BRUSH FIRES kept local fire departments busy the last few weeks, as hot temperatures and dry and windy weather combined to create the perfect conditions for fires to spread rapidly. The area above, along Route 940 near Harmony Beverage, was on fire and creating smoky conditions at the same time that over 4,300 acres burned near White Haven, and part of the Northeast Extension of the PA Turnpike was temporarily closed because of poor visibility. Recent rains have helped, and burn bans in Tobyhanna and Coolbaugh Township had been cancelled as of press time, though Tunkhannock Township’s was still on.

Mayor Randy Altemose wished Aleksich good luck but added, “Whatever plan you have detailed be sure the Scoutmaster signs off.” Fulton added, “Your plan must be approved by council before you can start fundraising for the project.” Struckle echoed the mayor sentiments stating, “Get your blueprint back to us.”

MPMA board chair Matthew Hensel discussed the MPMA lease, stating he spoke with the accountant, and “There are security system issues to upgrade, and we are motivated to resolve

TOBYHANNA TOWNSHIP SUPERVISOR PROVEN LEADERSHIP

Paid for by the Candidates

A MESSAGE FROM

TOBYHANNA TOWNSHIP SUPERVISOR INCUMBENT CANDIDATES

DAVID CARBONE and BRENDON CARROLL

Are proud and dedicated to work with our fellow distinguished board members and township staff to promote a reasonable, balanced, fiscally responsible and bipartisan approach to protect the safety, health and welfare of the Tobyhanna Township communities in all township business.

TOWNSHIP IDEALS that we remain committed to, with the results of our proven leadership:

The Township:

- has not had a municipal tax increase in more than 12 years

- operates and maintains a balanced budget

- has significant reserve funds established for capital improvements and emergencies

- has no debt, and has a strong borrowing capability

- pension fund is fully funded, and in a positive financial position

Township Supervisors:

- donate their salaries to further support various township organizations such as Pocono Mountain Regional Police Foundation, Pocono Summit Volunteer Fire Company, Tobyhanna Township Bureau of Fire, Pocono Mountain Regional EMS, Pocono Lions Club, Blakeslee Community Center, Clymer Library

- have selected and employed an experienced, professional, well-rounded staff to assist in managing all aspects of township business

- have made appointments of experienced residents to planning commission and zoning hearing board positions to present fair and reasonable recommendations to the board.

- have planned and completed the hike and bike trail, 940 bike lane, dog park, and progressed phase1 of the I-380/940 redesign, planned parks upgrades, and formed Tobyhanna Township Bureau of Fire for the benefit of residents and taxpayers

The question all township residents must ask themselves when going to the polls is: Do I want proven leaders who provide the township with fiscal responsibility, accountability and involvement, or unknown candidates without our combined years of hands-on knowledge and experience?

Tutrone continued, and Kerrick directed him to leave the meeting. Tutrone exited with a police officer escort still working to make his points.

Prior to the argument, Tutrone asked again for a meeting between station 41 and the township, and was answered by township solicitor Harry Coleman that contacts need to be through the attorneys involved, due to litigation.

Named to Phi Kappa Phi

Nicole Stabile of Blakeslee was recently initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective all-discipline collegiate honor society. Stabile was initiated at Kutztown University.

Stabile is among approximately 25,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni to be initiated into Phi Kappa Phi each year. Membership is by invitation only and requires nomination and approval by a chapter. Only the top 10 percent of seniors and 7.5 percent of juniors are eligible for membership. Graduate students in the top 10 percent of the number of candidates for graduate degrees may also qualify, as do faculty, professional staff and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction.

Plans to put Tobyhanna Township Fire Company station 44 into service are moving ahead. Volunteers have stepped forward.

A ban on open burning in the township is in force. (It has since been lifted.)

Other business included unanimously confirming the appointment of Crystal Butler as assistant township manager, increasing township manager Robert Bartal’s debit card limit to $2,500 (for items where payment can save the township money), and the Planning Commission’s recommendation for a hearing for an Act 167 amendment.

Manager Bartal reported that Penn Strategies has secured another $15,000 grant for the township park. The money will be used to buy a UTV for park maintenance purposes. Assistant manager Butler explained that there are 500 applications for Short Term Rentals in hand of 637 in process. Of these, 128 licenses have been issued, and 26 were “almost done.” Asked about others, she said there are 130 STRs known to be operating (without the township license) and there is a process underway to contact each and every one.

He has worked as a grave-digger, television cameraman, short-order cook, nuclear missile security guard, gas station attendant, ice cream truck driver, skilift operator, factory worker, furniture delivery man, amusement park worker and greenhouse laborer—all before the age of 25. While studying music composition in college, he inadvertently stumbled upon an international opera career that forced him to leave a promising future as a song-

writer behind. Cut to 15 years later, and after a vocal cord surgery that left him no longer able to meet the demands of opera, Dan returned to doing what he does best— writing and performing his own songs.

Since his crossover from classical to popular music, Dan has hit the ground running, with six critically acclaimed albums already under his belt, including his 2011 release Dying Breed making The Philadelphia Inquirer’s list of Top 10

Albums of 2011.

In 2016, Dan added “Author” to his list of credentials, with the release of his first book, Adventures in Grocery Shopping, which made The Philadelphia Inquirer’s list of Best Books of 2016. He followed that up with his second book, again a compilation of essays about his life experiences, Street Urchins, Poets and Dream Visitors.

Dan’s live shows include readings from his books in addition to singing songs. The readings have become a fan favorite and a staple of

his live performances. At the Clymer Library, he’ll read from his books: Adventures in Grocery Shopping, Street Urchins, Poets and Dream Visitors, and his most recent book, Coop the Magic Pug, a children’s book about his beloved dog Coop. The readings will be interspersed with songs from his six critically acclaimed albums, including Heartland, as well as from his new release, Legacy.

PMSB hears impressive Odyssey of the Mind presentation

A group of elementary students presented the Pocono Mountain School Board with what they learned from Odyssey of the Mind during the April 19 school board meeting. Odyssey of the Mind includes competition and scoring. Students make props and solve their own problems. Director Ronald Byrd remarked. “This is the best presentation this year and we have had many.” Board

president Marion Pyzik commented, “ I did not see any nervous students at all and what a great job.”

Pocono Mountain School District Superintendent Dr. Elizabeth Robison opened the meeting asking for a moment of silence for a student recently killed in a car accident.

In happier news, she noted West High School student artwork. She also mentioned the East High School cast and performance of Momma Mia along with

their National Honor Society who recently held a Night of Science Ceremony. The Odyssey of the Mind team advanced to the world finals. The superintendent closed out her report stating, “There will be a pre-k summer session held for incoming kindergarten students…The focus will be on academics; appropriate classroom behavior and socialization, with snacks provided.”

West High School Student Council discussed the prom and their final blood drive

and an upcoming 5K to be held at Danbury Park with all proceeds going to Big Brothers and Sisters.

The Weber Group recently completed a third-party audit of school district infrastructure and waterrelated problems. Critical areas include leaks and water problems in the gymnasium. The inspection generated a lengthy proposal of six critical areas within the school infrastructure. Additionally, the school needs 30,000 new bricks.

The work will require seven months to complete at a cost of $1.9 million. Financial Officer Joseph Colozza stated, “the district has a $7-million reserve available for this project.” Director Rusty Johnson added, “We have talked about this for years, and I make a motion to approve the $1.9 million,” which passed. Ronald Byrd and Ana Lopez were named voting delegates for the PSBA delegate assembly meeting.

Seth’s Sightings

Our somewhat warm weather has encouraged lots of April flowers around the Pocono Plateau. In our yard our pinks are blooming, our lilacs are about to start, and our flowering cherry trees are putting on a show just in time for the threat of frost. So these next few days will be a bit of hoping that our particular flowering plants are spared.

I am planning to do some lawn and yard work, depending on how my chemo is going. So far, it has knocked me back and made me tired, but, I have a week off before it starts the next cycle. Overall, I am doing o.k.

Saturday night has been

hockey night for us for these last few months, so with our Penguins out of the playoffs, we are free for other activity just in time for warmer weather. Last week, we attended a fundraiser dinner (won a basket at their raffle, too). Coming up this weekend is a spring celebration, and next is Wine on the River we’ll not be missing hockey much. Also coming up is Knoebels season; the amusement park opens for weekends the 29th & 30th. On the 7th, WVIA members have free rides all day (it’s not too late to join…). Ruth is still on crutches as her broken leg heals, so I’m hoping she’s off them by the 7th.

In sports, having Aaron Rodgers at the Jets might be a revival for them…Joe Namath all over again. I’m excited as a Patriots fan for the matchups. I still see the Eagles as THE team this fall. I enjoyed the hole-inone at the Australian stop of the LIV Tour excitement, cheers and beers… Also this weekend was NASCAR’s spring stop at Talladega great racing and a memorable crash in the Xfinity race. As an afterthought, NBA and NHL and AHL playoffs are underway, which I follow with a brief internet look for scores and details.

About that internet look, I do use ESPN, which is coming up for a huge staff

trimming. ESPN became too big, and it’s too costly, but…I remember its beginnings as a little cable network in Connecticut broadcasting college sports, so it is amazing to see how big they got. They’ll be fine after the cuts, perhaps better.

I hope gas prices have stopped going up. Ruth and I want to do more driving as our area greens up for spring. This week’s sightings only included a single wild turkey, rabbits invading our fenced back yard where our dogs roam, newborn lambs at a local farm, and a woodchuck making a home under a neighbor’s porch which should be a surprise for all

concerned when they come home.

The Pocono Air Show is to be held May 27 and 28, Saturday and Sunday afternoons at Pocono Raceway. I have some Sunday tickets to give away send in a card or drop a note off at our office. Include your phone # and e-mail.

Mark your calendars, the Weatherly HillClimb is June 10 and 11, the Celtic Fling is June 2325, Briggs Farm fest July 6-8, and Pocono NASCAR weekend not too far in the distance on July 21-23. Best wishes for good health to you all.

You can help keep our creeks — and drinking water

If you want to keep our creeks and streams safe, and have an hour or so just once a month, come find out about being a StreamWatcher.

StreamWatcher Training

Training and information sessions will be held at Brodhead Creek Heritage Center at 1539 Cherry Lane

Road, near Analomink on May 20 at 10 a.m.

Naturalist Darryl Speicher will talk about the program and how you can help. Almost 100 sites are monitored throughout the watershed— one of them near you.

Get outdoors and do something good. Call the

Brodhead Watershed Association at 570 8391120 for more information. For information on what StreamWatchers do, go to https:// brodheadwatershed.org/ wp-content/uploads/ Streamwatcher_flier_2022. pdf

PLUMC seeking flea market vendors

You can help protect pure, safe water in the Brodhead watershed. Call 570 839-1120 — become a StreamWatcher.

The pure creeks and streams of the Brodhead watershed define our lives. You can’t go half a mile in our area without seeing a creek or hearing water. It’s so much a part of every day life, we take it for granted. And yet, erosion, pollution and just plain not caring can

change that in a New York minute.

StreamWatchers are the volunteer watchdogs who protect our pure water by visiting our creeks and streams once a month—and documenting the facts about changes in water quality and water quantity.

Vendors are now being accepted for the 19th Pocono Lake United Methodist Church Community Flea Market to be held rain-or-shine on Saturday, June 10, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. $15 will reserve your table/space on the Green in front of the church, located at 1188 Route 940. Please contact the church office at 570-646-2650 to reserve your table or for more information. Prepayment for vendor tables/space is required. Checks may be made out to “Pocono Lake United

Methodist Church”.

The church is located 4.5 miles east of Blakeslee at 1188 Route 940. The United Women of Faith sponsor the event, and everyone in the community is invited to participate. It is always well-attended by neighbors, vacationers, racing fans, and folks simply driving by on Route 940.

The PLUMC Flea Market is a fun way to start the summer and is greatly looked forward to by the entire community. There will be a wide variety of items available to

purchase, including crafts, artifacts, home décor, and a White Elephant table that features interesting “treasures” and excellent buys. It is always an enjoyable day perusing the tables, making memorable purchases, and greeting and welcoming friends and neighbors.

United Women of Faith will again feature their delicious home baked goods for sale. Please contact the church office at 570-6462650 for more information.

Winter Schedule

From the Statehouse Free Federal Student Aid application (FAFSA) deadline is May 1

by State Rep. Jack Rader (R-Monroe)

The Pennsylvania Department of Education

is encouraging students and families to submit their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by Monday, May 1.

The FAFSA is an important tool for students seeking postsecondary education opportunities, whether they’re stepping onto campus for the first time or returning in the fall. Current and prospective undergraduate and graduate students should submit the FAFSA to the U.S. Department of Education to determine eligibility for federal student aid. Learn more at www.studentaid.gov.

By filling out the FAFSA, students can receive federal

grants, work study, and loans for each year of postsecondary education. Many states and colleges award aid to postsecondary students based on federal aid eligibility, and states and many colleges will award their own aid based on that data.

All first-time applicants enrolled in a community college; business, trade, or technical school; hospital school of nursing; designated Pennsylvania open-admission institution; or nontransferable twoyear program do have an extended deadline the first year they file: August 1, 2023.
