Two brand new fire engines were on proud display at the Penn Forest Township municipal building, ahead of August’s supervisors meeting.

Many of these volunteers spent long hours planning the finances for these two pieces, and designing the best possible trucks for the township’s safety. Township supervisors put together the numbers that allow the township budget to bear the payments for this apparatus — a total of over $1.4 million for the pair, to be paid for yearly for 20 years.

Food truck rules adopted by Kidder Township

by Pat Albano and Seth Isenberg Kidder Township supervisors voted to approve an ordinance regulating Food Trucks at their August 19 meeting. This action completes a months-long process, and now allows these businesses to operate between 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. when they have a license from the township ($300 per year).

There are rules about not impeding upon sidewalks, and about any trash they generate.

The resolution became effective August 20.

Police officer Jonathan Yaskiewicz has been working part-time for the Kidder’s Police Department. Police Chief Matthew Kuzma praised

Yaskiewicz for his “enthusiasm and work ethic,” then asked supervisors to appoint Yaskiewicz to a full-time position. They did so unanimously.

Kuzma asked for permission raise salary rates of part-time police officers to $22 per hour, and after 500 hours service to $23 per hour. “This will not affect my budget,” Kuzma explained. Supervisors approved the raises. They also okayed the paperwork to lease a new Ford Interceptor, which should arrive and be in use in September.

Supervisors gave final conditional approvals for the Mican lot reverse subdivision in Holiday Pocono, and the Parker lot line revision on Route 940.

got a conditional approval, and Blue Ridge Real Estate’s new boat storage building also got its conditional final approval.

Tuskes Homes at Golden Oaks’ request to change 13 double lots back to singles was given the o.k.

Rick Sutliff, developer of a proposed warehouse project on Route 940 near Blakeslee, spoke to supervisors about his plans. He continues to seek approval for a LERTA tax reduction to aid in getting construction started. Supervisors heard his presentation and took no action.

Supervisors approved permitting township fire police to

be available to help Jim Thorpe Police for traffic and pedestrian control in Jim Thorpe during October weekends.

In public comment, a citizen spoke about the recent fire in Blakeslee asking if the township had an adequate water supply and fire hydrants. He stated, “fire hydrants should be accessible to all including the surrounding communities.” He added an adequate water supply might have helped avert the Blakeslee fire.

Carbon County Tax Claim Bureau has payment for two township properties so a motion was made and approved to put those properties back on the tax rolls.

Kidder manager Suzanne Brooks stated the township has received $101,000 in funds for COVID relief. There will be discussion on guidelines for how best to use those funds. A citizen suggested that the board consider some of these COVID dollars go toward the volunteer fire companies.

Requests for proposals for installing traffic emitters for emergency vehicles to control the traffic signals at Route 940 at Moseywood Road, and at the Route 940 intersection with the Interstate 80 ramp onto the PA Turnpike will be sought.

Emitters can turn signals red as emergency vehicles approach.

Mountain Road connects to Route 534. The change makes that intersection 90 degrees – a “T” – instead of the angled approach that exists now.

Township engineer Michael Muffley explained that the developer had met all the SALDO requirements.

Bill Miller, of the township’s Planning Commission, explained their approval of the project was due in part to asking the supervisors to direct PennDOT to perform a traffic study on the intersection of Stony Mountain Road and Route 534. There was considerable discussion about Route 534 and how the approach to Stony Mountain Road, especially from the west, has traffic coming up too fast. Miller added that he’d like to see turn lanes.

With the vote tied, it was likely that the developers would file against the township in court. Chairman Meckes made the decision to locate Lignore by telephone. He did so, and then put the phone out so Lignore could listen to the presentations and arguments about the project — which were repeated for his benefit.

Township solicitor Thomas Nanovic explained that the Plan-

ning Commission’s request for indemnification about the Route 534 intersection could not be done. They had asked that the developer indemnify the township on accidents at the Route 534 intersection. Nanovic said a rule would have needed to have been part of the township ordinances to do so, and it is not.

When all was presented again, Lignore said that “I think that we have enough Dollar Generals in the area, (but) … if they do everything right, I cannot say no.”

Miller tried one more time to change Lignore’s mind, predicting that “there’s going to be accidents.”

On the second vote, the project was given conditional approval with Lignore, Meckes and Bartulovich in favor, Knappenberger and Cross opposed.

In another split vote, DeAngelo Brothers Inc. was hired to apply weed control on the Penn Forest Park walking path, and along the fence lines.

Meckes was opposed as he felt spraying the fences put more unneeded chemicals into the park. Cross, Bartulovich and Knappenberger voted in favor.

of 150 children to use the township park early in the month was referred back to the Park & Recreation board.

The request was turned down as the size of the group would exceed the park capacity, especially for bathrooms.

Supervisors also voted to add another $2,000 to the budget for park security, to be used once Blue Ridge Cable extends their cable line to the park. It was also noted that the new septic system in the park had solved the toilets backingup problem.

Another highlight of the meeting was a detailed discussion by the township’s new CPA firm over their draft of the township’s financial statements for last year.

In other business, fire police from either of the township’s fire companies were approved to assist Jim Thorpe Police with crowd control and at pedestrian road crossings during October high traffic weekends.

After nearly a decade of use, the old computer server at the township office needs an upgrade. Supervisors agreed to pay $6,793 to buy a new XEON 3.4 Quad Core processer and have Underdog Computing migrate the old data to it.

Supervisors also agreed to add allow another bulk item with the current garbage permit per customer, because of its 18-month term.

It was decided to share a suggested new social media policy for employees with the employees and the union in order to get input.

The township may have to wait until 2022 for the new truck it had ordered for the roads crew. The truck is on back order.

A Zoning Hearing was scheduled for August 19 about the cell tower erected without permits on 586 Stony Mountain Road.

Kidder Township monthly reports Lake Harmony Rescue Squad

The Lake Harmony Rescue Squad was out on 56 calls in July – 18 more than last year.

The two units were out for nearly 2,900 miles this past month. 48 of those calls were in Kidder, four in Penn Forest, two in White Haven, and two elsewhere. The ambulances were available for 25 fire alarms.

Kidder Police Kidder Police were again busy in July, with 215 total calls listed. The largest counts were 19 disturbing the peace, 17 medical emergencies, 14 fights and disputes and nine domestics, and 12 fireworks complaints. Police wrote 9 traffic tickets, issued two warnings, had seven traffic-related incidents, and two traffic accidents. The department

patrolled nearly 7,500 miles last month in their four police vehicles.

Code Enforcement Kidder Code Enforcement conducted 26 home inspections, 18 tree preservation

visits, made 15 stops about accumulation of rubbish and 13 more about storing waste in proper containers, checked on 11 other violations, looked at four high grass and weeds properties, and investigated two abandoned motor vehicles.

Mark Peterson’s art collection featured at HAL exhibit The Hazleton Art League welcomes Lake Harmony resident Mark Peterson back to our area after 14 years in Los Angeles. Happy to return to the lake, Mark brings with him an extensive art collection amassed during his years on the West Coast. Mark’s professional career as a hotel concierge for over 30 years was split between Manhattan and L.A. When living in Los Angeles, he would go to local galleries and world-class museums for inspiration, then head to various shops and art fairs to see what treasures were waiting for his discerning eye.

Mark would often see the same artists and vendors on his frequent visits to the Melrose Trading Post in L.A.’s Fairfax District. There were certain vendors who would

regularly have interesting works of various kinds--pho-

tographs, sculptures, works on paper, paintings, etc. for

sale. What you will see at the Hazleton Art League’s “Made in L.A.” exhibit this September are works by artists primarily from the Los Angeles Latinx and African American communities with genres that include street art, outsider art, abstracts, landscapes, and more.

Many of these artists have never been formally exhibited and are unknown outside of Southern California.

Featured artists include Mazo, a painter with a bold, almost abstract style, and Kellybrew, whose mix of popart, folk art, cartoon characters and abstract landscapes are expressed through various media (see piece at left).

Santa Barbara-based assemblage artist Dan Levin is well represented in the collection, as is emerging artist Sarah K.

Flora whose self-portraits and paintings of friends are noted for the intricate patterns she incorporates into her work.

Peterson built his collection with the idea of introducing little-known and undiscovered artists to the public. Most of the works in the exhibit will be available for purchase at prices that start at $25. A portion of the proceeds will help fund the Hazleton Art League.

The show will run from Friday, September 3, through Sunday September 26. The opening, from 6-8 p.m. on September 3, is part of Downtown Hazleton’s First Friday celebration. There will be light refreshments and Mark will provide a brief gallery talk around 7 p.m.

Seth’s Sightings

The last two weeks, I’ve been sick so I spent too much time indoors either reading, or watching videos. I missed some events including, due to last Sunday’s rain, the Air Show at Pocono Raceway.

I spent that day watching raindrops versus airplanes as Sunday’s performances were cancelled. Hurricane Henri really doused our area.

By Monday, we saw just how much damage the heavy rains did hereabouts. Our home is over a small spring, and we get water in the basement when there’s heavy rain. We were

just dried out when Henri sent its band of rain towards us. As I write this, there’s still some mopping up to be done.

The heavy rain filled up the lake behind the Francis Walter Dam. The Lehigh River itself was running fast on Monday and Tuesday.

Ruth and I have been reading a cute book – A Scourge of Pleasantries, plus are sampling from a range of authors from Louis L’Amour to Terry Pratchett. Martin Walker’s The Coldest Case has arrived to keep us more company as we each recover.

We’ve been enjoying freshpicked peaches and the beginnings of fall apples. We intend to go out and get some ripe pears this week, as the warm weather and extra rain has really been good for the crops.

We sighted a very large Great Blue Heron that was standing at the shallow end of Lake Harmony. Ruth got some pictures from as close as she could get.

I am ready for the big college football kickoff weekend. Penn State starts its season a week from now, on September 4 on the road versus Wisconsin. I’ll see what other teams will be worth cheering for as the season unfolds. As for the pros, I’m thinking about cheering for Tampa Bay, Philly and New England (old habits…).

I box-score-surfed sports this week to pass some time, seeing if the Phillies are playing good ball again, and seeing what good results can be found in other sports. Elena Delle Donne’s comeback game was exciting and here’s hoping she remains healthy.

The 70s Flashback Band has a two-day, two show booking at Knoebels over Labor Day Sunday and Monday. It should make for a great wrap up for the daily operating season there. It will be nice to be back on the road again.

The Bloomsburg Fair brochure arrived on my desk late last week. I’m already counting the days toward the Fair’s opening on Sept. 24. We usually spend an afternoon and evening during its 10-day run.

The Celtic Fest in Bethlehem also starts on the 24th for three days and we have a list of favorite bands we’d like to see that are on the big free stage.

Family Promise of Carbon County hosts fundraiser for children and families Family Promise of Carbon County, Carbon County’s only nonprofit emergency shelter addressing family homelessness, has announced its Fourth annual Cycle-Out-Homelessness Event in partnership with All One Charities.

starting at the Weissport Trailhead heading north to Glen Onoko in Jim Thorpe and back.

This year organizers have decided to give participants the option to ride or walk.

Walkers can choose their distance and walk south on the newly renovated Trail, which allows bikers and pedestrians.

This event, which will be held on October 9 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., calls on the community to ride their bikes or walk the trail in order to raise awareness about the issue of homelessness, and raise needed funds for shelter expansion.

Food, DJ, basket raffles and chances to win trips to the Caribbean are all featured.

In America, over 16 million children live in households where there is severe food

insecurity and insufficient basic necessities to survive.

Families account for over 35% of the nation’s homeless population and, astonishingly, 51% of homeless children are under the age of 5 and, therefore, too young for school and not counted in annual statistics. Lack of affordable, quality housing, unemployment, and poverty are the three most cited reasons for family homelessness and the numbers are growing every day in every community across the country.

In Carbon County, the number of people experiencing homelessness tripled between 2019 and 2020, and the need for more shelter services is paramount. The vision of Family Promise is to be able to meet the needs of more fam-

ilies, who call every day, that the organization doesn’t have the current capacity to help.

But with a strong network of host and support churches, and a leadership role in the homelessness task force and continuum of care in Carbon County, Family Promise has a strong and proven track record to successfully expand its mission.

Through private and public sources of support, the agency will be purchasing a rectory and church in Nesquehoning at 140 West Mill Street.

The rectory, specifically, will house the family shelter which is three times the size of the current day center and is equipped to serve a minimum of 7 families at a time (compared to the current maximum of 4 families).

A core of trained volunteers from our interfaith network as well as support staff will provide services at this static location instead of utilizing a church rotational model.

Food, fellowship, emotional support, life skill classes and securing quality, permanent housing will continue to be the focus of work as it has been since 2009.

Proceeds from event will help Family Promise of Carbon County continue its vital mission of helping families experiencing homelessness in Carbon County communities. they receive notification that a benefits application has been filed in their name. Pennsylvania’s L&I utilizes numerous fraud-detection measures, including using virtual identity verification vendor ID.me to verify the identities of all new unemployment applicants.

Since the new UC benefits system went live June 8, they have prevented approximately $1 billion in state and federal dollars from being paid out to fraudsters, working with the FBI, Homeland Security and additional law enforcement agencies, the state treasury and the state attorney general’s office, to identify and block new fraud methods and stop fraud attempts.

“Realize it can happen to you,” said Criminal Investigation Director Major Jeremy Richard. “If you have been a victim, don’t be embarrassed.

Instead, report it to law enforcement. The sooner law

enforcement knows, the better the chances are of recovering your money and catching the scammers.”

Stealin’ 8-18, A Brodheadsville couple, 61 and 53, were scammed when trying to buy a dog via Facebook. The victims forwarded $1,500 in Visa gift cards through Zelle, but did not receive the dog. PSP-Fern Ridge was contacted.

8-16, an Effort woman received three checkbooks and a bank card in her name. She had not applied for any account from this bank. She reported this to PSP. This was a second incident from the same bank — an unsolicited account had been opened at that same bank about a week earlier.

8-15, a Maroon KIA Sorrento was stolen from a Parker Trail, Penn Forest Twp. driveway between 3 p.m. on the 14th and 2:30 a.m. on the 15th. The car was unlocked, but the keys were kept in the house. PSP is investigating.

PennDOT News A sweeping crew will be on Interstate 80 in eastern Monroe County this week, doing night time work. There will be lane restrictions.

Some base repair work is on the schedule for Route 423 in Coolbaugh Twp., with crews out during the day. There will be lane restrictions where the work is being done.

A litter cleanup crew is planned for Interstate 80 in both Carbon and Monroe Counties this week, along the main road and on the ramps.
