Jack Rader to seek re-election in 176th House District Pledges To Continue Results-First Record Of Bipartisan Accomplishment State Representative Jack Rader (R-176) has announced that he will be running for re-election in the 176th House District. “Throughout my time as State Representative, I have made it clear that what I care about is getting results that help people, not playing politics,” Rader said. “Now more than ever, with a divided government and many challenges facing our state, we must continue to work together, restore common sense, and find bipartisan solutions.” Rader has successfully passed laws in Harrisburg

to expand economic opportunity for Monroe County businesses, secured millions of dollars in grants to fund local infrastructure and public safety improvements, and voted for record education funding for Monroe County schools to help children as well as control property taxes. He’s done it by working across the aisle and focusing on local priorities. With local residents now facing out-of-control inflation driven by Washington’s outrageous spending, Rader is running for re-election because he

knows our local communities need strong representation to protect our state tax dollars and get our economy back on track. “Now more than ever we need to focus on commonsense solutions that help people afford the everyday items they need to live and that make life just a little more affordable,” Rader said. “I’ll continue to fight for the fiscally conservative policies that have kept our state budget in check, focused on priorities, and respected taxpayers.” Rader pledged to once again follow the philosophy that has served our community so well: do what’s right for the people he serves.

“I will continue to focus on the issues that the people of our community tell me are the most important to them: fighting over-spending that causes inflation, supporting an education system that helps everyone, keeping our communities safe, and sparking the economic and job growth that allows families to reach economic security in their homes,” said Rader. While fighting for local residents in Harrisburg, Rader also maintains strong constituent services at home. He and his staff have helped thousands of residents address their issues with state government, in the process helping families, charities, small businesses

and more. “Listening to residents, visiting local businesses, meeting with folks whenever possible, holding events with constituents – it’s simply the best way to ‘represent’ people and their interests in Harrisburg,” Rader said. “That’s why it has always been a top priority for me, and always will be.” Rader is a successful local businessman, a lifelong resident of the community, and a husband, father and grandfather. He lives in Jackson Township with his wife, Susan. Together they are the proud parents of four children and seven grandchildren.

No new taxes in Mount Pocono Borough by Pat Albano

Mount Pocono Borough Council held several meetings on January 3 to begin the new year. First was a public hearing on tax

millage. Council president Don Struckle stated, “taxes on real estate, library and fire remain the same as 2023.” Mayor Randy Altemose took control of the reorganization meeting for

election of officers. Council member Claudette Williams nominated Struckle for president, which passed by acclimation. Norman Delano and Ann Marie Harris were nominated for Vice President

Mt. Pocono still looking at LERTA by Pat Albano

Mount Pocono Borough Council held a special meeting to adopt the 2024 budget and a meeting on the Newland Capital Group LERTA on December 19. Newland requested a LERTA for their 1.2 million square foot warehouse on Route 940. Matthew Frank of Newland stated, “We presently have two facilities and 215 employees in New Jersey and have decided to make a permanent move to the Poconos. Our goal is to have employees living here as permanent residents.” Council member Ann Marie Harris asked, “How many employees will commute?” and was told 15, with a potential for 550 employees. David Babbitt, Land

Planning Consultant, discussed a revised table from the March meeting offering an additional tax abatement savings of $598 for homeowners and more dollars to the borough. Mayor Randy Altemose had additional questions on landscaping, road traffic and better communications between fire, police and ambulance. He added “We still need discussion with the school board.” Council president Don Struckle said, “The bottom line — the tax base is one thing but what the residents want is also important.” Council member Debra Fulton stated, “Everything that happens in Mount Pocono is the result of the warehouse — residents are anti warehouse.” Council vice-president Norm Delano added, “My

communication on social media shows the warehouse is not popular with residents.” Struckle added, “I like the idea that you came back to us with proposals and are open to several of our ideas.” A possible public relations campaign was suggested.

with Delano being re-elected. Harris was elected as President Pro Temp. James Ferari remains solicitor, and Barry Isett & Associates remains borough engineer. At the regular meeting, Francis O’Boyle was reappointed to the Zoning Hearing Board. One final discussion included Atty. Ferari’s recusal from actions involving Sheetz due to a conflict of interest. Ferari has represented Sheetz. He said “Clark Connor will represent the borough and be paid by developers. Sheetz will pay all fees and the Borough will not lose any money.” Ferari also added he could recommend three or four

other lawyers if needed. After being re-elected, Struckle stated “I hope I can continue to do the best for our residents.” He congratulated new council member Erin Melbert. Borough Manager Marissa Duffy gave updates on violations at 56 Pine Hill Rd and letters sent to residents on construction without permits. Duffy added, “11 Cedar Rd needs repairs and there has been no progress at this address after the borough sent a letter. The Zoning Department is asking the Board if it wants to proceed to the next level and file a civil complaint.” A motion passed to file a civil complaint.

It’s nice to see more evening daylight as we put the winter solstice behind us. Thank you to all who have kept their Christmas lights on during these dark evenings. Consider keeping them up through Valentine’s Day, maybe as far as St. Patrick’s Day as by then the evenings will be lit by sunsets approaching 7 p.m. I expect a snowstorm or

two these next two weeks. I have shovels at the ready at our office and at home. Skiers endured a warm week between the holidays. Somehow the ski areas put a good product out for them. Thankfully, cooler temperatures have made snowmaking possible, rebuilding the base and even adding acreage. Congratulations to Trent

Police Beat At 1:11 p.m. on 12/30, Pocono Mountain Regional Police was dispatched to a crash of two vehicles on Route 611 in Coolbaugh Township, each with only a driver — no passengers. Both drivers needed to be freed from the wreckage. One was taken to Community Medical Center in Scranton, the other went to Lehigh Valley Hospital– Pocono. Both were listed in critical condition. Route 611 was closed from Sharbaugh Drive to Hemlock Drive during the rescue, accident cleanup, and PMRPD’s forensic reconstruction of the crash. PMRPD is seeking any witnesses. Call them at 570 895-2400. 12-23 — While in A Pocono Country Place, PMRPD officers saw a car driven by Christian Rosario, 26, of Coolbaugh Township, who

was wanted on Monroe County warrants. An attempt to make a vehicle stop at 11:45 a.m. led to him driving off at high speed. Officers did not pursue. Other PMRPD officers saw him speed by on Route 196 and speed into Mt. Pocono. PA State Police tried to stop him on Intestate 80. The Stroud Regional Police also tried. Rosario finally stopped for New Jersey State Police. He was arrested on felony fleeing and eluding, resisting arrest, and a whole bunch of moving and vehicle code violations. NJSP arrested him, and he was extradited back into the Monroe County jail. 12-19 — 1:09 p.m., PSPFern Ridge Trooper Nowicki made a traffic stop on Route 903 in Penn Forest Township, and found 44 y/o driver Peter Ivanitch under

the influence of drugs. A search of the driver found more narcotics AND a metal tube with an exposed fuse. PSP’s bomb squad was called and they took possession of the device. Ivanitch was arrested and taken to the Carbon County jail on charges of possession of a weapon of mass destruction, risking catastrophe, DUI and narcotics possession. Bail is set at $100,000. 12-18 — a 57 y/o Penn Forest Twp. man received a harassing Christmas card by mail which he brought to PSP-F. 12-13 – 3 a.m., Troopers were dispatched to a home on Cold Spring Drive, Penn Forest Twp., on a report of a suicidal male. The 28 y/o had fired off a gun from the driveway, and now had barricaded himself in his room while holding a gun to his head. He texted his father saying he wanted to commit suicide by cop. His father managed to coax him out of the home where he surrendered to police without incident. He was taken to St. Luke’s Carbon Campus and committed for a mental health evaluation. Charges of terroristic threats are filed, PSP-F.

TEC students Raced Into Reading This year’s Race into Reading Week had everyone revved up for reading. Every day was full of fun, engaging activities that celebrated reading.

Tricky from our generous sponsor, Pocono Raceway, helped start the week off with a visit to our school. He greeted TEC students at the buses and made a special pit stop to see his favorite fans. TEC’s staff and bus drivers also took part in our reading week and nominated students with the best behavior in the cafeteria and on the bus for the Wheel of Good Behavior. Twice daily, the wheel was spun, and the winners selected a book to celebrate their amazing behavior throughout the school. Students with perfect attendance were also entered into a raffle to win prizes like books and fun pencils. Students’ good behavior and attendance proved that hard work and a positive attitude pays off. There were over 65 students that were celebrated throughout Race into Reading Week. Every morning began with a special mystery reader. During our TEC Morning Announcements Show, our amazing guests read excerpts from their books. Guessing

their identity was so much fun. Homerooms called in to guess and the winning homeroom won the book. A special thanks to our mystery readers: Mrs. Meisenhelder,

Miss Gallagher, Mrs. Price, Mrs. Schaumloffel, Ms. Myers, Mr. Hopkins, and Ms. Perez. You were spectacular. Miss Trudi, a generous benefactor from our community, visited several classes and read a special book. Our wonderful Ms. Pitzer, a retired teacher who volunteers at TEC, read to second grade. Dr. Bethann McCain, PMSD’s new Director of English

Language Arts and Reading, shared a book from our greatly anticipated guest author, Alan St. Jean, who will be visiting us in March during Read Across America. Bridget Gollin and Martina Polomcak, from our PTO, read to kindergarten and first grade. Our principal, Dr. John Kevra and viceprincipal, Mrs. Grebb, also joined in the fun and read to several classes. A special thank you to these amazing individuals for sharing their favorite books and their love of reading. Everyone enjoyed reading. Some classes enjoyed reading in their classrooms, others visited another classroom. Our fourthgrade classes ventured to kindergarten to share their favorite books. Other classes visited the Reading Nook, a wonderful addition to our festiviites this year. Need a book? Clymer Library is a fantastic place to visit and borrow books. They are generous supporters of our Reading Week and donated tons of books for

Pictured above: Benjamin H., Mia B., Harper V., Aviana M., Rand M., and Gabriela W. our students to enjoy. PTO’s second annual READ-A-THON was a huge success. What fun we had reading and logging our minutes. The winners were: Aviana M. from Mrs. Perez’s fourth-grade class, who logged 1,889 minutes for first place; Rand M. from Mrs. Wolfgang’s second-grade class, who logged 1,484 minutes; and Gabriela W. From Mr. Bergeski’s sixthgrade class, who logged 1,230 minutes. The students who raised the most donations were: Benjamin H. from Mrs. Placek’s Kindergarten classroom, Mia B. from Mrs. Bowers’ fourth-grade classroom, and Harper V. from Mr. Hopkins’ sixth grade class, and Dylan M. from Mrs. Campbell’s fourthgrade class.

We ended our week-long celebration with our 3rd annual Dress Like your Favorite Character Parade. It was incredible. Our classrooms were filled with Pippi Longstocking, The Cat in the Hat, Harry Potter, Dog Man, Cat Kid, and many more beloved characters Many students who demonstrate PRIDE every day cashed in their hardearned DOJO points to join our West basketball players and cheerleaders to read together. After reading their prized book, the TEC students cheered and played basketball with our West Athletes. The Race into Reading Week was a blast. We stopped, dropped, and read all week because… we are never too busy to read. Remember …keep on reading.
