Spring Is Coming by Ruth Isenberg

It may be hard to believe in the midst of ice and snow storms, but spring is not that far away. Buds are starting on branches. It’s light a little longer every day. In less than a month, Daylight Savings returns, extending our evenings by a whole hour. Though this current weather pattern has brought us more than our share of cold and snow, it brings with it a sense of familiarity. This year is more like the winters I remember as kid—and it will make spring even more special when it arrives.

Lake Harmony Post Office Notes Another month closer to SPRING & Daylight savings begins Sunday March 7Th. Can you tell I’m not a fan of cold weather? by Christine Gilliar

New stamps USPS announces additional releases

USPS has announced, clockwise from left, Castillo de San Marcos, Barns and Brush Rabbit stamp releases.

Three stamp releases will be part of this year’s

price changes, the Postal Service announced Jan. 5. Barns, four 36-cent postcard stamps; Brush Rabbits, a 20-cent additional ounce stamp; and Castillo de San Marcos, a $7.95 Priority Mail stamp, became available beginning Jan. 24, when the price changes took effect. The Barns stamps, announced in November, features digital paintings of four types of iconic barns found in the rural American landscape. Each piece reflects a different season: a round barn surrounded by the hazy light and warm colors of fall, a gambrel-roofed barn in summer, a forebay barn in early spring and a Western barn on a winter’s night. The Brush Rabbit stamp, also part of last November’s announcement, features an image of a small brownish cottontail rabbit of the U.S. West Coast and Baja California, Mexico. The stamp is available in panes of 20 or coils of 100. The new Castillo de San Marcos stamp, which bears the new Priority Mail price, celebrates the See PO NOTES, page 7

nation’s oldest masonry fortification, located in St. Augustine, FL. The stamp features a digital illustration of the fortress based on a contemporary photograph. The Postal Service’s new prices, which regulators approved in December, raise Shipping Services product prices approximately 3.5 percent for Priority Mail service and 1.2 percent for Priority Mail Express service, while Mailing Services product prices rise approximately 1.7 percent.

There will be no national dedication ceremonies for the new stamps, which will be available at Post Offices and usps.com Like everything else, are stock is being delayed also, so please be patient with us. If there is something you would like feel free to call us 570-722-8524 and we will hold the stamps for you when they come in. Since everything is limited unless you need a certain amount that we can order for you, it’s a good idea to give us a call. The Post Office is working hard to get caught up from the holidays but since it’s so easy to order online (including for me) we are not 100 percent caught up yet. If we don’t have the stamps the day or even week they come out please be

Lake News, February 2021 —7  patient, I understand. It’s very frustrating for us also. Fun Fact: Every Post Office everywhere should hand you a receipt after every transaction and the Post Office values your opinion, good or bad. So please take the time to take advantage of voicing your feelings. You do NOT use your name or address. You can file one monthly on one device. So if you use your phone then you have to wait a month to take the survey again. If you have a laptop and phone then you can do two a month, one on each device. Its very easy and only takes a few minutes. So please take the time to take it. Thank You!

I’d like to thank the customer who left the comment shown at the top of the next page, also all the other really nice comments in the past since April and I have taken over. Available on 2/23/2021 UPDATE: For anyone who remembers John Pickle, the Postmaster who hired me in the 1990s sent me a letter recently. John has has been suffering from ALS for five years, and is now in the care of the Emmanuel Center for seniors. He is in good spirits, however the disease has taken his speech and he is now spending his days in a wheelchair. If you would like to send him a “Thinking of You” card and a memory of something that will make him smile or just a friendly Hello, I’m sure it will make his day. John was not only my mentor the first five years of working here in Lake Harmony as a P.M.L.R. (Post Master Relief), John was so caring that when my children had a soccer game, he would insist on covering for me on a Saturday so I could attend their games. Who does that? John and I hit it off not only as co-workers but remained friends all these years. Many good times with many of our customers also. John also pushed me to take the test to become career P.O. to better myself for my children, since I was making less than the cleaning lady back then, with no benefits either. So I thank John for that and much more. John Pickle c/o Emmanuel Center for Seniors 11 School House Rd. Danville PA 17821

On The Road

Another snowfall this week has freshened up the winter wonderland look that we gained from last month’s big snow. The two feet left by the recent Nor’easter really changes the look of our community. Looking through the archives, I see plenty of winters where Lake Harmony enjoyed a blanket of snow such as this. As for being “On The Road,” Ruth and I are celebrating our anniversary this month. In celebration, we drove to historic downtown Bethlehem which is a bit more than an hour’s drive south. We went to take advantage of a promotion that the Historic Downtown Bethlehem organization puts on —  winter restaurant week, which features special fixed price dinners at about a dozen of the best restaurants in town. While several of these meals looked awesome, I booked us a meal at the Hotel Bethlehem, where we had not dined before. It was to be a great meal, in a historic old hotel. Arriving early, we did a little shopping ahead of our dinner. Across the street from the Hotel Bethlehem is the Moravian Book Shop, by Moravian College. The bookstore, America’s oldest —

founded in 1745 — has been at this site since 1781. It also claims to be “the oldest continuously operating bookstore in the world.” We browsed through the store, finding a book to buy and a gift. The Book Shop was also a stop along the chocolate tour that Historic Downtown Bethlehem was hosting for two weekends ahead of Valentine’s See ON THE ROAD, page 14

Day. There were some happy chocolate-stuffed people who came through as we were in the gifts section – they all got a bag of goodies and we’d see groups of them on the sidewalks as they walked to their next stop. After the bookstore, we did a little window shopping. A family walking their three big Leonberger dogs on the sidewalk, and we were stopped to fuss over the dogs. After that, we went in for dinner. We were given a window seat overlooking Main Street. I enjoyed time watching the shoppers and chocolate seekers. Across the street, an actor disguised as a living tree set himself up in front of a store. He would sit very still, then move or make noise to startle kids and adults. He made people laugh, and seemed to be making some good tips. The other thing we watched was the frantic comings and goings of Bethlehem’s roads and parks vehicles, hauling truckloads of snow from intersections around the downtown, trying to

get ahead of the forecast of more snow. From the big blizzard, Bethlehem received around 27″, so needed to clear space for the snows forecast to come. The three-course meal was absolutely wonderful. Service was superb. We are eager to return. As for our next road trip, with the COVID numbers dropping, our options are expanding. Our only other issue, in looking ahead these next few weeks, might be the weather.

The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins hockey season is underway. Games can be heard on local radio station WILK, or watched on AHL TV for a low cost for a day, or a season. We bought a season’s viewing. The locals lost their first two games, then came back with a five goal barrage to win their first of the year. Here’s to many more wins. There is a chance that fans will be allowed into the stands in March, in limited numbers. The Sunday of Super Bowl, I watched the game while Ruth listened, sometimes drifting in to see something exciting. For me, it was about Tom Brady and other ex-Patriots. When Brady passed to Rob Gronkowski, it was a return to old times… with a new team. I’m surprised at the Buccaneers win, and happiest for the old veterans. As for the G.O.A.T. and future Football Hall of Fame quarterback — he’s got cute kids to take to Disneyland. Gronk is likely to be in the Hall as well. Also in sports, UConn’s Lady Huskies toppled #1 South Carolina, and are playing like some of the old Husky teams. I continue to think the team gets better by the game and have hopes of another run for this year’s NCAA championship. They might make it to the championship if their bench production improves. And one last thought, as I have had some free time, I have been reading some mysteries. My latest book is the new Bruno, Chief of Police, novel by Martin Walker, Shooting at Castle Rock, written in 2020. I am also reading something old by Louis L’Amour. Next up is an Inspector Gamache mystery by Louise Penny. Stay warm and well — enjoy the beauty of winter.

Kidder waives mechanical device tax for this year by Seth Isenberg Kidder Township Supervisors met Friday afternoon for a short special meeting, and voted unanimously to waive the mechanical device fee for this year. The fee, normally $50 per vending machine, arcade machine, or the like, raised $4,550 for the township in 2020. Given the effects of COVID-19 including shutdowns and other restrictions on the businesses that host these devices in Kidder, supervisors voted to give those businesses relief from the fee for one year. Only one business had paid their fee so far in 2021, and that money will be returned. The regular Kidder Township supervisors meeting is the Thursday of each month..

Building contractors are expected on site soon after the end of winter weather. The Exeter Property Group has a second warehouse site across Route 940.
