March 4 tape continues to haunt Mt. Pocono by Hunter James
Pocono Raceway back at full capacity for NASCAR weekend With the recent Pennsylvania state issued mandates, Pocono Raceway is allowed to operate at 100% capacity for all four NASCAR races. CRC Industries has partnered with Pocono Raceway this year to be the naming sponsor of the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Race during the 2021 NASCAR Doubleheader. On Saturday, June 26 the raceway will host
both the CRC Brakleen 150 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Race at 12 p.m followed by the first NASCAR Cup Series Race of the weekend at 3 p.m. Saturday ticket holders and purchasers will get the chance to watch two back-to-back NASCAR races in one day for one ticket price starting at $45. Kids, ages 12 and under, are free.
CRC is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its flagship brand, Brakleen®, the number one selling brake parts cleaner worldwide. Their celebration aligns with Pocono Raceway’s ’50 Years of the Tricky Triangle’ anniversary. Next month will be a time to celebrate the 50th anniversary of our great partner and the rich five-decade-long history of the track.

Arrowhead resident publishes second children’s book Like most fathers, Steve Dragon told his children bedtime stories. Unlike most fathers, the stories he told were about being a real dragon and the ability to turn into a dragon and fly his family to the Land of Dragons. Thirty years later he turned one of those stories into a real children’s book. Were You Born A Dragon? was released in November 2019. It’s the story of taking 3-day-old Rachel to meet Zargon, the King of Dragons, and get his permission to raise her as a dragon. Along their journey they have to get past Arnod, the Chief Security Dragon, who does not like human children. Older brother Steven stands up to the bully dragon and protects his newborn baby sister. The theme of the book is standing
up to bullies, which Steven did in real life, and brotherly love. When the three leave the Land of Dragons they promise Zargon that they will return every year on Rachel’s birthday, and that’s where Were You Born A Dragon Too? starts. Released in April 2021, the story begins with Steven being excited to return to see his dragon friends as it is Rachel’s birthday. However, when they arrive he is met by Scorch and Singe, who will be his teachers as he starts his

lessons on what it means to be a dragon. Disappointed at first that he has to attend classes, he soon discovers that learning can be fun. That’s the moral of the second book, the value of a good education and that learning can be fun. Dragon is a Senior Instructor for the Montgomery County Fire Academy and tries to make learning fun for his adult students. Rachel has grown up to be a Special Education teacher for the Lancaster County Intermediate Unit
and it was at her prodding that the first book was written. According to Dragon, “In June 2019 she told her students that since her name is Dragon, she could turn into a dragon and fly away.” The students didn’t believe her so she told her father that he had to write the story down for them. “In three days I had the story and some pictures borrowed from the internet, in pamphlet form. She read it to the students and they then believed the story to be true.” “At that point my wife told me I had to get the story published and with the help of a co-workers daughter to do the illustrations, Were You Born A Dragon? was published. Catherine McMahon also did
the illustrations for the second book. Both are available on the publisher’s website, www. bookbaby.com and on Amazon along with the Barnes and Noble webpage. Prior to the pandemic Dragon was able to do a Barnes and Noble book signing and also went back to his elementary school and read to the second graders at Ridge Park Elementary in Plymouth Meeting. Several other scheduled events were cancelled and he hopes that he will be able to hit the circuit again soon. Now retired after a 46-year automotive career, he hopes to be able to spend more time on future books from his home in Arrowhead Lake.

A variety of other flowering plants and bushes are not far behind, with the irises looking good for blooming this weekend — which is early for them. The rhododendron even have some color starting to show — also early. When it hasn’t been raining, I have gotten my spring pruning underway around the yard. I’ve turned up far too many little maple trees in my gardens and in other places they do not belong. I also gave our front yard ‘burning bush’ a heavy trim to gain some more
sunlight for the lilies I planted in front of it. Our forests are taking a good long time to fully green up. As it stands now, the trees might be done leafing out by the first days of June. If that’s the case, we’ll only enjoy them on the branches for five months, then on our yards for a few weeks more. Indoors, we followed the WBS Penguins road games, and even had a night at the Mohegan Sun Arena to watch our locals in person as they won big over the Binghamton Devils in a really good game. It’s too bad the AHL has chosen to end this year without playoffs. On a side note, the Binghamton Devils play their last games ever this weekend as the team is being moved to Utica next season. The big Penguins will be in the NHL playoffs starting soon, so many of our local Penguins will go up to the big club to become a practice

squad. For minor league fans, the local AAA baseball team, the Scranton RailRiders, affiliated with the Yankees, began play this week. Ruth and I plan to attend when the nights are warmer. Also indoors, books we are reading are Romance by Ed McBane. and Reaper Man by Terry Pratchett. Next up is a Lawrence Sanders’ McNally saga. We bought access a Live Stream of a performance of the Who’s Next album by Broadway stars to benefit the State Theatre in Easton, which we enjoyed thoroughly. Last Sunday, we were back to Knoebels with the WVIA members’ outing. The day had nice weather, near 80 degrees. We again took the dogs into the park. They rode with us on the train again, this time they were calmer. We also took the dogs on the carousel to perch on one of the chariots — some-
thing they had not done — for that matter, neither had we as we usually will ride a jumper. Ruth was patient enough to sit with the dogs to allow me a ride on the bumper cars — my favorite ride at Knoebels. We got out for a nice meal on Mother’s Day. It’s good to see people out as the COVID restrictions get lifted. I noted that Little League World Series officials decided that they aren’t inviting the world but will hold a United States only 16-team tournament. (It’s not going to be much of a World Series…) Closer to home, Pocono Raceway will be 100% open
for fan seating at this June’s “Doubleheader Spectacular.” The weekend actually offers two NASCAR races on both days, and there’s a bonus ARCA race that Friday evening for die-hards. I’m excited for the fans, and for our area as this event really does bring the people here. Monday, the 17th, is the final day to file taxes on time this year. I usually file on the last day and include our payments to the taxing bodies. Tuesday the 18th is primary election day. Please take the time to vote. To our readers, best wishes for a healthy May.

Broadhead Creek Heritage Center offers presentation on illustrator and artist Frank Schoonover by his grandson On Saturday, May 22, at 2 p.m. John Schoonover will present a program at the Brodhead Creek Heritage Center in Analomink, on his legendary grandfather, artist and Pocono native, Frank Schoonover. The title of the program is: Frank Schoonover—Illustrator, Artist and Angler. In 1896 a talented young artist named Frank Schoonover (born in Oxford, N.J. in 1877) left his grandparents’ summer home in Bushkill, Pennsylvania, to begin his art education in summer school at Chadd’s Ford Pennsylvania, and later at Drexel Institute in Philadelphia where he would further develop his talents under the instruction of renowned art teacher and painter, Howard Pyle. Thus began a life long journey for young Frank that would enhance and develop his skills, and take him to high adventure in the Canadian
arctic, the American West and South, Alaska, Jamaica and elsewhere. His travels would allow him to become one of America’s most talented and sought after illustrators and painters of his day. In addition, he would publish many accounts of his adventures in some of the most popular magazines of the times such as Scribner’s and Harpers Weekly. Later, after moving to Wilmington, Delaware he would meet other soon to be legendary artists like N.C. Wyeth (father of Andrew Wyeth and grandfather of Jamie Wyeth). He would later become friends with another young artist/ illusrator destined for fame named Norman Rockwell. Schoonover would illustrate over 120 books including Treasure Island, Kidnapped, Hans Brinker and Blackbeard as well as many Jack London and Zane Grey stories . His mentor, Howard Pyle, would encourage his students to travel, learn the cultures, and live the action scenes they would later paint. At age 26 in 1903 he began his most celebrated epic adventure when he traveled by dog sled and snowshoes for over 1,200 miles in the Canadian wilderness at Hudson Bay, 200 miles
north of Quebec City. There he would learn the customs and culture of its indigenous peoples and later paint and write about it with his inimitable, vivid, action oriented yet sensitive, respectful style. He would publish articles on his exploits and capture his adventures on canvas and in beautiful prose in his book: Edge of the Wilderness - A Portrait of the Canadian North. The book was edited by Cortland Schoonover, Frank’s son and John’s father. Later, Frank would use photography during his travels to gather compositional materials in places such as Scranton’s coal mines and silk mills adding social documentarian to his many talents. Research has begun on a book about his photographs titled: Through His Own Lens. Frank Schoonover painted over 2,000 works of art as one of America’s most popular illustrators. Some of his works now sell for tens of thousands of dollars with at least one painting estimated to be worth a six figure sum on PBS television’s popular program, Antique Auction. In 2018 Frank Schoonover’s life and art were commemorated with a special exhibition at the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, Massachu-
setts. Many of his paintings are on display and housed at the University of Delaware Art Museum, the Brandywine Art Museum at Chadds Ford, the Glenbow-Alberta Institute in Calgary, numerous private collections and at Frank’s historic studio in Wilmington , Delaware managed by Frank’s grandson, John Schoonover. An avid trout fisherman, Frank frequently fished many Canadian waters, the Delaware River, Bushkill Creek and other Pocono streams. He owned a bamboo fly rod made by local Stroudsburg craftsman, Lou Schauer, which will be on display with some of Frank’s prints. Frank Schoonover’s adventure filled life in the outdoors and his exquisite paintings represent the finest works of The Golden Age of Illustration in American art history. Join us for this special program at the Brodhead Creek Heritage Center to honor and celebrate one of the Poconos’ most talented native sons. Seating capacity is limited and registration is recommended. Call: 570-424-1514 to register.
Depending on protocols at that time, CDC guidelines will be followed. Early arrivals and those wishing to stay a bit late can enjoy the program’s venue at the new Brodhead Creek Heritage Center building and its wonderful historical displays on famous personages from the past who have trout fished on the Brodhead Creek and stayed at nearby 19th century inns like the Henryville House (guests included Teddy Roosevelt, Grover Cleveland, Benjamin Harrison, Gifford Pinchot and even Annie Oakley among many others). Other displays include historic sites and lodges of the Poconos, local art displays, collections of hand crafted bamboo fly rods and digital maps among other items of interest. Visitors can also enjoy an easy, accessible walk along the legendary Brodhead Creek at the Forevergreen Nature Preserve which is adjacent to the BCHC bldg. Brodhead Creek is famously known as “The Birthplace of Flyfishing in America” and the preserve is open year round to the public (with special regulations) for wild trout fishing.
