the community and ensure the event is as safe and controlled as possible. The annual Vaisakhi Parade is scheduled to take place on Saturday, April 23, 2011. The parade will begin at approximately 9:30 AM at Gurdwara Sahib Dasmesh Darbar, located at 12885-85 Avenue, and will conclude there at approximately 4:00 PM. To facilitate parade activities, area residents and businesses should be advised there will be: • Road Closures • Traffic Disruptions • Restricted Access • Temporary Parking Restrictions

❚ NEWS ❚FEDERAL ELECTION

We won’t accept federal cash, Greens say after candidate quits over Facebook quote SURREY – Green Ted COLLEY Party officials say they Staff Reporter will not accept federal subsidies for any votes for their former candidate in Fleetwood-Port Kells. Federal parties gaining at least two per cent of eligible votes are entitled to a pervote subsidy set at $2.04 per vote. Alan Saldanha was the Green candidate in Fleetwood-Port Kells until this week when scandal overtook him. Saldanha’s Facebook site included a favourite quote, one ascribed to Confucius, that read: “If rape is inevitable, lie back and enjoy it.” When the entry was made public, Saldanha resigned his candidacy.

However, the riding’s returning officer, Denis Weiss, said the ballots are being printed and it’s too late to strike Saldanha from the list of candidates. His name and Green Party affiliation will appear on the ballot May 2 and could attract votes from people unaware of his resignation. The question then became: could the Greens collect funding for votes given in error? “If he were to get votes, the Green Party would get that money, but of course it’s up to the party to decide if it wants to take the money,” said Green spokeswoman, Debra Eindinger. “We are not going to be accepting that money.”

❚CELEBRATIONS IN DELTA

Police plan to spend $100K should Canucks go all the way Cessford has some experience in dealing with playoff celebrations. He was in charge of policing four Stanley Cup playoff runs during his time with the Edmonton police department, and has seen how quickly things can change. Cessford recounted standing one of the city’s main drags on the night of one of the final games. He said the street was deserted until the final buzzer went and the Oilers won the cup. Within minutes the street was packed with thousands of revelers. Game 4 goes tonight in Chicago and Game 5, if necessary is set for Thursday in Vancouver.

Cessford said Delta police would work with Surrey RCMP to police that area. Celebrations have also spilled out onto the streets in other areas of the community and the department will have additional resources available on game nights. “We’re not policing this to spoil anybody’s fun,” Cessford said. Jersey Girl vs.Left Turn. Boy, this is going to be a fun ride. Both of our major political parties have now completed their leadership changes, and the outcomes could not be more dif- Keith ferent and stark. BALDREY The NDP has opted to make a sharp left turn, and now are about to face off against a populist premier. Adrian Dix and Christy Clark are polar opposites in style, image and philosophy. Clark is charismatic and telegenic, while Dix is dour and not very good on television. Clark is perky and enthusiastic, and Dix is relentlessly serious and even grim at times. Clark is pro-business, with a populist touch. Dix is a class warrior, who sees electoral success occurring only if he can fashion a great divide and capture one side of it. I’ve known both Clark and Dix for more than 20 years, and can attest their public images aren’t always accurate. Dix, for example, actually does a have good sense of humour but prefers to hide it in public life while Clark, for all her communications savvy, can also be shrill and too aggressive. Nevertheless, each of them has a style and image that is well grounded in the public mind, Clark more so because she’s better known. In the past week, The Province newspaper has captured what could very well be the themes of the next election campaign. First, the paper showed a beaming Christy Clark on its cover, clad in a Vancouver Canucks jersey and holding up a hockey stick. “Jersey Girl” was the headline in largetype. The day after Dix’s win at the NDP leadership convention, The Province cover showed a victori-

to vote, but why he thinks there are a huge number of disaffected socialists out there is beyond me. Dix and his supporters point to the 1996 election win as proof that waging class warfare is a successful formula. But that misses the main reason why the NDP won that year: 15 per cent of the vote that mostly would have gone to the B.C. Liberals went to two other political parties, the Reform party and the Progressive Democratic Alliance. The NDP now desperately needs the B.C. Conservative Party, led by former long-time MP John Cummins, to grow in popularity. If the B.C. Conservatives can get to double-digits in terms of the popular vote come the next election, then Dix’s strategy may well prove to be successful. But Cummins’ party is a long way from establishing a credible presence in enough areas of the province to be a threat to the B.C. Liberals. First of all, he’s not that well known outside federal political circles and his own community of Delta. As well, he needs to find good

candidates in a lot of swing ridings, where the gap between the NDP and the B.C. Liberals has been relatively narrow and where a strong Conservative presence can pave the way for an NDP win. Cummins may well get there, but if he doesn’t provide that rightwing split, the NDP’s decision to push to the left may seal its doom. So it’s Jersey Girl versus Left Turn. Let the fun begin. ous Dix with the headline “Left Turn.” Clark could not have bought better publicity. The cover showed exactly what the NDP is up against. Something tells me putting Dix in the same jersey and having him smile at the camera simply won’t have the same effect. And the “Left Turn” reference neatly captures a deliberate shift by the NDP, and it’s one that has the B.C. Liberals rubbing their hands in glee. While Clark has a decided edge over Dix in communications, style and image, the NDP’s decision to push to the left narrows the number of voters who will vote for the party. Dix, of course, sees this in a different way. He argues that adhering to traditional democratic socialistic values will energize the party and convince its core supporters to come out and vote in greater numbers. He may well be correct, but I see little evidence to support that thesis. Dix argues that 1.5 million voters stayed home in the last election and therefore need motivation

Tired of hearing South Asian Sorry, but upscale market rants degrading Canadians in Cloverdale is a silly idea

would do a little investigating and report what is behind that apparent “Canadian” statement, perhaps she would have a truly interesting column that might increase the popularity and readership of your paper and website. In the years that I did vote and did follow the party platforms I was bombarded with promises designed to secure my vote and in fact they did work. I was gullible, I bought into it and I voted. Well, those promises weren’t kept but, of course, the politicians always had an excuse while they wasted my tax dollars on things like the Olympics and other extravagant bashes of which I had no vote – and yes, that includes every political party on the ballot today. Bottom line, I do not vote and I will not “get up off my couch and vote” until such time as one of these parties, or a new party surfaces with solid credibility. Until then, I will not vote and will not be responsible for continuing the screwing of “Canadians” by one of today’s choices. None of them deserve my vote and I will not respond to the shame you try to inflict on me in your column. Perhaps you could spend a little more time shaming politicians into delivering on their election promises and less time trying to shame Canadians into making a choice of who they want to be screwed by.

The Editor, Re: “Immigrants eager to vote, so why aren’t Canadians?” the Now, April 15. The last time I looked, one had to be a “Canadian” to vote in Canada. Harvinder Sandhu’s column demonstrates a clear example of how many immigrants see themselves even after becoming Canadian citizens. That is, not as “Canadians” like the rest of us, but rather as a distinct group different, and in many cases superior, to other Canadians. This isn’t the first time Sandhu has revealed her own bias. Last August she wrote a very insulting column entitled “South Asians value hard work,” wherein she suggested that South Asian Canadians were harder working and better at delaying gratification than non-South Asian Canadians. In her column, she advised nonSouth Asians not to envy them, or begrudge them, but to learn from them. Both Friday’s column and the one in August was nothing more than, arrogant, self-righteous drivel, with no basis in fact. It’s clear to me that if someone were to write a similar view in reverse, the intolerance/racism police would be out in full force.

The Editor, Re: “Sunday market has new ‘upscale’ vision,” the Now, April 12. Sorry to say this – what a silly idea! Cloverdale’s flea market is famous and a lot of people go there for a treasure hunt. Farmers’ markets are boring. Who is going to go there? No one from Vancouver, Burnaby, Coquitlam will visit your farmers’ market as a destination market. Do you honestly believe Surrey needs an upscale market? You won’t attract people from other cities. It’s obvious that the decision makers didn’t do their homework.

The Editor, Re: “Immigrants eager to vote, so why aren’t Canadians?” the Now, April 15. Columnist Harvinder Sandhu has tried her best to shame me as a Canadian to get off my couch and go vote. She tells university students to stop whining about education costs when they couldn’t be bothered to vote. She belittles all the excuses she has heard from Canadians for not voting. Well, as a Canadian who has lived in the Lower Mainland all my 63 years, I take offense to her column and her opinion of me, a Canadian. Sandhu would be well advised to do a more thorough investigation of her subject matters before she puts her observations to print. About the only thing she was reasonably accurate on was that “Canadians” are not eager to vote and I include myself in that observation. As a matter of fact, I am not only less eager, I don’t and will not vote – period. Sandhu needs to recognize that her column gives her a voice. Her newspaper gives the politicians a voice. Canadians do not have a voice and if she thinks voting is our voice, she is sadly mistaken. The media hammers us with every word spoken by the politicians but Sandhu seems quite satisfied to print that a Canadian responds with phrases like “what’s the use?” If this so-called columnist

Kudos to Surrey’s mayor

The Editor, I am writing to say how impressed I am that Surrey’s mayor is doing things like going to the Surrey Search and Rescue appreciation service, hosted by the Surrey Filipino Seventh Day Adventist Church. And although I do not like industrialization, I also commend Mayor Dianne Watts for wanting to bring new life to the city and change its image.

The way of the cross

At Easter, the sights and sounds of Jerusalem are particularly significant bolic bronze olive tree on a raised platform. It is here that Jesus instituted what endures as the most reverential of all Christian rituals: the offering of bread and wine as a symbol of His body and blood, sacrificed to redeem the world. The Via Dolorosa (the “Way of Sorrows”) is a narrow cobbled street. Even in biblical times it was, just as it is today, a thriving marketplace. It is a swirl of movement and colour: tourists and touts, and the whole sad spill of tawdry religious debris — stained-glass images of the Virgin and the Last Supper, vials of holy water, crucifixes, rosaries. A group of nuns flutter past like a flock of white doves, a couple of bearded Jews with long sideburns edge by me, and a hawknosed old man with smouldering eyes sits unsmiling in front of his souvenir shop. Yet in the midst of this seething commercialism, suddenly for me — not a particularly devout Anglican — the story of this tragic Man of Sorrows takes on reality. I see him, scourged, crowned with thorns, staggering up the hill to Golgotha, thin and emaciated, his face streaked with blood and sweat, his back striped with welts while carrying the cross — a heavy wooden implement to which he would be nailed to die. I am impelled to place my hand in the print of Christ’s hand in the rock — worn smooth now by others before me — and to lean against the rock where he would have stood as Simon of Cyrene helped him to carry the cross. The Church of the Holy Sepulchre is unpretentious when compared to the grandeur of St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican, but it is unequivocally the most emotionally moving site in all Christendom.

We are Margaret DEEFHOLTS standing at Now contributor a lookout point on the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem, and our guide, Carmela, with a theatrical sweep of her hand, announces, “Folks, I give you the Old City of Jerusalem!” A wag among our group says, “Really? You sure you don’t want it any more?” In the June heat-shimmer, the distant buildings within the crenelated old city wall are a jumble of toy-sized blocks, but the one building that stands out is the glittering golden Dome of the Rock shrine on Temple Mount. Sacred to both the Jews and Muslims, the foundation stone is reputedly where Abraham prepared to sacrifice his son Isaac; it is also the place from whence legend says the Prophet Mohammed ascended into heaven. Jerusalem is also at the core of Judeo-Christian tradition and, standing here looking at the Holy City, I find myself shedding adult scepticism and being drawn back into childhood’s simplicity of faith. Below our lookout and partly hidden by trees is the Basilica of Agony where Jesus once prayed: “O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me.” He was a sorrowful human being then, not the transcendent “Christ” figure he would later become. A little further down the hill is the Garden of Gethsemane, marking the scene of Judas’s kiss of betrayal. We visit the “upper room” where Jesus and his disciples celebrated their last Passover meal together. Located over the ancient tomb of King David, this room, built at the time of the Crusaders, has replaced the original chamber. It is almost stark in its simplicity: a Gothic vaulted ceiling, stairs leading to an inner room, a carved marble niche and a sym-

Glittering altar covers the crucifixion site est of shrines — the Chapel of the Holy Sepulchre containing Jesus’ tomb and a marble slab which marks the spot where the risen Christ emerged triumphantly three days after he was crucified. The line up of pilgrims, many with their eyes closed in prayer as they wait to enter the doorway, is faith at its most awe-inspiring. The life and death of Jesus of Nazareth is indisputably the most revered as well as the most controversial story of all time. For every cynic who calls it a tale

A glittering altar covers the actual spot where the crucifixion took place, and a woman kneels to touch the sacred Rock through a small aperture at the base of the altar. She rises and wipes her eyes she turns to leave. To the left of the main entrance is the Rotunda, and leading off this is a small entrance into the holi-

Catch life when it’s good OnHealth

One effective parenting approach can make each of us happier if we apply it to our daily lives. A great strategy we used when our kids were small was to catch them being good. We would Davidicus smile and compliment WONG them when they did something thoughtful, generous or kind. Not only did this reinforce good behaviour but it made our home a more positive place. Each day, we saw the best in them, and I’m sure this helped them see the best in themselves. Parents shouldn’t underestimate the power of their words. Long after childhood, positive or negative statements continue a conscious and subconscious dialogue that shades the thoughts and feelings of grown children. Obviously, put-downs and negative generalizations about character and ability can erode a child’s budding self-esteem with a cascade of emotional and relationship issues downstream, trickling into every aspect of that child’s future life. Less obvious is the effect of excessive criticism that is not balanced by positive reinforcement. It is like the difference between optimism and pessimism. Is your cup half full or half empty? Is your kid halfgood or half-bad? The reality of the present is exactly the same, but the difference is in our outlook and our behaviour. If we see more of the positive, we can make the most of it and bring more into the future. As parents seizing the best in our children, we become more positive and optimistic. We can leverage our children’s strengths to work with their challenges. We

create a more appreciative atmosphere for the whole family, and this will shape our children’s evolving mindscape. Now we all know that our very lives are not smooth sailing. We each get a mixed bag of good and bad moments in each day. Even on your bad days, when it seems as if everything is going wrong, and during those long stretches in your life when you’re coping with loss or overwhelmed with stress, there will be moments when life does give you a break. The light turns green just before you reach the intersection. The last pair of shoes is just your size. You get to the parking meter before the time has run out. You find a parking spot with an hour left on the meter. You get a day off and the sun is shining. A stranger smiles at you. Another driver lets you merge into his lane. You hear your favourite song in an elevator. No one else is in the elevator so you can sing and dance to it if you want. The elevator doors open before you have a chance to wait and you make it to your floor without a stop. You run into an old friend you haven’t seen in a long time. These great things don’t happen all the time but some good or great things do happen to you each and every day. When you’re having a bad day or passing through a tough stretch when life hasn’t been treating you so well, you may not be primed to notice these little breaks. Your happiness exercise for today: Make a point of catching life when it’s good to you. I guarantee you’ll notice that you’re day will go better than you thought. You’ll be happier. Your life will be happier. Dr. Davidicus Wong is a physician at the PrimeCare Medical Centre.

After Easter, what to do with eggs?

Introducing

OnCooking

A tradition in my family has always been the customary ritual of decorating eggs for Easter. As far back as history can take us, the egg seems to have always been a symbol of continuing life and Chef DEZ resurrection. Therefore, it was natural to decorate and give them out as gifts for part of the feasting after the solemn fast of Lent. Although it is now more contemporary to exchange chocolate or candy eggs, many families still carry out the historic practice of using real eggs. However, what is to become of all the excess hard-boiled eggs, other than the habitual egg sandwich? A quick and simple idea is to crumble them to garnish salads. This not only adds bright colours to the salad, but is also is a fantastic way to add additional protein. Crumbled eggs are also vivid garnishes for stir-fries or around the outer edge of a platter of rice. Add a splash of freshly chopped parsley over the rice to transform the bland grains into something more attractive. The crumbled mix of white and yellow is much more appealing to the eye than two-toned slices of egg. Egg slices are better used along with spinach and cheese rolled inside the middle of a pork loin for a stuffed roast that is extraordinary. Egg slices can also be layered in many different casseroles. There are a variety of hard-boiled egg recipes, including egg and cheese dips, pickled eggs and many versions

of deviled eggs. For example, try combining the yolk mixture for deviled eggs with smoked salmon before stuffing it back into the egg-white halves, for a delicious change. My favourite hard-boiled egg recipe is Scotch Eggs. This Scottish recipe is prepared by encasing hard-boiled eggs with sausage meat. They are then rolled in a mixture of cracker crumbs and fresh chopped parsley, and baked in the oven. Once cooled, they are sliced into quarters. Dear Chef Dez, I hate making hard-boiled eggs. I find it difficult to peel them without having huge chunks of the cooked white staying attached to the shell pieces. Also, they always have that “green ring” around the yolk. Are there any tricks to help me? — Janet C., Maple Ridge Dear Janet, First, when selecting eggs to boil, choose older eggs rather than the freshest ones. This is because over a period of time, more air develops between the shell and the shell membrane, making it easier to peel. Also try rolling the cooked egg on the counter with some gentle pressure to makes cracks all over the surface, and then peel under cool running water. The “green ring” indicates a chemical reaction between the iron in the yolk and the sulfur in the white. This happens when the egg is either cooked too long, or at too high of a temperature. Try adjusting your cooking time and plunge them into an ice water bath immediately to stop the cooking process. dez@chefdez.com

Three Michael BOOTH Surrey/North Sports Editor Delta teams remain alive after a wild opening round of the annual men’s soccer Provincial Cup tournament for the top club sides in B.C. By the time the dust settled Sunday night, all three premier league champions had been eliminated, creating a wide-open race for the right to represent B.C. in the national championships in October. ❚ In Cloverdale Saturday, twotime Vancouver Metro Soccer League premier champion Surrey United Firefighters saw their Provincial Cup dreams evaporate with a 2-0 loss to visiting Columbus (VMSL). The Vancouver side finished in third place in the regular season but took advantage of ineffective play by the Firemen to pull off the upset. Columbus opened the scoring midway through the opening half before netting an insurance marker in the 85th minute. “It was a disappointing result but at the end of the day, they were the better side,” said Surrey coach Niall Thompson. “They worked harder than us and they looked like they wanted it more than us. A lot of guys are playing their last season for the club and to go out in the first round after all we achieved, it’s very disappointing.” ❚ Meanwhile, at the same time six miles to the southwest, Fraser Valley Soccer League premier champion Peace Arch United was knocked out of Provincial Cup contention with a 2-1 loss to Delta United (VMSL). Delta took advantage of some sloppy play by the hosts to grab a 2-0 lead before the game was 20 minutes old. Phil Lensky opened

the scoring for Delta and was the architect of their second goal as well when his shot bounced off the goal post only to be knocked back into the net by a Peace Arch defender. Peace Arch cut the gap to a single goal 20 minutes into the second half when Ryan Horvath’s penalty shot was stopped by Delta keeper Drew Smiley only to have the rebound knocked home by Scott Barling. Peace Arch pressed hard for the equalizer but the closest they would come was a pair of shots clanging off the crossbar. “We weren’t good — there’s no other way to say it than we weren’t good,” said Peace Arch coach Dave Hleucka. “We got ourselves in a hole with a couple of turnovers and next thing you know, we’re behind 2-0. We got one back but then they defended so well we couldn’t get the second goal that we needed.” According to coach Steve Millar, Delta’s lineup is the healthiest it has been since the calendar changed at the end of December. After a torrid start to the VMSL premier season, a spate of injuries led to a second half swoon for Delta. “We won our last league game, and that helped us, and now this one gives us a big boost,” Millar said. “We’re finally getting healthy again and to be honest, we were missing a lot of guys when we struggled in February and March. You can only band-aid a team together for so long but Saturday we had all 11 guys in the lineup for the first time since before Christmas and that made a big difference.” ❚ The third league champion

continued from page 21 to go down in the first round of the Provincial Cup was Vancouver Island champion Bays United who were ousted 2-1 by Newton’s ICST Pegasus (VMSL) for the second consecutive year. After falling behind 10 in the 20th minute, the Horsemen answered 10 minutes later with a goal of their own when Azad Palani converted a hard pass from Sahil Sandhu. Pegasus then took over

the lead five minutes into the second half with a rocket of a direct kick by Niko Marcina from 25 yards out. “That was an amazing shot; a real cracker of a goal,” marvelled Pegasus coach Rob Reed. “That sent us on our way and it put them back on their heels. We took over after that because we dominated and controlled ball but were unlucky not to score one or two other goals. We deserved an insurance goal but we didn’t put

them away.” The Punjab Hurricanes (VMSL) are Surrey/North Delta’s third quarter-finalist after they advanced with a 4-2 demolition of the Athletic Club of B.C. (FVSL) Saturday evening. The Hurricanes put their disappointment at being relegated to the first division aside and took their frustrations out on ACBC. Bobby Jhutty led the charge with three goals while Pami Birring netted the game winner early in the second half.

“This was a nice win for us because it gets the memory of what happened against Columbus (a 5-0 loss in their final premier game) out of our heads,” said Hurricanes manager Billy Dhaliwal. “We definitely did not want the bitter taste of that loss to be our last meaningful game. It was good to get some positive momentum again.” The premier teams will take the Easter weekend off before resuming play on the weekend of April 30.

Demand for Graphic Design Technology Specialists

Spurs New CDI College Program Surrey program prepares grads to use advanced design software Technologies used in the graphic design industry have become increasingly complex over the past several decades. With new design software emerging all the time, employers are demanding specialists who can stay on top of trends and technologies. CDI College’s Graphic Design Technology Specialist program trains students to become experts with industry-standard software like Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, Fireworks, and After Effects at its Surrey campus. It teaches students to use industry-standard design software applications, create digital images, and develop editing and processing skills. Students become experts in using technology to digitally manipulate photos, layout designs with QuarkXpress and Adobe InDesign, create website prototypes and application interfaces, and produce interactive digital media projects, including motion graphics. Students in this program are trained for roles in multimedia and digital support, such as visual information/ multimedia specialists,

web and graphic design specialists, design software specialists, or other roles in the digital media and graphics field. “CDI College continues to meet the increased demand for skills-based training in British Columbia,” says Dr. Bohdan Bilan, Vice President of Academics for CDI College. “This program was developed with input from professionals within the graphic design and multimedia industries, which means our students learn to master the most relevant tools, techniques and technologies used in the job market today.” A variety of employers are seeking employees with specialized expertise who can bring their unique perspective to all digital design projects, who are good at multi-tasking, and who have strong problem-solving skills within and across applications. CDI College’s Graphic Design Technology Specialist diploma program graduates excel in all of these areas. “This program meets the demands of the growing multimedia design industry in British Columbia and across Canada,” says Randy Cox, President and CEO, CDI College. “Increasingly, employers are demanding workers who have the specialized software skills this program teaches.” CDI College offers the Graphic Design Technology Specialist program at its Surrey and Abbotsford campuses. These two communities are both growing rapidly and offer expanding employment opportunities in a number of fields. Both are close to the hustle and bustle of Vancouver, but provide a quieter alternative to the big city. CDI College’s Surrey and

Abbotsford campuses are easily accessible by the public transit system or by car. CDI College is Canada’s largest career training institute with 19 campuses in five provinces across the country. For more than 40 years, CDI College has been a leading career training institution helping thousands of students achieve career goals and aspirations. The college offers dozens of specialized diploma programs in the fields of business, technology and health care, which feature realworld training from experienced instructors, small class sizes, flexible schedules and career placement assistance. Programs are created with industry input, ensuring curricula is current, relevant and practical. Are you interested in building a career in multimedia and digital support? Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

❚ VAISAKHI CELEBRATIONS ❚HISTORY OF SIKHISM

In the dawn of 1699, Sikhism’s 10th teacher, Guru Gobind Rai sent out word to the faithful to gather at his temporal seat of Anandpur Sahib, Punjab. Vaisakhi that year was to be a unique affair for the time had come to crystallize the practices and beliefs of the Sikh faith. As hundreds of thousands gathered around this holy place, Guru Gobind Rai called for five volunteers, whom he baptized. After initiating the five “beloved ones” into a new order of soldier-saints, the Guru knelt before them and requested that they initiate him in a similar manner. The Guru declared that the surname Singh, which means lion, must be carried by every Sikh. He then pronounced that all Sikh women will carry the surname Kaur, which means princess. He then changed his name to Guru Gobind Singh. With that edict, Guru Gobind Singh Ji created the Khalsa — the order of the initiated Sikhs — giving the community a unique identity which stresses a life dedicated to principles of spirituality, morality, equality and justice. Although Sikhs draw inspiration from the lives of all 10 Gurus of their faith, at this time of year — which celebrates the birth of Khalsa in the month of Vaisakhi — Sikhs pay special homage to the life and teachings of Guru Gobind Singh Ji, who is a beacon of inspiration and hope to the world. Vaisakhi today is known all over the world as a Sikh celebration, but not many

know its roots stem from a harvest festival that nurtured religious freedom and community giving, said Dr. Bhupinder Sachdev, a practicing physician in Surrey and expert on the Sikh religion. “Vaisakhi is the name of the festival in India for harvesting the crop ... It began before Sikhism started.” The festival also provided a holiday for all religions across India, when people would gather in prayer to celebrate the harvest, he says. “Quite a few religions actually began on Vasaikhi, including Buddhism, but I don’t think many Indo-Canadians are aware of this,” says Dr. Sachdev. Guru Gobind Singh chose the festival day of Vaisakhi as the occasion to transform the Sikhs into the Khalsa, a family of soldier saints, he explains. “That’s how Sikhs are connected,” says Dr. Sachdev. “Sikhism emphasizes unity, equality, love and prayer for the kindness of God.” Vaisakhi is also the first day of the Sikh calendar, and has the same significance for the Sikh community as Christmas has for Christians or Chinese New Year to people of Chinese origin. “Once a year the Sikh communities around the world celebrate with everyone, and get together to pray and honour the Sikh values,” says Dr. Sachdev. “We are all supposed to give charity to members of society most in need, and so we also help those who are ill or in need of education.” — Postmedia News Service

Dr. Shinder Purewal

A Strong Voice for Surrey North Surrey North needs a Member of Parliament who will speak up for his constituents, not an MP who is silent.

Dr. Shinder Purewal stands up for issues that matter most to you. He is not afraid to oppose the Harper Conservatives plan to waste more than $30 billion on fighter jets and many billions more on corporate tax cuts, while cutting vital services that our community relies upon.

Dr. Shinder Purewal is a strong voice for the voters of Surrey North. On May 2, make your voice heard too. SURREY NORTH 8910 Scott Road, Surrey BC V3V 4B4 Phone: 604-572-5746 shinderpurewal.liberal.ca Authorized by the official agent for Dr. Shinder Purewal

Dr. Purewal is listening to people and responding to their concerns. He has knocked on more than 7000 doors in the past three months and knows that the priorities of the voters of Surrey North are health care, jobs and access to affordable education, housing and child care. The Liberal Party will make these investments in opportunities for all Canadians while reducing the deficit.

Surrey’s big annual Vaisakhi parade is set for this Saturday, April 23, with road closures in place from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The parade will begin at approximately 9:30 a.m. at Gurdwara Sahib Dasmesh Darbar, located at 12885 85th Ave., and will conclude there at approximately 4 p.m. To facilitate parade activities, area residents and businesses should be advised there will be road closures, traffic disruptions, restricted access and temporary parking restrictions. Traffic controls will be in place beginning at 7:30 a.m. until approximately 5:00 PM, or until police deem the route is safe to be opened to vehicular traffic. Access to 128th Street and road sections along the parade route will be impacted most significantly. Increased delays may be expected for travel through and within the area between 72nd Avenue to 88th Avenue, and Scott Road to King George Highway. More details about the event can be found online at surreyvaisakhiparade.ca. One of the most preeminent aspects of the Vaisakhi parade is the tradition of celebrating the harvest through the giving away of food to attendees. Both participants and onlookers are treated to a wide range of free food items, prepared by hundreds of local citizens and distributed without charge to those along the parade route. From traditional Indian foods and sweets to more mainstream food offerings, parade goers are treated to a wide range of goodies.
