Mary Trawick’s legacy lives on with recreation center dedication
by Ruth Isenberg
Full Gospel Holiness
Church of God In Christ of Pocono Summit lost a visionary leader when Evangelist Mary Ann Trawick died on November 25, 2021. Church pastor
Elder Leanon Trawick lost a wife of 63 years, a
companion and partner throughout his ministry. She had a special love for young people, and for seniors. In her honor and memory, and with the help of individuals and organizations both local and far away, the church built and furnished a recreation center on its grounds at 167
Summit Avenue. Here youth and seniors can gather in a clean, safe environment, turning her vision into reality.
The center was dedicated on June 24, and is now in use. It is available for groups to rent for events. Information is available by calling 570-839-8170.

Clymer Library decision more popular than fire tax division in Tobyhanna township
by Ruth Isenberg
Tobyhanna Township Supervisors received a standing ovation from members of the Clymer Library board of trustees and staff at their July 5 meeting, when they voted unanimously to increase the tax millage for the library from .094 mills to .188 mills effective for the 2024 tax year.
Their decision on distribution of the Fire Tax was not as universally popular. Supervisors voted unanimously to split the funds 50/50 between Pocono Summit Volunteer Fire Company and Tobyhanna Township Volunteer Fire Company Station 44. They were challenged by Ed Tutrone, president of Station 41, who said the new station does not meet the requirements of the resolution establishing the fire tax. Solicitor Harry Coleman disagreed, saying the resolution was the result of a non-binding resolution, and left the distribution of funds to the discretion of the supervisors. He also noted Station 41 removed itself from service in August.
The discussion turned to other issues regarding the dispute between Station 41 and the supervisors, with Atty. Coleman suggesting there be no more discussion until a ruling is handed down by Judge Higgins in the case presently before the court. Discussion did not end, however, and various points were argued again during the audience participation segment of the meeting.
The supervisors’ meeting was preceded by a reorganization of the Economic Development Authority, which
included formal approval of an EDA loan of $10,000 from the township, and approval of the 2022 audit.
A request by a citizen to hold a wedding ceremony at the Austin T. Blakeslee Park was not acted on, because the park is open to the public and it is not up to the board to grant permission for its use.
The supervisors do control use of the Blanche T. Price Park and its lodge, and at the suggestion of township manager Bob Bartol, supervisors authorized adding a requirement for $1 million one-day special event insurance for all lodge rentals, as well as a liquor liability rider. The rental agreement will be written to include these requirements, which will apply to all future rentals.
Conditional land development was granted to 109 Realty, LLC for a storage facility behind 940 Court Plaza, providing all comments by township engineer Bob McHale are met.
In addition to the back and forth between Peter Huf, Station 44 president, and Tutrone, the only other pub-
lic comment was a request to look at potential safety problems at the intersection of Route 940 and Route 115 once the warehouse on Route 940 becomes active, and a suggestion to reinstate Community Day.
Tobyhanna Township Supervisors meet again on Monday, July 17 at 6 p.m.
From the Statehouse New online resource for service members leaving active duty
by Rep. Jack Rader (R-Monroe)
The state Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) has launched an online resource to help service members separating or retiring from active duty acclimate to a successful civilian life in Pennsylvania.
The “Welcome Home PA” website, at www.pa.gov/ welcome-back-veterans, includes information about
employment opportunities with the Commonwealth and in the private sector, furthering military careers with the Pennsylvania National Guard, guidance on how to use GI Bill benefits to attend post-secondary schooling or begin an apprenticeship, and more.
DMVA also encourages returning service members to visit the PA Veterans Registry and PA VETConnect, which helps to connect veterans and their families with programs and services available to them
after their service.
Additionally, veterans can access the PA Veterans Guide – an extensive resource offering information on veterans’ benefits, housing, information for veterans with disabilities and more.
I wholeheartedly recommend any veterans with issues relating to their return to civilian life take advantage of these various programs and services available through the DMVA. Learn more at www.dmva.pa.gov

Free music is always Better Together
August is heating up with local talent. The 2023 Pocono Mountain Summer Concert Series showcases the amazing vocal harmony of Better Together on Sunday, August 13 at 7 p.m.
During the mid-70’s through the early 80’s, Jim Imbesi performed in Open Sky Band, known for their original songs and rich lead and harmony vocals. Jim has a degree in Music and Video Business from the Art Institute of Philadelphia where he worked as an engineer and producer. For more than 40-years, Jim has been performing, producing, engineering and recording material throughout the area.
Meg Irizarry was born into music. Her mom was a professional, classically-trained pianist. She grew up playing piano, clarinet and guitar but Meg’s love of music truly lies in her passion for vocal harmonies. As a bass player
and vocalist, Meg performed with her husband, Joe, in Long Time Comin’ The Band (LTC) throughout the Poconos and Catskills, until LTC retired in the summer of 2022.
As Better Together, Meg and Jim share a passion for vocal harmonies and enjoy a variety of musical genres including early rock and roll, blues, R&B, soft rock and a healthy sprinkling of more recent rock, pop, and country. Their mutual admiration for artists such as James Taylor, Paul Simon, and Dan Fogelberg gives this duo the
opportunity to highlight the tight vocal harmonies and the finger picking skills they love with audiences of all ages.
Mark your calendar and come out for an evening filled with all your favorite music featuring our talented neighbors. Faith Lutheran Church in Blakeslee is the proud host of the Pocono Mountain Summer Concert Series, bringing free family-friendly entertainment to our shared community for 20 years.
Sunday evening performances are held rain or shine in the church sanctuary, and are supported through the generosity of sponsors and free will offer-
ings from audiences. Don’t miss the final show of the season with Michael Lewis at 3 p.m. September 17.
Faith Lutheran Church is located at 550 Route 940, Blakeslee, 1 mile east of Blakeslee Corners and 6 miles west of Pocono Pines next to Matirko Hardware. GPS users enter 550 Route 940, Pocono Lake, PA for best directions.

We were worried about just how dry things had been in the woods through the late spring. Our area had some wildfires and there was also the smoke from the big fires out in Canada. Then the weather changed just before summer started, and it started getting rainy. This has been quite the rainy spell…
After enjoying a meal in Bethlehem as part of Downtown Bethlehem Restaurant Week driving there in a rainstorm, we drove back to the Pocono Plateau into the sunset. As light faded, there were fantastic cloud formations rising up from the dense woods that we could see off in the distance. Some of these formations hugged the hillside, making for wispy white blankets reaching up toward the ridge tops.
One of the more interesting was a version of this as we came through the Lehigh River gap near Palmerton. The clouds hugged the base of the mountain, and then rose slightly, it seemed, to let the Turnpike tunnel road in. The glow of the tunnel lights illuminated the bottom of the clouds, and then out towards our direction across the river.
On our ride into the office that Monday we drove through a hailstorm.
Congratulations to Ross Chastain for his NASCAR win at Nashville celebrated with his signature watermelon smash. Also of note, U. of Florida put on an offensive show versus L.S.U. in the men’s college world series 24-3.
We tried to see The Complete Works of William Shakespeare, Abridged,
Revised, Again, performed outdoors at the PA Shakespeare Festival and got rained out. Actually, two of our tries were rained out, but we finally got the show this past Friday it ended just ahead of raindrops. The Complete Works … abridged, again, was a fun romp through his work, done with speed and wit. Next up at PSF is The Tempest, opening on the 13th, and then Sense & Sensibility on the 20th.
The first-ever public fireworks at the Penn Forest Township Park also was lucky with weather that night. We could see there were stray thunderstorms off in the distance.
As far as sightings go, I’m pretty sure I saw a coyote that ran across the road as I drove home. It appears that the changeable weather has some birds out looking to be mating, including a redwing blackbird flapping its wings in a frenzy. Other critter sightings were limited a single turkey and two hunting foxes. Readers, please send in your critter sightings to us at journalnews@gmail. com photos are welcome.
I was enjoying a riverside lunch at the new boat ramp south of White Haven, watching the Lehigh as it rushed by. A couple of weeks ago, water was low and the flow, lazy. Not now. I had my lunch in hand when I sighted a “raft” of Canada geese (about nine in three or four tight rows, side-byside), floating downriver in mild rapids. It looked like a rafting trip. I’d reached for the camera phone but could not get a shot when a second “raft” of geese followed the first. My guess is that they
by Seth Isenberg
were having a little fun. We’ll be taking friends to the Pow-Wow at Drums likely going on Saturday. There’s also some food and fun the St. Patrick’s Church Festival in White Haven. Weather permitting, we plan to attend a night at the Benton Rodeo a bit more than an hour west of here off Interstate 80, then up to the rodeo site we’ve missed attending the last couple of years, and are eager for a good show.
Race weekend starts Friday the 21st ARCA fans, see you there. Tickets are just $10 for the Sunset Hill/ Menard’s race. Checkered flag is at 6.
Then Saturday, the Trucks run at noon and Xfinity race
goes live at 5:30 (fun x two for the price of one ticket. Sunday, the NASCAR race will run in sunshine…
The Pocono Mountain Carnival is the 17th to 22nd - good fun, good food. Get
your grand prize drawing ticket early.
The Pocono Mountains Music Festival’s opening shows are evenings the 20th to the 22nd and an afternoon on the 23rd all inside.
It’s prime time here on the Pocono Plateau. Enjoy the events, critters and weather in good health…
