Winter 2010
REGISTRATION INFO
To register for a program drop-in to Tofino’s Municipal Hall or the Community School gym office, or register by phone at 725-3229.
DID YOU KNOW?? You can now register for programs at the District Office, or at the Wickaninnish Community School Gym Office. Both locations will have all of the necessary registration information you may need. While the District Office is open from 9am – 4pm Monday to Friday, the Gym Office will also be open well into the evenings Monday to Friday, when it opens later in September. We hope this makes it convenient for you to register in advance of our programs. Registering in advance allows us time to consider implementing an extra class if the course is full, to ensure adequate materials and supplies are available, and to implement staff/instructor changes should we need to expand the program. Sorry, the course is full: Some classes fill quickly. If the class you want is full, please ask to be placed on the waitlist. You will be contacted if space becomes available or if we add additional classes. Changed your plans? A full credit or refund will be issued if we receive withdrawal information prior to the course start date unless specified otherwise during registration. There is a form available at the District Office to
apply for credits/refunds. It is extremely helpful if you have a copy of your receipt to attach to your application. What?! You had to cancel it? Sometimes excellent courses with excellent instructors are cancelled if everyone waits until the last minute to register (think “Tofino time”). Register early to avoid disappointment for yourself and others. New Program Idea? Tofino Parks and Recreation is always looking for new programs. If you have a skill you’d like to share please give us a call or stop by the District Office. We always have a need for instructors, coaches and volunteers! Program Minimum Ages For the enjoyment of all participants, children must be the correct age prior to the first class of the program. Exceptions may apply for program-specific reasons. Accessibility We believe that recreation programs should be accessible to all children in our community regardless of ability to pay. If you find it difficult to participate in any program because of financial limitations, please speak with one of our staff.
This Winter Program Guide contains program and event information for January, February and March 2010.

“COMMUNITY IN THE SCHOOL, SCHOOL IN THE COMMUNITY” A partnership between the Wickaninnish Community School Society and the Tofino Recreation Commission
In October of this year, the two volunteer organizations held their Annual General Meetings at the same time. Following the business portion, we had time to brainstorm, discuss ideas, and generally get to know eachother. Looking around the room, it was clear we had a wonderful representation of dedicated, community minded individuals; a group that can achieve many great things. This was an exciting time in this phase of the pilot, and will prove to be history in the making. With funding from Union of BC Municipalities, BC School Trustees Association, and Wickaninnish Community School Society, we were able to contract a facilitator to help us through the next steps. Tara Taggart comes to us with experience in coordinating health and lifestyle services, and creating efficient delivery models. Although Tara is familiar with Tofino, she will also bring an objective perspective to the process. You will likely see Tara out and about in the next few months, as she researches and collects information from community members. Watch for our big open house, likely in February and March.
This open house will be critical to the future of the pilot. We want to hear about what you think is working and what is not. Areas we haven’t touched on and should go. What services are missing and how can we help deliver them or provide access to them. This is about our community, and making it the best it can be. To do that, we need you! If you have any questions about the process or about the partnership, please don’t hesitate to contact one of the staff at the office, or one of the organization members.
For your information, as of our most recent Annual General Meeting, here are the following members: Wickaninnish Community School Society Aaron Rodgers Chair Matt Amin Secretary/ Treasurer Krys Sciberras Jaime Hansen Abbie MacPherson
Tofino Recreation Commission Alex Cutler Chair Tom Stere Vice Chair Sabrina Donovan Secretary/ Treasurer Artie Ahier Sarah Timberlake Chris Lyons Theresa Dennison

Helmets for Skiers and Boarders
Skiing has evolved into a faster sport than it was 10 years ago, and snowboarding has become very popular. As a result, more skiers and boarders protect themselves by wearing a helmet. During the mid to late1990s, ski helmet sales increased 10-fold in six years. It is no longer as rare to see people wearing helmets on the slopes as it was even a couple of years ago. Serious head injuries account for less than three per cent of total injuries among skiers and snowboarders, yet they are the leading cause of death, and the injuries can have lifelong consequences. A study of skiers treated for head injuries at a Colorado trauma centre was published in the October 2002 issue of The Journal of Trauma. It found that collisions with trees were the most common cause of head injury and were responsible for the most severe injuries. Snowboarders were three times more likely to suffer a head injury than skiers.

ACTIVE IS GISELLE MARTIN Gisele Martin is this months ACTIVE IS profile. Gisele has grown up in Tofino and has done all kinds of activities over the years. These days she’s been playing ultimate frisbee on Saturdays with the Tofino Ultimate Club. She like the out-of-breath feeling that comes with running around outside throwing frisbees and running after the long passes. Gisele also has an outdoor job. Her tour company is called Tlaook Cultural Adventures, and she spends her spring and summer paddling around her her dugout canoes and hiking around Meares Island. When she’s not paddling she’s bushwhacking through the woods picking berries or collecting cedar bark for weaving. On Sundays Gisele leads kids on the same sort of activities with the Nisma Society. To top it all off, when she’s at home not doing all these other things, she like to turn up the music and dance around in the living room. How’s that for ACTIVE!

ACTIVE IS LAURIE HANNAH
Laurie Hannah hopped on a train with her mountain bike in 1998 destined for Tofino and hasn’t looked back. Being active is just a way of life for Laurie. She’ll try to walk or bike to work/school if the weather is nice, incorporating exercise into her daily routine. She takes advantage of the time, even if it is just an hour, to go for a quick surf or walk with the dog. She plays indoor ball hockey on rainy winter nights and in the days puts on the rain gear to jump in puddles with her munchkins (Izzy and Hannah)! Laurie likes to try new activities like the totally fun climbing gym and the equally challenging and fun Tofino Ultimate Frisbee Club! Last summer she worked as an assistant kayak guide, a job that kept her moving. She has recently started a new job as the Aboriginal Supported Child Development Coordinator, for the Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council. Being active helps keep Laurie happy and strong. She says “When I am active my body feels better and healthier. I have more energy to do things with friends and family.”

Drop-in Hockey Players, With the huge popularity of drop-in adult hockey this Fall we have been getting feedback from players that the large numbers turning up for hockey drop-in have created a situation where players are not getting enough individual play time. In order to address this issue we are asking that for the January – May 2010 season players pre-register for a specific night. We will cap each night at 18 players. Players have the option to reserve their space for either a Monday or a Thursday for a flat fee of $20+GST per night. If you want to play both nights the cost will be $40+GST. You assure your space by paying your fee in advance to the school gym office. Spaces will be reserved on a first come, first serve basis, so please register asap. A list of registered players will be posted at the gym. If preregistered players do not turn up to play, non-registered players may drop-in for a $2 fee. If the registered player shows up, they will have priority to play. If you have any questions or concerns please stop by the Wickaninnish Community School Gym Office for a chat, or call us at725-2555. It is our hope that this creates a better quality playing experience for everyone. Thanks for your cooperation.

COLDWATER CLASSIC
What an exciting and proud day for Tofino to not only host Canada’s first ever Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) event, but to have our own Peter Devries take top prize and become the first ever Canadian to win a professional surfing competition. With 144 of the world’s best up and coming surfers competing in the event, this was no small accomplishment.
Tofino’s pride could be witnessed all over town with local residents and businesses putting up homemade signs of congratulations made on pizza boxes, surfboard boxes, pieces of plywood etc. How cool for Pete to win such a landmark event on the beach he grew up on.
Over 1000 locals, media and event staff watched the finals at North Chesterman Beach, and while the event was one of the largest Tofino has ever seen, things all seemed to go fairly smoothly thanks to some great coordination and communication by event organizers, and of course the cooperation and understanding of local residents and visitors alike. Thanks everyone!

COLDWATER CLASSIC LEGACY PROJECT The recent O’Neill Cold Water Classic attracted visitors from around the globe to the waters of Tofino. Inspired by the O’Neill Sea Odyssey program, Remote Passages Marine Excursions donated 10% of tours taken by CWC visitors and guests to the Tofino Parks & Recreation West Coast Water Week Camp. Funds raised totaled $330 -- this money will go toward sponsoring local children to participate in a fun-filled week of camp dedicated to marine exploration and conservation. Remote Passages looks forward to growing this legacy project together with O’Neill as the CWC returns to Tofino annually. Thanks to Don and Kati and the staff at Remote Passages Marine Excursions for establishing this wonderful project!

I have to tell you how much I am enjoying these classes. Up to now I've taken other courses which have covered much of the same material, but this time things are really clicking. I'm understanding more and retaining more of the information. I'm more aware of the implications of going organic not just in gardening but in other aspects of my life. It's like an epiphany. It sounds silly when I write it down, but it's made me so much more aware. Thank you. Barb Bancroft, Vancouver Finally, a comprehensive organic gardening course for urban garden enthusiasts! Come and gather with like-minded environmentally conscious students and •Learn to create fabulous food and ornamental gardens without pesticides and other harmful chemicals •Become a SOUL Organic Master Gardener and share your knowledge with others through mentorship programs, workshops, talks and many other creative ways •Gain essential skills to start or enhance your own business in the rapidly growing organic land care industry •Earn generous Continuing Education Credits to maintain your industry certifications (ISA, CNLA, BCSLA, SOUL, BC Provincial Pesticide Applicator) Everyone is welcome. PARKS & FACILITIES

A new fence was constructed this Fall at Tofino’s Seaview Cemetary
New Cemetery Fence As we go to press, we are putting the finishing touches on the new cemetery fence installation. Instead of the traditional white picket fence, we have installed a stained cedar picket fence, which blends in nicely with the natural wilderness setting. Again, local wood supplied by Clayoquot Excavation and labour by our parks and public works crew.
The Eagles Have Landed! After approximately 20 years of nesting on our Welcome To Tofino sign at the Village Green, our eagles took flight across the bay to Vargas Dan’s workshop. They were in a sad state on close inspection, but Dan was up for the challenge. Probably the biggest challenge we had was getting them down off their perch. The Shore were able to supply a ma-
chine and some man power from Vic Van Isle construction and happily came to our rescue. Thanks to both companies! Our eagles are now back on the regular perch, proud and regal.

Have you checked out the new bridge at the Solwood beach access? The old bridge was very much in need of replacement, and with wood milled by Clayoquot Excavation and the labour of our fine public works crew, a new bridge finally came into being. We will be looking at improving the remainder of the trail, particularly with a view to safety and easier access down onto the beach.
Centennial Stream Restoration A large piece of culvert was successfully removed with Gibson Brothers doing a fine job lifting the culvert without damaging any of the existing forest. Already we seem the stream flushing and some aquatic activity. Next up, the students at Wickaninnish will be working with the crew from the Raincoast Education Society to learn about rain gardens by building an in class model. Then in spring we’ll move out and create a real rain garden that will feed into the stream, cleaning the street run off that is directed to the stream. As always, big thanks to our partners; Raincoast Education Society, Tofino Streamkeepers, Wickaninnish School students and staff, and biologist Dave Clough.

Community Hall Beautification Thanks to a $5000 grant from Tree Canada, the Tofino Community Hall site received some much needed beautification in the form of landscaping. Trina from Ordinary Corner Nursary worked with Parks Staff Theo Fadden to select vegetation suitable for the site. Theo worked in some chilly weather, digging in some not too friendly ground to get this project wrapped up before Christmas. A mix of evergreen and deciduous plants were used, and while some of the deciduous plants and trees don’t look like much now, they promise to look great come spring. Still to be planted on the site once the weather warms up are several rugosa roses.
