Tobyhanna Twp. supervisors turn down warehouse conditional use proposal by Seth Isenberg
WELCOME TO CAMP LIFE: Michael Dembinski stands in the entryway to Dembinski Realty’s new home, located in the former Bendixen’s gift shop in Pocono Summit. JP: Ruth Isenberg
Realty office’s new home shows fun of camp life by Ruth Isenberg
Open Houses can be important tools for selling homes. Earlier this month, Michael Dembinski used this tool to show off not only the new location of Dembinski Realty, but also to illustrate how much fun, and how beautiful, ‘camp life’ can be. Dembinski Realty is now located at 2414 Route 940, in the former Bendixen’s gift shop — a space Michael has transformed into a showcase of ideas. A mix of antiques, craft pieces and artwork gives the space the air of a mountain cabin, rustic and sophisticated at the same time.
Michael had a hand in selecting all the furnishings and artwork, with one goal in mind — to reflect the beauty and history of the area Dembinski Realty serves. In a tour of the two-story space, he talked about maintaining the feeling of the mountain camp lifestyle found in their primary service areas of Lake See CAMP LIFE, page 4
There was a full house at the Tobyhanna Township monthly Supervisors meeting on January 16 after a snowstorm. Commercial property developers J.G. Petrucci Co. presented their proposed warehouse project for Mackes Road in Blakeslee. The 364,000 square foot building on 42 acres would host a company that could employ about 300. The building has all of its 60 loading docks on the riverside of the structure — away from neighbors. 298 parking spaces would be on the opposite side of the building, shielded by a wooded buffer. It would have a sprinkler system, and its own septic. Jim Petrucci came before supervisors with his team to explain the project and seek conditional land development approval so they can get started. With approval, the building could be finished in 2026, and occupied by a tenant. Discussed first was traffic, with an estimated 613 daily trips between employees and trucks. They are proposing improvements to widen Route 115 at Mackes Road to ease access, but no northbound turn lane. This was not well received, and
led to questions from several audience members. The Petrucci team explained their position that a left turn lane was not needed. It was pointed out that a proposal to develop the former Village Squire property, just south of the corners, required turning lanes. Discussion turned to a waiver request for spillway design change. The runoff would be sent onto the Dream Mile (Fishing) Club property. Attorney Rick Weist, a Tobyhanna Township resident and member of the Dream Mile Club, spoke against the proposal. Speaking for the Club, he said “We are concerned with the sanctity of the stream.” A particular concern was hot water runoff from the parking areas that could affect the cool temperature of the Tobyhanna Creek. A vote to approve the design waiver failed 3-1-1, Ed Tutrone in favor, Joseph Colyer abstaining. Discussion returned to the traffic issue. Neighbor Ron Habakus, who is not opposed to the project, was a clear voice about the northbound traffic on Route 115. He explained that when he goes to make a left turn into his property, northbound traffic passes him at full speed on
the shoulder. Various other audience members backed up Habakus’ statement. Petrucci said this can be revisited once a tenant is in place. Having completed their presentation, a vote was called for. On a motion to deny the conditional approval of a land development plan, it was 4-1, Colyer abstaining. Other business began with consideration of Resolution #5 of 2024, which changes who can represent Tobyhanna Township on the Pocono Mountain Regional Police Commission board. It passed unanimously — the change allows for three qualified citizens to serve, not restricted to just Board of Supervisors members. Discussion from the audience suggested at least one of the members should be a sitting supervisor. Penn Strategies, the township’s grant writing partner, would like to feature the township in their client spotlight section. Penn Strategies has found numerous grants for the township. This was approved. Reports included the Bureau of Fire, who have been busy with winter crashes and trees down. The Bureau — Station See TOBYHANNA TWP., page 4

Naomi, Timber Trails and Pinecrest. The decor reflects many of the things Michael loves about the Poconos — from wildlife to recreation. Pieces like a Scrabble board that spells out CAMP LIFE, and a miniature putting green with a Camp Life flag, help create the relaxing atmosphere he wants for his staff, as well as his customers. Broker Claire Dembinski, Michael’s mother, loves her new office space. She remembers just starting out in real estate the year Michael was born. Her career took various turns as he grew up. After his graduation with a degree in marketing from King’s College (her alma mater as well), he began his construction firm serving the Pocono Pines area. In 2015, they combined forces, creating Dembinski Realty. Michael is president, Claire is Broker and Realtor, and they are joined by Realtors Andie Gerhard, Peggy Witt and Mike Kummer. Many previous clients stopped by during the Open House, enthusiastic about the location, the decor, and the atmsophere. Michael invited them all — and everyone else — to stop in any time, for conversation, for coffee, for ideas. And of course, for help if they are looking to sell or buy a property in the Pocono Pines area.
Police Beat 1-17, PSP Troopers were dispatched to the 600 block of Towamensing Trail, Albrightsville, for a car blocking the driveway. On arrival, police learned the car was reported as stolen out of the state of Wyoming. A juvenile reported missing with the car was not located. The car was towed. 1/5, a 17 y/o Blakeslee area driver was westbound on Route 940 approaching the Blakeslee Corners

intersection at just before 4 p.m. She failed to stop at the intersection, running a red light and clipping the car that had the bad luck of being nearly through the intersection when the 17 y/o tried to blow through. She hit the second car hard enough to lift the rear-end off the ground, while her own car spun out. The driver of the struck vehicle asked for EMS transport. The 17 y/o was ticketed for the crash.

44 — has three vehicles in service. With the snowstorm on Sunday, there was a widespread power outage in the area, affecting 900 homes. The Emergency Services Building was being prepared to serve as a warming station but was not needed as the power was restored quickly (fears were repairs in two days). Supervisors approved paying off the loan on the aerial ladder truck, $32,375, from the Fire Tax fund on a 4-1 vote, Ed Tutrone opposed. Tutrone wanted to have the financial reports in first. Discussion about cleaning up the fire ordinance was tabled after some points made about recognizing both station 44 and Pocono Summit station 33, and about qualifications for chiefs. In reports, station 44 reported responding to 9 calls for the month. DPW’s report was unavailable as the crew was out snow plowing. All
equipment was reported in working order. The Pocono Mountain Regional Police reported an active month, within budgeted hours. The Pocono Mountain Regional Emergency Medical Services reported 670 incidents for the month, 131 of those in Tobyhanna. For the year, they had 7,177 incidents, 1,425 of those in Tobyhanna. They reported staffing is full. Plans are to place a transport unit at the Tobyhanna emergency services building. Regarding Short Term Rentals, as of January 10, there are 632 permits renewed. There is a cap to the total number of permits at 743 — this will be on the February agenda. Including inactive applications, there are 834 applications in the system as of January 10. There are also active renters who have no permit. Fines and court are headed their way. Wrapping things up, the township will continue its tree trimming program in 2024. Supervisors were unanimous in approving a phase schedule for the Pinecrest Lake development.

I enjoyed the continuing snows of last weekend. Between the two storms, five or six inches, easy to push out of the way…The warm up is going to be a way to melt some of the stuff we hadn’t shoveled out of the way until winter returns on Saturday. The weather put my Friday night worship into Zoom. We picked up some of a sister congregation’s worshippers — they had cancelled their services. Saturday we changed up our usual shopping routine and went a little farther away to Schuylkill Haven. One of the attractions is Bill’s Produce, with their amazing prices. For example, we got about 5 pounds of bananas for $1.50.
The other attraction is the Rutter’s Travel Plaza, right across from a brand new hospital outside of Orwigsburg. Rutter’s has really fine mint iced tea that we discovered on trips south, and always stop to buy. This is their closest location to our area, as of now. We listened to the NFL games on both days. None of our favorites won this round, so it leaves us cheering for the Chiefs. It was fun to see Eagles linebacker Jason Kelce having such a good time at the Buffalo game. The WBS Penguins split their games this weekend. League-leading Hershey protected a 1-0 lead to beat us. Hershey is our opponent again at this Saturday’s Fight
Cancer hockey game. Attend and cheer, then go out onto the ice after the game and paint names in honor and in memory as a donation to the American Cancer Society. UConn’s Lady Huskies are still cranking along. They beat a good Marquette team by 26 points. Also to note — TCU’s ladies basketball had so many injuries that they couldn’t field a team and had to forfeit. They put out a call throughout the university for anyone who might want to walk up and join the team. In between the winter weather, there have been some beautiful starlit nights. Happy and healthy stargazing.

medals. West High School sent representatives to Palmerton to participate in a Future Business Leaders of America regional conference.. Members of East High School’s Student Council discussed an upcoming fundraiser on March 15. This year’s prom theme will be the 1920s. West High School Student Council concluded a blood drive on January 18, partnering with MillerKeystone. February is Dental Health Month and members of West High School will assist dental hygienists on January 22 to spread awareness on dental health. West High Schools’ committee is working
on their prom theme of Midnight Masquerade along with fundraising. Monroe County Technical Institute [MCTI] Skills USA Council will participate in the upcoming district competition in April with over 60 events to show off their skills. Students in East Junior High School’s Glenwood Jazz Ensemble performed for the board. Named after the Glenwood Band from Tannersville, the ensemble will perform at a future Penguins game and a concert in March. When finished there was a large round of applause from Board members and each student received a certificate along with a group photo.
Business Manager Joseph Colozza introduced attorney Rich Campbell to discuss the district’s $48,000,000 to fund capital improvements and monitor interest rates. A motion to proceed with capital improvements and not exceed $48,000,000 passed. Another motion
for capital improvements at Clear Run Elementary Center also passed to begin in Spring. Colozza also gave updates on the districts preliminary budget, general fund budget and capital funds which were also approved with director Ana Lopez opposed.
