Kidder Planners see proposal for two new businesses in 940 corridor
Electronics, recreation at Mt. Pocono
by Pat AlbanoMount Pocono Borough Council opened its May 21 work session with a discussion of IT upgrades. The Council received estimates for installing two 65” TVs and a Zoom web camera, one behind the flag in the council room, and a second on the podium wall. A 50” TV will also be installed on the second-floor smaller conference room.
There was discussion about replacing the old bulle-

by Seth IsenbergDeveloper Pocono Estates Holdings came before Kidder Township Planners on May 1 to present a sketch plan for two buildings proposed to be located at the end of Industrial Drive off Route 940.
One of the buildings is on the site recently proposed to be for a pumping station for the PennEast Pipeline, which is not moving forward, and the other building would be across Industrial Drive. Both will front on Interstate 80.
The size of the property is 74 acres, to be split to host a 221,400 square foot structure to house a data center, and a 240,000 square foot structure to house a business that makes modular homes according to the presentation. Neither business projects large truck traffic flows. More detailed plans will be presented to the Planning Commission in the near future, as the project moves forward.

tin board at the borough entrance with a digital display which will be more dynamic and catch people’s attention on borough office locations. The grand total for installation is $18, 848.15.
Mayor Randy Altemose suggested lower TV costs since the units will not be used much, and putting the borough agenda up on display. Council member Ann Marie Harris stated, “I do not believe we should spend that much money,” and suggested Walmart to purchase the TVs. Council member Debra Fulton replied, “We are only doing this once, and it is in the budget.”
Council received three quotes from Rai and J’s Lawn Care, Nick’s Landscaping and Moore’s Land-
scaping for maintenance of the borough building and parks. Also discussed was a Mt Pocono Parks and Recreation budget request. The request stated, “There are three events in 2024 –Halloween House Decorating Contest, Trunk or Treat, and Holiday House Battle. Parks and Recreation is requesting a budget to run these events since they cannot solicit donations. A vote is requested at the June meeting.”
Borough Manager Marissa Duffy brought up the Parks Usage Form, stating, “We have no guidance on this— there are questions of insurance, liability and clean-up.”
Fulton asked who is responsible for scheduling and reservations, and suggested adopting a resolution to set up a procedure.
Council then turned attention to stormwater issues on Candlewood Road. The
mayor stated, “The Borough needs to put together a plan to see pricing. This will be a very costly project. Drainage is the Borough’s responsibility, but we have no real authority to go on residential property. Many of the older subdivisions did not have good drainage. Do we fix the problem and create another?”

Seth’S SightingS
Another week, another set of deer to dodge. One night this week, I encountered two deer standing in the center of the road so I rolled up on them slowly and they finally took the hint and leapt away. A little ways later, a single deer was up against a fence and decided to run across the road, again I rolled up behind it, urging it on. That same ride, I spotted another fox.
Other sightings include a raccoon on garbage night, and a good-sized skunk at the end of the block where we live, groundhogs, a turkey, young rabbits (too young to have the big white tail), and a wide variety
of birds including Canada geese with little gray goslings.
Ruth and I were out late a couple of nights and tried to see Northern Lights no luck.
At the end of the Memorial Day weekend (also my birthday weekend), we made an overnight dash into Maryland to be with family at a cemetery monument unveiling. The monument is completed and unveiled a year after a passing, per tradition. The cemetery event wrapped up just as the rains started. Our drive back to the house passed through a squall of heavy rain, which let up just as
by Seth iSenbergwe got to the house. Family gathered afterward for a nosh at the house, then most drove home ahead of the end-of-weekend traffic. It was good to see family, even for a sad event. We were back in the Poconos before dark.
With sports, I’m happy to cheer the Boston Celtics in the NBA finals. Ideally, they will win the first two at home to set the tone. We shall see but go Celtics. As for the NHL, the Stanley Cup finals pit Edmonton from Canada against the New York Rangers. This should be a great matchup, with games going into midJune. Canadians will be

Mountain laurel is beginning a showy early bloom in Hickory Run State Park and elsewhere around the Plateau. Roses are getting the sun and moisture they need. At the office, our big rose bush is blooming beautiful deep red. Nearby, there’s a wild rose blooming pink flowers. At home, it’s lilies and some pansies in a pot. Our mock orange plant is showing white flowers all over, its best bloom in years.
We are looking at adding tomatoes in a pot. I’ve lost the energy to plant and sow, so potted and hanging tomatoes are just my speed this year. I had energy to do some bushes trimming, cutting back on the forsythia as it throws growth where I don’t want it. Now if I can keep up. I am pushing to get short walks into my busy presummer schedule, working to rebuild stamina. The weather has mostly cooperated, giving us some lovely late spring days. So here’s to easy yardwork, sunshine and not-too-hot days, and good health to you.

Police beat
Pennsylvania State Police were out to a wide variety of crashes these last couple of weeks. Here is one:
5-24, 5:44 a.m., a box van and a Freightliner box truck collided when the box van was entering Interstate 80 East at the on ramp at MM284 got clipped in its left rear by the Freightliner which was traveling east on the highway. The impact sent the Freightliner down an embankment approximately 15 feet coming to final rest. The box van first spun, then went off the road and rolled over multiple times, coming to final rest on its driver’s side facing west. The Freightliner sustained minor damage to its front right passenger side. The box
by Seth iSenbergtruck sustained disabling damage to every angle of the vehicle. Neither driver was injured. The driver of the Freightliner was cited for the crash.
Other crashes were mainly fender benders.
5-24 8 a.m., PSP was called to a Fawn Road, Penn Forest Twp. home, about a woman in the road, acting erratically. Troopers arrived and found a 44 y/o Sciota woman she was drunk and disorderly. She was taken to the Carbon County prison to await a hearing.
5-26, PSP was contacted about two dogs getting loose on the 25th and again on the 26th, killing a neighbor’s chicken one day and injuring another chicken the other.
Troopers wrote up the dogs’ owner for a Dog Law violation.
PSP-F conducted sobriety checkpoints May 24 to 27.
A home under renovation on Nachez Road in Effort was entered via an unlocked sliding glass door. Many tools, supplies and a bathroom vanity were stolen some time between 4-26 and 28. PSP is investigating.
The reports also list a burglary attempt, and a home entry, both in Chestnuthill Twp.
Kidder Township Police were out 219 times in April.
Among the rest of the reports were a variety of no-injury accidents, a rearender in Brodheadsville, DUIs, credit card frauds, shoplifting and an investigation into a felon not allowed to apply for a firearm.

Deadline extended for property tax/rent rebate program
by State Rep. Jack Rader (R-Monroe)The deadline for senior citizens and Pennsylvania residents with disabilities to apply for rebates on rent and property taxes paid in 2023 has been extended to Dec. 31. Rebates will be distributed beginning July 1, as required by law.
Under current law, the Secretary of Revenue is authorized to extend the deadline for the Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program, if funds are available to make the payments. However, those who rely on this program should not have to play a guessing game to find out if they have until Dec. 31 to apply each year.
That’s why I have introduced legislation (House Bill 2129) that would remove this meaningless deadline and set it for Dec. 31 every year, providing some consistency for applicants.
The program benefits
eligible residents age 65 and older; widows and widowers age 50 and older; and people with disabilities age 18 and older. The income limit is $45,000 annually for homeowners and renters, and half of Social Security income is excluded.
The standard rebates range from $380-$1,000, depending on income, but supplemental rebates for certain qualifying applicants can boost the payment. The Department of Revenue automatically calculates
supplemental rebates. Applicants may file for the rebate online by visiting www.mypath.pa.gov. Those who still wish to file a paper application may obtain the forms, along with free assistance, at my district offices in Effort (570-6204341) and Blakeslee (570643-7683).
Claim forms (PA-1000) and related information also is available at www.revenue. pa.gov or by calling 1-888222-9190.
