HEAVY WIND AND RAIN throughout the area on Wednesday brought down trees in various locations. Crews were out cleaning up throughout the region, which fortunately did not have the extensive power outages that were experienced in Lehighton and the Lehigh Valley. Storms predicted for later in the week were less intense, though they did produce some significant rainfall. JP: Seth Isenberg

Bashore may serve Tunk. at EMA

Tunkhannock Township may be gaining an experienced Emergency Management Agency coordinator. Retired Pocono Mountain Police Department officer and former

Tunkhannock Police Chief Robert Bashore expressed interest in the position, sahing after 38 years in law enforcement, saying he’d like to learn about it from the other side. At the June 12 meeting, supervisors were pleased with the idea, and

urged him to submit a letter of interest.

Plans for expanding the townshiip park were discussed. Supervisor Kevin Weiand will meet with the Nature Conservancy to discuss additional use of See TUNK TWP, page 12

Retirees lauded at PMSB session

At the Pocono Mountain School Board meeting on June 26, Superintendent Dr. Elizabeth Robison praised East High School Special Ed Teacher Beth Karchner and Tobyhanna Elementary Center Teacher Shannon Wagner who recently retired. “I consider both as friends and collectively they bring 61 years’ service to the district.”

Robison also named Kinsley Shoprite’s Amazing Teachers for June Stacy Nalesnik, a seventh grade math teacher from East Junior High School and Amy Martin, AP world history teacher from East High School.

Robison closed out her report describing the district’s digital magazine, Hyped. “The magazine is a collaborative effort of both East and West High Schools and recognized for creativity,” Robison said.

“The Fall and Spring issues produced graphics, research, interviews, and photo shoots which highlighted the best of our high schools.”

Pocono Mountain West math teacher Tom Brogan presented Maggie O’Brien of the Make-A-Wish Foundation’s Scranton office with a check for $9,491,

proceeds from the Harlem Wizards fundraiser game. O’Brien stated, “There have been over 300 wishes granted to children. MakeA-Wish gives children with critical illnesses renewed strength to fight their illnesses bringing families closer together and uniting entire communities. Proceeds from this check will go directly to Make-A-Wish for a child in the Pocono Mountain School District.”

Tim Mulligan, president and CEO of Communities in Schools of Eastern PA addressed the board on his organization stating, “CIS is a national network in twentyseven states supporting 1.8MM students. We seek to keep kids in school, and to identify problems. CIS has funding opportunities and in Eastern PA we are in four counties and 13 school districts.” Board member Ronald Byrd asked what specifics CIS can perform. Mulligan responded, “we can provide individual plans for schools on how to decrease chronic absenteeism.”

After consulting with students, teachers and parents, the board agreed to change the schoolboard meeting times to 6 p.m. so that more individuals can attend.

New state law offers added protections for data breach victims

A new state law will help protect Pennsylvania consumers impacted by data breaches. Act 33 of 2024, which received unanimous support

in both the House and Senate, requires an impacted organization to provide a free credit report and one year of credit monitoring to affected consumers. It also strengthens notification requirements

and mandates notification of the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General if a data breach occurs in the Commonwealth.

The measure would cover instances in which an individual’s first and last name or first initial and last name have been accessed in combination with any of the following information: Social Security number, bank account number, or driver’s license or state ID number.

A record 3,122 data breaches occurred nationally in 2023, affecting hundreds of millions of Americans and costing billions of dollars, according to the Identity Theft Resource Center. It marked a 72% increase in

data compromises from the previous all-time high in 2021.

The law will take effect in late September.

Seth’s Sightings

Ups and downs describe the past two weeks well. We started with our Kia throwing its serpentine belt. It turned out that the alternator froze up. Our Subaru then wilted in the heat, and stopped running that same weekend, which left us without a working car. With the help of friends, we connected with a rental car by Tuesday in time for reporter work that night. By Wednesday, the Kia was back on the road, so we returned the rental.

With all the comings and goings, we sighted more variety of critters most notably deer (more deer dodge-em as deer strolled into the road ahead of us). We’ve sighted foxes, turkey,

some fawns, and in our own yard, a hummingbird, and a possum. Actually, our little dog Spookie found the possum and beat it up some before Ruth got her to leave it alone and come inside. The possum then played dead. Ruth announced that I was to remove the dead animal from out patio, but while we weren’t looking, it limped off out of the yard.

This past Monday night, I was listening to the car radio after Ruth went into the house and a skunk came up near the car. I opened the car door and made noise, then shut the door and hoped for the best the skunk scurried off. I then waited some more while listening to more of the BBC news feed on WVIA

FM. It looked all clear, so I let our other dog, Bull, out of the car, shooing him into our fenced yard, hoping the skunk was long gone.

A couple of Wednesday evenings ago, a heavy thunderstorm blew through the Pocono Plateau, blowing over trees and stripping others of leaves and branches. I saw big trees on lawns and on phone lines. The wind took apart some big old maples, exposing hollow areas. The storm knocked out electricity around the Plateau. We learned this when we drove through Lehighton after returning the rental car. The power was out along the 443 business corridor. We’d gone to shop Aldi’s mid-day

on Thursday and found the place dark. So were the fastfood locations. The Giant supermarket was open, likely on a generator for a while, but it looked as though its power was connected when we shopped. Reportedly, it took much of the afternoon to get the businesses back on.

We made the quick hour’s ride down the Turnpike to DeSales University to see a Shakespeare play, The Merry Wives of Windsor, performed by a cast of professionals assembled for the PA Shakespeare Festival. Merry Wives is a comedy, and the cast played that up well. The story is light and frivolous, and it was fun to be in the audience on opening night. The play continues through this Sunday, July 7. Go to pashakespeare.org for tickets. After Merry Wives wraps up, the Festival takes some time to get the Main Stage ready for The Color Purple which opens July 17, with performances to August 4. The Festival closes with the rarely performed Cymbaline, opening July 24 with performances through August 4.

30 Year Warranty on Material and Labor

We attended a celebration of life service to say goodbye to our friend, the Rev. Glen

Hueholt. He passed away this spring at the ripe old age of 97. His grandson told a story about how his grandfather loved to talk about the bears in the backyard of his home in Lake Harmony. Said grandson had only even seen a bear once when visiting his grandfather, but on their way to the service, they not only saw a bear, but it ran alongside their car for a bit. All of us here except our dogs are looking forward to seeing some fireworks displays over Independence Day weekend.

Next is NASCAR weekend at Pocono Raceway July 12, 13 and 14. I’ll be at the track

for the Friday Trucks race, Saturday’s Xfinity race, AND for NASCAR Sunday action. I have two pair of 100 level seats for Sunday’s race. To win a set, send me an e-mail by Monday night at journalseth@pa.metrocast. net, or drop a note by our office in White Haven by Monday. The 100 level has you up close to the racing action.

So, with all this written, I can write that I am enjoying being busy…especially the “Ups” of such a schedule. To all of you, best wishes for a fine Independence weekend, beautiful weather for race weekend, and good health to you all.

A Review Merry Wives players make the show

The Merry Wives of Windsor at the PA Shakespeare Festival is a fine performance of a silly play. Many of Shakespeare’s comedies are rich, with multiple layers of irony, satire and slapstick. Merry Wives is heavily weighted toward the slapstick.

The third act (end of the second, in this production) is particularly silly. Shakespeare ties up his loose ends neatly through a dance of sprites.

The actors did wonders with the weak material. The play’s setting and costumes evoke the era of Elvis and bobbysoxers, and music is interwoven to the point that the audience on opening night become part of the rollicking conclusion, clapping along enthusiastically with the band.

This play may not have the irony or complexity of Much Ado About Nothing, or the enchanted fun of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. But it is loads of fun, and well worth your time. It only runs through July 7, so visit pashakespeare. org to reserve your seats.

Obituaries

Plummer Sr. They recently celebrated 53 wonderful years together and have lived in the Pocono Mountains for the past 16 years, Born in Brooklyn, NY, she was the daughter of Cleo and Marie Hazel Middleton. Known as Jeri to all those who loved her, she enjoyed playing jazz music, online games, gardening, and connecting with friends on Facebook. Garden for Giving already harvesting

Summer is in full swing at the Garden; plants are thriving and some are ready to be harvested. Already, the kale, swiss chard, parsley and strawberries have been distributed to C.A.M.E. in Mountainhome, to PVEN, and to SFRC (Supplemental Food Resource Center) at Effort United Methodist Church. Thanks go to all the volunteers who made it possible, and a shout out to the youth from Our Lady Queen of Peace.

The Garden closed for a week in June to give everyone time to rest, but things are getting busy again, as weeding becomes an important chore.

The non-profit Garden of Giving has been called the best kept secret of the Poconos. But let’s get the secret out to friends and neighbors, because more volunteers are needed— someone to mow and weedwhack, people to mulch

and harvest, and also some people to work inside in the comfort of an office. Four hours a week to help with letters and emails would be so appreciated. A grant writer is needed, to apply for the very essential grant money which keeps the Garden afloat, and a volunteer coordinator, to

keep track of schedules. And more Board members are still needed. Your time is a gift.

Contact the Garden by phone: 570-402-1282 or email: GardenOfGiving@ gmail.com. Visit the website: www. theGardenOfGiving.org.

Blirb Studios-Wildlife Art

The month of July will feature the work of Caroline Fegley in the Kettle Creek art gallery with her show Blirb Studios-Wildlife Art.

Caroline has done work with organizations such as Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, Hawk Watch International, and Veracruz Rio de Rapaces as a raptor researcher. Her time in the field gives her plenty of

inspiration for her art. Her methodology usually does not include painting directly from photos, but recalling the experience and emotion of standing in nature.

The gallery at Kettle Creek is open Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and will be open Saturday, July 13, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Call 570-629-3061 with any questions.

Police Beat

PA State Police will put special traffic patterns into effect on Route 115 on NASCAR race Sunday, July 14. From about 11 a.m., traffic from Interstate 80 to the track will be one-way southbound until traffic into Pocono Raceway eases. Following the race, Route 115 to Interstate 80 will be oneway until the parking lots are cleared. The off ramp from I-80 (exit 284) will be closed following the race until traffic clears. Locals should be aware that there will be heavy traffic around the Raceway over the weekend so users of Route 115 should look for alternate routes.

An 81 y/o Albrightsville driver backed over a traffic island in the Kinsley’s ShopRite parking lot in Brodheadsville and crashed

Pennsylvania State Police–Fern Ridge is looking for the person who was seen dumping nine bags of garbage into a business’ dumpster on Route 534 in Penn Forest Township on 6-2.

A Jackson Township woman was scammed out of $600 when she bought tickets for an Eagles football game from someone on Facebook that she thought was her friend, 6-19.

6-26 at 4:28 p.m., a car crashed into a tree off Stony Mountain Road in Albrightsville. The driver fled before police arrived.

6-30, discovered at 8:18 a.m., thieves stole $451 worth of fish from the Big

Brown Fish Hatchery in Effort.

A 19 y/o Jackson Township man was driving his ’07 Jeep Patriot at high speed north on Route 715 when he missed a curve and went off the road and through various traffic signs before being stopped by a utility pole.

PSP-F sent the driver and his passenger off the St. Luke’s Monroe Hospital for care via ambulance. The driver was ticketed for the crash. The Jeep was towed.

Among the rest of the reports were businesses cited for having multiple false alarms, drivers in collisions including noinjury collisions with trees, guide rails, etc., various

no-injury fender benders and rear-enders, credit card frauds, shoplifting and investigations into persons not allowed to apply for a firearm.

Tar and chip work will return to Route 940 in Carbon County in August. The road is uneven and grooved ahead of the repaving, so take it easy from the Monroe County line to White Haven.

Proposed legislation

Jack Rader is introducing to provide additional compensation to municipalities that have large portions of land held by non-taxable entities such as the Bethlehem Water Authority generated conversation. Supervisors’ chair George Ewald noted that the township is 72% open space properties. Bethlehem Water Authority is 51% of that land, he said, but pays only $11,000 to the township in lieu of taxes.

Resident Alex Jackson

noted that the open space is a benefit to the township in the form of quality of life. He suggested the township do more to promote these areas, which are for the most part open to the public.

“It’s great to have this open space,” Ewald said. “But it would be nice to get some remuneration.” His beef is that the entities are selling carbon credits based on the open space, and making money on them without sharing with the taxpayers.

There was public interest in resuming a summer festival for the township. Several people volunteered to work on a non-political event for next year.

Next meeting is July 10.
