My first visit to the Long Pond Preserve and Hauser Nature Conservancy was on a brisk August morning. The visitor’s center was closed due to COVID. The 12,000 acre conservancy complex is owned by Tunkhannock Township, Monroe County, PA Game Commision, PA Bureau of Forestry, PA State Parks, Wildlands Conservancy and TNC (The Nature Conservancy). ballfield. A few steps away is a choice of 2 trails, the ½ mile loop around the Tamarack Meadow or the 1.65 mile woodland and meadow loop.

The meadow loop is a flat, grassy path surrounded by tall flowers and bushes, including huckleberry bushes, blueberry bushes and goldenrod Several spots allowed me to choose to enter the serene wooded path.

Walking along this shady path I saw and heard many birds but not long enough to identify them. This trail is narrow, fairly flat and easy to navigate as it’s clearly marked. This path is full of beech, cherry and red maple trees. I was able to maneuver from the grassy path to the wooded trail and back again.

Farther along are some boulder fields which were left after the last glacier retreated from this area.

Other business included discussion of the potential sale of 514 acres at the corners of Routes 196 and 423, advertised as zoned residential.

Weimer felt this ad provided potentially false information, but added there is not much that can be done as it is not up to the supervisors to tell another entity how to advertise. He continued, “While Coolbaugh Township is always looking for land development, it has to be based upon accurate information.” He referenced an email he received from a township resident stating concerns about truck and trailer traffic throughout the community. Weimer suggested a traffic/speed study be completed in conjunction with PennDOT at a later date.

NOTICE OF PUBLIC DELINQUENT TAX SALE

To the owners of properties described in this notice, and to all persons or taxing authorities having such liens, tax judgements or municipal claims against such properties.

In accordance with the provisions of the Act of 1947, P.L. 1368 and its amendments, known as the Real Estate Tax Sale Law, the following described properties will be offered by the Tax Claim Bureau of Monroe County, Pennsylvania at Public Sale for delinquent taxes at the Sherman Theater, 524 Main Street, Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania on Wednesday, September 15, 2021 @ 9:00 A.M. and continuing thereafter with adjournments and readjournments to such other days and times as may be announced at the sale or subsequently advertised.

The purpose of said sale is to dispose of such properties against which delinquent taxes remain unpaid, the claims having become absolute, and legal period of discharge of claim expiring on July 31, 2021. The Terms of said sale shall be as follows: No sale of any property shall be made unless a bid equal to the Final upset price is made. The approximate upset price is hereinafter set out after the description of each property and includes all taxes, penalties, returning fees, interest and costs as recorded in the Tax Claim Bureau and the approximate cost of this sale pro-rated. The final upset price will be announced at the time of sale.

The purchaser of any property shall, as soon as the property is struck down, pay the entire purchase money to the Bureau. In case said amount is not paid, the sale shall be void and the property again put up for sale.

Any taxing districts having municipal claims against any property herein advertised, shall certify the amount thereof to the Tax Claim Bureau before sale in order to include the same in the final upset price. The sale of any property herein advertised may, at the option of the Tax Claim Bureau, be stayed if the owner thereof, or any lien creditor of the owner, before the date of sale, enters into an agreement with the Tax Claim Bureau to pay the taxes in installments, in the manner provided by the Act of Assembly, and the agreement entered into.

The Real Estate Tax Sale Law provides: There shall be no period of redemption after such sale. Every such sale shall convey title to the property under and subject to the lien of every recorded obligation, claim lien, estate, mortgage, ground rent and Commonwealth tax lien not included in the upset price with which said property may have or shall become charged or for which it may become liable.

It is strongly urged the prospective purchaser have examinations made of the title to any tracts in which they may be interested. Every reasonable effort has been made to keep these proceedings free from error. However, in every case, the property is offered for sale by the Tax Claim Bureau without any guarantee or warranty whatever, either as to existence, correctness of ownership, size boundaries, locations, structures or lack of structures upon the land liens, title or any other matter or thing whatever. No adjustments will be made after the property is struck down.

Bidding and registration shall be subject to Act 33 of 2021 (HB264 of 2021), incorporated herein by reference.

Seth’s Sightings The Pocono Mountains Music Festival in late July was spectacular. It was nice to see Plateau people turn out for the various and superb events.

On the 29th, the PMMF showcased the hugely successful songwriter Jim Vallance and world-class singer Catherine Porter. Songwriter Vallance is the mind behind Bryan Adams’ big hits, along with significant music for other artists including Heart and Aerosmith. Porter has had success in England, on Broadway, and touring for many years. The show was wonderful, and it brought home again the reality that we here on the Pocono Plateau can have this kind of entertainment — as long as we are willing to support it.

The last of this summer’s Pocono Mountains Music Fest shows was a pops concert with an orchestra and Broadway singers, held at the Pocono Mountain School District’s East Campus auditorium. The Festival is looking to present a holiday pops concert later this fall, likely also at Pocono Mountain East.

Last week we attended a fundraiser for the Pocono Mountain Regional EMS held at Skytop — country music, good food and raffles — raising money for a good cause.

We went in search of locally grown peaches on Sunday afternoon west of Lehighton on a deliberate shun-pike of a ride, to enjoy the day. We found a place called Faust’s on Route 309 half-way to nowhere, and from there chose to be detoured by the Lizard Creek Winery road signs. It was too hot of a day for a trip to Bethlehem, and Musikfest, so a winery with air conditioning fit our afternoon just fine. The winery, in Andreas,

southern Carbon County, had a new name on it: Cellar Beast.

Once inside their pleasant and cool tasting building, we met the new owners, who not only make wines, but also make ciders. (We plan to be back to try their new strawberryinfused cider.)

On our wanderings for work, we sighted bald eagles atop the cell tower near Fern Ridge. Both of the pair were on the tower, one on the nest and the other on guard. We experienced a heron overflight on one another of our rides. And, we see a lot of deer, hoping to avoid them when they pop out of the high grass (good so far this year).

My apple trees are beginning edible fruit, although the deer seem to like them as they are right now — green and funky.

I am optimistic about getting the first good ripe ones within a week or so. My wild cherry trees are also producing a lot of fruit, which the birds adore. So, it looks like a fruitful August.

This is a crazy busy time for events. Musikfest wraps up on Sunday. The Carbon County Fair runs through Saturday.

Ruth and I plan to attend the Fair on Saturday to see their 4-H animal auction as we have during these past several years (except last year). After our Fair visit, we plan to continue on to Bethlehem to enjoy a night at Musikfest. The Lake Harmony Parade of Boats fundraiser for local emergency services is this Sunday afternoon. If we can time it, the Mahoney Brothers are

performing at Knoebels through Sunday.

Next weekend is the Great Pocono Raceway Air Show thrilling spectators both Saturday and Sunday afternoons. There’s a great lineup this year, and tickets are very reasonably priced.

Olympics used to have me checking results of contests each Olympic day. I am not sure what dampened my enthusiasm for it this year, but I think the year’s delay plus the lack of fans in the stands spoiled it. I concede that some of the self-absorbed athletes also were a turn-off. Yet, there were moments of great grace and awesome athleticism that I will watch again and again — so yes, I did spend some quality time with the events. I hope there are fans in Paris in 2024.

As for the winter Olympics in China next year, I am curious about Chinese ski areas, and the Chinese ice hockey teams.

Football season is finally upon us with pre-season NFL games. I am counting down the days ahead of the start of college football however, games that I find much more fun.

This week may be the last heat wave of the summer. It came as our car with the best air conditioning was in the shop (sigh). We have it back to be our cool refuge until normal temperatures let us ride with the windows wide open again.

Get ready to Ramble at Skytop Lodge Spend an afternoon exploring the beautiful lands of Skytop Lodge — usually not open to the public — with Brodhead Watershed Association. BWA will hold its annual Ramble there on Sunday, August 29.

Naturalists, wildlife experts and other outdoor enthusiasts will lead the hikes and offer insight. Participants will be able to choose two of these excursions: • Skytop Lake Loop (easy) • Tour of Skytop’s wildflower garden (easy) • Indian Ladder Falls (moderate) • From Skytop’s stable up to the ridge gazebo (strenuous) • Leavitt Falls (strenuous) The event begins at noon, with the first hike at 1 and the second at 2:30 p.m.

After the hikes, we’ll celebrate together at the traditional after-Ramble social hour, 4 to 5 p.m. at Skytop’s Streamside Lodge. Refreshments will be provided.

Registration will be limited (maintaining COVID safety procedures) and pre-paid online only. Deadline to register is Monday, August 23.

Tickets are a $25 donation from members, $30 donation from non-members. Children 12 and younger attend for free.

The ticket cost of the Ramble is considered a donation to BWA, an environmental nonprofit. These donations are not refundable. The event will take place rain or shine, but if unusually severe weather prevents the event, donors will be notified of a new date and location.

What tiny animals can tell us about our watershed On the surface, it’s easy to see why people say you can’t step in the same stream twice — creek water is always moving, always changing, always different.

But there’s more to it than that. An entire ever-changing world, full of life, exists beneath the surface of creeks.

Trout flit and hover and gape. Leaves and debris fall to the surface, swirl, and sink.

Algae and other tiny plants sway in the current. Pebbles, sand, and grit pattern the creek bed.

And then there are the small water-dwellers that make their home here, animals and the larval stage of insects: snails, crayfish, clams and worms, larvae of beetles,

dragonfly and stonefly, mayfly and caddisfly.

Collectively, these critters are called aquatic “macroinvertebrates” — the 50-cent word for creatures that don’t have a backbone and are large enough to see with the naked eye.

Most live attached to submerged rocks, logs, and vegetation. Most are tiny. Yet they play a huge role in the health of every creek, including Mill Creek, which runs through the heart of Mountainhome.

They are the base of the food chain, a main food source for fish, birds, reptiles, frogs and other amphibians.

Just as important, macroinvertebrates shred and break down plant material that

grows in or falls into the water — making it available as another food source to larger creatures.

And they tell us a lot about the health of the creek where they live.

Certain kinds of macroinvertebrates can’t live in polluted waters. So scientists studying creek health spend a lot of time turning over creek rocks in early spring. If they don’t find caddisfly, stonefly or mayfly larva, chances are there’s a problem.

People who fish for trout know and study these tiny creatures and try to “match the hatch” when choosing lures that will best attract a fish.

There’s a reason trout lures are called “flies”!

The parking lot is 1.9 miles on your right from Route 611.

Police Beat Commissioner of the Pennsylvania State Police Colonel Robert Evanchick announced that 91 cadets graduated from the State Police Academy in Hershey on August 6.

“Today we celebrate the dedication and hard work of the men and women obtaining the most important rank, the rank of Trooper,” said Colonel Evanchick. “The first step in their career is complete as they have met the department’s standards of honor, integrity and respect. The duty of providing the finest police services throughout the commonwealth is now bestowed upon them.”

Two juveniles were arrested

by Kidder Township Police after a vehicle pursuit that began at 3:15 a.m. on 8-12 in Kidder, and continued eastbound into Tobyhanna Twp. along Route 940. The chase lasted about an hour, and ended near Route 423 in Pocono Pines.

Redistricting is done every 10 years based on data collected through the U.S. Census.

There are 435 U.S. congressional districts nationwide.

Pennsylvania currently has 18 of those congressional districts, but based on 2020 Census data, we already know Pennsylvania is losing one of them. Our state’s next congressional map will include 17 districts.

Tobyhanna Township 2020 audit shows good financial condition

by Lori R. Cooper The Tobyhanna Township Supervisors’ work session was held on August 2 with additional access via GoToMeeting.

The bill pack of $148,346.80 was discussed and will be voted on at the next regular meeting.

The meeting began with a presentation by Zelenkofske Axelrod regarding the 2020 township audit. The general fund of $5.8 million is an increase of $1 million from 2019.

This is due to increased tax revenue and decreased expenditures. Overall the township came in well under budget.

asked if he could prepare his report once a month. He is preparing a draft MOU for the Fire Department and looking at ordinances to verify they are up to date.

The Zoning Hearing Board was neutral regarding the complaints about noise, hours of operation and debris issues at 339 Sullivan Trail. A zoning hearing appeal was filed which will allow a 90-day stay, during which time the township and homeowners can meet to find a middle ground.

CHESTER TURNER JR. Chester “Corky” L. Turner Jr., 90, of Mount Pocono, died Monday, August 2, 2021 at home. He was the loving husband of the late Bernadine V. Turner, who passed away in 2019. Born in Newark, NJ, he was the son of the late Chester L. Sr. and Helen (Maher) Turner.

He lived in Rockaway, New Jersey for 50 years. He served in the Army National Guard from 1949-1955. Corky was a member of the Whippany Rotary Club for over 65 years, had perfect attendance, and was the 1st honored Paul Harris Fellow recipient along with four to follow. He was also a member of the Parsippany Elks Club #2078 for over 65 years.

During his working career, Corky owned and operated Turner Fence Company in East Hanover, New Jersey until 1981, and in 2004 retired to the Poconos. He loved to dance and sing.

He is survived by his children: Chip Turner III and his wife, Cary of Carnesville, Georgia; Diane Turner-Jankech and her husband, Frank of Jackson, New Jersey; Janice Yencarelli and her husband, Bob of Bradenton, Florida; Ellen Richards and her husband, Tom of Landing, New Jersey; and Sandra Turner and Christopher Wernoch of Wharton, New Jersey; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews, and many good friends. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Sharon Turner Sweeney and son-in-law, Kevin Sweeney.

Lehigh Fishing Company owner creates fishing rods by hand

by Alex Zidock, Jr. You can almost hear the bubbles and splashes of the mighty Lehigh from Scott Belisle’s home-workshop in White Haven. The jump from an Army paratrooper, to a stint as an engineer to a fishing rod builder wasn’t always easy but once he was hooked on building a better fishing rod it’s been smooth sailing.

“I tell people it was two-andone-half years of blood, sweat and tears, and many prototypes to perfect the process that goes into my rods. I didn’t rest until I came up with a good product, he said. “I wanted to show people what it’s like to have a good quality American-made rod in their hands.”

He owns a patent for fishing rod blank design that sets his rods apart from the rest, and his growing customer base is snapping up rods as fast as he can build them. Belisle is one of the very few people in America manufacturing fishing rods from scratch.

“Many people mistake me for a custom rod builder, I’m not. I make the blanks, so I’m considered a manufacturer. I make all these rods by hand right here in this shop,” he said.

Belisle designed all his mandrels, which are lengths of tapered stainless steel and are basically a male mold of a specific rod. “I have a different mandrel for all 23 rod styles I make,” he said. Lehigh Fishing Company rods range from short ice fishing rods to fly rods for freshwater fishing to an 11-foot surfcasting rod. “I apply carbon fiber, a material used in the aerospace industry because it is strong and light, over the mandrel that has been coated with a resin, and that’s
