Quiet meeting at Tobyhanna Township

A quick and quiet Tobyhanna Township Supervisors meeting took place on Monday, August 21. Supervisors announced that executive sessions had been held for legal and personnel issues. They conducted routine business, including ratification of bills and acceptance of reports.

Joe Crandall was appointed to the expiring Zoning Hearing Board seat; he had been serving by appointment and submitted a letter of interest in continuing in the post.

to accept St. Luke’s Road and the Hudock Road cul-de-sac as township roads. A second hearing will be held to consider a general obligation note for the township.

With no public comment, the meeting lasted barely half an hour. The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, September 5, at 6 p.m.

Police Beat Elements Music Festival results in ODs and arrests

It’s that wonderful time of year when sunflowers bloom. These beautiful flowers have a short growing season. This field is part of Brown Hill Farms at 405 Avery Station Road, Tunkhannock (not Tunkhannock Township, but about an hour north) is open through the end of August for the sunflower season. Due to a dry May and June only 30% of sunflowers have bloomed so the flowering displays may continue a few extra weeks this year. There’s still time to stop and enjoy the sunflowers, at sunflower farms like this one, or growing in private gardens around the area.

Supervisors renewed the contract with Penn Strategies for another year at a rate of $4,000 per month. President Jason Fitzgerald told the board they had not raised their rate to the township this year, noting that they were one of the firm’a first clients, and one they enjoyed working with. Supervisors in return praised the firm for the number and variety of grants they have obtained for the township.

Budget worksessions will take place September 26, October 10 and October 24.

The financial audit report for 2022 was accepted, along with the Zelenkofske Axelrod audit of the fire department.

A public hearing will be advertised for an ordinance to vacate the now unused portion of Hudock Road, and

The Elements Music festival was first held at the Pocono International Raceway grounds in Tunkhannock Township in 2022. Township officials had warned residents to expect it to be loud.

During this year’s event

August 11 to 14, the Pocono Mountain Regional Police (PMRPD) responded to several overdoses and later effected Possession With Intent to Deliver Controlled Substances (PWID) arrests arrests of the drug dealers providing illegal narcotics to those who overdosed.

Mt. Pocono session covers many topics

Mount Pocono Borough Council held a work session on August 15. Council president Don Struckle discussed “Pick Up the Poconos” asking “do we want to get involved again this year?” adding “a date should be set soon as well as participants.” Mayor Randy Altemose mentioned a NonDedicated Roads Letter sent to various community members stating, “there was an infrastructure meeting on this, and no part should be funded by the Borough.”

Mount Pocono Rotary president Hal Harris addressed the Board on a request for meeting space for the Rotary, which is open to the public. Harris asked for consideration to

use the Borough building for monthly meetings. Harris added, “Rotary in Mt Pocono was established in 1947 and participates in fundraising” for local needs. “We want to do more for local business within Mt. Pocono.” Council member Claudette Williams is a member.

Council member Debra Fulton was concerned about a meeting conflict since the Parks and Recreation Committee meets during the times proposed by Harris.

Struckle asked whether Rotary carried insurance and Harris replied, “Rotary has (meetings and events) blanket coverage.” Harris closed out his presentation indicating Rotary will be donating $500 to Marshall Aleksich’s Boy Scout Project.

Other items for discussion

Insurance made easy. It's called service.

included spending a portion of a $110K grant for building a small club house. The Borough will put some funds into this project, slated for completion next year.

Borough manager Marissa Duffy asked the Board to consider a Borough Manager Vehicle Request which she indicates “will enhance mobility and her ability to serve.” Several vehicles were discussed to be used for conferences and meetings. One final agenda item included Mt. Pocono Centennial 2027. Struckle stated, “It is not too early to discuss this only four years away. Council members suggested a committee to explore this and Struckle asked Norm Delano to put

something in the newsletter. Committee reports included sewer complaints and increased costs next year. Parks and Recreation

discussed the little Free Library. Altemose gave police report updates on thefts at Shop-Rite and Walmart.

Home-Grown talent for Faith Concert series

The 2023 Pocono Mountain Summer Concert Series continues with Michael Lewis and Stephen Perillo on Sunday, September 17 at 3 p.m.

Retired Pastor Stephen Perillo, a national singer and songwriter of contemporary Christian music, will open the concert. A native of Wilkes-Barre since the 1970s, he has performed at weddings, cafes, parks and festivals, whether solo or joined with other local Christian artists. His guitar and vocal talents span many musical genres and his skills have blessed him with the opportunity to work with well-known musicians and artists.

Mike Lewis is no stranger to the spotlight and may look familiar. For years, he worked as a TV news reporter and anchor in Virginia and Pennsylvania, but never stopped writing the music that lived in his heart. In 2003, his first CD with 6 original songs was used by

the New York Times station he worked for in Scranton to raise funds for the Northeast Pennsylvania Boys and Girls Clubs. After arriving in Nashville, Mike teamed up with Steve Gibson to produce “One Teardrop Falls” and “Save the Day”. These two original CDs achieved regional airplay and were very well received. His latest

collaboration with Mike and Kerry Marx and Martin Young co-producing “Do Whatcha Gotta Do” is an upbeat collection of original compositions. Mike’s music has been used by weekly TV and on-line series in northeast PA, raising the talent of this home-grown musician to new heights. Mike continues to write and record

in Nashville and has opened for various artists including the Oak Ridge Boys. Mark your calendar and join us for a foot-tapping afternoon the whole family will love.

Faith Lutheran Church in Blakeslee is the proud host of the Pocono Mountain Summer Concert Series, bringing free family-friendly entertainment to our shared community for 20 years. Sunday evening performances are held rain or shine in the church sanctuary, and are supported through the generosity of sponsors and free will offerings from audi-

ences.

Faith Lutheran Church is located at 550 Route 940, Blakeslee, 1 mile east of Blakeslee Corners and 6 miles west of Pocono Pines next to Matirko Hardware. GPS users enter 550 Route 940, Pocono Lake, PA for best directions. The venue is air-conditioned and fully accessible to persons with disabilities. Seth’s Sightings

Up the street from the Journal office is a studio that repairs statuary. Some of their work is displayed in the big picture windows of the space that was many years ago a pharmacy. Passing by one evening, I noted the statues, and at the end, what appeared to be a statue of a pug. Until it moved. It was a

nice illusion, one that made me smile. The pug was back in its window spot today. It has taken three years, but finally our Rose of Sharon is in bloom. Our yard is showing a bunch of late summer flowers. Among them is a Crown of Thorns plant that my brother, Matthew, mailed to

us. It has taken nicely to this summer’s weather, and is giving us a show of beautiful pink flowers. Our patio is filled with flowers, and we now sight the neighborhood hummingbirds regularly.

I am hoping to hear from readers about their critter sightings so I can share them in this column.

We had an unusual weekend, and were finally on our own on Sunday. The weather was fine for yard work, and after completing that, we rewarded ourselves with a trip to a favorite place, Benton. There, we re-visited the Central Hotel, the restaurant with 2/3 of a buffalo up against the far wall plus other taxidermy critters around the dining room. The place was busy, and the kitchen, sadly, was backed up, so we didn’t stay,

but will try again when there is a next time.

We decided to drive to Danville to Seidel’s Mardi Gras restaurant and were surprised to find the parking lot empty. We became the only customers for a while but were then joined by another party. We were told they’d been very busy that afternoon.

On our way home from Seidel’s after a fine meal, we drove through Bloomsburg and saw the dates for this year’s Bloomsburg Fair, September 22 to 30. It will be another chance to see the Mahoney Brothers perform, as well as the 70s Flashback Band. More about this in

September.

A shout out to the volunteers and actors who performed the comedy, Sylvia, last week in Nanticoke. The actors and crew included a large contingent of White Haven locals. The play will be performed again this fall in the White Haven area. Tickets will go fast.

So here we are at the end of August and temperatures have been lovely, perfect for late summer. Accuweather predicts temperatures in the 70s through September… nice.

I’ve also been following the tropical storms California,

Texas, the Caribbean. We’ve had enough heavy weather this summer around the Pocono Plateau with our regular thunderstorms.

I am hoping we see good weather for the Weatherly Festival this Friday and Saturday. We have been invited to take a tethered balloon ride there on Friday.

Next week, The JournalHerald, parent to this

publication, will have been published for 43 years as a combination of The Journal of White Haven and The Weatherly Herald, which are each 144 years old. Ruth and I have been in this mix for over 31 years.

Another sighting before I wrap this up there are some good-looking cultivated sunflowers including a fine set rimming the St. Luke’s hospital in Carbon County. Here’s to sunny, warm and healthy days.
