Mt. Pocono asked to support MCHA project by Pat Albano

Bill Leonard from the Monroe County Historical Association discussed plans to expand the Stroud Mansion located at the corner of Main and 9th Streets in Stroudsburg with Mount Pocono Borough council at their October 17 work session. The mansion was built in 1795 by Jacob Stroud as a home for his son Daniel and today includes a museum, a research library and reference materials on state and local history.

Leonard said the historical association seeks to raise 7.25 million in gifts and pledges payable over the next three years in order to build a 7,000 square foot Heritage Center connected to the Stroud Mansion. To date only $6 million has been raised and Leonard is seeking a commitment from Mount Pocono and surrounding townships for additional funds. townships and when the project will be completed adding, “perhaps we can put something in the budget over three years.” More information on the historical association can be found at: admin@monroehistorical. org. Focus then turned to discussion of proposed outdoor Wi-Fi for borough parks, and electric supplier bids, with Struckle stating, “We will vote on this at the next meeting.” Mayor Randy Altemose and Struckle addressed the Police Budget for 2024 stating “there will be a 7.8% and $74,000 increase next year which takes a big chunk of the budget.” Struckle continued, “There’s not much land left to develop and if the police budget keeps going up, we will have to raise taxes.” The mayor suggested a referendum on next year’s ballot asking the public what they think about an alternate source and the possibility of going to State

versus Regional Police. Struckle added, “At the next meeting there will be a vote to pass the police increase.” The mayor gave updates on offenses in September totaling 330 police hours. Several residents complained of higher taxes and police response times on traffic accidents. Mayor Altemose suggested those residents attend police meetings, open to the public several times a month and the residents asked that Police Chief Wagner attend a Borough meeting to address these issues. Council member Debra Fulton discussed an upcoming holiday house decorating contest where residents vote on the best decorated home. Struckle liked this idea adding, “We need more events like this that promote a sense of community.” Fulton added, “Playgrounds have a $30,000 surplus which will be used to purchase additional equipment.”

Seth’s Sightings Sightings this month so far include some foxes, a couple of trophy bucks and lots of does and fawns, and geese beginning to form vees and fly south. We too had a visitor on a southbound journey — stopping by our area on Sunday for an overnight was Nick Chase, whose trip was to take him to Miami to start, and later to Orlando. It was great to see him. On Friday evening and again on Saturday morning, we attended the Weatherly

Area Community Library annual basket raffle and auction. Ruth volunteered. I enjoyed the fun — trying our luck at the over 130 baskets. We won some mums and a gift certificate. Saturday afternoon, we packed up and drove to New York City, into Manhattan via the Holland Tunnel. It has been decades since we’d gone to the City, and entry via the Holland was a rare exercise in patience in dense traffic. We arrived on time. The wedding was held in

a former NYC Fire House. It was lovely, and then there was food, dancing and karaoke. We drove home in a light rain, with traffic thinning by the time we reached the Poconos. It seems to have been raining on and off ever since. Sunday was a Halloween Parade in White Haven. The parade kicked off under overcast skies, and a heavy rain shower blew through about mid-parade. There was some good picture shooting before the unfortunate

rainstorm. It wasn’t a big weekend for winning football among the teams I follow. Penn State won — the shutout was impressive and so too, the score of 63-0. PSU will go up against Ohio State in a battle of unbeatens this Saturday. We’ll attend the Penn State game watch party and soup contest at the Weatherly Museum. Ruth may be entering a soup. Among the other teams I watch, Navy beat Charlotte to even up their record at 3-3. Incarnate Word U. is #5 in the 1AA rankings, now 5-1 with a road win over Texas A&M in Commerce. Both the Eagles and 49ers lost, so not much to cheer about there, especially once the Patriots are added to my list. Booo ooo ooo. Coming up this Saturday is the first Penguins home game in Wilkes-Barre. So far they are 1 and 1 after a two-game visit to Charlotte. There are also home games this coming Wednesday vs. Hershey, and Saturday vs. Hartford. Providence is our opponent on Nov. 1, and Hershey is back Nov. 3.

I think that part of my weekend will be yard work and some raking to get ahead of the big leaf drop that’s to come. Most of our leaves are still on the trees surrounding our yard — though the apple trees have dropped many already. Despite the great color show on the surrounding hills, our maples are still hanging in — mostly green with some color on their edges. Ruth thinks these next two weeks will be prime leaf season. Rakes at the ready, as the display moves from the limbs to the lawns. It’s also nearing prime season for Hallowe’en decorations. There are some excellent decorated properties around the Pocono Plateau. Local sweet corn and tomatoes are winding down. Corn we bought last weekend was excellent. We are due for another apple and cider run to see if this year’s crop of Stayman Winesaps are ready to buy. Good wishes for good health to you all. See SIGHTINGS, page 9

Sightings

Continued from page 8 Bobbie Chase, whom I considered my second mother, died peacefully on October 4 after a brave yearlong battle with vascular dementia. She was a big fan

of The Journal-Herald — a sister to this newspaper. A high school librarian, she was also a huge fan of the Weatherly Area Community Library, traveling to Weatherly from her home in Worcester, MA, to help set the Library books up on the shelves in its first new

home on Carbon Street. In Worcester, she was involved in music, public radio, her synagogue, and the Central Massachusetts Symphony Orchestra as its announcer for 42 years. There was so much more. Her passing leaves a big space to fill.

Looking out from the Plateau to the world this week, there’s another war. The Hamas ground attack was precise, targeting local towns and a farm community near the Gaza border. The sad surprise is that they killed most everyone they came in contact with, sometimes mutilating the corpses. Nearly 200 Israelis were kidnapped. A nightmare in real time, a nightmare in a century when

world peace is within reach. Regular people on both sides are paying dearly…a pile of bodies for Hamas to point to and gloat. And what of the Gazans who scratch by while Hamas uses precious resources to build bombs and rockets? The locals in Gaza City are dodging rockets from both sides. The world needs to be ready to help build a new Gaza…one without Hamas.

If someone has more information, contact Trooper Russell at PSP-F HQ at 570 646-2271, or stop by the barracks off Route 115 in Fern Ridge/Blakeslee (behind Burger King). 10-7, a Harvest Lane, Jackson Twp. family reported they had signed a contract in July and given a contractor a $10,000 advance to build a deck at their home. The man came and dismantled the existing deck in August, and then has not returned. 10-2, PSP-F was called to a Mountain Laurel Drive, Effort, home to diffuse a domestic dispute between

More than $28 Million is owed to residents of Monroe County Pennsylvania Treasurer Stacy Garrity and state Senator Rosemary Brown have announced that more than $28 million of unclaimed property is owed to residents of Monroe County.

“It’s great to be back in Tannersville today with Senator Brown to encourage the hardworking people here to search for unclaimed property,” Treasurer Garrity said during a recent visit. “I’ve

visited Monroe County several times over the past few years, and I want to make sure everyone here knows how to search for and claim what is rightfully theirs — it’s easy to do! With about one in ten Pennsylvanians owed unclaimed property, chances are pretty good you’ll find something for yourself, a loved one, or a friend. We want to get this money back in the right hands.” “Monroe County residents deserve to claim what’s theirs,” Sen. Brown said. “I am proud to work with Treasurer Garrity and encourage Pennsylvanians to begin the claim process either online or by contacting my district office.” The $28,425,415.79 available for residents of Monroe County includes 259,401 properties belonging to indi-

viduals, companies, organizations, and local governments, things like dormant bank accounts, uncashed checks, forgotten stocks, and insurance policies. State law requires businesses to report unclaimed property to Treasury, generally after three years of dormancy. To see if you have money waiting, search Treasury’s unclaimed property database at patreasury.gov/ unclaimed-property. If you have money available, it’s easy to start the claims process online. In fiscal year 2022-23, Treasury returned nearly $274 million in unclaimed property, the most ever in a single year. More than $4.5 billion remains available to be claimed, and the average claim is about $1,600.

Unclaimed property can also include tangible property, such as jewelry or other valuables stored in abandoned safe deposit boxes. It sometimes includes military decorations and memorabilia, usually from safe deposit boxes. Treasurer Garrity has returned 380 military decorations and memorabilia, including six Purple Hearts and three Bronze Stars. Eight of the returns have been associated with Monroe County. About 450 military decorations remain in Treasury’s vault, and anyone wanting to help Treasury find the rightful owners can visit patreasury.gov/unclaimed-property/medals. Contact Treasury’s Bureau of Unclaimed Property at tupmail@patreasury.gov, free of charge.

Beware of ‘Phantom Hacker’ Scam By State Rep. Jack Rader (R-Monroe) Authorities are warning all of us to be on the lookout for a new scam called “The Phantom Hacker,” which involves convincing victims that their financial accounts have been hacked. According to the FBI, perpetrators of the scheme gain the trust of victims in three phases: First, they pose as a tech support representative and convince the victim to download a piece of software. Then they call a second time, pretending to be from

the victim’s bank or another financial institution. Finally, they claim to be an employee of a federal agency. The goal of the scam is to convince people to move their money into an “alias” account, where the scammers can steal it. The scam can include emails, texts, phone calls and even letters sent via the U.S. Postal Service. Please be extremely cautious when receiving unsolicited texts, phone calls or emails which could lead scammers straight to your bank account. Think twice before providing any personal information. If you are at all suspicious, call your financial institution directly using a phone number you know to be affiliated with the institution. Victims are urged to report any fraudulent or suspicious activities to the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center at www.ic3.gov. Suspected fraud can also be reported at www.ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

Additional State Forest roads opening for hunting seasons, other outdoor activities Hunters and outdoors enthusiasts heading into Pennsylvania’s state-owned woodlands this autumn will find additional roads open in 18 of the 20 state forest districts, the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources has announced. “Our Bureau of Forestry is opening more than 508 miles of state forest roads normally open only for administrative use,” said DCNR Secretary Cindy Adams Dunn. “These roads will be available to hunters, hikers, foliage viewers, and others visiting state forestlands this fall. This improved accessibility, coupled with DCNR’s promotion of deer hunting, benefits forest regeneration and the overall ecosystem.” When combined with state forest roads that are normally open most of the year for public travel, more than 3,245 miles of state forest roadways will be open during the statewide archery deer season, which closes Friday, November 17. A list of the administrative

roads that DCNR forest managers plan to open this season is available at dcnr.pa.gov/Recreation/ WhatToDo/Hunting/ RoadsOpenForDeerSeason. Many of these roads will continue to stay open through other hunting seasons, continuing into January 2024. Forest managers may close these roads at any time if weather conditions dictate, to prevent damage or deterioration to road surfaces or forest surroundings. “We encourage safe, responsible use of the additional roads as we share our forests this fall and winter,” Dunn said. “Regardless of whether they seek deer, bear, turkey or small game, hunters in our state forests will find more than 90 percent of that land now is within one-half mile of an open road.” DCNR and the Pennsylvania Game Commission continue to update a new interactive map of state forestlands and game lands across Pennsylvania. The map offers information on the Deer Management Assistance Program (DMAP) and Disease Management Areas, and details on newly opened roads, timber harvesting activity, forestry office contacts, and more.

Some of the state forest administrative roads will only be opened for the second week of the traditional rifle season, because they cannot withstand the expected heavy traffic of the first week of that season. Two- or three-month long openings will be in effect only where there is minimal threat of damage or deterioration to road surfaces or forest surroundings. Following the last day of the regular firearms antlerless deer season on December 9, many state forest roads that are open for year-round travel are opened for joint use by snowmobiles and licensed motor vehicles, including hunters and other recreational users. A high-clearance vehicle with four-wheel drive and tire chains may also be needed at this time, depending on existing road conditions. Because state forest roads are groomed for snowmobiles and not plowed or cindered like most other public roads, they may also be impassable at times, due to snow depth or icy conditions. Visit dcnr.pa.gov for details on camping, maps and roads.
