PMWHS students get hands-on lesson in safety

& photos

SADD, Students Against Destructive Decisions, held a safety carnival at Pocono Mountain West High School on Friday, May 5. Eight stations were set up for students to interact and learn.

Senior Mychaela Dunham noted that this event “brings awareness to drunk driving and it is good to learn things you don’t get to in a regular curriculum.”

Fire company tankers were on hand to allow students to use the hoses to knock over orange cones and get a feel for the pressure of the water. Jolene Fette from J&J Towing showed students how to remove and replace tires and noted this “helps them be aware of emergency services.”

State Trooper Ian Hopkins volunteered for the event to inform students not just about traffic safety but to have hands on experience with procedures, arrests and equipment. Beer goggles scarily simulated

intoxication with a feeling of disorientation. Hopkins stated, “The main message is that we are a resource for the community that is available 24/7.”

Senior RJ Davis had an opportunity to use different tools to learn about forcible entry from fireman Zachary Janes. There were different tools, padlocks

and a demonstration for the students.

Beth Moloughney from State Farm Insurance has been doing driving simulators for 20 years so

that “the next generation understands there are tragic consequences to everyone” if driving is impaired.

Whitaker described the simulator as “realistic” as his car was spun out of control and he had to figure out how to regain control.

The students had a valuable opportunity to learn hands on about driving and safety.

Paul Steinruck, SADD advisor, explained that it took a few months to put this together with the leadership of seniors Ryder Bray and Regan Carlson. “They decided to bring the community in. The key to success is those people who all offered free services.”

Students were given a Safety Carnival “passport” which were stamped at each of the eight stations. This “passport” allowed them students to have free

cotton candy, snow cones and popcorn. Completed passports could be put into a box for a drawing for free tickets to Kalahari Waterpark.

Mt. Pocono manager Joshua Walker

moving on to Harrisburg job

Mount Pocono Borough Manager Joshua Walker will leave his position effective June 16, having accepted a job in Harrisburg. Council president Don Struckle stated at the May 2 meeting, “We will work hard to advertise and find a replacement.”

Struckle turned to Walker and said, “You will be in Harrisburg, don’t forget Mt. Pocono and help us out if possible.” All Council members stated it was a pleasure working with Walker.

Council passed a number of resolutions at the

meeting. They ratified the Teamsters Local Union 773 and Mt. Pocono Collective Bargaining Agreement through December 21, 2025. Council also approved the following:

• Resolution 4 of 2023 approving the Travel Signal Maintenance Agreement as presented.

• Resubmission of the DCED Greenways, Trails, and Recreation Grant Application in the amount of $585,085 for Mt. Pocono Memorial Park improvements.

• Sparkle Car Wash Performance Guarantee release request-$481,920.

• Purchase of M1 drainage pipes and couplings for stormwater work$3951.

• Advertising amendment to repeal Ordnance 5 of 2021-Building Height Amendment.

• Acceptance of the Planning Commission 2022 Annual Report.

• Setting Community Yard Sale dates as follows: May 19-21; June 23-25; July 28-30; Aug 25-27.

• Appointing Dennis Noonan as an alternate member on the Planning Commission. One additional item for consideration, purchase of a Digital LED Sign from Delcom Graphics for $21,936.44, was tabled.

Council changed the May 16 Work Session date to May 23 because of election day. Council will hold the July regular meeting on Wednesday July 5th due to the holiday.

Struckle stated, “The borough is looking for parttime seasonal worker to help out with sidewalks and the ballpark.”

Mayor Randy Altemose had concerns with people blocking residents’ driveways stating, “access to property is not a borough responsibility.” He asked if an ordinance was in place and suggested the manager and solicitor should look into it.

Walker noted that “Commercial vehicles are being parked in zoning areas and when residents were notified, many were unaware that this was not allowed.”

We Improve The Lives We Touch

"Jessica Ouellette was great, the staging of the house was wonderful and it was beautiful. She gave us very good ideas and she had excellent suggestions and worked hard to make the sale work. We appreciate it and would do it again."

-Robert & Rose

"We contacted Arlene and Neal Van Hine in August, just to get an evaluation on the property and suggested asking price. When we got the offer on the house, Arlene was definitely working to get the best arrangement for our situation. We think that their experience and knowledge were very valuable in completing a successful sale of the property."

-Gerry and Gene

"Jennifer Harvey made buying a house as simple as tying a shoe. She brought a very up beat and positive energy to a normally stressful process."

-Gabriel

"Amie Cosentino represented me years ago when I purchased my home in Arrowhead Lakes. She was so phenomenal that when I decided to sell the house, she was without question my first call. She made both buying and selling an easy and enjoyable experience. Amie is the BEST!"

- Andrew

"It was a great experience having Kenneth Garzzillo and Allan Maxey as my brokers. The process went smooth. Wouldn't ask for anyone else. Thank you!!"

-Rosalie

"Dee Kasarda is so knowledgeable of the area and market, and the specifics to many of the local HOAs. She clearly wants all of her clients to be HAPPY with the sale transaction - you are not just a client to come and go. She truly works so hard to make things happen!"

Arborist donates services to clear view at The Knob

“The higher the better” is one of Ike Olson’s mottos. Olson, owner of Keystone Tree Specialists, has been cutting trees for 53 years. Every year for the last 12 years on Arbor Day, the last Friday of April, Olson donates a day of tree cutting services.

This year the services were

donated to the borough of Mount Pocono at The Knob, an expansive overlook at the edge of town.

Having grown up poor, Olson knew education was the key. After being drafted and serving four years in Vietnam he went to Syracuse University on the G.I. Bill and pursued a degree in forestry.

The words of an economics professor inspired him to start his own business. Those words, “Profits are better than salary or wages,” led him to take business courses as well. Olson was one of the first certified arborists in Pennsylvania.

All of his business comes from word of mouth and 99% of the work he does is residential. On Arbor Day he finds a nonprofit organization that could use tree cutting services. In the past he has used the day to help churches and the Boy Scouts.

Five crew members worked on clearing trees at The Knob so that the view is not obstructed.

The crew, including Olson himself, took the entire day to clear this stretch of trees. The trees are left there to

naturally decay.

“My love of the work keeps me healthy, I’m a Viking.” said Olson.

Western Pocono Trout Unlimited

Trout Festival to highlight Lehigh River and all things trout

The first White Haven Trout Festival sponsored by Western Pocono Trout Unlimited will be held at the White Haven Library and adjacent Railyard Park, 121 Towanda St., White Haven, on Saturday, June 3, from noon to 6 p.m. (rain date June 4). The public is invited to this free, family friendly event that celebrates the Lehigh River trout fishery and all the waters of the Poconos.

As the Lehigh River flows from its source near the town of Gouldsboro in the northern Poconos through White Haven and on to the junction with the Delaware River at Easton, wild trout can be found. White Haven is uniquely located in the middle portion of the river and has long been a focal point for river commerce, recreation, culture and history.

Western Pocono Trout Unlimited is pleased to present this event at the beautifully restored and historic White Haven Library/Community Center and Railyard Park. The festival highlights the importance of conservation and promotes the great work that both public groups and local businesses do in maintaining the special quality of the river’s trout fishery that is so important in providing recreation

and economic opportunities to all the communities in the Poconos.

A variety of exhibitors will be showcasing their work that includes: conservation organizations, fly shops, river guides, artists, crafts people, expert trout fishing speakers, natural resource groups among others.

Personal fly tying and fly casting demonstrations will be given throughout the day, along with nature hikes on the nearby Delaware and Lehigh Canal river trail. Food and music will be available.

The event will appeal to newcomers to the river and fly fishing, as well as veteran fishermen.

Call 570-454-4862 or the library at 570-443-8776 for more info or if your outdoor organization is interested in setting up a free table provided by the library as an exhibitor.

The day long event is free. Help us celebrate the great natural resource that the Lehigh River trout fishery represents to the Pocono communities like White Haven, the rich history of trout fishing here and the protection of the river for future generations.

Seth’s Sightings

On our way home as the sun began to set, we came round a corner and I saw what appeared to be a moving black plastic bag, until it picked up an edge, and we saw that this was the head of a young skunk. It wisely stopped at the road as we passed.

Also along our journeys this week, we sighted a great blue heron who was kneedeep in the pond by the gas company.

And then Ruth had a close encounter of the deer kind as the car she was inturned into the alley between the Union Cemetery and the Schwab School in Weatherly, and found two deer grazing. They moved, grudgingly.

On a late night return to our home this week, we

encountered a very large black bear in a remote area. It had just come up to the road and saw our vehicle, then turned tail and headed back into the woods.

This weekend was dry and sunny, which meant it was going to be one for lawn moving. My old lawn mower has bitten the dust buy my electric weed whacker is still a trooper, and it handled most of the high grass around the dog yard. I’m working to preserve some of the wildflowers, and there’s a patch of little blue blossoms mixed with some violets and some of our mint that has flowered.

The dogs appreciated the change.

I’m beginning to shape

our forsythia now that the flowers are done. I like it to be partly a hedge, but as everyone who owns forsythia knows, the bush tends to throw branches in every direction. With the warm days, our purple lilac is putting on quite a show, a nice compliment to the cherry trees up front, but what’s really exciting is that the apple trees are blooming. While I’d prefer that they would bloom later, because there’s still a threat of frost, these trees have responded well to the pruning I’ve done, and I’m hopeful for some edibles later this summer. Our big event recently was attending the Wine On the River festival in Lehighton.

This was the first time we visited this event, and we had a good time, finding it easily walkable.

I tuckered out and retreated to a tent to rest, but Ruth and our friends browsed, tasted and purchased from many of the dozen wineries represented. We very much look forward to next year’s event. We’re also looking forward to the big wine festival at Split Rock in June. Happy Mothers’ Day to all who celebrate.

Ruth’s mobility improves daily. She was strong enough that we were able to go to the Allentown Farmer’s Market, where we picked up Polish and Mediterranean foods.

We are mourning the passing of my 99-year-old Aunt Joan. Our Sunday plans were tossed and replaced by a trip to Princeton New Jersey to sit shiva with family.

That Sunday was a foul day weather-wise. I was up early to take photos of the start of the Jim Thorpe Running Festival’s marathon, which began just up from the Journal’s office in downtown White Haven. At the hour there was some light rain, and even hints of sunshine when the 8 a.m. starting groups left the starting line. Twenty-four miles to go… I learned that as the runners came back past where I had set up to take pictures, that they had completed their first couple of miles. I offered words of encouragement as runners passed.

I also joked about the tiny hill up to the White Haven Diner being the only hill on the course…downhill from there…

Race timing would mean that most of the runners were done before noon.

I returned home to pick up Ruth for our trip to New Jersey to sit with family. It was a rainy ride down the PA Turnpike, but not too bad to Princeton.

The ride home, however, was a totally different matter. Homebound we got off the highways and used state roads to angle north from Allentown to Weatherly. On Route 348 just east of Indian Trail Park, we encountered a tree down across the road. We had arrived before the fire department, but the locals had already sprung into ac-

tion and were cutting branches off in the pouring rain. Once the fire company arrived, they added chainsaws and made very quick work of cutting the tree away from the road – free entertainment, then a short ride home.

On Monday as I drove the Turnpike back to White Haven after a doctors’ appointment, I encountered hail and sleet showers. Ahhh, early May weather…

In sports, having Aaron Rodgers at the NY Jets might be a revival for them … Joe Namath all over again. I’m

excited as a Patriots fan for the matchups. I still see the Eagles as THE team this fall.

I enjoyed the hole-in-one at the Australian stop of the LIV Tour – excitement, cheers and beers…

We’re headed for a newspaper conference, so as I finish up this column we have passed from the green of early spring to the green that promises lush summer, as we drove south on Interstate 81. More about this trip next column.

May you continue in good health.

On April 24, Criminal Investigators from PA State Police - Fern Ridge were contacted by the Collin County Sheriff’s Office, State of Texas, in regards to a “swatting calls” investigation. Swatting calls are when a person calls 911 and describes an emergency happening at a location, when it really isn’t happening.

An address in Jackson Township, Monroe County, was established as the location initiating these Swatting calls.

On May 2, criminal investigators from PSP-F, along with investigators from the Collin County Texas Sheriff’s Office, served a search warrant on the address in Jackson Township. During a forensic download of a 17 y/o male juvenile’s computer, a total of 9 Swatting calls were discovered—made to Florida, Oregon, California, Tennessee, and Kentucky, and other U.S. locations. Child pornography was also discovered on the computer. He was taken into custody.

A juvenile petition has been filed against him with charges of False Alarms, False Reports, Possession of Child Pornography, and Possession of Instruments of a Crime. He was placed in the Bucks County Juvenile Detention Center while awaiting court.

Just after 2 p.m. on 5-8, police were called to the Dollar Tree store in Mount Pocono due to a fight in the store. Pocono Mountain Regional Police officers were advised that a 19 y/o woman assaulted employees who caught her shoplifting. She also pepper sprayed them, before fleeing. The suspect was located at her Hummingbird Drive, Pocono Summit home and arrested. The pepper spray was confiscated.

4-27, a ChildLine report shows a father and his 16 y/o son had an argument about

a failed drivers license test, and the son was hit in the face during the argument. The son chose to stop the investigation and not have his father arrested – PSP-F.

Keeping the rubber side down PMRP was called to the ShopRite plaza in Mt. Pocono on 5-9 because an elderly driver sped up in the parking lot and hit another car that was stopped and waiting to park. The elderly driver’s car bounced off the other car and struck racks of potted plants on display outside the store – and one rack of these went through a store window injuring a cashier. The driver and the cashier were sent to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

4-30, 3:50 p.m., the driver of a ’17 Freightliner heading west on Interstate 80 in Tobyhanna Township had a

tire come apart. This caused his truck to veer into the curb and then off the road and into some trees. Despite wearing his lap and shoulder belt, he was seriously hurt. Responding PSP-F Troopers Pawloski and Gaetano performed life saving measures. He was transported to Geisinger Wyoming for trauma care. The road was partially blocked until the truck and trailer were removed. The trailer was loaded with used batteries - it did not spill.

4-27, 7:40 a.m., the driver of a ’21 Chevy Tahoe, a local woman, turned her northbound SUV toward the ramp for the PA Turnpike north but straight into the path of an oncoming ’22 Mercedes Sprinter Van that was southbound on Route 903. No one was hurt. The Tahoe was towed because it was a company vehicle. The Sprinter

On 4-28, PSP-F was called to the ShopRite in Brodheadsville. Store security reported that a couple

had filled a shopping cart then left without paying. When confronted outside by security, the female pushed past the employee, who was talking to the male driver through the open passenger door of their vehicle, causing a slight injury. From the Statehouse Learn how to protect your identity at my upcoming seminar

Identity theft continues to be one of the fastest growing crimes in the country and scammers are constantly coming up with schemes to trick us into giving them our personal information. Unfortunately, older residents are frequent victims of this type of fraud. That’s why I am once again teaming up with the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General to co-host an upcoming seminar on the latest scams. Our seminars

are an easy way to learn how to protect yourself from becoming a victim.

The free event is Thursday, June 15, 5-7 p.m., Ross Township Municipal Building, 250 Anchorage Road, Saylorsburg.

An event was held earlier in the month at Faith Lutheran Church in Pocono Lake.

The seminars are led by Dave Shallcross, director of senior protection with the Office of Attorney General.

Our goal is to make seniors aware of the threat of fraud to the elder community, teach them how to avoid being victimized, and to make sure they know who they should call when they are concerned about their safety and well-being. Reservations are required and can be made by calling one of my district offices at 570-643-7683 (Blakeslee office) or 570-620-4341 (Effort office).

Madden adds satellite hours at Barrett Paradise Friendly Library

Garden of Giving is clean and ready

The Garden of Giving opened with great success on April 15, with the big Spring clean-up of the gardens, and the planting of many onion sets. The vertical planters were filled with soil and planted with three types of lettuce. The Garden wants to thank all the volunteers who joined in to get the season started. Things are on the move.

Mark your calendar for the next big weekend of May 2021, when 2,600 seedlings will be ready for planting. Hours will be 9:30 to 4:30 p.m., with lunch provided. Sunscreen, water and planting supplies will all be ready for the volunteers. Enjoy a nice lunch break in one of the two

new pavillions.

Your help is appreciated, whether you stay for the day, an afternoon, or just an hour or so. Everyone is invited to stop by to see all that’s new this year, from the new raised beds, and vertical planters, to the pavillions.

Starting Tuesday, June 13, the Garden will be open for volunteers from Tuesday through Saturday, 9:30 to 12:30. Sundays are available by appointment for Scouts and other groups.

If being indoors is more comfortable for you, the office is looking for a helper, one day a week for about four hours. Help is needed for filing, organizing and correspondence. More board

members are also needed. If you are able to apply for grants, to request funds to help keep the Garden running, you would be a blessing. No experience is required, just an organized person who can express themselves in writing, to explain how very special the Garden is to our community. Contact the Garden of Giving by phone at 570402-1282 or by email: GardenOfGiving1@gmail.com. Check out the Facebook page for news, or visit the website: www.GardenofGiving. org.

The Garden is located off Route 715 in McMichaels, at 2556 Rising Hill Dr, Saylorsburg.

WILLIAM R. MOLYNEAUX JR.

William “Billy” R. Molyneaux, Jr., 48, of Long Pond, died unexpectedly on Sunday night, May 7, 2023.

Born in East Stroudsburg, he was the son of Evelyn (Wade) Molyneaux and the late William Molyneaux, Sr.. He previously worked for All R’s Inc., Blade Service, Mountain Fuels and several side jobs, and currently owned his own business, Billy’s Home Improvements.

Billy enjoyed camping, hunting, deep sea fishing, bonfires, four wheeling and most of all, spending time with his family. He loved his dog, Star (she was the highlight of his day) and the Washington Redskins (but his family won’t hold that against him).

He will be remembered by his amazing sense of humor, his kindness and willing to help others. He was a loving son, father, brother and fiance. His jokes, smiles, laughter and grins will be missed dearly. We love you to the moon and back.

In addition to his mother,

he is survived by a sister, Jeannetta Molyneaux; a daughter, Hanna Molyneaux; his fiancée, Rebecca Hughes and her three children

Cody Shafer, Vanessa (Finn) Kirkham and Kaitlyn Kirkham; a niece, Samantha Demilio and her wife

Clarification about PMPL story –working with Mt. Pocono

The article in the Late April Journal of the Pocono Plateau about the Mount Pocono Borough Council meeting has a misleading headline, and a bit of garbled information.

Pocono Mountain Public Library director Ann Shincovich tells us she did attend the meeting and make a presentation about the many programs and services the library offers the community. The PMPL is funding the construction of the Free Little Library itself, and developing a Story Walk for the community.

The library is not seeking help from the borough to fund three new employees; Shincovich told council about the library’s plans in order to help serve the public better. Finally, while Shincovich says she probably did say that the library’s budget is tight (“because it is”), she did not come to the meeting seeking help, but rather to help foster a spirit of cooperation and support. The Journal apologizes if any other impression was created.
