UPSET: Cadman booted for NDP’s Jasbir Sandhu
SUKH’S LAMENT: Lib’s balanced vision is gone
Talk about a pressure cooker. The battle for Surrey North went to down to the wire as Conservative incumbent Dona Cadman and NDP challenger Jasbir Sandhu slugged it out. It all started out slowly, with a few campaign workers and reporters hanging around Cadman’s election HQ waiting for news. Max Stuart worked on Cadman’s campaign and regaled reporters with a story. “You wanna know the last time I voted Liberal? It was for a guy who said he was gonna bring the party into the 20th century. Know who it was? Pierre Elliott Trudeau. Never made that mistake again.” The small gathering celebrated as it became apparent the Tories were going to have a majority in Parliament. The jubilation continued as the first Surrey North polls reported. Cadman came on with the early lead, but Sandhu soon began to creep ahead. Cries of, “Yes, yes! We’ve got it!” changed to groans of, “Oh, no! No!” as the New Democrat moved into the lead. Sandhu’s lead grew from 50 votes at 8:25 p.m. to 111 votes 10 minutes later, eliciting a “Boo!” from someone at the back of the room. His lead continued to grow as more and more polls reported.

In fact, she only arrived just before 11 p.m. to concede defeat and thank her people. Sandhu finished out in front by about 1,400 votes and the huge crowd at the local NDP election night headquarters in a Newton banquet hall began to party. They had won Surrey North. Sukh Dhaliwal has been orange crushed. New Democrat MP-elect Jinny Sims has retired Newton-North Delta’s two-term Liberal MP Sukh Dhaliwal – the sole local vestige of the one-time “natural governing party” – by 15,413 votes to 14,510. Tory candidate Mani Fallon came in a close third, with 14,434 votes. Sims, a former president of the B.C. Teachers’ Federation, praised her campaign team. “This is the fruit of a campaign team that is truly amazing,” Sims said, as she celebrated her winning night at Newton’s Bollywood Banquet Hall. “This team truly reflected the diversity of Newton-North Delta,” she said. “It’s been amazing, the energy, the teamwork.” Dhaliwal’s camp was only a couple blocks away, at Newton’s Grand Taj Banquet Hall. Despite facing impending personal defeat, Dhaliwal seemed more preoccupied with the national battering his party has been dealt. “Whatever happens in this riding, more importantly now, it is very disappointing to see that the balanced vision is gone and two extreme visions have taken over this country,” Dhaliwal lamented. “Now the Liberal Party has a long journey ahead to ensure we are able to

It’s a long road for the Liberal Party to come back.” As for his loss, he said, “I graciously accept the will of the people of NewtonNorth Delta.” Dhaliwal was first elected in 2006. In 2008, he was re-elected with 16,390 votes to Tory candidate Pandher’s 13,969 while the NDP’s Teresa Townsley came in third with 11,804 votes. – By Tom Zytaruk tzytaruk@thenownewspaper.com

HIEBERT: ‘I’m just so relieved for the country’
GREWAL RETURNS: MP wins fourth straight term
There were plenty of surprises across the country on election night, but very little has changed in the riding of South Surrey-White Rock-Cloverdale. One of the safest Conservative seats west of the Rockies remains in Tory blue as incumbent MP Russ Hiebert was returned to Ottawa by a healthy margin for a fourth time in seven years. Hiebert expressed amazement at what happened at the polls across the country and said the results were exciting. “It’s an incredible night,” he said. “It’s hard to have imagined this sort of a sea change in Canadian politics. “I’m just so relieved for the country that we have some stability and the opportunity now for us to do what we promised we would do – bring forward our commitments for creating jobs and growth; following through on our commitments for criminal justice reforms and even to the point of getting an elected senate. These are all part of our commitments and now we have the opportunity to implement them.” In his riding of South Surrey-White Rock-Cloverdale, there was never much doubt about who would win, but the big surprise came in who finished second. As in most ridings across Canada, the NDP came on strong with candidate Susan Keeping supplanting the Liberals as the

Staub was quick to praise Keeping for her hard work during the campaign and, after offering congratulations to Hiebert for his success, Staub said he hoped the re-elected MP would be more accountable in the future. “I certainly pointed out some things about Mr. Hiebert and maybe he learned from it,” Staub said. “This is his opportunity to prove us wrong and that he will actually represent this community rather than just do what Mr. Harper and his cabinet tell him to do.” – By Michael Booth
MP Nina Grewal rode the wave to a Tory majority victory, winning her fourth straight term. At Now press time with 215 of 245 polls reporting, Grewal, MP for Fleetwood-Port Kells, had 21,032 votes, far ahead of her nearest rival NDP candidate Nao Fernando with 14,770 votes. Liberal contender Pam Dhanoa trailed with 6,894 votes. Jubilant campaign workers greeted Grewal with cheers and hugs when she walked into her campaign headquarters shortly after 9 p.m. as others jostled to pose for photos with her. In her victory speech, Grewal said a majority government is great news for Canadians. “This is what Canadians have always wanted, that there should be a strong Conservative government – we’ll be safe from the constant cycle of elections,” she said. Linda Bellamy, a volunteer with Grewal’s campaign, was among the celebrants. Bellamy said she sacrificed family time to work on the campaign and was “ecstatic” with the results. She’s also thrilled with a majority because it’s “exhausting preparing for an election every 18 months” or so. “We are now in power to do what we

Grewal thanked her campaign team, supporters and volunteers and pledged to serve all the constituents in her riding, promising to build on the $1.3 billion in federal funding she has secured for the riding. “Going forward I pledge to you that I will continue to work hard and represent our interests in Parliament,” she said. – By Marisa Babic

Widow suing White Rock’s Just-Cremation for incinerating body before autopsy performed WHITE ROCK – A widow is suing a White Rock-based crematorium for cremating her husband’s remains before she could have an autopsy conducted on him. Isabella Sharp claims that Pacific Crematorium Limited, doing business as Just-Cremation, last September improperly cremated her husband, Derek Sharp. She says in a civil claim filed in B.C. Supreme Court that after her husband died suddenly nearly a month after being admitted to a hospital, she arranged to have the cremation done. Sharp and other family members wanted to attend the cremation but her son-in-law asked that the cremation be

Despite the stated desire for an autopsy, to determine whether Richmond Hospital was negligent in the death, the crematorium went ahead with the cremation, without any family present, she says. The widow claims that the cremation company breached their agreement and duty of care by the actions. Sharp is seeking general, special and aggravated damages. No statement of defence has been filed. An official with the company had no immediate comment. A civil claim contains allegations that have not been proven in court. – Keith Fraser, Postmedia News

Small arsenal of guns and ammo found in storage units SURREY – Two people are facing 21 firearms-related charges after Surrey RCMP seized a small arsenal of guns and ammo from a pair of storage units in Whalley. Back in March, the Surrey RCMP’s Criminal Intelligence Section and Uniformed Gang Task Force officers stopped the pair in a car, on outstanding warrants, and found two loaded handguns. One of the suspects arrested was Dean Anderson, 41, who was recently listed among B.C.’s Top 10 Most Wanted, and Kathleen Slater, 21. “As a result of those arrests and further intelligence, investigators were led to two storage units,” Surrey RCMP Insp. Wade Lymburner said. He wouldn’t reveal if police believe the guns were taken from

School district unveils new look
Police identify Surrey murder victim as Manbir Singh Kajla
New digs call for a new logo, according to officials with the Surrey school district. Staff is in the process of moving into the $29-million District Education Centre in the Whalley area, bringing together under one roof staff and departments from seven separate buildings scattered throughout the city. Designed by Surrey-based thornleyHAYNE Creative Communications, the new logo cost $16,000.
SURREY – Police continue to hunt for the gunman who shot Manbir Singh Kajla dead in front of his wife in Newton on Wednesday night. Kajla, 30, of Surrey, was gunned down when he got out of the couple’s Lexus to confront another driver following a minor fenderbender in the 6900-block of 128th Street, just after 11 p.m. Police have not yet identified a suspect and are seeking witnesses. – The Now
School board chair Laurae McNally said the move into the new facility is an ideal time to refresh the district’s brand with a new emblem. To save money, the existing stationary and other items stamped with the old logo will be used up. – The Now

Dix may be poised to repeat his mentor’s mistakes New NDP leader Adrian Dix is trying to establish his own style of leadership, and to demonstrate the once badly Keith BALDREY fractured NDP caucus is over its internal strife. But his restructuring of caucus assignments has raised questions about whether that internal tension is truly gone. I’ve picked up some serious grumbling by some key New Democrats unhappy that Dix essentially shut leadership rival Mike Farnworth (and Farnworth’s supporters) from pivotal caucus positions. Instead, Dix installed MLAs who supported either his leadership or that of John Horgan, who is perhaps closer to Dix on a personal level than other MLAs. Of course, Dix has every right to appoint whoever he wants to various posts (although some positions, such as caucus chair, are elected by the caucus). But one can’t help contrasting his treatment of Farnworth with Premier Christy Clark’s handling of her chief leadership rival, Kevin Falcon. Clark appointed Falcon finance minister and deputy premier. Dix, on the other hand, removed Farnworth from the pivotal position of Opposition house leader and also moved him out of the public safety critic position. Farnworth garnered widespread praise for his performance in both roles. As critic, he actually convinced the government to bring in legislation that he was specifically calling for (such as new laws dealing with body armour and armoured cars) to fight organized gangs. And Farnworth’s removal as house leader carries with it a hefty personal financial cost as well. He

❚POLITICS
And given that his campaign signed up more than 5,000 members of the South Asian community in Surrey and its environs (representing half of his final ballot tally) Dix can hardly argue he has a strong, broad base of support throughout the province or the party. One of Dix’s political mentors, of course, is former premier Glen Clark, for whom he worked first as ministerial assistant and then as chief of staff in the premier’s office. I’ve always thought one of Clark’s big mistakes as premier was putting only those people who shared his class warrior views in key positions in government, either in the caucus or among staffers. As a result, whenever he made a mistake, the only people he would turn to were those who reinforced his views, rather than challenging them or changing them. It will be interesting to see if Dix makes the same mistake in the months ahead. ••• Dealing with his caucus is one thing, but Dix already seems to have more potentially serious problems with a much larger group: the B.C. business community. Just after he won the NDP leadership, I was a panelist (along with former NDP premier Dan Miller, long-time civil servant Chris
Trumpy and the co-chair of the premier’s leadership bid, Sharon White) at a breakfast gathering in Vancouver to discuss the shifting political landscape. More than 100 people – mostly business leaders, political consultants and industry group representatives – attended and they seemed to share a uniformly negative view of Dix, almost to the point of actually fearing him. Based on that breakfast talk, I think the NDP can forget about any hope of successfully “reaching out” to the business community. Then again, being the class warrior that he is, I doubt Dix has any plans to try that approach anyway. Keith Baldrey is chief political correspondent for Global B.C. Keith.Baldrey@globalnews.ca

now loses the $20,000 stipend that comes with the job. Dix, of course, denies there’s any payback going on here. He told me he considers Farnworth’s appointment as health critic his key appointment and insists Farnworth is a great friend. But there’s a tiresome routine that comes with being health critic. Dix was the former health critic, of course, and he started out well in that post. But over time, his criticisms became relentlessly similar and all echoed the refrain that all problems in the system could be fixed by simply putting more and more money into it. Farnworth would be wise to steer clear of that money trap, and focus on such issues as a looming shortage of doctors, nurses and technologists (if you think MRI wait times are too long now, just wait a few years when there are fewer and fewer people properly trained to run such machines). The grumbling over the treatment of Farnworth and his supporters will likely fade away rather quickly. But Dix should remember he wasn’t the choice of an overwhelming majority of party members. His victory margin – 52 to 48 per cent – was exactly the same as the premier’s margin. He had fewer caucus endorsements than either Farnworth or Horgan.

Column on politics bang on The Editor, Re: “Why we need some serious political reform in Canada,” the Now, April 29. Your front-page column was bang on the money. Michael Booth did a great job of summing up my thoughts exactly. Perhaps the paper can continue to advocate for changes to our form of voting and representation. The U.K. is having a referendum next month on changing “first past the post” voting. I haven’t seen any coverage of this in any national or local newspaper. In my riding (White Rock-South Surrey-Cloverdale) I have often said that a monkey could run for the Conservatives and she would get elected. I feel my vote is absolutely worthless here, unless I want to vote for a monkey. It is funny how we favour the uprisings in Libya, Tunisia and Egypt because those countries don’t have democracy. What makes people in Canada think that, between elections, we have democracy here?
Journalists, keep ’em honest Tired of political spin The Editor, Re: “Why we need some serious political reform in Canada,” the Now, April 29. Now, will the Now keep with the honesty of Michael Booth’s writing? We, the electorate, must hold them accountable, but it is indeed time for journalists to be journalists.
David Soul, Surrey
Whole system is a farce The Editor, Re: “Why we need some serious political reform in Canada,” the Now, April 29. How I have yearned for somebody to say this. For many years while working in Ottawa (not government) I would spend my afternoons off once a week in the House and watching this charade week after week – and that was when the Liberals were in power. Party did not matter as they were all the same. The whole thing is a farce and they have managed to convince the sheep that it is democracy. Well done Michael Booth – it will not persuade anybody, but still it had to be said.
The Editor, Re: “Why we need some serious political reform in Canada,” the Now, April 29. I have disliked party politics since I was old enough to vote. I am tired of the spin and the complete lack of accountability. Only once in the past 40 years have I voted for someone, instead of against. I was told I wasted my vote because I voted for an independent instead of one of the parties. Funny, I thought we were supposed to vote for the people we think would represent us. Hopefully, the people in this country will wake up and elect people who will do more than make sure they are elected again.
Chris Hale, Surrey
Broken system is frightening
The Editor, Re: “Why we need some serious political reform in Canada,” the Now, April 29. Thank you for your well expressed thoughts about our broken democracy. It is frightening indeed. One question remains – what can we do to fix our federal government? We need more honest viewpoints. They are very rare.

The Editor, Re: “Why we need some serious political reform in Canada,” the Now, April 29. What an excellent column! Michael Booth is the first member of the fifth estate who seems to make the obvious statement. Further to our completely dysfunctional form of democracy, we are blessed with a bloated House of Commons. Why do we need 308 MPs? The U.S. – at some 10 times the population – gets by with only 435 congressmen and 100 elected senators while we provide a geriatric day care for old political hacks in our appointed Senate of some 105. The media is – and has been – very remiss in not asking these types of questions. Why does P.E.I. with a population of 140,000 have four MPs while we in NewtonNorth Delta with a population of 120,000 have only one MP? Are they four times better Canadians then we are? Trouble is, given the status quo, Newton-North Delta will be given three more MPs to even it up rather than reduce P.E.I. to one MP. The whole system sucks, right down to its non-confidence revolving door election machine. I have seen estimates that an MP/senator costs us more than $2 million each per year, considering salary, expenses, office staff and pensions. If the House was reduced to even the current majority level, 155, and the Senate was an elected body of some 25 or so we could as

Living James Dacey, 17, was one of two lucky students who got to ride in the RCMP helicopter Air 1 during this year’s RCMP Youth Academy. Dacey, who is in Grade 11, said the eight-day program has reinforced his desire to become a police officer himself when he graduates from high school. ❚PHOTO/courtesy of the RCMP
Flying high in Air 1 He’s wanted to be Carolyn a police officer for a COOKE Staff Reporter long time. “Probably since I can remember,” said James Dacey, 17. And in fact, that desire helped brought him back to school nearly a year after he had dropped out and went to work in construction. There, while the money was nice, he said he found it tiring. “I hurt my back pretty bad,” Dacey said, which laid him up for three days and gave him a lot to think about. He realized he could very well end up doing work like this for the rest of his life, and just keep on hurting himself too, and never feel happy with it. With that, he returned to
school, this time to an alternate school in North Surrey. He heard about the RCMP Youth Academy and decided to apply. One physical and interview later, he was in. The academy, which runs for eight days in Chilliwack each year, has 50 students drawn from Surrey, Coquitlam, Burnaby, Richmond and North Vancouver. They got up each morning at 5 a.m., were out running by 5:30, after breakfast they’d do classroom work, such as learning about the criminal code, followed by scenarios or visits from various RCMP teams. His favourite was the force helicopter, Air 1, because he was one of two students chosen to go up for a ride, although Dacey said
he needed a bit of encouragement to overcome his fear of heights to have his first ever flight. “That was amazing,” he said. Other highlights included a visit by a police dog team and Emergency Response, both of whom showed off their particular techniques. The scenarios – where the officers set up a role-playing situation and the students work in teams to diffuse the situation – were an eye-opener for the Grade 11 student. “At first it was harder than I thought,” said Dacey. Not only would the students have to figure out what was happening and calm down the person, but they would have to be
very clear in their communication with their partner. Dacey credited his months of working with different people with helping him get the hang of it. “For the most part, it’s tricky.” His best advice was to not be too technical, don’t lie to the agitated person, and above all, act like a person. The academy held its graduation ceremony Friday afternoon. Now that it’s over, Dacey said he’s more keen on a career in policing than ever. “It’s given me more of a drive.” And he has a much better idea of what to expect in his chosen career, too, thanks to some hands on experience. ccooke@thenownewspaper.com

mix of drum, cymbals and Javanese oboe keeps the pace. Starting at a slow rhythm, the music quickens as the minutes of each bout pass. By the five-minute mark, the instruments and crowd are in an agitated harmony; by the eight-minute mark they crescendo to a synchronized fervor that climaxes at the bell. Both appear to collapse for a moment of exhausted reality before the cycle begins again. In that brief respite, however, there is frantic negotiation at the sidelines. Gambling may be illegal in Thailand, but judging from all the sleight-of-hand activity between spectators, you can bet your Baht that Muay Thai makes its own rules. It also has a distinct heritage than spans some 2,000 years. Once called the martial art of the kings — princes have been known to fight until death for the throne — Muay Thai is often regarded as the most potent martial art in the world. It enables the slender, nimble Thai frame to impart lethal force, and while the Thai army still favours the sport as part of its training, commercialized Thai boxing has evolved into a multi-layered discipline that combines brute physicality with balletic grace, ancient ritual with fierce competition and, sometimes, celebrity status to rival Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan. Events are a big part of Thai social life, and as Thailand’s national sport, there are Muay Thai fighters and champions in all 76 provinces. Fights are staged almost every day of the year with March 17 (National Muay Thai Day) set aside for special celebrations. In Bangkok alone, there are more than 1,000 gyms where nak muays (prospective boxers) dream of fighting in one of the city’s two venerated stadia: the modern Lumphini Stadium and the time-honoured Ratchadamnoen Stadium. The latter is akin to a battle-weary, cylindrical bunker lined with steeply raked concrete benches that ascend the circular, concrete wall. These are the third-class seats — 500 Baht, or about $16. VIPs pay a shade more for a freestanding blue plastic chair, and high-flying devotees shell out about 2,000 Bhat ($63) to float around the ringside, catch-
ing the action up close and personal. As might be expected from such an ancient art, there are many taboos that dictate the ceremonial side of Muay Thai. For example, each boxer enters the arena crowned with the mongkhon headdress and garlands, as well as prajiad armlets on each bicep which sometimes secret away protective Buddhist tablets. Some boxers even brandish a magical tattoo. Before fighting commences, boxers will offer a wai (prayer-like salutation) to all four sides of the ring and then warm up with devotional movements of the wai khru rum muay. Once garlands and mongkhon are removed, the scene transforms into exhilarating hand-tohand combat with poetic names like Star Gatherer, Crocodile Tail thrash or Coiled Dragon’s Tail. Fighters jab with their elbows, thud with their knees, hammer with footthrusts and punch with their fists. Some moves involve acrobatic pirouettes, 180-degree turns, flying jumps or curlingbackward leg swings. A gra-dode sork launches both feet off the ground to chop an elbow onto the top of the opponent’s head. The khao loy requires a running jump up to chest height so the lead knee can clobber an unwitting chin. The yiep dhi sees one fighter step into the bent leg of his rival and swing the other leg to wallop an undefended ear. All the while, traditional music ricochets off the walls — ever faster and ever louder through each progressive minute of every round. And now that a kinder version has become the latest fat-burning regime among Hollywood circles, Muay Thai is mainstreaming around the world. The sport is now Thailand’s most internationally recognized export after Thai food and Thai massage — though nothing beats experiencing all three in Thailand itself. Ex-mistress here from U.K. to help local women ‘break free’
If you’re a woman having an affair with a married man, you might want to check out sessions held in Surrey this week. So-called “infidelity and relationship analyst” Sarah J. Symonds is here from Britain to host confidential workshops to help women end relationships with married men. Symonds’ free “Mistresses Anonymous” workshops, also to be held in Vancouver and Burnaby this week, are billed as the first of their kind in Canada. The workshops in Surrey are sched-
uled for Thursday, May 5 at a secret location, to ensure confidentiality. Those interested in attending must register online before they’re directed to the workshop site. On her website (www.mistressesanonymous.com), Symonds says she knows all too well the heartaches and frustration that comes from living a double life as a girlfriend of a married man. “That’s why I’ve made it my mission to help the sisters of the mistress-hood break free. You deserve so much more
than a man who builds his life on lies. “I’ve worked with other mistresses from London to Los Angeles, and I’d like to offer you a safe haven, a place to meet other women like you and an environment where you won’t be judged.” Symonds, an author and broadcaster, has appeared on TV with Oprah Winfrey, Dr. Phil, Larry King Live, The View and other shows. Her first book, Having an Affair? A Handbook for the Other Woman, caused a stir when published in 2007.

from Germany in the early 1930s and they worked the land as farmers in Saskatchewan. Stories of the brutally cold winters, and how most of their meals came from their crops and the pigs that they raised, always kept me captivated. For meals, creative simplicity was always the focus as we transformed everyday ingredients into something incredible. Some of the most memorable foods for me that stimulate thoughts of my childhood are rice pudding, cherry soup and sugared milk bread slices. Thank you, Mom, for the laughter, the tears, the guidance and the years. You are always on my mind. ❚ For Mother’s Day this year, dads should consider helping the kids prepare breakfast in bed for their mom. Along with her favourite breakfast, add a cloth napkin, candles, small vase with a flower, her favourite section of the newspaper, a handwritten note tied with a ribbon, a side of toast cut into heart shapes and all the extras, like coffee, tea, juice and ice water. Most important, don’t forget to garnish her breakfast. Mint leaves with slices of colourful fruit works very well, or add a sprinkle of cinnamon and icing sugar, if appropriate. If serving juice, it can also be beautifully garnished with a slice of orange on the rim of a wine glass and frozen cranberries as ice cubes. dez@chefdez.com

Mother’s Day is approaching, and it’s not only a day to spend time with your mom, grandmother or wife, but also to remember and reminisce. As a child, my Mom Chef was the biggest influence DEZ on my life and upbringing. Being a single parent of four children for many years, she persevered through many of life’s obstacles to ensure a suitable developmental environment for all of us. There are many examples of her dedication to motherhood, but the fire of culinary aspirations that she fueled within me is something I am forever grateful for. Ever since I can remember, she was always there to offer me a spot beside her in the kitchen. While other boys my age were involved in various sports activities, my idea of a team was right there in our home. Still to this day, I can almost hear the scuffing of the old wooden footstool as I dragged it across the floor. There I would stand upon the flour-dusted crevices as she secured my apron, readying me for our next culinary adventure. Many of our kitchen conversations were a journey back in time. Descriptive adventures of what life was like when she was a child were what I loved most. Her parents immigrated to Canada

Vancouver-based artist and master knitter Julie Pongrac is at Surrey Museum Thursday to spread word about “Knitting as Voice,” May 5 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the facility in Cloverdale. She’ll teach others how to give knitting a West Coast feel using fibre from animals such as llamas and dyes from local lichens, mushrooms and other vegetation. Pongrac is known for her elegant, handknit works of art with a distinctive West Coast look. She’s also on a journey to locally source as many of her materials as she can — which “can be very challenging when making clothing,” she says. “However, it has the advantage of really giving place and voice to the finished piece.”
The fee is $10 for Pongrac’s “Knitting as Voice” workshop, at 17710 56A Ave. To register, call 604-592-6956.

The free May 5 session features Langley-based artist Juma Wu, an abstract artist originally from Taiwan. Wu believes that the combination of two- and three-dimensional works creates an interesting dialogue between the pieces, “as if they are exchanging stories through space.” For a closer look at Wu’s work, visit www.jumawu.blog.com. —Tom Zillich

Waiting game over for senior boys teams
Sports The North Delta Huskies — including (from left) Ishmael Nunez, Jessie Bhatti, coach Gurpaul Sohal and captain Ryan Dhillon — are still ranked No. 1 heading into a provincial championship tournament ❚PHOTO/Kevin Hill that was delayed five months due to poor winter weather. not been playing at a high level in recent weeks. “It’s been pretty hard for the guys,” said Enver Creek Cougars coach Jeet Sujan. “They were really excited about going to the provincials and I felt bad for them when everything was postponed. “We’ve been running morning training sessions to try and get their cardio back up but the biggest challenge is getting them back into the proper mindset. It’ll be tough to go out and play with such and long delay, but the guys are all really anxious to get going.” Sujan added the long time delay has also affected the rosters of the participating teams. One Enver Creek player earned a red
card in club soccer and the ensuing suspension will be in effect for the high school tourney. “We had a healthy 21-man roster going into the provincials in November, but I don’t think I can say that now,” he said. “It’s hard on high school players because there are so many things going on for them. We have a couple of guys who are busy playing rugby and others have taken jobs to earn money to pay for grad. All of those things factor in when we’re trying to organize our training and preparation. “And it’s not just us either, I’m sure other teams are facing the same problems.” For the players themselves, the
long delay has been frustrating. Team chemistry that was created during the fall season has lapsed and rust is sure to be in evidence on the fields of Burnaby Lake. Still, it is the best of the best in B.C. and the players can’t wait to get started. “I’ve never had to wait so long between games like this,” said North Delta captain Ryan Dhillon. “We’re training hard though and this has given us extra time to get prepared for the tournament. We’ve tried to play some intrasquad games but it’s not the same as a real game. “We’ll find out if we’ve done enough when the tournament starts.”

The wait is Michael BOOTH almost over Sports Editor the province’s top senior boys class AAA high school soccer teams. More than five months after their last meaningful game, the teams will gather in Burnaby this week for the provincial championship tournament. The tourney was originally slated to be held back in December, but winter weather forced the City of Burnaby to close the fields. With so many teams travelling from out of town, cramming the entire event into a single day of shortened games was rejected in favour of restaging the tournament in the spring. It will now get underway Wednesday at the Burnaby Lake field complex. The team with the most to lose is the North Delta Huskies, who were ranked No. 1 in the province before the season-ending tournament was, literally, put on ice. “I tell the boys that ranking means very little,” said North Delta coach Gurpaul Sohal. “I remind them that they’re a very good soccer team that plays hard for each other, but this is not going to be easy. “They didn’t win their last game (a 1-0 loss to Langley in the Fraser Valley final) and the leadership group on this team has not forgotten that. They don’t want to leave anything to chance now and they want to go into the provincials strong and ready. For such a talented group of players, it’s good to see they have the humility to know they have to work for it.” As is the long layoff isn’t enough of a hazard, the teams will be starting from square one at the provincials. B.C. School Sports bylaws prohibit teams from playing outside of their designated season and in this case, that means the participating senior boys soccer teams have not been permitted to play exhibition matches to prepare for the tournament. Some players are fortunate enough to still be playing with their club teams, but most have

golf report Delta, Pegasus advance to semis
You have the lead or are close to the lead in a golf tournament and you unfortunately, through a variety of circumstances, don’t come through in the clutch. For some it’s the pressure. For those who have never been there before it’s a case of not knowing how to handle it. I am not sure how Canadian Jon Mills, a veteran of the Nationwide Tour, felt this past Sunday. He was tied for the lead going into Sunday when he came up with a 79 to drop all the way from first to 18th – all in about five hours. This one will probably hurt. He is no stranger to the tour and those stick with you for a while. Meanwhile, Canadian David Hearn, while not leading, was in 30th spot on the PGA Tour on Sunday and when it was over he was down to 41. The new quiet, thoughtful Sergio Garcia, who is trying to get his game in some kind of competitive shape, could miss out on a major. At this point he is not exempt for the U.S. Open when it tees off in June. Here was the guy who was a sure thing, another Seve Ballesteros, they said. Today the boy is gone and the man is struggling. Here’s the deal: Garcia has to be in the top 50 in the world by May 23 in order to qualify or he has to qualify at any of the regional events that are held for that purpose. The longest streak of playing in a major—67—is held by Vijay Singh, but now Singh is on the outside looking in and he will have to qualify. The second-longest streak of playing in majors is 48, held by our own Mike Weir, who has had nothing but trouble attempting to regain his form over the last two years. As a result he is forced to qualify if he doesn’t want to break the streak. Interesting that the guys who have the longest streaks are all going to have to qualify. ********************************************************* Callaway may be in the ball game to buy Titleist. The brand is for sale and normally a billiondollar company would be out of the range of Callaway. However, they have found some very deep pockets to partner with. The Blackstone Group out of New York is apparently willing to partner to bid for the iconic brand.
“It was not an easy game by any means,” said Pegasus coach Rob Reed. “I really take my hat off to the Hurricanes — they played very well, they defended well and they had a good game plan but they just came up a little bit short.” Recently relegated back to division one of Vancouver Metro Soccer League, the Hurricanes vowed the lessons learned during their first premier division campaign will help them build for the future. “We learned a lot, but it would have been nice to learn what we did and stay in premier so we could sustain it,” said Hurricanes manager Billy Dhaliwal. “We found another level to our game this year and that’s key because if we can sustain that level in division one, there’s no reason we won’t be back in premier soon.” Sunday at John Oliver Park, Delta United worked overtime to advance

We won’t have to wait long to find out; final bids are due on May 9. If the owners, Fortune Brands, are not happy with any of the bids they could pull it off the table and set it up as a separate company—interesting. On that note, have a good week. You can reach me at preimer@canwest.com
to the semifinals at the expense of the Wolves. Harpreet Khakh was the hero for Delta with the winning goal nine minutes into the second OT session. Khakh worked his way free behind the Wolves’ defence and, when two defenders and the goalkeeper converged on him, the Delta forward glanced back toward teammate Sunny Bains at the edge of the 18-yard box. Anticipating a back pass to Bains, all three Metro Ford players bit on the move, leaving Khakh alone to deposit the ball into the unguarded net. “Harp showed a lot of composure holding onto the ball,” said Delta coach Steve Millar. “It was a really smart move by Harp. He’s been in the league for six years now and he’s still only 23. It was a big goal for Harp and of all the guys on our team, he deserved it. He played his (backside) off in that game and he finally got rewarded.”

There has to be a lot of pro golfers out there who hate Sundays.
Surrey and Michael BOOTH North Delta are Sports Editor guaranteed of having one team in the final of the senior men’s Provincial Cup tourney following quarter-final action last weekend. Delta United needed overtime to edge out the Metro Ford Wolves (Coquitlam) Sunday while ICST Pegasus prevailed in the battle of Newton with a 2-0 win over the Punjab Hurricanes on Friday night. Delta and Pegasus will meet in the semifinals next weekend (May 6-8). The time and location were not determined at the Now’s press deadline. On Friday night, Pegasus ended the Hurricanes’ season with the shutout win in Newton Athletic Park — a facility both teams call home. Azad Palani scored the winner midway through the opening frame before Jag Gill netted an insurance marker with three minutes to play.
