Exploring close to home: Hauser Nature Center Story & photos by Lori R. Cooper REGIONAL ROUNDUP raised funds for Pocono Mountain Regional Emergency Medical Services, with a barbecue and basket auction at Skytop on August 5. PMREMS is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization governed by a Board of Directors comprised of representatives from six member municipalities: Barrett, Coolbaugh, Paradise, Tobyhanna and Tunkhannock Townships, along with Mount Pocono Borough. PMREMS Paramedic & EMT professionals provide Advanced & Basic Life Support services to these municipalities, as well as mutual aid supporting neighboring municipalities. Headquarters is centrally located in Coolbaugh Township off Route 611. Ambulances are based with three sub-stations at key locations within a service area spanning nearly 250 square miles in the Pocono Mountains. All emergency calls are routed through Monroe County 911. My first visit to the Long Pond Preserve and Hauser Nature Conservancy was on a brisk August morning. The visitor’s center was closed due to COVID. The 12,000 acre conservancy complex is owned by Tunkhannock Township, Monroe County, PA Game Commision, PA Bureau of Forestry, PA State Parks, Wildlands Conservancy and TNC (The Nature Conservancy). Part of the 295 acre Heimbach Tract is accessible from the Hauser Nature Conservancy. There have not been controlled fires at the Conservancy which has led the habitation See EXPLORING, page 2
