Remembering Joshua

by Ruth Isenberg There are some subjects people find it difficult to talk about. Suicide is one of them.

Jennifer Cooper of Weatherly knows how important it is to talk about suicide, both for people who may be thinking about it, as well as for those left behind. That’s the main reason she started the Remembering Joshua Suicide Awareness Event two years ago. Her son, Joshua Naegele, a 2016 graduate of Weatherly Area High School and Wilkes University student, took his life in 2019.

This event in his memory raises money for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, but even more important to Cooper, it gives people a safe place to learn about suicide, and ways to talk about it.

That’s why one of the first tables at the basket raffle held

September 4 and 5 at the Eurana Park Pavilion in Weatherly was the resources table, with literature about preventing youth suicide and military suicide, along with survivor guides and more. There were also more than 60 baskets raffled off, refreshments for sale, a DJ, and a troupe of Star Wars characters that were very popular with the kids.

A total of $2,841 was raised for suicide awareness and prevention over the two-day event. The money will be presented at the annual Out of the Darkness Community Walk this Sunday, September 12, at Kirby Park in WilkesBarre, by the Remembering Joshua team Cooper leads.

What have we learned?

Twenty years ago on September 11, 2001, our country was attacked by a cell of terrorists who were looking to kill American citizens. Members of the cell had learned to fly commercial passenger aircraft, then set in motion a plan to gain access to cockpits of aircraft leaving the East Coast to fly to the West Coast. These would be bigger aircraft, with full loads of fuel.

The cell of 19 men were able to hijack four planes, flying the first of them into the North tower of New York City’s 110 story World Trade Center. A second aircraft crashed into the South tower 18 minutes later. The planes and the fuel fires in each building caused the two to collapse, killing over 2,500 people.

A third aircraft was flown over Washington, D.C. and into the Pentagon, killing nearly 200. A fourth plane, leaving from Newark, was delayed in its takeoff and passengers had learned about the other three airplanes and determined that their plane was also being flown by terrorists. On this flight, the passengers fought and by their efforts, the pilot lost control and crashed into a coal mine pit in western PA— killing the 44 on board but no one else.

So here we are 20 years later, and not only do we want to re-learn the history of this attack, but also re-learn the lessons, primarily that our nation remains vulnerable to attack from terrorists. While we enjoy the freedoms that our country has worked hard to offer, we citizens need to step up and be alert to actors who want to take those freedoms away. We need to support law enforcement with their work in keeping us safe, and be alert ourselves to inform law enforcement when there is something suspicious. That alertness could save lives.

COVID doesn’t change the reality that the 9-11 attack painfully revealed — that our nation is only as safe as citizens make it.

The front page top photo was of the ribbon cutting that took place for the new bridge into Penn Lake Park. Mayor Kenneth MacMillan is show at the center with the scissors, surrounded by well-wishers and council members and their spouses. The ceremony was held on August 24.

Lucille and Jacob Hartley of Church Street in White Haven observed their 55th wedding anniversary on August 30.

They were married in 1936 by the late Rev. John Breckenridge of St. James Episcopal Church in Freeland.

Laura Lesser, daughter of Carol and Donald Lesser of R2, White Haven (Foster Township), was awarded a presidential scholarship from Beaver College in suburban Philadelphia. She is the 1991 Salutatorian of Freeland High School.

Penn Lake Council will hire a new security company at an increase of $1 an hour from the former one. Council president John Africa explained that the new company will offer improved service.

Girl Scout troops of White Haven will hold registration on Tuesday, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Parish Hall.

The Crestwood Comets football team got off to a flying start with a come-frombehind victory over host Lakeland, 22-20, with two TDs the result of blocked Lakeland punts.

The team’s next opponent is Wilkes-Barre G.A.R. at their field on Saturday.

Champions of the Freeland Industrial Men’s Bowling League had a dinner on August 23 at The Ugly Mug. Team members and wives attended and in a photo are shown Rickey and Joann Hartley; Ann, Jim and Brian Ammon; Skip Stefanick and Mike Spida.

Inspiring Thoughts How time flies! It is hard to believe it has been 20 years since enemy planes attacked America. How America has changed! God has not changed!

Unless you are under 25, you probably remember where you were when you heard about the attacks. I was working in an office when someone told me one of the Twin Towers in New York was struck by a plane. I didn’t even know what the Twin Towers were. Everyone assumed it was a terrible accident and went back to work. A bit later, I heard about the other tower being hit and other planes being highjacked. At lunch time, I went up to the conference room and watched the TV coverage on the only television in the facility. Believe it or not, cell phones were not

attached to everyone’s ear in those days and social media was non-existent.

During the afternoon, I prayed for our country and worried, but I also had to work. When I arrived home, I turned on the TV. It seemed like a movie with terrific special effects, but this was real.

America was under attack, even the Pentagon.

Americans reacted. Some joined the military. Some made speeches. Some prayed. Many wept. I wept and prayed and wondered what would happen next. Then I sat down to express my thoughts in poetry.

traffic violations, a fraud incident, an assist to the White Haven Fire Department, and an animal complaint.

The concrete portion of the DCNR’s ADA Grant work is complete but the project was not finished as of the meeting. Delays have been caused by labor and shipment issues.

The work was expected to be done by Labor Day. The drainage problem at the beach was fixed. The projects was expected to be completed by Labor Day. The Penn Lake Association plans on placing boat racks on Carter Beach and the Gazebo area.

Pothole patching by Shiffer Bituminous was to begin in late August.

AQUA PA’s water main replacement project by Linde Construction hit an unmarked drain pipe, which they will repair. Council member Dave Longmore expects the work to be done by the end of August with paving to follow. He will meet with AQUA and Linde to address drainage problems around the Community House area. He also expects that Linde will restore the ball park area they used in Phase I of their project, as they wrap us this phase.

Re-treatment of the bladderwort in the lake will be necessary, according to the contractor hired to do the work, and a spot treatment of water shield would also be a good idea. Both treatments were to occur by the end of August.

The Borough received two bids to buy and then install various road signs. Minichi was low bidder at $4,670 and they were approved by council for the work.

About the dam, a live meeting on August 2 with PEMA helped to explain the “Period of Performance” window which opened on October 1, 2020. It means that money spent by the Borough would count toward the 25% match.

Borton Lawson was re-hired for this year’s Dam Inspection, provided the cost is no more than 10% higher than last year.

Council voted to advertise for bids for snow removal and winter roads maintenance for the upcoming winter season.

Council approved bills of $33,081. Receipts in July into borough accounts totaled $40,390.

Council voted to extend the State of Emergency for 30 days and continue to hold remote meetings. Penn Lake will meet online tonight, September 9, starting at 7 p.m. Council meets the second Thursday of each month.

Seth’s Sightings It has been 41 years of The Journal-Herald. The Weatherly Herald was bought

by Jay and Clara Holder from Clete Milan at the end of the summer in 1980, and The Journal-Herald made its debut with the first issue of September that year.

Ruth and I spent the weekend volunteering. On Saturday we helped with the Coffee Break team of the Weatherly Area Community Library, as we interacted with travelers on Route 81 South, Nuangola.

This turned out to be a lot of fun, and the library did well.

Sunday, I was part of the team helping at the Blakeslee Rotary car show, which unfortunately was reduced by rain to a soggy shadow of itself.

There was fun to be had as well. Saturday evening, we went to the party that celebrated the Penn Lake Association’s 80th anniversary. It had a 1980s theme, which added to the fun, as there were 80s decorations, 80s music and a good number of the guests came in 80s outfits.

Sunday afternoon, I was hoping to see a live performance of Hazleton’s 70s

Flashback Band, which was booked into Knoebels for Sunday and Monday. After spending hours in the drizzle at Pocono Raceway, the idea of music and a couple of rides really appealed. But when we got to the park, and then to the bandshell, there was no sign of the band. We were able to piece together that something had caused them not to be able to perform in the evening. We were disappointed, but did take some time to walk the park with the dogs.

All of us took a train ride, with Spookie tucked under my legs to lean out the side, and Bull sitting politely beside Ruth. I also enjoyed some bumper car rides before we left early.

Sightings include a small flock of turkey, and possibly an eagle. I have also seen an uptick in deer action — running up to the road or diving across. With driving around nightfall and in the dark, I’m getting a lot of tail-gating drivers lately. On Saturday, when I had to stomp on the brakes due to a buck that was in a hurry, we came close to being rear-ended.

by Seth Isenberg from my bout with COVID, with the primary side effect being the quick draining of my energy. My sleep is still affected. It has been nice to be out and about. While quarantined, we missed a couple of our favorite summer events including MusikFest and the Carbon County Fair.

During low energy moments, I am reading Ship of Gold by Gary Kinder — a rare nonfiction book for me as I prefer adventures…but Kinder is writing about a modern adventure. I have started a Tanya Huff series — The Keeper Chronicles.

Rosh HaShana started the Jewish new year on Monday night of this week. Best wishes to our Jewish readers at the start of their Holy week, which ends with Yom Kippur next Wednesday, the 15th through sundown on Thursday.

Looking ahead, the Pocono Arms and Military Show is in the garages in the infield of Pocono Raceway this Friday, Saturday and Sunday. This show combines a regular gun show with large outdoor displays including antique military vehicles. Ruth and I will attend but have not chosen a day. We also will be going to tribute events about 9-11 this weekend.

Date set for Weatherly Halloween parade The Weatherly Area Community Chest’s annual Halloween Parade will be held Saturday, October 30, with a rain date of October 31.

Registration will take place starting at 1 p.m. on the grounds of Our Lady of Lourdes Church.

Following registration, the parade will form and begin at 2 p.m.

Organizations wishing to participate need only to show up and register. The Weatherly Community Chest welcomes and encourages any branch of the boy or girl scouts, Weatherly T-Ball, Little League and Soccer League players, Weath-

erly Rotary, Weatherly Flower Club, Weatherly Area Community Library, Weatherly Museum, American Legion and Legion Auxiliary Posts 360, Senior Parents, or any other organizations, to join in on the fun and take part in the event, whether it be as a group, in a car, or on a float.

Participants will parade past the old borough building up to Eurana Park, where prizes will be awarded, candy distributed and refreshments served.

This flag will be raised during the 9/11 memorial ceremony at 1 p.m. on Saturday at American Legion Post 360 in Weatherly. The event will be preceded by a free breakfast for veterans and emergency service personnel, and followed by an open house.

A bright, crisp September morning, fractured by the whine of screaming jet engines. High above the Manhattan skyline, two giant monoliths shine in the morning sun, a symbol of America’s prosperity.

Suddenly pierced by a juggernaut of steel, fuel and hate. Sirens scream in the background as stunned pedestrians are showered by a sea of falling papers, ash and debris.

As fire, police and emergency personnel rushed into the building, again the roar of jet engines is heard, seconds before exploding into a ball of flame in the second tower.

Shock, horror and disbelief are mirrored on the faces of hundreds on the streets below, around the country and the rest of the world.

To the south at the heart of our nation’s defenses, the scene is repeated as smoke and flame rage through the Pentagon. Without regard to their own safety members of all the services, and civilians rush to the aid of the injured and dying , helping the firefighters valiantly trying to douse the flames.

While in the towers, some choose to jump rather than await a fiery death, as other

phone family with a final loving message.

Suddenly, a great shudder overtakes the South Tower as it crumbled in upon its self, amid a giant cloud of dust, engulfing Manhattan, taking with it hundreds of lives — civilians, firefighters, police and emergency personnel.

Shortly after the North Tower is gone, again with with a tremendous toll.

To the west over the skies of peaceful Pennsylvania farmland, a Life and Death struggle is taking place, as passengers struggle to regain control of

an airliner, later reported to have been headed for Washington, its target the White House or the Capitol Building. Ultimately this struggle ends in a blackened hole in a Shanksville field. These brave citizens became the first line of defense against the evil unleashed on our great nation that September day.

The sacrifices made by those passengers, firefighters, police, emergency personnel, military and ordinary citizens will never be forgotten.

White Haven author second book set to release soon Trudging through both Covid and a mad political climate countrywide, local award-winning artist and writer Christopher Vernon still kept his eye on the prize toward the light at the end of the dark tunnel of 2020 and 2021. Now on the brink of releasing his second book this fall, Love Letters to My Younger Self, he is determined to push forward no matter what.

Comets fall short at Berwick, face Tigers next Berwick’s Aidan Mason came off the bench to score the game’s only touchdown on a 1-yard run, and the Bulldogs made it stand up for a 14-9 victory over visiting Crestwood last Friday night at Crispin Field in Berwick. Mason’s run capped a long third-quarter scoring drive for the Bulldogs, where he finished with the bulk of his gamehigh 59 yards rushing.

The Comets (0-2) got inside the Berwick 10-yard line early in the game before fumbling.

Neither team scored until Crestwood grabbed a 2-0 lead at 8:54 of the second quarter when a bad snap went out of the Berwick end zone for a safety.

Two minutes later, Berwick took the lead when Drey Wilk stepped in front of a Brendan Dennis pass at midfield

and returned the pick 50 yards for a touchdown. The Bulldogs’ third-quarter touchdown by Mason upped the lead to 14-2 before the Comets sliced it to five at 9:45 of the fourth when Dennis scooped up a fumble and returned it 38 yards for the score.

Crestwood moved into Bulldog territory late in the fourth quarter, but Wilk picked off his second pass on a fourthdown play. From there, Berwick (1-1) was able to keep the Comets at arm’s length and secure its first win of the season.

Ethan Shudak paced

the Crestwood rushing attack with 49 yards on 12 carries. He also caught two passes. Noah Schultz, who was moved to running back for the game, added 25 yards on 10 totes. Dennis completed 5-of-14 passes in his first start at quarterback. He was picked off

Berwick will remain at home this Friday night to play Hazleton Area (0-2). Crestwood makes the trip to Tunkhannock.

Lady Comets open strong at Robbins Run The Crestwood girls made their presence felt at Saturday’s 46th-annual Cliff Robbins Memorial Cross Country Run at Letterkenny Fields in Dallas. Despite the challenges — and a shortened race because of the wet conditions left behind from Wednesday’s heavy rain storm – the run was at least back after being cancelled last year due to COVID-19.

Crestwood senior Molly DeMarzo (15:41) placed second, sophomore teammate Maggie Kozich (15:46) was third, and freshman Ella Novelli (15:47) placed fourth, giving the Lady Comets a 2-3-4 overall finish in the girls’ varsity race. Also back are juniors Brady Walters and Nathan Tripp, who are pushing to be part of the top-5.

“Obviously the big question for this team is can we win without Scotty,” Kately said.

“We’re not thinking about last year at all. Our focus is on this year We have a solid four runners in Ray, Willis, Berger and Parker, but not a clear cut No. 1. Walters, Dotzel, Tripp and Maguschak can round out the top five.”

“We’re really looking for Danielle and Kendell to take big strides this year and for the other girls to follow in behind them and have big improvements from last year,” he continued. “Danielle and Kendell are one of the best 1-2 duos in the division and we want them to build off the confidence they got last year going into this year.

“The girls really work well together and help each other improve every day. There are also a couple girls in the junior high program who I am really impressed with so I’m excited as a whole for the girls program this year.”

Look for Kaelyn Barker, Maggie Riccio, Katie Modrovsky, Megan Laskoski, and Juliana Ambosie to also make noise for the Crestwood runners this fall.

“Our girls’ squad finished undefeated last year with a group of five girls. We lose three of our five, but have new girls ready to continue the tradition,” Moulton said. “These girls have been hungrier than ever and are pushing each other to new limits. They are very supportive of one another, which is awesome.

“We’re excited to just get them out and have fun!”

The Crestwood boys also return key runners from last year’s 13-3 squad, including seniors Nash Greene and Jack Scanlan, and junior Weston Medvetz. Look for James Modrovsky and Ryan Kozich

to make their mark for the Comets, along with Nick Humen, Isaac Mertz and Austin Campbell.

“The boys fought hard to a 13-3 record last year despite losing some senior veterans and injuries,” Moulton said.

“We lost a few seniors, but have a lot of depth coming into this year. These boys have

come a long way running and leadership-wise.

“It’s been a consistent process as there are some tough teams out there, but this team is hungry to take things to the next level in the conference and at districts.”

Moulton will be assisted by Amy Viti, Gina Jakubowski and Keith Junas.

Crestwood stickers looking to pick up where they left off

by Steve Stallone Sports Editor The Crestwood field hockey team saw the highest of highs, and the lowest of lows in 2020.

The Lady Comets captured their first district title since 2015 on Mallory Moratori’s dramatic, game-winning goal against reigning PIAA champion-Wyoming Valley West in the second overtime of an epic district final. However, they were unable to ride that momentum into the state tournament thanks to the pandemic.

They learned on the eve of the tournament that they were shut down due to COVID. “I think everyone on the team wants to finish our business that we were supposed to do last year,” said senior forward Emma George, the team’s leading returning scorer. “But

we just take it one game at a time, where we’re trying to find the best ways to win and obviously have a good season.”

The Lady Comets already have two games under their belt, beating Nanticoke 6-1 in their opener on Friday and then blanking Abington Heights 5-0 on Saturday. Junior midfielder Emma Guydish scored two goals to lead the way against the Trojanettes. Sophomores Emily DelVecchio and Gabby Ambosie knocked in first-period tallies and Aubrey Macri and Emerson Lazo later added their first tallies of the season.

Winning goalie Isabella Caporuscio was perfect with eight saves. “We think we have a lot of people this year that can contribute,” Patsy Moratori, the Lady Comets’ head coach, said afterward. “We seem to

have a deep bench. We have a lot of different people who, you know, can definitely step up.

And we had a lot of different scorers today, which is nice.”

George concurred. “We don’t really have one designated person that we want to get the ball to,” she said. “We just want the ball in the back of the cage, so we’ll do whatever we have to do to score.”

Against Abington Heights it was George who stepped forward, recording her first varsity hat trick with three goals. Macri and DelVecchio added one goal apiece.

That was more than enough for the Lady Comets defense and sophomore goalie Anna Thomas, who stopped all six of the shots that she faced.

“It was the best feeling,” George said of her hat trick,

“because at the beginning of the game my Dad and I made a bet. He told me you better get three goals in this game. I think he was kidding. As soon as I made the third goal, I made sure I found him.

“My teammates were very excited. It was just a good feeling.”

George, back Krista Papura and mid/back Aubrey Colo are four-year letterwinners. Caporuscio, a first-team all-star last season, Guydish, Ambosie, DelVecchio and junior back Lauren Schmude are among the top players back from the Lady Comets’ district championship team.

“The team has worked extremely hard all summer long,” Moratori said. “They showed up every day and gave 100%. We are excited to see

how their dedication and determination pay off during the season.”

Crestwood will swing back into action with a home non-conference game against Bloomsburg on Thursday.
