The new Community Centre and Daycare facility will be opening in 2010. The new centre is for the community and we hope you will take many opportunities to use and enjoy it. We are extremely excited and proud of this project which has been many years in the making and will be moving in this spring. This new centre also creates the opportunity for our department to reexamine current program and bring in some new and innovative programming and events for all age groups. Some of the highlights of the Centre will include the: • the “Hub” • Vancouver Island Regional Library • Community room • Main hall • Three activity rooms, a Youth Room and a teaching/catering Food-Safe kitchen The Hub is located as a separate wing in the facility that will have its own entrance and can also be accessed by the main reception area. The purpose of the “Hub” is to provide family and children’s services in one location and to explore opportunities to integrate services. The Main Hall will be used for various activities including sports, performances, theatre, weddings and conferences. Some of its great features are a sprung wood floor, sprung main stage, and a children’s stage for entertainment. This hall will house 340 people seated for a performance and 200 seated around tables. With the main hall we not only hope to be hosting a wide variety of events but showcasing and highlighting local talent and culture.

WINTER 2010
FULL CIRCLE:
How to Grow Winter-harvest Vegetables with Carol McIntyre
Growing vegetables is a new trend for back-yard gardeners. FULL CIRCLE: How to Grow Winter-harvest Vegetables is a course developed by Carol McIntyre that offers novice and experienced gardeners hands-on methods for growing vegetables that will stand in the garden all winter, providing nutritious organic choices from October to April-May with no weeding, no watering, and no insect control all winter long. Carol guides participants in choosing and ordering seeds, planning and developing the garden site, knowing what to plant, when and how, and learning simple but effective methods to nurture and protect plants, as well as how to save seed for future seasons. Gardeners benefit from time and support between sessions to adapt ideas to their unique needs and settings.
FULL CIRCLE begins in January 2010, continuing in spring, early summer, and early fall. “When learning translates into doing in real time, gardeners work with the seasons while developing the most important skill of all: trusting their experience and intuition in their own garden. My course is designed to facilitate that process.” “Winter produce often comes from great distances, reducing nutritional value at considerable expense to the consumer and to our planet due to costs of packaging, transportation, and storage. Eating locally in season is good for us and for the planet.

A Guide to Living with • • • • • • •
Our Bears
Dispose of Garbage properly and Bear-proof your backyard… NEVER store garbage outside - store indoors in a bear-proof facility. Bring pet food and feeding dishes inside. Burn your barbeques clean. Clean and store them covered out of the wind – preferably in doors (without propane tank). Do not use birdfeeders during bear season. Not only do birds have access to plenty of natural foods during this time, but birdfeeders often spread salmonella and other diseases. Do not leave trash, groceries, animal feed, coolers, or any odorous item in your vehicle or in the back of a pick-up truck. Bears can easily pry open car/truck windows and doors to access the food inside.
What you do Really Matters - Let’s Live in Harmony with our Bears! For more information on the Bear Smart BC community program, please contact Crystal McMillan, Bear Smart BC Society Email: bearsmartbc@telus.net Phone: 250-266-2327 30
