Matirko Hardware Co.
Half century of service, supplying people with what they need
by Ruth Isenberg
Businesses in the Poconos come and go. Many hopeful entrepreneurs open and flourish for a while, then fade away. A few buck that trend, because they meet the changing needs of a changing population.
Matirko Hardware Company is a perfect example. This family-owned firm has not just survived, but thrived, for a half a century in Pocono Lake. The business grew along with the community.
As they get ready to celebrate their 50th anniversary August 18 and 19, owner Chris Matirko shares a bit of the history of this popular Poconos service business.
Matirko Hardware came into being because Chris and Bob Matirko discovered a need. Both were working near where they lived in New Jersey, Bob as a computer guru for Exxon, Chris for equipment manufacturer Techtronix.
Friends told them about the Poconos, how it was a
great spot for a vacation. They looked around, and found a spot in Locust Lake Village for a weekend getaway.
“It was a perfect Poconos day,” Chris remembers.
“Blue sky, fluffy clouds, beautiful beach.” They were hooked.
They purchased property for a weekend vacation house. It took them almost two years, with the help of family and friends for the DIY project. The weekends were fun and they learned
about the Pocono Mayflies. During the process, they decided one of the things the area really needed was a hardware store, since if they needed something, it was a long way to Eynon on a Saturday or a Sunday.
“We quit our jobs,” Chris says, bought the property and contracted for a shell of a building for a hardware store, even though suppliers warned them that they wouldn’t have enough traffic in the sparsely populated western Poconos. In fact, the
large supply houses wouldn’t even stock them to open. Sales representatives for merchandise brands were interviewed over coffee at their kitchen table.
In August of 1973, Matirko Hardware opened right where it is now, on Route 940 just east of Blakeslee Corners. The first couple of years were very lean. But business grew, as did the Matirko family, with daughter Karen and son Matthew. An addition was built onto the store, then taken down
for another addition. A Radio Shack TRS-80 made Matirko’s one of the first area businesses to computerize its point of sale system. More contractors started businesses in the area, and housing boomed. As demand increased, products and services were added, from paint to plumbing supplies.
“We try to stock what people in our area need,” Chris says, “not necessarily what the supply houses want us to sell.” Matirko’s keeps a

lot of items on hand, and orders special things people are looking for on a regular basis.
Over the years, the business has changed to meet the needs of the population. At one time, a go-kart track provided entertainment. Storage units were added, and for a while a tire store operated out back. Spring plants have
been very popular.Lumber has recently been added.
Matirko’s is still a family business. Karen joined after she completed college, shortly before Bob passed in 1994.
Now Matirko Hardware employs seven people, counting Chris and Karen. It is open seven days a week, and continues to evolve along with the community. “We’re looking forward to continued growth here in the Poconos,” Chris says, “and for Matirko Hardware as well.”
From the Statehouse Financial relief grants available to eligible veterans
By State Rep. Jack Rader (R-Monroe)
The Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) is reminding veterans who may be facing an unexpected financial hardship that help is available.
The DMVA oversees the Veterans Temporary Assistance (VTA) program, which provides eligible Pennsylvania veterans and their beneficiaries with financial relief for life’s basic needs, including food, shelter, fuel and clothing.
Eligible veterans or their beneficiaries can qualify for up to $1,600 in a 12-month period. Eligibility requirements include those who served in the Armed Forces of the United States (discharged under honorable conditions), died in service or killed in action, or suffered a service-connected disability.
More information about the program’s criteria, eligibility and needed documentation, is available at www.dmva.pa.gov. To apply for a VTA grant,
eligible veterans should contact the veterans affairs director in the county in which they reside.
Since the inception of the VTA program, DMVA has awarded more than $6 million to assist over 4,400 servicemembers, veterans and their families with emergency financial needs.

It is strongly urged the prospective purchaser have examinations made of the title to any tracts in which they may be interested. Every reasonable effort has been made to keep these proceedings free from error. However, in every case, the property is offered for sale by the Tax Claim Bureau without any guarantee or warranty whatever, either as to existence, correctness of ownership, size boundaries, locations, structures or lack of structures upon the land liens, title or any other matter or thing whatever. No adjustments will be made after the property is struck down.
The properties offered for sale are hereinafter set out by township of taxing districts and the name first appearing in item is that of the last known owner or reputed owner.

Tobyhanna Township Volunteer Fire Company station 41 members will be abiding by the Court of Common Pleas ruling that directs them to vacate the Emergency Services building, and leave the larger trucks behind. The ruling came on July 19. On August 7, station 41 petitioned the court for a stay. There had been no response from Judge C. Daniel Higgins as of press time. As a result, station 41 president Ed Tutrone said, they were removing all
equipment not purchased with taxpayer money from the trucks, to have the moveout completed by midnight on August 20, the deadline set by the judge. If they do not comply, they could be found in contempt of court. An appeal to Commonwealth Court is being filed, according to Tutrone. He was planning to bring questions before Tobyhanna Township supervisors at their meeting on the 7th. That meeting was cancelled because of a forecast of a possible tornado.

Busy August meeting in Tunkhannock Township
by Lori R. Cooper
There was a full agenda at the August Tunkhannock Township Board of Supervisors meeting.
Announcements included that the budget workshops start October 4 at 9 a.m.
The Long Pond Road bridge near the racetrack will be closed August 18-20.
Fay Fencing was awarded the bid for park fences at a cost of $48,000. Haines and Kibblehouse won the bid for parking lot paving at a cost of $113,543.70.
The Long Pond Fire Company’s donation request for a fee of 25¢ per square foot of new commercial developments will be looked into further by solicitor Harry Coleman. The money
would be used for a new fire truck.
The proposed draft warehouse/distribution ordinance was discussed. Resident Ellen Lott urged the board “to put a limit on where the overlay is. We can’t stop warehouses but we can focus on where they will be.” The board will look at one area for the overlay and then send that decision to the county planning level.
Resolution 2023-332 was passed to renew the lease for the post office for five years.
Indian Mountain Lake Community Association was granted a general permit to replace a water obstruction for fish habitat.
Also approved was Asplundh’s PPL Route 115/
Deppners Road powerline maintenance to allow removal of vegetation.
A proposed subdivision on I-80/115 was approved earlier in the day by the Planning Commission.
A well waiver was approved for 4812 Route 115.
A conditional use hearing will be held October 19 or 25 for PGC Realty LLC located at 4110 Route 115, as a 45 day extension was made until December 10.
The Classic Quality Home road damage on Glacier Road and Russell Court, totaling almost $15,000, is in litigation.
Pocono Mountain EMS will hold its annual round up dinner at Skytop on August 31. A motion passed to purchase a table for $700.
The request for a donation will be discussed further when the budget is done.
In lieu of a proposed Clymer Library annual mileage increase, a donation to the library will be considered when the budget is done.
Clymer Library has adult programming going on including a book club, safe drivers course in October, budget class and chess club. A reminder was made that the community room is open to the public; just call in advance to reserve.
IMLCA reported that the engineers have not yet gotten back to them regarding the members’ gate. Several residents asked the board to take care of the back up on Mountain Road out to 115. The board noted this is an IMLCA issue but they are looking into giving back the land of the cul-de-sac at the entrance gate to the community. It was also noted that IMLCA is looking into new software that would help alleviate backups at the gate.
Pocono Mountain Regional Police Department ahas hired four new officers.
PMRPD was pleased to report only one arrest during the NASCAR race. Tunkhannock Township is still under hours.
Tunkhannock Township Volunteer Fire Department will be holding a pork and sauerkraut dinner at the firehouse on September 9 from 4-6 p.m. They received 139 calls year-todate.
Pocono Mountain Regional EMS reported 25 calls for the month. They are working on building plans for a new building with a training room.
August’s bill list for payment was $158,200.12. The next meeting of the Tunkhannock Township board of supervisors will be September 13 at 7 p.m.

Seth’s Sightings
Heading home one evening last week, a deer jumped onto the road just ahead of us, seemingly right where it would get hit by an oncoming car. Its first step seemed to take it within inches of a side collision with the oncoming car, but the deer surprised all of us by making an enormous leap and literally sailing over the back end of the car. It wasn’t clear that the driver of the car realized how close he came to a crash.
Other sightings this week include a little red fox just at dusk, and a huge Great Blue Heron perched swampside –seen on the way to Knoebels. Reports of large rattlers in Lehigh Township were confirmed with a cell phone photo.
We took an evening for a drive to Knoebels to hear the Mahoney Brothers perform their Beatles and Beyond Show. We ran into some Pocono locals, who said there were other Poconos people there as well. The park was busy, and the show was good, but Knoebels closes at 8 now, so we skipped the dinner we’d planned for at the park.
We went home via Bloomsburg to get some food shopping done and also found cheap gas at the Sheetz ($3.39.9). Dinner was a picnic from items bought at the store, so it was not too late when we got home.
This week, it has been cool enough for yard work, mainly lawn cutting and bush trimming. I’ve a lot of work to do on my rhododendrons and forsythia hedge. I’ll see how my energy holds up and get it done between newspaper work.
We’re seeing a wide variety of corn heights as we drive through areas with cornfields.
Given the odd spring, here we are in August and some corn is tall with beautiful tassels, while corn in other fields is still short, though catching up in a hurry. We’ve been enjoying some local sweet corn bought locally. They say sunflowers will be coming soon. All this, and it is now the season for fresh local peaches, and early apples. We’ll try to get to Heckman’s Orchards this weekend.
This is Carbon County Fair week. We’ll be attending on Saturday afternoon the 12th to see the 4-H critter auction. It’s also the end of Musikfest’s run. Ruth and I hope to attend Saturday night after the fair. The Red Elvises are performing that night, and we hope to catch some other acts if our timing works and no big storm blows through.
The afternoon of the 13th features the Parade of Boats fundraiser for Lake Harmony area fire companies and
by Seth Isenberg
ambulance. The center of Parade of Boats activities is Nick’s Lake House food, raffles and a tricky tray are among the fundraisers.
Pre-season NFL football games are this week, and college ball is coming soon. I’ve been following the BIG 10 football conference expansion, adding Oregon and Washington to make four Pacific Coast teams among the mix of Midwest and Eastern teams that has been the conference. I can say that a Penn State matchup with any of the west coast teams will be fun and a chance to establish new traditions for all the members.
Cal and Stanford may find a new home in the ACC, which will bring those programs close when they compete against Pittsburgh or Syracuse. Just as with the BIG 10, games can start midday, and run late with a West Coast game…fun stuff.
Here’s hoping that gasoline
prices came back down quickly. August weekends are prime for road trips and money not spent on fuel gets to be dinners, souvenirs, overnights and more.
The weather has been keeping us all on our toes now that the heat wave has broken. It’s been amazing how a beautiful day becomes a night of thunderstorms. Last night, I was heading to a meeting in a storm with heavy winds and came up on a tree across most of the road. A little ingenuity, and
cars were able to get past using one lane.
Ruth and I try to keep a clothing change handy in case of being caught out in a drenching rain as we aren’t going to be stuck indoors when there is some fun to be had out and about. So far, I needed a change after the rains during the Benton rodeo.
Stay healthy and active… keep clear of lightning, strong winds and any tornadoes.

Four new officers joining PRPD
by Lori R. Cooper
Currently three of the officers, Cody Peters, Ryan Thomas and Adam Bond, are attending the Allentown Police Academy, expected to graduate in December. Michael Senastianelli, who is 22 years old and from Jessup PA, attended Lackawanna College for Criminal Justice and graduated from the Lackawanna Police Academy will begin with the department in August. Candidates take a written exam administered by the Pennsylvania Chiefs of Police Association, and need
a score of 70% or better in all sections. When the results are received by the department, candidates must then pass a physical administered by the National Chiefs of Police including a 300 meter run, 1.5 mile run, push-ups and sit ups.
Internally the PMRPD conducts two rounds of interviews. After passing a physical and the first round of interviews candidates are whittled down to the top 10. Following the second round of interviews they are ranked 1 through 10, and if selected they must do a polygraph, background investigation, drug and alcohol screening and medical exam.
If candidates have not been through the police academy yet the department will sponsor them at a cost of approximately $6,000. Chief Wagner noted, ”It is looked at as an investment for retention. It has been a challenge over the past few years to recruit officers and I encourage those interested to apply as it is one of the few professions that actually helps people.”
Per Pennsylvania law all candidates must be Act 120 certified with 919 hours of training in various subjects. It takes approximately six months full-time to graduate from the Academy.
After they are sworn in after graduating, officers do two weeks of in-service training. For the next 12 weeks they are with a Field Training Officer, then do general patrol. The department is broken down into 6 zones and officers rotate which zones they work in so they are familiar with all areas.
Cody Peters, 27, from Pocono Lake, has his BS
from Bloomsburg University in Business Administration. He also is a US Army veteran.
Brian Thomas, 24, from Shihola, has an Associates degree from Penn State.
Adam Bond, 22, from Lake Ariel has his Bachelor’s degree in criminology from Penn State. He went to the Eastern Shore Criminal Justice Academy and was a seasonal officer in Ocean City, Maryland.
Chief Wagner explained that the department is in the process of becoming a Premier Agency, one of only 23 such police forces in the state. The department
recently completed the fifth of six accreditations needed. It takes three years for each accreditation, which ensures police agencies are practicing to the highest standards. There are 130 standards for which the department needs to have policies that are “lawful and best practice” and must provide proof of compliance for each standard.
