THE FREEDOM FLAG was raised in front of Weatherly Area Middle School on Friday morning, following an assembly that included the history of September 11, 2001; information about the Freedom Flag and how it was developed; examples of heroism on 9/11 and other occasions, and an update on the Tunnels to Towers race that honors first responders and commemorates September 11 each year. The public was invited to attend the assembly, and mem bers of American Legion Post 360 and its Auxiliary took part. JH: Ruth Isenberg

The Lehigh Gorge State Park and Delaware & Lehigh Heritage Corridor trail south of White Haven’s downtown is closed. A gate now graces the path just south of the Pocono Biking property. There are no instructions as to how to reconnect with the trail further south. At meetings between State Park officials and White Haven citizens and business in the 1990s and 2000s, promises were made that any gate would always be open. According to the DCNR website: Lehigh Gorge State Park is currently undertaking a sizeable rehabilitation project extending from Middleburg Road south to Tannery Road and active construction is underway. The work will provide a new entrance road, a year-round modern restroom facility, new boat launch areas for both private and commercial boaters and upgraded roadways and parking. The project will also convey improvements to the Lehigh Gorge Trail, part of the Delaware & Lehigh National Heritage Corridor, including a connector to White Haven’s Main Street and business district. Until September 27, the gate will be closed to the public Monday through Friday with trail access and limited parking in these areas open for Saturdays and Sundays. All other day-use facilities at Lehigh Gorge State Park south of Tannery Road will remain open to the public during this period. Opportunities to enjoy the park include boating, hiking, biking, and fishing. The public is advised to call the park for updated information on open areas, or to check the park’s web page.
